Being obsessed with les mis and kind of almost knowing french is an evil combination. I read a really good scene in the english translation and then immediately go find it in the french book to read it again but understand it significantly worse. I am unable to pronounce their names in a non french accent. I have started to call the characters by strange french pet names.

I've gotta be honest it's getting harder and harder to follow big lore even on qsmp as someone who lives in Europe 🥲
Most event for my timezone are supposed to start at 1am/midnight but often start later due to some problems (or Quackity being late /lh)
Like it's holiday for a lot of student in France so it's "fine" but lot of people also work, in September people will go back to school. Including me ! I'll go back to university for my last year !! And rn I unexpectedly found s job and I have to wake up early.
But even without all that you don't realise how bad french sleep schedule can be ! Most people I know who watch QSMP go to sleep at 4am almost everyday !
I do know some people have different inner sleep schedule, I am one of them I usually fall asleep at 1am but ugh.... It's awefull that I'll probably not see the elections results because it'll be so late and I'll have to wake up the next day ;;;;;

Its so crazy when you play a game in dub(or watch smth ig) and you listen to the other ones(in this case, the intended language) and its like HUHHHH!?!?! My boy does NOT sound like that !!!
#fuck me tho bcs in my attempts to find a clip of him speaking in eng#i looked clips up on yt instead of changing my settings cause duh#and just fucking spoiled myself for a thousand things in the process 😭😭😭😭#me at me: forget forget forget forget FORGET FORGET#anyways i do not understand his eng voice it sounds nothing like how i perceive him like ?????????#french dub ON top#im like gaaahhhh ong hes so hot bark bark. oh wait i wonder how he was actually intended to sound#cause honestly his voice is a big part of his attractiveness to me#but his eng voice is SOOOO bleh to me. but id need to hear more and im not willing to spoil myself#but god. tho kinda ironic cause i think his model and voice are the same dude. sry sir but im not a fan LOL#*btw i mean arno why am i always so vague 😭#the vibe is sooooo different its actually insane to me#i was like im sure his eng voice is great! nah. tho maybe its cause hes stuck in my brain as the french voice#also may i say one of my biggest pet peeves? its fine or whatever to have smth take place in a country with a foreign language but-#-still have the language be english. that's just a realistic expectation for anglo made projects yknow#BUT GOD. WHEN THEY DONT EVEN FUCKING AT LEAST TRY TO HAVE AN ACCENT MIRRORING WHERE THEY ARE#WHY ARE YOU A FRENCHMAN IN FRANCE SPEAKING ENG WITH A TOTALLY BRITISH ENG#WHY ARE YOU AN AUSTRIA IN AUSTRIA SPEAKING ENG WITH A BLATANT AMERICAN ACCENT#etc etc. theres sometimes where i dont absolutely hate it. but it bugs the shit out of me#especially bcs id rather watch smth in the language where it takes place bcs its more immersive. so like. at least try w the accent#catie.rambling.txt

Things happening on qsmp and fans reminds me of that time dream had another brilliant idea of asking for speculative work for his icon and I said that it wasn't normal or okay and I had this discussion with an American person and at some point, they went "well when we want to enter a school we have to pay for the test to enter. are you saying this isn't normal" like a gotcha but like? yeah?? that's not ok?
In France, having to pay to pass a test to enter a school isn't illegal but your teachers will warn you: this is a sign of a scam. the scam being that the school actually sucks and is just trying to get as much money as fast as possible before eventually closing down due to being bad.
And I'm saying that because qsmp fans on twitter are doing their best to defend doing nothing to fix the situation. (The situation being free work by the way. And unsigned contracts. And abusive clauses.) And invoking things such as "oh the union that wants to take this to court are illegal" and things that appear to be normal in USA. And like, ok, listen I don't know a lot about how your country works but please question it!
You may not realize it but your worker's rights suck so much that you think a union fighting for worker's rights to be respected has to be illegal or nefarious??

Alfred Burke puts on his best policing face as Parisian detective Inspector Maron, in Overseas Press Club - Exclusive!: The Billion Franc Mystery (1.6, ABPC, 1957)
#fave spotting#alfred burke#overseas press club exclusive!#the billion franc mystery#1957#classic tv#public eye#abpc#an obscure series‚ even by the standards of pre 1960s telly. OSPC was a coproduction between Ardleigh Films and Associated British Pathé#(they of the famous news reels‚ and themselves a subsidiary of Associated British Picture Corporation). a year or two later and this#would probably have been made in house by ABC themselves‚ but the franchise was only a year old at this point and still finding its feet#the concept is simple but promising: each week‚ a member of the Overseas Press Club of America (a real and still extant organisation) tells#a tale from their careers‚ an unusual instance or shocking event that makes for good tv. these tales are true! says the narrator in the#show's opening moments‚ and these ppl exist! frankly that's something i take with a large grain of salt; whilst some stories certainly have#direct factual origins (there's an episode about a catholic priest going undercover with a gang of street toughs which ends with footage of#the actual figure that inspired the ep) but others are highly questionable (the first‚ about a Norwegian resistance fighter who has plastic#surgery and takes the place of a relatively high ranking nazi officer; i feel like that's something that would be better known‚ yknow??)#this ep is about a nazi plot to destabilise the French franc just prior to ww2; quite believable and certainly the nazis did dabble in#producing counterfeit money‚ tho the examples i found online all relate to pound sterling or latterly the us dollar‚ not the franc)#our journalist of the week is played by Lee Patterson‚ a minor film star in british b movies at this point‚ with swooningly handsome Anton#Diffring (who had fled nazi persecution himself) as the villain. Alfie's part is pretty small‚ he's just the french cop keeping every one#in sight and letting events play out (cue some wonderful Alfie cheshire cat grins). Patterson (and maybe Diffring) got to fly out to actual#real Paris to film some location work and establishing shots (a benefit of making a series about the OSPC was that they arranged flights#for cast and crew). poor Alf didn't get a holiday tho; his scenes are conspicuously studio based‚ even when he's meant to be on the banks#of the Seine...#so yes‚ a fun little series‚ even if (so far) the wide scope of potential stories does seem to favour ww2 stuff. good luck finding a copy#tho; it took me months of trawling to find a reasonably priced 2nd hand copy (Amazon currently have a copy for £79.99 which.. for 2 discs#is kind of insane). a victim of the price gouging which seems to have affected some of the lesser known network titles since their#dissolution. sad times for the fan of painfully obscure old tv.. if I ever learn how to make things be on a computer‚ tho‚ I'll happily#share

What do you think Nick and Sunny's ethnicities are?
I've always somewhat headcanonned Sunny as Japanese-American, and Basil as having at least one European parent, both living in Europe, and an American grandmother. I have no idea where that second headcanon comes from. It's probably me projecting my own French-ness onto my favorite little blorbo -- another explanation is that OMORI seems to be pretty explicitely set in the USA, but Basil's parents are said to travel frequently and Sunny's never seen them in his life... and since it's easier to travel in Europe in my (limited) experience, my brain might've just made the association. Sunny being Japanese-American is a pretty popular headcanon because of his chara-design so I don't feel like I have to explain that one.
Anyway, they both live in France for plot reasons.

one weird and annoying effect of me spending so much time on mainly american social media and watching all these american shows and movies and reading books by american authors and having all these online friends from america etc etc is that like.. when i write i no longer feel like i can set my stories in france? like, bc i write in english it feels like i need to set my stories in an english-speaking country, and the us is the easiest one to set up (i think in a way it kinda feels like the "default setting" of western media?). i feel like if i wrote a book set in france itd be weird or confusing to people, and also im always bugged bc like.. the stuff i write in english cannot be directly translated into french, like it doesnt correspond 1:1 to french sentences, and so if i set a story in france im always bugged bc i think "but that cant be what the characters are actually saying, because theres no equivalent to this in french". so i end up setting a lot of my stuff in the us, except ive only been to the us once and not long enough to get a good impression of what living there is like (not to mention ive only been to nyc), so i also feel like when americans read my stuff theyre gonna immediately go "huh? thats not how things are here. this author is a hack who cant do research." .. so then sometimes i set my stuff in fictional countries or in an ambiguous impossible setting which mixes stuff from various english-speaking countries + france, but then that makes my story immediately less grounded. this is such a big issue that it blocks me from writing entire stories i wanna write bc i just cant even begin to put them somewhere 😔

@unhonestlymirror i need to go to sleep
This was halfly popularize
Let's start off with Angyalistan and Užupis, since I don't have anything to add to what you already know about them x)
+only thing I added is the infinity symbol under Angyalistan's bc I felt like it+had to find a way to nod to the concept of horizon/infinity
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next are Mùnegu (Monaco in Eng, Italian, and everyday life French, Monègue in older French, Mónegue in Occitan) and Andorra (Andorre in French):
Tumblr media
Mùnegu:
while she indeed depends on France for military defense, she's very much capable and doesn't rely on him for everything! (dammit!) - she's quite rich (altho the fact she doesn't have many citizens must help)
seem to have a relationship with the Holy German Empire, Spain Kingdom and Italian kingdoms but it made my head hurt with how much dates there are) - gained independence from Genoa in 1247, independence from Holy German Empire in 1524 and becomes a protectorate of the Spanish Kingdom until 1641 where Mùnegu becomes a protectorate of the French Kingdom, then becomes a protectorate of the Sardinia Kingdom from 1815 to 1860. In 1918, becomes a sort of protectorate of France anew
During WW2 scared to be invaded by Italians, went to ask (then Vichy) France what to do to which France replied 'just let them'. So Mùnegu was occupied by Italians in 1942 and then by German in 1943. Helped to deport Jews
christian, catholic (freedom of religion for the people, but the State is still catholic)
abortion became legal (2019) but it's still a mess so the women are encouraged to go to France, Italy or another country where it's legal and less of a mess
Speaks Monegascan/Monegasque, French, then Italian (and English for business ofc)
tried to draw her more 'classy' and organized (?) I still haven't understood the purpose of the hairstyle she canonically has
Tumblr media
Andorra:
Actually much more closer to Spain (and Portugal), part of the Iberian Peninsula
For an old reason, both French's government representative (nowadays, the President) and the bishop of Urgell in Catalonia in Spain are ruling over Andorra as co-prince (since 1607)
Has been around since at least the X-XI century
got annexed by the French Empire from 1812 to 1814
His territory has remained unchanged since 1278
Speaks Catalan, then Spanish and Portuguese and then French (but less)
He wasn't invited to the Versailles Treaty so he was officially at war with Germany between 1914 and 1958
during both World Wars and their aftermaths was used as a way to cross the French-Spain border by lots of different people for different reasons (deserters, nazis, Jews, Spanish people fleeing Spain...)
Abortions are illegal (so you have to go to France or Spain to have them)
christian catholic
legend says that Charlemagne gave Andorra a charter
(+Andorra is in the middle of nowhere in the Pyrenees)
is to France and Spain what Liechtenstein is to Switzerland - but they care less about him than Switzerland can care about Liechtenstein
Tumblr media
Aigues-Mortes:
It's kinda hard to talk about Aigues-Mortes because the micronation was created in 2011 but the city has been around for several centuries
'Aigues-Mortes' literally means 'Dead Waters' (reference to the fact there are several ponds and swamps in Aigues-Mortes and around the city. The bodies of water stay still)
In 1248, Louis IX named the city 'Bona per Forsa' ('Good despite fate'?) after the inhabitants' request but the name Aquae Mortuae, later Aigues-Mortes will stay
After the Revolution in 1789, the city changed its name to 'Port Pellier' but once again, the name didn't stick around
August 1893: 'Italian slaughter.' (7 deaths, 50 injured, not a single culprit will be sentenced). Biggest slaughter of immigrants in French contemporary history
More about the micronation now!: motto can be translated as 'Love thy neighbor and steal/drink their wine!' - says her religion to be 'Catalcoolisme' ('Catalcoholism'; play of word between 'Catholicism' and 'alcoholism' I suppose); worship rosé (type of wine)
Was created when two friends got drunk (drinking rosé, ofc)
Looks up to Monaco; wants to become like Monaco (hence why she tries to dress up with the same type of clothes Monaco dresses with (classy) and why I made her dyed her brown hair in blonde)
has the French south accent!
Tumblr media
Corsica:
was ruled by Genoa from 1284 to 1755 (fought for independence from 1729 to 1755). Became a Republic until France annexed Corsica in 1769
several historical ties with (what is nowadays) Italy
Got a bad reputation bc of FNLC (National Liberation Front of Corsica) mostly. From 1974 to 2014, the nationalist group bombed (public buildings, banks..), made several armed robberies, as well as aggravated assaults and murders/assassinations against French symbol and government and advocated for independence + presence of organized crime
renowned for her beauty
bonds with Breizh over France+luxury tourism destroying their lands and their languages dying out
otherwise doesn't have any ill intention toward continental French people (if you're respectful with her, she'll be respectful with you)
is known to have a strong sense of community/family
isn't going to scream at every opportunity she gets that Napoleon (Napoleone Buonaparte) was Corsican but she's never going to forget it+little pride
wants more independence from France but numbers show that Corsican people do not wish for full independence
occupied by Italy and Germany during WW2; first French territory to be freed
mainly catholic
Tumblr media
Frioul:
Already talked about him!
he's the one where you have to have a permit to wear flip-flop lol
Drink respect women juice everyday
insolent but never insulting
doesn't like the heat (he is a bit tan because he is in the south of France but tries his best to stay in places where there's no sun) (most than likely carries a mini-ventilator around and stays indoors+carries a sunshade/parasol outside)
Prankster with calm energy
hates unnecessary commotion/noise (also hates the necessary one but understand it)
has the French south accent!
Was Naple's at first (until the XIVth century where he went from Frenchman's control to Frenchman's control; until he eventually became part of France)
Micronation since 2011
Tumblr media
Saugeais:
Created in 1947 as a joke by a prefect and a hotelier (in a abbey?)
at the border with Switzerland
anthem is written in old patois/dialect which France can barely understand
it seems like the dialect has been dying since the last century so I don't know if he can still speak it? Probably has an accent
organizes a sport competition every year (mountain biking, kayaking, running..)
Dracystan and Anthophilia are next! They were both created in 2020 so I made them quite young+They were the only newly micronation that had enough personality for me to work with them - which means France has about 20+ children (but they're 1 or 2 dimensional? kinda ghosts? how would they (not having a defined identity) be portrayed in hetalia/how can they be personified)
Tumblr media
Dracystan:
does a lot of clean-ups and gardening; carries gardening and clean-up tools around
any person loitering will be sanctioned/sentenced to remove stinging nettles with their bare hands. it's the law
loves fairy tails! It is said that Once upon a time, the king of Dracystan turned into a frog
gave him frog pins (+ didn't draw it here but he has a frog hat, you know the ones!)
being honest, i thought about The Little Prince while drawing him so that's why he got a scarf and a fox on his overall-
Tumblr media
Anthophilia:
SYMMETRY. insects love symmetry, Anthophilia loves insects, so she wears symmetrical clothes and keeps her hair symmetrical too + you can't see it since I didn't color but she's wearing nails polish (orange-red-black-red-orange on each hand))
particularity cares about bees, but also butterflies, bumblebees, birds, nectarivore mammals...

okay i Finally feel like i have the time and energy to get back to genshin
it’s a small thing early on in the tcg grand prix thing but i thought it was interesting
so when kaeya greets charlotte, he says “enchantée”
which is initially in line with him being a smooth talking kind of guy
but since charlotte is from fontaine, which is mostly based on france, he’s probably just greeting her in her national language, which is really thoughtful and respectful of him
i just thought that was neat :0
#genshin impact#french interacting with english is difficult to figure out bc so many french words are loaned into english#so like it's hard to pinpoint whether they're actually trying to do a french thing specifically or if it's just coincidence#bc you Can say that as a fully english person and no one would really bat an eye. other than thinking you're kinda stuffy and pompous#there is something to be said that most of the regional language stuff is translated into english in genshin unless its like a title or nam#like no one says greetings in their national language elsewhere - any change in greeting or any idioms are still in english/common#so this is probably just a matter of coincidence that felt in-character for kaeya and charlotte happened to be from anime france#i still think it's cool >:3#cuz im a language nerd and i like that genshin plays with language a lot#edit now that i've gone to liyue...and finished the rest in general dkdhdj#charlotte being called 'mademoiselle' makes sense too since its more respect toward her#but it is also more of a title. though i can't think of another region that does a thing like that#it is weird now that i think about it how inconsistently genshin sprinkles in foreign honorifics#like again. french is part of english. we're used to it#and the few times they use things like 'sama' and 'sensei' in inazuma/japanese its only not weird bc we're all weebs here#liyue i can somewhat understand because we don't know anything about chinese culture and language in eng#but mondstadt is german. which is the other big part of english. you would think there would be more language representation#other than fischl and venti's lyre and a couple other small things there really isn't much#it's just baseline fantasy land mostly in english#its not like people in mondstadt go around calling each other by Herr and Frau. or anyone in inazuma using -san or -chan even#like if those ever do happen. its an edge case. it isn't strict. so i wonder if fontaine is more strict in its etiquette#anyway. rambled for a good bit#point being i think it's weird but not unwarranted that french is being used more compared to other languages in everyday use here

This whole thing about Americanisation is really important I’m glad some people here have explained it so well
DO NOT LET SOCIAL MEDIA TURN YOU INTO AN AMERICAN
#I’m lucky enough to come from cultures that are still quite prominent#I recognise that as a massive privilege#and it saddens me that even despite this I see Americanisation in my surroundings every hour of every day#especially on the internet#America = default#I genuinely hated Americans for a while because of that but obviously now I recognise it’s not my place to do so#it’s the Americanisation that pisses me off#not the Americans#I remember people would relentlessly mock the French after finding out there was rule about having to show a certain amount of French media#in radiostations and such#people would come up to me and ask about and make fun of it#‘the French are so arrogant/self-obsessed’#‘they can’t allow other cultures into their mainstream’#fun fact. the amount of French music that legally has to be played on radio stations in France is 20%#20%#because whenever you tune in to French radio it’s English (American) songs over and over again#the minimum is 20% because if it wasn’t it would be less#AUGH#anyways#most big French artists end up having at least some English in their music#and as I said before this is an example of one of the countries which has had its culture Americanised or suppressed the LEASR#LEAST*#When kids ask why everyone doesn’t speak the same language the answer is always ‘to keep our cultures intact’ or because we’d have to force#it onto people#so I find it terrifying that nowadays everyone from every country is expected to speak English at least enough to hold a conversation with#tourists#<- end rant#lesbianslovenamari
