Also she’s a cis woman who dresses pretty masculinely (because she’s in a mercenary band) so she gets type casted as the mean lesbian friend, when she’s straight in canon

I've seen more than one Yaoi Shipper say that Casca should have died during this one big canon event as opposed to being assaulted by one of the people in the Yaoi Ship, which of course conveniently would remove her from the narrative and as an obstacle to said Yaoi Ship. Aside from that specifically, though, I think it's particularly cruel to imply that being killed is a better outcome than being a victim of SA, and is an example of the contempt fandom on the whole has for female characters who act traumatized - particularly when both male characters in the ship have similar trauma and its never implied they should have died rather than be assaulted.

She's an incredibly interesting character in her own right with really good dynamics and parallels to Griffith and Guts, and the way those three play off of each other is integral to the story, but most of what I've seen completely ignores her in favor of focusing on only Griffith and Guts

Two immediate thoughts here. 1. A good chunk of this episode is the gayest thing I've seen in an anime that's not technically about wlw romance in years. 2. It's so, so funny that the obvious solution to the Aqua/Akane/Kana "love triangle" is polyamory but all 3 of them have way too many issues to make that ever work. (Also mainstream fiction just Doesn't Ever Do That because life is pain. Also they're all in showbiz so that's another obstacle there.)

ANYWAY.

I love that this episode, in a fundamentally similar way to the last one, is less about the play itself and more about the psychology of the characters of Akane and Kana. To an extent, "it's about the psychology of these characters, not their performances themselves" is the whole show and at least most good examples of anime about the arts in general, but it's *really* pronounced here. Almost the entire episode is from Akane's perspective from the point that she shows up, and this is especially obvious with her flashbacks to her childhood meeting with Kana.

In a lesser series, something like this would come off as really contrived. You mean to tell me that Akane was taken with the quality of Kana's acting at such a young age? That she just happened to meet her while doing auditions? That when the real Kana inevitably doesn't live up to Akane's idealized image of her (boy that whole relationship is a WHOLE thing on its own), there just happens to be a honkin huge billboard of Kana outside staring her down?

The unreliable narrator card is obvious, but this is so clearly a depiction of how Akane remembers all of this rather than what actually happened per se. I love it, I love how it leads Akane to delve deeper into the psychological side of acting, and I love her speech about how the Kana she loved was an overpowering, selfish actress.

Let's dive into that little monologue actually, because I think it's really telling not just about Akane but about Oshi no Ko in general. The specific phrasing she uses to convey what she wants out of Kana---or at least how it's translated---is "acting that devours everyone around you."

This is something Oshi no Ko is kind of obsessed with. Charisma, talent, star power, as this almost supernatural force that bends the world around it. This is something it shares in common with like, a very small handful of other anime I've ever seen, most prominently Revue Starlight which I think is more similar to Oshi no Ko than fans of either would ever care to admit, but it's such a perfect conveyance of the feeling of being swept up by someone who is just that talented. That's what Akane wants out of Kana, and she is so frustrated that she's not getting it, and she kind of has a breakdown near the end of the episode because she fears she might be in the wrong for wanting it. She worries that she's just coming off as a showboat.

But the funny thing is, she isn't! Kana's general reticence to really stand out is hurting her! This is a fact that Kana herself doesn't even seem entirely cognizant of despite how obvious it is to everyone else. (Including Aqua, who only joins the proceedings at the very end here. There's a grim irony in how good he is at spotting everyone else's issues but how bad he is at understanding his own.) Akane frames it as Kana having been "squashed down by the adults around her" which is a real thing that happens to kids who excel in ways that aren't necessarily expedient to the adults around them. It has a resonance beyond the world of show business that Oshi no Ko takes place in, and I think that's part of what makes this whole ongoing arc so effective. We will presumably get more into Kana's head next episode (and Aqua's, since he's part of this too and there's still the whole "deliberately triggering himself as acting trick" thing to deal with), i can't wait.

Also! I must say I love how dreamlike the back half of this episode feels. There are huge swathes of it where it's not really clear if what we're seeing is the actual play, something backstage, or some kind of idealized thought-space that combines the two. I hope they keep leaning into that, it's fantastic.

From my experience, I think people are generally not good at detecting homophobia in media, and among fandom types that are really into LGBT+ rep, there is like this pervasive idea that if it's gay in any way, it can't possibly be homophobic and can only be positive gay rep bc rep is rep - moving away from superheroes, that's how you get people thinking obvious gay predator tropes in old literature where homosexuality is meant as a scary mark of deviance is Representation TM and get mad if you criticize it, and I guess with this movie, which I am admittedly hearing about second hand bc I'm not going to watch it, it sounds like people are unaware that this seems just like the dudebro no homo kind of 'humour' that was common in the 2000s, but just spun in a slightly less negative way now, yet still relying on homophobic tropes for the punchlines.

Good point! On one hand its nice that younger people are a bit oblivious to 20th century/early 2000s homophobia but I think people have lost the plot. We don't need to call Deadpool revolutionary gay rep because he simply isn't. Its cool to still like him, there's no need to stop watching his films and reading his comics, but you don't need a moral reason to justify liking it. I think the backlash to the homophobia critiques, that I've seen, have been because so many people feel the need to only consume art that is 'good' and progressive. Deadpool is not that but it still has the right to exist, you can still enjoy it.

On the whole, I think people need to take themselves less seriously and admit that they enjoyed schlock that had some homophobia that they were able to ignore or twist into something else. Save for a few people providing voices and feedback (myself included in both regards), Roadkillerz is his passion project built off a shoestring budget. Yes, the budget reeks all over this pilot, from its inconsistent pacing to the varying quality of its voice acting. But this is a learning experience for him. Even if I stumbled upon Roadkillerz as a complete stranger, I'd be able to pick up how passionate he is in spite of how flawed the final product is.

Now if I were a kid, I'd eat this shit up much like how I ate up South Park and Billy and Mandy. So as far as replicating the look of 2000's cartoons goes, he nailed it.

Ever since Ghosty told me about Roadkillerz over a year ago, I've been by his side fleshing it out further. Hell, he considers two of the OCs I made for it essential to his vision, which still humbles me. I'm eternally thankful knowing he loves what I've created for his creation, and as a result, I've never had more fun creating something. I firmly believe in the success of Roadkillerz. Whether it becomes an indie hit, a worldwide phenomenon, or something that continues to only be known to a select few, I want Roadkillerz to be fulfilling for Ghosty. I want him to look back on this 20 years from now and say, "I'm still proud of how that turned out." He deserves to love something he created. He deserves to see what my other friends and I see in Roadkillerz.

This semester is by far the hardest semester I've completed so far (and this includes doing 7 subjects at a time in Germany last semester). But I'm starting to get my final results back and I crushed it! I'm so proud of myself right now for how well I've managed to hold it together between not sleeping for days at a time and my cat being not well (she is 16years old now and I know I don't have much time left with her).

On top of all that I've started therapy again, my sister came out to our parents and had some mental health stuff that we all needed to work on as a family to support her, my best friend is a state away these days and its not always easy to get her on the phone due to the hours she works as a paramedic.

It's been a lot.

I'm really looking forward to spending the whole next semester on placement (internship). It's a little daunting knowing I need to complete 500 hours (unpaid, yay!) over the next couple of months in an industry I've learnt a lot about, but have no real world experience in to a point. I will be working with people with disabilities, which I have a lot of first hand knowledge on, and I have taken a lot of disability focused courses when they are offered. So in my head I'm trying to convince myself that I will be fine. But, IDK, placement is different than starting a job. Most jobs I've had have lead to the degree I'm completing, but I don't have hands on experience which makes my imposter syndrome flare up. The company I'm placed with only takes students with lived experience with disability which I think is amazing. As a disabled person, I've seen first hand the need for social workers who have more than a textbook understanding of how even the smallest thing affects your whole life.

In other news, I went to a poetry slam last night, and it somehow feels like the gayest thing I've ever done?? (she says after sleeping with women for years). Anyway, it was a really great night and I really enjoyed myself. The local one is on once a month, so I think I'm going to try and make the effort to go when I can. I also joined a queer writing group in my local area which is really cool. They are all so lovely, and it feels good to make more queer friends. Or just friends in general. I tend to be a bit of a loner lately, which really doesn't bother me, but its nice on occasion to spend time out of the house with new and interesting people.

I've also been forcing myself to get out and about more often since semester ended. I've been spending a lot of time at the beach, which is weird for me because I've never thought of myself as a beach person. But in Germany, I really realised how much I missed just being near water. Where I was living in Fulda, there was a lake near my student accommodation that I used to walk to and just spend hours sitting near writing and studying. I guess now that I'm home, the beach has become a calming and safe space for me. I like to go first thing in the morning when I'm awake, watch the sun come up over the waves, then I usually go for a walk for an hour or so.

My goal for next month is to find some other places to visit. As much as I'm enjoying the beach, I want to get back to hiking around my local area more. Get back to nature a little I think.

Anyway, for literally no one but myself, this has been a June life update.

So I have a bone to pick with Cyberpunk 2077

The romanceable characters. Specifically the way they've handled which characters you can romance.

Holy shit, this is going to be a rabbithole.

So the way they've decided to make romanceable characters work in this game is that with different bodytype/voice options you are able to romance different characters, with at most only two options being available at any given time. In theory this means that who you can romance depends on who you are and that changes how they act around you. But I have to qualify this as "in theory" because that is not in fact how this works in game.

Instead they act the exact same at every turn until it comes to the moment where you can attempt to initiate romance, at which point if you don't meet their preferences they will recoil like this is coming out of nowhere. At least that's what happened when I tried to have a romantic relationship with Panam and didn't realize female V can't romance her. There's 4 options total in a playthrough, a gay man named Kerry, a lesbian named Judy, a straight man named River, and a straight woman who is of course Panam.

The other character that female V can't romance is obviously Kerry, and yet he still acted like he was into my character. This leads me to my new theory that all romanceable NPCs with gender-based "Preferences" are bad, even when they are good. I mean, I only have to point to BG3 for a more recent example of a widely popular and successful game that let the players choose with the only limitations being based on behaviour, and not gender.

For starters, it's a lot simpler to let the player decide their relationship with certain characters, especially when it comes to romanceable NPCs. Especially because it means that you don't then have to try and hack together a character's dialogue and actions based on what the player character looks/sounds like.

Larian didn't forget to add gender-based "preferences" to every companion in BG3, they chose not to add unnecessary barriers for romancing the companions. Because ultimately they knew that allowing the player to define their relationship with each character was better than arbitrarily deciding for them based on the gender of the character they chose to play.

Back to Cyberpunk, the only reason I know for sure that Panam is straight and Kerry is gay is because I had to look it up. A good rule of thumb with romanceable characters is that if you have to look up whether or not they are romanceable, because their actions and dialogue in game is sending mixed messages, then you've probably fucked something up.

It would have been far less work for the developers and far more enjoyable for the players to just make all of the characters bi/pan and let the player decide who they want to be with. I mean, at most you'd have to have both VAs for V record more lines to fill the gaps, and that's about it, really. It's not like the sex scenes are explicit enough to require different ones depending on your character.

The problem with trying to give the NPCs gender-based "preferences" in a game like Cyberpunk 2077, is that due to technical limitations, those "preferences" only actually matter in very specific circumstances, so they change very little about how the character actually acts around you, thereby confusing the player by constantly sending mixed signals. It also really doesn't help that in some parts of the game, it feels like certain character interactions, like Panam's, were primarily written around V being a man.

Like if Panam was written to always be straight, then Panam is the gayest straight woman I've ever seen, and genuinely acts like she was originally written to interact exclusively with a male V:

She constantly talks to you about how you're the one good thing in her life, which can be seen as innocent enough on its own, especially as part of her character arc is learning to trust you and other people again.

She acts so differently around you than she does around other people. She seems a lot more willing to be vulnerable with you and only you. And playfully flirts with you a lot.

At one point she uses your lap as a foot rest in a way that does not come off as platonic, and feels flirtatious.

She slept on your shoulder and liked it enough to tell you that you have a really comfortable shoulder.

I should add that you are both sleeping on a couch and she was laying away from you in the position she originally asleep in, that line implies she went out of her way to not only move closer toward you in the night, but also move into a position where she could sleep with her head planted on your shoulder, meaning she was also laying at least partially on top of you. Which is the exact opposite of sending out straight vibes when the player character is a woman.

However, this all happens regardless of how you've made your character. And again, if you're a female V, or have a female voice, and you try to initiate romance with her, she suddenly recoils like your advances are coming completely out of nowhere, and then says that she just doesn't feel that way about you.

Mixed.

Carpe Diem - I love it so much! Catchy, danceable, and the post-chorus guitar solo is so sick. Wish I could do that with my guitar...

Evidenment - Fun, and I love disco-pop! Vocals are on point. Takes a while to get started though.

Cha Cha Cha - KAARIJA SWEEP. Such a banger. Definitely prefer the second part, though.

Promise - Metal is not at all my thing, but this slaps! Love the electronic part. I feel like it loses steam as it goes on though.

My Sister's Crown - I feel like the controversy has distracted from how much this slaps. I love the chorus and the rap part so much. Lots of girl power here, and I'm happy about it!

Queen of Kings - It's a bop, it's got great vocals, and that WHISTLE NOTE! Catchy as hell.

Aija - I love uncommon time so much... It does take forever to find its feet, but that chorus hits so well. Love the outro. I don't like it as much as Eat Your Salad (I love and miss that song so much), but it's good.

Eaea - it's giving culture, it's giving Spain out of its flop era, it's giving genre crossover... Definitely the most powerful voice in the competition, and even though there's only a few songs revealed, I think that'll remain true.

Due Vite - And THIS is why Italy is my stan country. Admittedly it's a little more generic than their last few entries, but I still like it.

Because Of You - Gayest thing I've ever seen (complimentary). I unironically really like it though. 90s house is so cool.

Heart Of Steel - It's not bad, it's just that the last three entries were so good that it seems bad in comparison. The downtempo-style production is great, the lyrics aren't quite so great, I think it'll all come down to the vocals in the end...

Bridges - Actually an ok ballad? Interesting melodies. I think it'll either surprise NQ or end up on the left side, no idea which lol

Breaking My Heart - So obviously TikTok-bait it's obnoxious, but there is a decent song there. I'm distracted by that fucking haircut lmao

Mama SC - Ah, the novelty song. As a song it's really repetitive at the start, but then it finds its feet, and some parts legitimately slap lol.

Dance (our own party) - Trying to be Epic Sax Guy? It kinda has potential, if they fix that goofy staging, that is. Unfortunately it's really repetitive - sax riffs are only good if you use them sparingly.

We Are One - Yeah, definitely very generic. Sounds like something from a commercial.

Stay - I get why people don't like ballads now lol. Defs a step down from Sentimentai

Duje - Not really my thing, and the message seems kinda awkwardly executed. It seems more anti-divorce than pro-family, which... That's iffy.

D.G.T - Nothing is less sexy than someone obviously trying to be sexy with all of their might. The song is ok, but the staging is just awful. That one clip of Alvan winking at the end of the final performance of Fulenn is ten times more sexy than the whole three minutes of this. And the "Make Love Not War" is just annoying.

Songs were something that could get caught in Harley's head easily, but conversations never stayed. They were too fleeting, too quick, and he was too spontaneous for them to ever even make sense, much less be remembered.

When he and Peter started dating, he tried desperately to hoard every word, to keep every cadence in his mind, because one thing he could remember were the lessons he learned and one he could never forget was that everyone left. He didn't want Peter to leave but that wasn't something he could control, so at the very least, he could make the memories stay.
