Summary: The Doctor has some unfinished business on Gallifrey. She has a purpose, and the Time Lords intend for her to fulfil it. (read on ao3)

Prologue

It begins as a low hum, something like background noise, something that might have always been there – so stop worrying about it. But it tugs at her with every pulse, every drawn, minute oscillation drawing its grip tighter. A calling. Come home. Soon it’s an insect against her ear. Shrill, sharp buzzing. Phantom breaths upon her neck, phantom eyes burning holes into her back. Hands reaching across the universe.

 It started when she picked up the phone, housed in the compartment outside the TARDIS. It’s always a gamble, answering that phone. She doesn’t give her number out to just anybody. It could be a threat, a cry for help, an old acquaintance. This time, it was all three.

 She dropped the phone before the receiver reached her ear, swiping her hand back as if it were burned. It swung, black cord dangling, the thrum of noise from the speaker vibrating against blue wood. A pendulum, hypnotising. A captured, closely held moment of shuddering breaths, slowing hearts. She jammed the phone down and cut the call short. Too late. The words were already tattooed behind her eyes; circular spirals folding in upon her vision. She fet time press in against her like a vice.

 The buzz of the mobile resting on her desk seems to shake the entire room. So much for silent. Yasmin leverages herself up onto her elbows and blinks away the bleary dark, reaching a languid arm over to the phone still juddering on the plastic-painted-wood surface. Who could be calling her at this time of night, which – the digital red of her alarm clock tells her – is 1am. She’s not on call duty tonight, which has awoken her on some occasions. Usually someone sleeping rough somewhere they shouldn’t, a group of drunken teenagers, a party running too late and too loud into the night. She doesn’t exactly have any friends apart from Ryan, Graham, and the Doctor. Ryan’s got better friends to call, Graham sleeps more than any person she’s ever met, and the Doctor, well – the Doctor doesn’t call. No, the Doctor materialises in the middle of Yaz’ bedroom and starts raving about an alien marketplace that has the most extensive range of biscuits in the universe. And then makes Yaz late for work.

 Yaz taps the phone screen awake and squints at the familiar too-bright blueish light. She goes to examine the number, only, there is no number. She figures it’s some new UI update – did it even show the number before? No one can be sure of such things at this time of day, one foot still dipped into unconsciousness. She taps the green call icon and unleashes a wall of faint garbled static. Apprehensively, she presses the speaker up to her ear, rolling herself up onto her hips, back cold and bent against the headboard. The static continues, with spikes in the signal like bones pressing up under the skin. They sound like that, too – like bright bruises and the sharp flash of colour in your eye that accompanies pain. It sets her mind racing towards something that she’ll never reach. Her thoughts run on a hamster wheel, speeding up, unravelling. She can’t stop listening. The pulses become voices, warping themselves, ungainly, into some semblance of human form.

 “Hello?” she chokes. It sounds like the start of a horror movie (Hello? Hello, is there anyone there?)

 “Lord President –“ it wavers – an amalgam of voices converging to one, like it’s trying to get the sound right. “Lord President, your presence is required on homeworld.” A flash of static stabs at Yaz’s eardrum.

 “Who is this?” she says, a little louder, clearer.

 “Comply,” it echoes, warped. “Or we will be forced to –“ it stutters out into drilling noise, droning into silence.

 “Hello?” she mumbles. Finally, feebly. (Hello? Hello, is there anyone there?). The screen goes dark against the side of her face, and the sudden lack of light makes her start. Her phone is drained, completely.

 Her first thought is aliens – which, as a self-proclaimed practical sort of person, is an idea that would have made the Yaz of a few months ago balk. She would call the Doctor, except she’d never given them her number. There was never danger here in Sheffield – discounting the killer  tooth fairy and the giant spiders, which may seem like quite a lot to discount to anyone else – the danger was always out there, out in the wide universe where they sought it out. The Doctor dropped by on the weekend (barring a few exceptions), took them out for an adventure or two, and dropped them back into the middle of mundanity. Two lives. They weren’t supposed to intersect.

 Yaz half expects to hear the grating wheeze of the TARDIS materialising in the room, for the Doctor to jump out and grab her by the shoulders, exclaiming with an almost inappropriate amount of glee that there are aliens attacking the telephone network or something. That would be a more exciting outcome. Instead – as her conscious mind begins to shed the sheer terror of those noises, the not-voices, burying what it cannot comprehend – she is beginning to settle with the idea that it was just a prank call.

 Regardless, she sleeps fitfully.

 …

 Ryan hears it in the pub. The night is still young, but he can already feel a premonition of the headache he’ll be swimming in during his shift at the warehouse tomorrow. With any luck, he’ll be able to catch a few winks afterwards before the Doctor drops by. It would be very unwise to climb aboard the TARDIS with an aching head and a lack of sleep.

 His mate Ian is buying the next round. The rest of the crowd are shoved into a booth in the back corner surrounded by tall glasses in various stages of emptiness (or fullness, as his Nan would’ve said, because a little optimism never hurt anyone - he thinks the Doctor would say that too). There’s a small flat-screen TV mounted on the wood-slatted cornice, a rerun of an old footy match. The commentator’s voice and the crowings of the crowd waver dully in the background, an echo of the past. He finds his heartbeat quickening when the players draw closer to either goal, letting out stifled noises of indignation at a nasty tackle, an obvious foul. The game has already happened, of course. He could look up the teams on his phone right now and find out the final score, every detail of the game, in fact. The notion never mattered to him before, but having access to a time machine tends to have an impact on perspective. He could be there in the crowd right now. Then, he would always have been in that crowd, despite the fact that whenever it was actually played he was here in Sheffield doing something entirely different.

He has a habit of doing this, thinking in circles. It isn’t doing him any favours for his NVQ. Travelling with the Doctor feels a bit like living in circles.

 He takes a gulp of beer, feeling the foam slide up his lip. He swallows it quick, and the fizzing stops him wanting to think about temporal anomalies at all. That’s when the TV shuts off. A few half-hearted cries of indignation. It was just a rerun, after all.

 An explosion of pixels bursts across the screen, scattering crackling static – and not the usual kind. It seems to push itself from the screen, to undulate in waves with just a hinted sheen of colour. The once-muted stereo sound is suddenly very loud, and, about ten blocks away, Yasmin Khan answers a call.

 “Lord President–“ the static spews the words in a garbled mess that only seems to knit itself back together after the fact, as if reality is trying to make sense of itself, to reorder things. He definitely isn’t drunk enough for this. He doesn’t think that anyone’s ever been drunk enough for this. “Lord President, your presence is required –“ He looks around at his mates, tearing his eyes away from the cacophonic display with a morbid sort of difficulty. They’re still talking, laughing, drinking.

 “You okay Ryan?”

 “take desperate action.” the static spikes, and the clangour of it sounds like his feet on the rungs of a ladder, and the ringing sound through hollow metal as you slip…

 “Hey, mate, you feelin’ alright?” He can’t tell which face it’s coming from. He can’t even tell them apart. Dollops of clay, murmurs of a strange language lost in the noise.

  “Your weakness is known. It will be exploited.“ He feels his eyes cross and his joints wobble. If he was standing, he would have crumpled to the floor. Instead, he feels a sharp pang as his head hits the table, and cold creep across his neck where his drink has sloshed over.

 He jerks up with a start. Someone is holding his shoulder steady. He looks up, and the TV is blank.

 “Are you gonna pass out of something? You’ve only had a few drinks.” It says. He can’t quite recall the names.

 “Nah, m’alright.” Ryan grumbles, holding a hand against his temple. “Just had a long day or something.”

 “We were gonna go down the park, it’ll do you some good mate. Fresh air, you know.” Another one speaking now. 

 “Yeah.” Anything to get him out of this pub, away from… something alien, probably. Only no one else had seen it, and that was never a good sign, especially when he had a few drinks in him already. Maybe he had just had a long day. Excuses are easy to spin, and the colours are already slipping from his mind. Washed away. Only a stain left behind.

 Next up, drunken loitering. Yaz would be furious.

 …

 Graham doesn’t hear anything at all. He’s a heavy sleeper, and he likes to savour every second of it thank you very much.

 “If I’m gonna be larkin’ about on some alien world,” he’d defended, when Ryan had chuckled at his perfectly respectable bed time of 8pm, “I’m gonna need ten hours at least. It’s all very well for you to run off four hours and a couple cans of those energy drinks – which, by the way, your Nan’d have a fit if she seen you drinkin’ – but I need my shut-eye.” And it’s better than sittin’ like we used to, he’d thought. In front of the telly or reading in those big armchairs that seemed to envelop your whole body. Because he’d look up with a grin on his face and a lark on his lips, and she wouldn’t be there. At least in the dark he could almost pretend. Sometimes he could almost feel her breath on his back.

 When Graham O’Brien gets a call at thirteen o’clock, he doesn’t answer. It rings out in the kitchen while he sleeps on. But he dreams of a woman wrapped in knitted shawls and a warm, wide smile. And she’s telling him that the president is coming home.

Liam sits in a chair, with rope tied all around him and the back of the seat. 3 ropes are tied to the back of his seat, actually, and they’re attached to the fence separating the backyard from the porch. In front of Liam, is a little, 30’ by 30’ container, holding about 3 inches of some kind corrosive looking liquid.

The kicker, is that Liam’s chair is sitting on an angle, with just the two front legs on the ground, so if the ropes tied to the fence in front of him are cut, or loosen… he goes face first into the acidic liquid.

“O-oh my god,” I breath, turning the porch light off on accident once I’ve seen it and then fumbling to turn it back on. “Liam!” I force a shaky hand up to my mouth, wanting more then anything to just turn the light back off and forget I saw it, and hating myself for it. Being strong, I just look away and back into my house, ignoring the sounds Liam makes as he frantically tries to escape the ropes and the chair, plastic chair legs scraping on the porch and causing anxiety to race up 16 thousand levels in my chest. I put the phone back to my ear, feeling the way my fingers shake around it on my face, making me quite aware of how scared I must appear. “… what are you going to do to him?”

“I think you know.”

That teasing lilt pisses me off, so I snap. “Who are you?”

“Now, let’s not be rude, bitch. I might get mad, and not give you a chance to save your boyfriend.” I can, I can hear my heart beating. In my ears. Like running water when you’re under the surface in a pool. Its so loud, and so fast, and it nearly drowns out everything else. “If you manage to not to piss me off, we can play a game. Winner takes all.”

“You, you mean… “Slowly, shakily, I lower myself onto a chair, but don’t manage to get comfortable. I just sat down because I’m so scared my legs felt like they were about to give out, but now I’m stuck in one position with fear. “Our lives… “

“Very clever. Now, the rules of the game. I’m going to ask you some simple questions- Horror movie related, since you said you liked them so much… And if you get them right, I wont gut Liam. If you get them wrong, I get kill you both. Sound fair?”

“Ah… sure… “What else can I say?? ‘Ah no, scary telephone murderer, that’s not cool with me. Can we do this another time?? I’m a bit TRAUMATISED.’.

“Awesome! Here’s your first question- if you get this wrong, I’ll cut one of the ropes keeping his chair from tilting right into the nasty looking liquid there. Okay! Easy goes it, right? Here’s it is; Which horror movie, subgenre Slasher, is set in a town called Haddonfield?”

Glancing back at the porch, I watch Liam freeze in his panicked movements and go absolutely stiff, which I understand means this crazy ass has snapped at him to stop moving. I can understand, why he froze. Every word coming from this person’s mouth sounds painful.

“Th-thanks.” I force it out, and I don’t even no why. I don’t need to pretend to love him here, but its ingrained in me. Not to let anyone know I hate him.

“Sure, doll! Now, second question! Remember, if you get this one wrong a rope gets cut! Captain Elliot Spencer became… ?”

“Pinhead.”

Why did I say that?!

“Maybe I should keep you around for longer, you know you’re stuff! Of course, then I wouldn’t get to kill you… which would be such a downer. Nevermind! Just, good job!”

“Okay now, flash round! Meaning, I get to add a fun new consequence to this last question! Don’t worry, I’ll stay fair. When he’s done, the rough, painful sound in my ears dying down to a sigh, he asks the question. He asks a question, and I make a decision. “Which Final Girl actress plays herself, in one of her Slasher flicks?”

I know that one. I love the Nightmare movies, I own them all. I know this answer.

But still, “Uhh… ah… “As if I’m still deciding whether to kill my boyfriend, I stutter a mess of scared, ‘I don’t know sounds’, before biting into my lip so hard it hurts, and immediately letting go. I take the plunge. “Um, Sally Hardesty?”

The voice pauses for a effect, then suddenly, before I’m ready the ropes get cut and Liam’s face goes smashing into the sizzling the liquid, making me scream. “Wrong!! Haha, now wait for me right there- “

Quickly, as if I’m taking it back or forgot the real answer instead of just lied to kill a guy, I say the right answer. “Heather Langenkamp, as Nancy Thompson in the Nightmare on Elm Street Series. Sp… Specifically, New Nightmare. Was it? Am I right?”

The silence on the other end of the phone nearly doesn’t occur to me, as I watch in equal parts horror and… a macabre version of relief, Liam’s shirt get eaten away by the substance- because I cant make myself look at his face. Finally, the murderer speaks up again. “… What?”

“I-in New Nightmare, the killer becomes real and goes after the actors-“

“I know that!” He snaps, making me close my mouth a shut up. I’m still shaking, but not because I’m scared anymore. Because I just killed someone. “You knew that the whole time- “

“No-No! I didn’t! I just remembered- “

“Don’t lie to me, bitch!” My heart beat skips, I swear, from fear at his furious words. “… Why… did you say Sally Hardesty?”

I stay silent this time, not sure what I could say. Would the truth make him madder? Or will it give him some kind of insane, murderous satisfaction?

“You into some sick BDSM shit? You get off on this? Because I think you went a little far-“

“No! I-I… “I cross my arms tightly across my chest, still fully aware that this psycho intends to put a knife in my neck, thinking of the bruises leading up my spine right now. Bruises that will never get touched again. They’ll quickly heal, and disappear, and I’ll be normal again.

He won’t be able to hurt me anymore.

“Who we killed, he… “I whisper into the phone. “You did a public service.”

Summer Job Duwang HCs

No one asked for my opinions, but like you’re getting them. B/C I love you <3.

So the gang’s summer starts off with them penniless as always. Josuke and his great money making schemes keep falling flat which leads you to think of a much simpler, honest plan. Dog sitting!

With so many dogs around the neighborhood, it’s easier to find more willing business than to scam Rohan of his money. Mikitaka is also very glad that he doesn’t have to be subjected to the constant nausea of being a pair of dice.

You gather the gang up at your house to make some posters to advertise. Various drawings of cartoon dogs are stapled on telephone poles with basic information. There were many questions concerning Mikitaka’s understanding of what dogs looked like.

Soon, all of you have calls coming in to schedule their respective times. As the most responsible of the bunch, Koichi takes care of the whole ordeal, Yukako lending a hand as well.

The jobs are separated amoung you all but constantly swapped to not bore you. One week, you would be with Okuyasu walking the dogs, the next you’d share house sitting with Yukako. 

The summer break would be filled with fur followed by hard earned cash. Each sitter received an equal amount of pay for their work.

Some funny-haha moments would include:

A Dalmatian destroying its owner’s closet of clothes on your stand alone shift of house sitting. You had to call up Josuke to fix the clothing for you with Crazy Diamond. You couldn’t help but be sheepish the whole time he was there. It wasn’t your fault the owner had a huge television that made playing video games even more enjoyable. You paid him back by letting him play on the console whilst you watched the dog.

More than enough moments of the gang walking dogs together and chasing each other with the bags of dog poop. Too many casualties involved tripping over dogs and stepping right in it. A not so fun game that always ends terribly that Okuyasu likes to play is for someone to toss the bag of poop his way and him to try to swipe it out of midair.

No one knows how, but Josuke and Okuyasu started out walking 6 (six) dogs and came back with 7 (seven). Somehow the dog even came with a leash???

Where there’s dog, there must be dog hair. You can always expect Josuke to be picking at his hair when the dogs are resting, constantly keeping tabs on how much fur there is in his perfect pomp.

Many, many group songs were started by singing along with the radio and ended up with the dogs howling along. No matter how you much you tried to keep the singing at a minimum, the dogs would always loudly follow your lead.

Singing attracts dancing, so it’s not uncommon for the dogs to prance around with the gang when dancing with the radio.

Sometimes when it became too hot to be able to walk the dogs, you would meet up at someone’s house with a sprinkler and the dogs. Swimsuits would be required no matter how many dogs were present, everyone would end up soaked. Zoomies were followed with shakes, making the gang’s attempts at drying off useless and futile ;). After all the dogs and humans, and maybe one alien, were dried off, you would go inside to the A.C. and have a literal dog pile in front of the television, too exhausted to move an inch. It’s not until someone knocks on the door for the dogs to go wild and startle you from the group nap time.

More than often, the dog piles happen at Josuke’s house. You all end up sitting around the television and falling asleep with a fan blowing cool air through the living room. Too often, Ms. Higashikata would creep into the room and fawn over how adorable you all looked before taking a picture with a disposable camera. So much so, she ended up with a few cameras by the end of the break.

When making your way through a walk with the dogs, you would pass by Rohan’s house occasionally. Every time you stopped by and asked for some water for the panting crew behind you, he’d cave and bring out some bowls next to the hose. Whether he actually cared for the dogs or just for Koichi’s opinion of how he treated his friend, you would never know. Except for the fact he’d always sneak some pets on the dogs when he thought you weren’t looking.

One day whilst trying to make some homemade dog treats for the pups, you were scared by a stampede of dog and the oatmeal canister spilled onto the floor and the dogs. Rounding up the dogs proved much easier than you expected, with the treats already made. You had called over Josuke and Okuyasu since they were the only ones left that day walking the dogs. A treat or two wouldn’t hurt. With the dogs outside, you were able to clean up the oat mess and change into your swimwear to clean the dogs up. Grabbing a bucket and some dog shampoo, you took to the front yard where your hose was.

The two hooligans would come from different ways, each with their own pack of dogs. With you busying yourself with the arduous task of getting each pup clean, Josuke and Okuyasu would find themselves blushing at how cute you looked. As if it were a slow-motion movie scene, you seemed to be glowing, radiating with pure happiness in the afternoon heat. The water from the dogs was shaken onto your skin, causing you to sparkle in the sun. The two were so encapsulated by you that they collided into each other on the street, not noticing how they were both taking in your beauty at the same time. The sudden “oofs” and shouts for the dogs to get off made you turn to face them.

You couldn’t help but laugh at how the scene played out. After getting over your laughing spell, you came to their aid by untangling the leashes and pulling them up. Just the sight of you standing over them and reaching out for their hands reassured them that you were a real angel of some sort. Their evident blushes made you assume they were just really sweaty and needed to cool off. Cue the hose being turned on and aimed at them. Thank goodness for shorts and tank tops, but at the same time, curses on them for only giving you a peek at their defined muscles under them.

The village idiot peeps in round the post of the open door, grows bold seeing the old man so absorbed, and cautiously tiptoes into the room. The idiot boy advances in shambling stealth a little nearer the table where something is spluttering over a burner; cunningly keeps his eye on the reader; jerks himself nearer still. He is attracted by the bubbling mess in the tube; then fascinated by it; his hand stretches slyly towards it, draws back, fumbles to it again; he twitches in violent excitement, grimacing at it; clutches it.

The whole bag of tricks flashes up at his touch in an explosion of glittering dust. There’s a split second’s glimpse of the vast sad blackness of infinity before the perfectly bare void is spattered by this glittering exsurgence, this bursting fountain of molecules, instantly crystallizing to sequins of differing size. And now at once begins the fiery development of comets, suns, planets, nebulae; constellations are clotted together; worlds rush forth on their immense navigations; the monstrous efflorescence of the universe burgeons in the flick of an eyelash. Creation is under way. The solar system is off. Larger and more brilliant blaze the globes, the stars roar past like stratoliners to destinations not checked in quadrillions. The billiard-ball earth swings up and flattens colossally underfoot. The thunderous revving of the cosmic machines settles to the steady beat of eternity.

Right in the middle of all this, in a quiet place, the little girl B sits reading a book. She is sitting on short fresh green grass, leaning against a tree, where it is quiet and cool. Everything here is springlike and very much simplified; just the grass and the innocent green tree and the child. Before long several other children appear and begin to play with red and green bean bags. They stand in two rows and each child throws the bag over his shoulder to be caught and passed on by the child behind. Their conduct is orderly, ritualistic, almost obsessional. They are completely concentrated on their serious attention to the rules of the game, their occasional subdued exclamations barely disturb the hush. Under the tree, B puts down her book and looks on. It’s clear that she would like to join in, but she feels shy and needs some encouragement. The others pay no attention to her, they are quite absorbed in their game. At last B gets up and goes towards them. Play stops for a moment. A boy with a polite blank public-school face steps out and gravely invites her into the game.

Perhaps B is nervous, perhaps she doesn’t understand the rules, perhaps she just means to introduce an innovation. Anyway, when it comes to her turn, she throws the red bean bag forward instead of back. The game breaks up at once, as if by telepathic agreement. The faces of the other children grow astonished and hostile. The polite boy in particular wears an outraged expression as he marshalls his companions away.

Left alone, B stands bewildered, looking in the direction where the players have vanished. After a moment, quickly and hopefully, her eyes are drawn to a man (it’s her father, as a matter of fact) who walks along fast, dressed in dark town clothes and carrying a dispatch case and an umbrella. Her face turns upwards in expectation. But he is in too much of a hurry to notice her, he has important things on his mind, he passes on and scurries into an enormous office building which at this moment snaps up like an opera hat out of the ground to the right of the tree. As soon as he’s in, the ornate double doors close behind him; but still, through the wrought-iron scrolls, he can be seen diminishing down room after room full of clerks, typists, desks, room full of clerks, typists, desks, telephones, green-shaded lamps; door after transparent door shutting behind his back, till he is at last inaccessibly entombed as if in the heart of a gigantic formicary.

B, who has taken a few steps towards the building as if she meant to follow him, drifts back to the tree, on the other side of which a plain stone wall with a door in the centre has now erected itself. From some distance off, A approaches aloofly, her hand already outstretched to the door. On this narrow door, with her left hand, with a blue-flashing ring, she raps in a deliberate fashion. While she is waiting for the door to open she turns her eyes slowly upon the child, at whom she looks directly and pensively. Then her eyes move, sliding without eagerness to the door which, opening, displays a dark space where it is just possible to distinguish the sculptured pallor of urns in the deep shadow. A goes inside. With two final, distinct clicks, the door is shut and locked. The little girl watches with the acceptance of perfectly uncomprehending fatalism, then sits down in her original place at the foot of the tree. As she picks up her book and starts reading, the wall and the office building dissolve unobtrusively, restoring the dream picture as it was to begin with. The only difference being that its vernal simplicity now holds a definite suggestion of loneliness, isolation.

Everything Wrong with Resident Evil 7

SPOILER WARNING: IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED RESIDENT EVIL 7 TO COMPLETION, DO NOT READ THIS ARTICLE

When you really look at it, it is kind of surprising that Resident Evil 7 built up as much hype as it. did. Probably the only thing that generated the hype was the rather fantastic demo that basically took inspiration from the even better PT. The hype is also kind of understandable when you take into account that Resident Evil 7 is meant to reboot the franchise. Given the absolutely campy garbage fest that was Resident Evil 6, I can see why a reboot was necessary. However, the game STILL suffers from some really poor writing. The game opens incredibly strong but after awhile it falls flat. And there are some glaring issues in the game’s story that I want to talk about. In this article I hope to explain everything wrong with Resident Evil 7.

So, to get it out of the way, the game has some positives in its writing. For one, the Bakers are a lovable bunch of bat-shit crazy lunatics. Each member of the family is, for the most part, fleshed out and has a great personality that definitely helps to add the suspense of the game. The problem lies in the fact the chaser mechanic is abandoned half way through the game in favor of scripted jump-scares and a homage to the SAW franchise. It is ridiculous to me that you would throw away such a key part of the gameplay, especially when the alternative to the Bakers is the Molded, who are bland, boring, and not scary. The Molded straight up look like those horrible CGI abominations from the 1995 film version of the Langoliers. They aren’t scary at all, especially when they are problem easily solved by one round of buckshot to the face. It makes no sense that a game, which is clearly inspired by games like Outlast and Amnesia, would remove such a key mechanic. Part of what made Jack Baker scary was the fact he simply could not be killed. No matter how many times you tried, he would not die. All you could do was slow him down. That way the arsenal that you build up doesn’t feel too empowering. Personally I feel like the old Silent Hill games handled gunplay really well by making the use of firearms feel like a choice you had to make. You could easily dispatch enemies in that game with firearms but resources were scarce which forced you to rely on a slew of improvised melee weapons to conserve ammo. In Resident Evil 7 it feels like ammo is not nearly as scarce as it could be and the game on a whole seems to resonate more with the fourth installment as opposed to the originals like Capcom intended. This emphasis on action also makes the boss fights less of a struggle from what I’ve seen. Almost every boss can be solved by just shooting the weak spot. While it's passable for the first “real” fight with Jack, using the same formula again and again make the bosses forgettable.

This of course brings me to some of the glaring issues with the writing. While I love the Bakers, the gameplay, as well as the writing, does not capitalize on them. The first big issue with this is of course, Zoe. Zoe is the Baker that I honestly remove from the main three baddies. One, because she is meant to be your guiding force in the game. She is your Atlas in Resident Evil 7, without the plot twist. But, Zoe is far too enigmatic for her own good. For the first half of the game she is completely unseen, she is only heard. She speaks to you through telephones throughout the house that conveniently ring whenever the player completes a thing. How!? How does she know when to call!? Where is she calling from!? The answer: nobody knows. But, that is only the first problem with Zoe. The biggest crime committed by this character is the absolute bullshit moral choice that kicks off the climax of the game. First I need to give some context. So most of the game is spent getting parts to synthesize an antidote for Ethan’s (the player character’s) wife. When you finally rescue Mia (the wife), and Zoe, Zoe makes two antidotes. Then Jack shows up again and he has transformed into a massive Molded monstrosity in that typical campy Resident Evil style. Once Jack is dispatched, Zoe flat out tells you to use an antidote on him, because otherwise he is just gonna get right back up. And no, that is not an option, you have no friggin choice. So now that you have only one antidote, Ethan has to choose between Mia, his wife and the person who he came to the damn Baker estate to rescue, or Zoe, who has done nothing but run her damn mouth throughout half the game. And of course, as if we were watching the Walking Dead, Zoe gets all overly dramatic if you pick Mia. HOW IS THIS CHOICE DIFFICULT!? What’s worse is that choosing Zoe changes barely anything about the third act of the game. You still find the ship that Mia was working on at the beginning of the game. You still play as Mia for a bit. The only difference is that Zoe dies immediately after you make your choice to save her and you end up having to kill Mia as opposed to her sacrificing herself.

Thus we come to the big bad of the game. Eveline. The cause of everything in the game’s plot. Eveline had the potential to be a damn interesting villain, despite her incredibly tropey character. I was actually really intrigued by her when she first appeared. I have a thing for psychic children as villains. It is just a trope I find fun and enjoyable. Eveline was a great embodiment of that trope, but they messed it up so hard. While the ship level does an amazing job of explaining all of Mia’s backstory and her involvement with Eveline. The game comes completely full circle and gives as nice wrap up in that area. But the problem is it doesn’t, it doesn’t end there. Eveline still needs to be dealt with. Honestly the ship should have been the last part of the game. I would have loved to have seen Eveline become the Wesker of the new universe of Resident Evil games. Instead we got one of the most half assed plot twists I have seen in recent years. So throughout the game there is an elderly woman in a wheelchair that appears throughout the Baker estate. That silent old woman, is Eveline. Yes, the little girl that you see throughout the game is all grown up now. Somewhere I swear I can hear Shyamalan laughing maniacally. I was beyond enraged by this. It was the biggest cop out I have seen in a long time and it completely erased any intrigue that I had in Eveline’s character. It was like presenting me with a cheesecake, letting me have a few bites, and then taking it away and lighting it on fire. Eveline had so much potential as a series villain and a breath of fresh air for the franchise, and the threw it away. Judging by the ending of the game and the sudden appearance of Umbrella, it is not going to surprise me if we just get Wesker part two.

Overall, Resident Evil 7 isn’t a bad game by any means. Gameplay wise the game works, but it isn’t a masterpiece and it shows that the franchise still has a long way to go before it is able to recover from Resident Evil 6. The story has a lot of continuity errors that show a lack of communication between the writers of the main story and those responsible for the lore. For instance, the mention of Lucas not being a killer as said by the now cured Jack, despite evidence stating otherwise. Not to mention that entire vision quest bullshit that happens to Ethan where he is able to talk to Jack and Zoe and get some more exposition on Eveline, not that we needed it. Honestly the story has more issues than I can care to mention. But the game is still decent enough and it is still receiving DLC support so there is more story bits that could be fixed in the extra content. No disrespect if you enjoy the game, but I was not impressed by Resident Evil’s story. Despite the flaws, I believe that this game was a step in the right direction. Hopefully Resident Evil 8 will be better, because let’s be honest, they are gonna make another one. I hope you liked this article. There will be plenty more in the future.
