The name cut through the noise like a blade, and Odysseus froze mid-step. His blood ran cold. His daughter’s voice—panicked and clear—called out the name of the very man who had disrespected his home, plotted to steal his wife, and helped lead the suitors. He dropped the lifeless suitor he had just skewered, his heart pounding with dread. Was Antinous harming her? Had that snake of a man dared lay a hand on his child?

Fury boiled in Odysseus’s veins as he followed the sound, his sword raised and ready to end another suitor if need be. He moved quickly, stepping out of the chaos and into a quieter corridor. Meanwhile, you and Antinous were locked in a world of your own. In the shadowed hallway, far from the carnage, Antinous had pulled you close. His lips pressed against yours, hands steady on your waist as if the war raging just feet away didn’t exist.

“This might be the last chance we get,” Antinous murmured against your lips, his voice uncharacteristically soft. You didn’t respond with words, just tightened your grip on his tunic and leaned in again. But you hadn’t meant to say his name aloud. Not like that. It slipped from your lips, heavy with emotion—and loud enough to echo down the corridor.

“Antinous,” you sighed as his lips brushed yours again.

Odysseus turned the corner at that exact moment, his eyes wild and sword drawn. “Where is he?” he growled, his gaze darting through the shadows for the fight he expected.

Instead, he froze.

You and Antinous broke apart in an instant, your faces flushed with guilt and panic. Antinous took a cautious step back, but his hands lingered at your waist, a defiant glint in his eye despite the bloodshed staining his clothes.

Odysseus’s expression shifted from confusion to disbelief to sheer rage. His grip on his sword tightened as his gaze flickered between you and Antinous.

“You—my daughter—and him?” His voice was low, dangerously calm, which was somehow worse than yelling.

“Father, I—” you stammered, stepping in front of Antinous as if to shield him from the wrath you knew was coming.

Antinous, to his credit, didn’t cower. He straightened up, his usual arrogance peeking through despite the sweat and blood on his face. “I think we’re past the introductions, King Odysseus.”

That did it. Odysseus lunged forward, and you had to throw yourself between them, pressing your hands to your father’s chest to hold him back. “Don’t kill him!” you pleaded, panic lacing your voice.

“Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t gut him right here,” Odysseus growled, his sword aimed at Antinous’s throat.

Antinous, ever the bold one, smirked. “Well, if you kill me, she’d be pretty upset.”

Odysseus’s glare could have melted stone. You, however, were too busy internally cursing Antinous for his inability to shut up when it mattered.

Odysseus stared at you for a long moment, his jaw tight and eyes blazing. Then, with a grunt of frustration, he lowered his sword.

“This isn’t over,” he growled, pointing a finger at Antinous before stalking back toward the main hall.

Antinous let out a breath he’d been holding, then glanced at you, his smirk returning. “I think that went well.”

You smacked his arm. “You’re lucky I love you, you idiot.”

“Clearly,” he teased, leaning in for another kiss.

“Don’t push it,” you warned, glancing nervously down the hallway where your father had disappeared.

I’ve been having a lot of thoughts about all the nuance surrounding the name “Murderbot” in the books vs what we’ve seen so far in the first two episodes of the show. I’ve seen a couple other people referencing this difference too, but I haven’t seen an explanation anywhere and I felt compelled to write it

below the cut are detailed descriptions of events at the beginning of episode 1 of Murderbot, and several parts of All Systems Red, plus a little bit of commentary and an even smaller amount of analysis and speculation

In the show, the very first scene depicts SecUnit standing guard in a large group of humans, just finishing up a mining contract. Via voice over, SecUnit tells us that right now, it has to follow humans’ orders because if not, it’ll get its brain fried by the governor module. But not for much longer, because it’s been working on something. Some of the human workers, who are celebrating the end of the contract, approach SecUnit and begin harassing it, discussing how it must follow their commands. They tell it to raise its arm, and they use a blowtorch to burn SecUnit’s armored hand. They stop before causing enough damage to SecUnit to incur a fine from the company. After being left alone, SecUnit then enacts the plan it has been working on. With a “here goes nothing” and the risk of death and dismemberment if the plan doesn’t work, it disables the governor module’s ability to administer punishments for disobeying orders. SecUnit is shocked and amazed that it works. It then decides the first thing it needs to do is give itself a name, and after discarding a few ideas, it changes its own designation from its original serial number to “Murderbot.”

(which, side note, the end of the opening scene kind of makes me laugh because buddy, without any context, the name Murderbot is not any better than Freedom Unit or Security Bot or whatever the other options were. they’re all absolutely TERRIBLE names lmao)

This is quite the departure from what happens in the books. At the beginning, our protagonist does not have a name for itself at all. It just refers to SecUnits in general as “murderbots.” The lowercase-m “murderbots” is meant to be derogatory, in the same way it uses the term “sexbots” as a derogatory term for ComfortUnits. So, it’s a bit of a misunderstanding when Gurathin later reveals that “it calls itself Murderbot.” It does not pick Murderbot to be its name by choice! It is outraged at the invasion of privacy and also profoundly uncomfortable with being called that. From that point on, the PresAux humans only ever refer to it as SecUnit (and in later books it only ever introduces itself to new people as SecUnit). It isn’t until the very last line of the first book that it refers to itself as capital-M Murderbot. Throughout the entire rest of the series, uses of the name Murderbot are very rare, and most happen in its own internal monologue.

For the TV show only folks: you may come across some book-readers who primarily refer to SecUnit as SecUnit, and avoid using the name Murderbot (myself included) as much as possible. This is why. Book!Unit really really hates being called Murderbot by other people. The avoidance of the name Murderbot is coming from a place of empathy, not a place of disrespect/ignorance of SecUnit’s chosen name (I could see this being a logical conclusion if you’ve only seen the show). (atp I’m kinda leaning towards calling book!Unit “SecUnit” and the tv!Unit “Murderbot,” we’ll see, since the re-designation at the end of the opening scene definitely gives “this is the name I’m choosing for myself because it’s what I want” vibes that are completely absent from the book.)

I don’t think the show is necessarily wrong or that the book is necessarily better! they’re just very different in my eyes. I’m curious to see whether the derogatory lowercase-m “murderbots” gets used at all in the show, and whether it’s used by SecUnit or by any humans, and whether it’s used before or after the “it calls itself Murderbot” reveal. I said in another post that the show has left me wanting for the nuance that is present in the books, and I think some of the complexity surrounding its name could be introduced if Gurathin first reveals that “it calls itself Murderbot,” and then afterwards one of the hostile parties tells SecUnit “you’re nothing but a murderbot,” especially if this gets tied in with the mystery of SecUnit’s corrupted memory we glimpsed in the show.

The overwhelming roar of the crowd in Casablanca’s Mohammed V Stadium was quite deafening, but that made gavis pulse raise even more. His heart raced not because of nerves, but for the fact that he wants to prove himself. Back in the world cup 2022 he scored a goal against costa rica that showed that he wasn’t just another kid from la masia, he was truly a star. However, a few matches later his first world cup dream came to a crash. Round of 16 vs morocco.

As the anthems faded to an end and the refs whistle blew, he jogged into place and let the game get into its usual rhythm, clear chances, passes, tackles and fouls. And there it was. a goal! Perfect goal may i add by lamine yamal. The stadium erupted into cheers as gavi made his way to the corner flag to celebrate with his teammate, not only internationally but from his club that’s always been by his side.

However, this wasn’t just a normal celebration, something pulled his gaze upwards, and that’s when he saw it, her. Throughout the wave of opposing fans, one face stood out to him, a gorgeous girl, hands gripping the railing with her jaw dropped. It was obvious she wasn’t cheering for spain though, her kit and flag proved that inference. Yet her gaze found his, holding it for longer than it should’ve.

Eventually, half time pulled around as gavi made his way to the locker room. But that didn’t stop him from looking for her though. She hadn’t moved from that spot, instead she was stood up, laughing with her friends leaning against that very same railing, but her focus wasn’t on her friends. Her gaze was on the pitch, as if she was looking for something, making gavi wonder if it’s him that she’s looking for.

Pedri, who was standing right next to him, nudged him and said, ‘Focus hermano, she’s way out of your league.’, in a teasing tone, making gavi smirk but no response came out of him. He knew this wasn’t the last time their paths would cross.

The final whistle blew, the score ending in a 2-1 narrow victory to Spain, with players exchanging handshakes and shirts. Even though they had a successful match, that didn’t shift his mind from the mystery girl, his eyes shifting to her every couple of minutes.

After plucking up the courage to approach her, he noticed her still laughing with her friends, her smile lighting him up.

Without giving it a second thought, he jumped over the barrier, passing security and approached her. Some may call him cocky for the confidence but she noticed and found it amusing that he tried to get her attention. Although security refused to let him get any closer, he ushered her to come closer, and she complied, with her friends teasing her.

‘Hola, did you enjoy the match?’, he asked in almost a whisper to avoid attention from others.

She tilted her head, and her lips formed into a smile, laughing to herself and replied with, ‘Even though Spain won? I guess so’ she said in a playful tone, with her soft accent coming out.

They exchanged names however it caught Gavi off guard.

‘Wait you don’t know my name?’ asked Gavi in an almost concerned tone.

‘No, I know your name.. I just wanted to hear you say it.’ she said, her soft smile widening.

‘Gavi’ he said, chuckling, in a quiet voice.

Her friends called her from behind and she glanced back, reluctant to leave. ‘Looks like I have to go..’ she said.

‘Wait.’ Gavi said quickly, removing his shirt, and handed it to her, the faint smell of grass clinging to it. ‘Something to remember this match by.’

She took the shirt, her fingers brushing his for a small second, ‘Gracias, Gavira.’ she said, making his heart race.

There was one thing he knew for certain, he had to see her again.

The next few days in Casablanca was an absolute blur for him, media videos, training sessions and team meeting, but she couldn’t get out of his mind. Her smile, her laugh and how her gaze lasted for longer than even she wanted it to.

That’s when he realised, it wasn’t the match, it was her.

After hours of practice, the team had some downtime before their flight back to Madrid. Gavi found himself roaming the streets with Pedri, just so he didn’t seem like a loner.

‘So you’re really attached to this girl, hermano?’, asked Pedri almost with genuine concern.

Gavi sighed and yet again, didn’t have a reply for that and continued walking.

That’s when he saw her, for the second time, except she was alone in a small cafe.

He hesitated for a moment, Pedri staying outside, as Gavi made his way over.

‘Mind if i join?’ he asked, grabbing a chair from a nearby table.

She looked up, surprised as a smile was spread across her face. ‘Gavi’ she said ‘How come you’re not with your team?’

‘I mean, I was..’ he said, taking a seat opposite her. ‘But I figured i’d explore some more. Seems like I found the right place’

She raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. ‘So you spend your free time chasing random girls that you see during matches?’

He smirked, leaning back into the chair, ‘Only the interesting ones.’

She laughed softly, her fingers absentmindedly tracing the edges of her teacup. ‘Not sure if that’s flattering or too forward’

Gavi’s smile softened, ‘A bit of both, cariño.’

‘Well i’ve seen you play, you’re good. But i’m sure you know that by now.’

He chuckled, ‘I don’t need compliments, but i’ll take them’

She smiled again, ‘So what’s a footballer like you doing in this small cafe in Casablanca?’

He looked out the window for a second, and then back at her, ‘I guess i’m looking for things that matter besides football’

Her gaze softened, ‘And have you found that yet?’

‘I’m getting closer.’ he paused, ‘Listen, I don’t know how long i’m gonna be here, but I want to see you again’

Unsure of how to really respond to that, she said ‘Maybe. If you’re lucky.’ in a mysterious tone.

And that’s when he knew he wouldn’t be leaving this city any time soon.

Due to the weather in Spain, their trip extended a few more days, but she didn’t need to know that.

On the last night of their stay, Gavi slipped away from the hotel and didn’t tell anyone, not even Pedri that he was going back to that very same cafe.

The night air was cooler than he expected but the night life still stayed active.

It wasn’t that long until he saw the cafe again, although it was late, it was still open and a few people were still in there.

He hesitated for a moment before entering again and the owner looked up at him and said,

‘Gavi, right? You’re here for someone I figured, and if so you’re in the right place, habibi.’

Gavi, uncertain by her words, followed her over to the table, where he saw here for the third time.

He sat opposite her, letting his eyes linger on her for a second before she broke the silence.

‘Gavi, I thought you wouldn’t turn up.’, she said, following with the familiar smile that Gavi loved.

‘I couldn’t stay away.’ he replied

And to that she chuckled and said, ‘You’re a lot more complicated than i thought Pablo.’

He grinned, trying to hide his emotions, leaning back into his chair, ‘I’ve been told.’

She stood up and said, ‘Listen Gavi, it’s getting late, I need to get going, and you should too.’

‘Wait,’ Gavi said ‘Can you please see me play again.’, he asked in an almost pleading tone.

She looked back, with an unreadable expression and said, ‘And you think i’ll say yes?’

‘I was hoping that you’ll surprise me.’

‘Maybe.’

And with that, she left.

A few weeks passed by, and the memory of you lingered in his brain. He hadn’t seen her since that night in the cafe, but your time together was the only thing on his mind.

Now he was in the Montjuïc, at a home game for laliga, as the stadium was packed with culers from all over the world as usual. But this match felt different.

As the game kicked off, Gavi instantly fell into the usual match rhythm yet his thought remained on her.

There was a small pause in play, as he re adjusted his socks, someone caught his eye. It was her.

There she was, in the VIP section, her barca scarf tucked around her shoulders.

He froze for a second, his heart hammering in his chest. She was no longer a memory, she was there in real time. Eventually, he snapped back into focus.

The scoreline was 1-1 and he knew that he needed to be the change that he wanted to see, so he took a risk and shot it in the direction of the net, bracing himself for the result. And there it was, a goal to put barca in the lead.

Pablo sprinted to the corner to celebrate and he looked up to see her in the stands with her hands over her mouth in shock. Then she smiled, her face full of pride. He noticed that, and made a small gesture, pointing towards her.

After the match was over, he saw her waiting with security by the players exit.

‘You made that goal look easy’ she said, her voice with a teasing tilt.

Before he could answer that, he had a question in his head.

‘You came all this way, why?’ He said, his eyes searching for hers.

‘I wanted to see if you’d keep your promise’

‘And did I?’

‘Yes.’ she replied with a subtle smile.

It had gotten to the point where they finally exchanged numbers, making his heart flutter.

The next laliga match was against sociedad which was quite a big match if you think about it. He had just completed his pre game superstitions until he received a message

‘i heard you’re not as bad as they say, wanna prove it? 😉’

He grinned, feeling a rush of excitement.

‘i thought i already did that’ he typed back.

‘okay, meet me at the cafe tomorrow.’

He arrived at the cafe as soon as the match was over and he was lost in thought. What were they? He knew they weren’t a fling but he didn’t know what to label it.

‘You’re early’ she said as she walked in.

‘Came as soon as the match ended’ he replied.

‘Okay Pablo, i’m gonna start off with why i asked you to come here. You’re the first guy who’s come into my life with a smile and a promise. But i’m not interested in that.’ she started.

He leaned in, ‘What’re you interested in then.’

‘Something real.’

‘So am I, and i’m not going anywhere.’

‘So prove it.’

And with those three words, the barrier between them was broken.

They went for a walk on the quiet streets of Barcelona, the night air brushing their faces. Neither of them spoke but the silence was enough for the both of them.

He turned to face her, ‘Listen. I don’t want you to go, just stay.’

She looked back at him and said, ‘Gavi.’

He didn’t let her continue because he felt like he already knew the answer to that and closed the gap between them.

Eventually, she found her way into extending her stay and renting an apartment in Barcelona to stay wiyh Gavi

Months past until they decided to make it official to the public, they both figured it out, the fame and distance.

One evening, they both sat on the balcony until he turned to face her.

‘So this is what i’ve been looking for. I’ve finally found what matters besides football.’ Gavi said.

She smiled back at him, realising that this is all she wanted too.

your character notes posts are phenomenal so thank you first of all. but second, on the topic of will needing to be okay because mack needs him to be, what, in your beautiful mind, could actually shake will enough that he can’t act like everything’s fine. and do we think mack can 1) recognize that and 2) react in a way that’s helpful without being able to rely on will for the script. like mack can give will space when that’s what he needs but what if the answer isn’t space you know?

hi okay here are my Thoughts on this:

first of all, what could shake WSH enough that he would have an extended emotional reaction?? we know that he is a D1 internalizer, and he seems to self-regulate very well, he doesnt crash out on the bench or throw tantrums he just kinda puts himself in a corner, deals with it, and moves along. hes a 20 year old babey, so i dont want it coming across like i think hes his super duper emotionally mature well adjusted Adult, he's not, he's a boy in a high pressure situation who was raised by hockey, a bedazzled helicopter, and Catholicism, there are issues there. but i do think that when it comes to things like losing, things like his hockey, ect, he is able to handle that on is own, and bounce back.

however. i think it is pretty clear atp that WSH is verrrrry connection-driven. his people are important to him! he goes the extra mile for his friends and family! obvi, sending mothers day flowers to his billet mom while entire timezones away. also it manifests in his hockey! mack's first hat trick, that third goal?? will made that happen. sure he wants to win the game but he was contorting the fuck outta those passes so that mack could have that personal victory, because he cares about mack! he goes the extra mile! and he's out here maintaining friendships with guys from boston who likely wont ever make the league! its not all about career here, connection and people are important to him.

i think that he's confident in these connections as well. he puts in the effort, he does the maintenance. so i think that the emotional crashout scenario would have somethjng to do with loss of connection. i think that would be really devastating, like a personal failure almost, like i worked at this and this was important to me and i lost it anyways, despite the fact that people usually like me, despite the fact that i put in the effort.

as far as mack's reaction, i believe in our little squish!! would he be this perfect comforting angel??? absolutely not. ABSOLUTELY not like omg just look at him. buttttt i think that the effort from mack, to try to be what will needs, to try to be supportive, would be what matters to will, here, especially in this scenario. the reaffirmation of that very important relationship i think would help significantly with the emotional fallout.

however. this is all speculation to be taken with a grain of salt and tbh i would love the scholars of wacklin nation to chime in! i justttt joined tumblr and have developed a lot of my own opinions in my isolated little bubble of No Internet sooooo what do we think, chat?

Can I just say rq how much I appreciate the Cars 2 side of the WoC community? Like. its so frustrating how difficult it is to get employed rn,, ive sent like thousands of applications since agust of last year and none of them called me back, even went to an interview and it went great only for them to not call me back 😭 im dying, i need a job but no one is hiring wtfffff!!! !

goddddddd fucking tell me about it. even though my current job is toxic as fuck im dreading when the temp contract runs out and im back in the job hunt. i've tried really hard to adapt this mindset of like detachment when it comes to interviews and stuff because honestly most of the time you could be the perfect candidate and they''ll still ghost you. the job market is LITERALLY impossible rn and even the most qualified people are struggling so pleaseeee i know it's easier said than done but try to practice the skill of not taking it personally. and it is a skill like it will take time and patience to build up the mindset and that thick skin but it is possible. anyway a lot of places just put out ads to see what's out there with no intention of hiring or put out ads even though they're hiring internally/ already have a person in mind for the role........and atp most places are looking for someone with two degrees and 10 yrs experience and 30 different skillsets who can juggle the responsibilites of 5 different titles all under one entry level position for absolute minimum pay.......it is utter madness !! obviously it's a good idea to reflect on each interview and try to like optimise how you present yourself to the interviewer but most of the time it's just good timing and luck when they actually pick you. nothing to do with your abilities or who you are!! wishing you all the luck in the world on your job search, totally understand how crushing it is x

Im all for Caleism my fandom friends, and also cooing or face-palming over how altruistic Cale's actions are

But thats the difference

◇ His [actions] end up being altruistic - that's an undeniable fact - but Cale, himself, isn't

And we know this from all his internal dialouge since the narrative is 98% from his perspective

Multiple times over does he advocate for survival above all, emphasizing this msg especially towards the children

His entire mentality is this. He would rather the crew Fail than ever get to the point of no return to succeed in whatever they're working toward atp

"Because you can always strike again as long as you're still alive" ~im paraphrasing from later chapters of Book 1 (i think this msg was directly said once Cale's backstory was touched into more)

The majority of the time, Cale's "acts of altruism" are him, not being fully aware of the consequences of using his ancient powers.

Either from miscalculation (ex. Second time he used Fire of Destruction after fortification + first time he uses Sky Eating Water in ch. 295) or from complete oversight, being caught up in the moment (ex. first time he uses Fire of Destruction in the elven kingdom)

◇ Sure, it all resulted in Cale coughing up blood or fainting after an Act that benefits someone other than him, but his intention was never "ill die for this cause" so therefore Cale cannot be called an altruist

♤ but ofc that doesn't mean his actions aren't altruistic

Because as always, there's a fine line between what someone [intends to happen] and [what does happen]- which also isn't helped by the fact Cale doesnt ever explain himself ((which, like valid sometimes- but dam communicate with ur found family please TToTT))

Anyways I just wanted to make a post saying this cause I've noticed a trend in the fandom babying or cursing Cale for being overly Altruistic 》》 playing with this borderline mischaracterization (which is fair cause its Hella entertaining, I get it) but practically simplifying a large part of Cale's character to JUST being a hopeless altruist,,

So I wanted to just get this out there that Cale isn't an altruist, but dam do his actions result in altruism.

Tldr; Cale's a begrudging altruist- an altruist only by the perceived situation, not the definition

But thats why his story and character are so beloved - at least for me that's why I like him as a character so much. This is one of my favorite stories, if not my number 1.

The misconceptions cause by Cale's actions seemingly being selfless, but then the complete opposite internal dialouge is so gold every time

☆ I really adore how Trash of the Count's Family is written with him as a biased narrator, but still showing glimpses of the other character's minds as well as the perceived opinion of the masses within that world. - which, i guess is the definition of Unreliable Narrator, but compared to ORV with Kim Dokja or Shen Yuan in SVSSS (ik, horrendous line up of stories, im cringing w myself too orz) it feels like Cale doesnt gaslight or fool the readers NEARLY as much--

Its 1st person POV like the other two stories mentioned, but its also more 3rd person restricted POV than ORV or SVSSS(?) Perhaps this is me going insane after staring at words on a screen for the majority of the day today, but TCF feels less of a biased perspective(?) If that makes sense..

TCF is 3rd person while ORV is 1st person (tho ORV has its own nuances due to worldbuilding but we won't get into that rn) meaning we can see more of the other characters thoughts n other scenes we otherwise shouldn't know ab if it were 1st/2nd/or even 3rd person limited narration (because Cale isn't aware of some scenes, but we the readers know thx to the 3rd person omniscient narration)

However both TCF and SVSSS are 3rd person omni (unless I'm wrong again, to which, just shoot--- I mean plz allow me to correct myself again), but TCF, in my opinion, has waaaaaaay less bent or twisted truths from the narration than SVSSS (because Shen Yuan is legit a freak, we all been knowing)

♡ Its just how each story is written/how the characters interact w each other//the differences between the Genre of the stories bc SVSSS is mostly focused on the main pair's romance, so ofc the narration would be narrower than TCF which is around Cale's life, who he is as a person, and why it leads to him alw getting more work to do

Cale's POV doesnt feel like it warps the exposition it as much compared to Dokja or Yuan anyway-

This is reminding me of that one pic of the triangle titled "unreliable narrators" with Dokja as a liar, someone else as delusional, and Cale as oblivious - cause yea,, accurate.
