ive seen a few akari has internet on the arc phone posts but hear me out:
ingo, his divine xtransceiver, and moderated social media
moderated so he doesnt break the time line ofc
it starts after the inital fuss of ingos fall into hisui, after being rescued and be selected as Lady Sneaslers warden. when the dust settles, ingo finally has time to look at the belongings that came with him. the odd watch like device he had that doesnt tell time he sets aside at first, its original position taken by the warden bracelet that is a sign of his position. but somehow its face flares with light, and it is transformed, slightly. golden lines and white planes replace black and red faces, and what he had assumed to be blank instead shows... him?Â
anyways he figures out it take photos! and the first post (why heâs posting and how he knows how to post is handwaved pls, idk myself lol) is a verrrrry close up photo of his eye. the handle is wardeningoPC which i bet would confuse some people on what the PC means. pokemon center? pokemon coordinator? (its pearl clan)Â
the account starts small back in the future, mostly pictures of the mount coronet landscape at different times, with captions in a weird mix of galarian and old sinnohan. the posts garner a small following, some rather concerned when ingo posts a picture from lady sneaslers cave of the raging blizzard outside. ingo can see the comments, mostly, but doesnt tend to reply. anyways he takes alot of these pics, and they look really nice. divine cameras have really nice resolution yknow
and then lady sneasler has kits. and what else would he want to take pictures of after that?? the people in the future are going absolutely bananas because this random guy is posting pictures of a completely extinct variant of pokemon, and babies at that. this is where the moderation comes into effect, as research inquiries, bribes, and even threats flood the account wanting to know about/obtain these rare mons. ingo sees none of this, most explicit mentions of the future are removed anyways. not sure if that moderation can be seen in the future though? ingo replies so rarely people would be unable to tell what he sees and doesnt see anyways
the sneasel pics skyrocket the account to internet fame in a week. people are speculating on who the account belongs to, what kind of pokemon are shown in the photos, where the owner is, etc.Â
(mmm i have more thoughts but thats for later i think)
#ingo: funny number goup hahaha#internet: WHO IS THIS MAN#pokemon#ingo#submas#is this coherent. no#wardeningopcau#vee talks pokemon

If memory serves right you mentioned professional gamer!xiao?
I hope i deliver! (Ofc hope ur day is going well and ur not shriveling up in the heat like i am)
PG(professional gamer)! Xiao would absolutely have THOUSANDS of fan
Most would be simps, but a good portion would be impressed by his speedrun skills, how well he handle jumpscares and doesn't interrupt dialogue? Helloooo??? Hand in marriage rn.
I cannot see him with facecam though, he probably though his facial expressions arent as good as other streamers who are more lively than him. I can see him being a casual gamer sometimes playing co-op shooters? A few peaceful games for his more younger audience if he has one
Onto his fandom...
I can see his fans being um.. feral? If he ever posted a picture of his face i can see him blowing up on every social media in mere hours, edits and everything being done. Hell, a picture of his shadow would make them lose it. But he would absolutely keep his fandom on a strict leash especially if hes aware of their ages. Im rolling off of ganyu's story quest, that he would be strict with his chat and have many mods to control their outrageous behavior. His fandom would probably would be the most well behaved out there.
But if he gets hate? Prayin for them. I hope they're okay. Passive aggressive threats đ°
His gaming style?
I can see him playing occasionally with Hu Tao or Childe, maybe in a horror game he doesn't know about
"You go first."
"Im not going first."
"Oh my god go first-" and it keeps going on like that for awhile till Xiao goes first and gets jumpscared envitably.
I dont see him actually screaming or getting scared? More like a huff and "you guys are dramatic" thing but on the rare occasion he is scared its just a swift movement of the mouse and maybe he hit his mic thats all. A few curse words thats it.
The games he would play?
I can see him playing multiple games, mostly small indie game devs from itch.io maybe a few big games but he likes giving credits to smaller game devs on steam and other websites but on occasion he posts a poll just in case his viewers get bored of his style :/
Another thing, he would absolutely have a day dedicated to having no mic or anything just him playing a game like Unpacking or Minecraft, or calm game like stardew maybe some soft copyright free music.
Charity events?
Bro raises thousands đ especially if theres a goal involved? Met the same day.
Now im back in my minecraft phase purely because the new update but The Warden being out gives me so many ideas about PG!Xiao.
Him coming across it the first time and freezing up, because the warden has a heartbeat effect that fades your screen in and out its literally so terrifying even if you know its there.
The clicking noises is horrendous, Xiao literally audibly saying "Hell no." As soon as he hears it literally SNIFF HIM OUT (it sniffed me before and i almost cried) and trying to escape, but pisses it off more and it uses That horrendously loud sonic screech to kill him because oh my god you cant tower away from it to escape and he stared in shock while chat spams F's in chat.
oh boy. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR BLESSING ME DEAR FISCHL ANON <33 sorry this took so long, but i had to stare a bit at this ask and got lazy answering for a time but psht
more brainrot under the cut hehe
yes, i did indeed talk about professional gamer!xiao and it has been on my mind during my finals :D (and i'm doing well, my body finally doesn't die that much anymore when going outside but i'm still a bit sick ew)
PG!xiao would be on a fame level similar to dream. and i stand by this. this man is fan service in person, of course he has millions of followers.
and yes, most would be simps, but then they would look closer and be like, damn this man actually knows what he's doing. this man is definition of speedrun, minecraft speed run? genshin speedrun? acnh speedrun? any kind of speedrun and you bet he did it.
hand in marriage, always. goddamn, he would get so many messages, and it's not only his fans, but also other gamers and influencers. xiao tries to ignore them, but he always gets blushy and flustered over it.
he first started without a face cam, and then had one, but with bad lightening. now that he's a bit more confident, he still has one, but sometimes it gets too much and he just,,, puts a paper over his cam or smth
this man slays in every game he touches. he just has the talent for gaming, you bet he's totally into valorant (maybe that's his professional part), cod, even fortnite (but he slowly started hating this game because of the random kids in it), but also grinding games like hayday or others. he totally has animal crossing new horizon and his island is just... perfection. he's a rich island owner and will spoil the shit out of his fellow islanders.
feral fans for xiao. yes. they see him as their god, too beautiful and skilled for this world. this man doesn't only have a model face but is also a very skilled gamer (professional gamer in valorant, wins in minecraft contests all the time, etc.) and his style... OH AND HIS HAIR. you bet it's his friends who thought eyeliner would make his eyes pop (goddamn he's just beautiful and gorgeous and-) you bet xiao has like the whole color palete just as eyeliners. and he slays in every color
xiao has an army of mods. most of them are older than him, which is why he chose them, and they are very strict with the rules. because yes, you have to keep his fans at a very, very, VERY tight lash. he literally trains them- they can be feral in his twitch chat, his comments, but as soon they are in other fandoms/chats/whatever, they must behave. and they do. nobody wants to be responsible for a disappointed xiao. he is very strict with his chat, but let's them have their 5 minutes (chat always breaks in those 5 minutes lmao)
xiao getting hate. first of all. WHO?! WHO IS HATING ON HIM?? probably another streamer wanting some drama for more fame. yeah, big mistake. xiao's fanbase cancelling the shit out of them. playing FBI and finding dirt and the reason why this streamer doesn't stream anymore. and this all in 6 hours. not even a day, 6 hours. xiao didn't even realize what his fans were doing, until a friend wrote him how twitter is blowing up.
xiao fanbase is now feared by all. streamers, gamers, influencers. the boogiemen of the internet. and xiao is their god. lmaoo-
him playing with childe and hu tao!!! yes pls. hu tao will always vote for horror games and she will search the internet for the best ones. childe just cackling in the background- fans love it.
xiao would play everything he gets his hands on. naturally the games as professional gamer, but also relaxing games. and he will totally play snake.io
this man is definition of indie game enjoyer and every smaller game dev will pray for their moment- the moment when xiao plays their game and rates it (xiao doesn't know the power he holds. he really doesn't)
viewers will never get bored of xiao, but it's still a big fear of his. his fans will love watching him doing anything- just breathing would be fine too and they will lose their mind. and their hearts melt when xiao is like, uhm yeah today i'm doing something new, so you won't get bored- HHHHHHH
and yes. once xiao does smth, he is dedicated to it and will do it, and nothing can stop him. 24hrs streams? he will play 24hrs, nothing can stop him. no mic day? that means no mic day.
charity events. okay listen. everyone knows xiao is big on charity. and if you wanna look good (as a famous person) you better give the man a few thousands. and his fans? they don't want to get outplayed by attention seeking bitches (that's what they always say, and this is why they always spare more than a few bucks)
also- minecraft. xiao is a minecraft kid, and he will always come back to his roots. this is why i think PG!xiao would be part of this dream/tommyinnit/snapnap/etc. group. not very often, but as soon the peeps say he joins- everyone freaks tf out. all their views go the hell up once xiao joins them, and you bet they want him as often as possible with them (jokes on them, xiao is an anxious little bean, he would rather rot in his room all alone instead of talking to people. his excuse is training for next tournaments lmao- and it works everytime)
xiao would die. and he did. wanna bet he screeched? it's the newest tiktok trend.
"okay, we doing good..." a few seconds pass.
"click. click. click."
"oh fuuuu-", is barely heard, more seconds of xiao muttering and running tf away.
"SREEEEECH."
"SCREEEEEEEEE-", xiao's screech was louder.
yeah- xiao would be trendsetter for tiktok trends and it's all his fans fault. yk those videos which show the videos to the sounds and go viral? since people don't know where thos sounds came from? yes, those. thanks to those, everybody knows it's xiao's screech.
GOD DAMN- PG!XIAO JUST HITS DIFFERENT- okay but, another thing. i'm not really into tournament valorant, but i know a group is slaying rather often there (or i think so??) anyways, xiao is part of said group. what would his chosen character be? cuz i see him as multi player, he slays in everyone he chooses. just as always. xiao just slaying.

@superohclair oh god okay please know these are all just incoherent ramblings so like, idk, please feel free to add on or ignore me if im just wildly off base but this is a bad summary of what ive been thinking about and also my first titans/batman meta?? (also, hi!)
okay so for the disclaimer round: I am not an actual cultural studies major, nor do I have an extensive background in looking at the police/military industrial complex in media. also my comics knowledge is pretty shaky and im a big noob(I recently got into titans, and before that was pretty ignorant of the dceu besides batman) so Iâll kind of focus in on the show and stuff im more familiar with and apologize in advance?. basically im just a semi-educated idiot with Opinions, anyone with more knowledge/expertise please jump in! this is literally just the bullshit I spat out incoherently off the top of my head. did i mention im a comics noob? because im a comics noob.
so on a general level, I think we can all agree that batman as a cultural force is somewhat on the conservative side, if not simply due to its age and commercial positioning in American culture. there are a lot of challenges and nuances to that and itâs definitely expanding and changing as DC tries to position itself in the way that will...make the most money, but all you have to do is take a gander through the different iterations of the stories in the comics and itâll smack you in the fucking face. like compare the first iteration of Jason keeping kids out of drugs to the titans version and youâve got to at least chuckle. at the end of the day, this is a story about a (white male) billionaire who fights crime.
to be fair, Iâd argue the romanticization of the police isnât as aggressive as it could beâthey are most often presented as corrupt and incompetent. However, considering the main cop characters depicted like Jim Gordon, the guys in Gotham (itâs been a while since I saw it, sorry) are often the romanticized âgood fewâ (and often or almost always white cis/het men), thatâs on pretty shaky ground. I donât have the background in the comics strong enough to make specific arguments, so Iâll cede the point to someone who does and disagrees, but having recently watched a show that deals excellently with police incompetence, racism, and brutality (7 Seconds on Netflix), I feel at the very least something is deeply missing. like, analysis of race wrt police brutality in any aspect at all whatsoever.
I think it can be compellingly read that batman does heavily play into the military/police industrial complex due to its takes on violenceâjust play the Arkham games for more than an hour and youâll know what I mean. to be a little less vague, even though batman as a franchise valorizes âpsychiatric treatmentâ and ânonviolence,â the entire game seems pretty aware it characterizes treatment as a madhouse and nonviolence as breaking someoneâs back or neck magically without killing them because youâre a âgood guy.â while it is definitely subversive that the franchise even considers these elements at all, they donât always do a fantastic job living up to them.
and then when you consider the fetishization of tools of violence both in canon and in the fandom, it gets worse. same with prisonsâif anything it dehumanizes people in prisons even more than like, cop shows in general, which is pretty impressive(ly bad). like thereâs just no nuance afforded and arkham is generally glamorized. the fact that one of the inmates is a crocodile assassin, I will admit, does not help. im not really sure how to mitigate that when, again, one of the inmates is a crocodile assassin, but I think my point still stands. fuck you, killer croc. (im just kidding unfuck him or whatever)
not to take this on a Jason Todd tangent but I was thinking about it this afternoon and again when thinking about that cop scene again and in many ways he does serve as a challenge to both batmanâs ideology as well as the ideology of the franchise in general. his depiction is always a bit of a sticking point and itâs always fascinating to me to see how any given adaptation handles it. like Jasonâs ââstreetââ origin has become inseparable from his characterization as an angry, brash, violent kid, and that in itself reflects a whole host of cultural stereotypes that I might argue occasionally/often dip into racialized tropes (like just imagine if he wasnât white, ok). red hood (a play on robin hood and the outlaws, as I just realized...today) is in my exposure/experience mostly depicted as a villain, but he challenges batmanâs no-kill philosophy both on an ethical and practical level. every time the joker escapes he kills a whole score more of innocent people, let alone the other roguesâis it truly ethical to let him live or avoid killing him for the cost of one life and let others die?
moreover, batmanâs ââblindââ faith in the justice system (prisons, publicly-funded asylum prisons, courts) is conveniently elidedâthe story usually ends when he drops bad guy of the day off at arkham or ties up the bad guys and lets the police come etc etc. part of this is obviously bc car chases are more cinematic than dry court procedurals, but there is an alternate universe where bruce wayne never becomes batman and instead advocates for the arkham warden to be replaced with someone competent and the system overhauled, or in programs encouraging a more diverse and educated police force, or even into social welfare programs. (I am vaguely aware this is sometimes/often part of canon, but I donât think itâs fair to say itâs the main focus. and again, I get itâs not nearly as cinematic).
overall, I think the most frustrating thing about the batman franchise or at least what Iâve seen or read of it is that while it does attempt to deal with corruption and injustice at all levels of the criminal justice system/government, it does so either by treating it as âjust how life isâ or having Dick or Jim Gordon or whoever the fuckjust wipe it out by âeliminating the dirty cops,â completely ignoring the non-fantasy ways these problems are dealt with in real life. it just isnât realistic. instead of putting restrictions on police violence or educating cops on how to use their weapons or putting work into eradicating the culture of racism and prejudice or god basically anything itâs just all cinematized into the âgood fewâ triumphing over the bad...somehow. its always unsatisfying and ultimately feels like lip service to me, personally.
this also dovetails with the very frustrating way mental health/âinsanityâ or âmadnessâ is dealt with in canon, very typical of mainstream fiction. like for example:âmadness is like gravity, all it takes is a little push.â yikes, if by âpushâ you mean significant life stressors, genetic load, and environemntal influences, then sure. challenge any dudebro joker fanboy to explain exactly what combination of DSM disorders the joker has to explain his âââinsanityâââ and see what happens. (these are, in fact, my plans for this Friday evening. im a hit at parties).
anyway I do really want to wax poetic about that cop scene in 1x06 so im gonna do just that! honestly when I first saw that I immediately sat up like Iâd sat on a fucking tack, my cultural studies senses were tingling. the whole âfuck batmanâ ethos of the show had already been interesting to me, esp in s1, when bruce was basically standing in for the baby boomers and dick being our millennial/GenX hero. I do think dick was explicitly intended to appeal to a millennial audience and embody the millennial ethos. By that logic, the tension between dick and Jason immediately struck me as allegorical (Jason constantly commenting on dick being old, outdated, using slang dick doesnât understand and generally being full of youthful obnoxious fistbumping energy).
Even if subconsciously on the part of the writers, jasonâs over-aggressive energy can be read as a commentary on genZâseen by mainstream millennial/GenX audiences as taking things too far. Like, the cops in 1x06 could have been Nick Zuccoâs hired men or idk pretty much anyone, yet they explicitly chose cops and even had Jason explain why he deliberately went after them for being cops so dick (cop) could judge him for it. his rationale? he was beaten up by cops on the street, so heâs returning the favor. he doesnât have the focused ârighteousâ rage of batman or dick/nightwing towards valid targets, he just has rage at the world and specifically the systemâframed here as unacceptable or fanatical. as if like, dressing up like a bat and punching people at night is, um, totally normal and uncontroversial.
on a slightly wider scope, the show seems to internally struggle with its own progressive ethosâon the one hand, they hire the wildly talented chellah man, but on the other hand they will likely kill him off soon. or they cast anna diop, drawing wrath from the loudly racist underbelly of fandom, but sideline her. perhaps itâs a genuine struggle, perhaps they simply donât want to alienate the bigots in the fanbase, but the issue of cops stuck out to me when I was watching as an social issue where they explicitly came down on one side over the other. jasonâs characterization is, I admit and appreciate, still nuanced, but Iâd argue thatâs literally just bc heâs a white guy and a fan favorite. cast an actor of color as Jason and see how fast fandom and the writerâs room turns on him.
anyway i donât really have the place to speak about what an explicitly nonwhite!cop!dick grayson would look like, but I do think it would be a fascinating and exciting place to start in exploring and correcting the kind of vague and nebulous complaints i raise above. (edit: i should have made more clear, i mean in the show, which hasnât dealt with dickâs heritage afaik). also, thereâs something to be said about the cop vs detective thing but I donât really have the brain juice or expertise to say it? anyway if you got this far i hope it was at least interesting and again pls jump in id love to hear other peopleâs takes!!
tldr i took two (2) cultural studies classes and have Opinions
#wow this was a hot fucking mess#i tried to be organized but my thoughts weren't coming out super well#again anyone interested please feel free to jump in or correct me at any place you feel like#i die on the ''jason todd would be treated horribly by fandom if he were a character of color' hill tho#i could go on about 1x06 until im blue in the face but that's the uhh overview. the executive summary.#dc titans#i need meta tags and shit for this show#god help me in too deep#finding the meta side of fandom was a GIFT tho i love this shit#so excited

My pilot survey response for tomorrow under the cut! I could write a whole separate essay on things I didnât like about sweet enchantment, but heres a hot 1.5k about social issues.
Sweet enchantments has as solid a premise as any other series. I wasnât especially excited about the high concept, but Iâve always maintained that execution is much more important than format. So I was really looking forward to see what your team would do. I played both routes, even though Iâm not attracted to men, because I wanted a fuller picture of the lore. Despite wanting to love sweet enchantments, Iâve found its institutional problems to be too severe. As a survey inherently invites critical engagement, I hope you can keep an open mind to examining these problems.
Sweet enchantments was a strange kind of cognitive dissonance. Itâs played as a light hearted cafĂ© drama, but every element reads as a horror story. And not just because of the customer service work, or the kidnapping. Its implications about race and relationship dynamics were frightening. The lovestruck team has shown that they care deeply about respecting issues of race, sexuality and gender, class, and trauma, so Iâm assuming a level of base knowledge here. You know how deeply fiction interacts with life. Itâs understood.
To start, Lucienâs route is fun, but the magical alternate world where racism as we know it might not exist isnât an excuse for how heâs treated as a character of color in our world. His first cg is massively whitewashed, and while the others are better theyâre not great. In that first cg he looks vaguely tan, not like the dark skinned black man that he is. Lightening a characterâs skin this way is not only unprofessional as an artist, but also as a habit comes from racist norms.
You need to have a sit-down conversation with your artists about drawing people of color. Because while Lucien is the worst whitewashed, heâs not the first. We were all socialized with white beauty standards, but thatâs not an excuse to persist with these norms. Itâs a demand to resist them. To put it simply, prioritizing light skin and white European features is bad, even if itâs what weâve been taught. Artists have the ability to look at reference material, to study what they donât know about brown skin. Art is created. Everything that is done is done intentionally. Palette, filter, and lighting are all generated by the artist, and they donât exist in actual space. This is not a case of bright lighting. The lighting isnât real. Even if it were, thatâs not how bright light looks on brown skin. The perceived value is just too far from the local value.
Hereâs a video on rendering black skin-( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALIBrFzIQ8s)The dudeâs clearly a little awkward talking about it, but itâs sweet and technically sound. For more on how lighting black skin works in real space, mic.com has an article called âkeeping insecure lit:cinematographer Ava Berkofsky on properly lighting black facesâ
Runaâs problems are more in the narrative. Many of the lovestruck routes Iâve read are excellent about respecting consent. Itâs even been the focus of multiple narratives. So I was surprised by the active use of charm magic here. Please put a pin in this thought- itâs important to pay attention to real life allegories for narrative elements. They will always read as intentional connections. In this case, charm magic jumped out immediately to me as a consent issue. Please at this point jump to planned parenthoodâs FRIES- consent must be freely given, reversible, informed, enthusiastic, and specific. By these standards consent cannot exist under charm magic, the same way it cannot exist in any other impaired state of mind. I know this thought wasnât in any of the producerâs minds, but Runaâs charm magic has the ability to be a magical allegory for a date rape drug. This was a risky choice considering the predatory lesbian stereotype, but I assumed the route would work around it. Unfortunately, her last batch of episodes revealed that she has used her charm magic. Her action on Kamila, to magically intoxicate and coerce her into a relationship that quite probably included sex, is an act of sexual assault. For what itâs worth, Kamila coercing the mc into a kiss is sexual assault as well, and was incredibly unwise to inflict on the players, who have their own traumas. I urge you to not go any further with this route. Oversight that it may have been, Runa is a sex offender. Lovestruck canât encourage forming any kind of relationship with a rapist.
Individual routes aside, the premise of sweet enchantments has its issues. The choice to set the cafĂ© as a prison was tone deaf. Particularly troubling is the fact that this prison is mostly inhabited by people of color. The American prison system grew out of slavery and to this day exploits the free labor of black people in particular, and brown people at large. If you need a short introduction, Jaron Browne has an article called âRooted in Slavery: Prison Labor Exploitationâ. There is at most one white prisoner in sweet enchantments- Iâm not clear on Romanâs race. To have the cafĂ© set up as the free labor of these prisoners of color, and then on top of that introduce a white mc to save them from their past, is incredibly concerning. Glorifying white crime wouldnât have been good either, but thatâs where we get into the complexity of the penal system being too much. Thereâs no good way to do this plot.
The penal system is not a light subject. Once again, real world allegories matter- no matter what you do, this is not a new prison system that youâre making up. It will always run in parallel to real life. And prison in America, the country youâre based in, is a corrupt, politically complex, broken, racist system that you canât hope to create media about with the kind of levity this series is curating. You do not have time to talk about privatized prison, or the school to prison pipeline. Watching orange is the new black is not sufficient research. Nodding to mass incarceration is not effective social commentary. I donât mean to say that you canât address the penal system. Lovestruck has handled a lot of complex heavy themes. But the light hearted tone and surface level treatment sweet enchantments is coming at it with canât do the topic justice.
Also, I realize magical racism is a well-trodden road, but that doesnât make it good. The prohibition of human/magician relationships in particular hit me hard. The real life equivalent here is anti-miscegenation laws. In my own life, these laws were why my grandparents had to leave the state to get married. These issues have not yet been rendered purely historical. Theyâre recent, and present in the minds of the public. Real life allegories matter. You canât have a plot about races not being able to legally marry without invoking real life eugenics and institutional racism. This is another story that could theoretically be done, but never as a fun, quirky subplot as I fear it is in sweet enchantments.
Someone had the forethought to make Liora the warden and I appreciate that. I appreciate that there are so many poc characters in this series, and Iâm really hopeful that thatâs the norm going forward, which seems likely considering other recent series. Lovestruck is still miles ahead of many other stories. But effective representation requires consideration of the charactersâ identities. In this case, not fully considering the implications of the forms of representation in sweet enchantments created some huge misunderstandings and upsetting themes. Diversity without thought is better than no diversity, but still less than true inclusion. Itâs a bigger question than percentages. The other day I heard Dr. Dafina-Lazarus Stewart speak, and thereâs something they said that I think explains it well. To paraphrase- diversity asks who sits at the table. But inclusion needs to ask, whose seat at that table is in danger? Whose ideas are considered? Who is made to feel that they belong?
Originally, I was going to write this response focusing on ways that sweet enchantments can improve. Lovestruck has yet to actually drop a pilot series, so it seemed like the most efficient option. And in my initial impressions there were several nice things about sweet enchantments that could stand to be played up- the patisserie in Lucienâs route is lovely and well researched, and the plot of overcoming the food critic is fun. Nothing in Runaâs route was super appealing to me, but I appreciated the niche her character would fill. Female characters should be able to have a wide range of personalities, including abrasive ones. But these are little consolation in the face of its larger problems. Sweet enchantment is a minefield of sensitive issues that deserve respect, care, and time that you canât give to make it even acceptable. While I recognize youâve already invested time and resources in the series, it needs to be dropped. If you canât drop this pilot, then thereâs no pilot you can. Â
#sweet enchantments#this is the third time I've posted this trying to get the read more right so if it doesn't work sorry but I have a real essay to write#hoo boy we out here#yknow

This article was written based on Ungagged 2017 presentation given by Hannah Thorpe, you can view the full slides here. Originally posted on white.net Todayâs digital market is continually changing so itâs imperative to adapt the day-to-day running of your business accordingly for optimum efficiency. For example, machine learning. Googleâs algorithms use data and statistics to learn on their own to understand exactly what users want when browsing the web. Similarly, personalisation is a key part of creating businesses which engage with their core target audiences. On top of this, businesses have to enter the world of automation as manually intensive tasks take a back seat. Why manually send out ten tweets a day when you can do so in a fraction of the time with automated social media posts across multiple platforms? Some may say this is an information overload and that is where SEO expertise comes in. When should you invest more in SEO? There is always a time to invest more in SEO practices. Whether youâre seeing a stagnant performance, rapid growth or a steady decline, each stage can he helped through good SEO. But at the same time, depending on the business goals, how much should you invest and when? For example, you may want to invest in stagnant performance because you would like the opportunity to fast-track to rapid growth, but at this stage, you have lower revenue and cash flow. Itâs about being smart with your money and investing a feasible amount during a time it will be most effective. The timescale of SEOâs impact is unpredictable SEO takes time to see results so in many cases it is seen as a gamble. But you may well have insights which can speed up the process. Have you had time working on the site? Do you have competitor knowledge? Experience in SEO? Historic data? The people investing in SEO often have more actionable skills than they may have initially realised. So, weâre not exactly sure when the SEO will have its impact but we still need a maximum return for minimum effort. Itâs at this stage, investors need to be savvy and think very hard about investing money effectively, having the team to do the job and finding those time savers. Invest money effectively The 3X Rule is an ideal way to have a template of how much to invest and where. As a rule of thumb, employees should be delivering three times more deliverable work than their salary. The best way to measure this is monthly salary versus how many hours and the price of billable work. So, first off, invest in technology. You have your team of humans, now let the technology do its bit too. Before investing, ask yourself some questions. Does the technology save you time across multiple clients? Are there multiple uses? Does it provide better or more accurate data than you already have? Does it free up your teamâs headspace for other tasks? Stop doing the tasks you hate Most of us have a slight ego and we may think we can do everything efficiently and to a high standard. This may be true for some, but for a large majority, we need to stop doing tasks we always procrastinate on, or hate, and give them to someone else to fly through them. There are also a few âdonât dosâ, which could be really be affecting the speed of your businessâ output. Stop cold calling for new businesses, instead outsource to a sales team. Donât manually finding outreach targets or email addresses for link building campaigns â use tools that have thousands of contacts ready to be exported in one list. Planning your budgets by week, month and year is imperative for understanding where money can be invested and where money need to be saved, including your FUF.  Itâs time to save time If you find yourself constantly trying to save money then spending too much time on the running of the business and the day-to-day tasks may be the businessâ problem. Finding time savers from a project management and technical delivery side is imperative for maximum efficiency. From the managing director, straight through to the digital marketing intern, organising your daily and weekly tasks creates a well-oiled machine. It breaks up long periods of work into manageable chunks with the satisfaction of ticking off completed tasks. In addition to this, we earlier touched on automation. Using tools like Content King to notify of website issues will save you time on manually auditing a site. And when it comes to the day-to-day deliverable work, creating templates for your keyword researches, competitor analysises and reports significantly reduces the time spent on these deliverables. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail Apologies for the clichĂ© section heading, but itâs really true. Without any well-thought-out preparation, 4-hour tasks become six hours, eight becomes twelve because too much time is spent on figuring out how to execute the task rather than actually executing it. Tools like Monday.com let you set out tasks for each of your employees with deadline dates and billable hour information, while comments can be added and statuses can be updated. This helps management hand out the correct number of billable hours per client and gives the whole team clarity on the status of each deliverable. Processes you need There are certain aspects of running the business that has to be well thought out. Getting to know the clients with client onboarding, allowing time to make sales and bring in new business, giving enough time to deliver all work, being there to handle any complaints, give your employees 1-2-1s to monitor their progress and feelings, and finally marketing the business itself. All need to be dovetailed into the everyday running of the business. Avoid any unnecessary time-draining tasks. Little Warden and Content King give you regular alerts on a websiteâs status from a content and technical SEO standpoint, so long-winded manual checks are not needed. Use templates for everything, from deliverable work to onboarding meetings with clients. Need an answer to something? Use Ask Wonder â donât spend thirty minutes scanning Google or asking colleagues. You have a great content marketing strategy, but simply not enough time to do it, donât overwork and produce low-quality content, instead, outsource. Upwork is a reliable freelance tool with a huge database of highly-qualified copywriters looking for work. Get a helping hand from tools Stylifyme.com matches the colour tone of a website and gives you the colour code to embed in future creative assets. This is brilliant for infographics to suit your clientâs brand style. Similarly, Xtensio Persona Builder allows you to build a persona for the core audience group of a business. It allows the team to be consistent when producing visual work for a client. Datamining is another excellent way to improve time efficiency. When doing a site search on a particular (a forum, for example), instead of manually dragging in all the URLs and title tags, you can easily pull them all together in one excel export. Employ the right people For maximum return, you need it to be the right peopleâs time. A business simply doesnât work unless you have a balanced combination of personality types. The four most common types are the playfuls, the powerfuls, the peacefuls and the precises. Essentially, if you had too many of one group, the working dynamics wouldnât work. How people interact within a business is just as important as who the people are. Away from the regular chatter, which is great for morale, most confrontations often have a pattern. You can either be an adult (the rational figure), a persecutor (âitâs all your faultâ), a rescuer (âlet me help youâ) or a victim (âpoor meâ). The latter three make up the drama triangle which the team can work on avoiding for a better environment. How to attract candidates Give your businessâ audience pre-warning before putting out a job offer â âweâll soon be looking for a new SEO specialist, watch this spaceâ. Get people excited. Then once itâs ready to advertise, write a blog, include the job specs, then advertise on social media. Have a thought process behind marketing your vacant spot â you are in marketing after all. Make sure the benefits of the role are clear and obvious (professional coaching, training, additional holiday etc). Use tools like Textio to make sure every letter and grammatical mark are perfect in the job description. Finally, the screening process (if youâre not using a recruiter). Ask your team to do the first review of CVs, use Grammarly to check all CVs and cover letters are up to scratch, request cover letters answering a specific question to see how someone makes a decision, and hold an initial call with all the candidates before progressing to face to face interviews. Key takeaways So thatâs it. How to scale your SEO business. Here are six of the main takeaways:  The post SCALING SEO SERVICES appeared first on FOUND.

twitter blues
This is bad faith writ large, on the societal scale. Everyone is always guilty, and each of us is both warden and prisoner. Activism is both chronically necessary and fatally impotent. Politics, and political analysis, thus become a prison of permanent neurosis. Foucault occasionally makes vague gestures toward âthe possibility of a new form of rightâ and âthe possibility of constituting a new politics of truth,â but gives no indication of how we could meaningfully escape the oppressive wheel on which we, as obedient punched-out robot hamsters, are currently stuck.
#JeNeSuisPasLiberal: Entering the Quagmire of Online Leftism | The American Reader
Iâve been growing more frustrated of late with the experience of Twitter as a site of political discourse. I make no pretensions to activism, or even to discussion per se, but I like to keep myself informed and to contribute to the spread of new ideas. But increasingly I find it hard to look past the tone of what is being said: the relentless, bitter cynicism that ascribes little or no âgood faithâ to those with opposing views, and that seems to take joy in attacking others. No doubt it is, in part, the pull of the medium - the temptation to post a short, acerbic comment and the disinclination to do much else.Â
Personally I date this to when Corbyn became leader of the UK Labour Party - not because Iâm totally engrossed in British politics (though I do follow it pretty closely) but because it was when a certain kind of rhetoric seeped across to the Irish part of my feed. Itâs not so much about the substantive differences, though I consider myself a social democratic realist with an inclination towards radical theory: itâs the way you act towards people who donât share your views. Nor is it one-sided: there has always been plenty of condescension towards the radical left on the part of the more âestablishmentâ or moderate currents, just as the radical left builds up its identity in opposition to what it sees as craven compromisers, since at least the time of the Revisionist Controversy.
What feels different now, and in the context of a general Anglospheric clusterfuck of societal polarisation and âpost-truthâ politics, is that we increasingly choose to get our information thrown at us with minimal nuance and maximal emotion (or since thatâs a tricky one, letâs say ârhetoricâ, though it is not unproblematic either). I found myself abstaining from my Twitter feed on my morning commute, because it simply didnât put me in a very good mood, at least before I started selectively muting people. At the same there is a guilt because often theyâre expressing ideas I donât fundamentally disagree with, only that I would offer qualifications - if I felt I could, in the space and context allowed, and with the tact and sympathy I can provide - and in any case, do I really need to? Often these are serious political issues that social media discussion is largely irrelevant to - except, that is, in the sense of shaping the broader attitudes and assumptions on them.Â
So really, why worry? Is it because I wish that political discourse could be handled in a more compassionate way, because I genuinely believe that is the way peopleâs minds can be changed, or is it simply an egotistical reaction to the way others express themselves more forthrightly? A bit of both, I suppose, though part of the latter is that I wish I could better express myself about the former. Someone I have enjoyed following on Twitter lately is the writer David Auerbach, a sort of well-read polymath who delves into politics, philosophy, culture and computer programming. He also takes aim at the âSocial Justiceâ phenomenon in a way that, while critical, is more considered than the usual reflexive attacks; in this article, he lays out a whole taxonomy of approaches to contemporary political discussion. The criticism of Foucault - or more specifically, the Anglocentric reading of his work on âbiopoliticsâ - is warranted (Iâll admit to not yet having read in full Habermasâ critique that he quotes) though I still hold out hope that there is a way of expanding his later work on ethics, truth and subjectivity that aids our current problems.

Pewitâs Free-For-All
https://ift.tt/2KW7PCa
Bike riding, cliff diving, fence jumping, and rope climbing are just some of the popular activities at Pewitâs Nest State Natural Area. None of these activities are sanctioned by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources of course, but without enforcement, there are simply no rules.
I began to put together this post to share with you a few images of âPhase 1â of the DNRâs upgrades at Pewitâs Nest SNA just outside of Baraboo. (Basically, a fence.) The issue, as the locals know, is that the natural area is simply too popular for its own health. While many visitors do their best to respect the property, many do not. The unique sandstone gorge has become an overcrowded, âInstagramableâ swimming hole. For its part, the DNR seems to be trying to manage the property in a way where they can avoid using volunteer staff, rangers, wardens, or cameras. The result is essentially putting up a costly fence for people to climb over.
Climbing over the new fence at Pewitâs Nest SNAFirstly, letâs deal with a couple common arguments for abusing the SNA right now; Itâs not OK today because âback in the dayâ some locals used to cliff jump at âPeeweesâ. Wrong. That was then. Itâs a whole different world today. In 1965 a few teens jumping off of the cliffs didnât destroy large swaths of plant life, erode the sandstone or chase out the wildlife. Weâre not talking about a âfew kidsâ in 2018. Itâs volume folks! Second, âRisk-taking is OK!â. What? Itâs not about letting people take risks. Go ahead, Iâm all for adventure and risk-taking. You can defend ârisk-takingâ all day, but youâre not even close to the issue. The issue is that Pewitâs Nest is a state natural area designed to protect the fragile environmental space. Thatâs the whole purpose in its existence as state property. It was not purchased by the state to be a swimming hole or recreation area. Pewitâs Nest is a State Natural Area. This is an important point. Only a very limited amount of land in our area is protected, most land is owned, fenced, plowed or paved by someone. A State Natural Area is a tiny speck of land where nature is intended to be protected. It is not a park, playground or swimming hole. It is a natural preserve intended for conservation and scientific study. The public is invited to explore it, but not trash it.
Cliff Diving
With that understood, then we have to jump to the next issue. It is the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources responsibility to protect this area in a healthy state. That means that while visitors can explore and enjoy the area, itâs up to the DNR to make sure that public use does not put the environment at risk. This is where they are failing. And spectacularly failing I might add. Until the folks in charge show some respect for their mission and our community, they will continue to avoid real solutions at all cost. Real solutions, of course, mean a mix of education and law enforcement that includes âFeet on the Groundâ. I totally realize that there are many DNR folks who get this, but they need their leadership to give them some useful support. A fence without education and enforcement is just a waste of wood.
Rock Stacking at Pewitâs Nest
Right now, education at Pewitâs Nest is being managed by Instagram and the cliff divers themselves. Constant promotion through social media and YouTube are selling one story, âSwimming Holeâ. The DNR, on the other hand, canât get a handle on any sort of useful public messaging where it counts. Their best possible solution today is to support educational volunteers placed at Pewitâs (AND Parfreyâs Glen for that matter!) during peak weekend days and occasional summer weekdays. Volunteers would simply share information about the area and how it is intended to be used. Sure, the volunteers should have the ability to call a warden IF there is an issue, but really, most visitors would do the right thing if they knew what the right thing was. Heck, most people have no idea that Pewitâs isnât a swim park when they arrive here. They learned everything they know about it online and NOT from the DNR.
Notice the orange climbing rope behind the photo takers
So let me wrap this up. These photos were all taken on âquietâ Monday, not a busy summer weekend. Most visitors are learning about the new fence right there on the spot. What they are learning is often from other visitors standing beside them. Most of those dudes are talking about how sad it is that there is a fence and what a cool place to swim, cliff dive and party it is. Then after a little hesitation, they just climb over the fence for a selfie and a swim. Like everyone else.

Taking care of Our own Guns is not the Option to Head out
Taking care of Our own Guns is not the Option to Head out
United states has recently observed numerous capturing in addition to indiscriminate discharge happenings with universities, malls, together with villages. These perpetrators were definitely either detained or possibly killed. A few took ones own life previous to law enforcement may even respond in the scene. All things considered, North america will keep the loss of young boys and girls, academics, bros, plus sisters. The particular inhabitants are smaller, ths issue persists. By using every single one of taking sprees pending previously u.s . much like the Ghastly Reaper, is without a doubt marker command what exactly we really need? Or even its possible a lot more major problem weâre also looking right here?
Research has revealed of which 31% from majority shootings transpire in the Joined States. You need to, in the event that weapons werenât banned in the most advises? Found in Queensland around 1996, 35 men and women past away each time a individual willy-nilly golf shot them. In your melee, 23 were being wounded. It motivated all the Aussie federal government to trust in addition to put into practice stern principles pertaining to accelerator pedal use. Hence, the amount of volume killings in the Stretch of land Downwards Within has been reduced, if not utterly eradicated.
You will discover politicians throughout United states of america exactly who help support tougher accelerator pedal manage, just like Barack Obama together with Hillary Clinton. Both of these products acknowledged Quarterly report for the reason that design meant for exacting gas laws. This intention is sweet, although now you ask ,, as to why hasnât all the US fed government at some point integrated weapon manipulate?
Most people contend they will need to have guns since they apply it for self-defense. Some people acquire a drivers license correctly, and as such, these are anticipated to utilise their particular tools if only your need arises. Criminals, hostage destruction, along with other types vehemence need to have people to stand not to mention battle, preferably utilizing their equipment for choice. Working life is irreplaceable, they assert, and they are simply offer protection to most of the activities should they have the proper equipment. It truly is helpful to notice, then again, who understandably relatively bright handle marker apply, you can get individuals rise above the particular set in place perimeters.
Inebriated guys continue, abuse their voice outside, cursing a heavens pertaining to what you seem to be anguish, and could out of the blue vent out apart their worries recommended to their neighbors. It is possible to mention 1 are not able to get rid of someone, a treadmill will usually start using a rifle as long as needed. In case alcoholic, medicines, or perhaps thought unstableness, or maybe furiousness gets control, that creases relating to perfect as well as inappropriate fade. Persons ignore his or herâs oath. Many forget about theyâve already friend who have carried out nothing wrong to assist you to them. Just about all many give thought to is the desire to shoot a fabulous gun.
Owning a accelerator is a huge responsibility. Requires over fine self-control in order to coerce consumers that youâd not necessarily use them for anything more other than self-defense. Those people youths what person massacred 50 percent of a school had been daughters and then daughters. They will just werenât violent. These people were typically the reliable model, and in all likelihood people corresponding his or herâs father and mother they will not necessarily reach any specific weapon. Although, event tables transform whenever you minimum assume it.
Is pistol management the solution? Yes !, The country need to step-up plus take into account looking at typically the regulations concerning marker censor found in each one state. Simply no declare ought to be totally different from another. Simply no disposition must personally own the gun used just for caprice. Everyone should become susceptible to tough rules. And yet more than purely the laws, provide work out discipline. Adults and children equally must be schooled regarding the results with weapon banning, and / or everything that can potentially transpire when a rifle control laws doesnât necessarily be found within a country. It could take a little while if anyone is to accept many of these law, particularly those fishing along with ammunition enthusiasts. You can easlily all bring options to assist you to be responsible with company and prodding people to shop for only they do business with pistols with their distinct duty. We need guys to shield people, nonetheless you also need to look after our lives out of ourselves.
To be a child regarding a personal game warden and even a little kid around the distant the southern area of portions of Tn, Iâve got constantly tried weapons the overall life. You will find a well known policy which is tightly related to firearm manage, ânone are equipped with poor guns, only poor menâ (Squires, 2002). Setting laws for firearms appears to have been most significant politics matters in but not just United states nevertheless various other states when well. Gun during United states of america support $24 thousand your financial system, as a result, a number of us can tell in which pistols have fun a big factor in your U.S. Plenty of people consider applying weapon rules and additionally restrictions looks like extra on the problem as compared with a benefit to our area, considering marker regulate contains failed throughout websites like Ireland in europe and also the Joined Kingdom. Customers believe that accelerator control will certainly lead to a lot fewer offenses, however, this isnât the gun once more that would be committing the particular criminal, quite, it does not take uncontrollable individuals exactly who misuse the use, legal guidelines, in addition to protection under the law in having all the firearms. Only a few People in the usa practice these rifle community; of those who conduct maintain guns, had been prefer to use them for felonious reasons. For example, quite a few locals achieve even if itâs just desire owning guns, when mainly unique company with regard to sports usages such as looking or maybe capturing competitions. Burglars have weapons with trafficking, which unfortunately is how dealers against the law sell off rifles to be able to people who are not able to select these products in stores (Parnell, 2009). In which becoming the way it is, banning rifles will not have an impression with criminals. The ability to go through life, that is definitely suggested inside the Following Amendment, is equally as fundamental every similar amendment as well as ought not to be revised. This will almost always be a main social dilemma through The nation, yet recognition are generally produced about the risk about controlling much of our guns.
Plenty of people strive in order to the actual Usa Affirms to other countries while deliberating with regards to accelerator rights. One of these will be Ireland in europe which inturn has brought a large number of hard to follow weapon law regulations and additionally regulations. Ireland in europe going employing gas pedal handle protocols in early seventies (Library, 1981). Just before gun policies are planned, a pistol murders slept continuous within Ireland in europe, although the moment law handed a new prohibition concerning markers, any slay deals enhanced as well as have slept at the elevated position for the pole when compared with previous to gas regulations. In a similar fashion, inside the Joined Realm, bans regarding markers were definitely put into position setting up on 1996. Once the prohibit, any rifle homicide estimates peaked after which you can seems to have slowly and gradually begun to tumble, nevertheless, a marker tough levels contain continue to for no reason fell beneath what the heck is was before the ban. This really major during verifying that may getting rid of weapons as well as a great deal limiting them does not have particular favourable influence on limiting wrongdoing not to mention violence. Since possessing tighter pistol legal guidelines can not work, persons ought not to jumble to enjoy this type of laws immediately following each and every taking pictures who can get taught in media. Any media channels has been utilized to assist you to incredibly promote whatever kind of gas fierceness, which includes distorted lots of peoples displays with regards to pistols and in addition resulted in the strength of a number of reportsâarguments to set some sort of banning concerning guns. Any time health systems from other sorts of states which include Eire as well as the Joined Land, add more weapon influence legal guidelines, theyâre only disarmament the actual law-abiding citizens, throughout which tend to be defenseless in opposition to criminals. The actual United Declares cannot carry out this specific very same route mainly because not any benefit is going to arrive from it. By just manâs instinct, most people will never be ready to conclude war on affright in addition to arrive at any amazing state. Burglars really are a community nowadays, as well as of which party, the section of oneâs criminal acts fully commited happen to be violent. One inch eight criminal activity entirely commited entails who are suffering firearm. Most of us pay out a lot of precious time debating gas pedal regulate, any time guarantees, itâll have no impact on our society.
Given that the start of The country, settlers used company to help you look for online game mainly because an origin associated with food and in addition being a mean with cover on pet predators together with Native Americans. Given that you provide an elegant the world necessity for fishing plus the having weapons includes turned down (Spitzer, 1998). Info typically the downfall, that in search of undomesticated gameplay for the reason that an activity nonetheless live through and in the present day, concerning 7 proportion oneâs usa groups independently like hunters. Any folk who seem to assist markers and even partake in finest seem to be largely bright white men of all ages living for to the south rural regions (Spitzer, 1998). Searcher are actually controlled enough. The united states has got observed a Brady law, that most of us every time a criminal history check important for who want to purchase a firearm. The legal requirement seems to have certainly no appearance upon us as well as the NRA is wanting for you to deteriorate the particular impact in legislation on a state level (Worsnop, 1994). Another sort of limitations comprise many version of guysâhunters can make use of then when and then where they will should shoot. Whenever from submiting all of the pistols which will searcher or other occupants managed might closure force and criminal activity, the vast majority of would probably perform so. By looking into making this having gun banned pertaining to law-abiding searchers and then people, would most likely withdraw peoples strategy of self-defense, in which we, this law-abiding, will at the mercy of this lawless.
This U.S. Metabolism is written and published to make certain this usa includes certain paths so the nation continues whole. Having differences on the Organization will only slow down our country. With his Assert from the Institute language, Director Clinton summoned a gun society to support your ex boyfriend by means of resolving however, the problem about red crime. In place of rifles staying recinded to minimize crime, your Usa Declares should think about that other methods to make sure you dissuade crime. The duty the actual of this governing is usually to hold buy, which is why each of our Institution Fathers written that Metabolic rate (Spitzer, 1998). The belief that everyone on The united states shouldâve the authority to endure fingers to secure a proper rights associated with inhabitants, which has been incorporated into many of our Metabolism, originated in NiccolĂČ Machiavelli who had been your Italian Philosopher, Speech political leader Algernon Sidney, and a Uk thinker John Harrington (Charles, 2015). It is stated from the Minute Amendment, âA fabulous well-regulated Militia currently being vital to the security of an Free Think, the perfect of those to continue and also tolerate Arms, will,no doubt not infringed.â Some of those for accelerator manage not to mention control indicates that 2nd perhaps the Amendment suggests âYour well-regulated Militiaâ, plus conisder that firearms ought to basically possibly be pressed by way of military workers or simply police induce (Charles, 2015). They claim which usually rifles bring about wildness and then locals probably should not include handguns or perhaps infiltration rifles. Anti-gun manipulate encourages are convinced that the particular Secondly Amendment helps to protect man or women rights, similarly to any First of all Amendment of which safeguards 100 % free speech. That i concur in the anti-gun manage is in favor of and donât believe revising a 2nd Amendment could reduce criminal offense within North america as it would be definitely not markers that creates physical violence, but instead the folks associated with them. Rescue Dogs
Dogs are loyal companions and become part of the family. Where do you go when you are looking for dog? You could go to a breeder, get one from someone local having puppies, a pet store, a shelter or rescue. Pet stores are not as popular as they once were due to the public finding out that many of the dogs come from puppy mills. Puppy mills are facilities that keep cage on top of cage of dogs that are bred over and over until they cannot produce anymore. Unfortunately, many of these facilities do not care about anything but the profit and keep the dogs in inhumane conditions. Many dogs lack medical care, are sickly, malnourished, and many die there. Loopholes in laws perpetuate the continuation of breeding facilities. In Ohio and other states, some Amish communities are also building a bad reputation for breeding dogs in deplorable conditions. Shelters had a stigma of just having the unwanted dogs but many have taken great strides into being more in touch with the public and to showcase their great dogs on social media. Rescues are another great way to find your family pet.
About 6 to 8 million cats and dogs end up in shelters in the United States according to the Humane Society of the United States. About 1.2 million dogs are euthanized every year. In a 2012 article in The Columbus Dispatch, the number of dogs in Ohioâs county-run shelters is more than 100,000 annually. âThe statewide average showed that 70 percent of the dogs were redeemed or adopted, and 30âpercent were euthanized.â But âThe euthanasia rates at individual county shelters varied tremendously. Some dog wardens cautioned that it is difficult to compare urban and rural dog shelters because they take in vastly different numbers and types of dogs.â For example, âLawrence County in southeastern Ohio euthanized 81 percent of its shelter dogs last year, by far the highest rate in the state. Carroll County in northeastern Ohio destroyed 1 percent, the lowest rate.â
So why do dogs end up in shelters and rescues?
The number one reason dogs end up in shelters is sheer overpopulation. There are more dogs than responsible families able to have dogs. Many people choose not to spay and neuter their pets. Then they either purposely breed then or negligently let them wander, which leads to additional breeding. The term âback-yard breederâ is someone who purposely breeds a litter to try and make money off the puppies without properly taking care of the dogs and not doing any of the genetic testing. Genetic testing is very important for diseases that plague dogs. You will hear people complain about how much a puppy costs initially but they donât take into account the heath cost over the lifetime of the puppy. Back-yard breeding is what we are seeing with the overabundance of Pit Bull type dogs. Furthermore, people who breed Pits for fighting only further exacerbate the overpopulation epidemic. Pit bull type dogs have the highest euthanasia rate at 93%, as reported by a 2014 article by OneGreenPlanet.org.
Another main reason dogs end up homeless is that many people do not do their research. They do not consider that getting a pet is a commitment for the lifetime of that animal and also what goes into caring for an animal. There is a monetary cost for care and time for training and exercise. Too many give up when their companion becomes too much work, inconvenient, or needs surgery/has a serious medical condition.
Other common reasons are lack of training, improper/fear-based training, lifestyle changes, moving, new baby, allergies, health issues, biting, having too many other animals, or sometimes the owner passes away and there is no one else who can care for the dog.
Stray and unwanted dogs may end up finding a home, but the majority of them end up in shelters and rescues. An animal control facility is necessary for the surrounding communities and can be run by a city or county. This facility is in place for stray or at large animals to reduce disease, overpopulation, and bites. They have animal control officers who help pick up animals and if they are lucky, they also have Veterinary staff. Funding is always a concern and some places have more than others. Some shelters, such as Akronâs own One of Kind Pets, is a privately funded facility. Humane Societies typically take in abandoned or abuse cases. And then there are rescues. Most rescues are run by a group of dedicated volunteers. Rescues can general or breed-specific. For instance, Paws and Prayers is an Akron based rescue that takes dogs and cats in need. Others like Greyhound Adoption of Ohio (GAO) are a breed-specific dog rescue. They get many dogs from the Greyhound tracks that can no longer compete. There are some very small rescue organizations where there are only a couple people doing what they can. There is even The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs catering to the older dog population. So why are there so many different places? Itâs the same answerâŠthere really are this many animals in need of proper homes. Sometimes owners face legitimate issues and really have exhausted every resource, but many times people just dump the animal. They want to take it somewhere and be done. They donât want to try and find a good home, try different training techniques or adjust their schedules.
If you are re-homing a dog, please be aware of unscrupulous people. In Akron there have been a number of incidents where someone will steal someoneâs dog and then sell it to someone else who doesnât know the dog was stolen. Sometimes the dog is stolen out of the yard or they work in teams while one person distracts you as the other steals your dog. Another, even worse fate for your dog, is that people pretending to be a great home take your dog and then use it for bait in Pit Bull fighting. Which is one more reason among many for harsher penalties for dog fighting.
What is wrong with the dogs?
There is a very common misconception that the dogs in shelters all have problems. Some do have some behavioral issues due to the original owners doing no training at all but most of these dogs can be re-trained. And positive reinforcement training is a great way to bond with your new companion. Some of the dogs do have some health issues. Again, if vaccinations and regular Vet care was done in their first place, many health issues would have been taken care of. A common example is heartworm disease. Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitos and by keeping your dog on heartworm preventative they do not get the disease. If someone doesnât want to spend the money on the preventative, the dog can get heartworm, which is 100% fatal if untreated. It is also much more expensive to treat so some shelters do not have the funds to treat heartworm and the dogs might be euthanized. But more shelters are trying to treat heartworm positive dogs and find them homes.
Some people worry about serious health issues after they adopt a dog but that can happen no matter where you get a dog. Even routine care is going to cost money so you have be prepared to take care of your family pet. Some people worry about not knowing the background of a dog but sometimes the facility/rescue knows some or all of the background. Sometimes people want a certain breed of dog. 25% of dogs in shelters are purebreds and there are many breed-specific rescues. Small dogs and puppies get adopted the quickest in shelters. Some people canât handle larger breeds or are renting with size restrictions on dogs.  Most dogs are just happy to have a second chance at having a loving home.
With shelters you donât always see the dogâs true personality since it is in such a harsh environment. Most rescues do foster homes and then they can get a better read on the dogâs temperament and personality to better match the right dog with the right family. Most shelters donât have the resources to do that.
What challenges shelters and rescues face
Money is the biggest issue for shelters and rescues. Budgets only go so far in shelters and they have a lot of expenses. And in rescues and shelters that are privately run, itâs even more challenging. The largest expense is typically health care. Often you hear people complain about the adoption fees but realistically, the health care shelters and rescues put into that dog is usually much higher than the adoption fee.
Rescues and shelters often have a âwish listâ of supplies to help them help the animals. Not everyone can donate money but you can donate blankets, towels, cleaning supplies. Every place is a little different on what they can accept so make sure to check first. Another way to help is to donate your time. Volunteering is a great way to help out. Rescues always need volunteers and many shelters really can use help too. It can mean the difference of a dog getting some quality outside time and a chance to show their real personality.
What to expect when adopting from a shelter or rescue.
When an Animal Control officer brings a dog into a shelter, there is a 3-day hold before the dog is put up for adoption or euthanized. If the pet got loose this gives the owners time to find their pet and reclaim them. When you adopt from a shelter you can many times take the dog home that day. Shelters do not have the resources to screen applicants. There are also a pretty high number of return dogs coming back to shelter if things donât work out. When going through a private shelter or rescue, there is a more lengthy process. When adopting from a rescue, there can be an initial application, a phone interview, a home visit, and calls to your Vet if you have current pets. Do not be discouraged about it taking longer if choosing a rescue. They do all this (almost always on their own personal time) to match the right family with the right dog. Yes, they are going to be more particular who is able to adopt through them too, but there is a significantly smaller amount of return dogs this way. Also, usually the dogs from a rescue are in foster homes. The foster home can get a better idea of the dogâs temperament and personality. In a shelter a dog may act aggressive or scared just by being in a cage. Not all rescues do everything exactly the same either.
Also in The Columbus Dispatch article, Ohio shelters vary in how they are operated and how they facilitate which dogs are âadoptableâ or should be saved. One important thing their research showed was that, âHow well a shelter performs in saving the most dogs reflects the outlook and philosophy of the individual dog warden, Granito said. The best ones promote adoption, welcome volunteers and visitors into their shelters, and work with rescue groups, thereby reducing euthanasia rates, he said.â  One local example of this is how Summit County Animal Control works with Pay it Forward Pets who come in weekly to take photos of the new incomers and promote them on the SCAC facebook page.
Please consider saving the life of a shelter or rescue dog. When you open your home and heart to a homeless dog, you are saving two livesâŠthat dog and the one who takes their place.
