Most of us know by this point that the Lupin III manga series doesn't particularly have the best reputation, but why is that?
Is it simply because of the content itself, or is there more behind it?
It is August 10th, the 56th anniversary of the og manga, and I will be exploring the causes of the manga's poor reputation in the Lupin community with as most detail as I can try to be.
Bluntly put, I will not hide the fact that the manga series as a whole contains extremely problematic elements. All three series, OG manga, New Adventures, and Shin Lupin III all contain instance of Lupin and other characters raping and sexually assaulting women.
It certainly gets better as the series goes on. At the last three major arcs of Shin Lupin III, Lupin becomes almost entirely sexless, with some instances of plain pervertedness. However, it is not an issue that cannot be glossed over and it is the by far biggest burden that this series has to carry over its 56 years of existence.
OG manga is the biggest culprit of this, barely two chapter goes by without an instance of Lupin pulling his sexual advances onto random women and succeeding. Those moments of the manga are extremely gross and uncomfortable- and it really makes our protagonist extremely unlikeable, which brings me to my next point:
The fact that the OG manga is the first of the three manga series contribute heavily to its poor reputation.
"Aiee!! No way that the biggest manga preacher in tumblr is slandering the manga! Isn't that out of character!?"
It quite is, luckily I can think. As someone who has spent about 5 months reviewing almost all of the chapters, I can say that I know quite a bit about what it does right and what it does wrong... and it sadly does many things wrong.
Of course, the main thing is the sexual violence, but it is also the series with the least interaction between each member of the Lupin gang, who are characters people already come to really like. Lacking that element takes away what many people regard to be the best part about the series.
The beginning chapters of the og manga are also poorly paced. A bunch of things are going on, and the panelling certainly makes it hard to follow as well.
And to even add to the original issue, the english translation provided by Tokyopop also fucked everything up too!! Many of the extreme dialogues that you come across, including ones that make jokes at Monkey Punch's expense, are done by Tokyopop. Tabbiewolf explains this much better than I can:
"Just remember: a LOT of the…more offensive stuff in the manga is from the TokyoPop translations. I’m not excusing ALL of it, mind you — it was the 1960s and this was an adventure/spy manga marketed at cisdudes, after all — but the script writer for the English version was extremely, uh, artistic, with his localization of the translation."
"it was the early 2000s, manga was trying to appeal specifically to people who didn’t read it: teenaged cisboys who watched South Park, basically ;) So a fair amount of the stuff was very much the new English script, NOT the creator ‘s original work! Some plots got changed entirely just because the Japanese slang from the time didn’t translate."
First impressions matter, and the OG manga makes a very bad impression for people attempting to get into the manga series. Many readers are most likely taken back by how different it is from what they are used to, and they are definitely not going to like the problematic elements.
Those who still try to give it second chances are going to be met with disappointment when they find out these glaring issues are only partially fixed further into the series. Believing that it won't get better, they end up dropping the manga altogether and generalizing the rest of the manga series as depraved nonsense.
And I can't simply blame Monkey Punch for all these issues!! It was the first of what's to come, and he was not aware at the time just how big Lupin III would become in Japan and eventually worldwide. The og manga is very experimental, and you can tell he was only trying to figure out what works. I also cannot blame the people that dislike the manga. People naturally dislike something that is problematic and different.
Heck, most manga fans feel indifferent about the og manga as well, with the majority of them liking Shin Lupin III much better.
I have the statistic right here!!! It's not a lot of people, but there's an obvious majority choice here.
(By the way, if you're enjoying reading this so far, you should totally join my Lupin III server ahem cough cough nudge nudge)
So not even the manga fans love the OG manga. In my opinion, I would definitely not recommend people to read that as their first Lupin manga either. It is the type of media that if you really love the source material in general, then it'd be ok to read.
It is quite a shame to say that the series that does a better job at getting people in the manga, is the third one of the bunch. Most people aren't going to know that however, and they end up reading something that is going to likely give a bad image of the manga.
Ok so I dont have a good segway to the second part of this post so have a panel.
Now I'm gonna talk about how the fandom itself screw up it's reputation!!
(Before you get further I have to say that I have nothing against anime fans, if I do sound like I don't like them it's just sort of poor wording on my end)
Many fans of Lupin III start with the anime, if not probably all of them at this point. This causes a huge skew in public opinion, where those who are pre-exposed to the anime are probably going to view the manga as something lesser than its animated counterpart.
This can be seen particularly in CloudConnection's video of his manga analysis, which is concerningly just a portion of this 18 minute video, but I'll look over that. The portions of the video where he analyzes the manga contain a large amount of negative opinions about it.
A lot of his points are very good, and a lot of them I agree with, like his issues with the rape and sexual assault and how its a good time capsule but definitely not something that people should start off with. But a rest of the points seem a bit unreasonable to make and rather biased, like how the characters feel inconsistent, the bad pacing, and really emphasizing how dark and grim the manga is (it is very goofy and nobody ever talks about that)
And I have to state- It's totally valid for someone to prefer one thing over the other, but my point is that when this opinion is overwhelmingly the majority, it is going to cause the general public's opinion to unfairly be against something, ignoring what it does good and pinning the focus on what it does bad.
That video example was very popular, and I know someone personally that got the wrong memo from it and hated the manga without reading it for a long time, so you can see how it can probably effect the rest of the people that viewed that video.
So what can we learn from this?
We now understand that two of major reasons responsible for the manga's bad reputation is one: the unfortunate circumstance of the OG manga being the first series, and the overwhelming public opinion being unfairly skewed against it.
To wrap this up, I ask you to please give the manga a chance!! Read Shin Lupin first, and be aware of its flaws while also appreciating what it has contributed for the franchise and anime as a whole. I hope you enjoyed this little essay I wrote, and happy birthday Lupin III!

masterlist // my amazing editor’s account if you haven’t clicked on it already (i’m watching 👀)
Her hand is wrapped tightly around her daughter's wrist as she runs through the streets of New York.
Rain is pouring from the sky and there's a thick fog in front of them, shrouding her vision and forcing the young mother to jerk her daughter to the side at the last second to avoid falling into a pothole.
Her legs ache and her arms are full of papers, her hands are starting to go numb from the cold, and her lips are etched into a deep frown as they move wordlessly, uttering swears and curses because God, she did not expect to find herself in this situation.
Running is not the most ideal way of transit, but the subway stop she usually boards at is shut down because of a double homicide, and though it's scary, she can't help but be used to it. The part of Queens that she lives in isn't necessarily safe.
"Mommy, can we stop? I'm tired," a little voice whines from her side, breathless and raspy. "My legs hurt and so does my throat."
"We're almost there, jellybean," Y/N insists, picking up the pace as the little girl whines in protest again. "You'll be grateful when we get there, it's warm and you can eat a snack."
"But I don't want a snack," she wails. "I want to go home!"
Y/N suppresses a groan of frustration and rubs at her eyes with the heel of her free hand. It's typical RJ in all of her annoying splendour - always debating and negotiating.
"RJ," Y/N says sternly, slowing down for a moment and looking both ways before hurrying across the street and shooting her daughter a stern glare. "We aren't going to go home, you need to understand that."
RJ opens her mouth to protest but Y/N purses her lips and narrows her eyes, silencing her. RJ grumbles and looks like she wants to say something, but goes quiet and decides against it with a reluctant lick of her lips.
Y/N grabs hold of a falling binder and continues.
"We're going to the station today and Mr. Harrison is going to watch you while I work."
"I don't want to go to the station, mommy," RJ pleads, though now her voice is even in fear of being yelled at. "Mr. Harrison is boring and all he wants to do is talk about his girlfriend."
"Well, you're gonna have to wait it out," Y/N grits, letting go of RJ's hand to pull her raincoat hood over her dark, wet curls as she whines in protest and shoos her hand away. "This is very important to Mommy and we're already late -"
"I don't care if we're late!" the little girl cries, losing her composure. "I'm tired and your job is boring!"
Y/N sucks in an agitated breath and massages her aching temple with her free hand, slowing her quick strides to pull her to the side of the sidewalk. Her grip on RJ's hand tightens.
"Rosemary Juliet," she warns, shaking her hand as her eyes narrow menacingly, "If you do not stop talking back I will leave you on this street for the hobos to eat."
RJ goes quiet for a moment, confused, but only before the truth in her mother's statement washes over her.
Gasping, her eyes widen with fear and she clamps a small hand over her mouth, the inside of her mouth suddenly going dry.
"You wouldn't do that," RJ says quietly. "You're my mommy."
Y/N nods, though her stern gaze is indifferent.
"That's right, I'm your mommy," she confirms with a solemn nod, "which gives me the right to leave you on the street."
RJ's lip wobbles and doesn't complain for the rest of the trek.
Minutes later, they arrive at the precinct.
It's a large and intimidating towering building, and usually in New York's sunny season it's a beautiful piece of architecture that widens eyes and makes hearts soar, but in the dense fog it's just ominous and slightly brooding.
"I hate this place," RJ speaks defiantly as they walk in, clinging closer to her mom's side with widened eyes. "It's too big. And there're scary people everywhere."
"Yeah, well, they'll eat you too if you keep being sassy, Ro," Y/N counters with a smirk, poking the little girl's side and making her scowl.
"I know you're lying," RJ pouts, batting her hand away.
Y/N raises an eyebrow. "Am I?"
RJ goes quiet again and the older woman of the two has to suppress a snort.
They walk towards the elevator and press the button for the interrogation floor. What Y/N can't get over is how stunning the inside of the building is. It's made of granite and elegant marble, and the busy bustle of workers adds to the ambience - taking Y/N's breath away every time she comes to work.
It's an old facility, built in the early 1900's and housing many departments within its walls; and though it's about eighty years old, it still manages to make Y/N's heart leap every time she enters.
She wonders if that might be why she nearly pursued a career in architecture before little Rosie Juliet came along.
With the arrival of her child at the ripe age of seventeen, she put down her hopes of working in architecture and decided to work in a field where she could put her smarts to work whilst protecting her daughter at the same time.
It made her feel fulfilled and like her life had purpose; RJ is a blessing in disguise and though she can be a handful, Y/N loves her with every fibre of her being.
The bell to the elevator chimes and the arrow glows a bright blue, signalling the arrival of their carriage and the end of her wandering thoughts.
Grabbing RJ, she shakes her head and blows out a stream of air out through her lips, pushing the thoughts to the back of her mind while stepping into the elevator.
It's silent for a moment and Y/N takes the liberty of shaking out her wet hair, but only before a loud pounding of feet echoes throughout the hall and a skidding noise that is most likely from wet rubber squeals on the granite floors.
RJ winces at the noise and hisses.
"Wait!" a voice cries, sounding distressed.
Y/N surges forward and sticks her foot in the door, grunting at the sudden pain tingling through her leg, though ignoring it and putting her arm in the door for good measure.
A hand weaves its way through the door and narrowly avoids being crushed, but behind those bruised knuckles is a face Y/N knows all too well: her partner, the only well-known Brit of the NYPD; Thomas Holland.
He looks utterly disheveled.
His usually neatly-gelled hair is a mess - the rich chocolate brown curls resting on the top of his head look very untidy and damp, most likely from the rain - his black down jacket is soaked, seeping into the fabric and onto the floor, and his chest is heaving, probably from sprinting.
Y/N thinks he looks a little off, but she just smiles and backs up, allowing him more room to enter.
He clambers into the elevator with a worn sigh and shoots her a grateful look.
"You late too, Tom?" she brings up coolly, "me and Ro here are a good hour late."
"Yeah," he breathes absentmindedly, shaking off his wet jacket as the elevator starts to ascend. He gives her a tired smile and runs a hand through his damp curls. "The subway stop on 21st is closed."
Y/N nods. "Figured."
Tom tilts his head back and forth in agreement, before pausing for a moment and looking over the pair.
"I'm guessing your subway stop is closed too?" he offers.
"Bingo."
Tom raises an eyebrow and huffs.
"Knew it," he mumbles. "A bunch of people are late today too. The cops really need to come up with a better way of handling this stuff... I had to run here and nearly had a heart attack. Crazy how they put us through training only for it to leave in a good year, hey? Do you mind wiping this off? Thanks."
Y/N snorts and shakes her head, though she still moves forward to bat at the water beading on his back.
"That's very true," she agrees. "I'm surprised I didn't throw up."
Tom laughs and shoots her a tired smile, shaking out his wet umbrella before laying eyes on a bored looking RJ.
She's standing with her arms crossed near the back corner, full lips turned down into a pout and crazy dark brown curls askew over her forehead.
The sight would be amusing if she didn't look like she had the capability to burn holes in Tom's eyes, but alas, in blissful ignorance, his face brightens.
RJ's scowl deepens.
"Rosemary Juliet!" Tom exclaims brightly, walking over to her and running a hand through her damp curls. She responds with an angry mutter and a shoo of his hand away, though Tom doesn't take offence - he just chuckles and runs a hand through her crazy curls again, patting her arm. "You've grown so much, jellybean!"
"I saw you two days ago," RJ grumbles, glaring, swatting his hand off.
Tom smirks and ruffles her hair again.
"You're moody today," he observes, crouching down beside her with a furrow of his eyebrows and a tilt of his head to the side. "What's wrong, honey?"
Y/N sucks in a breath and has to bite her tongue, shifting uncomfortably.
Usually when asked how she's feeling, RJ either explodes or bursts into tears if feeling upset or angry enough.
It's a trait she takes right after her mother, unfortunately, and it's made for some awkward departures in the past due to her incessant crying or an angry talking-to if she gets too rude, but it's never been a real problem.
And luckily, to Y/N's astonishment, she remains stoic.
RJ's hazel eyes narrow as she gnashes her teeth, shifting on her bright yellow galoshes.
"I'm not angry," she snaps, glare at Tom's amused form intensifying. "I'm annoyed."
Tom nods solemnly and purses his lips.
"I completely understand, Ro," he rationalizes, leaning closer to her ear. "With a mother like that," he points over his shoulder with a smirk and Y/N rolls her eyes, "I would be angry almost all the time. I think you're a very strong girl for dealing with her."
RJ brightens at his words, standing up a little straighter and nearly beaming.
"I know, Mr. Tom," she whispers conspiratorially with a rigorous nod of her head, eyebrows furrowing and curls bouncing as a small smile pokes through. "She's really annoying and makes me come to her job!"
Tom's eyes widen and he gapes.
"I know!" he cries quietly, throwing his hands in the air and shaking his head, "What gives?"
"I don't know!" RJ agrees, "It's crazy!"
Tom opens his mouth and goes to talk more about his slightly amused though thoroughly annoyed coworker, but only before the bell dings and signals their stop at their floor.
Tom smiles at RJ and straightens up, ruffling her hair.
"I guess we're here," he says, shaking out his brown curls one more time.
Y/N rolls her eyes and swats Tom's arm, though her lips twitch into a smirk.
"I would appreciate it if you didn't teach the six year old to talk badly about their parents," she says coolly, grabbing RJ's hand and walking into the entrance of their floor.
"I'm not," he says simply with a shrug, though a small smirk remains on his face. "She was very upset about your behaviour and it's better to let that monster loose than stay inside, Y/L/N."
"Yeah, well, if she starts talking back to me I'm gonna send her to your apartment and let you," she gestures to his body with widened eyes, "deal with that mess."
Tom shrugs again and pats her arm, swiping his card to get into the separate offices. They walk in together.
"I have a dog, Y/N. I think she'd like staying with me better than staying with you," he jokes.
Y/N frowns and opens her mouth to protest before RJ interrupts her with a loud giggle.
Y/N whips her head around, surprised at the sound that left her little lips - RJ rarely giggled and was usually always in a state of solemn and grouchy, so this was quite a rare occurrence.
"I can hear you guys," RJ says with a wide smile as Y/N's frown deepens, looking positively gleeful before looking at Tom admiringly and surging forward to hug his waist.
Y/N's eyes narrow.
As her mother, RJ barely ever hugs her, and she usually has to force her to show any form of affection.
Such a sudden showing is odd, but this? This is unnatural.
Tom's eyebrows raise in surprise and he shoots Y/N a confused look to which she responds by throwing her hands in the air, but RJ's grip only tightens.
"Does that mean I can go home to your house and play with Tessa?" she asks hopefully, looking up at him through her big puppy-dog eyes before closing her eyes and hugging him tighter, "I don't want to stay at home with mommy because all she does is cry and read big paperwork."
Tom laughs and looks down at her adoringly.
"Of course you can come over, Ro," he says brightly, wrapping an arm around her back and patting gently. "I'd rather you watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine with me than listen to your mum cry."
"She's too little to watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine," Y/N mumbles.
Tom ignores her and continues.
"Would you like to come with me after your mum is finished today?" he offers.
RJ gasps and jumps up and down, bouncing over towards her mom.
"Yes! Yes! Mommy, can I?" she cries, eyes wide with hope, "I want to play with Tess!"
Y/N shoots Tom a glare and feels frustration boil inside of her, but at the little hands tugging on her coat she looks down at RJ and smiles tiredly, patting her brown curls.
"No, I don't think you can today, Ro," she says softly, "I have that big interrogation with Mr. Tom today and I'm sure we'll both be exhausted when it ends."
RJ whines and pouts and Y/N has to take a deep breath to prepare herself for what will most definitely ensue - stubbornness and grudging.
RJ starts tugging at her coat and kicking her shins, but Y/N isn't focused on her because she notices that Tom looks confused.
His eyebrows furrow and he bites his lip, looking off into space as his foot bounces up and down.
He glances at his watch and his eyebrows knit together into an even deeper line, murmuring something under his breath, but only before his eyes widen alarmingly and he does an odd dancing shifting thing.
He grabs Y/N's arm and RJ's wrist, hurrying between the stalls.
"What are you doing?" Y/N scoffs, trying to tug away from his grip. "I can walk myself, thanks!"
Tom ignores her and his eyes dart over the compartments.
"Where's Haz, where's Haz..."
"Tom!"
"The interrogation started ten minutes ago," Tom hisses suddenly, whipping his head around to shoot her a glare.
A surge of anxiousness and anger flood through her system and her eyes widen, understanding.
Leave it to her to be late to the most important milestone in her career... she could get fired!
RJ kicks at her shins again and it tears her from her thoughts, but she ignores it and persists.
"What do you mean?" she asks Tom loudly, leaning in closer to Tom as a lump crawls up her throat, "It started ten minutes ago?"
"Yes!"
She sucks in a breath and her vision wavers.
"Fuck!"
Heads from neighbouring offices turn and some gasp loudly, but Y/N ignores it and hurries beside Tom with more urgency.
"What does that mean, mommy? Mommy?" RJ asks confusedly, whipping her head back and forth between the two adults. "What are we doing - ?"
"RJ," Y/N hisses through gritted teeth, grabbing her other hand and slowing as they reach Harrison's office. "Stay here."
"Why?" RJ whines, "I want to come with you!"
Y/N pauses for a second and fights the urge to scream.
RJ could wait outside while they work, but then again, criminals would be passing back and forth between rooms. The little girl's spunky and outgoing personality could cause a problem with the felons because more often than not she points out imperfections on random passerby with no conviction, and the young mother doesn't feel like dragging her daughter away from a snaggletoothed old man trying to come at her.
Y/N puts her foot down.
"Rosemary," she says sternly, crouching down and grabbing her wrist firmly. "You are going to stay with Harrison for now."
RJ opens her mouth in protest but Y/N cuts her off.
"No arguing, RJ. You are going to listen to him, and do what he asks you to do without any protesting. Understand?"
RJ looks conflicted, but nods slowly.
"Okay," she grumbles. "I will."
"That's my girl," Y/N smiles, straightening and ruffling her thick curls.
She backs away and quickly thanks Harrison, who just dropped a stack of papers, gaping.
"I'm watching her today?" Harrison shouts, cupping his hands over his mouth as they round a corner, but when he gets no answer he groans and turns to face a frowning Rosie, offering her a weak smile.
"Can I have your Twix?" she asks suddenly.
Harrison's smile falls. He sighs, reaching over his desk to wordlessly toss her the candy.
RJ hums happily as she nibbles on her chocolate, and Harrison watches with longing, both blissfully unaware of the firestorm between the two detectives.
"I can't believe we're fucking late," Tom speaks worriedly as he dodges a door to the face, glancing at a winded Y/N, "This is the most crucial part to the drug ring case, and this guy doesn't like to be kept waiting. Do you think they can let him go if we're late?"
"Shouldn't you know that already?" Y/N asks, shooting him a look as they round another corner to the back room far into the heart of the department.
Tom hesitates, "I... I don't know that, no. But he's chained up, so it's fine."
Y/N laughs bitterly and shoots him an exasperated smile, slowing her strides once they reach the door.
"Of course." She gestures towards the closed door and raises an eyebrow. "Ladies first, Holland."
Tom laughs dryly, opening the thick steel door. "Obviously."
Y/N holds her breath as the door swings open, expecting to see an angered Chief of Police, but she lays her eyes on an empty table with no trace of any recent use. It's gleaming, as if just cleaned, and the mirror on the inside is glittering in the harsh fluorescents.
It's clear that no one has used it, or is planning to use it, and Y/N's heart stops.
She stands stock-still in the doorway.
"Tom," she starts casually, turning to face him. "What's the date for the interrogation?"
Tom freezes and his mouth falls open, eyes scanning the room.
"The 22nd," he mumbles.
"And what is the current date?"
Tom glances reluctantly at his digital watch, paling.
"It's the 21st," he says quietly.
Y/N feels like her heart stops and picks up at the same time.
"Thanks," she whispers.
They stand in stunned silence, feeling relieved for not being late but also feeling annoyed for getting the date wrong because they're damn professionals and landing a job at the NYPD at the age of twenty-three is almost unheard of.
She's glad that the possibility of getting fired is swept under the rug, but she can't help but wonder how this has happened.
So instead, she decides to change the subject.
"Do you wanna go to the Chipotle down the street?"
Tom nods, releasing a breath he didn't know he was holding. "Sure."
Y/N smiles weakly and pats his shoulder, turning around to walk back to the offices before a conflicting thought blossoms in her conscience.
"Should we bring RJ?" she asks, shifting on her toes and biting her lip.
Tom furrows his eyebrows and contemplates for a moment.
"We can leave her to Harrison," he says finally, a small smirk twitching up the corners of his lips. "His life is too perfect. He needs some stress."
Y/N laughs. "Perfect."

Love In The Time Of
What seems like ages ago I started this blog. I think I had just graduated college. I wrote a piece called, “Love in the Time Of,” in which I tried to encapsulate (I’m sure poorly), the feeling of being out of college, floating through life and anxieties untethered.
That seems small now, but the title still seems to fit. So when I decided I wanted to get back into writing (I’m sure I could say for noble purposes to give people uplifting words during this time of crisis etc etc., but really because I’m bored and other people are bored so the chances you’ll read my writing are just statistically higher), the title seemed to fit. In the time of... In the time of what? Pandemic? Disease? Quarantine? Being in small spaces with your loved ones? Being far away from your loved ones? Uncertaintly? Beauty? Eating a lot of popcorn? The list goes on. The truth is, there’s a lot happening and there’s also very little. So it seemed like a good time to excersie writing the details. The day in and day outs that always get left out because grand adventures are much easier to write about. But what makes me special, sets me apart from the rest? Answer: nothing. For example, it’s much harder to write that today my alarm went off at 7:30am (well really it went off at 6:45 but I snoozed it for 45 minutes.) I got up in a little bit of a panic and pulled on some leggings. The sun was out. I started the hot water heater upper thing, filled my water bottle I knew I wouldn’t drink, pet my cat who was up half the night, and woke up my boyfriend who didn’t want to wake up because the cat was up half the night. I pulled out my laptop and unrolled my yoga mat. I checked my watch- 7:40. Text from my mom- Not going to make yoga this morning. SUN (all caps) is out. Going on a walk. Power to you mom. Sent back sun emoji. Started Zoom meeting. Drank tea. A couple people trickled on. Led my meditation session followed by a 20 minute yoga session while my cat ran around and my boyfriend made coffee. The sun was in my face. I talked about Princess Dairies the movie, and how Jonathan Van Ness on the Queer Eye episode I watched the other day led similar yoga poses I did and said the same thing at the end of his session; “The light in me sees and recognizes the light in you.” Its harder to write that when I closed my computer I felt kind of empty. I got some coffee. Made some oatmeal. Hugged Andy because he needed a hug- touch affirmation is his love language. Listened to the radio station, John in the morning. I worry about him in the booth all alone. He played Tom Petty’s “Wild Flowers” and Queen’s “Under Pressure.” It felt fitting. He is such a good DJ, so I posted a picture of my Morning Show mug on instagram, so he would see it but also the rest of the world to know I’m okay? Cool? Interesting? I can’t even tell my motivations any more.
I sat outside on my tiny porch that overlooks a Safeway roof. I sat in the sun and pretended I was on Spring Break (this week is Spring Break for public schools, say what you will). I listened to more music. I played guitar kind of poorly and wondered if the guys at the Safeway loading dock could hear me (Monday is a delivery day). I wondered if they could, would they be inspired or annoyed. I chose to think inspired. I tried to play “New Slang” by the Shins but couldn’t find the key to sing in. It’s harder to write that instead of some big adventure, I did a home workout with Andy. Squats are hard and relationships are not shiny. I took a bath. I read some essays by a non-fiction author about needing her own space as a middle -aged woman and mother. I wonder how she is doing now? I face-timed my mom. I had a Zoom dance party with my cousins. I made a salad and listened to the ‘Daily’ podcast about unemployment. I wondered if it was good spring break vibes to keep up with the news, but it also somehow makes me feel less alone.
I organized under the bathroom sink. I put all the soaps in a little bag leftover from a Christmas gift exhange. That made me feel good for some reason. It’s hard to write that I am sitting on the couch. No metaphors, no big meanings, words of wisdom. Just sitting. Andy is playing video games with his brother in California. My instinct is to be annoyed, but I know it’s important. Soon I’ll go on a walk, but maybe I’ll just take a nap and feel guilty. And maybe after that we’ll watch more Star Wars. I think we’re at the movie with the Yoda puppet. Thank goodness we got more popcorn kernels. I can hear the cars below driving into the Safeway parking lot. I wonder if they’re scared to be there, if they’re all wearing masks. My laundy has stopped. I can hear the cat’s water filter, like a softly flowing stream in the distance. And that, I suppose, is love in the time of.

Two versions of the very lovely New Slang, the song “that will change your life”, by The Shins. James Mercer not afraid to write up a gem. Always liked “Gold teeth and a curse for this town...” The town being Albuquerque, AS IF THAT MATTERS. The song came out in 2001, gained prominence in 2004 by its inclusion in the film Garden State, and still seems to exist even unto this very day. Top vid from 2012. Let’s give a shout-out to Jessica Dobson, who ain’t too bad a backup singer. Lurking below in the shadowy demimonde, the band come out and deliver the goods on Letterman, also 2012. Mercer also not afraid to allude to auteur-ism and Jeff Mangum: "I always loved these auteurs who presented themselves as bands," Mercer later explained, referencing Neutral Milk Hotel and Lilys as examples.

The TV shows I have watched in 2021, part 1.
Shows I finished:
The Uncanny Counter: Exciting, full of humor and heart and found family, and the character is so lovable and pulls very hard on your heartstrings. That is the strongest aspect of that show, for me. There's a lot of talk about human greed and corruption and other things as that is how the demons in the show feeds, which I sometimes felt a little too heavy handed and the shows spend a bit too much time on that aspect of the plot, but the story manages to be pretty fast-paced, does not drag on too much and there is always some tension there to grab you, so I was never bored.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, s4: This show was so self-aware of itself; both in terms of their flaws and what made them great that they actually managed to be a pretty chill and fun watch. But as the series progressed they somehow lost that spark and the ability, took itself maybe a bit too seriously and yet not serious enough so a part of it was just too silly and some things felt like they were trying to hard to be bold and dark but failed.
Mr. Queen: Shin Hye Sun's amazing performance in the lead role makes Mr. Queen a pretty decent and fun show. It's rather light, funny and exciting. The drama would not be the same without her. It did drag a bit, especially in the beginning, or feel a bit all over the place. A fun, light fusion sageuk.
Signal: I can understand all the praise this show has received and I enjoyed it, but they also never hooked me in the way that I did. But then again this isn't my type of genre and a lot of these types of shows don't manage to do so.
Extraordinary You: At its core, this is a very ordinary teendrama about love and friendship and finding oneself. The drama does a lot of these things incredibly well It's not perfect, but it's so sweet and with a huge heart behind it where you can feel all the emotions the characters are feeling and all of the character, or almost all of them, are so lovable. The concept of it is quite neat, and it does manage to do something new, while also just telling a very standard teendrama story.
Dickinson, s2: It doesn't look or feel like your standard period drama with it's use of modern popmusic and other things are used to make everything a bit surreal and not quite normal. Death comes to visit or someone uses modern slang that pulls you out of the story, but in a good way. It adds to the carm of it. I think the episodes are strangely fun and work well in their absurdity and I hope we get more series of these episodes because I think they just have room to grow.
Merlin, s1-3: The first three series of these episodes are just really good adventure family show. It has this fairytale vibe to it, which I really enjoy. They are never trying to be more than they are, although they sometimes rush through things, but I really do appreciate how light and fun this fantasy show full of adventure and magic is considering how dark and bold some of these new fantasy shows post-GOT all feel. I miss this sort of feel-good fantasy.
The Office, s1-4: It's taking me a while to get me through this show. I do not know if it's out of all these memes I've seen and I feel like I've already seen a lot of these jokes or if that humor isn't really my thing. I like it well enough and often have it on in the background but I am not often in the mood for it. I do not think they are that funny.
Crash Landing on You: I was was not that into this one. The characters were good and I found many things interesting about this drama, but the romance and just the story itself dragged on for such a long time. The episodes were some over an hour long and it did not have enough story for that. So towards the end I was really bored.
Alice in Boarderland: This was a real roller coaster ride and the story is something I espect more from a Japanese movies than dramas (though I may not have seen enough Jdramas). The story was fast and constantly surprising you. Really good, the story was so gripping and full of twists and interesting characters. Bloody and brutal, but in a good way.
Vincenzo: Vincenzo surprised me so much, but I was not expecting this entertainment when I started it. A strange mix of soap opera level drama, comedy and legal drama that works somehow so well together. Very colorful, wacky and fun characters, one of the most entertaining bad guys I have watched in a kdrama in a long time. I was always looking forward to watching the next episode and the story never seemed to drag or drop in intensity or action throughout it's run. Could well end up being my favorite drama of the year. Pure and simple entertainment that I will not easily forget.
Sisyphus: The Myth: I need to stop torturing myself through the Park Shin Hye drama just for Park Shin Hye. This drama had a really great idea behind it and it started of pretty well, but I thought the mystery in the episodes dragged on for a long time and just wasn't that well put together or that exciting to watch. This was more romance than science fiction and I was not feeling the romance here and I found the lead male character so boring.
Age of Samurai - Battle for Japan: At first I thought it would be a drama, but it turned out to be a documentary. Really interesting history which I really immersed myself in.
The Lost Pirate Kingdom: I felt like I knew about a lot of these events that this documentary talked about through the tv show Black Sails that it might have damaged the suspense a bit. Sometimes I felt like I was getting a really detailed recap of that show. Still quite fun.
Wandavision: It was just like I expected a Marvel tv show to be. It was great fun, great action and fun characters. The episodes take advantage of a slightly slower story that TV shows offer compared to movies, but still have this Marvel feel to them. Marvel knows its audience very well.
Lost Cities with Albert Lin: I got Disney+ and enjoyed so many of the documentaries that were on there. I loved learning about all the lost, secret treasures and cultures that history has to offer, that are almost hidden from modern view.
Lost Treasures of the Maya: Albert Lin has some great series on Disney + that are really fun to watch. He's almost like the modern Indiana Jones. I devoured his shows over the course of a few days.
Drain the Oceans: So much fun learning all that's hidden on the ocean floor. I did not watch all the episodes in this series, but I went between the episodes that had more to do with ancient history and things that I'm interested about.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: It went a slightly different route and had more to say than I honestly expected from a Marvel tv show. And while it did have a rather slow start it manage to say everything they needed and wanted to say and manage to build these characters well enough so that this origins story of the new Captain America is well set up and established for the next phase of Marvel cinema. It was very fun and exciting.
Navillera: really heartfelt show that truly did tug at my heartstrings every episode. The story is really emotional and sincere without being too sad or depressing. It never drags you down, but much rather gives you a bit of hope and wholesome vibes.
Not Yet Thirty: Very short but fun stories about three friends. The pacing wasn't the best, it felt a bit rushed, and I didn't think they divided the time between these friends that well, so parts of it felt underdeveloped and boring to watch.
Shadow and Bone: a rather traditional YA fantasy story and maybe a bit lacking in depth here because there was a lot going on and it only had eight episodes to tell it all. But the characters were really fun and there was always a lot of excitement going o.. And thanks to the Crows there was always something that surprised me at every turn and it was just so fun how they wove it all together. Came out much better than I thought it would and I'm really excited for what's next.
Youth of May: I did not expect much from this drama at first, but it still surprised me how light it was, despite the Gwangju uprising being one of the topics it covered. The story got darker as time went on, but it never got too hard to watch or too sad. It was really well done and the despite how short it was compared to many other kdramas it never felt rushed or anything.
The shows I dropped:
Lovestruck in the City: The characters were just so boring, especially the male lead. And the format that the episodes were trying to have - almost like they were filming a documentary - just did not work for me.
Royal Secret Agent: I love period dramas and I find Myungsoo really cute. But there was just nothing really going on here and the story felt like it was trying to be more clever than it actually was and the characters didn't seem to be going through any type of character development. It was just kinda boring.
My Father is Strange: While cute and cozy, these types of stories aren't really my cup of tea. They just don't seem to hold my attention that well.
Beyound Evil: Might give them another chance, because even though I'm not very fond of crime and murder mysteries like this, I have heard almost nothing but praise for this drama and I'm a huge Yeo Jin Goo fan. The mystery didn't hook me that much though, but maybe I just didn't get far enough into it.
Doom at Your Service: I do not know what it is… but this kind of paranormal romance does not really work on me even though I love fantasy and I like rom-coms. I prefer ghosts and such to these immortal supernatural beings... unless it is the main female character who is supernatural and lonely. The romance of a immortal male and a human female just doesn't seem to work for me.

10 Songs
@crazy-fruit tagged me in a “name 10 Songs that you’re currently obsessed with” thing, which sounds like great fun, so here goes! Thanks love!
1) “Love Like Ghosts/Meet Me In The Woods” by Lord Huron — These are actually two different tracks on the same album, but they are musically the exact same song (“Meet Me” is faster, but the chords are the same), but I wanted to list them together because they have the same feel. The lyrics for both of these songs just give me all the RebelCaptain feels. Both of them are the inspiration for my fic “Ghosts.”
2) “Stay With Me” by Ryan Adams -- Ryan Adams is a new obsession for me. His self-titled album has a lot of amazing songs, but this one I really enjoy. Just a good Springsteen-esque classic rock vibe.
3) “All Along the Watchtower” by Bob Dylan -- I actually had no idea that Bob Dylan wrote this song and was the original performer, not Jimi Hendrix (shame on you Dakota, you claim to know a lot about classic rock), but holy moly, just some good rock n’roll.
4) “Various Storms and Saints” by Florence + the Machine -- Starts slow and mournful but builds to just this crazy intense and haunting sort of ballad. If it had existed when I was in high school I totally would have performed this for a talent show.
5) “New Slang” by The Shins -- I KNOW I’m really late to the party on this artist, but hey, don’t judge. Just a good mellow chill-out song.
6) “Blue Eyes” by the Cary Brothers -- another song from the Garden State soundtrack. This one just makes me think of my boyfriend lol
7) “Shut Up and Dance” - Ashley Tisdale cover -- So the original WALK THE MOON version is one of my favorite dance songs, but the BF found this version on Spotify, and we may or may not dance to it when we don’t get married. And yes, its the mean girl from High School Musical. I was surprised too.
8) “Halls (Canyons version)” by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness -- An acoustic version of the song on his self-titled album, but I honestly like this version better. I really like this incarnation of this artist. He’s probably my favorite ever.
9) “Coffee and Cigarettes” by Augustana -- This song just hits me really hard in the winter, because it’s about a girl who suffers hard from her mental illness in the winter. Also this band is amazing.
10) “Disarm” by the Civil Wars -- Another cover, but I prefer this version to the original. It seems sadder in this song than in the original, and is obviously a lot more mellow than the original Smashing Pumpkins version.
Cool! I would like to tag @llnzmorgan, @cats-and-metersticks (if you haven’t already done it), @redcurls121, and @frecklefaceb!

Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (November 3-9, 2019)
Another chilly week has come and gone, and with it came a lot of new music fighting for our attention. This was especially true when it came to rock and pop music this week, as we got some great new songs and music videos from the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Angels & Airwaves, Best Coast and more.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again scoured the internet for some of the hottest new tracks released over the last seven days. Here are eight (and a few more) that we think are worth taking another listen to this weekend.
1. Ozzy Osbourne, “Under The Graveyard”: Osbourne’s first official single in nearly a decade, “Under The Graveyard” is classic Ozzy. From the fuzzed-out metal guitars to the dark, haunting melody and husky vocals, the song has Osbourne’s signature all over it. The lyrics are a bit downcast, but the melody goes with those dark lyrics nicely. It’s a great way to welcome the Prince of Darkness back to music after the rough couple of years he’s had. (video)
2. Angels & Airwaves, “Kiss & Tell”: Taking a break from his alien-hunting hustle, Tom DeLonge has revived Angels & Airwaves for a new album and single. “Kiss & Tell” focuses a little more on the pop-punk side of the band’s sound, though the big, atmospheric electronics are still very much present. (video)
3. Patrick Stump, “Deep Blue Love”: Fall Out Boy vocalist Patrick Stump has released a soulful new solo track for the upcoming film ‘Spell.’ “Deep Blue Love” is fairly formulaic when it comes to slow jams, but Stump seems to play into that here. The song is accompanied by a cute, quirky, self-aware video that lets you in a bit on just how cheesy it and the song are. That being said, Stump’s vocals are smooth and his falsetto on-point, which make it a very pleasant listen. (video)
4. Panic! At The Disco, “Into The Unknown”: “Into The Unknown” is a true theatrical piece, like it was meant to be sung powerfully on Broadway. The song, which is being released as the first single from the upcoming ‘Frozen 2’ film, is a full story following the thought process of Elsa’s character probably before the main adventure of the film kicks off. I don’t think it will have the same kind of popularity as “Let It Go” from the original film, just because it is too theatrical for radio, but it is big and catchy (especially the chorus), which will allow for some grip. (video)
5. Hot Chelle Rae, “I Hate LA”: After four years, Hot Chelle Rae are back with a brand new single. “I Hate LA” is less of the dance-y pop-punk of their big single “Tonight, Tonight,” and more of a refined pop tune. The easy beat and minimalist vocal melody give the song a breezy, California feel. The lyrics unfold to reveal a simple, easy to follow story that shows how they’ve grown as storytellers and songwriters. (video)
6. Higher Power, “Low Season”: “Low Season” falls somewhere in between heavy pop-punk, grunge and 90s alternative. The combination is kind of intriguing. If you ever wanted to listen to Hinder and Story of the Year at the same time, than this could be for you. (video)
7. Best Coast, “For The First Time”: “For The First Time” is a post-break-up song that celebrates being able to be yourself again. From the very beginning, the bright, country-tinged melody takes hold of you and immediately transports you into this open, happy, upbeat world. It makes you feel good just listening to it. (video)
8. The World/Inferno Friendship Society, “Freedom is a Wilderness Made for You and Me”: There is a haunting quality to “Freedom is a Wilderness Made for You and Me,” a product of its dark melodic tones and strong, dramatic vocals. The one thing that pulls you out of that sense of dread are those horns, which have a nice, lifting effect amidst the darkness. (video)
Further Listening:
· Graham Coxon, “She Knows”: (video)
· Beck, “Dark Places”: (video)
· The Rentals, “Spaceships”: (video)
· The Black Lips, “Gentleman”: (video)
· The Shins, “Waimanalo”: (video)
· Atmosphere, “Bde Maka Ska”: (video)
· Beach Slang, “Tommy In The 80s”: (video)
· The Naked And Famous, “Sunseeker”: (video)
A lot of new rock and pop songs and music videos were released over the last week. With the weekend here, now is the perfect chance to take a look back and listen to some of the best. Garden State Hotel Scene
The hotel is 30 minutes away from changbei international airport and only 10 minutes to. Garden state (2004) soundtrack 16 jan 2004.
Located on the waterfront in the vibrant downtown district

Music Shuffle Meme 15
Put your music library on shuffle, post the next 10 songs that come up and say what each one means to you.
1. Mr. Tambourine Man - The Byrds One of those songs I've always kinda known and liked, added it to my collection after reading the 5-star Songs for a Teenage Nomad, because I wanted an offline playlist and this was one of the easier and cheaper ones to locate.
2. New Slang - The Shins Trust the Scrubs soundtrack to ruin my 4 years of ignoring this dumb band everyone was obsessed with in 04-05, and stealth bomb me with the catchiest song ever.
3. Havendance - composed by James Holsinger One of the first band songs I ever fell in love with. I was so jealous when it was taken away from our band and the better band got to perform it...but at least I got it as an MP3.
4. Here Comes the Sun - Glee Cast (ft. Naya Rivera/Demi Lovato) Feelings on the original: neutral. As a soft and delicate lullaby sung by two young women, though? UPGRADE.
5. Supermassive Black Hole - Muse Ooh, the one and only Muse song I kind of like on its own merit! Still only because of Twilight, but at least I can remember how this one goes.
6. Hands Clean - Alanis Morissette OH LOOK IT'S 2002 AGAIN. This was one of my absolute favorite songs then, and it still gives me that indescribable instant "happy" feeling when it starts up. IDK why, given its subject matter, but it probably relates to the fact that for over 10 years I thought she was singing about being a cougar with a 17-year-old male assistant.
7. Whine Up - Kat DeLuna ft. Elephant Man This song is so ridiculous, but So You Think You Can Dance brought a lot of those to me. It is a bop. (Am I using that right??)
8. How to Save a Life - Grey's Anatomy cover I always liked the original, but it's so much better with these voices. I'm one of the few people who defends the musical episode in general, but this particular number is on a whole different plane of greatness.
9. Evening News - Chamillionaire Stumbled upon this in college after some crackvid for Torchwood had acclimated me to "Ridin'," and I came to the conclusion that Chamillionaire was the only good male hip-hop artist ever, for his lack of vulgarity. P.S. I forgot how loaded with mid-2000s references this is, wow.
10. Gives You Hell - Glee Cast (Lea Michele) I had liked the original before Glee covered it, but now whenever I hear that version I'm like, TAKE YOUR WHINY MANCHILD BUTT OUT OF THE WAY AND LET THE ADORABLE SASSY TEENAGER MAKE YOUR RUDE TRASH TALK TOOTHLESS.

Did We Miss the Point of One of the World’s Most Famous Sculptures?
Donatello, David, 1428–1432. Photo via Wikimedia Commons.
Donatello, David, 1428–1432. Photo © Arte & Immagini srl/CORBIS/Corbis via Getty Images.
Any thought of the biblical King David is bound to conjure Michelangelo’s 17-foot-tall marble masterwork. Although the sculpture, created between 1501 and 1504, has become one of the most famous artworks in the world, the iconic symbol of the Florentine Republic would not have been possible without Donatello’s earlier work on the same theme, which remains one of the most beautiful, enigmatic, and radical sculptures ever made.
Composed sometime between the 1430s and 1450s, Donatello’s bronze David represents a series of firsts in art history. It constitutes the first bronze male nude and the first free-standing statue—unsupported by or unattached to a support—since antiquity. At the time Donatello made the sculpture, the character of David represented how Florence saw itself: a small, mercantile city-state without a duke, and with a history of defending itself against more powerful enemies. But while the David and Goliath story became a popular motif in Florentine art, there is a subversive, queer side to this particular version.
Just a shepherd boy when he fought Goliath, David’s disadvantage is demonstrated here by his prepubescent physique. Naked except for a helmet, sandals, and shin guards, David’s androgynous body is smooth and unmuscular. He shifts his weight onto one foot in naturalistic contrapposto—rather than an idealized, heroic pose—with his hand resting on his provocatively jutting hip as he triumphantly steps his foot on the Philistine conqueror’s head. When viewed from behind, it’s almost impossible to tell what gender or sex the figure is. His hair is long and luxurious, and, judging by the traces of gilding, was originally presented as gold. In one hand, he holds a rock from his sling; in the other, the oversized sword of his enemy.
David, 1428-1432. Donatello Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence
Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, known simply as Donatello, revolutionized art in Florence during the early Renaissance. His pioneering sculptures helped to transform the perception of the medium from a medieval craft into an expression of individual genius. In his Lives of the Artists, Giorgio Vasari, the father of art history, tells a tale of the artist, Pygmalion-like, begging his lifelike sculptures to speak back to him. Vasari also credits Donatello as the artist most aligned with classical values, who restored the art of sculpture to ancient Greco-Roman standards.
Donatello’s David represents a union of classical and humanist concepts in alignment with Christian iconography. The David and Goliath story here manifests both the humanist belief that the will can triumph over strength, as well as the Christian conviction that faith in God can overcome any obstacle—exemplified by this skinny youth standing victorious over his far stronger foe. David’s beauty also denotes ancient ideals revived in the Renaissance: the value of physical perfection as a virtue and a celebration of sexual relationships between men and beautiful male youths. Donatello modeled the heads of many of his sculptures and statues from Roman busts, and art historians now generally believe that David’s was based on Antinous, Emperor Hadrian’s gay lover.
Appraising the sculpture today, one gets the impression that there is a bond beyond violence between the victorious and conquered. The suggestive nature of the sculpture seems to hint that David may have defeated Goliath through seduction. (Indeed, Donatello’s later sculpture of the Israelite heroine Judith with the head of Holofernes is often compared to this David.) One of the wings of Goliath’s helmet seems to be climbing up David’s leg, sensually caressing his inner thigh. While this ornament would have been useful in hiding some support work, Donatello was also playing a formal trick: In its original display on a high pedestal in the courtyard of the Medici’s Palazzo Vecchio, onlookers would have peered up at the sculpture, the feather leading the eye to its behind. Curiously, Goliath’s helmet also shows a relief of cupids pulling a chariot in which another cupid is riding, an illustration of the “Triumph of Love.”

Were early Renaissance audiences similarly seduced by David? It’s not clear exactly how viewers responded to this work. In 1504, Francesco di Lorenzo Filarete, a poet and herald in the Florentine government, advised that Michelangelo’s new David might replace Donatello’s in the the Palazzo Vecchio, and the latter be moved elsewhere. Donatello’s sculpture, he said, was “imperfect”: Its leg looked schiocha—meaning silly or awkward—from behind. In the poetry of the day, schiocha was also a colloquial term for a male lover or object of desire. Filarete implied that viewers might have felt it was inappropriate for the biblical king to be depicted in such a sexualized way, even though the much-discussed love between David and Saul’s son Jonathan serves as one of the closest bonds between two men in the bible. Perhaps this aspect of David’s story influenced Donatello’s depiction; it may have also appealed to the artist directly.
Art historian H.W. Janson first posited that the artist himself was gay (or at least rumored to be) in 1957, and that Donatello’s personal biography drove his homoerotic depiction of David. Janson quoted stories about the artist that had been collected and published anonymously in a gossipy 1548 book about the Florentine circle of Cosimo de’ Medici—the artist’s great patron and friend, and the most likely commissioner of David. According to the anecdotes in the volume, Donatello was notorious for falling for his male models and apprentices, pursuing them around Italy in a rage if they left him. Janson’s allusion to Donatello’s homosexuality, and his suggestion that the artist’s identity might have played a part in this masterpiece, put critical noses out of joint. Yet this reaction was particularly rash, considering that 15th-century Florence was considered a gay mecca.
Florence had such a reputation for being accepting of homosexuality that the French called gay sex the “Florentine Vice,” and in Germany, Florenzer was slang for a sodomite. Still, same-sex relations weren’t exactly legal; records show that a huge proportion of men in the city were accused of or charged with the crime of sodomy (including the eminent Leonardo da Vinci, who was working as an apprentice in Florence when he was accused). Conservative monks railed against this acceptance for more than moral reasons, worrying that the growing trend of homosexual relations between unmarried men would lead to a city-wide population decline. Recent studies have also revealed that politicians of the day attempted to combat the issue by opening up brothels to lure them back into the arms of women. Yet relationships between men remained generally accepted, especially in the city’s artistic circles.
When viewed in this context, it seems plausible that Donatello’s David could both symbolize the resilient city-state and openly celebrate Florence’s queer culture. The academic Michael Rocke has even suggested that David’s floppy hat might have been a coded reference to the “hat game,” a seduction ploy where Florentine men would steal the hats of boys they fancied on the street, refusing to give them back until the object of their desire agreed to gratify them.
Andrea del Verrocchio, David, ca. 1466-69, Museo del Bargello, Florence. Image via Wikimedia Commons.
David, 1501-1504. Michelangelo Buonarroti Galleria dell'Accademia
Donatello’s David inspired subsequent sculptors with ambition, and it became fashionable to attempt the subject. Andrea del Verrocchio’s David (1473–75), also commissioned by the Medici family, seems almost a correction to Donatello’s. Verrocchio’s version likewise features a skinny, idealized youth, but a more capable one, wearing slightly more practical armor. Michelangelo’s massive David, by contrast, shows the hero as a man, not a boy, right before the battle. Lean and perfectly muscled, this David looks as if he’s spent his whole life training for this moment. Later still, Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s take on the subject, from 1623–24, depicts the hero in action; he twists his nude body, caught in the moment of pulling back his sling to discharge the stone that will fell Goliath. Bernini modeled his David’s fearsome grimace on himself, distorting his own face in a mirror.
All of these Davids depict strong, determined, resolutely chaste figures prepared for the task at hand or contented with their victory. But Donatello’s masterpiece also possesses a unique swagger. None of the later Davids seem to notice or care about how good-looking they are (even if, like Michaelangelo’s, they are clearly designed as ideal beauties). Donatello’s statue, though, has a self-possessed sense of beauty. Just as Vasari recorded Donatello urging his naturalistic sculptures to come to life, the artist created this work with the express purpose of being beautiful, almost willing his David to respond to his own desire, as well as the viewer’s. This ambiguous masterpiece has, in the past, seemed to pose questions whose answers are lost to history. Perhaps it is only now that we can fully appreciate David in all his complexity.

This Fall, we are counting down the 100 best tracks of the 2000s with a new article every Monday. To learn more about the project and why the 2000s were amazing for music, click here.
This week, we reach the halfway mark, presenting positions 60 to 51. All 50 tracks revealed so far from the list will wait for you at the very end of this article in a neat Spotify playlist.

60. The Shins - New Slang
Sometimes, all it takes for a song to become a hit is for Natalie Portman to look at you say that the track “will change your life, I swear”. The folk ballad New Slang definitely changed The Shins’ life, helping the band’s début album to sell over 500,000 copies. With its light tambourine and dreamy melody, New Slang is the song every 60’s band wishes it would’ve made. It’s also arguably the only song licensed to McDonald’s to feature a line about having “dirt in your fries”.
59. Estelle feat. Kanye West - American Boy
On American Boy, London singer Estelle muses about exploring the USA with the boy of her dream. It’s not clear just how great of a fit Kanye West would be for her romantically speaking, but she sure holds more than her ground in the collaboration. Hell, she even invites herself to ad-lib all over his verse. A genuinely fun collaboration, American Boy stood the test of time extremely well and frankly, you can hardly find better in terms of one-hit wonders in the 2000s.
58. The Streets - Has It Come To This
Hip-hop’s history in the United Kingdom was a troubled one up until the turn of the century. Three years after Roots Manuva’s seminal Brand New Second Hand, The Streets planted a new point of reference with début album Original Pirate Material to lead the scene. The first single Has It Come To This encapsulates the best of what the album has to offer, informed by a UK garage beat, a soothing piano melody and a collage-like DIY production.
57. TV On The Radio - Staring At The Sun
Starting with light acapella harmonies on the Young Liars version, Staring At The Sun quickly takes a turn for the darkest when the mammoth fuzz of the bass line kicks in. Add rapid-fire hi-hats and guitar strums and you’ve got the foundation for TV On the Radio’s first - and best - single. A track with the consistency of black mud, Staring At The Sun helped the band inject a sinister vibe to New York’s rock explosion of the early millennium.
56. Kanye West - Heartless
Sure, 808 & Heartbreaks might not be Kanye West’s most acclaimed album. But in hindsight, it’s becoming pretty clear that it is his most influential one, the most game-changing one. Lead single Heartless came out as a slap in the face for any long-time fan of the rapper, with its auto-tune overload and robotic beats. Kanye West sings more than he raps, and it’s easy to see how his foray into synthpop and cold production reached a new generation of rappers who aren’t afraid anymore to show their feelings.
55. Modest Mouse - 3rd Planet
Modest Mouse started its career with a three-album winning streak, culminating with 2000’s The Moon & Antarctica. The album opened with 3rd Planet, a combination of all the elements that made Modest Mouse a household name in indie rock. With a vulnerable vibe passing through its shaky guitars and introspective lyrics likely relating to a miscarriage, the track brings the best out of Isaac Brock and co.
54. The White Stripes - Fell In Love With A Girl
It took The White Stripes three albums before they made it to the mainstream, but only 109 seconds to establish their legacy. Fell in Love With A Girl remains one of the most effective songs to come out of the garage rock wave of the early decade, thanks to its crunchy guitar riff, Jack White’s manic delivery and Michel Gondry’s outstanding music video made out of legos.
53. Lil Wayne - A Milli
Using about half a second of a sample from A Tribe Called Quest, Lil Wayne released his most essential track with A Milli. Ironically, this track, which finds Lil Wayne boasting about the money he got (among other things like… goblins?), was recorded before the release of the also excellent Lollipop, arguably the single that landed him his biggest cheques. Still, Lil Wayne’s expert wordplay and flow on A Milli make that song the true standout from his masterpiece Tha Carter III.
52. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
Anchored by a strong bass guitar and organic humming, Crazy acts as an effective showcase of both Cee-Lo Green’s vocal abilities and Danger Mouse’s unique flair in production. The background voices help to bring a sinister touch to the tune, a vibe that gets cranked up to 11 by the time the strings kick in for the chorus. Yet, for all of its dark twists, Crazy remains arguably the most popular song that any of these two men ever touched, and God knows there have been a few other big tracks with them along the way.
51. Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
Opening one of this era’s most seminal début records in Funerals, the song Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) acts as the perfect introduction to Arcade Fire’s grandiose universe. Collecting steam continually through its nearly five minutes duration, the track culminates in a coda you can easily dance to. Win Butler’s passionate delivery of escapism lyrics elevates the song to give you more chills than any snowstorm will ever do to you.
