neottttt an editor im doing 3 internships rn, one at a literary agency, one directly under a literary agent who owns her own agency, and another with a literary scout, which means i read a bunch of manuscripts and give my opinion on it which is scut aka intern work. ideally i'd like to work towards become an editor at a publishing company but i feel like my career trajectory is leaning towards being an agent

my one advice would be you need publishing experience whether that be an internship or working in bookselling. maybe if you're later in your career you can pivot but only if you can manage to sell yourself and you have transferable skills. publishing is notoriously underworked, underpaid, thankless, and elitist. loving books is not enough to survive here 💀

Boomer humour isn't for me 🤷🏾‍♀️ This isn't exclusively in DIC but the gen z activist trope relies on 'this person cares about social issues & uses the buzzwords point & laugh!!1' and that's just dry and reactionary to me. Basically gen z parody from actual gen z is just >> Ep 4 is the only time Claudia gets some interesting characterisation but it feels backhanded cus she's written as a hysterical illogical teen but now the other characters do too and *now* it's bad? I guess...

Tied to that there's a 'joke' about her saying a list of where gay people are executed is racist & this accusation makes her illogical but its established 1 ep prior Toby *is* racist bc he assumed the South Asian writer was the driver The punchline punches down. Tied onto the weird racism gags I think it bleeds into how the POC in the show have the important role of um... nothing? Morgan gets his screentime writing the joke, balancing racism he experiences as a MOC but how he can reinforce misogyny. But for the WOC? Its crickets.

For a so called feminist show *none* of the WOC play any big role apart from supporting Claudia, Madeline & Sheila in a way. Jenn gets the most w/ her recording but again it's for another character. Minus Bill, Moffat's got a track record of this so I'm not surprised icl 🤷🏾‍♀️This show has parallels to Dot and Bubble. If u know me that is *not* a compliment. It uses comedy & campness as a build up to the-real-issue.mp4 & I'm over this "technique" of "progressive writing" I'd rather focus on the victims/survivors over the people doing the coercion. Moffats aim was allegedly to pull in the right wingers, bait em & switch. Douglas is the MC until its actually Madeline. It just highlights the problem of marginalised stories that decentre marginalised ppl. It relies on the viewer empathising w/ misogyny... from a man's POV...

I wanna like Madeline's plan more but its the set up that stops me from doing so, bc the show insists it needs Douglas as the focus b4 we can care about her. 'Madeline is Struggling' about women's come up in TV wouldn't have slapped for Brexit twitter so instead it's this 🥴

Hope Moffat has a lil self awareness. Is he aware any woman who spoke on the misogyny of his writing was treated as hysterical & illogical as Madeline was? The SA jokes he wrote reinforced the same sexual entitlement of Toby?His stans call him feminist for the bare minimum like the men in Douglas do? That Toby proves being an 'omni bigot' is possible? That unlike Douglas his ism/phobe allegations haven't stopped his bag but ppl that are women/queer/of colour struggle in his same industry? Is he?

The response to this show has what what call The Giggle syndrome (not a compliment). The show/stans demonises its audience. If u critiqued The Giggle dw stans said u had The Giggle. Douglas stans think any critical reaction of the show is cancellation. It gasses itself up.It's a self cleaning cycle. Like Madeline's tweet ironically. Douglas is Cancelled is feminist until it doesn't need to be anymore. Its 'a powerful Me Too commentary' AND just a silly lil show stop cancelling everything haha. Moffat can be progressive until it's hometime.

I'll say something nice: Karen Gillan and Alex Kingston ate down. Nice to see them in non doccy who media. I kinda wished Sheila got less shouty dialogue cus it felt a bit much at times but either way they carried the performances! Lovely gowns beautiful gowns!

Tl:Dr Douglas is Cancelled is *Sheila voice* OK. Its not bad. But it's not groundbreaking either. But it *really* wants to be.

If u want a drama show on themes like Me Too, SA and coercion that's written by women then Clique, I May Destroy You and Mood are right there.

Im the hater anon omg i didnt mean to lead u astray but i haven't finished it i'm just over half done. i probably will finish just so i can coherently say why i don't like it bc rn my thoughts are all over the place but  u hit all the major points im like nodding and taking notes rn.  Its very shallow lore wise like its all overly complex exposition that barely effects the plot. I could write about this for 100 years but basically it was boring and i just feel like it has nothing to say like theres no purpose or message and i think speculative stuff should have SOME weight behind it idk.  That paired w how the writing itself is like..not pretty or artful or anything………………….

And on top of that its not even actually funny. Instead of real jokes its just 100 million mcu quips awkwardly inserted so that no situation is ever treated genuinely or seriously or with depth. For example. My personal least favorite part beyond general quality so far is how often they bring up gideon being inappropriately horny… idk how else to word it.. Its one of her 3 personality traits. they mention her porn collection i swear every couple of pages. its played 4 jokes but like the rest of it its literally unfunny and feels so out of place. Like this is right when they just discovered an incinerated body → ”she looked troubled, which made Gideon sad, but she was also soaked right through to the skin, which made Gideon need a lie-down.” Its like if someone whose only point of reference was tiktok during that era where every vaguely masc woman got made fun of for being a quote hey mamas lesbian unquote tried to write a masc woman.  Reading it as a masc lesbian myself is just sort of embarrassing idk if other ppl feel differently but it just feels overplayed and goofy. 

Anyways… this is all very long and incoherent but thank u for complaining and vindicating me… i started reading it a couple days ago on a whim bc ive been seeing ppl talk abt it a lot lately and i was instantly SOOOOO disappointed. Part of it was definitely that i was expecting something very different because of how people talk about it but also its just like bad. Its insane. the worldbuilding exposition industrial complex needs to end im so serious. I just had such a nice conversation with some writer friends about soft vs hard magic systems and world-building and how frustratingly common the assumption that more complex lore you dump the more sophisticated your story is at the moment. in reality many more sophisticated stories deliberately utilise abstraction and whimsy for thematic statements. v happy for brandon sanderson fans but again, a lot of those stories are basically like mystery novels except the magic is the mystery, whereas the speculative fiction authors who... actually speculate...are often using it as a tool to speculate about our own existence.

and the writing is so ugly like I've read a couple of chapters and I feel like i could get through a mid story if it's at least well written but it wasn't even inoffensive it was actively offputting like that prose was stinkyyyyyyyyy..... and the quips exactlyyy like who is laughing at none pizza with left beef anymore and the fact a lot of it isn't even the author being witty but just like. a reference to a meme? it's literally supposed to be like gritty but then everyone is memeing and quipping all the time how are you meant to take that seriously?

and okay the like sexualisation of Gideon had kind of been my suspicion but I hadn't read enough to make that claim for certain so. that's disappointing to have it confirmed. given that the author is a fem woman who calls herself a lesbian whilst being homestuck married to a guy, it really brings up some kind of discomfort in me to be using masc women that way and making a joke out of them and their sexuality and calling them himbos and shit like. it really doesn't seem like she actually knows any masc women??? and when that was a huge part of the marketing for the book it comes to feel exploitative.

one thing to be aware is that tor like. pushed it really hard marketing-wise for whatever reason. I guess they feel it symbolises a new era of sci-fi and like were using it as an outreach effort to engage the generation that mostly only reads fan fiction or whatever which I guess cheers if it achieves that. but the majority of negative reviews are specifically that it was nothing like what they expected it to be, because of the.... super gimmicky marketing.

the tagline being sword necromancer lesbians in space or something so lame 😭 and it really seems like the elements came first and the justification came second so it's never really explained why they use swords instead of more technologically advanced weapons (bc the answer is 'it sounds cool') or really why it needs to be in space at all (because the answer is 'it sounds cool'). even the necromancy is supposedly fairly tangential and ive seen people be underwhelmed how much actual lesbianism is involved too 💀

I think it's a mix of both. Some groups have genuine friendships with each other and some groups are simply coworkers. Both are fine. As long as they are mature about differences and treat each other with basic respect and decency (literally the bare minimum), then I don't see the issue at all. Being an idol is just a job after all. If they are able to form a genuine connection with a member or all of them, then that's great.

Do I think certain members are meant to be together? No. I don't think anyone is meant to be together tbh. The idea of fated partners and soulmates is cute, but I don't think exists. It works best in fiction. But I know some people's bonds and compatibilities are so strong that it can feel like they were fated and that's totally fine. It's sweet. Even my best friend and I joke about us being meant to be and being "married". And yes I do agree that some ships are definitely pushed more to the public to draw more attention. Some ships may be close, some ships may not be, and we'll never 100% know as we are not those people. If you want my own thoughts on WooSan and SeongJoong though, I do think they're actually close, just not in the way some delulus try to say lol. Yes most likely, I think kpop has often been targeted towards younger audiences. Especially now with so many young people debuting. The industry is saturated and very competitive, so maybe that's why a lot of songs lately are a bit generic and uninspiring. Its heavy use of TikTok I'm sure is just a way to promote and gain attention since it's one of the biggest social media platforms rn. I can't speak much for gidle as I don't follow them...I don't think it's self sabotage though, it just sounds like you are not vibing with their music anymore. Sounds like you are losing interest with kpop in general and that's ok.

Why do you want to wait for someone to ask you out? Why don't you pursue someone? Maybe it's you who has to make the move - don't wait for it. But only if you care that much lol. tbh western pop music is more toxic than kpop. western pop fans have sent me death threats, rape threats, slurs, etc. but kpop fans have never been so cruel. or mean at all. why are people so determined to find flaws in kpop when western celebs do drugs, rape kids, and beat reporters with umbrellas? (or something) tbh its definitely racism and xeniphobia at play.

this is an interesting topic and I have a lot to say about this.

First off, i really really really highly suggest that u refrain from generalizing ppl and society based off of your personal individual experiences. Ur experiences are not universal and not indicative nor reflective of wider society. Doing such a thing could be harmful to both u and others as it can make u close minded and biased. All because u have good experiences with Kpop fans (as u r one) and not so good ones with western fans does not mean either or isn’t or is toxic. Both can be toxic, especially Kpop fans whom I’ve seen endlessly doxxing and sending death threats on twitter. Being a part of a fandom for some reason makes ppl capable of being toxic fans and this doesn’t discriminate by whatever u r a fan of. There are toxic fans in every fandom, especially the Kpop fandoms.

People aren’t determined to see flaws in Kpop; there are literally right there right in front of ur face and are even more apparent for fans of colour. Privilege usually blinds ppl from seeing it. Kpop is a toxic industry in how it runs, its fandoms and its idols. Misogyny, racism (especially antiblackness), colourism, homophobia and cultural appropriation, capitalism, and dehumanization run rampant in kpop’s industry, content and in its idols, both by them and towards them.

First off, the obvious toxic capitalism of the kpop industry. Kpop is EXTREMELY capitalist and dehumanizing in which idols are expected to work to the bone, some for minuscule wages and under oppressive contracts and essentially sell themselves as an image. Not only are many kpop idols overworked to produce as much content as possible for their fans, but their images are completely manufactured. 

Unlike in western pop culture, idols can’t publicly date until they reach a certain age. Some aren’t allowed to drive. Some can’t have private social media accounts. They can’t smoke (which I don’t promote personally but I don’t judge ppl’s choices). They can’t do a lot of things people their age do. Dating and love are human experiences that many people desire to have but in kpop, a “dating scandal” is highly condemned. This is because the kpop indiustry sells these pure images of their idols and not just the music, making them as closely attainable as being your bf/gf as possible but keeping them just out of your reach to make u chase after them. They sell idols’ quirks and personalities and make u fall in love with them with their good manufactured images when really, what u see is not entirely who they truly are. This may be what a lot of us see kpop as a pure industry when really, idols are just pawns in selling the most they can. Idols can be shitty human beings. If they had the freedom to, they would also do drugs and beat ppl that invade their privacy and treat them like toys.

It’s extremely unfortunate that idols have to lose so much freedom just  to achieve their dreams.

(Also, let’s not forget seungri’s scandal; so much corruption lurks beneath the surface. The industry and companies are just good at hiding it). 

what also makes kpop toxic is the antiblackness, misogyny, colourism and racism that continues to be perpetuated, even with basic internet access and international fans’ inputs. “korea not being educated about such” is not really a good excuse. u may not want to see flaws because they most likely don’t affect u but black fans that have to feel the pain of idols saying the n-word, south asian, black and indigenous fans that see their cultures disrespected, LGBTQ+ fans that see idols normalizing homophobia etc. have to deal with those flaws u hate seeing being pointed out. it’s why i have distanced myself from kpop. 

also, let’s be honest. the fandoms can be quite a mess and definitely subject to fetishizing asian men and women which personally makes me sick. 

i don’t deny that western countries are definitely racist and xenophobic to kpop artists and their industry. some of the reactions to BTS in america and how they are regarded and treated are indicative of that. Western countries do think of kpop as “weird” because it’s Asian, and treat idols as their little toys or as jokes (which is honestly gross) however, that isn’t the only reason why it’s criticized. 

every industry has its flaws. you will learn more from acknowledging them than turning a blind eye.

he hates his dad! reason being is bc when he was born, his dad was actually an alien able to disguise himself as human, so he wanted to take red back to his home planet cuz red turned out to be more powerful than anything his dad had ever seen. but red’s mom was like Nope, so she snuck out with him and his plush cat (kitty amazing) and they were never found. red is very close with his mom and is scared of his dad coming back someday

we know blue was bullied as a kid but i dont wanna say red also bullied him bc i feel like thats just wrong to me? ☾ — ·˚ » BASIL CRATES is in saint tropez !! they often get mistaken as KIAN LAWLEY. apparently, HE/THEY is/are the JOCULAR of the group. they’re a TWENTY-ONE year old PANSEXUAL DEMIMALE. i hear they’re known as ALTRUISTIC and DOGMATIC. they also make their living as ART STUDENT / BARTENDER / COMIC BOOK ARTIST but you’d have to ask them a bit more.

BACKGROUND + PERSONALITY.

born and raised in berlin, germany until his mother decided to move to the us when basil was twelve.

despite growing up bilingual, he had difficulties adjusting to the new surroundings and rather spent his free time drawing, eventually building up universes without needing any context and instead having the designs speak for themselves.

after finishing high school at age sixteen basil took a gap year to travel through europe with money they earned from several jobs during school times. bas was v very introverted back then, so it served as a challenge which once again they had difficulties with at first. but ofc you can’t get around without trying, so bas did. he’s still more of an ambivalent than an extrovert, but this journey made him see the beauty of uncertainty and they loved it.

also ik i used he & they in that last paragraph instead of just one bc basil honestly truly doesn’t care which one others use as long as they acknowledge bas isn’t cis bc he’s v open about his gender along with being pan .. but that’s another thing.

basil has a very high iq, but always prevented others from knowing about it. he basically failed tests on purpose back in germany and in the us he always made sure others don’t feel bad about their results and said his were worse even though he probably always got an a+, thus resulting in bas being able to skip two grades.

his mother had to carry two jobs to make a living for the two of them, which was one of the reasons why bas sold his art from a young age. thankfully it was actually decent ( coughs and looks @ ryan reynolds’ twitter ) and ppl actually wanted to pay good money for it. this was also one of the key moments in which bas realized they wanted to have their profession somewhere in the art department.

married his high school sweetheart in las vegas as soon as they both turned eighteen, but divorced just three weeks later. this is just one of their impulsive decisions as bas isn’t much of a planner, they rather have a few good laughs when telling the story ( even for the 10th time ) instead of asking what if. the only thing bas ever truly planned was becoming a comic book artist. they’re still at the very beginning as basil’s v young, but they’re just as determined to make it in the industry.

basil’s mother was always into greek mythology and even gave her child the middle name cerberus, which literally is the most dangerous thing about him and while he’s into mythology himself, he doesn’t really tell anyone his middle name as he’d rather not be compared to a three-headed dog .. but if he ever ends up drunk u can bet he’d insist on being called cerberus and nothing else.

being a comic book artist basil’s an avid comic reader as well, but mostly prefers indie comics as they’re more his kind of humor. speaking of, basil’s more of a morbid humor kind of pal ? but he’ll also immediately apologize if he takes it too far bc he values comfort even more than getting a laugh out of others and himself.

huge fan of dogs, literally the person that points at a dog and says “aw.” and definitely wants to pet them.

the least scorpio-like scorpio you will ever meet, and trust me this is coming from a Real Scorpio™.

ends up in a lot of weird scenarios while just trying their best, but always tries to take it with humor especially if someone’s with them.

most of his friends wouldn’t expect it, but basil’s very romantic, like going all out even for a first date and is probably doing waay too much for his opposite.

just as a small disclaimer: if anyone read girls on fire by robin wasserman, saint’s personality is heavily inspired by one of the characters in it aka lacey. and if u haven’t read it .. pls do it if you’re even just remotely into ya literature.

born and raised in los angeles, us, saint was practially thrown into the lives of the rich and famous. her parents were big in hollywood back in the 80s & 90s and gave those legacies to her.

being practially raised by nannies, saint didn’t really have a connection to her parents till they retired when she was fourteen. from there it was basically always good which is .. v weird but they somehow made it work.

as soon as saint turned eighteen she decided to change her last name to her mother’s maiden name, as she’s never been a fan of women having to give up their names just for being married even if it’s voluntary. this also resulted in her imdb page ( she truly made it huh. ) being “divived” into saint bartowski ( also shoutout @ anyone who gets this ref ) and saint deveraux.

at age eighteen saint also let out her true self, at least towards her parents. she admitted to worshipping lucifer just to piss them off and see how they’d react, it was just a game for her. but to be as convincing as possible, she did the most, even though she would’ve already had them just with her words, but saint always wanted to know just how far she could take it.

to the public she’s seen as this socialite turned actress who never did anything wrong, but just due to her parents and herself keeping everything under a neat little rug.

saint’s a very passionate person and loves to be surrounded or admired by people, but at the same time she doesn’t really care about anyone, no matter how many i love yous she’s going to whisper into someone’s ear or no broken promises ever.

as a result of the press putting labels onto her 24/7 she resents them. the only one she’ll ever claim is being in the lgbtq+ com as it’s basically the only thing in her life she truly cares about besides acting and her cats. however saint also makes a lot of fun of men and highly prefers females and nb pals for .. u know what.

she can also be extra af as she literally bought an old vw t1 bus in st. tropez for the short amount of time she’s there and have it look exactly like the one she has back in la with the pride flag sprayed on its roof and every little sticker/detail on its doors, etc.

getting to her job .. she currently stars in a made up netflix show that’s somewhere between veronica mars, twin peaks and 21 jump street ( the movie version ). i actually made a whole filmography for her but i’m too lazy for graphics and i’m not even sure whether i can use real movies/shows so oo. but if u want a list i can tots send it via disc*rd ( btw mine is artcmis#4377 ). and just know that she admires amber heard and mostly chooses roles like her aka not the damsel in distress. tho she would def love to save that kind of character one day .. js.

Its press secretary suggested liberal TV stars suffered no consequences for saying “the most horrible things” about President Donald Trump.

Disney is the parent company of ABC TV network, which on Tuesday dropped the rebooted ’90s sitcom “Roseanne” amid a ferocious online backlash against its star.

At the White House daily press briefing, the president’s spokeswoman, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, expanded on Mr Trump’s tweet.

“The president pointed to the hypocrisy in the media saying the most horrible things about this president and nobody addresses it,” said Mrs Sanders.

She said Mr Iger did not say sorry for ESPN presenter Jemele Hill calling Mr Trump a white supremacist. Disney also owns ESPN, a sports channel.

“This is a double standard that the president is speaking about,” Mrs Sanders concluded, “no one is defending her [Barr’s] comments, they’re inappropriate.”

At the end of the news conference, one reporter shouted: “Where is the president’s apology for the things he’s said over the years?”
