As we head into the last few nights of Chanukah, and especially with tonight being Shabbat Chanukah, and observant Jews not using electricity for the next 24 hours, more than ever it's a wonderful time for evening family storytimes after the candles are lit and tummies are full of yummy treats. I was put in mind of Gretchen M. Everin's adorable new Chanukah "mystery" picture book the other night when my own dear friend @stuff_you_knead made a delicious-looking "Kugel for Hanukkah?" (2019), LOL. With the sweetest illustrations by Rebecca Ashdown, this story follows our narrator and her grandmother's seemingly inexplicable Chanukah gifts each night, as each night she wishes for a pet that doesn't come. But could something more be going on here? Kids will have fun staying one step ahead and guessing what's happening. One of the things I love about exploring different aspects of religious and cultural traditions through books is that there is room for non-fiction as well. In Allison Ofanansky's "Harvest of Light" (2008), we get to learn about the olive harvest in Israel through a young girl's participation in her family's traditions, how olive oil is made, and how all of this connects to the Chanukah holiday.
