gonna throw some tomatoes at jim rutherford in this post 🍅🍅🍅 it’s kind of a long one (albeit definitely not my longest) so, content below the cut 😭

i think it’s kind of crazy that we keep being told that rutherford has won cups working in management and he always has a plan/something up his sleeve/he’s ruthless but gets results and that’s why we’re lucky to have him at the helm, when in so much of what we’ve seen from him he just comes across like an old man who has himself on such a pedestal that he doesn’t even bother censoring what he says in case it comes back to make him look bad lol.

he was so confident the canucks would have a practice arena location imminently when he got here, then learned that it was more difficult than he’d though.

he was convinced that miller/pettersson, whose relationship had never been great, would be perfectly fine for almost another full decade if he re-signed them both, then acted shocked when that didn’t turn out to be the case.

he wasn’t eager to re-sign brock because brock wanted too much term, then he realized he’s not going to land a better goal-scorer and keeps trying to crawl back now that it’s too late.

he let his coach/general manager (and himself) shit talk his 1C for a year, then realized that’s not what the player best responds to and we’ve since seen a notable shift in how the organization discusses him publicly post-tocchet.

he confidently announced that we’d be adding a second-line centre as well as 1-2 other top 6 forwards, and might have addressed everything so well in trades that we wouldn’t even need to sign UFAs, then realized the market wasn’t what he thought it would be.

then, then, then. like, it wouldn’t be AS BIG of a thing if he didn’t so boldly and confidently share his plans and desires, but when he does that and then fails to follow-through, he actively looks like he’s not capable of executing his vision.

and allvin isn’t innocent either btw, he just doesn’t have the same degree of pedigree as rutherford and isn’t revered quite as much by the media.

like, is jim rutherford better than jim benning? yeah, sure, but that isn’t exactly a high bar 😭 and so much of the interpersonal BS he’s caused to flare up — starting with treating boudreau like shit, mind you — has imo made his other mistakes just that much more aggravating.

and it’s not like he’s just been innocently watching as things fall apart around him. i don’t gaf if he thinks that his two players should have just kissed and made up — clearly things were untenable, but he waited months before actually acting, while the locker room degraded and started to negatively affect/distract more and more players. and that’s not even getting into the importance of a healthy environment — management is ultimately responsible for that, and if a relationship degrades so significantly and irreparably without one player being undeniably at fault (and, according to rutherford, neither carried more blame…), then i’m not sure how more fingers don’t get pointed to the environment that allowed said relationship to fracture so much more than previously.
