I just saw a photo of "What persona. Dick Grayson isn't a mask. Not like Bruce Wayne is" from Detective Comics #725 and I find it interesting that Dick and the rest of the bats, with the exception of Bruce, don't wear "masks" per se. They are who they are with or without the domino mask/helmet. The only time I can really think of Dick faking things is when he pretended to be an incompetent BPD cop. How was he able to avoid creating and living, half the time, through a "persona" like "Brucie"?

Oooh, this is a lovely, meaty question.  There’s a lot more analysis of Bruce than I planned because let’s be real, it’s kinda weirder for a guy to run around with half a dozen personas than for someone else to run around as himself.  I hope you still find it interesting, but if you want to skip straight to the more Dick-centric stuff, head under the readmore.

A simple but significant factor is that Dick thrives on the company of people in a way that Bruce does not.  I suspect if you talk honestly to many introverts, you will find they too have an extroverted ‘mask’ they put on to the larger world, though probably not quite so extreme.

Another factor is that the civilian social circles Dick and Bruce travel in are vastly different.  Though they each have a reason for being in those circles, that difference itself enables Dick to escape much of the scrutiny that Bruce’s public identity undergoes, because he doesn’t frequently associate with the much more media-hounded elite.

An interesting thing here is that the large difference in social circles between their civilian lives is actually caused by their own personal similarities: they are 100% committed work-a-holics.  It’s just that they have differing civilian approaches to their goals.

I want to start with Bruce because as you point out, his use of persona is distinct among the bats and his reasons for using them in part explain why Dick and the other bats do not.

Bruce is a child of privilege, he has always lived a lifestyle of privilege, regardless of the tragedies that have occurred during it, and his default view of the world, through no fault of his own, is natively that of the extreme upper class.  This drastically influences his perspective and approach to change, and changing the world is his perpetual goal, the reason he put on the suit in the first place.

Bruce works a top-down society approach toward systemic change, and he works it all the time.  This is actually my favorite but woefully under-emphasized part of him: he is not just someone who punches people on the street ‘for justice’, he uses his company, his money, and his social position toward substantial systemic change. This post does a wonderful job covering the ways he does this through his corporations and personal wealth, as does this one.  I cannot recommend either enough because I constantly want to push even the most casual Batman fans to understand: Bruce Wayne is not just a violent punchy puncher man.  He is a traumatized person genuinely trying to use all his resources including himself to make the world safer.

Detective Comics #725

Bruce has many personas he maintains, and he uses all of them according to what suits his need--Batman for places the law can’t go, Bruce Wayne the CEO pushing for systemic changes, Matches Malone for street information, and Brucie the society high roller for society information and social influencing.  He is rarely ever not in a persona and simply ‘Bruce’.

His top-down perspective of enacting change are what dictated the usage and necessity of these personas. He has the means and capacity to basically disappear from society if he so chose--he in fact does so to train during his younger years so successfully they don’t even know how long he was actually gone. 

The Batman Files

So he doesn’t need the personas.  Not Bruce Wayne, CEO, or Brucie, or any of them really, to protect his identity.  That tells us that Brucie is a deliberate choice he made at some point.  He could have been a recluse billionaire Batman indefinitely.  Even though he fully has the status and means to not maintain a job or a persona or, let’s be frank, a life outside the mask at all, it’s his own work-a-holicness that led to the creation of his public personas.  He’s an obsessive strategist, so if Brucie is a choice, that leads us to why?

Bruce does many philanthropic things with his money, but he isn’t the only rich person around, especially not in a city as old and corrupt as Gotham.   But he’s one of the very few ones doing good with it.

The comic you mentioned has a very beautiful moment where Bruce touches on that, and in full context you can feel how consumed he is by this goal of creating the Gotham his parents would have wanted.  Batman mentions he never sees himself in that place, and the morbid interpretation is that the city kills him before he reaches it, but the hopeful interpretation is that in that shining city, Bruce Wayne and Batman and Brucie and all his masks will no longer be needed.

Detective Comics #725

Back in the old days they’d call it noblesse oblige: the inferred responsibility of privileged people to act with generosity and nobility toward those less privileged. Thomas and Martha Wayne ingrained this feeling of responsibility into Bruce by example, and as all things related to them, he obsesses over it.  It urges him to fulfill expectations within segments of society he finds onorous for the betterment of society as a whole in order to carry out their unfinished works.

Enter Brucie.

Brucie serves a two-fold purpose.  Since Bruce has chosen to maintain personas among society, it becomes a false face to justify any oddities Batman might bring into the life of Bruce Wayne by setting himself up as a eccentric, popular social scion.  But that persona itself also allows him to manipulate the upper crust of society.

I have some insider perspective on the kind of society events Brucie attends.  They’re all about the who’s who of making connections, name-dropping and networking, and unspoken class-based elitism.  Charity events among the upper class have these things at the forefront and the cause is the background.  You don’t get your hands dirty, you don’t go out and make change yourself, you pay money to be socially seen and sometimes it happens to go towards a philanthropic cause.  If you want to raise money from the rich and keep people with deep pockets coming in the door, you have to have social currency yourself. This is where, and why, Brucie comes in.  I believe Brucie ws crafted to maintain Batman’s cover but still attempt to carry on his parents’ legacy to grease the wheels of the rich in the directions he chooses: one of generosity towards those less privileged. 

Superman/Batman #51

The inevitable flaw of Bruce’s approach to his personas and their philanthropy is that in a city rife with corruption, money distributed from the top has many opportunities to disappear well before it reaches the bottom.  As in many of ways they are complements to each other, Dick’s approach balances that out, because his approach to helping his fellow man starts out at the street level...literally.

Nightwing #153 (Nightwing: The Great Leap)

Dick, we know, does not come from privilege.  His mother was from a middle class family before she joined the circus, and despite being world famous athletes, most circus workers are lower to middle class.  The people he grew up with, was comfortable with, were all working folk who expected everyone to pull their weight right alongside each other.  He enacts this everyone-together approach in almost all aspects and phases of his life. 

Batman #615

Even once he had settled into being Robin and adapted to living at the manor, he didn’t feel belonging to a culture of privilege, materialism, or high society. He preferred shotgun in the limo to chat with the driver to riding fancy in the back.  Once he was able to start making his own decisions about where and how he lived, despite having both Bruce’s money and then later inheriting a substantial amount of his own, he chose mostly lower-class communal places.

Batman Black and White #6

Dick also doesn’t see the value of throwing money at a problem when there is an option to fix it with his own hands.  We see this frequently, from building his own car instead of buying a finished one or outsourcing the work, to deciding the best way to clean out the BPD was to start at the bottom and work his way up (literally), to quitting college because his classes never got prioritized over crimesolving.  Most of his day jobs ended for similar reasons. 

Nightwing #153 (Nightwing: The Great Leap)

Despite the showmanship training, he gravitates away from spotlight on the rich and wealthy, who are notoriously the kind of people who do not get their hands dirty or go out and take care of things themselves, and prefers to find or build communities around the kind of people who do.

Finally, Dick is an extrovert.  He doesn’t need to act extroverted as Brucie does because he is extroverted.  He likes people and likes being around people.  Whether by conscious choice or not, he tends to put himself in situations where he is surrounded by people in nearly all aspects of his life.  He chooses apartment buildings whose occupants frequently pass each other on the stairs; jobs that involve interacting with many co-workers, patrons, or students; and collects superhero teammates like Boy Scout badges.  And all of these behaviors come very naturally to him.  

He doesn’t need a mask or a role or a persona for those kind of interactions; his mask is pre-supplied as “neighbor” or “co-worker” or “teacher” by the situations he puts himself in.  It helps make him an exemplary leader, because just by acting authentically to himself, he automatically builds up little communities around him any time he arrives somewhere.

Bruce, on the other hand, is an introvert.  For him, interacting with people isn’t easy, automatic, or comfortable unless it has a purpose, but as a strategist, he knows the necessity of human interaction as a catalyst to achieving dynamic change. So he adapts personas to suit people’s expectations.  Extroverts have more social currency; the life of the party can generate more resources than a brooding wallflower.  

So, it boils down to just a few elements: Dick believes in living and interacting at the street level to accomplish the things that he wants to, and he is extroverted enough that the level of social interaction that entails is not a burden to him.  He surrounds himself with the types of people he is more familiar or perhaps more comfortable with, which happens to keep him further out from the media’s eye than associating with the upper crust does. The lower profile is more incidental than intentional, but it lessens his need to have a cover story for every single bruise and lets him get away with even less of a ‘persona’.

Bruce, on the other hand, is introverted and follows a more classist view that systemic change needs to be effected from the top down.   His personas are more of a self-assumed duty than a necessity, as a way of trying to carry out his parents’ legacy.  Any of his children could have chosen to follow his path in business or the high society limelight, but the sense of obligation toward it is something personal to him that most of them don’t share.

Weeks passed since you met Ivar and there wasn’t a day that him didn’t cross your mind. You know he had your number, but you didn’t stop asking yourself why he didn’t call you yet, or even just sent a fucking message. Anxiety was literally getting the best from you. You didn’t sleep peacefully, you just ate the enough to keep your body standing, the boy literally got you obsessed right in the first meeting.

“Hey! I’m talking to you” Laila said to you.

“What?” you asked focusing on her presence for the first time in the night.

“God, were you even listening to me?” she asked.

“Sorry,” you mumbled. “What were you trying to say?” you said.

“Forget it. Why are you acting strange those days?” she asked.

You took a long breath before saying, “Remember that ridiculous handsome man that came here one of those days?”

She nodded and you continued, “When you went away he offered to drive me home and I accepted-”

“Are you fucking crazy? He could be a damn psycho, you could be dead by now! Doesn’t your mother talked about not talking to strangers?”

You rolled your eyes at her reaction, ignored and continued talking “We talked a lot meanwhile and I don’t know, I feel like I already know him for ages. Does it makes sense?”

“Y/N, don’t lie to me, are you using any type of drug?” Laila asked genuinely worried,

“What? No!” you said like that was obvious.

“So you’re saying that you fell in love for a man that you just saw once?”

Once your mind processed her words, you understood why you couldn’t think in anything else but Ivar. God, you were in love with him and you knew so little from him, yet if it was needed you would do anything for him.

“I’m such a dumbass sometimes,” you said hiding your face in the palm of your hands.

“I wouldn’t say sometimes, my dear, but I got your point.” Laila said clearly trying to light up the mood.

“Hey,” she said holding your hands. “This guy would be a dickhead if he didn’t call you, maybe he’s just busy with work, I don’t know. Give him a time,” she continued.

“Do you think so?” you asked.

She nodded before saying, “Now put on a fake smile in your gorgeous face because soon this place will be crowded.”

God, you wished she was wrong. But that night looked like you were serving the entire population of your city, so when the time came you were happy that you were going home. You said goodbye to Laila and started making your way to the subway station when suddenly a black jaguar stopped at your side. You would ignore it if the person inside didn’t honk at you.

You looked at the car and before you ask yourself what the fuck was happening, the window rolled down and you saw the man that was hunting down your thoughts smiling at you.

“Hi Ivar,” you said.

He didn’t answer you, he just opened the door of the passenger side for you and you glady entered his car.

“Hi gorgeous,” he said.

You looked at him hesitantly you didn’t know what you should do next, kiss him in the cheek, hug him or whatever. Glady Ivar lead the way when he came closer to you and kissed the very corner of your mouth. You thought you would faint right when his scent overflowed your senses, his presence was so strong that just the simple act made your heart beat faster.

“I thought you’d call me,” you said.

Ivar noticed the hint of sadness and maybe neediness in your voice.

“I know I should’ve done this but life went crazy and I just came back from Italy,” he said like Italy was the closest neighbourhood.

“And why are you here? Shouldn’t you be resting?” you asked.

“Indeed I should but I needed to see you,” he said.

“Ivar-”

“During the trip there wasn’t a fuckin day that I didn’t think of you. Fucking hell, I even dreamed of you,” he continued.

And then you let it go. The next thing you remember was that you kissed Ivar. You touched his lips with yours, pulling him closer to you by his coat, you melted when you felt how plump and soft were his lips. And God, they felt amazing against yours.

Honestly, you didn’t want that precious moment to end, you wished that the world have stopped just for the two of you. Ivar managed to bite your bottom lip what made you moan and giving him space to guide his tongue inside your mouth. His tongue danced with your for what felt like hours. When breathing became a necessity you broke the kiss.

“Yeah, I’ve been wanting to do this too,” he said smiling.

“I wish things were different,” you said feeling guilty, because even that Ivar didn’t love his wife he still had a compromise to her and owned her fidelity.

“Trust me, me too,” he said and caressed your cheek lightly. “Can I take you to a special place now?” he asked.

“You can take me anywhere you want,” you said.

You saw Ivar’s eyes shining with excitement before he said, “I’ll keep that in mind.”

As you two made your way to God knows where, you keep talking to him and little by little Ivar revealed to be even more interesting.

Suddenly Ivar stopped at the most isolated spot of the most beautiful park. He guided you to one of the benches and opened his arms to you. You nestled between his arms and sighed happily once his arms envolved your body. Again, you felt like your body fitted his perfectly. Your head was right over his shoulders and he was caressing your arms.

You two stayed in silence for a long time, it wasn’t the uncomfortable type of silence, actually it was just a relaxing moment. You two were observing the full moon that brighten beautifully in the sky.

“Can I ask you something?” you asked once the curiosity took the best of you.

“Anything,” he answered immediately.

“Why did you marry her?” you asked.

You felt Ivar shifting in his place and taking a deep breath before answering, “I needed to marry her. Basically, it was for the sake of my family’s business. We were almost broke because one of our projects with parisian partners didn’t work out. My father knew her father and he asked for some money, you know like a loan, and he said that he could literally give the money if I married her daughter. She used to have a crush on me since, well, always and then I’m here stuck in this failed marriage.”

“Did you try to make it work?” you asked.

“At first, yes. She’s beautiful after all but it turned awfully. She’s disgusting, isn’t the type of woman I’d like to grow old with,” he started. “And that’s why I’m doing the impossible to save all the money her father gave to our company so I can get rid of her,” he continued.

“Sounds like a good plan,” you said smiling.

“I don’t imagine why you like so much,” he said cynically and then he kissed your neck making a shiver pass through your body.

“What about me Ivar? What do I mean to you?” you asked cautiously.

“A fresh new start. The start of something great, of a happy life maybe. I hope we’re in the same page,” he said.

You got out of his embrace and turned your eyes to him, “Maybe it sounds insane but I don’t think that’s anything that would make me more happy.”

“Maybe it sounds a bit insane, but I couldn’t care less,” he said.

He guided his hands to your waist and he pulled you closer, until there was no space between your bodies. He kissed you softly this time, like he was savouring you. Your hands found his neck and you melted on his arms. Before you could think coherently you were straddling him, rolling your hips against his crotch and gaining from him a few grunts. You could felt him getting harder against you and you knew you were getting wetter too.

“Ivar,” you mewled.

“I want you,” he said with his eyes darker overflowing lust.

“I’m yours,” you said.

And then his phone started ringing interrupting that beautiful moment.

“I’m sorry I have to-”

“It’s okay,” you said.

“Hi Ragnar,” he said.

You watched Ivar for probably the hundred time and honestly, you could spent entire days looking at his gorgeous features.

“Yeah, I’m on my way,” he said and then he hung up.

“Any problem?” you asked.

“Yes, my mother is the hospital, more precisely she’s in a coma,” he said.

“I’m sorry Ivar,” you said.

“I gotta go,” he said.

“Yeah of course,” you said getting up.

Even that you tried to reason with Ivar that you could catch an Uber, he insisted in driving you home and you made a mental note that it was useless discussing with him.

You gave him a soft kiss before you entering your home and as soon that you closed the door you heard his car engine speeding up.

Message me if you want. You texted him genuinely concerned about him and his mother.

On that night you couldn’t find any sleep and you spent the entire night looking at your phone but Ivar didn’t send you one message. You were about to finally sleep when your phone started ringing. It was him.

“Hey,” you said softly.

“What’s your blood type?” he asked.

“AB why?” you asked.

“My mother needs a blood donation and you have the same blood type,” he said.

“Okay, I’m catching an uber. Message me with the hospital address,” you said hanging up.

You quickly took your PJ’s off and wore literally the first clothes you landed your eyes at before catching an Uber and going to the hospital to meet Ivar. What a good way to be introduced to his family, you thought to yourself.

“Here we go,” you said once you entered the hospital. Deep inside you were with a bad feeling. But you ignored your anxiety and made your way anyways.

As if going to school wasn’t boring enough on its own, Mother Nature decided to give us a rainstorm today. Thankfully the MTA station was not only directly in front of my apartment building, but also outside of where my class was being held for the day. Allowing me to avoid being completely drenched from the torrential downpour. 

I didn’t mind the forecast too bad, I actually love storms. However, I enjoy them the most while I’m at home watching from the comfort of my own bed, using it as white noise to take a nap. Yet here I sit in my uncomfortable plastic seat watching droplets race each other down the glass window while a professor fifty feet away speaks gibberish into a microphone. 

My class this morning was of course, one of my least favorites. Not that I hated it due to being difficult, only because I knew practically everything already and I could teach the class better than the professor himself. So, for entertainment before I passed out from pure boredom, I decided to occupy myself by texting Mathew after his morning practice had ended. 

Similar to how he is in person, he was great with holding a conversation. In fact, I almost forgot I was even in class. He decided to explain more in depth on his life back home in Vancouver, telling me about his parents, sister and even about their dogs that he’s apparently terrified of. I was so invested in the stories he was telling that as he was confessing some embarrassing ones, I accidentally let out a giggle that I had to quickly cover with a fake cough to not disrupt the class. Although I couldn’t trick the people closely surrounding me as I had a permanent smile plastered on my face that my hand couldn’t even hide. 

As much as I could through text, I made my potential feelings towards him obvious as he did the same for I, but after last night I couldn’t help but worry if this would work out or not. The money from nannying was the only thing covering my student loans and necessities. I was living on my own in one of the most expensive cities as a full time student. I’m fortunate enough that my distant family owned my current apartment and allowed me to reside there as long as I maintained at the very least a 3.8 GPA. However the cost of my loans, food, transportation, miscellaneous bills and school supplies were a lot to handle and nannying was the only thing flexible enough for my schedule. 

Class finally released and I made my way back to the subway with only getting slightly wet from the rain. It was torturous underground as the fahrenheit was roughly around 50° and the humidity still found a way to crawl under my skin. Once on the train I took a corner seat next to the exit while a business man in a suit relaxed on my right. 

My phone vibrated which I had assumed was Mathew, but to my surprise Rebecca’s name had appeared at the top of the screen accompanied by a glowing ‘slide to answer’ bar across the bottom. My heart started pounding through my chest wondering if Dennis had mentioned the event from last night. My mind imagining the worst case scenario of her telling me I can’t talk to him anymore or even worse, having them fire me. 

“Hello?” I spoke nervously into the line after subconsciously sliding the white call circle with my thumb. 

“Cassie! I️ hope you’re doing well!” She responded excitedly. I released an agonizing breath once hearing the positive tone she was using. She’s not the type to be passive, she’s one of those people where if she was upset or disappointed, she would let it be known. 

“I’m pretty good, how are you?” I answered sweetly, now beginning to question why she would be calling mid-day like this. 

“I’m wonderful, and I️ would be even better if you could do me a huuuge favor.” She suggested. Nine times out of ten this meant she needed me to babysit with short notice. However, the unusual part was she normally texts me instead of calling.

“Yeah of course, anything for you guys!” I replied joyfully. I could definitely use the extra money with the holidays slowly creeping in. Plus, I couldn’t help but still be curious if Dennis had spilled the beans yet or not, and the only way to find out was to see them face to face. 

“Can you sit the kids tonight? Dennis and I️ want to have a little date night before the season starts. Mat said he’s going out with a friend but I trust you more anyway. I’m sure you probably have plans tonight but I️ figured it was worth a shot.” She explained. 

‘Mat said he’s going out with a friend.’ 

Immediately I knew that I was ‘the friend’ since we had planned for him to come check out my lonely apartment tonight. I was bummed that I would have to cancel, but my job and income will always come first. I’m sure Mathew would understand, and if he didn’t then that would be enough verification for me to end whatever relationship we have anyway. 

“No problem at all, I’ll be there!” I confirmed enthusiastically, now exiting the train that was at my stop. I covered my vacant ear with my index finger to better my hearing as I have now joined the exorbitant amount of people on the staircase back to ground level. 

“Oh my gosh you are literally the best. Be here by six?” She requested. I looked down at my watch and the hands sat on the twelve and two. This gave me plenty of time to get ready before catching the LIRR in time to make it there. 

“I’ll see you then.” I confirmed before we said our goodbyes and hung up the phone. 

Once returning to the comfort of my warm and dry apartment, I opened a text message to send to Mathew explaining the cancellation of our plans for the night. 

Cassandra: “I’m sincerely sorry I️ have to cancel tonight. Rebecca needs me to watch the kids so they can go on a date. I️ figured it’s the least I️ could do after upsetting Dennis last night.” 

I pressed the send button and a little pit in my stomach started to grow. I was disappointed. I was highly anticipating hanging with him and getting to know him on a more personable level. But maybe being alone at my apartment was too quick at the moment anyway. I guess having a simple restaurant date first wouldn’t hurt. 

It wasn’t long before I felt a vibration from the device in my hand. His name playing across the screen directly underneath the time. I wasted no time before entering my passcode and revealing the message. 

Mathew: “Don’t worry about it I️ understand. Besides, now that I’m not going anywhere tonight, that means we get to watch the kids together ;)” 

As if Dennis wasn’t skeptical enough, there was no way he was going to be enthusiastic about the two of us alone with the kids. Although, this could be the perfect opportunity to prove to him that I can maintain self control. Let’s just hope it’s the second one. 

It was now a quarter till six and of course, it was still raining. I quickly sprinted to the porch where I could be protected from the precipitation. I rang the bell and it was only a matter of seconds before Rebecca opened the door, completely taking my breath away with her appearance. Wherever Dennis was planning on taking her tonight was clearly going to be elegant. 

Once entering into the foyer the three kids, already dressed in their pajamas, ran up and attached to my legs. Giggles echoing through the large house as I tried to keep my balance. It warms my heart every time they do this. It doesn’t matter how much time we spend together or the short amount of time from when I last saw them. I was basically just an older sibling to them. Even the parents watched in awe as they saw the genuine joy pour out of their children.

“Alright, alright. We know you’re excited but try not to break her legs.” Rebecca recommended causing them to ease off my legs that way I could stand normal again. Dennis then appeared from the hallway handing Rebecca her purse. Nervous, I felt my body begin to sweat as I was still unsure of where we stood. 

“Since it’s raining, no going outside. Also, there may be no school tomorrow, but you still have to be in bed by eight. Deal?” Dennis acknowledged the kids. They all nodded their heads before running off to the game room down the hall, instructing me to follow them. Before I went with them I turned to Rebecca as she usually has some sort of instructions to give me for the night. 

“They’ve already eaten so no need to feed them tonight. If they start asking for ice cream, no problem, just make sure it’s before seven. You pretty much know the deal.” She explained while grabbing her umbrella and walking into the garage, entering their car. I nodded my head in agreement.

“You can’t do this around the kids.” I whispered anxiously to Mat.  

“I️ can’t hug you? Come on it’s not like we’re sticking our tongues down each other’s throats.” He instigated. I rolled my eyes and ignored his comment. Moving out of his touch and beginning to tidy up the kitchen once again.

“Oh no, not hugging. Only married people do that.” Mat snidely joked. I scuffed behind him as I struggled with my attempt to push him towards the door. I got him halfway there before he decided to bend his knees and lay all of his weight onto my arms, his head falling to my shoulder.

“Oh no, my knees gave out. Looks like you’re going to have to carry me.” Mathew played as I used all my strength to keep both him and I from falling over. All while trying to keep my laughing to a minimum so he couldn’t hear. 

“I️ came here to babysit them, not you!” I teased finally getting him to the basement door. Yet, he didn’t let off any of his weight. 

“I’ll go down on one condition.” He then added, turning his head that was still on my shoulder towards my face, where his nose now tickled my cheek. 

“You have to join me down there once the kids go to sleep.” He whispered so low to the point I almost didn’t hear it. 

This sent me into a whirlwind of thoughts. I wouldn’t have to worry about the kids seeing, since they’re the best sleepers ever and never come out of their rooms. Plus, it's always quiet and lonely after they’re asleep. I normally just sit on the couch and watch TV anyway. Dennis told me to head home after they were all in bed, but staying another couple of minutes couldn’t hurt right? Especially since they were expected to come home late. It sounded almost foolproof. 

“Ugh my legs!” Mat said, clearly becoming impatient for my answer, as he leaned even more weight onto me.

While they love the shiny new device they seem to strongly oppose at every junction the very things it takes to create it, a sort of strange cognitive dissonance or maybe just a lack of desire to understand.

They ignore the fact that it was mining, the dirty task of digging up the earth to extract her treasures, which brought up the silver, gold, palladium and steel required to build the circuitry.

Let me say this. I would love to be able to have the house of my dreams without having to pay for it. I’d love a cabin in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, with a view overlooking the valley but only minutes from town so it’s not inconvenient for me to make trips to the grocery store (who would work as a grocer if money didn’t exist and everything was free, I don’t know. I sure wouldn’t, but maybe there is someone who sees that as their passion, so let’s assume that’s the case).

Now, the question becomes (and I’m genuinely looking for the answer) who will build my cabin? (Let’s ignore my car, or the trucks and cranes it takes to erect the structure, the raw materials and forging of hammer and nails, the lumber and sawmills that turn it into useable material). I certainly cannot build it. I am lucky I know a handful of people who can, but would they spend months or years of their time building me a home for nothing? How about all the thousands (dare I say millions or billions worldwide) of others who would want the same as me?

I mean, if it’s free (and we assume that no one will be greedy and want two homes, or the best views for themselves) you can guarantee that everyone will want the best home. In a world where all houses and apartments are equal in value, who is going to stay in a rundown neighborhood?

If it’s free, why not have all free modern houses on large lots, with all the modern amenities, million-dollar homes for everyone?

For the sake of simplicity let’s ignore the idea that billions of people would only want top of the line furniture, appliances, electronics, automated systems, etc. And we will ignore how the innovation came about to make those top of the line items. We will also ignore the amount of raw materials, mining, and refining that would be needed for each family to have these items as well as why on Earth anyone would do those jobs of mining and refining when they could be an artist or video game player and have all the same benefits in home, car, and luxuries of life. Why would I show up for work if I worked in a dirty mine where I know I’m putting my health on the line? I wouldn’t even if you paid me, but thankfully there are some people who would.

But for now, let’s ignore those realities.

Let’s just say you would mandate by law that everyone must put in a certain amount of hours per week in their certain trade. Thus, production continues as it would today. Why would the upcoming generation pick oil work in the frozen tundra of Northern Canada or the insanely remote and scorched regions of the Middle East? Why do that when you could opt instead to be a dog walker and still live in millionaire luxury? We would likely see a much greater skills shortage than we already see today.

See, I wish it were possible, I really do. I wish socialism was the opportunity for promised utopia they claim it is and that all those dreams would come true.

I wish I could do my degree for free (though the supply of certain desirable degrees would absolutely overwhelm the need for people skilled in those fields) and live in the luxury enjoyed by the 100-hour work week entrepreneurs, or investment bankers and stock brokers.

I wish we could have a world where there was no reason to pursue monetary gain, where we could have a lavish lifestyle and all that we want and need while working only on the things we want to, but unless someone can come up with some ingenious way to ensure we can provide even more, resource wise, without needing people to do dirty work that they don’t like, it’s just another nice daydream.

I still don’t know who would consider spending weeks away from family in the far flung frozen north to extract oil to be their “passion.” Or who would work cabling a new building for internet service because that’s just what they’ve always dreamed of. Who would take customer complaints at the electric or phone company? Those are roles that deserve higher reward if you ask me. There is nothing wrong with those noble professions, but they are far from the likely more glamorous roles many of us would choose to play without the necessity being present.

Human nature is still now, as it always has been, something that must be contended with. I have good news and bad news.

First, the good news: Americans’ net worth has grown over the last 10 years, topping out at an average of about $200,000 for all demographics in 2014. If you’ve been financially savvy, you’re already there—or at least well on your way.

Now the bad news: That equity is increasingly less valuable. Beyond giving you credit advantages, it offers little possibility for sales returns later in life (or for family after your pass away).

Here’s why:

Most of those who have worked long enough to gain any net worth at all (usually ages 35+) have invested in things that are becoming outdated, unnecessary, or altogether obsolete. It’s also harder for up-and-coming professionals to afford. Here’s a closer look:

While cost of living is increasing—well beyond amounts expected for inflation—salaries aren’t keeping pace.

More money is being sunk into expensive technology (smartphones, tablets, computers, home electronics, Internet of Things devices, and so on). That technology, almost by definition, loses value very quickly as innovation soars and new technologies enter the market.

Younger generations aren’t buying homes; they’re renting their whole lives or investing in lower-cost condo properties. That means the single-family homes of older generations stay on the market for longer—sometimes even years. The final sales cost often does not give home-owners measurable return on their initial investment.

The sharing economy has made certain once-were necessities no longer a given. Instead of purchasing a car, for example, many people now lean on services like car2go, ZipCar, Lyft, and Uber.

Let’s do the math on this. Let’s say you buy a brand-new Volkswagen Jetta for a cool $19,000. Here’s your investment over three years:

According to Kelly Blue Book, you’re likely to get 70% of that in a sale. That leaves you with about $7,500 in meaningful equity. And you paid $22,390.

Compare this to ride-sharing. CreditKarma recently crunched the numbers on this and came up with some interesting numbers: Given Americans’ average social trips in a year, they estimate that ride-sharing will cost you $4,000 yearly if you use it “casually”—that is, not every time you leave your house/apartment.

That’s $12,000 in three years, which is a heck of a lot less than $22,390. And sure, you have no equity to speak of, but you also don’t have the hassle of car maintenance, gas costs, parking, and other random car fees (tolls, licensing, tags, etc.).

But there’s more to this decision than simple math. Younger professionals are keenly interested in lowering their carbon footprint, living in urban areas with better public transportation, and saving their money for experiences—not things.

Is it any wonder Millennials have set a new norm for a non-car-owning generations?

Business wardrobe

You may think that younger generations spend more money on clothing than America ever has. But that’s simply not true. According to some sources, clothing doesn’t even fit into household budgets anymore, while younger demographics are spending $50 less per month than older shoppers.

As mentioned above, spending for Millennials and Gen Zers leans more on experiences—dining out, music, theater, and so on—than it does on material goods like clothing. There are two reasons for this. One, the social dominance of today’s culture highly values experiences—and the ability to document them for social cachet. That’s not to say there isn’t genuine interest in new adventures, but the push to define oneself by these new experiences (often using social media) is huge.

Second, wardrobes no longer have to be defined by the expensive business suit. This is due in part to the rapid increase in telecommuting positions, which often don’t require a dress code. Over the last decade, these positions have more than doubled in the U.S., thanks in large part to readily accessible internet and collaborative software. But even in situations where in-office work is required, business casual attire has taken over the once-was dominating suit scene.

A couple of decades ago, lifer corporate types would often hand down their trusty suits to their young professional children, saving them several hundred dollars in wardrobe costs. But here’s what a suit will get you today:

I’m not saying you should not own a suit—often a job/office environment will dictate that for you—but most young professionals choose not to because it makes more financial sense and dress codes have changed significantly. Plus, if they’re not going to make use of one, what are the chance their children will?

House

What? Don’t buy a house? But that’s the American dream, isn’t it? College, job, marriage, 2.5 kids, a house…

It sure used to be. But if pundits are right, then 2018 is going to be a rough year—home-buyers will find themselves paying a lot more for a lot less. And why? So they can say they own their own home?

Equity is less important to younger generations, and not because financial institutions suddenly changed their mind about it. It really is a matter of affordability. Millennials are entering the consumer market with soaring a cost of living, painful student loan debt, and salaries that just don’t make up the difference. So, they’ve had to rethink their use of money—and in most cases, they value enjoying experience in the here and now over the possibility of property in the future.

Simply put, the young set are renters. And there’s less of a stigma on living through your 30s and 40s as a renter if you’re genuinely happy and can maintain a reasonable quality of life.

When they ARE ready to buy—generally older and deeper into a career—these younger professionals have no interest in sacrificing an ideal location just for a picket fence. Instead, they scout out condos. It’s little wonder that in many cases, urban condos are appreciating much faster than single-family homes.

If markets continue their current trend, the cost of living continues to soar, and salaries climb at a snail’s pace, then the future for home-sellers will be bleak. Why? Well, nobody can afford one.

Smartphones

At some point, these wonders of modern communication will drop in price—maybe. But for now, buying a brand-new, late model smartphone is going to set you back about $1,000. The trouble is, if you wait even a year to sell it or trade it in for an upgrade, you’re going to be very disappointed: Most smartphones lose 60-70% of their value in a year, and as much as 90% in two years.

Okay, you argue, but owning a cellphone is actually financially smart; the gouging costs of “renting” one through the manufacturer or service provider is enough to make you gag every time you see your monthly bill. At the same time, however, there’s been growing evidence that companies are throttling service and functionality of old devices. Even if they don’t do so intentionally, technology moves at a lightning clip and before you know it, your expensive smartphone no longer plays well with others. This is perhaps most keenly felt in the growing world of the Internet of Things (IoT). Dated hardware like a two-generation-old Apple TV may not respond to the newest Apple remote app on your iPhone X. Why? Because, well, technology.

For convenience and reliability alone, then, it seems that many people are opting to swallow the monthly cost of “renting” their smartphones—provided they get an upgrade at the end of a year or 18 months.

In other words, nobody wants your iPhone 6.

The seven year old’s smartphone.

I made a few comments on a post about seven year old.s having phones and wearing makeup, Which was a plea for nostalgia, romanticism and "a childhood like mine" Let kids be kids again, etc. My comments were apparently unwelcome and were removed, then they blocked me. Boo Hoo.

So I figure I'll do it here.

I'm not a young man anymore, and I'm the dad of a seven year old, who asked for a phone for Christmas. Even though he's got access to several tablets. The best of them being a Samsung Galaxy S2. https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_tab_s2_9_7-7438.php

But because his mother spends a lot of time on a phone, and I recently got a new phone, he asked Santa his own phone. So like any good geek dad, I found him a good one. A Xaomi Redmi Note 4: https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_redmi_note_4-8531.php

Which was cheap at $135 packing a 4100mAh battery a 2Ghz 8 core Snapdragon 625 CPU with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage. It has a 5.5" IPS screen, two cameras (13MP & 5MP) a fingerprint Sensor, and it runs Android 7. Announced in January 2017, it's a year old.

On the face of it it's probably a lot better than the bulk of the people posting on the now blocked post have actually got. Not because they're poor, or stupid. But because they're sheltered, and they don't know any better. They go into a phone carriers shop, or a big box retail technology shop and they see what's on display, they see the prices and they come out with what they can afford, based on what's being sold to them. It was ever thus.

My son's only concern was how the elves made his phone. I told him they outsourced to the Chinese like everyone else.

In my day the fuss was about computers, there were actual branded computer shops, where people bought new PC's, they never got cheaper. But they got faster, and they threw in more stuff you didn't need, like multi-function printers, scanners, cameras, phones, etc. This is part of a longer retail con, where people have no frame of reference for whether what they're being sold is any good or not.

This comes down to the simple counterintuitive manipulation, that is the pricing of electronic items in supermarkets like WalMart, etc. Not to mention phone shops. Essentially there are three prices. The lowest price is there to attract the buyers who will not buy unless you have something cheap, without which you miss the opportunity of a sale. The Middle price is there to attract most people, who will not go for the cheapest model. The High price is the con. The high price is there to make the middle price look low in comparison. Though in actual fact the higher the high price gets the higher you get to move the middle price. Which is what the bulk of your customers will actually buy. Almost nobody will pay the high price, and if they do it's pure profit, It's sneaky, and counter intuitive, but if you make the expensive thing even more expensive you make the middle item look better, by comparison, regardless of it's actual cost.

You will will notice I'm talking about price and not product, because that's how the retailer thinks, this is about rent extraction. Just like the Phone carriers store.

In places like Germany where I live they don't have Google Chromebooks on sale in big box technology shops as they will cannibalise the sale of higher price notebooks from paid placements from other brands. With things like the Chromecast however, they have no choice but to sell it, as if they don't you'll go to Amazon. Or Google. This is the "low price" phenomenon. People won't buy a more expensive gadget when the "cheap" one is a great value. $35 is a killer price.

All of this however is a distraction/digression from my main point with the "childhood like mine" thesis. Which is, that harking back to the past with it's classical notions of playing outside with your friends until the sun went down, and having a "proper childhood" is just romanticism, and will not serve your child going into an accelerating future. Especially if you do not understand technology in the first place.

I've worked with computers for a long time, and of lateit has become evident to me that only people my age do my job, (UNIX Admin, look it up) this is well paid hardcore technical work.

As a longtime Apple fanboy (and inveterate Android user) I'm glad that Apple have made computing good again, and that because of them people have a good experience of "computers" However, they have done it by simplifying the interface. So you only need to use a finger or two to operate the device. This means that kids today never actually learn to use a "full fat" computer. With it's difficult interface paradigms, and the need to understand what the hardware does, and how it interacts with the (often flaky) software that sit's on top of it. Often they barely know enough to adequately use it, let alone being able to understand, administer and troubleshoot it.

There is a deep computer paradigm that "software is eating the world" and that ultimately AI will eat your lunch. Whether or not it ever achieves any form of consciousness is of interest to people like me, but it has no bearing on the fact that "in the future" there are going to be fewer jobs to go around, simply because AI is faster, cheaper to run, and doesn't need sleep, food or toilet breaks.

You are expendable, and it is the purpose of modern capitalism to make you obsolete, so that the capitalists can extract the maximum rent they can from any accelerated process they devise. Saying this is not communism, there is no resistance to this. Like it or not this is coming for your job, and the potential jobs your children will be able to do. This is what Basic Income (that Elon Musk amongst others have been talking about) is, and why it is the only solution to "technical unemployment." When 70% of many a Western nations economy is consumer demand, without cash there is no economy. People with out money, or with very little do not spent on anything but the necessities. If you fail to understand this, you will have no job in the future.

As such, giving you child a phone, or a tablet, (and no help using it) is essential if they are to get to grips with modern technology. This IMO is why games are so essential. Kids want to play games, and they will learn if you let them. To be honest, Minecraft is a better version of Lego than has ever existed. Just as a tablet/phone is a better toy than has ever existed. My 7yo who can speak three languages and write in two alphabets, yet he cannot read well, cannot type. He can however ask YouTube for the video he wants and Google is clever enough to understand and give him what he ask for, most of the time. Looking through his search history is an education.

Once he began playing games, it became much easier to interest him in my PC. He can now use the keyboard and use the mouse with suprising proficiency. He uses a controller like a native. He's already screwed up some of my games as I made the mistake of giving him a login to my PC and letting him experiment. Which was costly as he messed up as he didn't know what we was doing. Because again, computers are hard. Both to setup and maintain.

Once I upgrade my PC I'll give him my old one. Once he learns to read then he'll be ready both to play, and to learn. Imagine being able to ask for anything, and get a result. I'm not talking about Alexa or the Google Assistant. I'm talking about throwing an obscure word into Google and seeing what you get back. The serendipity of search and what Keynes thought of as the beauty contest model:

"It is not a case of choosing those [faces] that, to the best of one's judgment, are really the prettiest, nor even those that average opinion genuinely thinks the prettiest. We have reached the third degree where we devote our intelligences to anticipating what average opinion expects the average opinion to be. And there are some, I believe, who practice the fourth, fifth and higher degrees." (Keynes, General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, 1936).

The point being that in getting things out of Google you often have to second guess that third degree, of what you think other people will ask to get an answer to a question you have.

But what does all this have to do with seven year olds having access to smartphones and makeup? This:

In the near future, 7-27 years, when your seven year old child is 14-34, essentially thier prime working years. There is a 25-65% chance of human level AI, according to AI experts polled by Nick Bostrom who wrote the book "Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers Strategies" (look it up) That means that to get a decent job, then your child, (and mine) is going to need "the full stack" of technology skills. Those being Mathematics, electronics, robotics, programming, hardware, etc.  To look after the new devices and the legacy systems that will be left behind. The rest of the people without that level of knowledge will be part of the precariat, on zero hours contracts, without stable well paid work, because the employers will not need to employ humans except for the things that machine and AI cannot do cheaply or efficiently.  

So in denying you kids access to the tools and the learning that is the information ecosystem, embodied by phones tablets and PC's, from an early age. Especially without the desire or necessity to learn, you will doom them to a far worse standard of life the you or your parents have enjoyed. By this I mean *ALL* children, boys as well as girls. For boys it's especially important because they cannot rely on finding a richer man to get them out of trouble. Which is an option open to pretty and not so pretty girls who have nothing else to recommend them.  

The technology literati and many newspapers & websites are having the AI arguments right now, mostly as it draws page views and that brings in ad-spend. Nobody I've yet seen has any solution beyond the normal platitudes about "retraining" for better jobs that will mythically turn up because they always have before. When new technology has made people in old industries redundant in the past. The future rarely looks like the past & Hope is not a investment strategy.

Get your heads out of the sand and understand that. That is what the issue is in denying kids the possibility of learning from the tools that they will need in the future. It's not about harking back to some golden age of childhood. It's being able to function and thrive in the world they will inherit.

I was present for the first wave of computing, which is true of most of my colleagues, who are all within 5-10 years of my age. My mother had a dim view of the time I put into "messing about" and playing with computers. As a teenager given the choice of spending money on a new computer, or on a tattoo, she told me to get the tattoo. It was only once I'd actually got a well paid job that paid me more in my first few years of computer work, than my mother and father made, (combined) in their best years, that she understood that she'd been wrong. That she too had misjudged the future based on her past experiences.

I am determined not to make the same mistakes, founded on overt caution and a rosy view of the past with my son. He needs to understand the world he's growing up in, and the world he will inherit. He has to want to learn, even if it's hard and arcane. The way to do that IMO is through early exposure, and explicit fun. Games are fun, They are "an education and a consolation" because if he can't get a job then he can at least stay home and play games on Basic Income. Games will train his problem solving, his patience and perseverance. It will reward him hopefully with a better job than most who will work out too late that "work" has changed. If not it will console him with what is possible in the absence of work.

That is the unspoken context behind giving a smartphone to a seven year old. Have at it.
