How to take a compliment.

I'm not trying to insult anyone, I've just noticed people deflecting and saying "I don't know how to take a compliment."

I understand that emotionally, taking a compliment can be tough sometimes. Here's some tips of how to respond when you don't know what to say or do.

I'm not trying to call anyone out, and I hope you all can behave and agree not to @ people. That's mean. If this is advice you need, read it, and if this is something a friend needs to hear, reblog it. Don't DM it to someone to call them out, even privately. It will come off as rude and that you didn't read past the title.

Greeting

This can be a keyboard smash

Say their name

This is where you use your manners and say thank you

This part is needed. Seriously. If you're worried you might sound like you're deflecting, emphasize this part.

Emotional reaction statement

This is where people tend to deflect. Don't.

If you're struggling with this, make it an "I am" statement.

Just say how the compliment made you feel

I'm on cloud nine, I didn't think people were going to like this

I'm so glad you feel that way!

Notice how even when the complimenter was brought into it, it never brought the speaker down, but brought both people up.

What to avoid:

I don't deserve this

I disagree, but thanks

You're lying to me

It's not that good

You're way better than I am

Whoever complimented you took time out of their day to appreciate you. By invalidating their words, what you're saying is "your opinion is wrong." And it adds a layer of stress to the complimentor to either double down and convince you to accept their affection, or walk away knowing you didn't want their support.

You're not a burden. Please, that's not what I'm trying to explain. When you compliment someone and they don't accept it, it frustrates you, doesn't it? You want to praise them and they're not letting you. It's aggravating when you compliment someone and they evade it, but that doesn't make you love them any less, now does it? 💖

Just let me think you're cool. Even if you disagree, accept that I think that. I'm valid even though I'm different and see things differently than you do. Let me look at you and have a positive opinion. Opinions don't get to be wrong. I can't make you love yourself, but I can still love you.

You can compliment the other person

Notice how even though I'm complimenting the complimentor, I'm not deflecting the initial compliment. Say thank you and remove any negativity.

There shouldn't be anything about how you didn't expect them to follow through on their word and are surprised (like omg I can't believe you actually read this), or how you don't deserve their love and attention. They're trying to validate you, please don't insult their taste, jugement, or behavior by deflecting it.

Seriously though, if you are genuinely bothered by the comment, treat it like you would a hate comment- ignore it or delete it. Some compliments can make you feel uncomfortable in a "this feels oddly sexualizing" or a "this feels demeaning." There is a difference between "this comment is unsettling evsn though it's masked in positivity" and "I don't feel like I deserve this praise." Know the difference.

Ignore the creeps and delete things with red flags. Thank the people who are genuine and mean well, even if they are more proud of you than you are of yourself.

Even if you don't feel deserving of a compliment, someone wanted you to hear it. Don't let your own low self esteem stop people from appreciating your work.
