Honestly, the only DJATS deleted scenes I care about are the Simone and Lisa ones. The "more volatile" Camibilly Chicago argument scene and the Eddie and Camila s*x scene (ew) seem ridiculous. They could've filmed better scenes instead, like an older Lisa doing interviews,or something acknowledging Rod's sexuality. But again, Daisybilly was all the writers cared about.
Are there deleted scenes? I don't know anything about that, but if this is true, then that they still had at least some sense. Imagine it could have been worse than it was!
Luckily we have imagination so we can make believe what we want, we don't need the DJATS writers telling us what went on with any character. Not that it would mean anything if they did. I made a post a few days ago pointing out that it was not possible for Camila to have taken the Aurora cover art photo the way they showed it, which means it was a lie. And if they can lie about one thing, they may lie about others. As far as I'm concerned, anyone is allowed whatever they make of this story--and that includes people I disagree with.
(Yeah I know nobody needs my permission, but still.)

Simon Stride - Vitaliy Golovkin
Review —
Starting with some random information. I have to mention I have bootlegs of the show in several cast compositions many times but, especially since the show closed now, I was glad I managed to see some of the last performances live. In fact, I only had a ticket for the 30th at first and thought I would only make it to the stagedoor on 29th but when around 3,5 hours before the show as by a wonder a ticket appeared, I, of course, decided to take it in a heartbeat. Since I was staying in an apartment not very far from the theatre I went there a little earlier and met outside with friends. After a while I then noticed that someone was greeting me and when I turned around I figured out it was Elena, who just came to the theatre to get ready for the show. I then rushed to greet her as well, she congratulated me on getting to Piter again (since ofc she knew about my ✨adventure✨ at the border control the other day😵‍💫) and I also managed to hand over the bouquet of flowers I bought for her. 🥰 Honestly, after this small, coincidental meet-up my mood already went up by 1000 but by then I did not even expect just how much better this evening was still going to become. We then went inside the theatre, met some more friends there and just walked around, taking pictures. I also got a programme of the show which I asked some of the actors to sign the next day.
The show - I honestly don’t think I’ll be able to even closely describe my amazement about this show in words but overall it really was a breathtaking and fantastic experience and (no shade to other productions, I love the musical in general) I am now even more convinced that the Russian production is my favourite out of them. The costumes are gorgeous, the whole cast and ensemble is great, the orchestra and the music itself are also amazing… I was already impressed when the show started with Kirill’s Doctor Jekyll from the off giving some kind of “introduction” to the show and sort of explaining how every person is split into good and bad etc. also I really loved the stage design and how the scenery on stage switched for almost every scene, starting with scenes in the madhouse and then switching to Sie Danvers’ home, the red rat, and Doctor Jekyll’s Study or Laboratory all the time. 'Lost in the darkness' and 'I need to know' right at the beginning were really great scenes and I also have to remark that 'facade' (and its 1000 reprises) and the ensemble dancing scenes in general were really impressing. At the end of act 1 Hyde was sort of lighting a flame on stage and even though I sat in the 7th row, I was able to feel the warmth on my face.. (I’ll just mention my absolute favourites now bc otherwise it’s gonna be too long) One of my favourites was definitely the engagement scene, which was absolutely adorable. Also the fact that Henry and Emma wore matching clothes almost made my heart melt.🥺 I also adored the 'his work and nothing more' part. 'Alive' and 'dangerous game' were some really hot scenes as well, as was confrontation. At 'a new life' and ‘once upon a dream' I had trouble holding back my tears. And, I know it’s a very unpopular opinion, but ‘in his eyes' will forever be among my most favourite scenes in the whole show. Especially in this composition because Elena and Nataliya just sounded really great together. The final also left me in tears. This time was by the way one of the shows where Emma also dies in the end :'( So overall, the whole show was amazing.
Cast - starting with Jekyll/Hyde of course. As you might know, my favourite J&H unfortunately hasn’t been playing since 2018, so I had no chance of seeing him. Nevertheless, I saw both Kirill and Roman now and they were both great, though very different (about Roman I’ll write in the other review). To sum up, Kirill was an exceptional J&H, he found the perfect balance between a very introverted doctor who is pretty much focused on his work only and evil, savage Mr Hyde. To me personally, his Henry even seemed less sociable and a bit more cold/withdrawn than some other portrayals I’ve seen. While for others it seems the extreme obsession with work only developes over the course of the show and they did care a lot more for Emma before all that, he really seems to have chosen his work as his top priority right from the start and she only comes second. Nevertheless, the chemistry between him and Elena (and Natasha as well) was really good and they seemed like a very sweet couple during their engagement. Moreover, I have noticed that you sometimes see Hydes who are acting more beast-like and wild while others, like Kirill’s, seem to focus more on the evil, maniac side of the character. Overall, I really enjoyed his portrayal though. Emma. My favourite. I have to admit I wasn’t a huge fan of Emma and always thought she’s a rather boring character - until I saw Elena’s portrayal of her. I could write hours about how much I love her Emma, but to sum up she was just amazing, both vocally and acting-wise. Her Emma was very tender, always loving, kind and supportive towards Jekyll, but at the same time she had this strong and independent side to her, which was visible especially in her interactions with stride at the beginning. She’s pretty much driven by her love for Henry, never leaving his side and always believing in him, even if nobody else does, even though it is noticeable that she has her doubts later on and that she really suffers from her fiancé’s constant absence and Lena just portrayed all of this perfectly. Nataliya as Lucy was also great. I really enjoyed watching her 'bring on the men' and the scenes in the red rat in the beginning but at the same time I suffered with her during 'a new life' and her death left me in tears as well. It’s just impossible to not feel touched by her story seeing how such a kind-hearted woman who never gives up believing in her dream and hoping for a new life, despite her position in society, has to go through so much suffering…
stage door - first of all, right after the show I got a chance to take a picture with Emma in costume and after that and after I went to get my jacket from the wardrobe, I went out to the stage door, met some more friends there and then we waited for the actors together. There were masses of people that day, so I was really worried I wouldn’t be able to take photos or ask for autographs. I almost didn’t notice when Elena came out because she was surrounded by such a huge crowd of people. Luckily, my friend told her that I’d like to see her and ask to sign something again and she came to us right away, took some pics with me and signed my photo album with the photos with her from another concert in September before she left. She’s the sweetest, honestly, I can’t even describe how much I love her <3 When the crowd started to disappear I also managed to take a picture with Kirill. We stayed for a little longer and suddenly noticed that someone had placed some huge plastic cherries next to Kirill in front of the stage door. They were gone again later, but up to this date, we haven’t figured out why they were standing there. I showed Elena the photo with the cherries later and asked whether she knows, since I suggested it might’ve been a present for Kirill, but she didn’t know anything about it either. We later figured out they were taken away from a café nearby and placed there. Why is still unknown. Anyways, that was my first Jekyll&Hyde💗 I’ll write the second review tomorrow! If you have questions/remarks whatsoever, feel free to ask, comment, text me etc)
Should I post some of the photos as well? :D

RICH NEIGHBORS PART 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO
Part 1 THE GABRIELING
-wow does Lila get absolutely C R E A M E D in this au.
-almost makes you feel bad.
-almost
-since we got Mr Felix “I don’t need friends. They disappoint me” Agreste here, you better believe this girl gets exposed faster than you can say “Watermelon Kids”.
-(I mean Felix quotes that vine all the time to his FRIENDS so it sorta doesn’t apply but whatever you get what I mean.)
-Lila lies immediately about Marinette. But she obviously doesn’t know it’s Marinette, because Marinette goes by Marie Mêler, and not Marinette Dupain-Cheng.
-it’s actually kind of funny because Noel Bulles (I’m going with Nino’s brother’s name being Chris, not Noel because I needed a name and Noel was the best one so) or Nino Lahiffe also overhears her bragging about being best friends with him, just as he had said about Marinette.
-“oh Marinette Dupain Cheng and I are besties! Us and Nino Lahiffe, we’re like this!” She grins, crossing her fingers to signify how close they are.
-Oh heck to the no!
-Marinette is now becoming angry and that’s not good, so Felix decides “hey, I’ve met Dupain Cheng and Lahiffe before, and they are almost never in the public eye. It’s basically impossible for that to be true. But if you want to continue trying to make this class your sheeple, be my guest. You’ll see what happens when you do.”
-silence
-And the entire class kind of explodes
-everyone realizes that, hmm, yeah that’s a bit suspicious.
-there was no reason for Felix to lie about that, because they know that this 17 year old that acts like some 30 something businessman literally could care less about the class liking him.
-They immediately are more cautious of Lila’s words, and when she starts talking about Jagged and his cat, that really brings it home.
-they ignore her.
-they aren’t mean to her, since that’s just not anyone’s style. Chloe went to homeschool a few years ago, and that’s the only real “bully” they had.
-but they don’t take anything she says seriously. Lila eventually realizes that the lying is not working. So she just stops talking as much, moves to the back of the classroom without prompting, and plans her next move.
-“that wasn’t too bad!” You say, forgetting that there is more.
-Watermelon kids and their reveal!
-Marie is Marinette Dupain Cheng?!
-Noel is Nino Lahiffe?!
-Lila, who hadn’t really talked in weeks except to attempt to gain some sort of sympathy, paled immediately when she was confronted with it on Monday morning.
-“this is proof that you were definitely lying. You should be glad Felix stopped me before I put that video of you on my blog.”
-Alya Cesaire everyone!
-she has a blog where just writes about different attractions and news in Paris. She figured getting such a scoop from the best friend of two never seen in public rich kids would really jump start her blog.
-Felix and Adrien stopped her, Adrien being nice and calm about it and Felix telling her it would be idiotic to post the interview without sources.
-and she listens, bc even though she’s still hopeful that Lila is telling the truth, it does sound a bit too good to be true.
-Alya is still best friends with our baby Mari.
-it’s different than in canon but they hang out at Alya’s a lot, sometimes when Mari stays at the bakery she’ll invite Alya over, and basically they are inseparable
-Alya isn’t really into romance, at least not for herself since she’s trying to kickstart a career, but when she sees the budding romances between Mari and Felix and Adrien and Nino
-Madamoiselle Matchmaker at your service.
-but enough of my girl Alya
-lets get back to the WATERMELON KIDS
-they are both so awkward after the reveal.
-people in class are all starry eyed and it’s weird because okay, they were both nice and well known in the class and throughout the school
-BUT THIS IS NEXT LEVEL
-Mari basically sticks close to her friends because when she gets overwhelmed, they help her out a ton.
-Nino tries to be chill and it’s not working.
-but the thing is, now people either try to become best friends with them for the benefits, or they insult them because they’re rich kids
-and, yeah it doesn’t really bother them.
-sticks and stones, you know?
-but then someone insulted Alya, saying she’s a suck up and she’s just hanging around the group so she can get a scoop and expose their secrets and stuff.
-and Mari and Nino actually go off.
-that is their little baby reporter friend who can definitely take care of herself and doesn’t need to play dirty to get good news and be a great reporter thank you very much
-they can handle being insulted themselves, but touch their friends and family and it’s game over.
-Alya finds it very sweet
-she does remind them that she can take care of herself, but thanks them for backing her up
-Emile Agreste
-woah where did she come from???
-there’s a movie premiere in Paris and she’s attending and Adrien is like !!!
-Felix is just kind of... standoffish when she’s in town??
-he’s just bitter that both his mother and father are distant and his dad’s assistant is more of a mother figure to him at this point.
-btw, Nathalie is so done. She sometimes cries in her office, which sounds really sad until you learn she is just leaning her head on the wall and crying as she bangs her head.
-ma’am please take a month off and take a vacation
-but she can’t because she loves the boys too much
-she’s emile’s best friend, and so when she gets kind of mad at em for being gone so much, everyone’s really surprised.
-she’s walking into the premiere with a tablet in her hands and Emile is like “wow I missed you and Gabe so much!!!”
-and Felix and Adrien are RIGHT THERE LIKE-
-and Nathalie just snaps
-“obviously not enough to actually take a break. Felix, Adrien, it’s time to go into the theatre. Your father won’t be joining us, he didn’t deem this important enough to attend in person.”
-mari and Nino are nearby and OH DO YOU NEED SOME ICE FOR THAT BURN MADAME AGRESTE
-what was I talking about?
-oh yeah, back to fashion.
-that’s Marinette right there, making new designs.
-she does special celebrity commissions and gifts herself, but they have tons of other designers and seamstresses helping with the actual mass production of lines.
-Mari’s first fashion show is a collaboration between DC and LE. They provide the runway music and have live up and comers, and Mari does the same, with smaller designers presenting their lines before Mari’s and her’s being the final and the crown jewel.
-she jump started a lot of careers that way, both in the music and fashion industries.
-the watermelon kids are on every teen magazine
-they are huge in America
-both of them traveled there to just get a better feel of American culture, fashion, and music and wow
-paparazzi
-EVERYWHERE
-Nino meets some American singers and convinces his mother that an American location would be good for the company
-Marinette does the same, insisting that it would be full of profit
-it works and the summer following the reveal, Marinette, Nino, Alya, and the Agreste Twins all go to America.
-which will be elaborated on in Part 3!
This whole thing was sort of a mess lol
I jumped around a lot but most of these were the first ideas that popped into my head and it was a lot of fun to create.

sweeney todd manila review
okay, just a heads up, i don’t know much about sweeney todd outside of this production and of what little bits i’ve heard of the other productions, so this won’t be the most professional review. i watched the show on the twentieth of october and i believe the whole cast was there.
btw, this is gonna be really messy bc i still have lots of stuff to do so i’m speed typing this review out KDDLJF.
(hello, @thegirlisuedtobe, this is for you! sorry if this is very late, i was really busy!)
- the set is phenomenal. before the show started, there was the sound of rain while smoke scattered across the stage. it really gave off a very eerie vibe to the show, even if it hasn’t started, and i give huge props to the set designers for setting the tone of the musical!
- here’s what amazed me the most about the set-- FLOATING CARS. there were cars hanging up on strings and just... wow. absolutely breathtaking. there was also an upperstage that was build particularly for this musical which was also well done as well. on stage left, there was this platform in particular that intrigued me because it was slanted and only had a railing that could possibly reach below your thigh. it was risky, i might say, and because of that, huge appreciation to the cast because they were able to maneuver themselves on that platform without slipping or injuring themselves.
- another interesting prop which i’m sure many of you have seen in promos was the red car that both mrs lovett and sweeney todd used. in my opinion, at first glance, the car looked cool, but there were some pros and cons.
- pros of the car: the car gave some kind of edginess to the musical. the main characters rode the car into the stage as their introduction and it really left a good impact! additionally, i loved the way how they moved the car around. all transitions were so smooth and commendable and i praise the designer who thought of all of these up.
- cons of the car: it was awkward when the setting was at the bakery of mrs lovett. the car represented the second floor of the building and the chair of sweeney’s barbershop merely rested on top of the car. it was... kinda confusing at first, especially when it is really up to the audience on how they want to interpret the murders that occurred on the car (more on that later). additionally, the car served as a weird divider to the shop, the bakehouse, and the barbershop, and honestly, they should’ve placed the barbershop on the upperstage instead of on top of the car. (gurl, when i say i was confused, i say i was confused.)
- the keep your cellphone message was really funny to me but... kinda long? like it was so unnecessarily long that i was confused whether the show started or not. i also thought they were checking the set since there was many props littered around. but when they eventually get to the point of things, it was really, really funny, so i commend them for adding this small comedic scene just for audience members to stop taking photos.
- the singing of the cast was phenomenal! these people are just... so great, and it was definitely the highlight of the show.
- now... here’s where i get a little bit iffy-- the costumes. i don’t really know what to say because the costumes seem... laughable. but not in a good way. it seems like they wanted to modernize the costumes which is understandable but at some cases, it kinda fails?
- pros of costume: mrs lovett and pirelli really have the costumes which i loved. lea salonga did not look like herself but my god, did her costume stand out from the rest. and pirelli, on the other hand, had a cape that wooshed around a lot alongside a skirt, and boio, did nyoy volante nail this costume well. the modernizing costume thing didn’t really work with the others besides these two. other modernized costumes that look passable were tobias’ costume and some of the ensemble. (also, jonas fogg wore a denim jacket with a junji ito screencap on the back of it? uh, okay, i love junji ito but why is his manga featured here...)
- cons of costume: oh boy. sweeney todd’s costume was... eh. jeans, really? out of everything they could’ve given to sweeney fucking todd, they gave him a polo under a denim jacket under a blazer and jeans? then there’s the mess that is johanna’s costume design. girl, the designer probably went to an sm sale and decided to just shove anything they found in the department store into their cart. johanna’s dress was. eh. her wig? eh. the costumes didn’t snatch my wig but i’ll let them snatch my wig just so that they can replace whatever the heck johanna has on her head. additionally, not all costumes were modernized... which is like... what? the ensemble who had victorian era-esque costumes looked fine! they even could’ve given sweeney todd one of their costumes because it looked much better than the denim outfit they gave sweeney. it’s just quite... odd to see a mix of modernized costumes and oldstyle costumes mix all together because they lowkey clash with one another.
- okay, let’s move on to the actors themselves. let’s start of with lea salonga-- oh my god, she is a legend. she easily adapted into being mrs lovett and that is so commendable especially when she isn’t used to playing an insane role like that. her mrs lovett had consistent, chaotic energy which i admired and she really was the one to eye whenever you see her in a scene.
- jett pangan was great but he isn’t as consistent as lea when he portrayed his character. sweeney todd was insane, he is angery, he is chaotic but jett pangan portrayed him as stoic and silent in some parts. i really enjoyed his more insane side during little priest but i wished he kept it throughout the whole performance. what i did like about him is his voice is just so, so great. his vibratos were so good y’all, his singing in general makes up for everything. additionally, when sweeney gets emotional, he did a really good job portraying a sadder and more depressed kind of sweeney, almost like he was having some existential crisis on stage. (he really looked like he was regretting life choices during by the sea and the ending, it was actually kind of amusing).
- now, luigi quesada, an underrated actor from this production. god... he was just so consistent and energetic and an absolutely great actor. he really portrayed a pure soft boi through tobias and when he started to become insane, he portrayed that shift of character so fucking well. the shift of character was my absolute favorite thing because, in my opinion, it is the scariest thing that’s happened in sweeney todd. tobias was a pure, innocent child who wanted nothing more but to have a smol job and serve others nicely and then, bam, when he saw the corpses, something snapped in his head and it was so horrific to witness his change. additionally, luigi had such a cheerful singing voice which embodied the character well and accustomed to both the innocent and insane side of tobias.
- nyoy volante was another great treasure in this. he wasn’t as seen since his character died midway through but his stage presence is so great. he was so flamboyant while also being very comedic, using his costume to emphasize the comedy. also, he didn’t die immediately when he got attacked by sweeney, and he did portray the struggling pirelli so, so well.
- gerald santos was... okay. he has a great singing voice, they all do, so i tend to judge how good they are based from their acting. gerald was really good at portraying a panicky anthony who was desperate for johanna. his character was really consistent and i like that! my main issue with gerald is at some times, his diction isn’t too great. i know that some filipinos (even me) would struggle pronouncing words in english, but if you’re an actor who’s worked on many musicals in english, i expect a lot from you. i think he had a really thick filipino/tagalog accent and mixed with a really mediocre british accent, it wasn’t too... understandable. i couldn’t understand most of his dialogue and because he can’t do accents well, his acting becomes affected.
- mikkie volante’s voice is so fucking beautiful, how do you even sing that high and make it look easy? anyways, she portrayed a very frightful johanna very well, and i can’t believe how much the costume and wig really affects my perception of the character. it’s just... i can’t take her seriously if she looks... like that. okay, enough about the costumes-- her johanna felt scared and i felt that, but when she fell in love with anthony, she was desperate, and i fuckin loved it. being isolated for your entire life will leave you desperate for affection and mikkie fucking nailed it!
- andrew fernando was so-so as the judge. he wasn’t... creepy, or disturbing. his character is disgusting and so close-minded but i never felt any eerie vibes from him. i also think the costume he had was restricting him from doing anything because he had layers upon layers of clothing and when he began whipping himself, he looked like he struggled a lot to sing and do the actions (the costumes for this production is just so off in general it’s a bit offensive). there wasn’t much stage presence from him and i just wanted him to act a bit filthier.
- arman ferrer as the beadle was a trip. he portrays the character as so dumb and i loved it, it’s just the idiotic energy really cracks me up. additionally, his singing, oh my word, his singing is so good. he hits high notes like it was no problem and it was jawdropping. there was not much to say besides his fuckin costume was whack why did he wear that-- but overall, he was pretty solid!
- ima castro was good! she portrayed a crazy beggar woman which was so chaotic and funny and just fucking bonkers and i loved the energy she had! the only thing i note is that, at times, her voice would stop and i’m not sure if it was intentional or not? even if it wasn’t, it actually added to her character rather than brought her down.
- ensemble was... phenomenal. ignoring the costumes for the hundredth time, i love the ensemble so much because they don’t get enough credit yet they nail it every time they get into a production. their acting during the asylum scene? iconic. their accents? iconic. everything was so iconic.
- now, imma just say a few points in the show that i remembered which is worthy enough to tell yall of.
- here i’ll explain how the murders work. it’s kinda... weird. the execution was inconsistent and i remembered three ways on how they were able to kill and cook their victims. firstly, the murder with pirelli is the only one of its kind. sweeney sliced his throat and threw him into the driver’s seat of the car which was confusing considering how the other murders took place. the second kind of murder and the more common one is when sweeney sliced someone’s throat, the victim would walk off the car and walk into mrs lovett’s oven by themselves. i’m assuming that with pirelli, they didn’t bake him yet so they just hid him in some kind of box or crate somewhere. the third kind applied to the judge and the beggar woman wherein when they killed them, it was implied that they were brought to the bakehouse and not burnt.
- here’s my interpretation of how the murders go. in the original, the bakehouse was the basement, but here, i assume since they claim it’s a “bakehouse”, there’s a secret compartment in the barbershop that brings dead bodies directly into the oven. i’m guessing that with judge turpin and the beggar woman, the oven was not on so they were just... brought there? it’s really, really confusing and i wished they cleared it up so i won’t keep wondering about what is where and how things work. i do think that the victims walking into the oven is really genius because it was a perfect mix of comedy and eeriness which i really commend.
- i liked the way they portrayed the streets in this. they used the upper stage and it really clears up where each scenery is set! it isn’t like the bakery and barbershop wherein the set is confusing, it was much better than that. when mrs lovett and sweeney walked up to pirelli’s barbershop, the scenery was so interesting because they walk from above and look down at them. i really, really liked it.
- additionally, the sprays tobias advertised were cleaning sprays found in ace hardware store, that’s funny. also, the only time their haggard wigs would be effective is when tobias used it and nothing else. (i’ve seen better wigs in beautiful, where did those wigs go?)
- the way they portrayed johanna’s place was so, so good. johanna’s room would be atop the upper stage and, ugh, it’s just so well put-together. this whole set was the work of god and no one can convince me otherwise.
- the lighting was great but the sound design was a bit off for me. the electrocution noises were smart to use but i thought it was a bit too loud? like it was really off-putting. i wished they added gross sloshing noises when they were handling the body parts just to add give a better effect when mrs lovett was holding actual intestines and organs.
- the opening of act 2 was hilarious and one of the more intriguing parts of this musical. pangan’s voice? spectacular. lea’s look of distress whilst serving pies? hilarious. the ensemble? god’s gift to mankind. it was so comedic because sweeney is calmly singing about johanna whilst he slices throats and the victims, in a daze, just walk into an oven while mrs lovett’s expression just screams, “yea, that’s life.”
- i can’t believe. they used handkerchiefs to express what a wig is during the asylum scene. like............ really. where are the leftover wigs from beautiful???
- also, it was weird to me that johanna was the one who shot jonas fogg. it was kinda badass of her and perhaps portrayed her character to become more brave but i still kinda thought it was ooc? (ALSO DEAN ROSEN IS GREAT I LOVE HIM HE POSTS CAT STUFF ON IG AND THATS ALL HE DOES)
- okay someone clarify with me because i initially thought tobias escaped the bakehouse, hence why they went looking for him, but they said it was locked from the outside and i’m left confused why they left in the first place...?
- btw whenever lea speaks, i become more of a lesbian, thanks lea salonga.
- when the plot twist was revealed and mrs lovett and sweeney were slow dancing, that was a theatrical experience. god, just... mrs lovett with the most fearful look in her face as sweeney slowly moves her into the oven is so iconic and that has to be one of the more chilling scenes in the musical. then, once sweeney kills her off, she holds the beggar lady close to him and he looks absolutely mournful.
- AND THEN TOBIAS FUCKING COMES BACK AND GIVES THE BIGGEST CHILLS EVER. will i ever stop talking about how good tobias was written/how good luigi quesada is? probably not.
- anyways, tldr; sweeney todd was beyond average but wasn’t perfect, the costumes were. eh. the singing was perfect, the SET was amazing, lea salonga, nyoy volante, and luigi quesada own my heart, and philippine theatre really needs better wig suppliers, someone please donate your wigs to them.

What's your favorite play/musical that you've worked on so far, professionally or in school?
My favorite play I’ve ever worked on was when I did Romeo & Juliet last summer at a small town summer stock in Ohio. It was the greatest experience I’ve ever had in theatre. I was stage managing it and it was the biggest show of the summer season. It was a massive cast and I GENUINELY loved every single cast member. And they loved me. And it was also fun bc like we were in this small ass town in middle of nowhere ohio and so literally all there was to do in the town was theatre and we all lived in the same building for provided housing and we had SUCH a fun time with it. And I clicked INSANELY well with the director, unlike any other director I’ve ever worked with. We just understood each other and it made the process a million times easier that half the time, he didn’t even have to tell me what he needed because i already knew. And more so, I believed in the show we were putting on. I had originally hated R&J but that summer I fell deeply deeply in love with it and understood it. I understood that the young lovers were just trying to LOVE in a world full of hate. And also the staging that we did was dope as FuCk. Like, the prolouge was delivered by Juliet in the tomb, with everyone in their End of Show positions, and then the rest of the show was a countdown to that moment. With a literal projection cue that would say like “Three Days Remaining….” and it was dOpe. And like when Juliet drinks the poison, her wedding dress is on the bed right? she says “Here’s drink, I drink to thee” Slams her head back and downs it BAM black out BAM bell tower sound effect BAM “One day remaining” projection cue and then it was like in the blackout for the nurses “Juliet! Oh sweet child Juliet! and then BAM lights up on Juliet standing on the scaffolding above the scene (we had glow tape out the wazzoo) and her DRESS became her body for the rest of the show with her having an out of body experience until she wakes up in the tomb under romeo’s arm like the staging STILL GIVES ME CHILLS AND ITS BEEN A YEAR. And also the sword fights?? holy fuck??? They were so hardcore that we had a 45 minute fight call before each show and fight calls are normally only 15 minutes. and we spent three weeks, Monday through Friday, 9am to Noon, training our actors in sword fighting so it was HARD. CORE. (I still have all the videos they were inSANEEEEEEEEE) and the lighting design was spectacular and the scenic design was thrilling and the costume design was dope and we had an entire score composed by a local music student and it was INCREDIBLE. also the cues and the calling were HARD. The hardest thing I’ve ever done. And I love a challenge. We teched the entire three hour show in one 10/12 with never having run the entire production for the designers. And every night during the show my palms were sweaty as hell bc I was nervous as fuck to get all the timings right. And it was THRILLING. It was the hardest I’ve ever worked on a show and the hardest show I’ve ever done and I had so much fun with the cast and the crew and we had a million inside jokes (like when I gave the 15 minute call, I had this running joke: “Good Afternoon, Fair people of Verona. This is your Captain Speaking. We’re about 15 minutes until we land, the drink cart will be coming around shortly to collect trash, but don’t take any drinks from the friar. Thank you for flying Italian Airlines!” and just like every fucking moment of it was spectacular and amazing and even on the days when it was hard, I learned and I grew and I’m a better person because of it. I literally even got a tattoo at the end of the summer that was “3.3.16.” which is the Act 3, Scene 3, Line 16, the Friar’s line: “Be patient, for the world is broad and wide.” And on closing night, I literally sobbed my eyes out and every person in the cast gave me a hug. And when we were striking, the TD gave me part of the set to keep as a thank you for all the work I had done on the show. Romeo and Juliet is my favorite production I’ve ever done because it reminded me why I loved theatre and why I was pursuing a career in it. And it reminded me that I have a place in the world. And that summer was right after I was in a Dark Place ™ and so that summer and that show kind of…resparked my love of…….life. Kind of resparked my internal flame and made me excited to be alive again. I don’t know where I would be if that show hadn’t come into my life. And if I hadn’t met the people that I did on that show. Many of whom are still my closest and dearest friends (hi alex!!) and have been a support system for me this year as I went through some shit. And like I STILL have the R&J poster tacked up in my room and STILL am using the set pieces they gave me as decor and my laptop background is STILL a show photo and i STILL pull out my totally legal recording of the show and watch it once a month and I STILL listen to the soundtrack.. A year later and I STILL can’t talk about the show without crying.
So…………. that’s my favorite show that ive ever worked on.

Movie Commentary Monday: Episode 1
Hello everyone and welcome to the very first episode of Movie Commentary Monday (or as i call MCM, which sounds ridiculous by the way) where I express my thoughts on a movie while desperately trying to be funny (and usually fail).
There will be dozens of side comments in brackets because I talk too much, sorry in advance.
This week’s movie is:
Tumblr media
Isn’t It Romantic (2019)
Directed by: Todd Strauss-Schulson
Writing Credits: Erin Cardillo (screenplay&story), Dana Fox (screenplay) & Katie Silberman (screenplay)
Stars: Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine, Priyanka Chopra, Betty Gilpin, Brandon Scott Jones
Summary: A young woman disenchanted with love mysteriously finds herself trapped inside a romantic comedy.
(thanks IMDb)
Now, buckle up folks, it’s gonna be a loooooong ride. Let’s get down to business!
(this isn’t a Mulan reference)
Why is the Mom so bitter about happy endings? I bet she has seen things...
They don’t make movies for girls like us.
THIS!!! LINE!!! IS!!! SO!!! IMPORTANT!!!
That single sentence just basically summarized the entire history of Hollywood and you can’t argue with me on this. The evidence is there (sorry i’m bitter like mom) (i’m full of rage like younger john mulaney)
Natalie’s (Rebel Wilson) apartment is a mess and is so tiny, it’s like screaming YOUR FUTURE HOUSE at me, it’s unbelievable
Fucking finally, a realistic view of New York; smelly, crowded, and filth everywhere (not that i could ever know, i don’t live there but i’ve seen metropolitans before)
“STOP THE CART WITH YOUR BODY” WTFFF I’M CRYING THAT’S SO RUDE
Ok, Natalie’s a nobody at the workplace, even though she’s a fricking architect. UNREALISTIC TO ME
That co-worker and office manager can choke, that’s all I’m gonna say
Ohmygod, Whitney (Betty Gilpin) is so cute, I’ve seen her 10 secs in and I already love her (lovey dovey characters are always my faves)
JOSH (Adam Devine) IS AMAZING, ADORABLE DORK, PROTECT HIM AT ALL COSTS
LIAM HEMSWORTH’S AMERICAN ACCENT GOT ME SH00K!!! He just said “Goddamn it” and I am already hooked
Who puts whipped cream in a coffee? ME, BITCH
I PUT WHIPPED CREAM IN MY COFFEE BECAUSE BLACK COFFEE TASTES LIKE SHIT, SORRY THAT I’M NOT TOUGH AS YOU
Natalie says nice guy with a nice life and it... kinda bothers me. It’s a reaaaally generic expression and a bit insulting if you think about it bc if you don’t fit that person’s standards of being nice with having a nice life, it discourages you (in this case, you=man). So when Josh said “I’m a nice guy with a nice life” I thought ‘Of course you are’ bc he is in my standards. What I’m trying to say is that rom-coms have stereotypes on not only women but also men. Yes, it is sad.
Awwww Josh has a crush on Natalie *wipes happy tears* but she thinks he’s looking at the model billboard LMAO SAME, NAT
I’m so done (but it’s also so relatable, bc i’m like Nat but with less cynicism)
WHITNEY’S DESKTOP OMG
PAWSITIVE VIBES???? I WANNA MARRY HER SO WE CAN WATCH ROM-COMS WITH CATS ON OUR LAPS ALL DAY TOGETHER
Natalie was on the subway and a stranger waved at her. Then he tried to mug her. Then she knocked herself over. My mom always says don’t talk to strangers and I see why. I’m 22, if you’re wondering *clears throat* Moving on...
OH MY GOD SHE WOKE UP WITH THE MAKE-UP ON AND A NICELY DONE HAIR WITH FLOWERS AND STRAWBERRY DRINK ON THE SIDE, I CAN’T-
Oh, hello Mr. Morningstar... *wiggles eyebrows* (quick note, i don’t actually watch Lucifer but i really like Tom Ellis)
She just ripped her IV and blood didn’t spill everywhere, yeah this is a rom-com alright
She’s dressed from lost and found and she looks like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman-
NO WAIT, THE ENTIRE SETTING HAS CHANGED
HOLY SHIT ‘A THOUSAND MILES’ BY VANESSA CARLTON IS STARTED TO BE PLAYED BY A RANDOM GUY ON A BIKE AND HE PLAYS IT FROM THE STEREO ON HIS BIKE I’M CACKLING
ENTER LIAM, HE LOOKS SO GOOD I CAN’T EVEN DESCRIBE (i’m a thirsty hoe, your suspicions are correct)
What the fuck does beguiling mean? *checks dictionary* oh, okay *is weirded out now*
HE’S AUSSIE NOW, THEY’VE DONE IT, HE’S KEEPING THE ACCENT, AND I’M HAPPY AGAIN
...Birds form a heart while flying... Uhhh... Strawberries and champagne in the limo... Rich as fuck, my poor ass can’t relate
NATALIE’S STREET HAS CHANGED, TOO
He’s giving her flowers already? Ok- NO WAIT
HE JUST WROTE HIS NUMBER ON MULTIPLE FLOWER PETALS AND HANDED TO HER, IS HE FOR REAL LMAO
“But there’s only one of you, so...” Well, this doesn’t change the fact that there are millions of ways to order the numbers, you dumbass (why is he like this)
Her apartment... Every Millenials’ dream
And... A gay neighbor/best friend who acts like an over-feminine gay (which is also a stereotype)
So, I’ll count every rom-com trope I’ve seen in 22 mins *counts her fingers* So far, I have seven tropes
The Big Presentation (eight)
Unconventional workplace which looks like a Google office (nine)
Nat is the star architect now (ten)
Rival bitchy colleague (eleven) (WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE WHITNEY, THOUGH) (SHE’S MY SENSITIVE WIFE) (oh, she looks hot)
They gave like, four other tropes in two mins and it doesn’t feel like rushed at all *salutes respectively*
The setting change is so... Like, you cannot miss it, it’s sweet and makes you feel all giddy inside, it’s so lovely, so rom-com like (does that make sense to you?)
OH PRIYANKA, SHE JUST TURNED AND I’M LIKE “Oh I’m fucked”
“Josssssssh”
Natalie keeps falling (twelve)
“MY LIFE IS A ... ... ROMANTIC COMEDY!” “AND IT’S ... PG-13!″ EVERYONE STARTED DANCING BEHIND HER I’M HOLLERING
The subway map behind her is shaped in a heart, lovey dovey couples everywhere... And shE’S GONNA JUMP ONTO A TRAIN??? THIS GOT DARK ALL OF A SUDDEN
Officer Hansom *facepalms*
She threw the flower petals and guess what? THE NUMBERS FELL DOWN IN THE CORRECT ORDER, WHO COULD HAVE KNOWN HAHAHA (thirteen)
Y’ello
Y’ELLO
Y’E LL O
IS THIS HOW AUSSIES ANSWER THE PHONE, AUSSIE MUTUALS PLEASE RESPOND
BLAKE (Liam Hemsworth) IS SO ADORABLE I’M ROOTING FOR EVERYONE IN THIS MOVIE
Dress up montage... Yeah- Oh wait, they cut it out what the hell fvygbuhnj I WANT MY DRESS UP MONTAGE, GIVE IT TO MEEE
This is some fancy first date though... Also leaving 100 bucks tip doesn’t justify breaking in to a store I guess??? Seems like the law has no function in rom-coms lmao (fourteen)
BUTTER PECAN??? HOW OLD ARE YOU, 200 OR SOMETHING??? WHAT THE FUCK, MAN
The rain... You know what’s coming after- Ah, and they kissed *giggles uncontrollably* YES!!! (fifteen)
THEY CAN’T HAVE SEX BC IT’S PG-13 (liam’s abs, though) *bi scream*
Her apartment makes me cry, it’s so beautiful (ok i’ll stop counting from now on bc i cannot keep up anymore)
Also the romantic tension between Natalie and Josh................ I have no words
Isabella (Priyanka Chopra) calls Josh ‘Mush’ and it’s so f-king cringey, I swear to God sxrdctfvygu
STOP OVERSELLING NEW YORK, WE KNOW IT’S NOT THAT GOOD
I can talk about Blake for five hours, he’s so fucking funny lmao
Donny (Brandon Scott Jones) is such a gay sidekick, he comes out of nowhere and talks weirdly but he makes me laugh so I’ll give him a pass
NOW WE’RE GETTING SOMEWHERE, NATALIE’S GONNA STOP ISABELLA&JOSH’S WEDDING
That musical scene is everything, and Natalie hits that high note H AR D
GET IT, GIRL
Blake............ no-
I ROOTED FOR YOU, WE ALL ROOTED FOR YOU, HOW COULD YOU DO THAT-
Oh my, he’s a certified douchebag, I should’ve guessed, I’m so disappointed in myself
Unexpected wisdom coming from Donny who had no function to the story other than appearing beside Natalie at random times (again, rom-com trope)
BUT at least he made her realised who matters to her the most
Slow motion running!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Her boobs are like sxrdctfvyg SHAKING AS SHE’S RUNNING ESXRDCTFVYB (as someone who has big breasts, i relate to that so hard)
“Yoga Ambassador. Yoga. Ambassador.” “Ambassadors are for countries, not for streching.” Dang, Nat!!!
She finally realised she loves herself! Awww, that’s so sweet and empowering and I can’t get enough of this!!!! Yes, to love someone else first you should love yourself!
Oh she crashed the car and went back to reality
Another hot doctor???? Wait, I’m confused- No, false alarm, she’s back and her real doctor is tired, is also swimming through lawsuits LMFAO
She pulled her IV and blood SPILLED EVERYWHERE AS IT SHOULD BE, THANK GOD
I’m glad that she’s happy with what she’s got and she didn’t decide to keep what she’s been doing but instead, tried to take care of herself, it’s such a good message to young girls and I cannot praise this enough
PLOT TWIST, DONNY IS ACTUALLY REALLY GAY AND HAS A BOYFRIEND AND IS ALSO A WEED DEALER OH MY FUCKING GOD I LOVE THE TWIST SO MUCH
Natalie!!! Is!!! Confident!!! Now!!! I’m literally living for this *throws hearts to the screen*
OH MY WIFE IS BACK, HI WHITNEY I LOVE YOU MY SWEET SUMMER WIFE I MISSED YOU
Nat stormed into that meeting and she’s. on. fireeee
Real Blake is as jerk as ever, no surprise
Using parking lots as metaphors would never cross my mind but ok I guess???
Fuck, he said “What does beguiling mean?” I’M LOST FOR WORDS, THIS MOVIE SXDCTFVYGU
JOSH HAS BEEN LOOKING AT NATALIE FOR THE WHOLE TIME, NOT THE SWIMSUIT MODEL, WHO COULD HAVE THOUGHT???
ps. me and probably everyone else except Nat lol
EVERYONE SINGS
THIS IS NOT A DRILL
I REPEAT, EVERYONE SINGS AND IT’S SO GOOD
LIAM PLAYS THE SAX HOLY SHIT HE’S SO HOT I’M GONNA FAINT
Priyanka with that rose.......... Consider me dead, thank you
“It’s hot as fuck” tcfyvgubh probably true
Overall, I would give this movie 7/10 because of the message. Plot is nicely done and I got see basically every single rom-com tropes. At total, I counted 23 tropes I guess? If I could look every minor detail, I would count more but I won’t get into it that much for now. (i’m running late to a meeting with friends so i have to cut short)
I loved the production design, setting felt like I’m in a classic rom-com movie and characters were written accordingly. Every actor in the movie has fit perfect to me. I especially loved Priyanka and Liam because 1) I’ve never seen any of her movies and 2) It’s been a long time since I watched a Liam Hemsworth movie (i only watched hunger games, so you think about it lmao)
I guess that’s about it! I have a list for the next weeks’ movies but if you have a request then tell me so, I will watch your recommendations first! I appreciate comments; if you have something to add, please do. I will read every single one of them.
See you next week!

bookstore, knitting, and cozy for the cozy asks!!!
jj ILY and im SO SORRY im only JUST getting to this sbfjks im terrible!!!!!!
OK SO
bookstore: favorite childhood book?
hm. i guess this depends on like what u qualify as childhood book?? ill give three from three different eras of Childhood
Goodnight Moon, Margaret Wise Brown- this was the baby book my parents read to me almost nightly when i was a baby, and my mom can probably recite it by memory at this point..... its so sweet and gentle
Nate the Great Saves the King of Sweden, Marjorie Weinman Sharmat, Marc Simont: I counted this as my first “real chapter book” that I read by myself as a kid, and as such was my self professed favorite book for many years on sentimentality alone. I don’t remember much of the plot anymore, but to the best of my recollection it was about a young aspiring detective (Nate) who happened to discover the king of Sweden hidden in a basement cupboard at his friend’s after she gets back from vacation.......... or something
The Last Olympian, Rick Riordan: to absolutely no one’s surprise, i was a HUGE percy jackson stan in elementary and middle school, and this (the fifth and final book in the percy jackson and the olympians series) held and will always hold a special place in my heart. that being said, I’m due for an all encompassing reread of a like 15 book series. most of which i already own. I have no shame.
knitting: what’s a hobby that you would like to start?
tbh not to be ironic but i’d love to learn how to knit- it seems to practical and fun and relaxing and i really love scarves and sweaters and gloves SO
but also i REALLY want to learn to play a musical instrument; ideally and predictably guitar, piano, ukulele, or drums
uhhh i did martial arts for like 6 years in middle/high school and kind of miss that though im REALLY out of practice
and the sentimental artist in me loves ballet and misses it from when i danced when i was like 8 but like... that’s never going to happen so
cozy: favorite gift you’ve ever received?
hm.
a target basket
ok story time bkdjvbkfjvb
so i did theatre in high school- like a LOT of theatre- and the theatre teacher/ artistic director/ director of shows was, as most theater teachers are, Quirky.
one of her (many) quirks was that she would carry all of her things everyday in a Harris Teeter grocery basket (for the followers who aren’t from south eastern USA/ areas where harris teeters don’t exist- they’re pretty standard grocery stores (owned by Kroger now) and the baskets are the green rectangular plastic ones youre supposed to use in the store if you’re only picking up a few items, but you’re NOT supposed to bring home)
but yeah she carried all her shit in a plastic basket- her purse, keys, water bottle, laptop, food, script, etc. Everything!! and there were always a couple other baskets floating around the classroom and the auditorium- especially during a show- that had scripts and other assorted shit stored in them. it was just a staple of life in the department and no one knew WHY she had them or why she used them or how she got them. it just was
so my senior year roles around and as a senior theatre student im lucky enough to get the opportunity to assistant direct our spring musical- the sound of music!- alongside my teacher, the chorus teacher, and another student (PLEASE dm me about questions about this, it was one of the best experiences of my life and i will literally never shut up about it if given the chance)
and about halfway through rehearsals, a friend of mine (we’ll call her Sarah for anonymity’s sake) joked that i was acting like a mini version of our teacher; which, while accurate, was annoying in the way it is when someone say’s youre acting like your mom. like “yeah OK fine!! you dont have to Say It” bc in a lot of ways our theatre teacher was like our school mom. in the good ways and the bad ways.
and so Sarah joked that i was just like her, and all i was missing was her infamous basket
and i swear i saw the idea enter her brain
Sarah: I’m going to steal you a harris teeter basket for closing night gifts*!!
me: wtf no don’t do that
s: yes only no i know i’ll steal you a TARGET one bc youre a CLASSY bitch
m: literally Do Not steal me a basket
s: too bad!!!
[*- closing night gifts are when designers/technicians/stage managers get gifts for the production team (directors, musical director, SMs, etc) as a Thank You gift, Sarah took them Incredibly Seriously]
so flash forward like another month, and it’s closing night of the show, and im emo af and trying not to show it, bc im a senior and this show was my baby in a lot of ways, and this was the last show i was going to be working in the auditorium at my school, like, ever, and it was the last show i would ever work with a lot of my friends, so yeah. so, obviously, i was running around backstage like a chicken with it’s head cut off, putting out fires and trying to be useful
and it’s like an hour, maybe, before the show starts and Sarah walks into the green room (a room backstage where actors stay when they’re not in the dressing rooms/ backstage/ onstage, and bc its an hour before closing night, its a mad house)
and im talking to somebody in the greenroom, and at this point i haven’t forgotten her threat that she was going to steal me a basket, but we haven’t talked about it since the original discussion, and ive been hoping that SHE’S forgotten about it. and so bc im working and talking to someone, at first i don’t really see Sarah come in, i notice her out of the corner of my eye, and i don’t really realize what i see at first, and then my head whips around and there she is.
grinning all smug like the cat that ate the canary.
and she’s holding a target basket, of course.
and at that point its all too much and like a combination of the love i have for the show and all the grief that it’s ending and like im so Touched that she put in the thought and work and energy to get me this gift and im also like irritated just a little bc i told her Not To and OF COURSE she does it anyway and as a combination of everything i just kind of crumple to the ground in a combination of laughing and crying and i dont even know which im doing or which i did first
and im sure half the cast thought i lost my fucking mind bc i was just kneeling on the greenroom floor like cradling a target basket and laughing hysterically and sobbing
and then we had to do the show!
but all jokes aside, it’s surprisingly functional and useful and i use it pretty regularly
and as a bonus people are always confused by it bc im carrying around a target basket in random places, so that’s a bonus
jj ilysm thank for the ask im sorry this was an ESSAY
send me a cozy ask!!

The first Broadway revival of “Children of a Lesser God,” the award-winning, boundary-breaking 1980 play by Mark Medoff about the romance and eventual marriage between a hearing teacher at a school for the deaf and a deaf graduate, is the only show on Broadway whose creative team includes a “director of artistic sign language.” It is the only show on Broadway to project supertitles of the entire script at EVERY performance, and to schedule sign language interpreters regularly. And, above all, it is of course the only show that marks the stunning Broadway debut of Lauren Ridloff, who portrays Sarah Norman, whose language (like the actress’s) is American Sign Language. These are reasons enough to welcome this production, and to consider it pioneering, even as the play it’s remounting feels dated. As “Children of a Lesser God” begins, James Leed (Joshua Jackson) has just started work at the school, where he is already shown to be a better teacher, or at least better-liked by his students, than his supervisor Mr. Franklin (Anthony Edwards.) Franklin asks James to take on Sarah as his assistant. Sarah has been at the school since she was five years old. Now 26, she long ago graduated, but, although her test scores show her as exceptionally intelligent, she has continued to hang out there, working as a maid. James takes it as his mission to change that. He wants to acquire the “communications skills to have her get into college, or at least a good trade school,” as he tells Sarah’s mother (Kecia Lewis, great as always but underutilized.) “In other words,” her mother replies, “you’re still trying to force her to speak and lip read so she can pass for hearing.” This is the crux of the conflict in the play, even after James and Sarah fall in love. Not long after “Children of a Lesser God” was first produced, deaf rights became a headline-grabbing issue, when the Gallaudet student protest of 1988 resulted in the installation of the first deaf president in the then 124-year history of this world-class university for deaf students. The Gallaudet students and their supporters were demanding respect for their culture and their language. It’s true that “Children of a Lesser God” deserves some credit for presenting a similar scenario, fictional and in miniature, years before the actual events occurred. In Act II, Orin (stand-out John McGinty), a student in the school, hires a lawyer to get the school to hire a deaf teacher! But both the fictional and the actual protests occurred decades ago. It wouldn’t be quite accurate to say that the conflict is now a dead issue in the community (by which I mean both the deaf community and the community of educators.) But the contours of the arguments have changed, thanks to everything from technology to the law to the greater cultural awareness by the society at large. As respectful as “Children of a Lesser God” is towards the deaf point of view – James is shown as well-meaning but ignorant – the play is still presented entirely from his perspective. The program informs us that “the play takes place in the mind of James Leeds.” And Jackson not only speaks the lines of his own character while simultaneously signing them; he also translates into English nearly everything that Ridloff’s character is signing. In real life, James surely wouldn’t do this, not even in his own mind (not least because the grammatical structure of English and ASL are completely different; anybody serious about mastering ASL would attempt to think in ASL, not in English, while signing.) No, the actor is doing this for the sake of the audience, most of whom presumably don’t know ASL. But, less than three years after the seamless and inspired integration of speaking/singing and signing actors in the Deaf West production of Spring Awakening on Broadway, there were surely more inventive ways that “Children of a Lesser God” director Kenny Leon (who did such fine work in Broadway revivals of The Raisin in the Sun and Fences) could have engaged its hearing theatergoers. The problem in choosing to have Jackson literally speak for Sarah is not just the implicit politics of it; it’s also a practical matter. As TV viewers of “Dawson’s Creek” and “The Affair,” know, Jackson is a charming actor, but his halting efforts to use two languages at the same time feels awkward, and turns tedious. Jackson is one of the five cast members, out of seven, who are making their Broadway debuts. The others have an easier go of it. In particular, Ridloff, a former Miss Deaf America, makes Sarah passionate, eloquent and graceful in the upper body ballet that is ASL. When near the end of the play, she insists on “speaking” for herself, it is stirring. If only the play didn’t undermine her independence.

After launching dnbunited.com in March of 2016 our founder and artist Jason Bakes aka BC⚡︎➒ started the monthly podcast THE UNITED STATE OF DNB. The show was another platform to follow the artist interviews and special features.First the podcast was made available via Soundcloud and mix cloud only.As the show grew in popularity it was clear it had a following that was rapidly emerging as a source for many listeners to preview the music they just read about and finally buy. With the many forms and sub genres that the evolving sound of drum+bass is morphing into I wanted to be able to highlight each style as well as each artist and where they reside. With all the new drum+bass being released today its worth mentioning what country and city its being produced. This is a bold new world with new artists representing almost every city across the globe. Back in the early days of dnb the UK was the main point of all things 174bpm and more. There was an explosion of dnb and jungle coming out of towns like Bristol all over the UK. I was there in the late nineties and artists like Roni Size, Groove rider, Goldie , Fabio, Adam F. and Doc Scott were helping forge the sound of things to come. I always new as an artist and writer that this story would go on to be a interesting one.So we all know the basic history fast forward to todays elements of surprise is what I wanted to focus on with dnbunited.com.Hospital records and others have releases "The Future Sound" series to highlight different countries new artists approach to the modern day drum+bass we feature on the website today. The many labels I work with each have a signature sound that is their hallmark when you here it you know who the artist is signed with. Thats a really good way of branding your label. Do it with the sound.Drum+bass is in my bias opinion is a more sophisticated brand of music. I can list many reasons why but I won't everyone likes it for their own reasons. Ones no more important than the other. Hence calling one genre of dnb "intelligent" is like saying the others are not. So when I started producing THE UNITED STATE OF DNB I also invited the artists we review and interview to create some exclusive guest mixes for DNB◉UNITED.COM. Before we knew it we were getting some really banging mixes. Our podcast went from a thousand listeners to nine thousand overnight! We are now available on Tunein Radio worldwide,Mixcloud,Soundcloud and on Friday night Dj Rea of Vancouver number one dnb show "The late night show"citr.ca or FM 101.9FM rebroadcasts our podcast live.As of today I finally created our You Tube channel THE UNITED STATE OF DNB TV. I love to see the comments from the audience telling me they never herd of that artist we played or how a track turned a bad day into a good one.The best though is when someone claims they never herd of dnb and now they are falling hard in love with it.Music is a gift. If we don't share it it looses its value. So I will keep on producing the show now on a larger platform in hopes that I reach another set of new ears ready to buy the ticket and take the ride.Cheers BC⚡︎➒

DNB United Records, dnbunited.com and The United State of Drum and Bass Podcast was launched world wide on March 16, 2016 by founder and CEO Jason Bakes, a/k/a/ DNB artist and producer BC#9. Jason specifically designed the website to build an institution all of the DNB forms, artists, labels and industry professionals to come together to celebrate the art, culture, and evolving sound of Drum and Bass. DNB United is one of the only websites that has most of the major DNB labels and artists submitting their advanced releases for critical review. DNB United also conducts in-depth interviews from the perspective of another artist, with our founder creating the questions that become the dialog that exclusive interviews with both established and up and coming artists and producers, as well as other industry professionals. The main focus of these interviews is DNB and all of its many facets. DNB United also asks each artist at the conclusion of their interview to create a guest producer’s mix to be included in DNB United’s original podcast, The United State of Drum and Bass, produced and hosted by our founder, DJ BC#9. This original podcast continues to grow, becoming more popular and reaching more listeners each month.
2017 will include an ongoing series of production steps, secrets, and that age old question, “How do you get that bass sound!?!”
Xtene Sixtene is the editor in chief, keeping all things at DNB United proper and professional. Xtene is also a regular contributor, writing reviews and column to come about the visual art scene in Drum and Bass, having attended art school, including the Royal College of Art in London.
Tim Dunleavy is another original staff member and contributor. Tim is an excellent writer and a lifelong professional organic musician.
Other contributors include artists, producers, and fans of Drum and Bass, hailing from such places as the UK, Berlin, Tokyo, Amsterdam as well as the United States, where DNB United is currently based. We are represented globally, always staying true to our message to think globally, and act locally. As all of our subscribers know, DNB United is growing worldwide.
There are now many sub-genres of DNB, including neurofunk, liquid, and many more, offering something for all DNB enthusiasts, including newcomers as well as old-school aficionados.
Our list of affiliates is also growing constantly, including, but not limited to, Hospital and Med School, Metalheadz, Terminal, Eatbrain, Ram. Viper, Program, Invisible and more.

Future plans for DNB United also include acting as an artist-centered label that is, even now, beginning to line up a roster of artists interested in signing to DNB United Records, not only to be represented by the label, but to become members, chosen by DNB United, for their sheer and undying love of the genre of Drum and Bass…not just the music, but the whole universe of it…to become proud members of a true artist collaborative where we all work together, as well as independently, having both autonomy and community. DNB United is growing into a crew, a family, where the music is always the heartbeat, driving the flow of all of the many intertwining and individually pioneering artists that we all are…individual and unique, but like our name and philosophy both say…United! We are united in the love of not just the ever-growing, changing and evolving genre of DNB, but we stand together to foster, encourage, inspire and form the community, family, culture and movement that is Drum and Bass. As DJ BC#9 can often be heard saying during The United Sate of Drum and Bass podcast…”Stay strong, stay raw, stand tall…Drum and Bass takes all!” And here at DNB United, all lovers of DNB, from artist, to critic, to producer or promoter, to cover art and video designers, to fans…all are welcomed with open arms and waving flags to join us at the one and only DRUM AND BASS UNITED.

Oscars 2018
The Oscars are tonight, who's excited?? I don't tend to watch them except vicariously through tumblr, but I'm actually planning to watch live tonight. Part of it is that I feel like there's a lot of really good films nominated this year, part of it is that I've been getting more interested in the film industry as a whole. Plus my favorite podcast had a great episode about the nominations, plus several about individual nominees (Call Me by Your Name, Phantom Thread, The Post, The Shape of Water, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and various others). I sort of challenged myself to watch as many of the nominations as possible before the Oscars, though as there are iirc 69 things nominated, I knew I wouldn't get through them all. I do think I watched more than most years though, with a total of 7. Which doesn't seem like a lot, but I'm pretty sure I saw like 3 last year lol Most of them I even saw in theaters since I've been watching a lot more in theaters lately. (I will squee about MoviePass in another post sometime lol) I'll likely be liveblogging on my “Oscars 2018″ tag, so feel free to watch me be completely wrong in real time! Which is in not much time at all, wow this post took a long time to do...
Under the cut is my list of watched nominees plus short reviews, and my predictions.
Nominee Reviews
Beauty and the Beast I really only went to see this movie bc my friend had an extra ticket and I was her third string option lol I don't particularly care for Disney films in general and hadn't seen anything to interest me from the previews. I was unexcited about seeing it, and I remained underwhelmed lol I had a myriad of problems with it, from bad costume design (Belle's dress was just so so bad) to uncanny valley CGI (Cogsworth and Lumiere esp) to general boringness (not that that's entirely the fault of the adaption, since it's well, an adaption, but they didn't do anything to help). The only redeeming feature was Gaston and LeFou, both of whom I did really enjoy overall, and I even have complaints about that! Mostly that there was all the hullabaloo about "gay content, le gasp" and there was... none. One split second same sex dance does not gay content make imo. That is paltry rep and I'm not satisfied with that anymore tbh. The Breadwinner I just watched this last week when I happened upon it on Netflix, and I'm so glad I did. It was a beautiful movie, and so so heartwarming/heartbreaking. I was legit crying by the end. The story was wonderful, as was the animation. I tend to do other things on the computer when I watch movies, but I really got sucked into watching. I'm disappointed it didn't get more attention, but I really do highly recommend it. Get Out Just saw this one recently as well after hearing so many good things about it. All of which were certainly deserved. My horror movie experience is not terribly deep, but this was one of the best I've seen. It was so clever and so well acted, it's kind of amazing that Jordan Peele put out such a fantastic movie for his directorial debut. I actually watched Scream, which Get Out has been compared to a lot, on the same day, and tbh this was a much better and more intellectual film. Highly recommended. The Greatest Showman This is actually the only one I've seen twice (so far). I expected to like it since Hugh Jackman and musicals are two of my favorite things, but I liked it so much more than I even expected. Even on my second watch, I was on the edge of my seat for the suspenseful bits and crying for the angsty ones. The acting and singing was fantastic, as was the storyline. I know it deviates a lot from what actually happened, but honestly this movie was so heartwarming and beautiful that I don't even care. My only complaint is that there's been so little attention on the secondary characters, bc I found them so so fascinating! Logan Saw this one the other day after meaning to watch it since it came out. I was... disappointed tbh. I found the plot kind of stiff and confusing, and the acting for the most part was not particularly memorable. I'd heard a lot of good things about this, but I really didn't care for it. Definitely not one of the better XMCU films imo. The Shape of Water If you follow me on tumblr, you may have seen that I was like desperate to see this since I'm a huge del Toro fangirl, and I was really pissed that it took so long to come out where I am. But I finally got to see it and it was just as wonderful as I'd expected!! My only disappointment is that we didn't get to actually see any fish dick lol But seriously, this was a supremely beautiful movie with fantastic acting and fantastic characters. I think that's one of the things I liked best about it, that each of the characters was so distinct and so compelling. Like I had a really visceral reaction to the fingers scene (you should know what I mean if you've seen it...). I was so impressed by that, that the writing and the acting gave such life and depth to the characters and their stories. I was really just enthralled the whole way through <3 Star Wars: The Last Jedi And if you follow me on tumblr, you also know that I hated this movie lol Which was actually really disappointing, bc The Force Awakens was really good and I think that movie set up a really good start for this trilogy. Unfortunately, I don't think TLJ followed through with any of the interesting plotlines that had been set up. Mostly, this felt like an entirely pointless movie to me. It didn't move the plot forward at all really, and I felt it even went backwards (or sideways) on a lot of things. The characters were dull and many of their storylines (esp Finn, which was esp disappointing) didn't really go anywhere or ended up being totally superflous imo. I felt like Rian Johnson was more interesting in making a movie that would get him attention than in making a good Star Wars movie. It feels like just another mediocre white male director being handed the helm of a big franchise and fucking it up bc they have no respect for the franchise or its fans. Honestly, this movie was just so bad that I've lost almost all interest in Star Wars :/
Predictions
Best Picture: The Shape of Water It's gotten so much critical aclaim and already won so many awards, I feel pretty confident in this one. I would not be salty about Get Out winning instead, but although it got pretty great critical acalaim as well, I still think the Academy is still too racist, plus the fact that it's a horror movie, which is not a genre that is generally seen as legitimate in awards circles. Lead Actor: Gary Oldman, “Darkest Hour” I had no interest in Darkest Hour since I hate war films, but everyone seems to love Gary Oldman in it. I don't necessarily think it's a deserved win compared to some of the other nominations, but I do think it's the likeliest. Lead Actress: Meryl Streep, “The Post” It's fucking Merly Streep, is there more that needs to be said? Supporting Actor: Woody Harrelson, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” I don't even know what this movie is about, but ppl seem to be loving it so... Supporting Actress: Lesley Manville, “Phantom Thread” By all accounts a fantastic movie and a fantastic actress, though I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. Director: “The Shape of Water,” Guillermo del Toro No contest, really, since he's won all (or at least most?) of the other best director awards for the year. And I mean, he's my favorite director, so I'm certainly not mad lol Animated Feature: “Coco,” Lee Unkrich, Darla K. Anderson I abolutely think The Breadwinner or Loving Vincent deserves it more, but I think this is one of the categories where most of the voters will not have watched the movies and it's a Disney movie, so of course it will win. Animated Short: “Revolting Rhymes,” Jakob Schuh, Jan Lachauer Since it's the only one I've even seen anything about lol Adapted Screenplay: “Call Me by Your Name,” James Ivory The only other one I think that has a chance in this category is The Disaster Artist, honestly. And I think that Call Me by Your Name is such an arty film gives it the boost. Original Screenplay: "The Shape of Water,” Guillermo del Toro, Vanessa Taylor Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri have good chances here, too, but again, The Shape of Water has gotten so much acclaim. Cinematography: “Blade Runner 2049,” Roger Deakins Bc apparently Blade Runner is the epitomy of cyberpunk. Which is bullshit and The Shape of Water deserves it more but whatever. Best Documentary Feature: “Icarus,” Bryan Fogel, Dan Cogan Really I think it could go to any of them fairly equally, so it's more of a tossup imo. Best Documentary Short Subject: “Heroin(e),” Elaine McMillion Sheldon, Kerrin Sheldon Again, only one I've heard anything about in the category. Best Live Action Short Film: ? I literally have heard nothing so who knows! Best Foreign Language Film: “Loveless” (Russia) Yet again, only one I've heard anything about. Film Editing: “The Shape of Water,” Sidney Wolinsky I think this one's a bit of a free for all, so I just think The Shape of Water should get it lol Sound Editing: “Baby Driver,” Julian Slater Since this is basically the entire draw of Baby Drive afaik. Sound Mixing: “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Stuart Wilson, Ren Klyce, David Parker, Michael Semanick I don't think it's deserved tbh, but I think it's most likely. Production Design: “Beauty and the Beast,” Sarah Greenwood; Katie Spencer Again, definitely not deserved, but everyone went googoo over it's overall shitty production design so. Original Score: “Phantom Thread,” Jonny Greenwood I certainly wouldn't be mad if The Shape of Water won instead, but from what I've seen and heard, I think Phantom Thread has a really good chance. Original Song: “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman,” Benj Pasek, Justin Paul Really not sure whose going to actually win, but I really really think The Greatest Showman deserves it most. This Is Me is a spectacular song. Really, the whole soundtrack was amazing. Makeup and Hair: “Victoria and Abdul,” Daniel Phillips and Lou Sheppard Really the only choice out of the nominees. Costume Design: “Phantom Thread,” Mark Bridges I mean, it's basically what the movie is about, so it should win. Beaty and the Beast is the most likely other choice since it got a lot of attention when it came out, though I found the costume design there appaling. Visual Effects: “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Ben Morris, Mike Mulholland, Chris Corbould, Neal ScanlanIt's a tossup between Star Wars and Blade Runner 2049, but I think the greater nostalgia will win out. Who actually deserves it? Fuck if I know.
