“Huh… so you’re saying the pre-mixed stuff’s not gonna kill me?”

“You’re literally fine.” Layni shook her head at the question. “Would I give you something that would kill you?”

“Well that’s the question, now isn’t it?” Connor accused, squinting at her in mock suspicion. The response was a playful eye roll and a light shove on his shoulder, not even enough to knock him off balance

“Connor, didn’t you make that potion when you were running around the realm trying to cure god?”

“It’s ‘brew’ a potion.”

“Since when do you even care?”

“Since I got the chance to wind you up about it, duh.”

Layni scoffed at him, nudging her shoulder against his upper arm. “Idiot. Seriously, you’ll be fine. This is the same stuff dad used to use.”

And Connor knew that, so he nodded, focusing his attention on carefully measuring out the liquids before him. Instinct left him minding the mixture of Fallow rose and whatever other ingredients went into the pre-prepared liquid

He reached for the tweezers next, then took a sprig of stinging nettles between the tiny pincers. Into the bowl they went, a faint hissing and smoking coming from the greenery as it melted into the inky liquid. One step closer

“You gonna tell me what you’re making?” Layni asked, and he just couldn’t resist the opportunity. “It’s brewing.”

“Oh, shut up.” She lightly shoved his shoulder again. “Brewing, then. What are you brewing?”

“Well you’ve seen the witchlet’s glyph magic, so I thought I’d try and see if I can get potions that do the same things.”

“So you want to one-up Persephone?” Layni raised a brow. “Doesn’t she literally teach glyph magic in a school or something?”

“She’s a teaching assistant,” Connor corrected, leaning forward a little to consult his book. “Either way, I’ve got this cool book of potion recipes, and I’m gonna use it.”

Pine needles were next, and he sprinkled a pinch of them into the concoction. Layni watched as he stirred it in, his tongue out in concentration. She considered teasing him about it, but her curiosity win out over her desire to wind him up

“Are you actually gonna tell me, or…?”

“Huh? Oh, it’s supposed to grow plants and stuff like you can do,” Connor finally answered, tapping a finger at the page in his opened book. Layni took a peek at the pages, a smirk coming to her face

“What, because you know my magic is better?”

“Oh, suuure. I’m trying all of them, you’re not special.”

But they both knew, despite his words, that Connor was resisting a smirk of his own. He grabbed a vial of Remaligo sap next, pouring a few drops into the bowl. The golden sap gave the black liquid a richer, more earthy colour

“Is that it? Have you done it?”

“Just needs one more thing…”

Connor ran his finger along the page of the book, tapping a few times when he found the right spot. “Aha!”

He looked around his cluttered desk, carefully pushing things out the way to check behind them for any signs of the ingredient he needed. After a minute of no luck, however, he turned to Layni, giving her his best ‘I’m your little brother who loves you very much’ look

“Layniiiiiii…?”

She rolled her eyes at his attempts to butter her up, unable to help an amused smile. He really hadn’t changed a bit from the dumb little kid she used to look after. “Yeeees?”

“Can you grow some foxglove for me, please?”

“Why, so you can steal my powers with your potions?”

He laughed at that. “Oh, come on! You know it’s not like that! Please?”

“Fine, but you owe me a coffee.”

“Deal!” he agreed eagerly. “Gratitude!”

Layni usually wears simple clothing under a thick apron to keep herself clean while working. She also wears gloves to protect her hands. She’ll often grow flowers in her hair for fun as well, and since they’re so well-enmeshed due to her power they’re not much of a hazard

Personality

Layni is a very resilient person who works hard for the people in her life. She likes to keep herself busy and is very much a giver rather than a taker, often finding herself as the mum friend of the group, acting as the responsible one or the voice of reason. She can talk everyone through their problems except herself, and is a good listener who everyone seems to gravitate towards when they need advice or a venting session. Her biggest struggle is remembering that the reliable friend also needs others to rely on themselves

Backstory

While Connor only really knew Rose Warden after her illness, Layni still remembers the times before then; their mother had been one of the most excitable and optimistic people she’d ever known. She still sees so much of her in Connor, especially in their matching smiles

The children would usually stay home to look after Rose, who gave them lessons in potions as the family tried to find a cure for her illness, but once Connor was big enough to do so alone and Rose began teaching him about his own abilities, Layni spent most of her time with her father, helping him in the carpentry when things got too tough for just one person to do alone. He taught her how to use her elemental abilities to make the craft easier, and helped her develop her attunement to florakinesis

Layni was sixteen when her mother passed away. She and her father grew a Remaligo tree over her grave, letting it stand in her memory. It was around this time that Connor began to struggle with his powers, and so Layni’s time was largely split between helping her father manage the house and the business as a newly widowed man and looking after Connor and doing what little she could to help him control his powers

A year later, when Layni was seventeen and Connor was twelve, she discovered that their father had given in to his grief. She managed to keep herself together long enough to send Connor elsewhere for the day without him knowing what had happened. By the time he returned, Layni had made arrangements and the situation had been appropriately dealt with. Others in the village were there to help her very delicately break the news to Connor without giving any actual details beyond what he needed to know. Layni braced herself to answer any questions he had, but there weren’t many, and he appeared mostly satisfied with her vague explanations

From that day on, Layni was the one to look after the family business. Connor saw how hard she was working, and how she really didn’t enjoy the customer service aspect of the job, and took it upon himself to man the front desk. Layni had initially objected since she didn’t want to make it the responsibility of a child, but Connor was stubborn about it, sneaking in to beat Layni to the customers when they entered. Layni had to admit that it was helpful, and he always knew to come to her if he didn’t know how to sort out something himself. With Connor also helping to clean up around the workshop, the workload on Layni became much lighter, and by the time the two siblings were eighteen and thirteen, Connor was able to work fully independently to help his sister

Several years passed, and Connor had another, albeit now much rarer, struggle with controlling his power. Layni was doing what she could to help him until a stranger came in and was able to help with her tephrakinesis abilities. The nomad introduced herself as Kennedy, and the siblings offered her a place to stay for a while in exchange for her helping Connor with his abilities. She agreed

Layni and Kennedy got to spend a lot of time together, especially when the former discovered Kennedy’s carving hobby and offered her a role in the carpentry. The pair grew very close over time, Kennedy sharing secrets with Layni that even Connor, who Kennedy privately considered her best friend, didn’t know. They shared interests in plants and nature and carving, and bonded over all of these things

Fun Facts

• The carpentry always has a faint scent of black coffee due to how much Layni drinks. Connor and Kennedy tease her often about how she can drink it

• Layni’s love language is gift giving, but quickly learned that Kennedy wasn’t the most comfortable receiving gifts, so she began framing it as Kennedy doing her a favour by allowing her to not throw out perfectly good things. Connor has, on more than one occasion, taken the gift under the impression that it was up for grabs, only for Kennedy to get uncharacteristically possessive of it and snatch it back from him

• Layni is the only one to know Kennedy’s past, as well as some other secrets. Their favourite secret is an ongoing prank they’ve been playing on Connor for nearly a year now without his knowledge

I hate the prom because there was no thought put into creating a queer story. It’s the cw of musicals where they were like “ah, being gay is popular now, let’s write a musical about it” except they seeped it in trauma and homophobia and then thought those two things would go well with cheesy music and glitter. There is no real emotional weight to the gay story line, and the character’s traumas are thrown around like they’re nothing and covered up with a smile. The true through line of the story, what the show is ACTUALLY about are the four washed up broadway actors who come to their small town to “Save the Lesbian” for their own selfish needs. They make a mockery of people who actually protest injustice and the whole thing is framed in a very anti-protest way, like if they could just reach hearts and minds with kindness and song instead of yelling and protest signs, they’ll actually accomplish something. And i just fucking hate that they’re their for their own publicity instead of actual good deeds, because then they become the focus of the story, not the lesbian, Emma. literally not even half of the songs go the Emma and Alyssa, the lesbians who the story is supposed to be about. It’s the Jenny’s Wedding of Musicals, where the whole story is about everyone else’s homophobia and how they come to “accept it” instead of the actual lesbian love the story is supposed to be about. the weird straight romance between the principle and the old actress he’s obsessed with gets more narrative weight and stage time than Emma and Alyssa. And they just brush off homophobia at the end like it’s nothing! like hey, it’s fine that emma’s classmates were actively harrassing her, they heard a song about acceptance, and now they’re at her gay prom! it’s fine that the one older actor’s mother was homophobic and he ran away from home at 16, she came back without him knowing and confronted him and they had a 30 second reunion where she begged for forgiveness and he was like  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ okay. Alyssa’s mother who was so so so SO fucking homophobic the whole movie just  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ comes around! The whole musical makes a MOCKERY of queer trauma and the homophobia we face and the ways that we go about advocating for change and facing homophobic people. It’s poorly written and the music is bad (they cut in half the only good fucking song in the musical) and i truly think that the people who adore it are just fine with settling for scraps that ryan “i hate lesbians” murphy chucks out the window at us but i think the whole musical is shitty and offensive and poorly done and we deserve better than half baked stories about queer trauma that give us no real narrative weight or catharsis. So yeah i fucking hate the prom. Stop using queer stories to make money without actually giving a shit about queer stories.

Any supernatural fic recs? I have never dabbled but the resurgence of it all has got me, dare I say, intrigued...

I have to say that right now the only one I can actually recommend is A Four Letter Word For Intercourse because I just finished that one this morning and it’s geniunely one of the best fics I’ve ever read, but it’s extremly extremly explicit, 20k, and an alternate universe, if you’re into that kind of thing.

So if anyone ELSE has spn fics they’d like to recommend to me, please please please tell me about them. Right now I’m particularly craving a fic that’s established destiel relationship with sam’s perspective, seeing it happen and I swear to god if someone found a fic like that I would kiss you on the mouth
