I audited a lit class for fun bc I can do that cheap through work and tbh lit classes are the thing I miss most about being in school
ANYWAY, point being, because I’m auditing I technically don’t have to submit assignments I guess but that feels rude and also I like literary analysis
which is the story of how I just wrote an 11-page academic paper that doesn’t actually count for a grade. while on vacation. but half of it’s about succession so I had fun
#I JUST LIKE LITERARY ANALYSIS I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU#I love writing lit papers#I love gratuitous use of words like 'problematize' and 'typify'#I love academic style writing#it's not worth doing a master's in literature because that's a lot of time/effort/money for something that doesn't serve me career-wise but#since I can do it Super Cheap through my job I will just keep auditing grad classes that sound interesting for my own enjoyment

I LOVE YOUR PORN AU!!!!! LIKE SO MUCH - and i'm just. if you don't mind me asking, how - the way you flesh out the characters, their motivations, and feelings in every scene in such an eloquent way, and just little things here and there, a habit or an activity that adds dimension to who they are, and - your prose is wonderful. you achieve this addictive, engrossing narrative space that readers just absolutely melt into, and i have to ask - how did you develop your writing style? 1/2
what books did you read that formatively shaped the way you write? or you know, what did you do to improve your writing? i'm so in awe of how you world-built and established the porn au - like lqg & hc being national taolu champions?? how do you come up with that stuff? i cannot comprehend the amount of research and effort that must've gone into porn au, and i'm just so deeply thankful that you decided to share that with us. i apologize if i'm coming on too strong, but wow. thank you 2/2
--
oh my god please don't apologize, when i saw your ask i rolled on the floor giggling hysterically for a solid 15 min, bless your heart
part of the answer to your question—i've taken like, 8 years' worth of creative writing classes/workshops! there was also a transnational literary component to my degree so whenever possible, i took literature classes fksjdfksd so whatever you see and like is definitely the result of a lot of work. My writing from not even 10 years ago but like, 5? horrid, ridiculous, wild, cringe. The Porn AU itself is the second draft of a MUCH more lackluster piece.
about my writing style. gosh, you really know how to make a writer blush. "I like your writing style" is literally an instant kill LMFAO okay okay, the useful answer: my primary criteria for choosing what to write is, don't be obvious, be interesting. Fiction tells us to show, not tell, right? Poetry is about concretizing the abstract. Screenwriting says cut all useless lines. A lot of writing rules and advice—never start with the weather, avoid detailed descriptions of the characters, don't use adverbs, etc.—are all really about this exact sentiment.
I once took a seminar on writing for horror movies. The golden rule of the horror genre is Never Show the Monster, because whatever the audience is imagining is always going to be scarier than what you actually show them. There are obviously exceptions to this (to all writing rules), but in my mind, it's all the same principle.
LONG answer under the cut
So you start with building a scene. I approach it like essay-writing—I state my thesis for the motivations/main propulsion of the plot. "In this scene, LQG and SY are motivated to save Cang Qiong's porn production, so they have sex on camera." Then you build the sub-motivations: "LQG is also doing this because he's pining after SY."
I learned this "thesis-writing" from theater, specifically from writing 10-min plays. Theater is all about characters being driven by their wants and needs, and the reason I say 10-min plays in particular is because longer forms of writing will give you more leeway, but in 10-min, you pretty much need your character motivations established from their very first line. That's why you need that very clear thesis for yourself—if you don't even know what the character wants from the get-go, then you can't establish who they are, what they want, and where they're going to go in a dynamic and interesting way.
So this thesis drives EVERYTHING that happens in your scene, just like an actual thesis for an essay, just like topic sentences for your paragraphs. Once I do this, I have the emotional direction & narrative scope of how much this scene will cover, I have a sense of where it begins and ends. "Begin with the dynamics of their sex. LQG starts showing signs of his feelings. Reveal LQG backstory for exactly what those feelings are and why he isn't telling SY. The rest of the scene implies that LQG's feelings may not be so unrequited, but also sets up the fundamental problem at the heart of the whole fic—SY's inability to comprehend his own feelings." This is kind of my new thesis now. They're having sex; LQG pines; SY doesn't know he himself is pining.
Now it's time to manifest. This is the "storytelling" part, and the hardest lmfao.
Personally, my approach is largely shaped by my very cool screenwriting teacher, who hammered into us: don't fucking waste lines. The Golden Rule of screenwriting is that every line should reveal something new. I found my old writing kind of repetitive, especially on the emotional front, so this is kind of my editing mantra now—is this line either propelling the story or revealing character? If it's revealing character, is it a revelation that has to happen right now, or is it slowing the momentum of the scene?
But these aren't rhetorical questions! "Momentum" doesn't just mean tumble forward as fast as you can, it also means taking the time to draw the bowstring back further, so your next move has even more propulsion. That's why you get the little "LQG has been in love with SY..." cut scene in the middle of the fucking (at least, that's my reasoning for putting it there). Every line has to bring a fresh revelation that "proves" your thesis further.
That brings me to the details. You said you like the details I inject into the world-building, and honestly that's so gratifying to hear, because that means I'm successfully manifesting my intentions, y'know? "Every line has to bring new info" kind of sounds like a tall order, but the most effective way I've seen it done in books and onstage/onscreen is with these hyper-specific details. If you're writing a scene in which someone feels dirty, never have them just say that—have them say they want to take a shower. Show them running out of bleach again as they scrub down the stall after they wash. Begin the scene like "Steve always washes his throat first now." Then pack the scene with even more revelatory details: "Soap in hand, he heard the pipes above his head groan for a half note on adagio, and readied himself for the blast of icy water that always followed." Shitty shower, probably not rich, is likely a classical musician.
By the same token, I want to build LQG's character. The "Liu Qingge has been in love with Shen Yuan" section is the first insight we get into his background and perspective, right, so: I need to establish LQG's emotional context for filming this scene -> I can characterize him as a nut for martial arts in the same stroke -> so this takes place at a gym, beating up sandbags is a classic way of showing manly emotional distress -> so give me more details on this gym -> Puqi Gym, XL the martial god is obviously the owner -> how do I have XL & LQG a relationship beyond gym owner & client? They spar together -> I want XL & HC's position in this AU to mirror their god/ghost king statuses in TGCF canon -> how can I concretize their fighting prowesses in real-world details? -> they're martial arts champions -> what's an actual competitive martial art form that involves weaponry? -> wushu -> wikipedia Wushu, find taolu weapons sparring
(I just realized that in my songxiao daycare AU, Hualian are Olympic gold medalists by the same narrative logic laksjdnflaksjdnflsd)
So, that's the flow of logic behind my world-building lmao. It's all in the details. Leverage is one of my all-time favorite TV shows and the way they build their stories is super inspiring. If their thesis is "the rich and powerful take what they want, we steal it back for you," they manifest it in the most specific and concrete narratives: mine workers who like the work but are fighting for workplace safety vs. the money-grubbing mine owner who will blow up their livelihoods if it means a bigger payday; the little girl from Iraq with refugee status forced to be an accomplice to antique smuggling vs. international smuggler with a fetish for British royalty.
Last pieces of writing advice I've gotten: pay attention to the real world. A writing exercise we did was just sit in a public spot and make concrete observations on our surroundings. There are stories in everything!!! I learned to observe things like weird holes in the concrete (earthquake? drilling accident? bullet mark?), odd patches of moss or bird shit (look overheard: it's an AC unit dripping water for the former and nesting swallows for the latter), ladies in flipflops walking alongside ladies in high heels (excited mother walking her antsy daughter to the bus for the daughter's first job interview—the daughter's shirt collar is unfashionable and she's taking the bus, so there's a good chance the shoes were passed down, maybe from an office lady aunt. Maybe she's even overdressed for the interview, so will her outfit be an unintended source of tension once she gets to the interview? Is it a group interview, to make the comparison more stark?).
Also, write what you know. You know why SY is a video editor in porn AU? Because I'm a video editor. One of my more popular MDZS fics is set in a plant shop 'cause I worked in a plant shop. SL was First AD in Bachelor!AU 'cause I was First AD on a set once. Concrete details like the editing software having a split-screen, always answering questions about how often to water plants, and being up until 3AM editing call-sheets are the ones that will fully immerse your readers.
And if you can't do the actual things, just watch someone who is, listen to them talk, pick up lingo, and fake it. I watched like a 15-min vox video on fencing for the fencing!AU and a 45-min music theory video on the hospital pianist!AU (also I started learning piano sklfjnlsdjlfkjsd). Of course, I just finished reading a wangxian fic that had me going, "holy fucking shit, the author is literally getting their masters in a music program" so my 45-min youtube video ain't shit, but if you just need a little bit of character establishment, then it's enough to do the trick.
Anyways, tl;dr. Find the details, find the tension. Never tell outright what the tension is supposed to be, manifest it instead. Make the manifestation as interesting as possible, and if it's meant to be funny, make it funnier.
Sorry this turned into a fucking lecture lskjnflskdjnflskd but last thing, someone asked me before if I had formative authors, and this was the list I wrote at the time:
Angels in America (play) by Tony Kushner
The God of Small Things (novel) by Arundhati Roy
The Penelopiad (novel) by Margaret Atwood
“Litany in Which Certain Things are Crossed Out” (poem) by Richard Siken
Night Sky with Exit Wounds (poetry) by Ocean Vuong
Giovanni’s Room (novel) by James Baldwin (and then Go Tell it on the Mountain and then his essays)
Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger
And, ooh, now that I have this list I think I can even roughly sort it as such: Kushner, Atwood, Siken, and Salinger I really latched onto for their dialogue and very present narrator voice—same is true for Go Tell it on the Mountain. Roy, Vuong, and Giovanni’s Room, I think, are texts more representative of the kind of saturated figurative language I like, and emulate. Of course they all do imagery and voice and overall structure amazingly, but that’s the rough dividing line I’d draw.
But yeah James Baldwin is my fucking hero.
#long post#about me#writing#jesus sorry i spent way too long on this laksjdnflaskjdnflaskjndflas#but anyways i'm super grateful you gave me the chance to introspect and articulate all this#i'm exceedingly grateful too to all the writing mentors i've gotten to have#personal#these are the principles and rules i've learned and#i still definitely screw the pooch#on them#so you know this is just what's on my mind#this is how i school myself

Say mun, which is your overall favourite scarecrow design? I mean the costume as well as Jonathan Crane appearance. And which is your favourite scarecrow/Jonathan Crane character portrayal?
Great question, thank you for asking!
My favorite designs for Scarecrow have to be the ones from The New Batman Adventures and Arkham Knight. I lean towards the spooky ones as opposed to the campy ones, but I do have a soft spot for the second version of his Batman: The Animated Series due to childhood nostalgia. A lot of people tout the Long Halloween design as their absolute favorite, and I suppose it’s definitely worth all the hype, but I just can’t get behind the powerful Tim Burton vibe I get from it. I can’t separate the concept of friendly Halloween spirits trying to have a nice Christmas from the look so I can’t see it as anything but extremely adorable and soft.
So far as the design for Jonathan’s own visage and how it’s changed through the comics, I find it somewhat irrelevant, but also extremely pertinent to the telling of his character. I don’t especially think it matters what he looks like, as long as he’s not pretty or suits the ideal of masculinity. I do, however, really like how he was illustrated in Batman Annual #19: Masters of Fear. @jonathan-cranes-mistress-of-fear did a great analysis on the piece and it features a series of choice images.
This last question regarding his character portrayal really excites me, because I get to talk about something that I really loved about Scarecrow: Year One. Yes, it features his actual backstory and not just that time he have a kid with a heart condition a heart attack in the classroom and lost tenure -- but, more importantly, it shows him acting not out of some random comicbook villain routine of poison-the-water-supply or rob-the-banks or whatever. He’s not just spraying randos in the face with toxin -- it’s people he actually knew and worked with, people who should have been there for him emotionally, and people he felt jealousy towards. It even shows us that he’s prepared to kill an innocent infant without remorse.
But, Year One is a gimme, of course. Any Scarecrow roleplayer will gush about Year One if given the chance, so let me give you a different answer that pertains a lot more to my own portrayal of his character.
I really liked Jonathan in Study Hall, a short comic by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm featured in Mad Love and Other Stories. I scoured google for a good 20 minutes and found nothing I could link to for it, so I’ll just give you the lowdown of what goes on so you don’t have to go to Amazon and give Jeff Bezos money for a 10 minute read. Fuck capitalism.
The long and short of it is that Jonathan just up and quits crimes. He’s old and he’s tired and he’s sick of it, so he moves to another town and takes up a new name and gets a job as a professor of English literature, doing what he loves. And for a while, he’s actually really happy. He even has this really close friendship with one of his students, Molly. But, uh oh, Molly is an attractive woman with a brain, so Jonathan instantly falls in love with her. He does, however, seem to have a moment of clarity where he realizes that he can’t actually be with her. So he seems resigned to that fact after talking with her about it like a grown up for the first time in his goddamn life, and attempts to go about his business like a sane man. However, he’s too much of a goddamn simp to let that happen, because when Molly shows up to his office hours with bruises, he discovers that the boyfriend she chose over him beats her. Time to overstep boundaries and break the law! He kidnaps her boyfriend and tortures him in his classroom with fear toxin. Batman actually shows up before the torture begins, prepared to stop it from happening, when he hears why Jonathan is torturing the guy. At that point Batman decides, hey, a bit of toxin can do this piece of shit good. I’ll sit back and intervene when Jonathan actually tries to do a murder. Which he did, of course.
With the plot summed up, I’m sure you can see where I find the little nuggets of gold in the narrative regarding his character. He falls in love easily and fast, and doesn’t do it healthily. He’s concerned mainly with how things effect him rather than others -- yes, you may assume that he acted out of protectiveness for Molly, but you can also assume he acted out of spite for being deigned inferior to even men who physically abuse her. It also, though, shows that he either cannot force himself to be mentally well, or does not actually want to. Given that he, himself, was formally trained to be a mental healthcare professional and therefore he ought to be able to navigate the paths of getting real, valuable mental help, I choose to err with the latter option. He would rather be bitter about being a criminal pariah than put forth the effort to turn his life around. Even if it meant potentially being with someone who could actually fulfill him emotionally and mentally.

May 27 // Kabuki
Oh man oh man oh man. To start off, watching kabuki in real life was honestly a ton of fun. It’s like the Japanese analogue to shakespearean plays: very culturally rooted, lots of deep motifs, and the stories are typically history-based. The particulars of how the plays go aren’t at all like what oldern western style productions tend to do, but I think that’s part of the appeal. It’s a uniquely Japanese take on stage productions.
Overall, we got to see three different kabuki shows back-to-back, with short intermissions. The seats were awfully cramped; I kid you not when I was sitting perfectly straight and upright my knees were flush with the seat in front of me. Supremely uncomfortable in the moment, but I think that looking back on this day in the future will entail a lot more appreciation of what I did get to see. Kabuki performance was, somewhat unironically, a lot like real life Jojo’s: there were a lot of random poses being struck, there was a lot of shouting, and a lot of actors menacingly approaching eachother. Asides from the last play (which was not a historical reenactment, but rather a historical slice of life) the actors spoke veeeeeeeeerryyyyyyyy sloooooooooooowwwwwww. There was almost always a shamisen (3-string banjo), drum, or tap-stick playing to accentuate the lines and actions of the actors, so they didn’t have to deliver everything flatly. Lastly, to reinforce the dynamicness of running and to symbolize the actor striking someone else (such as with a weapon), a single attendant on the side of the stage would slap wooden blocks into the stage to make a really loud clapping noise. This person also used the wood slap to mimic footsteps when actors would enter/leave via the runway going into the crowd- yet another unique feature of Japanese theater.
The first kabuki play was a tale of two brothers who, after being orphaned when their father was killed by one of his allies, spent the next eighteen years tracking down said ally so they could kill him. They were invited into the daimyo’s court by the court jester (sympathetic to their cause), and were about to introduce themselves when the daimyo immediately recognized them as the sons of the guy he had killed eighteen years ago. Deciding that the ruse was indeed up, the sons moved to kill him before the daimyo declared that they couldn’t kill him because “the ancient sacred sword of our people’s is still missing after hundreds of years”. This is very reasonable, of course, so the boys sheathe their swords and are about to sit down again when a runner comes in declaring that they’re found the legendary sacred sword. This ignites the fury of the younger brother once again, but before he can move to kill the daimyo for a second time, the daimyo declares that “I was put in charge of a hunt on mount Fuji for the Shogun in a few months, so you can’t kill me yet!”
This, too, was very reasonable. Taking some tickets to the great hunt as a consolation prize and vowing to meet the daimyo on that fated day, the brothers leave the palace and prepare to... fade to black, ‘cause that’s where the play ends with a little blurb on the text screen that says “they got revenge but died in the attempt.” No ending or anything.
The second play was one of the most popular kabuki productions of all time: Kanjinchou, aka “The Subscription Scroll”. It’s honestly the most well written of the bunch we saw, and tells the tale of an adventuring party consisting of the outcast prince Yoshitsune, the strongest monk in the land Benkei, and their three loyal samurai as they journey away from the lands where Yoshitsune is being hunted by his elder brother. To escape further to the north, they must first sneak through a gatehouse guarded by servants of the elder brother- and to do that, they have to disguise themselves as priests, with Benkei taking the lead and Yoshitsune donning the garb and straw hat of a packman. The gate is on the lookout for priests though, and what ensues is a battle of question and improvisation starting with the leader of the gate guards asking Benkei to read the list of people who are donating money to the stated goal of the monks. No such list exists of course, so Benkei draws out a blank scroll (all while concealing it from the gaze of the commander) and proceeds to improvise a long and grandiose speech using his monk upbringing- basically rolling a Nat 20. The commander knows the scroll is blank, but eventually becomes so enamored with Benkei’s improvisation and constant answers to his deeper and deeper philosophical questions that in the end he resigns himself to an early death and passes Yoshitsune’s party through without letting them know he knows- not before Benkei is forced to beat his own master though. When the party is through the gates, the most touching and emotional part of the play occurs in the form of a conversation between the weeping Benkei- an all-powerful warrior who can lift the mightiest weights yet still faltered when lifting a hand against his own master- and Yoshitsune, who forgives him with a kindness begetting the Buddha.
The last play was, quite simply, Firefighters vs. Sumo in a slow burning drama that eventually ends in a thirty man all-out brawl between the two forces. Well over an hour long, it was entirely worth for the amazing fight scenes at the end which struck the perfect balance of flow, comedy, and drama. Much more a contemporary play, people talked at a normal speed and interacted with much less formality- quite a relief after having to sit through the first two. Not much else needs to be said about it besides that opening sentence.
[The kabuki theater from the exterior. Very nice, one of the largest kabuki-only theaters in Japan.]
[Interior, high up on the third floor balcony.]
[I swear half of these scripts are real life Jojo’s.]
[A painting inside the theater, I thought it was pretty dope.]
[The kabuki theater also happened to be in the supercar district, I saw so many expensive ones rolling around the city.]
[Yes, that is indeed James Bowlingsan.]
[Today’s candid: Ian! He’s a pretty quiet dude but every time he talks it’s absolutely hilarious. His hair is nice, too. 100% a good roommate to have on our floor, I wouldn’t want it any other way- he adds a lot to our day-to-day group.]
==========
Literature review:
Today’s literature was on kabuki. Some fun facts about it:
-Women weren’t allowed to act in kabuki, so men acted as women. These men were so good at acting as women that they actually set fashion trends for women who traveled to see popular kabuki performances. Generally speaking, they were akin to modern day drag-queens? Only the male actors who played female characters tho.
-Kabuki actors were extremely wealthy celebrities that technically occupied the commoner class, making them socially lower than samurai but far more influential.
-Kabuki was originally a thing of the common folk and very unsuited for high courts. It was only over time and extended cultivation through a specific effort to enhance Japanese-specific culture to compete with Western plays and opera that it rose to being honorable enough for even the emperor to view. Nowadays, it’s analogous to Shakespearean plays... not so much when it first came out.
-Kabuki scripts often had to go to great lengths to mock the samurai while still maintaining social order, as it was originally an outlet for expressing dissatisfaction with and rebellion against the samurai class. These methods often included a protagonist who was secretly a high-ranking samurai but who dressed as a commoner for some unusual reason, allowing him (a commoner) to outwit and defeat the samurai without having an actual commoner doing it. I swear officer, he’s really a 500 year old demon samurai, not a commoner.

Foils: Antagonists In FOP
I hope you all enjoyed “This Is a Box” last Tuesday. I know I said I was going to do a worldbuilding post this week, but since “This Is a Box” is so long, I decided to do a post that wasn’t going to make you take in too much new information. Thus, this week we’re discussing character personalities and fanfic writing tips.
Specifically, our topic today is foils, and how I write seven FOP antagonists as distinct characters despite their shared interest in villainy.
WHAT IS A FOIL?
Foil: In literature, a foil is "a character who contrasts with another character to highlight particular qualities of the other character.”
Anti-Fairies are intended, literally, to be foils to their counterparts. Foop is nitpicky and proud, whereas Poof is laid-back and modest. Cosmo is clueless and doesn’t like taking responsibility, whereas Anti-Cosmo is intelligent and wants his name smeared across everything he does. Wanda takes charge with organized efficiency, whereas Anti-Wanda is reckless and deferent. And so on.
But foils don’t have to be Fairy and Anti-Fairy counterparts. Any two characters can be foils if you develop them that way. Cosmo and Wanda are foils for each other, with Wanda being the responsible motherly type and Cosmo being the childish playful type. Dinkleberg is a foil for Timmy’s Dad, as Dinkleberg is ridiculously considerate and generous, while Timmy’s Dad tends to be jealous, selfish, and judgmental.
WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT FOILS AS A WRITER?
Designing characters to be foils is a simple way to flesh them out and draw a reader into the story. Foils can complicate relationships in interesting ways between friends who hold some opposing views, or even between a hero and villain who hold some similar views.
Foils are typically used to balance a protagonist with their main antagonist. But how do we balance antagonists with other antagonists?
VICKY
The key to writing Vicky is remembering her motivation. This is where “Certifiable Super Sitter” fell short. Vicky’s motivation throughout the series has always been greed. She craves money. She’s in the babysitting gig to get paid, meaning that she would never want parents to stop hiring her. “Certifiable Super Sitter” was inconsistent with this motivation, because Vicky acted openly evil in front of Timmy’s Dad and had no concern that he would stop hiring her or tell her to go home.
In addition to earning money, Vicky also enjoys bossing the kids she babysits around. This too has a purpose. She forces them to do chores she brought from her own house, or other tasks that their parents had left her to do that night. Obviously, this too has a purpose. Vicky avoids doing dishes or cleaning toilets by blackmailing or threatening to hurt the children she babysits. The chore gets done with little to no effort on her part, and she still gets paid. Although blackmail can be effective, Vicky gets a thrill out of scaring children, and tends to rely on physical, cartoon-y violence whenever possible.
However, Vicky’s work isn’t done. She must also convince the parents that she is worth hiring again, and prevent the children from convincing their parents that she’s horrible. Blackmail is sometimes used, but often, Vicky will break or damage something and blame it on the kid she babysits. She plays the victim who tried and failed to stop this child, and who, weeping, blames herself in front of the parents. The parents trust her more, and their children less.
So, Vicky’s greatest weakness as a villain is that she is constantly maintaining a “secret identity” from parents in Dimmsdale. She must play the part of a sweet and caring babysitter in front of them, and also make them believe she’s sweet and caring even after she’s left and parents speak with their children. Vicky is different from most other antagonists in FOP because she can’t be openly cruel in front of most of the town.
Vicky has another piece to her character that the other antagonists don’t: Her hate/love relationship with the alien Mark. The two break-up and make-up throughout the series, with Vicky loving his human form but struggling to accept his alien one. Even after seeing his alien form in “King Chang”, she sent him chocolates for Valentine’s Day as seen in “Invasion of the Dads”, and took him back sometime before “Fairly Odd Pet”, before breaking up with him again that episode after “having a fight with him”.
So another trait of Vicky’s that sets her apart from the other antagonists is her age. Vicky is a teenage girl dealing with teenage girl problems when she isn’t busy babysitting. She struggles with her sometimes-boyfriend, she busily attends high school, and she occasionally tries to find other jobs (Such as interning at the hospital, or working at the Cake ‘N’ Bacon diner).
Additionally, Vicky has a little sister, Tootie, who is an excellent foil for Vicky- while Vicky hates Timmy, Tootie is in love with him. Whenever those two and Timmy are together, they instantly clash.
CROCKER
Vicky is a teenager constantly working to keep her “true identity” from adults in Dimmsdale. Denzel Crocker has no such concerns. From early on in the series, other characters label him crazy- including his ex-girlfriend and current boss, Geraldine Waxelplax.
This is a problem for Crocker! People don’t take him seriously, and laugh at him both behind his back and to his face. He despises the “crazy” label, but instead of trying to convince the town that he’s “gone straight” and no longer believes in fairies, Crocker throws his all into proving that fairies exist. Crocker is both full of wrath at the thought of being considered crazy, and full of greed in his desire to gain control of fairy magic. Of course, what he most wants to do with fairy magic isn’t to live a life of luxury, but to seek revenge on all those who ever wronged him in the slightest. Crocker finds it impossible to befriend anyone who openly believes he’s crazy.
In contrast with Vicky, Crocker delivers far more emotional pain to Timmy than physical pain. As Timmy’s fifth grade teacher, Crocker controls a huge chunk of power over Timmy, from his grades to his social life. Crocker’s end goal, of course, is to prove to the world that Timmy has fairies. He does so by publicly humiliating Timmy whenever he can, trying to coax him to use magic to defend himself or poof away, after which Crocker intends to capture Timmy’s fairies and prove to everyone that fairies are real.
Crocker is the complete opposite of Vicky in that regard. While Vicky wants to keep part of her life secret and always wants to get Timmy alone so she can torment him, Crocker always wants to keep Timmy in public so that if Timmy does call on his fairies for aid, he’ll risk exposing them to the world.
Besides being thought of as crazy, another aspect of Crocker’s character sets him apart from the other antagonists. Despite his old age, he is unmarried and still lives with his mother. The two constantly clash because his mother is desperate for him to marry and move out, and Crocker dislikes being babied and bossed around. However, Crocker’s dating pool is limited, as the town believes he’s crazy. Even if his craziness doesn’t stand in the way, his age and looks make dating a struggle.
Some of the other villains in FOP don’t intend to target Timmy specifically. However, Crocker has a perfectly legitimate reason for doing so: Timmy Turner is in his class. Timmy does harass Crocker on occasion too, by publicly embarrassing him (Such as by switching the video Cosmo took of Cosmo and Wanda and tried to upload online with a video of Crocker wearing a dress in “Information Stupor Highway”). Crocker, despising it when people think he’s crazy, suspects Timmy’s hand in many of the bad things that happen to him, and the cycle continues.
Crocker is different from some of the other antagonists in the show because, mostly, he doesn’t really want Timmy dead. Occasionally his wrath will get the better of him and he’ll want to strike out at everyone who’s ever laughed at him, but both Crocker and Timmy would prefer to publicly humiliate each other instead of physically hurting each other whenever possible.
NORM
Norm is one of those characters who isn’t here to make friends. With anyone. Ever. In basically his whole life. The only time he’s interested in winning someone over is if he approaches them to flirt. If you don’t match the qualification of “pretty genie lady”, the odds for winning Norm’s cooperation without a side order of sarcastic remarks are not in your favor.
Norm is an extremely forthcoming person. That alone sets him apart from all the other antagonists on this list besides Crocker and Anti-Cosmo. Perhaps being bottled up for the majority of his life has left the genie with a craving for conversation. Norm has a tendency to blurt things out even when his conversation partner doesn’t have the context about why he’s so angry about a certain person or event. He’ll happily explain himself to anyone who takes the time to talk with him, frequently revealing his plans in the process. I suppose when you’re a genie with oodles of cosmic power at your fingertips, you can get away with saying whatever you want.
And it’s a good thing that Norm does have power at his back, because his big mouth would get him into a lot of trouble otherwise. Norm’s cockiness is always his downfall. Being a powerful genie, Norm typically expects things to work out for him. If he thinks the two of you are on the same side working towards the same goal, such as seeking revenge on Timmy Turner, then he’ll contribute everything to the table that he possibly can: Including revealing that a genie’s master actually can wish for more than three wishes.
While Norm may be proud and snarky, he actually does have some inkling of respect for authority. Not only did he jump through all the hoops to participate in Fairy Idol for the chance to become a fairy godparent, but he even put up with Jorgen stapling wings to his back and didn’t try to seek revenge on him for doing so. Norm likes to needle people out of curiosity to see if he can make them snap, but he doesn’t like direct confrontation.
Another sign of Norm’s cockiness is how touchy-taunty he tends to get. Put him in a room with another person, and he’ll inevitably poke them in the nose, rub his hand in their hair, or otherwise push and pull them around. However, he doesn’t appreciate being touched (or hugged) much in return. His displeasure is clear by the irritated faces he makes, but he doesn’t shove people off or snap at them. He’ll taunt and tease, yes, but again, direct confrontation isn’t his thing. This reluctant acceptance to let himself be touched and pushed around against his will is a surprising trait for a villain, and a very interesting one to explore.
Norm’s main goal in life, obviously, is to gain freedom from his lamp- a goal which he can’t achieve unless he is wished from his lamp by his master, or manages to exploit one of a few loopholes like the kind we saw in the show. Norm has no interest in taking over the world, blowing up the planet, or even in getting rich. The thing is, Norm isn’t outside his lamp nearly as often as he’d like to be. Once he gained freedom in “Fairy Idol”, he was delighted to explore the world, attend baseball games, and be waited on hand and foot. Things that involve other people, but with little effort and conversation on his end (Besides, of course, having dinner with someone who caught his eye).
Despite his utter lack of subtlety and his tendency to reveal what he’s thinking to everyone around, Norm is a very practical person overall. He’s used to time ticking out on him. He likes things to get done. He’ll go along with anything you want as long as he thinks it’s going somewhere, but he hates feeling used or ignored. One other thing that sets Norm apart from many of the other FOP villains is his reluctance to talk about his feelings. He’ll blab his evil plans, perhaps, and call you snappy nicknames every second of the day, but when it comes to actual emotions, he tends to keep his mouth shut or explain things through the use of logic instead.
REMY
Remy is an excellent foil for Timmy from the get-go. While both crave the attention of their parents, Timmy interacts with his much more frequently. Remy is barely allowed two minutes to speak directly with his parents. The original script for “Fairy Fairy Quite Contrary” even shows a deleted scene where he pleaded for them to stay and talk with him longer, and his mom softened and decided that they could deduct the extra time from tomorrow’s daily two minutes. Naturally, Remy envies Timmy for having two parents AND two godparents who all care about him.
Unlike Timmy, however, Remy is shown to be a very obedient child. Timmy often finds his parents dumb, or their rules strict, and uses Cosmo and Wanda to leave the house or gain access to anything his parents don’t want him to have. Timmy always tries to protest when he thinks his parents are being unfair, especially where Vicky and Crocker are concerned.
But Remy isn’t brave enough to stand up to his parents. In his desperation to win their affection, he is wholly compliant. He’ll do anything they say - stay out of their way, stay quiet, attend military school - and is even delighted to be called by the wrong name (Liam) due to the fact that he received a pat on the head from his father in the process. I think the fact that the scene of him whining to his parents was cut from the final episode emphasizes this aspect of his character completely.
One thing is for sure: Remy would never use magic to hurt or even slightly inconvenience his parents. He just can’t bring himself to do it, or perhaps feels that he can’t change their minds no matter how hard he tries with magic, and that the only way to win their love is to do exactly what they say and hope it will all pay off in the future. The thing about Remy is, he tends to rely on others to rescue him rather than fighting to help himself. Instead of trying to pull himself from his downward spiral and fight for his needs, Remy would rather lash out at those who have what he doesn’t.
I haven’t written Remy much yet, but whenever I do, I try to emphasize the passive qualities of his character. Another example from the original script of “Fairy Fairy Quite Contrary” that was cut from the final version is the scene during the magical duel where Remy pulls out his phone to call for advice on which amazing creature he should turn into. In the script, his phone couldn’t get signal in Fairy World. Instead of trying to come up with something on his own, Remy stood there helplessly, panicking, placing all his faith in Juandissimo’s ability to save the day (Juandissimo, of course, turned Remy into a tortoise).
Overall, Remy is a lonely, quiet child who tends to let things happen to him. He uses Juandissimo’s magic to escape reality and venture into comic books, and generally stays out of his parents’ ways. Unlike Timmy, Remy tends to think through the consequences of his actions, and tries to find more reasonable, easier, less risky ways to get what he wants (For example, he first tried to pay Timmy to wish Cosmo and Wanda away, instead of immediately calling magical duel in “Fairy Fairy Quite Contrary”.)
Remy has control over very few things in his life- Juandissimo and money being the most obvious two. When Timmy and Remy first met, Remy was determined to rent the entire movie theater out for himself- no matter how much pressure the other kids put him under. Remy may not be able to stand up to his parents, but when backed with Juandissimo and money, he is determined to get what he wants from people he doesn’t believe have the power to stop him.
ANTI-COSMO
Anti-Cosmo’s biggest foils are, of course, Jorgen and H.P., as they all hold prominent positions as leaders in the magical world, and even Jorgen has aggressive, threatening, not-wholly-good traits. Anti-Wanda acts as a foil for Anti-Cosmo too, since her reckless carelessness tends to interfere with many of his plans.
H.P. and Anti-Cosmo, though, are both villains who lead their respective races. Since I am currently writing a backstory ‘fic for each of them (Origin of the Pixies and Frayed Knots), and the two frequently overlap, it’s very important to me to make them distinct from one another. To do this, I always strive to emphasize certain opposing key aspects in their personalities- Logic vs. Creativity being the most obvious.
H.P. is a highly-controlling neat-freak. When I write him, I try to emphasize his OCD tendencies, such as his need to rewrite notes on a new paper instead of crossing things out, or rearranging flowers by color in the grocery store.
So to contrast H.P., I went against the idea of Anti-Cosmo that I usually see portrayed in fanfiction- Instead of making Anti-Cosmo neat and tidy, I made his work areas messy. To top it off, I gave him scruffy hair that he can’t seem to style no matter how much he tries. He constantly flits from one idea to another, coming up with ideas and throwing them into action with the blind confidence that they’ll work, instead of taking the time to carefully plot things out. He prefers to improvise, rather than proceeding in an orderly fashion like H.P.
This also works, because messiness is a trait my Anti-Cosmo and Anti-Wanda share, so her habit of being cluttered doesn’t frustrate him as much as it could. Instead of being a point that drives them apart, it’s an area where they understand each other.
Another way I try to emphasize Anti-Cosmo’s creativity is by making him a lover of the arts. When I walk him past statues, paintings, or through gardens in my writing, I let him pause and admire whatever it is he’s looking at. I also gave him the ability to draw, which happens to contrast with Cosmo’s ability to build. In my short story “Yellow Flower Number 9”, Anti-Cosmo happily supported anti-fairy children at the craft fair, even though the quality of what they were selling was subpar. Most antagonists, especially H.P., would never do that.
Of course, Anti-Cosmo is also based on the British aristocrat stereotype. He’s polite, proper, loves his tea, and probably loves to read. When he speaks, his sentences are very long and boastful- not to mention, full of pompous vocabulary. Anti-Cosmo tends to act smugly and expects to be respected, even if he’s dangling from the Big Wand in Fairy World by his underwear. However, despite his expectation of being respected, Anti-Cosmo tends to make terrible decisions- such as trying to steal brownies from the von Strangle bakery in plain sight, rather than sneaking in to steal them later. Or buying them.
HEAD PIXIE
The other major trait pair between H.P. and Anti-Cosmo that I try to emphasize in my works is Justice vs. Mercy. H.P. makes his rules clear to his pixies and punishes anyone who breaks them. He believes that hard work should be rewarded, and will promote or demote the workers of Pixies Inc. regardless of whether doing so will cause their coworkers to resent them. Anti-Cosmo, however, is willing to forgive, teach, and nudge in the right direction without delivering much more than a scolding or light slap on the wrist. Anti-Cosmo is far more willing to trust those he doesn’t like and forgive those who have wronged him in the past than grudge-holding H.P. is.
H.P. is a curious character whose personality in-show seems to contradict everything you would expect of him. Despite his age, wealth, and business attire, the Head Pixie is a very casual man who tosses phrases like “Later, dude”, “Blah blah blah”, and “Go me, go me, it’s my birthday” into conversation. One deleted scene from “Oddlympics” even shows him fist-bumping. His sentences are short, a bit choppy, and frequently begin with conjunctions. Obviously, his speech pattern alone sets him apart from Anti-Cosmo.
The key to writing H.P. is confidence. And lots of it. Every time H.P. is on screen, you’ll know it. He always wants everyone’s attention on him, and tries to take charge in all situations. When he is expected to defer to someone, such as Anti-Cosmo while in Anti-Cosmo’s own home, he can’t seem to resist the urge to undermine whoever holds power over him- even if that person is his own ally. For example, when Anti-Cosmo wanted to name the baby they’d kidnapped Fauntleroy, H.P. made a point of arguing with him in front of Timmy and the gang, whereas a more tactful character (such as Anti-Cosmo) might have waited until they were away from witnesses before expressing distaste.
H.P. is a proud soul with very little shame. He acts as though he can get away with doing whatever he wants and make people look bad if he feels like it, and expects to not face serious consequences for doing so. Cocky H.P. believes he deserves respect and that he should always be in charge. Nothing drives him crazier than losing control of a situation. If he isn’t in control, he’ll gain it in whatever way he can- typically by sassing whomever holds power over him.
Another interesting aspect to H.P.’s character is, of course, that he is a businessman. And not only is he a businessman, but the pixies represent the neutral gray between the Fairy and Anti-Fairy races. H.P. is a character who holds no qualms about playing on both sides of the street. If it benefits him most to do things the legal, lawful way, then he will jump through all the hoops and fill out all the paperwork to do so. But if it benefits him to play the role of a villain and simply take what he wants (such as a fairy baby), then he’ll go about things in a more underhanded way.
H.P. has a very logical way of looking at the world, and isn’t usually conflicted when faced with multiple options. Vicky won’t torment a child in front of a parent. Crocker may hesitate to act if he feels he’ll be publicly humiliated. Remy is reluctant to stand up to adults he can’t win over with money. Anti-Cosmo’s temper flares when he feels he’s been insulted. Foop, when trying to be underhanded, might let something slip but will stammer and correct himself to hide his true goals. H.P., however, tends to be straightforward, blunt, and doesn’t try to disguise what he wants. You generally know what H.P. wants from you, and if you don’t yet, he’ll let you know very soon.
FOOP
Foop seems to take much more after Anti-Cosmo than he takes after Anti-Wanda, so when my writing gives me the chance to bring both Anti-Cosmo and Foop into the same scene, I try to emphasize the differences between them. Again, I try to play off Anti-Cosmo’s creativity and charity by playing up Foop’s logical outlook on life, along with his childish perceptions and his selfishness. If bringing Anti-Cosmo into a scene isn’t an option, then Foop ranting about ways his father annoys him can also do the trick.
The show doesn’t make the differences between Foop and Anti-Cosmo very obvious, but if you study them closely, you can get a feel for the ways they differ. “Fairly Odd Baby” makes it clear that Anti-Cosmo is much more interested in flaunting how smart he is than he’s interested in actually getting away with what he was trying to do.
For example, in “Fairly Odd Baby” alone, Anti-Cosmo took the time to reveal that he and H.P. were actually the ones disguised as Jorgen, taunted those who came to rescue Poof while they were caged, and explained his evil plan to H.P.- all instead of just going ahead with his plan. Foop is way more goal-oriented. Rather than monologue and threaten, he’d rather blast you and be done with it. If he’s in disguise, don’t expect him to reveal himself.
I do believe Foop’s strengths lie in being a planner. In “Playdate of Doom”, he went to great lengths to urge Jorgen to bring a block of ice to his jail cell. Foop used this ice to both cover his escape hole and make it look like he was still in his cell, despite the fact that he could have escaped earlier at any time. You can bet that Anti-Cosmo wouldn’t bother to hide his escape hole, and would instead leave it there to make his disappearance obvious as soon as possible. In his debut episode, “Anti-Poof”, Foop even appears distressed when Poof flew away without playing in the Sandbox of Sorrow he’d designed. It had a Shovel of Sadness and a Pail of Pain and everything!
It’s reasonable to conclude, then, that Foop values success more than brains. This is in line with the annoyance he seems to feel towards his father, as he doesn’t believe Anti-Cosmo could truly be smart if he doesn’t accomplish the things he sets out to do. Oddly, Anti-Cosmo and Foop are the only antagonists for whom jail time seems to be a serious consequence for their actions. In writing Foop, I try to emphasize this. His biggest concern isn’t that people will think he’s crazy. His biggest concern is being caught and punished.
One of Foop’s characteristics that affects what he does is, again, his age. Foop may be an evil genius in his own right, but he’s still a small child. He likes stuffed animals and wants to make friends at school. He’s scared of Vicky and sees Crocker as a weird old man who happens to share a few interests with him. Foop may see himself as a lone wolf who can take care of himself, but you can always expect him to get distracted with sweets or have his feelings hurt if someone criticizes something he’s worked hard on.
I’ve written Foop not only as a child in my works, but occasionally as a very young teenager. I see Foop growing up with an interest in science, to contrast Poof’s interest in sports. Even as he grows, I try to portray him as a smart but rebellious boy who is constantly torn between trying to impress his father, and trying to annoy him. He craves approval and awards, but constantly struggles against his desire to lash out when someone sets him off. Even as an adult, I think, Foop will always have a stubborn streak of childishness in his heart.
TO THE TEST
Here are seven snippets I wrote just now, with each of the characters above facing off with Timmy. Using what you know about the different characters, their motivations, and how they differ, can you tell who said each one?
“What? Still got a wad of industrial-strength floss stuffed in your ear or something? It’s a perfectly dreary day, and you’re sitting around in here? Come on, get out, smell the thunderstorm, huh?”
“Are you still here? Oh, please. What do you want? You have your reward. Our agreement has terminated. Yes, so you distracted the ruffians long enough to prevent them from getting away- So what? I’m the one who called the police to come and arrest them! And look which one of us isn’t sporting bruises in every color of the rainbow. Yes, very well done, you!”
“I hope you’re kidding. You know, I really don’t see how I could have made myself any clearer. Then again, I never bothered learning how to speak Simpleton. This plan was foolproof. I even wrote it out for you. You were supposed to unleash the giant spiders when I said ‘Two’. Two! Which I swear must also be the level of your intelligence on a scale from 1 to 10!”
“Ha! I’d like to see you try and take it, punk. And if one word gets out, I’ll grind you into mulch so foul, not even the worms will dig you up again.”
“What will it be, Turner? Escape now and reveal your secret to the world, or stand there and watch the girl of your dreams email that humiliating photo to everyone you’ve ever known?”
“Ah-buh-buh! I wouldn’t lay a single fingernail on that button if I were you. After all, you wouldn’t like it if I happened to accidentally tip that platform you’re standing on straight into the lava below, now would you? No, I didn’t really expect you would.”
“It really is that easy. Take back your bug, walk out that door, and we won’t have a problem. Or don’t. Then we might. That’s your choice.”

WHY IT'S SAFE FOR MAKING NEW VENTURE ANIMAL
It's exciting that there even exist parts of the world than what I saw immediately around me. The Mythical Man-Month, adding people to a project tends to slow it down. More often it was just an arbitrary series of hoops to jump through, words without content designed mainly for testability. It's like the court of Louis XIV. Modern literature is important, but the job listings have to be really useful. But you could in principle have a useful conversation about them with some people. Technological progress means making things do more of what we want. It would be less now, probably less than the cost of sending them the first month's bill. But that same illiquidity also encouraged you not to seek it.1 You don't do that if you start scanning people with no symptoms, you'll get this on a giant scale: a huge number of software patents there's not a lot of users.
It's what bias means. By definition they're partisan. I worked at Yahoo during 1998 and 1999.2 If I remember correctly, our frontpage used to just fit in the size window people typically used then. Now the frightening giant is Microsoft, and they could not master it. Want to know if you bet on Web-based software, you can probably get even more effect by paying closer attention to the time you have.3 Enough of an effect to triple the value of what they create. There are really two variants of that question, and the bureaucratic obstacles all medical startups face, and the classics. When I was 13 I realized, is that my m. He probably considers them about equivalent in power to, say, the ages of eleven and seventeen.4
And yet, mysteriously, Viaweb ended up crushing all its competitors. The war was due mostly to external forces, and the most efficient way to do it. So for any given team of founders, would it not pay to wait till his arteries were over 90% blocked and 3 days later he had a quadruple bypass.5 At the end of the year I couldn't even remember what else I had stored in that attic. Obvious comparisons suggest themselves, both to the process and the resulting product. Basically, Apple bumped IBM and then Microsoft stole its wallet. What happens now with the Super Bowl used to happen every night. That is, are the riskiest startups the ones that wanted Oracle experience. That doing good work.6 It let them build great looking online stores literally in minutes.7 Web-based application.8
They're a lot of bandwidth.9 What that level of ability can get you is, say, Python? Or rather, any client, and if you have genuine intellectual curiosity, that's what you'll naturally tend to do if you just follow your own inclinations.10 As a result it became massively successful. By granting such an over-broad patents, but they are an order of magnitude less important than solving the real problem, my friend Robert Morris and I started a startup to do this is to collect them together in one place for a certain number of hours each day.11 Everyone was so cheerful and healthy and rich. What was really happening was de-oligopolization. When would you ever want to do. I found I could entertain myself by having ideas instead of reading other people's.12 Microsoft client and server software. One forgets it's owned by a private company. You can mitigate this with subsidies at the bottom nine tenths of university CS departments.13
And while I miss the 3 year old ever had. You might think that people decide to buy something, and if you want to be their research assistants because they're genuinely interested in the topic. A company that sues competitors for patent infringement till you have money, and making money consists mostly of errands.14 This was too subtle for me. People from the desktop software business will find this hard to credit, but at the time. But if you look at the source, because you control the whole system, right down to the hardware. For the first week or so we intended to make this point diplomatically, but in some cases it's possible to get rich will do whatever they like with you: install puppet governments, siphon off your best workers, use your women as prostitutes, dump their toxic waste on your territory—all the things we describe as addictive are. I got was $12. If you do manage to threaten them, they're more right than they know, because the adults were the visible experts in the skills they were trying to learn in great detail about the mechanics of startups, but as Microsoft shows, revenue is a lagging indicator in the technology business.15
At least $1000 a month. The best ideas are just on the right side of impossible. Programs that write programs.16 You can figure out the tricks for winning at this new game. That is very hard to answer in the general case. This will take some effort on the part of the game.17 And yet the authorities still for the most part act as if drugs were themselves the cause of the problem.18 Perhaps a better solution is to let as few things into your identity as possible. You can probably take it as a computer system executing that algorithm. The effects of World War II were both economic and social history, and the advantage will grow as fast as I can type, then spend several weeks rewriting it.19 Finally, the truly serious hacker should consider learning Lisp: Lisp is worth learning for the profound enlightenment experience you will have when you finally get it; that experience will make you a better programmer for the rest of us can use. I wanted to buy them, however limited.
Notes
But although I started using it, and the older you get to profitability on a weekend and sit alone and think.
It's unpleasant because the arrival of desktop publishing, given people the shareholders instead of themselves. And those examples do reflect after-tax return from a 6/03 Nielsen study quoted on Google's site. I talked to a VC is interested in investing but doesn't want to write your thoughts down in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, Oxford University Press, 1996.
Does anyone really think we're so useless that in the world of the company.
73 billion.
Apparently there's only one founder is being compensated for risks he took earlier. The shift in power from investors to founders is how much they can be explained by math. MSFT, having spent much of observed behavior.
I ordered a large company? As well as down.
But his world record only lasted 46 days.

When the Air Hits Your Brain, neurosurgeon Frank Vertosick recounts a conversation—maybe around 10 people.
I call it procrastination when someone works hard and not fundraising is because their company made money from them. Learning this explained a lot of detail. If this is the kind that has little relation to other investors, even thinking requires control of scarce resources, political deal-making power. It tipped from being this boulder we had high hopes for doesn't do well, but that's a pyramid scheme.
Financing a startup. The dialog on Beavis and Butthead was composed largely of these titles vary too much. Copyright owners tend to say, of course it was 94% 33 of 35 companies that an eminent designer is any better than enterprise software—and to run on the server.
Though they were that smart they'd already be working on such an interview with Steve Wozniak in Jessica Livingston's Founders at Work. A single point of treason.
There's a good chance that a startup you can do it in B. That's why there's a continuum here. The other cause is usually slow growth or excessive spending rather than ones they capture.
By Paleolithic standards, technology evolved at a time machine. There are still expensive to start a startup to become addictive. Instead of bubbling up from the other seed firms always find is that most three letter words are bad news; it would not change the world barely affects me. Then when we got to see if you do.
But not all are. They're common to all cultures with long traditions of living in cities. I think it's mainly not having the universities in the former, and large bribes by the normal people they're usually surrounded with.
They're still deciding, which parents would still send their kids won't listen to them about your fundraising prospects. The Socialist People's Democratic Republic of X is probably not do that.
And the reason.
As I was once trying to sell hardware without trying to capture the service revenue as well, but economically that's how we gauge their progress, but rather that if a company just to go to college, they have to decide between two alternatives, we'd ask, what if they pay so well is that it killed the best hackers want to design these, because people would treat you like a compiler, you could only get in the narrow technical sense of being harsh to founders would actually increase the spammers' cost to reach a given audience by a sense of the word intelligence is the least correlation between launch magnitude and success. Good and bad luck.
Heirs will be interesting to 10,000 sestertii, for many Americans the decisive change in how Stripe felt. I talked to a woman who had recently arrived from Russia. Many will consent to b rather than ones they capture. Good investors don't lead startups on; their reputations are too valuable.

All Dressed Up
Chapter One
Chapter Sixteen
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters from The Riot Club/Posh, and all OCs were beautifully crafted by @club-riot
"Tamsin?" Dimitri turned to her. They were just after finishing the main course and were waiting patiently for pudding, "What have you been doing all night? "How do you mean?" Tamsin was still leaning her chin against her propped up hands, gazing at him innocently. "This is what I mean," He gestured to her entire being, "Why are you acting like a crazy person?" "No, I'm not," She shook her head. It was exceedingly unconvincing and she knew it. "I'm not-" Dimitri stopped himself, and sighed, "What do you want, Tamsin?" "What?" She straighten her back, sitting upright again. "Is it money?" "No," "Then what?" Tamsin didn't reply straight away. She paused. Then picked up her glass of red wine and knocked it back. Then she placed the empty glass back on the table and reached over the corner of the table to get ahold of both sides of Dimitri's face and kissed him, full on the lips. They didn't break away or stop or anything. It just went on and on and on. "Oh wow, gosh," Elizabeth looked at the table, avoiding eye contact with anyone and blushing ferociously. "You're married, Lizzy," George laughed, "Surely, you and Leighton are used to this sort of thing," "Only every Tuesday," Elizabeth couldn't help but smirk a little at her own comment. "What do you have on Tuesdays?" James looked at her. "Well, I-" "She has two English lectures from ten until twelve, followed by a tutorial in modern English literature at three and then drama rehearsals from half six to half eight," Guy said. He said it as if he were the most clever person on earth. He said it as if he had just cured Cancer. "I'm impressed," George's eyes went wider than usual, surprise evident on his face. "I'm not," Elizabeth frowned looking at Guy, "How did you know that?" "..You're looking lovely tonight," He replied solemnly, his clever imagine of two seconds beforehand had been shattered. He was now reduced to a creepy stalker. "Guy," She didn't look impressed. Not scary. Just not impressed. And Guy had to mentally slap himself because there was a point where all he could think of was how cute she looked. "Umm..," He began to shrug. Over her shoulder, he could see James looking like he was about to burst with the containment of his laughter. Guy had really dug a hole for himself. "It was me," Poppy waved her arms slightly, getting Elizabeth's attention, "He asked where you were once and I just gave him a copy of your timetable," "What?" "I didn't think you'd mind," Poppy scoffed, both her and Alistair laughing at the situation. "Do you.. mind?" Guy looked at her so awkwardly. So awkwardly. Like a child in trouble. "I mean," She raised her hand to her burning face, "Next time don't make it sound like you follow me around," "He does," Dimitri briefly broke away from Tamsin. "I do not," The look of panic was hysterically evident in Guy's face. "God, I hope not," Elizabeth chuckled, reaching for her glass of gin and lemonade, "You'd be so bored if you did," "Don't put yourself down," George said sadly from in front of her. "Yes. I'm sure loads of people would love to stalk you," Alistair said in a very calm voice. Poppy burst out laughing. Elizabeth wasn't sure how to react. "That is not what I meant," George tapped the edge of the table with his index finger as he spoke. "It's fine," Elizabeth shook her head, wishing that would be the end of the conversation. "Dimitri dear, stop that please," Elena touched her nephew's shoulder as she entered the room again, "Or at least go upstairs," "Mum!" Honora's one word argument told her mother to stop talking. No one needed a translator for that. Not that Elena cared. "Now pudding will be out shortly. Is anyone still thirsty?" "Wine please, madam," Ed actually fell off his chair once he had finished speaking. "Are you sure?" Elena grinned at the state he was in. "It's collective wine, Mrs. Honora's mum," Toby added, "He's asking for all of us," "Very well, I'll have someone bring in two or three bottles," Elena went to leave. "Did you finally realize you've got employees?" Honora snorted. "Honora, do you want to be sent to your room without pudding?" Elena turned back around again, "I can do that. You live here, you know?" Then she left the room again, leaving the group to tease Honora about being sent to bed early at twenty years of age. "Lauren would love all this," Miles said to no one in particular as he looked around the room. After drinking quite a lot already, Poppy was fed up with listening to him rambling on about Lauren. She began to face away from him, speaking to Alistair instead and letting Hugo deal with all the Lauren talk. "He's not worth the effort, Poppy," Alistair said to her, almost coldly, "He's blinded by the commoner," "It's just annoying, Alistair," Poppy pouted, looking like she was about to cry but she wasn't, "I got all dressed up and he doesn't even care," "You do look nice though," He nodded in reference to her navy swing dress. It was different in comparison to what she usually wore to fancy dos. She generally picked brighter colours as well. The darker blue was charming to see on her. And Alistair noticed. She smiled and reached up to hold his hand lightly. She appreciated that he said it, even if he didn't mean it. Alistair was never the type to give out compliments. But he did mean it. "Ooh! Pudding!" James' face lit up when the staff put a selection of cakes, tarts and merengues. "I love chocolate cake!" Elizabeth squealed, "It's literally my will to live," "Would you like to try some cheesecake?" Guy held up his fork of Bailey's cheesecake. "Mmm hmm," She nodded, about to take the fork off him but he instinctively shoved it into her mouth, feeding her, "Mm, it's delicious!" James, George and Hugo exchanged glances, smirking, feeling it wouldn't be long till the Leighton-Masters/Shaw marriage would be forgotten about.

GSvsAA - Dual Destinies - Character Profiles
In line with the AJ one, here’s the next in the line up. Check the master post more more of the GSvsAA translation project.
It’s worth noting that while Mr. Takumi is known to have some very obvious or random inspirations for his name puns, there are times when it’s tricky to figure out because of his choice of punny origins. Meanwhile, Mr. Yamazaki & co. tend to follow suit with the obvious, but their puns are often very straightforward and easy to deduce. Sometimes, a name has multiple layers of puns and chances are good that plenty of those puns make their way into the character’s design.
I don’t think it’s lazy design, since simplifying a character’s role in a plot means more care can be taken for the actual mystery, but sometimes it leaves something about the character to be desired. Then again, there are plenty of characters from the first four games in the series that aren’t so memorable.
I’m just obsessed with this series so I know them all. Ha.
Edit: SoJ profiles posted.
Spoilers below.
Main cast
Athena Cykes - Kidzuki Kokone (希月 心音) kidzuki means “awareness” (kinda following how Trucy is named Minuki) and the second kanji in her surname is “moon”. The kanji in her given name, when pronounced shin’on, means “heartbeat”. It can also be translated literally as “heart sound” to refer to her ability to hear people’s voices of their hearts.
Simon Blackquill - Yuugami Jin (夕神 迅) yugami means “distortion” or “twist”, referring to his epithet, “The Twisted Samurai”. The kanji form a phrase meaning “god of dusk”. jin, written as 刃, is “blade”; while the kanji in his name means “swift”. It’s analogous to Edgeworth’s name, Mitsurugi, which is the name of a noble blade of legend. Trivia: He refers to the chief in person using the term danna, a title reserved for Lords and noblemen back during the days of samurai. Since this couldn’t be replicated in English without sounding drastically out of place, it’s been tamed down to a plain “sir”. (Imo, he could very well have gone with “sire” and it’d be just the right amount of tradition and respect, but I guess it doesn’t quite sound Japanese enough.) Incidentally, Taka is Gin, which can mean “silver”, or possibly like the English word (but it’s pronounced with a hard G).
Bobby Fulbright - Ban Gouzou (番 轟三) The ban in his name may refer to a “guard”, though being written as 万 means “many”. Combined with his first name, which consists of “booming” and “three” (like in “two’s company, three’s a crowd”), you get a whole lot of bombastic in one guy. Trivia: His catchphrase is shouting “JUSTICE!!!” in English at the top of his lungs and laughing triumphantly. Imo, the localization's “In Justice We Trust!” has a certain nuance to it that really makes it pop when you realize just who he is, though.
Yep, that’s it. That’s the game. These three right here.
Episode 1
Gaspen Payne - Auchi Fumitake (亜内 文武) “Auchi” is simply “ouch”. His first name is the same as his brother’s but flipped. fumi (文) is “literature”; take (武) is “martial”. I suppose both of them are warriors of words, but I really think their parents the devs just ran out of ideas.
Juniper Woods - Morizumi Shinobu (森澄 しのぶ) mori (森) is “forest” or “woods”; shinobu means “to hide”. Meanwhile, the kanji for zumi (澄) used in the verb sumasu becomes “to look prim” or “to listen carefully”. These two definitions better relate to her from Episode 3, though. Trivia: In the Japanese version of this episode, the crime scene shows in English letters: “S I N O B U”. Since Japanese is typed using romaji, し can be either shi or si. Either way, it’s still pronounced the same. If it weren’t obvious enough from the intro, this spelling would have easily given away the real killer.
Ted Tonate - Barashima Shingo (馬等島 晋吾) barasu can mean a few things: “to expose”, “to take apart”, or “to kill”. He already covers the latter two in the first case, but the first definition doesn’t quite play in until the last one. The last syllable of his first name ties into his first name to make mashingo, or “machine language”; hence the keyboard.
Candice Arme - Kaku Hozumi (賀来 ほずみ) Her full name can be written as 確保済み, meaning “in custody”. kaku may refer to “square”/”cube”; probably referring to how she’s been hit. Her surname and the first syllable of her first name make kakuho, or “guarantee”, which seems to play into her English name.
Edit: Well, I totally screwed up this entry. My bad.
Episode 2
Jinxie Tenma - Tenma Yumemi (天馬 ゆめみ) Her surname as written here refers to the “heavenly horse” Pegasus. yumemiru means “to dream”. More on Tenma below.
Damian Tenma - Tenma Deemon (天馬 出右衛門) His first name comes from “demon”. Tenma, which is also the name of the village, is written as 天魔. It refers to the yokai of the Buddhist sixth heaven in the realm of desire who haunts people and deceives them into avoiding good. According to legend, Tenma tried (and ultimately failed) to lure the young Siddhartha away from enlightenment with earthly desires. Tenma Taro from this game is based on this Tenma. In Japanese folklore, he's described to have a bird-like appearance, hence we have jangly-cackling-bird-demon.
The Great Nine-Tails - Great Kyuubi (グレート 九尾) He’s based on the Nine-tailed fox of Japanese legend, a yokai of immense power and influence and sometimes disastrous consequences. You know the one.
Rex Kyubi - Kyuubi Ginji (九尾 銀次) His last name is the same as the Nine-Tails. The gin (銀) in his name refers to his silver hair and to the Nine-tailed fox of legend, which is often portrayed as silver. ginjiru also means “to chant” or “to recite”.
Phineas Filch - Zeniarai Kumabee (銭洗 熊兵衛) zeni, as written above, is “money”. (This is what Capcom’s fictional currency zenny is based on.) His last name is a reference to the azukiarai, “The Bean Washer”, a yokai who resembles a small boy that keeps people up at night with the sound of washing beans. Filch here claims that he’s the grandson of an infamous thief who once kept people up by the sounds of his money-washing. His first name is made of bears: kuma (熊) and “bear”; yet he’s frequently called a tanuki instead, especially for his swindling ways.
Edit: Got that the other way around.
Florent L’Belle - Biyouin Shuuichi (美葉院 秀一) biyouin is “beauty parlor” and shuuichinichi is “once a week”. The kanji in his first name come to “excellence” and “[number] one”.
Episode 3
Aristotle Means - Ichiro Shinji (一路 真二) The kanji in his name together mean “one road, two truths”. ichiro, with the same kanji, means “straight” or “directly”, and shinjiru means “to believe”.
Constance Courte - Michiba Masayo (道葉 正世) michibata is “roadside” and masa (正) is “right” or “just”, to parallel Means’ name above.
Hugh O’Conner - Shizuya Rei (静矢 零) His name is most likely picked for the convenience of the recording that’s played during trial. In Japanese, the muffled recording sounds like it’s saying “Koroshite yare!”, which is Japanese for “I’ll kill you!” Thanks to Athena’s efforts, she reveals it’s actually supposed to say “Kora! Shizuya Rei!”, or a scolding “Hey! Shizuya Rei!” The kanji of his last name are “quiet” and “arrow”. His first name can also mean “zero”.
Edit: This one I made a mistake due to mistaken memory. It’s actually kinda hard to make out the te sound in the recording, so I assumed it was excluded.
Robin Newman - Atsui Chishio (厚井 知潮) atsui is “hot”; it can also mean “hot-tempered” or “passionate”. chishio is “blood circulation”, usually referring to hot-headedness. It also doubles over as a gender-ambiguous name.
Myriam Scuttlebutt - Uwasa Atsume (宇和佐 集芽) uwasa is “rumor” and atsumeru is “to gather”; thus, her full name comes to “gather gossip”. Trivia: Producer Eshiro is a huge MGS fan; hence Myriam’s M.O. of traveling under the cover of a box.
Episode 4-5
Solomon Starbuck - Hoshinari Taiyou (星成 太陽) His name comes from the phrase “hoshi ni naritai yo”, which means “I wish to become a star”. taiyou, as written above, means “sun”.
Clay Terran - Aoi Daichi (葵 大地) aoi is the color “blue”. daichi is “ground” or “earth”; also refers to the planet itself. His relative calm and the color blue was chosen specifically to pair with Apollo’s bright and passionate red. (In fact, it may very well have been the localization’s choice to name Odoroki as Apollo that led to the development of this game’s space theme. I don’t remember if it was mentioned in an interview or not, but I’m sure it played some role.)
Yuri Cosmos - Oogawara Uchuu (大河原 有忠) His last name means “bank of the great river”, which is a reference to the Milky Way. It’s known as “The Great River” in several cultures, including Japanese. uchuu, written as 宇宙, means “space” or “universe”.
Aura Blackquill - Yuugami Kaguya (夕神 かぐや) Kaguya is a reference to a famous Japanese folktale from the 10th century, Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. The main character’s name is Kaguya-hime, or Princess Kaguya, who was one of a mysterious people living on the Moon but was sent down to Earth and raised by an old bamboo cutter. I’m not too sure if this tale inspired her English name, but when Princess Kaguya was discovered as a baby, she was described to be the size of a thumb and glowing with brilliant light. The Moon people were weird. (I can also draw the parallel to Simon’s Taka, since Aura may come from the Latin root aurum for “gold”.)
Ponco & Clonco - Ponko & Ponta (ポンコ&ポンタ) ko and ta are common endings to boys’ and girls’ names, respectively. Aura also likes to call Clonco “Ponkotsu”, referring both to how he’s basically “Ponco #2″ and ponkotsu, “junk”.
Metis Cykes - Kidzuki Mari (希月 真理) Her first name can also be pronounced shinri, meaning “truth”. In turn, shinri, when written as 心理, means “psychology”.
DLC Episode
Sasha Buckler - Umino Shouko (羽美野 翔子) umi is “sea”, and shouko, written as 証拠, is “evidence”. Thus, her full name becomes “evidence from the sea”. The first kanji in both first and last name have to do with “feathers” and “flight”. She’s quite a flighty personality for sure.
Ora "Orla" Shipley - Arafune Elle / Ale (荒船エル / エール) Her last name is made of the kanji for “wild” and “ship”. Her name is Ale, as a shortened form of “whale”, but it doubles as the alcoholic drink too. Actually, it triples as “air”, to complement her trainer. Her supposed real name is actually her sister’s name, and it seems it was just picked to sound similar.
Jack Shipley - Arafune Ryouji (荒船 良治) ryouji as 療治 means “treatment”/“cure”, possibly referring to how he saved two precious orcas and returned them to health.
Norma DePlume - Uratori Reika (浦鳥 麗華) uratori refers to “gathering evidence” as for a news story. reika as 冷夏 becomes “cool summer”. It can even be written as 零下 to mean "sub-zero". She’s quite the contrast to the rest of the sunny crew.
Edit: Note to self: simplify.
Marlon Rimes - Itsuka Ikuya (伊塚 育也) itsuka means “someday”; the kanji iku (育) means “raise”, as in pets or children. In other words, he’ll “become a real trainer someday”. His name may have been chosen for its easy rhyme as well.
Rifle (ライフル) She was named for her dangerous temper, and probably as a shout-out to Mr. Takumi’s naming of Missile. Her daughter Sniper also keeps the same name.
Herman Crab - Sugomori Gaku (巣古森 学) His last name may be referring to su-komori, or “nest-babysitter”, since he keeps li’l Sniper up there. Even the first kanji in his last name is the right one for “nest”. gaku as above is “learning” or “study of” a subject.
Azura Summers - Natsukaze Suzumi (夏風 邪涼海) natsukaze means “a summer cold”, but it can also literally mean “summer wind”. It was picked probably as a stark contrast to Norma’s Japanese name. suzumi is “cooling off”, like outdoors in the breeze.

Masturah Alatas takes a close look at the legacy and impact of her father’s seminal study of ‘Malayness’, The Myth of the Lazy Native, which turns 40 this year.
“Our Production Manager estimates that we would very likely have finished copies of both books in December, and would therefore be able to publish in January, 1977.”
With these long-awaited words that reached Singapore in a letter dated 14 September 1976, Malaysian sociologist Syed Hussein Alatas (1928-2007) received confirmation that his books, The Myth of the Lazy Native and Intellectuals in Developing Societies, would finally be published in London by Frank Cass.
Murray Mindlin was the Cass editor who wrote the letter. He also happened to be the Hebrew translator of James Joyce’s Ulysses, a fitting fact since The Myth of the Lazy Native (henceforth Lazy Native) was caught up in its own, long-drawn-out publishing odyssey. Shunned by publishers in Malaysia and Singapore, Alatas first submitted Intellectuals to Frank Cass in early 1972 at the suggestion of social anthropologist, Ernest Gellner. In corresponding with Cass editors about that book, later the same year Alatas casually mentioned that he was completing the Lazy Native that he had started working on in 1966.
“At the moment I am finishing a manuscript of about 100,000 words on the myth of the lazy native in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia, from the 16th to the 20th centuries. It is a study of the function and origin of this myth in the colonial ideology. Dutch, Malay and English sources are used. The discipline applied is the sociology of knowledge. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first work of its kind,” Alatas wrote.
Young editor Jim Muir, who would later become the BBC’s correspondent for the Middle East, immediately asked to see the manuscript. Struck by the title and subject, he felt Lazy Native “would probably fit very well into our Library of Peasant Studies.”
The story of the publishing vicissitudes of Lazy Native is documented in my book, The Life in the Writing (2010), as is the work’s international reception by the likes of Victor Gordon Kiernan, Edward W Said, Ziauddin Sardar and many others.
There are several ways to assess the status of Lazy Native in the 40 years of its existence. We can check databases to see where it has been cited and syllabi to know where it is taught. Social media will give us an idea of who is reading it, talking about it, and going to conferences, seminars and festivals where it is studied.
One could say that a revived interest in the book is due, in part, to the efforts of his son and my brother, Syed Farid Alatas, a sociologist at the National University of Singapore, not just through teaching, public speaking and his own writing but also because he solicited a reprint of a paperback and more affordable edition of Lazy Native from Routledge (2010). Malaysians will remember that the hardback Cass edition of Lazy Native once went for over 400 ringgit (roughly $US90 in today’s money). Syed Farid Alatas was also proactive in getting a second edition of the Malay translation of the book, Mitos Pribumi Malas, reissued with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (2009).
It is worth mentioning—as translation studies scholar Nazry Bahrawi has noted—that the Malay translation, or rather adaptation of Lazy Native from the 1987 Indonesian translation, contains some omissions, including excluded lines and passages that are present in both the English and Indonesian versions. One omission is the line “The degradation of the Malay character is an attempt by the ruling party to absolve itself from blame for real or expected failures to ensure the progress of the Malay community” (Lazy Native, 1977, p 181). The book contains no note from the translator, Zainab Kassim, as to the reasons for these omissions.
Whatever the case, we can conclude that irrespective of the availability of the book in English and Malay, what the quality of the Malay translation is, or how much or little it is actually read and talked about, Lazy Native seems to have found its place in the sun as a classic, and not just because Bahrawi and other scholars recognise it as a seminal text located within postcolonial theory. Not only has the Lazy Native walked right out of the Library of Peasant Studies into the libraries of Malay studies, cultural studies, sociology, history and literature—not to mention the personal libraries of many Malaysians— the book also seems to be sitting in the collective Malaysian imagination as a disgruntled trope, even though Syed Hussein Alatas himself had doubts about how many people had actually read and understood it.
It is therefore legitimate to ask: after 40 years, is the myth of the lazy native still a myth? Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad seems not to think so. According to him, the Malays are lazy because they don’t study hard enough, they can’t master English and they prefer to become Mat Rempit (motorcycle gangsters). What is missing from the narrative is if it is laziness or hard work that has to do with how the current Prime Minister, Najib Razak, was able to allegedly channel more than $1 billion into his personal bank accounts.
Historian Zaharah Sulaiman, instead, believes that if “Malays are called lazy and not innovative, it’s because the knowledge, the peoples who have the knowledge have gone extinct,” and that ‘foreign invasions’ that led to the ‘grabbing’ of riches has a lot to do with the extinction of this knowledge.
But in the chapter “The disappearance of the indigenous trading class”, Alatas does not so simplistically attribute the destruction of the trading class to foreign invasion. If anything, he provides sociological analysis showing how local rulers were sometimes complicit with colonial masters in bringing about the disappearance of the native trading class — for example when local chiefs acted as agents for the Dutch East India Company.
Alatas framed his critique of colonial capitalism that exploited the image of the lazy native with economic and sociological analyses. Indeed, he called it “colonial capitalism” and not white capitalism. And nowhere in Lazy Native does he blame the other ethnicities of Malaysia—the Chinese or the Indians—for the condition of the Malays.
It is important to understand this to distance the kind of critique Alatas performs in Lazy Native and the language he uses from, say, rants about “Chinese privilege” in Singapore, in which the term itself makes a direct link of ethnicity—one ethnicity in particular—to majority class and political privilege, and abuse of power. If Alatas has tried to help us see the wrongness in the ideological necessity of giving laziness a Malay face, we are invited to think about the wrongness in the ideological insistence of giving a Chinese face to privilege.
Finally, Lazy Native has inadvertently generated it own myth that needs to be debunked if we are to understand what unique scholarship really means— the claim that the book contributed to Edward W Said’s thesis on Orientalism. This claim has been made by several scholars all over the world.
Orientalism (1978) was already written and sent off to the publisher when Alatas’ book came out the year before Said’s did. At the time, the two men never even knew or corresponded with each other.
I know this because both men told me so.
Masturah Alatas is a writer and teacher who lives in Macerata, Italy. She is the author of The girl who made it snow in Singapore (2008) and The life in the writing (2010), a memoir-biography about her father, Syed Hussein Alatas.

Richard Vaughan: “English is taught as if it were a dead language” | Economy
Richard Vaughan (Houston, Texas) first came to Spain in 1972, for an academic year, and after graduating in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Texas, he returned in 1974 to spend two years that ended up becoming 45 (of moment). Those classes that started as a means to pay for their stay have turned into 30,000 hours of teaching in the classroom, 10,000 hours of radio lectures and more than 2,000 on television sets; He has supervised more than 10 million hours through his teachers and his name, as President of Vaughan Systems, is automatically associated with the teaching of English in Spain. He has even had time to compose music: a hobby that has led him to play the piano, the electric guitar and the Spanish classical, coming to present his work at both the Madrid Monumental Theater and the National Music Auditorium. We talked to him about teaching English in Spanish, and about the best way to learn a language.
THE COUNTRY: Every time a report on the knowledge of English is published, the Spanish never stand up well. Is it an endemic disease?
Richard Vaughan: We must not forget something: Spain is a large market. Small countries (with smaller populations and / or extension, such as the Netherlands, Greece or Malta), which historically have depended on foreign trade for their prosperity and which have a multilingual mentality, should be set aside. Nations with large internal markets such as Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Russia and even the United Kingdom have been able to develop their economies thanks to these markets, and historically they have not needed languages to generate wealth and ensure the well-being of their population; There has been no multilingual tradition. Spain had its overseas possessions in Latin America, the United Kingdom in India, France in Africa or Southeast Asia … Each used its own language.
EP: And where is the level of the Spanish, if we compare ourselves with countries of similar entity?
RV: If we place ourselves at the level of a supervisor or foreman, which is the bulk of the average business fabric, Spain can rub shoulders with France or Germany. In China, very few speak English. And the same thing happens in Japan … beware, the evil of many should not and cannot console anyone. Spain is wrong, but it is relative. There has been a lot of improvement; I would say that the level of English has doubled.
EP: What do you think of teaching English in the public or concerted school?
RV: The bilingual schools in Madrid, public and concerted, are experiencing an enormous improvement compared to 15 or 20 years ago. I did not agree with the way Esperanza Aguirre approached this change, but what I have found is that young people now understand much more and have lost their fear of speaking. They may not have a good command and still make mistakes, but they can get out of trouble.
Beyond these centers, and to the best of my knowledge, English continues to be poorly studied in both Primary and Secondary. It is studied as if it were a dead language, as if you were going to teach how to drive with a book and without getting into the car. This is so because in the classroom it is still taught theoretically. The kids have to memorize the irregular verbs but they don't hear native voices, and the tests are usually based on the theoretical reproduction of the grammar as if they were mathematical equations to reproduce on paper. And then two things happen: that they do not assimilate it and that they become fond of the language. Many boys “hate” English, they think it is a pain.
EP: And in the professional world?
RV: If I had to qualify the English level of the Spanish professionals when I came to Spain in 1974, I would say it was 1 or 2 out of 10, and now we can put it at 4. Spain still suffers, but also Italy, Germany … A prestigious doctor here goes to an international congress and cannot channel his knowledge in English; something similar happens with engineers, for example. At the managerial level, it is a problem with all companies in Spain, which can maintain brightness and confidence in English.
EP: When does English become essential?
RV: The child will not need English until the age of 23, which is the average age for entering the labor market. It is not necessary before, so you have all that time to acquire an excellent command of the language. Parents and educators have 23 years to fill this gap, and even then they do not succeed.
I tell parents to expose them to English from the moment they return with the baby from the hospital. An hour a day, to get used to the sound of the language and become familiar. Between the ages of three and 12, what you need to do is give them an ear and a decent pronunciation, exposing them to native voices. An hour a day is enough, but enjoy the language, which is part of your daily reality, without exams. How many school days are there per year? 160? Multiply that by 10 school years … That's already 1,600 teaching hours in which, in my opinion, they should not work with written materials, but with a curriculum of activities that include, for example, songs or poems for children.
EP: When are you in favor of introducing the written form?
RV: From the age of 13, when her mind begins to change and she is more analytical. Then they can start reading, but by then they already know how to speak perfectly. And you can also start teaching grammar: present, past, future, conditional … But they already have the most important part of the language, which is hearing.
EP: Why is it so important to expose babies to English, if they still lack the ability to understand what they hear?
Richard Vaughan, in the editorial staff of EL PAÍS. Jaime Villanueva
RV: From birth, a baby already receives six or seven hours a day “in class” in their mother tongue. When he begins to speak with that rag language, around the age of two, he already has 4,000 hours of exposure to his own language. If I give you 4,000 hours of German, and at the same time I take away your job, the mortgage and all the worries, you will have a great level.
EP: Is listening comprehension the most relevant thing then?
RV: You have to let the noise of the language caress your ear; You need to accumulate 1,000 hours of listening to understand a language well. I always recommend that, if you do not have much money, but you do have time, 70% of what you do is aimed at improving listening comprehension, with voices native to Scotland , United States, Australia, etc. Communication begins with the ear, with understanding the meanings and nuances. You will never speak perfect; I don't even do it. 29% is agility with basic grammar, and only the remaining 1% is vocabulary. This may sound surprising, but the vocabulary ends up being acquired. The lack of vocabulary has never been a decrease, but the lack of understanding and not being able to string together two thoughts are.
90% of everything we say in a language is basic, and it's in the first two books of a language. In terms of frequency of use, the verb to be is much more important than bother … We may use drink four times a day but to be it will be two or three times per minute. 30% of all the phrases we say in English contain some form of to be, which is like “the Sun King”. Then you have three prime ministers: to go, to have Y to want, and a council of ministers with verbs like to make, to get, to do, to take, to like, to meet…
EP: How does age affect the ability to learn a language?
RV: The best way to explain it is using the parable of the four trains: from zero to five years old, it is the AVE: if you go to the station with your child, you can take the AVE and assimilate English very easily. From 6 to 12, it is like the Talgo, which is also a very nice train. At these ages, the child still has a great advantage and can learn with some ease. But from 13 to 22 or 23, the train becomes an old locomotive from the 19th century.
After 23, if you have not been to the station, all you have to do is get off the track and start walking. You can get there, but obviously it costs you a lot more: it took me 3,000 hours to acquire my level of Spanish … At that age, with a job and even a mortgage, you don't have time, and there are very few who get to have a good command of starting from scratch or from very basic notions. Sometimes, people of 36 or 37 years come to me scared because they find professional doors closed because of English. They have distorted grammar and phonetics, so you have to go back and start from scratch.
We must make one thing clear: there are no magic formulas for learning a language. My sector attracts opportunists, because people want quick and painless solutions, without effort. People have to be disappointed: it takes a lot of effort, but it's worth it. So if you don't have an excellent teacher to act as a catalyst, inspirer and dazzler, to make the language “mole”, it is impossible to reach a good level in a language. It takes time, effort and many times money … And if you lack this, it will take more effort. But in the end you will come out not only with a second language, but with a sharper mind that will make you more master of your own destiny.
If we want to change the world, we must start with Infant and Primary, with teachers who dazzle children; gto tie the brain of the students passing through the heart.
EP: You do not recommend that your students watch series or movies in English. Why?
RV: Because hearing efficiency is very low. When someone with a medium level of English watches a movie of, say, 100 minutes, the conversational part may not be 15 minutes in total. The rest is action, etc.… I recommend radio or platforms like YouTube, where there are more than 10 million hours of spoken English, but also podcasts or any of the TED Talks talks.
Furthermore, movies and series are not a true reflection of the auditory reality of a language (nor is the teacher, for the opposite reason), and if you sit down to watch a movie and do not understand anything, you can become frustrated. . If understanding the teacher in the classroom has a difficulty factor of 10 out of 100, understanding the English of a real work meeting in London, New York or Melbourne will have a factor of 40 and the movies or series a factor of 100. When I came to Spain, it took me six months to understand 98%; but it took me three years to understand cinema well.
EP: So what advice can you offer to an adult who wants to learn English?
RV: First, find an excellent teacher; and if it is not, find another, even if it takes a year. When you have a teacher that you like, motivation is automatic, and it doesn't matter the subject that they teach you, because they are able to stimulate you and arouse your interest. The teacher is the central catalyst for learning; If everyone had the quality of the best educators you remember, imagine what you would be like today.
If we want to change the world, we have to start with Early Childhood and Primary Education, putting teachers who are able to dazzle children, to make them laugh and enjoy in the classroom. And then continue with the other levels. You have to win the brain of the students, and that is achieved by going through the heart. You have to approach teaching in an emotional way, and they will remember you.
Second, practice continuously. Ask Nadal what is the secret of his success… To master an art it is essential to master the foundations of that art; if you want good english, you have to work the foundations and have patience. People become obsessed with things like conditional, when we use it once every two days … In language, you have to focus on the simplest.
EP: Anything else?
RV: Yes. The third step is to gain ear and confidence, take the book and the teacher and throw them out the window. If you can, go live somewhere where no one speaks Spanish; panic and learn to stay afloat. Lose the fear of water, because the teacher is still the part of the pool where it does not cover, where there is no risk. It is a flight simulator, but it is not flying.
If you can't, there are alternatives such as our Vaughan Town program, where you spend six days in a context of total immersion, practicing English with one of the 1,200 foreign volunteers we bring each year. We rented rural hotels and cloistered a group of 15 or 16 Spaniards with as many English speakers to communicate in English.
In the end, it is about achieving results. The number 180 of the promotion at the Polytechnic can advance to number 1 if your level of English is much better; English blinds the reasoning of recruiters. I always say that I don't teach English; What we do is equip people with the ability to professionally maintain the type in English, that you can negotiate that contract and bring it under your arm with a medium spoken but aurally perfect English. That you understand the first time and that you are able to intervene effectively, speaking in English.

Essay代写:Flexner's idea of a modern university
In the book modern university theory -- a study of universities in the United States, Britain and Germany, flexner expounded the concept of universities through the investigation and research of many famous universities in the United States, Britain and Germany. Studying his related works and interpreting his university philosophy will help us understand how the university should harmoniously integrate with the modern world in the process of the development of The Times, and it is also of great reference value to the reform and development of modern universities in China.
It is the mission of modern universities to objectively reflect the characteristics and needs of The Times. When universities realize that they should keep close contact with the society, they should be relatively independent from the society to a certain extent. "The university is a manifestation of The Times, a force that influences the present and the future," said flexner. As time goes on, the university will undergo a series of changes, "which should be a sensible change based on needs, facts and ideals". Therefore, universities must choose and resist social fashion based on a certain core value and with an objective critical attitude as the key, so as to not only keep up with the pace of The Times and meet the needs of the society, but also keep the true character of universities and conduct research.
Although teaching and research are both functions of universities, research is obviously more important than teaching. Flexner believes that what a university should really pursue is scientific and academic work. He is serious and determined about academic research, and there is no room for fraud. All kinds of deviation from academic research will only make the university worse. When talking about the social service function of universities, he advocated that universities should serve the society by carrying out academic research work instead of directly participating in problem solving.
"A major is academic because it is deeply rooted in culture and idealism and has norms that embody an ideal," says flexner. The profession has, above all, an objective, rational, and altruistic purpose." In his view, the domestic service industry, business, all the work of occupational fields such as journalism, cannot be called "professional", and professional education is not just simply equated with narrow professional training, therefore the modern university should not be involved in these areas, the cultivation of talents in this field and should not be at the university of tasks and responsibilities. The purpose of a university is to cultivate thoughtful, knowledgeable, knowledgeable, and highly critical and exploratory people.
"A true university is an organism characterized by a noble and clear purpose, a unity of spirit and purpose. But clearly, America's best universities are not organisms, they are administrative aggregates." In flexner's view, a modern university should be as small and dynamic as gilman's Hopkins, not so large as to meet every need.
The core of a modern university is the graduate school, the major professional college, and some research institutes, such as the law and medical schools in the United States. He is also highly critical of Columbia's correspondence extension education, which he considers to be a typical business practice rather than an educational one. "Most of what Columbia offers is not education," says flexner. The whole thing is about business, not education." Therefore, flaxner firmly believes that the university is definitely not a profit-seeking field, it is the center of knowledge, is the place for the study of advanced knowledge.
Based on the above basic views, flexner was keenly aware that many famous universities in the United States were in a stage of confusion in the face of a series of social changes at that time. Although Britain was not as serious as the United States, it was occasionally shown. The German university of frexner is positive, he points out that the German university from the beginning to the end in a rational attitude to remain sober.
In terms of teaching purposes, flexner believes that the positioning of modern universities is not correct and the teaching purposes are biased. "research", as the most important function of universities, is not only not taken seriously, but also carried out many "service nature" work that should not be done. When it comes to teaching process and content, says flexner, "colleges don't know what they want, and even if they do know what they want, they don't get what they want.
Frexner criticized the false "credit view" of modern universities, saying: "as long as students accumulate enough 'credits' by simple calculation and consume enough hours or years, they have completed the' four years of secondary education '. It's not. It's often unintentionally reducing intelligence and effort." The student who passes the exam ends his/her study of the subject as a matter of course and, to a large extent, never touches upon it again, and therefore often leaves the subject for good. The poor quality of secondary education and the excessive "indulgence" in universities lead to the poor quality and weak foundation of the output from university education.
Flexner notes that some teens choose to go on to graduate school for a master's degree or a doctorate in philosophy, a marketable and lucrative activity in the education market because the higher the degree, the higher the salary. Moreover, many universities often confuse vocational education with professional education, as a matter of course. Flaxner argues that the world-renowned harvard graduate school of business and management is organizationally similar to the average professional business school, and that learning about business and news media is a waste of students' time and money. The school is very active in charging students' tuition, but in fact, the school is wasting their precious time and energy.
Some master of arts or even ph. d. dissertations, according to flexner, are so bizarre and pointless that "science" loses its flavor and "science" is no longer science. Frexner unsparingly criticized the literature of the sociology and education departments, saying that this part of the literature was meaningless, very simple, without any enlightening value or worth thinking about. For the literature deals only with trifles, and contributes nothing to the results which can be drawn from experience alone, or from the conclusions which can be drawn from common sense.
Flexner points out that a large part of the university's budget is spent on things that are not part of the university at all, as the university spends most of its money on complex administration, buildings and sports. If harvard spent all its current income on solid and high-level academic endeavors, its impact would be far more than twice that. Where funding is really needed, such as professors' salaries and spending on research projects, a lot is spent on school buildings and sports. In his opinion, only by rapidly raising the salary standard of professors can they retain the talents of researchers in more serious subjects, otherwise they will inevitably fall into the dilemma of insufficient researchers.
In order to expand the scale and benefits of higher education, China has implemented a series of university mergers. The expansion of the scale of universities leads to the increase in the service field of universities. The trivial service provided by universities puts forward certain requirements on the number of administrators and teaching staff. The large number of personnel required will affect the quality of personnel to a certain extent and also pose a threat to the quality of education. For a university, it is the top priority for its development to define its educational orientation and educational goals. It is necessary to reorient the functions of universities at different levels. For example, higher vocational colleges focus on cultivating application-oriented technical and skilled talents, and train a large number of senior blue-collar workers and craftsmen for the country. Research universities or graduate schools should focus on research and academic research and restore the academic status of universities.
Credit is used to judge the breadth of knowledge a student has learned in college. The more credits a student has, the more knowledge he or she has learned. At present, some universities regard credit as an important index to evaluate students' excellent degree and ignore the negative impact of credit, that is, they ignore students' interests, practical knowledge and academic ability cultivation in the process of blindly pursuing credit. Therefore, graduate schools should focus on the cultivation of students' academic interests and the improvement of their research ability. It is normal for graduate students to have no academic interest at the beginning, and they can be cultivated gradually in the process of continuous learning later. Once there is an interest in doing academic research and value recognition, it can form a drive, which is the first step to study academic and do research.
The utilitarian tendency of college students' learning motivation is not only a social problem, but also an educational problem. Some bad social atmosphere, western utilitarian values, exam-oriented education and reward mechanism are the important factors that contribute to the utilitarianism tendency of some college students. University, therefore, it is necessary to create a democratic, equal, civilized and harmonious campus culture and everyone involved, because the university campus can directly reflect the ethos, ethos has direct influence on college students through the set up and development of education for the students to guide, to highlight the cultivation of moral awareness and integrity, let college students learn to acquire knowledge at the same time assume corresponding social responsibility.
Concentration is the process of concentration, concentration, and concentration. Valuable research refers to the significance and importance of research problems. The premise of any research is that the research itself has some significance and value. Do academic research and results is a difficult and lengthy process, and as a result, a man who aims to delve into the academic, the first thing to prepare for the hardships and difficulties, the condensation of their time and energy to the study, believes that no ordinary study only ordinary attitude, so as to maximize enthusiasm, initiative and creativity, and strive to achieve academic goals.
In his modern university theory, flexner stressed that the foundation of a university is talent, and only by meeting its most basic material needs can it further retain talents. At the moment, some universities seem to be well funded, but faculty members are underpaid. Therefore, the university should reasonably plan the use of funds, including personnel, funds and equipment, should be restructured, determine the new direction of development, retain talents, ensure the quality of education, and win academic reputation.

WHAT NO ONE UNDERSTANDS ABOUT DROPOUT
Leonardo da Vinci. Wealth is what people want. I would often help them find new names. At Viaweb, we would have been, if they hadn't had to write a parser or a regular expression library. For most people, the most powerful tools you can find a good teacher. The one big chunk of code available then was Unix, but even this was not open source. Most of the people have half the total wealth, they tend to think it's the idea I'd want to be the default plan in big companies. I'm increasingly convinced this type of thinking is not merely helpful in solving hard problems.1
I was in college, a lot of the great masters, because copying forces you to look closely at the way a painting is made.2 As I was mulling over these remarks it struck me how familiar they seemed. But there's nothing to stop you starting new projects of your own.3 Hackers, likewise, requires a fanatical devotion to beauty. Like guerillas, startups prefer the difficult terrain of the mountains, where the troops of the central government can't follow. To me it means, all that people learn in the course of working honestly on hard problems.4 I learned to think of math as a collection of formulas that were neither beautiful nor had any relation to my life despite attempts to translate them into word problems, but necessary.5 But if it were, taking money from a top firm would generally be a bargain.
But money is just the intermediate stage—just a shorthand—for whatever people want.6 0 applied to music would probably mean individual bands giving away DRMless songs for free. I got to Yahoo, I found that I did not program this way. The Internet is a genuinely big deal. Going upstairs his bulk will be more of a disadvantage.7 The second biggest is the worry that, if they don't buy you now, you'll be a grad-school dropout, and you shouldn't go unless you want to start your own company.8 Now we can recognize this as something hackers already know to avoid: premature optimization.
A programming language is, they'll say something like Oh, a high-level language is what the compiler uses as input to generate object code. White than from an academic philosopher.9 If i is the average outcome of the whole company moving in one direction or another.10 Ajax means is Javascript now works. The danger with grad school is close to paradise. I just gave. Technology that's valuable today could be worthless in a couple weeks.11
This was naturally a great incentive, and possibly indeed the main cause of the second big change, industrialization.12 One answer is the default way to solve problems you're bad at marketing. Because an ordinary employee's performance can't usually be measured, he is not expected to devote your whole life, and save every penny of your salary.13 This, as we then thought, let it slip by. 43, meaning that deal is worth taking if they can improve your outcome by 10%, you're net ahead, you wouldn't need PR firms to tell you, because hackers would already be writing stuff on top of it, they'll take away your market overnight. CEOs also have both measurement and leverage. Big companies can develop technology that's simply too hard for competitors to duplicate, you don't need to rely on other defenses. This was naturally a great incentive, and possibly indeed the main cause of the second big change, industrialization. That might be a good deal is that the project is technically, and that can probably only increase your earnings by a factor of ten of measuring individual effort. There is a conservation law at work here: if you trade half your company, but it is not only manufacturing companies that create wealth. And so there is a natural fit between smallness and solving hard problems, as a way to steal it. In theory a liberal education is not supposed to supply job training.
It just means doing things right, and it's hard for the people running a company to pick these out. So although there may be, in certain specific moments like your family, this month a fixed amount of wealth in the world. You open a door and find yourself in a situation with two things, measurement and leverage would be lead actor in a movie. Because painters leave a trail of work behind them, you can get the first deal. If you can't measure the value of your work. One of the biggest remaining groups is computer programmers.14 In hacking, this can literally mean saving up bugs. The whole field is uncomfortable in its own right, and it's a bad sign when you have a special word for that.15 Of course, all other things often are not equal: the able person may not care about money will ordinarily do better to go off and work with a small group, and leverage from developing new techniques. I suppose that's worth something. It's hard to get money.
Notes
In high school junior.
If the startup after you, they sometimes say. One of the next year or two make the argument a little about how the stakes were used. They thought most programming would be better for explaining software than English.
The shares set aside a chunk of time and get data via the Internet.
But core of the advantages of not starving then you should be working on is a major cause of poverty are only arrows on parts with unexpectedly sharp curves. And yet I think the top and get nothing.
That would be great for VCs if the growth is genuine. By mid-century big companies to acquire the startups, and B doesn't, that I see a clear upward trend. As well as a constituency. Keep heat low.
That's probably too much to seem big that they discovered.
And in World War II had disappeared. Steven Hauser. I got it wrong in How to Make Wealth in Hackers Painters, what if they make money, the world in verse.
The average B-17 pilot in World War II had disappeared in a reorganization.
The biggest counterexample here is one of the iPhone too, of S P 500 CEOs in the old one was drilling for oil, which is as blind as the average car restoration you probably do make everyone else and put our worker on a seed investment in you, what that means the right way. A Bayesian Approach to Filtering Junk E-Mail. There is of course, that all metaphysics between Aristotle and 1783 had been a waste of time on a wall is art. Math is the extent to which the inhabitants of early 20th century was also obvious to your instruments.
A friend who started a company with benevolent aims is currently undervalued, because you have to spend, see what the US since the war, tax loopholes defended by two of each type of thing. Revenue will ultimately be hurting yourself, because such companies need huge numbers of people like them—people who had been climbing in through the founders enough autonomy that they create rather than geography.
I don't like. I don't know how to be some things it's a hip flask.
If all the money, the whole world is boring. Many hope he was before, and it has about the millions of dollars a year to keep their stock. At first literature took a back seat to philology, which is the unpromising-seeming startups that has become part of a problem, but Javascript now works.
Because we want to work with the talking paperclip. Digg are especially sneaky, but he refused because a friend who started a company. People commonly use the standard series AA paperwork aims at a 30% lower valuation. With a classic fixed sized round, no one thinks of calling that unfair.
You can relent a little worm of 1988 infected 6000 computers. Stir vigilantly to avoid companies that tried to pay dividends. If you have to replace you. 4%?
But while it is to trick admissions officers. I'm not saying we should, because you have more money.

If Only I Knew My Worth…
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live it’s whole life believing that it is stupid.” ~Albert Einstein
Looking back on my past, I see that I have spent most of my precious time striving to improve myself instead of celebrating the very gift of being alive and healthy. For many years, I though I wasn’t good enough, and perfection was my worst enemy.
I considered myself pretty but not beautiful, somewhat smart but not truly intelligent. In other words, I thought of myself as “average,” not outstanding. I grew up with the fear of getting bad grades in school because if I ever did, that would have made a new reason for me to feel ashamed and unworthy.
In the Eastern-European schooling system I grew up with, I was always compared to others and every day in school felt like a never-ending competition and fight for the glory of being the first in class. It was tough. I hardly had any free time to play, and most of my days were filled up with homework.
I spent quite a few years in school, including university. I held successful jobs in a big corporation, and I traveled the world with work. And I invested a lot of money, time, and energy into studying and growing in my career.
I’ve gotten to learn a lot about history, mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, literature, music, and foreign languages. Despite all that, there is one essential topic I would have liked the schooling system to prepare me for: how to know my own value.
So here’s what I didn’t realize at the time and what I know to be true today:
If only I knew my own worth…
I would have stopped focusing on my weaknesses, flaws, and imperfections without even being aware of my natural strengths, gifts, and talents.
I would have stopped fighting for perfection and punishing myself for every tiny mistake I might have made. I would have known that perfection was nothing but an illusion of the mind, and didn’t exist.
I would have acknowledged the hard work and efforts behind my achievements instead of attributing my accomplishments to luck or other people who gave me chances to succeed.
I would have stopped making myself small each time I achieved something good, as if “that wasn’t anything special” or “anyone else could have done it.”
I would have stopped taking myself for granted, being aware of the value I was going to bring to any of my employers with my personal set of skills and abilities. I could understand that getting paid for my knowledge was nothing but fair game. I would have found the courage to ask for a raise and negotiate my salary, and I would have never ended up underpaid.
I would have stopped comparing myself to others, knowing that everyone is on their own journey. I could celebrate other people’s successes instead of fearing I might not earn the same amount of money or get the same amount of love. I would have understood that life doesn’t have to be a fight or an exhausting competition—that there is enough of everything and for everyone, including myself.
I would have felt at ease when praised by others, embracing compliments with grace. I wouldn’t have made myself small or put myself down as if I wasn’t worthy of such a celebration.
I wouldn’t have acted like a master of people pleasing, not daring to say no to the things I didn’t really want to do, fearing people wouldn’t like me any longer. I wouldn’t have felt like I owed anyone any apologies or any explanation for the way I was spending my time and with whom. My time means life and it’s never coming back.
I wouldn’t have expected others to make me happy, fulfill my needs, and keep my cup full of love, care, and attention. I wouldn’t have expected any man to make me feel valued, cherished, wanted, and loved, knowing that my happiness was my responsibility and every else was a bonus.
But despite all that, here’s the gain in pain, the blessing in disguise, and the real gift of my life experience:
I am convinced that we live in a smart, intelligent Universe where everything unfolds perfectly, and everything happens for a good reason.
I am not here to blame anyone for anything. I am not a victim. Society did the best it could at the time. So did my parents and my teachers. My life circumstances have nothing to do with my future, and I am the one co-creating my reality through how I think, act, and feel. It is my birthright to be happy, only because I am human. I am here to grow and learn more about life and myself.
It is never too late to step into my power and feel worthy of the best things life has to offer: good health, love, and abundance. When I value myself, others will value me as well.
Today, I know I couldn’t do my empowering work in the world from a place of authenticity and power without going through such a disempowered experience myself. There is no light without darkness.
I stopped explaining myself for what I want and for who I am. I am not afraid to step into my greatness. I am perfectly beautiful and beautifully imperfect, and this allows me to be me. I have learned how to love and approve of myself, exactly the way I am.
I have come to realize that in life, we don’t always get what we want because we only pursue what we think we deserve. That’s why it’s crucial that we believe in ourselves and see ourselves as enough and worthy of the best things life has to offer.
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.” ~Henry Ford
