'"i jerk off to you every night!"'
i was so happy dancing in the streets,
mouthing the words to
'it's not unusual'
while people stared and scattered around me.
i touched the Hem of Him,
so i think i'm 'allowed' to rejoice.
and, besides,
it is merely an expression of joy,
the only real one i could make without pain at that time
with me and my
'limited range of 'motion.'
'did you put out a hit, man?' you ask.
i said, 'i said, "i jerk off to you every night!"'
in a snotty little voice,
the only one i could rasp away,
to laugh it off,
but it's true.
well, not that i said it,
but the sentiment still stands.
'did you check the trunk?' you ask him instead of me.
and i just nod like it's funny
to put my love down like that.
i'm glad you think it's so hilarious
that i could ever be happy
and that i could ever love(,) being mentally ill.

The cliches of the 60's keep mentioning their musicians' countercultural acumen or so the story goes. However, how can we understand Tom Jones' success then? Before you protest, I agree he has many qualities, yet he doesn't fit the prevailing narrative of the 60's despite being one of the biggest popstars at the time. He felt like a member of the old guard in the vein of Sinatra. Strangely enough, the latter actually told him to ditch the rock stuff, while Elvis, another model of his, advised him to stay there. Yes, Tom Jones is one of those peculiar types that belonged to a different era than the one they were in. Still, this might have given him a surprising longevity that found him working with everyone – from Trevor Horn to Chicane.
