What are your top 5 Marvel movies and why?
Ughhh, this is so hard! THERE ARE SO MANY EFFING MARVEL THINGS. And there are so many that I love pretty equally but for different reasons/in different moods?
But okay. If I take the TV shows out of the equation entirely -- because my #1 Favorite Marvel Thing is WandaVision, 100% -- then I thinkkkkk arghshjsfhgsfhgjhsjfhj okay.
5. Spider-Man: No Way Home *OR* Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 4. The Marvels 3. Spider-Man: Far From Home 2. Captain America: Winter Soldier *OR* Black Widow 1. Ant-Man and the Wasp
I know, controversh list. A lot of Phase 4. A lot of post-Endgame. But I really like the movies that are character-driven, and I feel like these are the movies that all have pretty significant scenes outside of the main plot. Like there are scenes in all of these movies that are just... the heroes hanging out and being people, or delving into their past, or reconnecting with their families. ESPECIALLY reconnecting with their families/loved ones.
AMATW is literally about getting Janet back and reuniting Scott with the Pym/Van Dynes, CATWS is about getting Bucky back, Black Widow is about Natasha realizing that she "had two [families]" all along, The Marvels is about Monica and Carol reuniting, Shang-Chi is about the Xu family legacy, NWH just fucking breaks my heart with Peter and May. FFH is kind of an outlier on the family front, but it's very much an Irondad story, and Peter is the only thing that makes Tony interesting to me.
They're all movies that ask the hero to pick who they're going to live for, rather than who they're willing to die for, and they all get really... non-romantic answers (except Stucky, obviously, which is the most romantic ship that has ever existed in the history of Earth). They're also all movies that grapple with the idea of Legacy, which is such a big part of superhero stuff but rarely gets more than lip service.
I also feel like it probably says something about me that Ava, Bucky, and Antonia are all "the villains" of my Top 3 and those sweet babies are NOT VILLAINS AND HAVE NEVER DONE ANYTHING WRONG, EVER. SAVE THEM. GIVE THEM SOUP. AND BLANKETS. AND AUTONOMY.
And the only villain in my list who I'd say is like, Unilaterally A Bad Guy is Mysterio.
Peter successfully rehabilitates his villains in NWH, because that's who Peter is.
WenWu is just... so fucking sad and heartbroken and tragic, and like... Is WenWu's Plotline Not Just WandaVision But With Ten Rings Instead Of The Hex?
And yeah, Dar-Benn does very much attempt some genocide, but she is also trying to survive a planetary extinction and genocide, and I understand where she's coming from in her desperation, and I don't think that she's Evil. My feelings on the Kree/Skrull dichotomy in the MCU are complex and needlessly political in a way that I shan't get into because the MCU itself never will, either, so why bother.
Like, of the villains in my favorite MCU films, Ava is desperate and brainwashed, Bucky is brainwashed and desperate, Antonia is brainwashed and desperate, Dar-Benn is desperate, WenWu is desperate and brainwashed, The Sinister Six are all desperate (and some brainwashed)... the only True Baddie here is, again, Mysterio.
And like, we knew... all too well... nyuk nyuk... that Jake Gyllenhaal was bad.
IDK. These are my favorite MCU films because they have my favorite character dynamics/interactions in the MCU front and center. I love Scott and Cassie, Scott and Hope, Scott and Luis. I love Steve and Bucky, Steve and Sam, Steve and Natasha. I love Natasha and Yelena, Natasha and Alexei, Yelena and Alexei, Natasha and Milena. I love Peter and MJ, Peter and Ned (and Ned and Betty, LMAO), Peter and Tony('s legacy). I love Kamala and Carol, Carol and Monica, Monica and Kamala, and the Khan family. I love Shang-Chi and Xialing, Katy and Shang-Chi. I love Wong. I love Aunt May. I love the three Peters. I love Ned's Lola. I love Otto Octavius. I love the dynamics that boil down to "the hero loves this person enough to become a better person for them."
"The hero loves this person enough to become a hero."
They're also all kind of found family movies? Or friend-group movies, at least? IDK. I just like them.

Yo what romance you reading? 👀 Also any recs welcome spread the good taste ✊😩
FJFKJF when i wrote that post i was definitely reading motherland: fort salem fanfiction 😅 i’ve been staying up too late reading fanfiction like some sort of 20 year old who can still do that without risking their health.
BUT i’ve been reading a lot of lesbian romance this year and i’m absolutely down to provide some recs! important disclaimer, however, i only read one (1) subgenre that’s best described as “ice queen lesbian milf office romance” ft an age gap between 21+ adults. understandably this is not everyone’s jam, but i am simply a 20something lesbian who thinks older women are really hot. what can i say
here are five recs in order of preference:
1. “truth and measure” by roslyn sinclair - the original adapted novel version of the same-titled legendary mirandy/devil wears prada fic. jules moretti is the long-suffering assistant of vivian carlisle, the CEO of a prestigious fashion magazine. then vivian gets pregnant mid divorce, with only jules by her side. and it only gets gayer from there.
listen. i genuinely could not stop reading truth and measure by roslyn sinclair. for three days, i woke up, vaguely did my adult tasks, and read for several hours in a state of what i can only call hysteria. the chemistry is insane. vivian is a hot mean loser with sad eyes and jules is insane for every choice she makes. btw i imagined the nanny!era lauren lane as vivian and current day alison scagliotti as jules. i had the time of my life. 10000/10
(also: i still highly recommend the published version to anyone who read the og fic - the story feels both brand new and wonderfully, nostalgically familiar.)
2. “the headmistress” by milena mckay - sam threadneedle, a closeted math teacher working at a conservative girls boarding school, hooks up with an insanely hot older woman at a conference in the city. three months later, that same hot older woman shows up at the school. woops, she’s the new principal and she’s there to cause problems! the prose is decent, the melodrama is fun to read, and the chemistry is zesty. solid 8/10
3. “the music and the mirror” by lola keeley - based on a supercat/supergirl fic of (i think) the same name. anna, the newest member of a prestigious ballet company, really wants to impress victoria, the former prima ballerina turned artistic director. well, she definitely does that! victoria decides that anna is going to be her company’s new star. this one has a lot of homoerotic partner dancing and really great side characters. still reads like a supercat fic, but honestly that’s another plus. 9/10
4. “the love factor” by quinn ivins - set in the 90’s, this book follows a closeted statistics professor and her TA, a very out lesbian political science phd candidate, as they expose a homophobic professor for falsifying data and fall in love. not as horny as others i’ve read, but still wildly tender and cathartic. i loved also how much empathy this book showed towards closeted lgbt folks. 7/10
5. “something to talk about” by meryl wilsner - also based on a mirandy fic, this book follows the misadventures of a hollywood showrunner and her assistant when they’re mistaken for a couple at a red carpet event. this book strained my suspension of disbelief the most—i simply don’t think everyone in emma’s life would be rooting for her to date her boss LMAO—but the chemistry is great and the pining is unreal. 7/10

Tin & Tina (2023)
Tumblr media
If you only ace one part of your movie, make it the ending. For the most part, I was enjoying Tin & Tina but it didn't seem like anything special. After the final act, my thoughts on it changed completely - for the better. Due to that period of uncertainty, I have to be slightly conservative with my rating, but this is a movie I’ll remember down the line.
Set during the early 1980s, in Spain, Lola (Milena Smit) and Adolfo (Jaime Lorente) have just said their marriage vows when they unexpectedly lose their unborn twins in a miscarriage. Hoping to make their family whole again, the couple adopt twins Tin (Carlos González Morollón) and Tina (Anastasia Russo) from a nearby religious convent. Lola soon becomes suspicious of the children, though Adolfo insists their odd behavior stems from innocence rather than malice.
When we meet the twins, they seem needlessly creepy. They’re either albino or extremely blonde, they’ve got weird haircuts and their smiles are too big. The children are extremely religious. They've never watched TV, they quote the Bible for fun, the idea of not saying grace before a meal mortifies them. It's offputting but you can understand where that behavior comes from since they were raised by nuns. They're introduced playing the organ with a skill far beyond their years (reminded me of “The Orphan”), which is another sure sign that these kids are baaad news. Despite their appearances and strange habbits, you can see why Lola wants to adopt them, however. As a child, she lost a leg. She was also a “weird” kid and she’s specifically looking to replace the twins she lost.
Soon after arriving to their new home, Tin and Tina's actions raises some serious red flags. Not necessarily the kind that exposes them as evil but they would make any sane parent go back to the orphanage and ask the sister in charge (sor Asunción, played by Teresa Rabal) if she ever noticed anything weird from them. Less patient parents would go to the police and tell them to investigate the orphanage. Whatever those nuns are teaching the rugrats, it’s going to make them all into serial killers. Even for loving parents who really want a family, even for the place and the time period, Lola & Adolfo are way, way too cool with what happens. No one watching would tolerate some of the horror movie behavior exhibited. It’s enough to make you want these people to fall victim to whatever terrors await them once the kids turn full-on evil. I mean when you can’t read ANY of the signs, you deserve it.
Although I still feel like sometimes, Lola – and to a certain extent Adolfo too – let things that no one else, not even a saint, would let slide and that is frustrating, the ending changes all of that. This movie is much smarter than it seems. You see the creepy kids, you witness the horror-movie behavior, you think you know exactly where the plot is headed. You dismiss the characters as too stupid to live and essentially give up. What you don't realize is that you’re the one who's made the mistake. There’s something you haven’t considered while evaluating this story and probably wouldn't have in a million years: the possibility that although this is a horror film, the children aren’t actually evil. What if they’re not the problem? What if it’s Lola and Adolfo?
There are indeed subtle details that hint at the couple not being idyllic. At the orphanage, Adolfo insists that they’re only for children free from deformities. His wife wears a prosthetic leg. She has since childhood. What does this statement say about him? We find out that Lola has a bitter relationship with God. Bitter enough to make her subconsciously hate children who love Him more than anything else? Maybe. Trust me. I know not knowing if a movie is better than "just ok" for nearly 2-hours is hard, particularly with several developments that make you think "Oh come on. How many more signs do you need?!" but it all comes together so well during the conclusion you'll feel foolish for having doubted the film.
There may also be a deeper meaning to some elements of the picture, since it's set during a tumultuous period of Spain's history that I'm not familiar with. I can't say for sure. What I do know is that Tin & Tina deserves your patience. I'm still not 100% sure the characters are not a little bit dumb but that conclusion is so solid I'm more than willing to forgive it. It's scary and makes you think in the most unexpected way. (Original Spanish with English subtitles, May 28, 2023)

okay hi, hello, i’ve been very m.i.a because work has just honestly been kicking my ass but under the cut i’ve put what happened to my charas during the earthquake ! rn i’m going to keep a few important threads from before the event but i’m going to focus on new ones too so i’ll probably post a starter/plotting call on monday ! anyway love u guys, missed u all, fingers crossed work stops killing me v soon 🥰
MILENA was at the resort, she did the wine tasting workshop ( bc of course she did ) & the argentine cooking class before going back to her room with to feed katya. she was in the lobby when the earthquake hit because she was returning from a nighttime walk to get katya to settle. tbh i don’t think she did anything, probably just sat in a chair and watched the chaos unfold and glared at anyone who dared disturb her sleeping kid.
BEAU was in the camping group with lola, very studiously avoiding ari and biel, as usual. when everything happened he got a few cuts and scrapes, the only one worth noting is a laceration on his back that required stitches. once he got up and started moving around his priority was getting to wherever lola was, tears were shed, if time wasn’t important he probably would have just had a meltdown. instead he found biel and, albeit reluctantly, helped get him to the nearby village and then later, to the hospital. they talk during all this and while they’re not fixed they don’t want to kill each other anymore.
SALVATORE was on his way back to the resort with his hiking group when the earthquake hit, a tree fell and in his attempt to avoid it he tripped and died #ripsav broke his dominant hand. dramatic as he is, he took it as a sign and rather than travelling to tokyo, he decided to go back to italy to supervise the renovations of his new home and to maybe focus on being a good duke since gio gave him the title. ( he’ll be back, i love him too much for him to be gone forever 🥰)

Weddings are supposed to be happy, a bright place of celebration. But the last thing Milena feels right now is happiness.
Their home stadium is filled with people, not for the usual reason, which would be a football match. No. It’s Laura and Regina’s wedding; after they looked for venues all over Buenos Aires, they decided to have the ceremony and party at their club’s stadium. Their home.
The place is filled with lights and people to the brim, with laughter drowned out by the speakers blasting music from corner to corner. It’s, arguably, the happiest she’s seen all of her teammates. The newlyweds haven’t left each other’s side since the ceremony, flashing perfect smiles for the cameras and dancing to every song.
It’s a perfect night, really, and it makes her feel all the more guilty for not being able to let go and enjoy it.
It just so happens that tomorrow her own love is leaving, flying across the sea to play for a club in a country she doesn’t speak the language of. No wonder she feels hollow and bitter.
Laura and Regina are barely starting their own fairy tale, and hers is ending.
“Don’t say that, honey, I’m sure you two could make long distance work,” Lola tries to console her, but it’s Lola, and she’s optimistic even in the worst situations; she’s maintained a long distance relationship with Lyana for months now, visiting every other month. It’s easy for her to say that.
“You don’t know that, Lolo.” She sighs, almost rubbing her face before remembering her make-up. “It’s just—did I dream too big, thinking we could come back from the Olympics and be a happy couple? Do I have to let her go?” Her voice falters only a little, and Lola can only offer her a few pats on the back before she leaves to the dancefloor again.
Milena stares at the packed party with eyes void of emotion, waiting for a message that never comes, daydreaming about Nerea tapping on her shoulder and inviting her to dance with her. But that never happens.
She cries her make-up off in the bathroom, wishing her girlfriend wasn’t moving to half across the world by sunrise.

✔️ skam france and druck
tysm keira!! 💜💜
✔️ favorite characters from:
skam france: i said this in another ask but lola!! i literally cannot view s6 or her objectively sorry bc i just see so much of my 16 year old self in her character and it really does hurt lmaoooo. i will literally never forgive skamfr for what they put her through and that’s a promise. like god the way she tries to be so cold and distant but she really does care so much and has so much love to give but also doesn’t believe she deserves it in return...me @ me: shut up you’re making me cry. also she’s honestly so funny but in such a dry bitter way!! “talent” and “i prefer lol” make me scream. when we see her smile and support lamifex next season...i’m honestly not ready.
also how could i forget france’s worst reviewed supermarket checkout gal <3 delusional maya s8 warriors make some noise! stay strong!
druck: it changes all the time!! i’ll say sam, david, matteo, amira and hanna are all eternal faves but rn it’s probably mia because i just re-watched the winterberg breakup scene and like. my hearts aches :( where is milena’s egot...(although obviously hate that it occurred during amira’s season and that does sour her for me a lil but that’s on the writers so).
also we haven’t met her yet so this is subject to change but nora! she ignored kiki’s facetime request! how bad can she be!

30 - Slaughter
I ran as fast as I could, slaloming between the buildings. I made my way to a narrow alley, catching my breath a little. This was supposed to be a nice night. A nice night, with just my friends and I. A nice night in a nice village, a long way from our lives. It was barely dark outside when things went the wrong way. When we first heard the scratching noise of metal against the asphalt, alerting Miles who looked at the window. At first, we laughed at that strange shadow, in a foolish superior feeling. But then the silhouette actually came by our door, hitting it over and over again with the scythe. Everything happened very fast after this. I was yanked backwards by Milena, who forced us out as the man entered the apartment, smashing his blade directly in Jules’ head.
Out of the eight of us, we were six to make it out of the rental place, Lola being close to Jules, the man killed a right after. We tried to seek help form the neighbors. We went to every single house we could find on our way. In spite of the lights coming from inside, no one opened their doors. They left us to face the man with the scythe all by ourselves. Out of the six of us, only Miles had kept his phone on him, but even with service, it wouldn’t connect to the emergency number. We had made our way to a supermarket, hiding behind the shelves, trying not to make any noise. Milena had her arm wrapped around my shoulders, in a way to reassure both of us, I presumed.
Suddenly, there was a bang coming from the office. Another silhouette came inside, a machete in hand. The first man came by the front door, surrounding us. We all ran as fast as we could, in a panicked state. I’m not sure how many made it out of the supermarket alive. We all got separated after that. And there I was, hiding in a tight alley. I don’t know how long I stayed immobile there. Probably hours, for the sun was slowly coming up again when I left my somewhat safe spot. Each street was maculated by blood, proof of the horrendous slaughter that just took place. I faced each and every one of their bodies, catching now and then the eye of a picking neighbor through the window. Out of the eight of us, I was the only one to survive the massacre.

Logan is the other reactor who usually joins J and M in live streams and they talk about the 100. His twitter and YouTube channel is simplereactions.
The other two girls who also join their lives are Lola and Milena, and their channel is lmreactions. The two girls stated that they cut off ties with J and M after finding out. And good on them. And they’re not even from the US!
So apparently some certain reactors got cancelled for being Trump supporters. I won’t name names but 🤭 I officially unsubbed from them. Nasty skanks.

Costume Design in Early Films: History, Icons, Transformation, and Magic (Part 2) by Paola C. Quintero
The 1920’s period, right after the end of World War II, brought a sense of greater freedom, optimism, and prosperity in the United States. American women finally gained their right to vote in 1920, but even if “the great expectations for it were not realized, since few female candidates ran for political office and no separate women’s vote developed”, societal norms towards women were changing.
During this decade, some women started to dress more comfortably by wearing pants and less constrictive fabrics. Jersey was introduced, a “soft, stretchable knitted fabric first used in the late 19th century for sportswear and outerwear. In the 1920’s, pioneered by Chanel, it was made into dresses and two-piece suits and became the most fashionable fabric of the period. It can be made of cotton, nylon, rayon, wool or synthetic fabrics”.
In Buster Keaton’s silent comedies of the 1920’s the female characters have very simple construction. In the short silent film titled One Week, Keaton’s wife’s dresses have a slender, casual silhouette while the skirt usually goes down to mid-calf, a length of dress that would not have been seen in the early 1900’s.
Another one of Keaton’s early Films, Neighbors, actress Virginia Fox also wears modest and conservative costume designs, which seem very modern for those days. The dress that she wears in court in front of the judge could easily be worn today (with a minor adjustment of length). Other women in the house party wear long flow-y dresses, and it is obvious by looking at these styles that the crinoline, corset, and bustle are long gone. Another sign of modernity is Ms. Fox’s haircut, the modern and trendy short bob; very popular style in the 1920’s. The women in Keaton’s seem used to wearing these clothes, as they move freely and look comfortable in them.
At the end of 20’s decade, in Flesh and the Devil, Greta Garbo, wears a wardrobe by Andre-Ani, a costume designer who worked at MGM from 1925 to 1928. In this film, Ms. Garbo plays Felicitas, an elegant upper class countess. Felicitas is a young, beautiful seductress and an unfaithful wife. She becomes the object of desire that finds herself in the middle of a love triangle.
Andre-Ani mirroring her character, dresses Garbo in luxurious and shiny fabrics that at times frame her beautiful face. She wears short fitted jackets, a modern V-neck blouse showing cleavage, hats with veils, and loose skirts below the knee, finishing off the look with low-heeled black pumps. In another sexy look in the film Ms. Garbo wears an ultra- fitted sleeveless dress that shows off her body. The fabric is soft, lightweight, and sheer. This sensual dress perfectly enhances her vamp character.
In 1930 Marlene Dietrich appeared as Lola Lola in the The Blue Angel, stealing the show in her role of cabaret showgirl. The Marlene Dietrich from the early movies of her career is very different from the Marlene of her later movies. She was one of those actresses that kept reinventing herself, but even as she turned into a fashion icon, her style remained constant throughout her film career.
Wearing playful cabaret dances costumes in The Blue Angel, Dietrich steals a philistine professor’s heart with her coquettish singing and dancing, ultimately destroying him. Early on Marlene displayed the star quality and glamour that she would later become famous for. Her costumes were spectacular and served their proper purpose, since she was not a breathtaking knockout in this movie, prior to her transformation into Hollywood star.
The character was even a bit overweight and wore simple dresses with rolled-up sleeves when not working at the cabaret. Yet Lola Lola in her charming ensembles enchants the audience with her sense of humor, eroticism, but most of all the confidence in herself. It is later, when she moves to Hollywood that her transformation takes place.
Edith Head was an important accomplice in the glamorous Hollywood transformation of Marlene Dietrich. “Fashion is a language. Some know it, some learn it, some never will- like an instinct...but Dietrich was born knowing,” said Edith Head of Dietrich in her autobiography. Dietrich’s values reflected her professional attitude towards acting, “the prerequisites for her career were: discipline, loyalty, self-control, duty and work. ‘And a love of duty. A love of work while doing it. And a love of the constant responsibility’.”
It takes a lot of work to become a legend, it seems. Dietrich was a collaborator with Ms. Head in the creation of the characters’ costumes and came to the fittings prepared to work. Edith writes, “Symbol of glamour? You should see her at 6:30am, without make- up, freshly scrubbed and crackling with energy.”
In “The Blue Angel” we get to see the very beginning of Dietrich’s acting career. Towards the end of the movie the roles reversed: the professor’s downfall is represented by the clown costume he wears on stage. In contrast, we witness Lola Lola’s rise, perfectly symbolized by her clothes, foreshadowing her rise as a Hollywood star.
She is no longer a “cheap chorus girl in a tacky outfit who displays her charms to everyone who dares to puff at her ever-so-naughty skirt feathers,” instead she wears a costume and hat that was put together by Dietrich herself, representing the freedom and of the tradition of the road.
Edith Head was one such designer that used the magic of clothes to transform and transport audiences and actors alike. She is the creator of hundreds of looks during her long career in a male-dominated Hollywood. In the early days of her career as costume designer at Paramount, Edith was unsure on whether she could or should continue working in that field. She had started without any formal experience in fashion design or art. Her background was as a schoolteacher teaching French to girls, after receiving a master’s in French Literature from Stanford University.
Looking for a summer job she replied to a want ad posted by Howard Greer, who was looking for a sketch artist. She showed up at the interview with a portfolio of sketches made by artist school mates- not by her- and was hired on the spot. On the first day of work the truth about her drawing skills was revealed but instead of firing her, Howard Greer thought the incident was amusing and started teaching her how to draw. Edith Head designed costumes for many years at Paramount using the language of fashion to express her creativity, to develop personalities, and to enchant movie audiences.
The fascination with fashion, costume and transformation will continue to go on. Designers for film such as Colleen Atwood, Milena Canonero, and Jean Paul Gaultier will hopefully keep designing costumes that will magically advance film narrative and enhance character development. Today, audiences will continue to be entranced by the on-screen and off-screen transformation of entertainers like Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Victoria Beckham, Cate Blanchet, Drew Barrymore, Meryl Streep, and the starlet of the moment: Megan Fox.
What will they do next? Where will the inspiration come from? Which well known or obscure designer will collaborate? Which fashion trend will be spread next thanks to this movie star? How much work and discipline will it take to control and create an image? It will be interesting to see the contribution of costume design to the world of fashion, and how women’s dress and the standards of beauty keep evolving.
