Taking away Azula’s bending would not help her at all

I’ve seen some people say that taking away Azula’s bending is the only way that she can integrate back into society and have a shot at having a happy life because she is too dangerous with it. I disagree with that very much. Taking away her firebending would be absolutely devastating to her and would probably make her vengeful. It would just be so cruel to do that to her. In order to heal, Azula needs to be shown kindness not cruelty. And it’s not like Azula is useless without firebending either. She can still fight very well without it. And firebending is one of the things that makes her most happy. It’s part of who she is. If Azula is fully healed and rehabilitated she would not be hurting people with her firebending. Azula can be helped just fine while she still has her firebending. So yes, let Azula keep her firebending!

SSO OC intro: Niamh Polarbear

i got a really good response on my last sso oc drawings which is amazing? thank you guys so much njdfjgm

so here's a bit more of a formal introduction for niamh.

so. niamh polarbear. my main sso oc.

she's the main pov character of the storyline/narrative that i have in my head for her and the honestly extremely expansive cast of sso ocs? i've kinda considered that i might start posting that on here in comic form or somesuch cos i love my sso ocs and i wanna share their story with people

that being said that probably won't happen until like next month at the earliest because i am a busy little guy!

niamh actually only exists because i realized one day that you could have an sso account with the last name polarbear and everything kind of spiraled from there? i didn't start making friends for her or a storyline around them until very recently.

niamh is not a soul rider and the soul riders from canon actually don't exist in her universe at all. basically almost all of the npcs from in-game canon either don't exist in niamh's universe or have somehow been removed from the storyline (if they were relevant in the first place).

so, for example, the cloudmill family (and potentially alex as well) still exist, but alex isn't the lightning circle soul rider.

there actually isn't one at all right now, actually. niamh is older than the soul riders by a good amount. so the start of her narrative is in between soul rider generations, like, think a couple of years before lisa moves to jorvik type thing.

niamh grew up on a farm in ireland, but her dad was jorvegian and she grew up hearing a lot about jorvik. she always related to jorvegian folklore a lot.

so at age 18 she moved to jorvik to study jorvegian and kallter folklore, do archeology and study the valley of the hidden dinosaur. dino valley wildlife, the kallstones, all that jazz. and while she was there, she met snowglobe (and geimhreadh, but that came later) and got roped up into all this keepers of aideen + fighting garnok stuff.

but while she's friendly with the keepers and works with them, now she's kind of a rhiannon character. she doesn't live in valedale or work for the keepers, she just does her own thing (she's living in dino valley now) but the keepers call on her for help a lot.

she is very moon circle overall, she's very quiet and selfless and while she's a big softie inside she seems extremely intimidating to those that meet her because. she is tall buff and stoic. niamh is living proof that just because you're nerd doesn't mean you can't be built like a brick shithouse

anyway that's all i'm gonna share about her for now. this is already a very long post BUT i love my ocs a lot and i might drop introductions like this about some of niamh's other friends as well or, like i mentioned, i might start posting the Niamh Story on tumblr once i have the time

talia,

otherwise known as the daughter of the demon, is the daughter of batman’s long-time immortal foe, ra’s al ghul. she was introduced in detective comics #411 by dennis o’neil, where she candidly unmasked batman to tend to his wounds after they were captured by doctor darrk. the relationship that developed between them in the following decades was complicated, with talia caught between her love for bruce and her loyalty to ra’s. over time, she forged an identity for herself that rendered her one of the most nuanced members of the batman mythos until her character re-vamp by grant morrison in batman & son.

this list covers a comprehensive, chronological, in-continuity timeline of her character prior to its assassination. elseworld’s titles have been ignored, as have other media such as shows, films, video games, etc. the goal of this list is to give a cohesive account of talia’s pre-morrison character arc. not every single appearance is included here due to instances of mischaracterization (see the end of this post), but this nonetheless covers almost all of the bases.

dc special series #15 — there’s some racist writing, namely of ra’s drugging bruce and wedding him to talia under preconceived notions regarding marriage in eastern cultures, but the marriage is rendered moot within the issue and treated as a one-note plot point.

batman #330-35 — wolfman’s characterization of talia is slightly malicious here, likely due to him beginning to create a rift between dick and bruce that would be emphasized upon in the new teen titans. i personally don’t enjoy this arc anymore and am merely including it for purposes of understanding the rest of her continuity prior to crisis on infinite earths. there are also newer editions of the arc where talia’s facial expressions are redrawn to not make her look like as much of an evil, conniving arab.

red hood: lost days — i think this fits here narratively with talia’s arc, in addition to it beginning a little while before tim becomes robin. talia’s loneliness following the loss of damian and bruce would give her perfect reason to reach out to and raise jason. i have some serious disagreements with winick’s characterization of her as a whole, and i seriously dislike the entire comic now, esp the last issue, which i ignore completely, but under the helm of a better writer the premise of talia raising jason for a while after his resurrection would genuinely have been interesting.

ultimately, talia is a compassionate person, caught between loyalty to her father and love for bruce until she decides to forsake both of them and chart her own path. where the fine balance lies for her between ra’s and bruce is that a) she also has ideals and visions for a better world, but she’s not nearly as delusional or self-serving about them as ra’s, and b) she’s a little more willing to dip her toes into some dirty work for an overall beneficial, humanitarian end goal than bruce is, as seen by her lexcorp stint.

how talia is portrayed since damian’s conception obliterates the gray area that originally made her into such a compelling character. realistically, talia would never be a super villain. she’s not remotely interested, and she only stuck with ra’s for so long bc she felt obligated to and he could be incredibly controlling. she didn’t have anyone else to reach out to for a long time, esp considering bruce’s emotional unreliability. at her core, she’s compassionate, kind, and a humanitarian, and her defining ideology is to act for love. how she’s shown to raise damian makes little sense when put up against her original characterization, bc she’d never been interested in fostering a new world conqueror, and the way ra’s used her as an “instrument of death” was something she hated and would never inflict upon her own child.

many comics after damian’s intro show talia and bruce to have a very antagonistic, bickering dynamic, which i don’t think fits them at all. talia melts around bruce; her guard comes down, and it’s what allows him to break her heart over and over again when he rejects her because he prioritizes the mantle of batman over the idea of a relationship with her. part of the reason she separates herself not only from ra’s but bruce, too, after tower of babel is bc she knows that whenever she’s around bruce, she reverts a bit to the lovesick girl she used to be when she first met him, and she’s tired of that! she loves him, she always will, and she’ll help him where she can (as seen through her lexcorp stint), but she also values her independence and her heart, and she’ll separate herself from him when needed. talia would also never scorn bruce for refusing to kill. prior to her character assassination, she had only killed twice: a) in her introductory issue to protect bruce, rendering her incredibly upset bc it was her first kill ever, and b) in batman: son of the demon, when she killed one of qayin’s assassins to protect bruce again.

events/titles left out due to mischaracterization 🗡️

batman: birth of the demon — mostly, it’s long-winded and boring. it was also written by o’neil when talia had progressed far past what he originally envisioned for her, so some of her characterizations are odd and hard to place chronologically. it’s possible it was a way for him to get back at what had been made of her through batman: son of the demon, as mike w. barr says he heard o’neil was unhappy with the comic and he and his immediate supervisors were allegedly threatened with being fired if they kept the child in continuity. this comic was, however, responsible for introducing talia’s chinese heritage through her mother’s side (as well as her father’s, though the exploration of his heritage was incredibly orientalist and conflated several eastern cultures irrespective to their actual history), and it retconned the way her mother died in batman: son of the demon.

azrael #5-7, 9, 29-30 — these are also issues written by o’neil when talia had progressed far past what he originally envisioned for her. personally speaking, i don’t think talia would be the type of person to throw herself at just any willing suitor. bruce was special and it was the freedom and righteousness he represented that always drew her to him, not any inclination towards him being a perfect specimen. the latter reasoning was more characteristic of ra’s in his attempts to find her a husband.

batman: bane of the demon, batman: legacy, batman: the demon laughs, and birds of prey #31-35 — the chuck dixon era. this man had a really weird insistence upon turning talia into an overly aggressive, conniving sex fiend, and i think it would be safe to say he never bothered reading a talia comic prior to writing her into his stories. 

batman: hush — bruce’s assessment of talia is oddly scornful and cold here, and that’s not to say that he hasn’t been before, but it just doesn’t rly match up with what was going on with the two of them in comics at the time (batman: our worlds at war, gotham knights #20). while there were occasions he’d rejected her prior, it was always bc of her ties to her father or bc of his own duty, never bc of any doubts he had in her. talia was also weirdly zapped of her assassin’s skill set here and put in selina’s protective care, which doesn’t really make sense, even if she did save selina in the end.

death and the maidens — talia’s complicated history with bruce does give her plenty of reasons to feel hurt by him and guarded against him despite her love for him, but this is without being additionally manipulated. this arc reads as much like a useless character assassination story to me as did the killing joke for barbara. talia has no agency within the story, rather she’s doused repeatedly in trauma porn so she can “hate” bruce and be permanently manipulated into villainy. morrison is blamed a lot for talia’s downfall, but imo this comic actually marked the beginning of batman editorial turning its back on her, esp considering rucka had written far better stories for talia prior. pretty much everything published from here on out i decided not to include in this list.

if you made it all the way here to the end, congrats! i hope you’ve come away from this post with a greater understanding of who talia really is. comics in the past fifteen years have done her a huge disservice, and i think there is this idea that morrison’s version of her character can be salvaged so long as the rape detail from damian’s origins is removed, but that isn’t really true. the talia who existed from 1971-2004 is an entirely different character from whatever rucka and morrison rendered her into. although talia can definitely throw down when she needs to and often will for the greater good, at heart she’s a compassionate character who desires peace and freedom more than anything else. until writers are willing to acknowledge that, it’s not likely her character at present will ever be close to what it was prior, but the least we can do as readers is be cognizant of how racism has contributed to her character assassination. please feel free to send me questions if you have any!

proud of you: an EJ Caswell x oc fic (sneak peek)

here is a little sneak peek of something I've been working on. just a little story in which EJ gets the love, support, and friend that he deserves. it's taking place pre-1 month later, right after camp.

this is just a sneak peek, there is an extended version of this scene and I have sooo many ideas for this story so please let me know if you like it and want to read more/what you think!

I see him before he sees me. He's walking in my direction with his head low, looking towards the ground and he doesn't seem to know or care where he's going. He looks sad and deflated and worn out. I don't think I've ever seen him look so unsure of himself and just so...miserable. Especially not after camp. I stand there like an idiot for so long trying to figure out what to say that he's the one who breaks the silence first.

"Ellie?" EJ looks up, his expression transforming into one of shock as his eyes fall on me. "Are you really here or am I dreaming?"

"Hi EJ," I smile at him, "I'm really here. I'd be happy to pinch you if you need me to."

"Oh no, that's not necessary," He says, and a smile breaks across his face but doesn't quite reach his eyes. Then he looks at me again, smiling wider. "Oh my gosh, Ellie...it's so good to see you." And the next thing I know, he's engulfing me in a big hug, and we're both laughing as he lifts me up and spins me around before setting me back down. I can't help noticing that his arms are strong and muscular, and he smells good, like cologne. I don't remember him ever wearing cologne before. "And who's this? You finally got the dog you always wanted?" He bends over to greet Darby, petting her head and scratching behind her ears. Darby excitedly leans into his hand, loving the attention, and EJ has the closest I've seen to a real smile on his face as he coos to her. "Hi puppy...you're a good girl."

"Yeah, she was kind of a bribe. My parents basically said 'you can't live in Salt Lake like you want to, so have this dog instead' and called it a compromise," I explain, rolling my eyes. "First promise you won't laugh when I tell you her name."

"I promise I will not laugh," EJ says, with a glimmer of a smirk, like he's already trying not to laugh, "okay, okay, I might laugh a little. But never at you."

"Okay," I take a deep breath and grin at him as he waits expectantly, "I call her Darby, but her name is really Ms Darbus. Like the theater teacher in High School Musical. You know how much I loved those movies when we were little, and they've always been my comfort movies."

"Oh, I know who Ms Darbus is," He says with poorly suppressed laughter, "you were obsessed. We watched them so many times I have the entire trilogy committed to memory. I'm pretty sure you made me do the sing-along so many times I know the songs better than Zac Efron."

"Don't act like you didn't enjoy it too," I giggle, bumping his shoulder with mine. "Zac Efron who? You're the only Troy for me."

"That actually means a lot, Ellie," EJ smiles, but it's sort of a sad smile, and I'm confused. "You're the only Gabriella for me, too."

"So, how was camp?" I ask, smiling at him. I'm a little surprised that he hasn't brought it up himself yet, I had thought he wouldn't be able to shut up about it he'd be so excited to tell me. Besides the obvious fact that he directed an amazing musical and how huge a deal it is that he's going to be on Disney plus, it's just his personality to be overly excited about camp and theater, and about anything he does in general.

His playfulness from moments earlier fades away, and he takes a long time to answer. "It's...a long story."

"Well, I have at least a year, so, no rush," I joke lightly, and then I smile up at him, "I watched your directorial debut on Disney+ and oh my gosh, it was amazing. I think I actually liked it better than the version I saw on Broadway last year, and you really expect me to believe that was the first show you've ever directed? You're really talented. I'm so proud of you, EJ."

He just stands there, looking at me with disbelief and swirling emotions in his eyes. He looks like he's on the verge of tears, and it makes me feel sad too.

"Are you okay, E? Did I say something wrong, or...?" I put my hand on his shoulder in what I hope is a comforting gesture.

"No, no, you're-you're fine, it's just...you're the first person who has said that. That-that you're proud of me." He barely manages to choke out the words, and his voice cracks on the last word. I move closer and pull him into a hug, and he squeezes me tight against his chest, his head resting on my shoulder. I hold him like that in silence for a long time. There are some moments that don't need words to be said. And when the right person is there with you, a million understandings and words are being felt without any being said.

Thinking about how every single one of the Homestuck kids (assumedly) grew up pretty isolated from other people, and so their social interaction skills aren't developed at all.

Like over the internet? They're fine! They're great at that! But in person? It. Does not go well

The last remnants of humanity are a bunch of awkward teenagers who don't know how to have face to face interactions and I think that's beautiful

The sun was setting, kissing the world gold and pink and purple; kissing unexpected tears on warm skin and smiles and trembling hands – real tears and smiles and hands – brightening everything just so. It was too much and not enough all at once, how the entire universe felt whole once again.
