It was a chilly night, though not untypical for the early fall weather. A handful of street lamps were casting their dim light on the narrow sidewalks, while most had long stopped working, as if whoever was responsible for them had given up on fixing them.

Aside from a handful of convenience stores and the occasional lively bar, all the windows in the area were dark as well. After all, few places remained open for so long.

This applied for the small cafe at the corner of the street too. Due to an unexpected visit by some special customers (the manager had offered them their help, whenever they would struggle finding food by themselves), its working hours had run a little late tonight.

Fortunately, it was already a Friday anyway, and the single student employee that had stayed behind to help his boss had no classes to attend the next day. He was even making up for his tardy childhood friend who, despite promising to come in and help out today, hadn’t shown up all evening. Though it was already passing 9PM, the two were finally almost finished with the clean-up after the long day.

They were so ready to go home.

That was until a wild banging on the door echoed throughout the cafe.

The two exchanged suspicious looks, but the manager moved in to open. His eyes went wide when he found a bruised and scraped up Bakugo panting at the doorway.

Not to mention the unconscious bleeding girl in his arms…

Midoriya let out a deep sigh, as he walked into the lounge room, plopping down on a chair and massaging his temple. He had not anticipated the day ending with him having to take care of a wounded human in the middle of the night. At least he was finally putting that first year of med school to use. He couldn’t help but wonder what the other two would have done, had he not volunteered to stay after closing tonight.

Speaking of the other two, he finally opened his eyes to find them looking at him expectedly. He shrugged, clearing his throat.

“She’ll live. Kacchan brought her just in time, since she had lost a lot of blood. Thank god we had some stored in here, since I kinda doubt that’s common for other cafes.” He shifted in his seat, and took to looking somewhere to the side. Gosh, he was tired. “By some miracle, whoever attacked her missed any tricky spots. So I’m guessing she will make a quick recovery, though it’s going to leave a nasty scar. That’s about it, to be honest. But...”

His eyes moved to Bakugo, who seemed to stiffen in response. He wasn’t acting like his usual self and Midoriya was a little concerned.

“Correct me if I’m wrong, Kacchan but… that wound – it was inflicted by a ghoul, wasn’t it? With how clean it was, it probably wasn’t your ukaku either. Not to mention how you suspiciously didn’t show up today, despite promising Aizawa-san you would. What… happened?”

The third man in the room cleared his throat, reminding the others of his presence.

“What Midoriya just said. I’m not sure if you really understand this but you brought a human here. You saved her life too. I don’t plan to discuss whether this was the right choice or not but the fact is, it’s not the kind of choice you would make, Bakugo.” Aizawa crossed his arms and waited.

Bakugo meanwhile let out a small ‘tch’ and looked to the side.

“Who cares? I know her from some classes at school. Some sloppy binge-eater transferred and asked her out on a date or whatever. I don’t know, the guy just got on my nerves all the time. What does it matter, I kicked his ass and he ran away with his tail between his legs. He just so happened to be attacking her. I didn’t mean to save anybody.”

“Keep telling yourself that,” Aizawa muttered and sighed when Bakugo shot him a glare. “That still doesn’t answer our first question – why did you bring her here? What were you thinking? You could’ve just left her there, you know? Someone would have called an ambulance sooner or later.”

Both pairs of eyes were now locked onto Bakugo, as if piercing numerous holes in his already shaky reasoning. He opened his mouth to answer but his words got caught in his throat. Or rather, he had nothing to say in the first place. He was still trying to figure out that answer himself. Instead, he growled as he pushed himself off the wall he was leaning against.

“I told you – who cares!? I brought her here – what of it, dammit!?” With that, he stormed off, slamming the door behind him.

Though their gazes remained locked where Bakugo had just been standing, Midoriya and Aizawa came to the silent agreement not to push it any further. For now.

Though it was a slow process, you were becoming vaguely aware of your consciousness. One by one, your senses were returning to you.

The smell of freshly-washed sheets, the muffled sound of voices and the faint ringing in your ears. You couldn’t quite see anything yet, as you were still too tired to force your eyes open. The pillow you had drowsed off on was soft and all you wanted right now was to snuggle yourself against it.

When you made a small move to readjust one of your arms that was going numb due to your odd sleeping position, a sharp pain coursed through your shoulder, spreading to the rest of your arm, effectively numbing it further. You winced at the sudden feeling.

What was this all about?

The pain, which still had yet to fully subside, had awoken you completely, and you opened your eyes to try and figure out what was wrong with your shoulder.

You quickly forgot about that when you noticed you were on an unfamiliar bed in an unfamiliar room.

You furrowed your brows, trying to adjust to the sudden light hitting your eyes and just as you glanced at the door, a head of curly green hair seemed to peak in. The freckled boy noticed you were now awake and jumped.

“Kacchan – she’s- she’s up!” he called out, before disappearing somewhere beyond the door.

Your heart sank. You’d never seen this person in your life. And this Kacchan he was speaking of? Surely you would have remembered if you’d met someone with a peculiar name like that.

You were most certainly not at home. And you feared something bad had happened to you.

Gritting your teeth through the rest of the pain, you somehow pushed yourself to sit up in the bed, only now realizing your right shoulder was neatly bandaged. You also noticed some more band-aids all across your body, as if you had been in a brutal fight and had been covered in cuts and bruises.

Though that certainly would have explained your awful backache and how heavy your head felt.

But knowing yourself, you would have never gotten in a fight in the first place. Nor would you have let yourself get so drunk so as to forget what could have happened to leave you in such a sorry state.

What was I even doing all day today…?

Let’s see, I had my morning classes. Then I went straight home to… uh… Ah, that’s right – I had a date with Monoma-kun tonight! So I went out, ran into Bakugo-kun, met up with Monoma-kun after which…

After which I…

You grasped a hand over your mouth. Your eyes seemed to water at just the thought.

It all came flooding back in a matter of seconds. All the images and all the terror.

You had… almost gotten yourself killed.

No, not just killed – eaten. Monoma had been the binge-eater you had been hearing about on TV in the recent weeks, and you had been chosen as his next victim.

Your breathing quickened, as the air in your lungs wasn’t nearly enough anymore. You became increasingly aware of the pain in your shoulder and your head was already spinning.

You were hyperventilating.

The boy who’d peeked in the room a minute or so earlier, returned just in time to bring you back to earth. Upon noticing your shaking form, he’d dropped the towels he’d been carrying and had rushed over to your side, hesitantly placing a hand on your back.

“Hey, hey, [L/N]-san, please calm down. Everything is okay, you’re safe now. Safe, okay? I’m here to help you, please don’t worry...” he spoke gently, rubbing circles in your back. Before long, he had helped you steady your breathing once again, stepping back from you with a relieved sigh. “See? I told you – there’s no reason to worry!” he smiled as he went to retrieve the towels he had dropped at the door.

He started folding them again, only to realize he would need new ones anyway, and discarded them on the sofa instead.

“Where… am I?” you muttered weakly, still a bit afraid to hear the answer. What if you had gotten kidnapped? If you were being held captive!? All the bad options were running through your head.

“Yuuei. I thought I told you that already.” Another person appeared at the door. You jumped at the unexpected voice but this time you easily recognized its owner.

Bakugo Katsuki. The ghoul who had…

You gasped. Your first instinct was to crawl back and as far away from him as you could, though your back had hit the wall before you could get very far. You cursed whoever had placed this bed beside it.

Bakugo looked shocked at your immediate fear and his crossed arms fell by his sides. Had that… hurt him?

A new memory surfaced in your mind, and with it, your eyes lit up with recognition once again.

“You… you saved me?” Though it was a question, Bakugo neither confirmed, nor denied it. Instead he only walked into the room and lazily threw himself onto the couch, besides Midoriya’s now useless towels. You decided to take that as a ‘yes’. But then… “Why…?”

He snapped.

“Why is everybody asking me this goddamn question today!?” he raised his voice and you flinched. Bakugo however noticed this, and lowered his voice. “It doesn’t matter – what’s done is done. If anything, you should be thanking me.”

“She might not be thanking you for long though.” A new pair of footsteps entered the room.

Jeez, your head hurt enough already. You weren’t sure how many more unfamiliar faces you could deal with tonight. The man who had just entered had unruly black hair and impressive bags under his equally as tired eyes. He did however seem to speak with a sense of authority, despite the monotonous tone of his voice.

“My name is Aizawa Shota. I’m the manager of this place. That right there,” he motioned towards the green-head who had taken a seat in the chair beside your bed. “Is Midoriya. He and Bakugo work here. And now, the less fun part.”

Midoriya looked down, as if already knowing what his manager was going to say. Bakugo on the other hand, insisted on staring off somewhere into the distance.

“Since Bakugo has slipped up and let out his little secret, it wouldn’t take a genius to take that to its logical conclusion, considering that the two of us are helping him right now. Naturally, this means you’ve been let in on a few touchy subjects you should probably be killed for.”

You paled. Was… was this guy for real…? He didn’t even give the tears enough time to form in the corners of your eyes, before he continued.

“However, Bakugo here seems awfully insistent on letting you live for whatever reason.” Your gaze briefly wondered to him, though he caught you staring and frowned. All the while, you were slowly putting all the pieces of the puzzle together.

“So you… you two are also ghouls, like Bakugo-kun...” You looked to Midoriya, who nodded hesitantly. “And this… this ‘Yuuei’ place is a cafe run by ghouls, for ghouls…? Is that right?”

“We serve humans too, of course,” Aizawa corrected, while you nodded.

“So, I, a human, now know all about this… After being saved by you nonetheless.” You looked down at your lap. You weren’t sure if you felt bad for having those three help you so selflessly, or whether you were afraid this Aizawa person was going to ignore Bakugo and have you killed regardless.

“A lot of effort was put into keeping you alive these past few hours, between Bakugo rescuing you and Midoriya treating your wounds. It would be a waste to throw it all away.” Your eyes widened. “But you have to realize that your only choice now is to take this secret to your grave.”

Aizawa turned away and walked towards the door, only to stop right before opening it.

“Of course, if you think that will be too much for you, you could save us the trouble of having to hunt you down later and just let us know right away. We’ll make it quick for you.”

For the next few seconds the only sound in the room was that of the door creaking open (they really had to fix it, huh?), while you thought.

The choice was obvious – you were not about to get yourself killed right after being saved. It’s almost as if you had just been given a second chance and you did not intend to blow it. Because here was the thing about second chances – they didn’t come around all that often.

All of Monoma’s previous victims? They hadn’t been given a second chance. No, they had been mercilessly slaughtered right there and then.

Why were you of all people different then? Why did you get to alive? You weren’t sure. But… but you wanted to find out. To give your second chance at life a purpose and a meaning.

“I...” you spoke before Aizawa could fully close the door behind him. As such, he stopped to listen. You mentally slapped yourself when you realized you hadn’t thought how to continue. So you did the same thing you had done when you had put the clues together to discover what Monoma was – run your mouth without thinking. Because that had ended well for you last time.

“I really am grateful for everything you have done for me.” You bowed your head. “In fact, I feel like I have to repay you somehow. Ghouls or not, you saved my life and I will forever owe you for this. If… if there is a way...” You lifted up your head and returned a confident look at Aizawa. “If there is anything that I can do for you, please let me know right away.”

No one dared to utter another word.

Until Midoriya broke the silence, that is.

“E-eeeeh!?”

An hour later, an agreement had been made.

Aizawa had offhandedly mentioned that they needed a new waitress anyway, leaving the three kids in a stunned silence, as he shut the door in their faces.

Bakugo had been instructed to stay with the girl until she fell asleep again, just to make sure she was not reopening her wounds. Midoriya had promised to stay overnight as well, in case further complications were to arise.

He had taken to cleaning up the room where they had first treated [F/N], as it had been left a mess of medical tools, bloody bandages, and even a few stains on the floor. One could’ve even thought it looked a little like a murder scene. Good thing they had moved [F/N] to a cleaner, less traumatic-looking room.

That’s when his manager had walked in.

“Midoriya?”

“Y-yes, sir?”

“What is it? You seemed to have a question on your mind earlier.” He must have been referring to how shocked he’d looked when Aizawa had announced that he did not plan on getting rid of [F/N] quite yet. Midoriya nodded and spoke, as he returned to sweeping the floor

“Well, uh… How do I put this… It’s not that I’m disagreeing with your decision, sir. I was just surprised – this is the first time we’ve ever let a human know about Yuuei, let alone join us here. And umm, this one might be a little strange but...” Midoriya recalled when Bakugo had first brought [F/N] to them. There had been something very peculiar about the girl. “She has this… weird scent. I’ve never met a human like this before. Though it’s not that of a ghoul either. It’s just… odd?”

“Right. I forgot you and Bakugo had a keener sense of smell. I didn’t really notice anything but I will take your word for it. I’ll have to ask Bakugo about it later too.” Aizawa seemed to consider for a second. “For now, you should call him in the morning. Explain the situation and let’s see what he has to say about this. If he decides it’s fine, we’ll have her stay with us. And if not...” His eyes darkened.

“Let’s… let’s hope it doesn’t come to that… I’m sure he wouldn’t mind – he’s always been so open-minded when it came to humans. Then again, if I were him, I’d surely feel the same.”

Throwing the last of the bloody bandages into the trash, Midoriya finally straightened up, looking off into the distance with a hopeful smile.

“Plus, Kacchan seems to trust her. And if I have learned anything in the years that I’ve known him, it’s that his judgment's always on the mark.”

It had been a long day, a long evening, which had then stretched into a long night. For you, for Bakugo, for Yuuei’s Midoriya and Aizawa too.

But it was the beginning of an even longer story. The story of how you found yourself surrounded by those you had been taught to fear all your life and accepted as a part of their second home.

This was the story of how you – [L/N] [F/N], first met the ghouls that would forever change your life.

Author’s Note: And here we get into the new stuff. As you might have noticed, I decided to replace the original “Anteiku” with “Yuuei”, since I thought it would be fitting. I personally prefer the spelling UA but this just works, you know?

We got to meet Aizawa and Midoriya this week, and we’ll certainly encounter a handful of other characters next week! Fair warning – not everyone from the original BNHA cast is here, but a handful of them will show up! Hope you’re looking forward to it!

Comfort Zones & The Age Old Question

There are many things I imagined about how my college experience would go. I would study in the library with my friends, have a cute dorm room, go on crazy adventures that I'd tell my future kids about. What I never pictured were the nights of doubt and tears, breaking down in the middle of the day at a picture of my family and the feeling of emptiness that follows like a shadow, waiting for the next chance you're by yourself to truly strike. I would associate my current mental state with that of early 2020 pandemic quarantine. Yeah, so not the best.

I really enjoy my classes, I find them really interesting and I can't wait to devel more into the subject. I was also fortunate enough to have one of my high school friends right beside me for every step. Even my roommates, though strong personalities are okay. Something that I can't get over though is the environment I am in.

I find myself wondering why I choose this school. I was writing the pros and cons of this school the other day and found myself asking the age-old question, why am I here? Not Earth, but this school. What about this school made me choose it? It certainly wasn't its academic program, because where my classes are interesting, it's not a quality of education I can't get anywhere else. It's not the surrounding town which is as bare as a baby's bottom. It's definitely not for the smell that comes in daily that I kid you not is literal cow shit (this town is surrounded by cow fields and cow fields).

I can't really explain why I choose this school. Maybe because it was the only one that accepted me by the morning that I randomly awoke and decided I would select my college. Whatever it was, I can clearly say, I will not be returning for next semester.

But what about right now? How do I decide if I want to continue somewhere that I've already given a deadline to? I am really struggling with this decision, of toughing it out for a semester, hoping that it gets better, or giving in to the needs of my mental health and dropping out this semester to attend the university my family attended with the same educational benefits but close to my comfort zone. Normally, I would say to give it at least a month to truly see, were it not for the drop deadline just two days away.

As you guys know, I have never had it easy when it comes to deadlines.

On one hand, I'm already here. I already have a routine (ish) and I have had a job since I transferred to a new store over here. I have my spot where I sit each class and the select people I talk to. I have established myself (physically at least) here.

On the other hand, my mental health is declining, and staying would be a gamble if it gets better or not. It truly is not alright that I feel like crying at every second or that I feel like I'm on the brink of not okay. If I returned home, I could work at my old job who already said they'd take me back whenever. I would be able to apply for either online classes in the same subjects I'm taking now or hope there are openings in the local university that my dad teaches at and almost all my sisters went/are going to.

I know people encourage breaking out of your comfort zone, but at what point have you gone too far?

I don't mean to dump this on you guys, I'm just trying to work this out. And maybe, a part of me hopes that someone will see this and help me, tell me what to do. Or maybe, that I'll inspire someone to seek their own truth. Cause just like choosing a university, this decision is ultimately my own. I have to walk my own path and though I can ask for guidance, at the end of the day it is me who walks it.

For now, my answer is to sleep on it. It's a lot to think about. I have decided to visit my family after my shift at work tomorrow, and hopefully, they can give me that guidance. I have to walk this path, but do I have to be miserable about it?

Back in December, I wrote a post on facebook to try to reflect everything that I do at my job, and I’m reposting it here with some current updates because I still think about this sometimes. Putting it under a cut for length. I’m including a few edits to reflect changes that happened between when I first wrote it and now.

I was joking how if I wanted to update my resume to reflect everything I actually do at work, I would need a whole separate page just for Target. Tonight (Dec 9th 2016), I sat down and actually made an extensive list of everything that I do just to see how much it actually is, and this is what I came up with. Obligatory disclaimer: opinions are my own, yadda yadda. Don't necessarily mistake this post for complaining. Obviously it's not always a fun job, but there are a lot of aspects to these things that I enjoy doing.

DAILY TASKS Refunds: use receipt, use debit or credit card, gift card lookup, registry lookup, (rarely) check lookup, no-receipt returns with photo ID. Ranges from just a couple seconds to several minutes depending on how many items, if it's a same day return, if receipt lookup is working correctly, if it's a legit return (I lost count of how many times I've had to explain and re-explain to people committing return fraud what our return policy is, why they don't get cash back, etc).

Fraudulent refunds: Good fucking god. Basically almost the same as above except you see the same patterns of merchandise over and over, and you can never anticipate how they’ll react if the computer rejects their ID.

Exchanges: One of the easiest tasks, unless a different brand/price point is selected for exchange.

Backup cashier: Guests often sent to the desk when front lanes are occupied. Ranges between just a minute to several long transactions due to amount of items and the finite amount of desk space. Only one bag set per register, and one register doesn't even have bags. See also: guests asking if they could be rung up at the desk, or TM offering to ring guest up if things are slow.

Defectives: Process and sort defectives correctly. This regularly involves chemical items, broken glass, leaking food items, dumping alcohol (21+ only), getting everything bagged/repackaged/taped together enough and sorted into correct bins for shipment. Inspecting food merchandise to see if it's able to be donated. Bagging and sealing all chemical products. Applying labels to everything. Sorting everything onto the correct pallets at the end of the shift: defective salvage on one, CRC (usually high-end electronics, baby formula, certain clothing brands) sorted onto another. The CRC list must be checkmarked to make sure every item on the list is present and accounted for. Sort all the defective vendor items into their correct locations so vendors could bring them back. Putting defective merchandise on the pallets requires an LOD to come unlock the pallets in the first place, which pulls them from their own large task list.

Equipment tracking: keep equipment cabinet locked, unlock it/hand over keys for TMs needing walkie talkies and other things, make sure all equipment is signed out and signed back in, double-check to make sure everything is put on chargers correctly so no batteries run low, retrieve keys from the keybox for TMs April 2017: We kind of stopped doing this and the desk keys broke a while back. Replacements still haven’t arrived. We have to call the boss now to get the keybox open.

Sorting: putting out of area items back in the correct carts bins so sales floor TMs could retrieve it later, create overflow carts when the actual ones become too full, inform sales floor when carts are full, sort reshop carts from front lanes and from sales floor TMs who are about to hit compliance or go clock out, gathering all the crap that's left in reshop carts that shouldn't be there and putting it somewhere--fixtures (that belong all the way in the back, in the fixture room and not at the service desk), old sale signs (trash), actual trash, water bottles/cups, essentially stuff that should be done by the TM that brought it up in the first place but don't (2017: Some changes to this process occurred and it was made much worse than it was)

Correcting common mistakes: price challenges, price adjustments, missed cartwheel (either void the payment and apply cartwheel all at once, or manually enter it in one by one as price adjustments), missed gift receipts including those from gift registries

Guest assistance: Looking items up, giving directions through the store, calling other stores to check on inventory of items, answering questions, listening to complaints--this one ranges from sincere, actual concerns to the bizarre ("This place was a lot better off when it was just an empty lot for the plant farm!" "...Well okay sir, I guess that's that then."), more intensive emotional labor such as dealing with hostile guests, de-escalating situations so guests don't get angrier, keeping eyes on suspicious guests, working with AP when something fishy is happening, teaching guests how to use the motorized carts, signing guests up for redcards, helping guests call the redcard hotline when something's wrong with their card, calling target.com when they fuck something up with a guest's order (happens way more often than you think, and in more interesting and creative ways each time!!), honestly there is probably even more but that's what I got just off the top of my head

Communication: calling TMs on sales floor to find items, bring items, backup calls (if they are guest service trained), describing items, basically any kind of communication skill could be listed here

Order pickup: find guests' order by last name on the order list. Find guest's order by middle name on the list if their last name is not present. Look under "G" for "guest" if their name isn't on the list at all. Find order by order number if their name is not on the list. Find item in hold location (lately, like this holiday season, someone has been scanning items into one hold location and putting it in an entirely different one, so that adds to the fun!) and retrieve it or call for someone to retrieve it if it's in the back, process payment, curse the gods when the guest wants to return it that same day because the receipt information doesn't update for 24 hours after the order processes... APRIL 2017: We now have to keep the order sticker and put it in our brand new log book, including the date and time at which the payment for the order was processed, because other stores keep forgetting to train their GSTMs to push the fucking payment button.

Redcard: "And are you saving 5% with your Target Redcard? Do you want to sign up? It's 5% off nearly everything in the store and at target.com, plus free standard shipping year round and an extra 30 days on your returns. Credit or debit? Do you have a check? Do you know your account number and routing number? Gross annual income means what you make yearly" and so forth. plus, take payments for credit redcards, tell people we can't look up their credit balances, etc

APRIL 2017Sales report: Pull up how much we are making per hour in sales, compare it to the projection in what we should be making in sales, and announce it every single hour on the walkie so the LOD knows. Fake some enthusiasm for the redcard if you can.

APRIL 2017 Greeting guests: The latest direction that corporation wants to take the service desk in is creating a “hotel lobby” experience for guests when they enter the store. What this means is that they took away the method we used for processing reshop to make the desk area more sterile, and service desk TMs are expected to stand at the front of the store with the weekly ad and greet guests as soon as they walk in to try to upsell the sales, redcard, cartwheel, etc. This was implemented probably a couple months ago and I tried to do it once. It’s literally the most useless idea I’ve ever heard, because actual hotel lobby employees don’t harass you as soon as you come inside, and also because I could instead be doing one of the million other things on this list.

NEAR-DAILY/REGULARLY EXPECTED TASKS/THINGS THAT SHOULD BE DAILY Paid and left merchandise: document date+location, log it in the paid and left log including date/time/location/item description/amount that items ring up as. Defect out perishable food items. Ring out paid and left total to guests who bring receipt back for lost items.

Lost and found: log valuable items and money in lost and found log. Keep track of lost items (valuables in the locked drawer, common articles in the bin)

Bullseye's Playground: sort reshop for BP, put it away in either the correct spot or in the same price point with similar items. If it's especially slow, zone it and make it look pretty. This task becomes impossible to finish during the holiday season.

RFID: Retag clothes and domestics items that are missing barcodes and encode with RFID labels. This involves one mydevice, rolls of the correct labels (stick A is for domestics, sticker B is for clothes, and sticker C is if either label won't fit on the product tag), and one Zebra scanner. Turn bluetooth on, try to get the mydevice and zebra to read each other, turn all equipment back off and on again until bluetooth works, scan UPC, scan RFID sticker, apply sticker. If RFID sticker doesn't encode, it's gotta be tossed. These rolls are about $250 a roll and once I went through six stickers in a row before I got one to finally scan correctly. It's a gamble, but this can be done quickly if all the equipment is working correctly.

Phones: be the phone operator for a few minutes! Answer the same questions over and over, transfer calls to the right department, park calls on the hold line (for some reason I often have calls drop entirely when I try to park from the guest service phone?), do all this while trying to do any number of the previous tasks above. Multitasking! Don't you wish you had more than two arms? First time I was phone operator while the fitting room was on break was with absolutely zero training on how to ues the phone, transfer calls, all that good stuff, and I had a minor emotional breakdown when the phone wouldn't stop ringing and my line was stretching like four+ guests back, and nobody was responding to my backup calls. Those were the days.

SEMI-REGULAR TASKS Wrapping the defective pallets: Wrap and store the defective pallet when it's full. Also a gamble depending on how much room there is back at the receiving desk. Pallet is wrapped by hand with a giant roll of plastic wrap, not one of those fancy automatic machines! Easier task for normal-sized people,  but a bit time-consuming for tiny people like me who are not very physically strong and also terrible at maneuvering a big heavy pallet around on a pallet jack. It's gotten a bit easier with time though.

Gift registry: Helping people sign up for registries, helping people find registries, troubleshooting when registry ipads crash, explainig how the scanner works

Training receipts: When AP makes a recovery on items that were probably about to be stolen and they need a total amount of the value of the items. Putting the register in training mode requires GSA-level or higher TMs to change the register mode. Sorting all the reshop once training receipts are done.

Repackage: Refold blankets, curtains, and other items to make it look as nice as possible and/or to fit them back into the original packaging. Repacking non-defective items that have come loose from packaging. Discounting items if the repackage isn't as good as it could be but not bad enough to be defected out. Could be more difficult than it sounds due to lack of proper space to refold larger items and/or if the items don't have creased fold lines to make it easier.

Kodak: Fuck this machine, seriously. Keep Kodak photo printing machine in order, even though it was made in 2006 (IT HAS A FLOPPY DISK DRIVE, I’M NOT EVEN FUCKING JOKING) and is horrendously outdated and keeps thinking it's out of ink ribbon when it isn't. Replace ink, replace paper (there are two printers inside, and they both use slightly different-sized ink rolls and paper rolls, so this also requires keeping track of the boxes of rolls and ink to make sure you've got the right sizes). Previously: be on the phone with Kodak for ages and crawl around on top of/behind the machine to try to unplug cords and read tiny serial numbers out for the hapless Kodak representative that's just trying to help. APRIL 2017: it’s been working for the last few weeks, so fingers crossed it can hang in there a bit longer.

Saturdays: Take down the old sales ad and replace it with the new one. Menial easy, and sometimes shuffled off to the sunday opener if saturday's closer runs out of time.

Overhead announcements: paging guests, paging guests when they leave their car lights on, closing announcements (closing shifts only)

Ship-to-store: UPS dropping packages off at the service desk means those ship-to-store items are processed by guest service, not by backroom TMs. You will need a PDA! Open right app, scan packing slip, scan item, scan location barcode, put in location, repeat until all items from the order are processed, apply order labels to items if they print out*, close out receipt

Troubleshooting: fix label printers when they stop printing, try to answer calls about target.com when it stops working, teach other TMs how to do tasks like where the Sort Stuff button is, how to print labels, how to defect, etc

EMOTIONAL LABOR Reemphasizing this one because it's an understated and taxing task to undertake. Listen to guest complaints and comments, de-escalate guest anger, often become target for guest anger, have policy requirements and changes happen regularly to make things flexible for each guest, maintain a calm and pleasant demeanor the entire time, use of personal judgement and flexibility in each situation to make the outcome right every time, adjust to changes made by management (happens more often than you think!), watch suspicious guests, know that the fraudulent returns are probably going toward unsavory habits like drugs, knowing when merchandise is stolen and not being able to do anything about it, often being witness when guests are in the middle of a personal crisis in their lives.

April 2017: There is a lot that goes into this job. It’s hard. The way that the actual aspects of the job are easy because it’s just pushing buttons, but then things start to stack on top of one another. During Christmas, it’s a fucking nightmare. Last year, there were several days where I would have 9+ carts of unsorted merchandise crowded around my desk. The other TMs and I often stayed later to create more individual overflow carts to try to get the reshop organized, sometimes having 3 or 4 carts JUST for toys, 3 JUST for clothes, and so forth.

With the “hotel lobby” experience, we no longer have the default carts. Instead we have bins that hold about 1/4 of the reshop that carts can, and we condensed the bins down. Guests admire how clean it looks, and all I can think about how is how impossible this system will work when it gets past spring and summer. It’s just slow enough now for it to be okay but it is not a sustainable system for the holidays, no matter how many new people they hire.

“Can it really be this easy?” she wonders aloud. Her hand finds his, their fingers interlace. She sits back and exhaustion hits her. Physical, existential. They have both been running for so long. To sit in silence like this and really ponder their future together is to lose all momentum and collapse. 

Would this have happened sooner if she’d just said something? If she’d bought him a pornographic VHS earlier into their partnership? If she’d quit ignoring his stolen glances to her lips sooner on and made him put his money where his mouth is?

“Mulder,” she says, turning her head and opening her eyes. His mouth crashes against her jaw, undeterred from having missed its mark. In the last three and a half minutes (or so she assumes without having looked at her new watch), she has learned that Fox Mulder is a very good kisser. “Mulder!”

He stops kissing her, sits back, peels off his jacket. She’s feeling a little hot, herself. “We still haven’t actually discussed our feelings,” she says.

He looks at her with eyes half-lidded. She doesn’t know if it’s exhaustion or desire. Knowing them, it’s a healthy mix of the two.

“What’s there to say?” he says, leaning forward to kiss her again. She gently pushes him back with one hand, and he obliges.

“Plenty, Mulder. I can’t deny that I’m…attracted to you,” she says, “but we work together. That complicates matters. Besides that, we’re both tired and probably feeling a little more sentimental than normal because it’s Christmas. Are we thinking rationally?”

“Well, I’m Jewish, so it’s definitely not Christmas sentimentality on my end,” Mulder says, putting his hands up. “My thoughts have been clear as air since Hanukkah ended last week.”

Scully laughs. “You don’t even celebrate Hanukkah.”

“Exactly. So I’m thinking as rationally as anyone who doesn’t have any major winter holidays to stress out over.”

He smiles at her and her stomach twists. She has wanted this, wanted him, for so long, and denied that want every time it resurfaced. Now here he is, offering himself to her, lips wet and red as poinsettias.

“Can it really be this easy?” she wonders aloud. Her hand finds his, their fingers interlace. She sits back and exhaustion hits her. Physical, existential. They have both been running for so long. To sit in silence like this and really ponder their future together is to lose all momentum and collapse. And yet here she is, and here he is, and if they allow themselves to collapse now, it is into each other.

“Scully, you know so many things,” says Mulder. “You know Beethoven from Bach. You know the name of every bone in the human body. You know how to listen and what to say. How is it that you don’t know how easy this could be?”

Scully sighs. “It’s never been easy for me, Mulder. I’m 34 years old and the most serious relationship I’ve ever had was with a married professor. I don’t know how to do it.”

“You say that like our relationship up to this point has been fun and games,” Mulder says. She can’t tell if he’s serious or not, only that he’s looking at her with an intensity he usually reserves for the stars.

“That’s not what I mean, Mulder.” She shifts her body toward him, crosses her legs underneath her so she can see him. So she can let herself be looked at. “You know what I meant.”

"Well… I guess the question is whether we allow our relationship to reflect our feelings, or if we continue working strictly in a professional manner,” he says. She’s surprised by his pragmatism, although it’s been a long time since she’s considered their relationship strictly professional. Strictly professional would be calling only during office hours, no lingering touches, no roundabout scenic drives on their way to investigate a case. Strictly professional ended the day she dropped her robe so he could check her lower back for supposed alien death spots. Strictly professional lasted for a day, and they’ve been running together in limbo ever since.

"How do you feel?” Scully asks. “What do you want?”

“I don’t think there’s any question of what I want,” he says sadly. She furrows her brows, tries to find the source of his sobriety. Has he already given up on her? When she just spent the last few minutes practically in his lap, her tongue in his mouth?

She uncrosses her legs. Leans into him and plants a soft kiss on his lips, her hand coming to rest on the back of his neck.

"It isn’t my only pleasure in life,” she says, “to prove you wrong.”

She crawls onto his lap, straddling his legs. Biology is funny. She knows she can’t conceive, and yet her body still wants. From an evolutionary standpoint, an infertile woman had no need for the continued production of hormones, pheromones. And here she is, wanting him. She sits up on her knees and looks into his eyes, waiting for a response.

“Will it change the way we work together?” Mulder says. “If we do this?”

“Probably,” Scully says, running her fingers through the short cropped strands of hair at the base of his scalp. His legs shift under her. “No.”

“No?” he repeats.

“Well, it’s not like this is casual for either of us.” She watches his chest rise and fall, a silent breath of relief.

“I don’t want to assume anything,” he says. “I’ve made plenty of assumptions about how you feel and what you want without asking you.”

“You can assume I’m not going to just fuck you and then ask for a transfer,” Scully says. “Mulder, you’re my best friend. And I… I do love you.” She grimaces at how young the words sound coming from her, how clumsy. But the beaming smile Mulder gives her washes all her self-doubt away.

"The truth comes out,” he says.

She’s mid-”shut up, Mulder” when he kisses her, pulling her to him with his fingertips in her hair, cupping her face.

He doesn’t need to say it now; he’ll say it another time. His lips are put to better practice kissing hers. Truth be told, she’s known he loved her long before she ever realized the feeling was mutual.

The song from the grocery store, the one she can recall from every midnight mass and every caroling trip, plays in her head now as she kisses him back. Silent night. Her tongue slides along his. They’ve always found just as much comfort in silence as in speech. Just as much tension. The only sound in the room is her breath mingling with his. She breathes him in like an animal, presses a kiss to his neck and licks off some of the sweat that has accumulated there.

Holy night. His hands grip her thighs. She presses down onto him. She’s always pressing him for hard evidence, and here she has it between her legs. He wants this just as much as she does. Wants her. Butterflies rise up in her stomach. Did she ever think this was really going to happen? Did she ever think she would let it?

All is calm. Her heart pounds against his chest. She begins to grind her hips, growing frantic. Their kisses turn sloppy, two open mouths panting in unison. His fingernails lightly scratch along her side, drawing goosebumps.

All is bright. The only light illuminating the room is the streetlight outside of Mulder’s window. A sliver of moonlight hits his face, and he stares at her with reverence. They move together, fully clothed, like teenagers on his couch.

“Is this okay?” she whispers. She means this, this desperate act of frottage. She could take off her shirt, could lead him to his bedroom, but she’s so tired and this admission of love was so poorly planned. If she’d thought she was coming here tonight for this, she’d have taken a shower, shaved, changed into nicer underwear. She’s not physically prepared for sex tonight. “I mean, tonight I don’t think…”

“This is great,” he pants. “This is…”

He can’t finish his sentence, a fact that turns her on even more. She hasn’t dry-humped since she was probably 17, but she doesn’t have it in her to be embarrassed about it. He is rock-hard between her legs, his hands gripping her hips to push her down on him harder. She adjusts her legs, finds the right angle that will make this actually happen for her. Begins to let out quiet moans, little breaths of encouragement.

It’s quick and sloppy, the way they move together, they way they kiss. The rise and fall, the way he kisses her neck and whispers, “come on, Scully, yes” and palms her ass. She grows louder, her voice joining the rusting sound of cloth rubbing against cloth and his own quiet breaths, puncturing this otherwise silent night. She clutches his shoulders when she comes, rocking herself against him with every wave that rocks through her body.

Now she is whispering, “Come on, Mulder,” her fingers at the nape of his neck again, pulling his hair. For once, he does what she tells him to do, coming with a shudder. She watches his face, the look of concentration she’s seen so many times applied to this primal act. The way his eyes close and his mouth opens. She watches a dark wet spot appear at the front of his jeans.

Now that they’ve finished, she doesn’t know what to do. She’s never been good at this part, which is probably why she’s had so few (okay, one) one-night stands. How long does she stay like this, her legs beginning to cramp on either side of his? Is Mulder a cuddler, and is there room for that on his couch?

He saves her from having to make a decision on what to do. “Uhm, I’m going to go clean myself up.”

“Okay,” she says, climbing off his lap. It’s been too long for her, and even this will leave her legs stiff and sore tomorrow. Or maybe she’s just getting old. She admires his back as he walks away, unused to the strangeness of being allowed to openly look at him without fearing he’ll see her checking him out. It’s liberating. It’s terrifying.

She sinks into the couch and waits for him, and the exhaustion returns. She closes her eyes, just for a second. She’ll just doze until he comes back. This really is a very comfortable couch, she thinks. She understands now why he falls asleep on it so often.

“Scully?”

Bleary-eyed, she lifts her head, disoriented. “Hm?”

"Uh, you fell asleep.”

She opens her eyes fully. It’s still dark out, but that means nothing. The short days make it impossible to tell what time it is. “What time is it?” she asks.

“It’s 5:30,” he says sheepishly. “I’m sorry, I know you said you were due at your mother’s at 6.”

“Shit,” she says, sitting upright. “I have to go.” She looks down at herself, at her work pants and her blazer. She can’t imagine what her hair must look like right now, or her makeup. “I, uh - I have to run home and change.”

“I know,” he says. “Will you call me later?”

He looks so young, so vulnerable. She smiles even though his fragility makes her sad. She works hard to not let any trace of emotion slip through the cracks of her shell, and he wears everything on his face, completely unaware of his own intensity. She loves him, so she loves this about him.

“Of course,” she says, and he follows her to the door. She kisses him chastely, acutely aware of her morning breath but even more aware of the way her lips tingle as she pulls away. “Merry Christmas, Mulder.”

“Merry Christmas, Scully.”
