Fun Fact: Many Frogs get through Winter... Underwater
Many people have heard of the legendary frogs that are able to freeze solid and survive the winter. (if not, I did write a whole post about it. so.)
This post is not about those frogs. Though amazing, they are the exception rather than the rule. It is much more common for frogs to overwinter in other ways!
The most common strategy to survive winter is to simply live somewhere that does not have winter!
(you’ll notice there are more species of frog closer to the equator. this is not a coincidence. image source)
But some frogs don’t HAVE that luxury! SOME frogs have to deal with a winter that lasts close to 6 entire months!
(im suffering)
The majority of frogs that face this threat survive by either digging underground, or by finding a permanent body of water and just... chilling 🥶😎.
(I will not apologise for my excellent jokes. image source)
Ice is less dense than water, which is why ice burgs exist, among other things. Water is at its densest around 4°Celcius. The 4°C sinks, which means that, in the wintertime, the unfrozen bottom of the pond will (generally) not get colder than 4°C.
Additionally, frogs are ectotherms, aka “cold-blooded”, and as their body temperature drops, so too does their metabolism. This makes it so the frogs can go a long time without food, and also allows them to get by without much oxygen.
(i love them. image source)
Frogs still need some oxygen, though, so it’s a good thing that frogs are able to absorb oxygen through their skin, just like most amphibians (all amphibians? i can’t think of an exception, but there are so many frog species that I don’t want to commit to a big word like “all”).
Generally, they’ll stay at the bottom of the pond, in a spot that has enough water flow to provide sufficient oxygen for the frogs’ diminished metabolic needs! They generally don’t bury themselves in the mud, though. That part of the pond is nearly devoid of oxygen, and also where the turtles are hibernating!
Here are some pictures of frogs overwinter underwater:
(image sources, in order: mink frog, Green Frog, Bull Frog, fire-bellied toad, marsh frog, siberian wood frog, northern Leopard Frog.)
was this an excuse to show y’all a bunch of pictures of frogs that I like? Yes.
(also please note: second last frog is a siberian wood frog, NOT an american wood frog, and they DO overwinter underwater (Berman et al. 2019). They’re special because they can survive months with very little oxygen, or maybe even no oxygen at all! Good for them 😊)
This has been Fun Fact Friday, letting you know that when the frog gets cold, the frog goes to bed for 6 months. Honestly same.

calories in brackets
total calories - 1138
calories per serving - 95
Instructions -
Peel and chop your apples (very small, about the size of chocolate chips), briefly fry them in a pan with 1/4 tsp cinnamon and a little water so they don't stick. Cook for 5 minutes or until they've softened and the juice has evaporated from the pan. Then let cool completely.
Whisk together the butter, melted, egg whites and vanilla in a bowl.
Stir in the sugar.
Sift in all the dry ingredients including the rest of the cinnamon.
Fold in the cooled apples.
Add each cookie into a piece of greaseproof paper (split the mix into 12) then flatten gently with your fingers.
Bake at 180 degrees celcius for approximately 10-12 minutes then let cool for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Done xx
Note - These can taste better with a little glaze, sometimes I add glace icing, which is just a little icing sugar and water x

Today I have a lot of time, so longer recipe it is (Look under the cut this time, it's worth it).
Day x1
"Guinea fowl in a sour sauce"
Ingredients [for 4-5 people]: 1 medium sized guinea fowl, 1 onion, 100g of chicken stock, half a glass of white dry wine, olive oil, around 1.5 tbsp of butter, cream, salt, pepper, 20 fresh basil leaves, 10 small [collected as early as possible] potatoes, mustard.
How to make:
1. Gut the guinea fowl and divide it into pieces. Salt and brush it with olive oil.
2. Cut the onion and cook it for 10 minutes. Then drain.
3. Transfer the onion to a saucepan. Add two tablespoons of olive oil, a tablespoon of butter, the chicken stock and half a glass of wine. Simmer over a low heat for 15 minutes while being careful not to burn it. Towards the end, add two tablespoons of cream.
4. When it slightly thickens, blend everything it together.
5. Add a teaspoon of mustard. Add salt. Stir over low heat. Set it away [from the stove].
6. Fry the guinea fowl pieces in a Teflon pan.
7. Reduce the heat, add a teaspoon of butter and flip it a few times being careful not to burn the butter.
8. Transfer it to a saucepan. Mix half a cup of cold water with the excess oil left after frying and pour it into the saucepan with the guinea fowl. Pepper it and let it simmer, under the lid, over a medium heat until tender (about half an hour).
9. Meanwhile, boil the 10 potatoes in their skins. Drain it. Let it cool. Then cut them in half.
10. Finely chop the fresh basil leaves.
11. Add five tbsp of excess oil from frying to the previously prepared sauce, then mix it together and add basil.
12. Preheat oven to 250 degrees Celcius. Place the sliced potatoes in a saucepan with the guinea fowl, mix with the remaining excess oil. Place the whole thing in the oven for 15-20 minutes; without a lid. Serve with green beans cooked "al dente". Sauce can be served separately.
"Vacation adventures of Wojciech Pszoniak" Exerpt from probably Wojtek's first film, directed by him also. Probably also the vacation where he saved Tadeusz Różewicz and 4 Frenchmen from drowning. Lmk if anyone wishes to hear about it.

what's your gingerbread recipe??
Oh what a DELIGHTFUL ask! Let me go and dig my recipe out ...
For one batch:
250 g butter 2 dl light syrup 4 dl sugar 2 tbsp cinnamon 1 tbsp ground cardamom 1 tbsp ground cloves 1 tsp ground ginger 2 dl water 1 tbsp baking soda (...bicarbonate? not baking POWDER at least) 13 dl flour Instructions: 1. Melt butter and syrup in a pot on the stove 2. Measure sugar and all the spices in a large bowl. LARGE bowl. 3. Add the melted sugar/syrup mixture and stir properly (at this point it's gonna start smelling AMAZING) 4. Add the water, and stir again. Let the mixture cool until it's room temperature. 5. Mix flour and baking soda, and sieve down in the other mixture. Mix well. The dough is pretty loose, but that's okay because now it's gonna rest for at least 1-2 days (I usually keep it in the fridge), and it will swell during this time! Once it's done (you can let it sit for longer than 1-2 days of course, too, no rush!), you take a piece of dough, roll it out onto a flour:ed surface and roll them to about 2-4 mm thickness. Cut out your shapes, put them on a cookie sheet, and put in the oven. 175 degrees celcius, for ... if you're making ordinary-sized cookies like gingerbread men or stuff like that, I'd say 7-8 minutes. (a bit shorter if the pieces are smaller/thinner, and a bit longer if they're bigger/thicker). Remove from oven and let cool. (If you want rounded shapes, place them onto a rounded surface immediately when they are taken from the oven, and let them cool in that shape. They're hot, so I recommend you wear painter's gloves or something to protect your hands, if you do this)
And then decorate and enjoy! :)

AND...
i'm off to travel to see my dad in ottawa! i'll be sticking around a few days before taking off to montreal for a whirlwind night over at my bestie's house before heading back towards home to see my mum, so that i can pretend to rest for a few days while finishing resident evil 7. all before getting hurled right back into ✨ q4 madness ✨ so needless to say, i'm around, i'm posting while i have the time off, but for those that know me well, you know january's a bit of shit show for me.
in a more grateful note, my now-yearly trip back to asia has been booked, and i'm doing a group trip with friends up to taiwan and thailand. i'm looking forward to escaping the absolute hell of winter for warmer weather, especially since i might end up in winnipeg in a few weeks! 💀 pray it isn't so y'all, it's legit -50 degrees celcius out there. i was not built to survive that!!!

The Spark of an Eternal Flame (a story about how Sulane and Luvan met and fell in love!)
It was a cold November morning in the city-state of Naitula; the sea next to the city only made it colder. It was a holiday; most people slept in, but for one woman, sleeping in wasn't an option.
Sulane was 111 years old—about 19 years old in Hylian terms—and she was a warrior. She was a member of the Naitulan Marines, one of the best fighters in the entire city. The marines never got days off, so she had to go to work. At least she got paid well compared to others.
“Okay, let's get started,” Vites—Crown Prince of Naitula and Leader of the Marines—said. “There have been reports of monsters on the South Bank of the Opal River, near the mouth of the river. One of them was reported to be a Silver Lynel. Does anyone want to offer to hunt this Lynel?”
Sulane raised her hand, bandages covering fresh scars bending over her chest.
“Are you… sure, Suten?” Vites asked, unknowing of Sulane's chosen name. “You're injured. You fought off a two-hundred man army last week and got a giant wound across your chest. If I was allowed to, I would dismiss you until you heal. You need rest.”
“No,” Sulane responded, “I can go and find it. You can count on me.”
“Okay, okay. You can, on one condition. You will be on paid medical leave afterwards. No ifs ands or buts. You can't fight like this.”
“Yes, sir.”
Sulane grabbed her sword and a compass and went out to hunt this Lynel.
It was a rather short walk, all things considered. It was only about 643 meters to the river, but the cold and her injuries made it tougher to get there. It was 7° celcius; it was November after all.
She eventually got to the riverbank and went to look for this Lynel. Several hours later, it was 10:00 o'clock, and there was no sign of this Lynel. Sulane was tired at this point, the sand looked pretty comfortable, and there was no sight of this Lynel. Since she saw no harm in it, she decided to fall asleep on the grass. She'd been up since 6:00 o'clock; she needed the rest.
“Hey, are you okay?” A voice said, stirring Sulane from her slumber.
“What…? Yes? Who in Hylia's name are you?” A dazy Sulane said, rubbing her eyes.
“I'm Luvan, the Prince's… ‘brother’. Who are you?”
“Oh… I am very sorry for worrying you, my liege. My name is… Suten. I just… needed rest.”
“You didn't seem very confident about your name, Suten.”
“You didn't seem very confident about being the Prince’s brother.”
“You've caught me! I'm non-binary, not a guy.”
“Oh? Heh, I'm trans. I go by Sulane.”
“Sulane? That's… a very beautiful name. Don't say what—”
“Thanks, I chose it myself!”
“Oh fucking course!”
“You put yourself in this situation, Luvan!”
“That's fair, I very much did lead myself into that.”
“Yeah, you did.”
“Say, do you need help? Your bandage around your chest seems a bit… stained.”
“Oh, I'd like that, thanks.”
Sulane walked with Luvan to the Palace in Naitula, where Luvan helped give her more bandages and gave her a hand to hold whenever she was taking the particularly unpleasant antibiotics she had to take. Have you ever had to put antibiotics on a wound? Those can sting like nobody's business.
This happened every day for about two weeks; Sulane going to Luvan for help with bandages (because reaching behind your back to tie something can be tough), Luvan holding her hand so that she wouldn't punt anyone or anything because of the wound stinging, and the two just talking.
One day, however, Sulane needed to confess the feelings she acquired for Luvan. It wasn't immediate, but sometime over those two weeks she developed feelings for the royal. Sulane also needed to practice her sword skills. Why not spar with Luvan and confess afterwards?
Sulane eventually found Luvan in a meadow outside of Naitula and smiled at the other Zora, “Luvan! Would you like to spar with me?”
“Oh! Sure, I wouldn't mind. Just please don't flatten me into a pancake.”
“Of course I wouldn't! You're my friend, and my superior. I wouldn't intentionally hurt you!”
“I know! Let's just get to sparring!”
The two grabbed their swords, and they began sparring. Luvan fought gracefully, their movements resembling a dancer in a ballet; sassy spins, dodges, and flips galore! Sulane fought more tactically on the other hand. She evaded Luvan’s attacks, looked for weak points during their impressive moves, and never once took her eyes off the other Zora.
Sulane eventually knocked Luvan down and disarmed them during a spin. Sulane almost immediately checked to make sure they were okay, and then hugged them?
“Why are you hugging me, Sulane?” Luvan asked.
“It's because I have something to tell you.”
“Oh? What is it?”
“I… I love you. I love you, Luvan. I don't know how, but you're the first person I've loved since I was in middle school.”
“You love me? Oh, Sulane…” Luvan tightly hugged Sulane back. “I love you, too. You're just so damn sweet! My parents won't allow us to be together, though…”
“Who said they need to know?”
“That's a fair point.”

Any snow yet in Norway? We never get any here in California sadly.
Hi, anon!
Norway is kind of like the US when it comes to weather. It's very different weather in the north, south, east and west of the country. Very different climate. I'm in the south west so we hardly ever get snow. We got one day of snow in november and we usually get maybe a week of snow in jan/feb. But it's like a two hour drive up the mountains to get a lot of snow.
Today it's cloudy and 7 degrees celcius/44.6 farenheit. Pretty on brand for this time of year. I think there's snow in the south, south east and northern part of the country righ now, but i'm not sure. I don't really like snow and icy conditions, so i'm good 😅

Pro 4na tip !
Potatos is a really good food for wl because it suppress your appetite so much and it’s very easy to make fat free fries if you have a airfryer
How to do it:
Peel your potatos
Cut them into fries
Cook in water for 5-7 minutes (not for too long because then they will fall apart)
Let them dry on a towel and sprinkle some salt and wait for about 15-30 minutes until fully dry
Place them in the airfryer with some space between every fry
Let them airfry for 20 minutes, 200 celcius

to me, as someone who moved from the USA to Australia and had to get used to celcius, metric, etc. and it's so much easier than whatever the fuck america is doing. 0° is freezing. 100° is boiling. 50° is half of boiling so 40° is a hot day. 25-35° is normal summer and sometimes a bit too hot. 7-15° is winter and cold. 20° is t-shirt with pants weather. <23° is shorts. >18° is jumper weather. it's simple except for melbourne melbourning and the weather being weird as shit but that's beside the point
i prefer celsius more for the inverse of this
i can barely handle celsius and the seven day week, so i think if i lived in the states and had to remember fahrenheit as well i'm pretty sure my brain would explode
