Idk maybe i'm late to the discussion but from what i heard from people around me, people are mad at cheerleaders being there because (and this is not me hating on it i know it's an american thing) f1 is being americanized and that that is not necessarily a good thing for the sport (i'm not talking about the money thing, but about the fact that the focus should be on the racing and everything else is unnecessary? Like ive had (older generation) people tell me that even this whole music act thing (and the circus) is unnecessary? Like it's not a festival, it's not supposed to be coachella, people tune in for the race and the drivers)

not to worry the discussion was just me commentating into the void !!

but yes, that does seem like part of it. mainly i was seeing people upset by the sexism of it all (& “stepping backwards” after finally getting rid of grid girls and trying to boost f1 academy) which is what my original commentary was about. personally i don’t see cheerleaders as the pinnacle of misogyny (likely because i am used of american sports), which is why i have always been a bit confused about the outrage that got grid girls banned. same thing in my mind… though i guess, culturally, grid girls may have been treated differently than cheerleaders based exactly on that distinction. idk.

anyway: the “americanization” of f1 does seem to be a giant point of contention. i agree watching the podium placers walk out between the cheerleader lines was slightly hysterical because they looked so confused and it was just… excessive. i liked the pre-race show appearance, would have been happy to see them still doing some cheering near the podium, but the walk-out style a la miami being replicated here was A Bit Much.

i just don’t know how much this can really be blamed on american fans per se and how much it needs to be taken up with liberty media/f1… they seem to be driving the “entertainment” push & the american gps are giving them what they asked for and being actively encouraged (i believe) to go all out and “american” with it. in theory it’s kind of a genius PR move by f1/liberty because it means they can get the circus they want and tap into american viewership while simultaneously shifting the blame onto american fans/gps when/if things go over poorly abroad.

all that to say is i’m interested to see how this shakes out with next year’s calendar and the potential waning of american interest if the “mainstream” fans push to reduce american involvement. like, is liberty still going to try to push gp hosts to amp up the craziness anyway? will they abandon the project and just pass it off as a failed american experiment? are we going to see it backfire for f1 and see a migration from all the new american fans being pushed to indycar and nascar instead, since those are already “ours” (quote unquote) and more receptive to new viewership? inquiring minds (me) want to know

THE PERMANENT RAIN PRESS INTERVIEW WITH PETER BUNDIC

You may recognize him from Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but Peter Bundic has a few more tricks up his sleeve – behind the camera and on several sports fields as well! We caught up with the charismatic performer to discuss his time on Sabrina, how athletic prowess carries over to his other bodies of work, and what’s next.

One of your more prominent roles to date has been football-playing jock Carl Tapper in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. What did you find most challenging about playing this character?

I think the really cool part about playing Carl wasn’t necessarily that it was challenging, but that in playing this character, it really accentuated the growth of the other characters being hurt by the bullies and overcoming them in the show. Kindness and love always win – something I wish Carl learned a little sooner haha.

What was your favourite scene to be a part of, and why?

There were so many great scenes I can remember it’s so tough to choose just one! One of my favourites was when Billy (Ty Wood) and I got to trash the carnival and then got turned into pigs. I was really curious as to what our pig versions would look like and they were actually really cute.

Do you keep in touch with your former castmates?

It can definitely be tough sometimes with us being in different places, but it’s always a blast when we get the chance to reconnect. Such an amazing cast to be a part of and lots of memories to follow it.

You also appeared as Steve in Spontaneous – a coming-of-age dark comedy starring Katherine Langford and Charlie Plummer. Do you have a favourite memory from set?

Honestly, some of the funniest random moments happened in between set-ups during some of our long shoot days. Once you get past the feeling of being tired, you get really creative with activities to keep yourself occupied… Many times we made little flip cup obstacle games to keep us energized for the next scene.

Next up for you is indie short Cupid. What can you share about this project – and can we expect a release around Happy Heart’s Day?

Cupid was a really interesting one to shoot. It’s not your usual Valentines movie; let’s just say that for now. I don’t have an official release day to share just yet but I’ll be sure to post about it once it’s ready to go!

In addition to acting, you have screenwriting and directing credits. Where did this ambition come from, leaning into all aspects of the filmmaking process?

When making shorts, I’ve always tried to learn both sides of film to deepen my understanding of how a film comes to life. In that, I’ve found tons of love and appreciation for writing and directing. Every position in film needs watering like a plant, and those two jobs are definitely not simple but truly rewarding.

Are there any filmmakers you look up to in particular? Or stylistic techniques you’d like to experiment with in the future?

On Sabrina, the show runner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa amazed me with the amount of work he puts in to make all these shows come to life. It really takes an accomplished, driven individual to be able to do what he does. The list of great people I’ve worked with and would like to work with just goes on and on…

I’ve had the pleasure to experiment with different ideologies of performance on many platforms, but I think what I look forward to most is trying new things and always keeping an open mind. There’s always something new to learn and that’s great at keeping you humble.

Your older sister Janette is also an actor, and your initial interest in acting came from her. Do you run lines together – or did you growing up?

Janette’s credited with getting me started as an actor, and we’ve always been really close. Among enjoying our normal brother-sister time, always happy to run lines with each other.

You’re also an accomplished athlete, having represented BC/Canada at football events in Las Vegas and Miami. Would you say the discipline and team aspect of sports have carried over to your entertainment career?

I think it definitely carries over into life in general. I’ve spent some years learning martial arts as well and the discipline I’ve adopted has helped me stay on task, even when life seems super overwhelming sometimes. It’s a great way to stay grounded.

What is one thing readers would be surprised to know about you?

If you’re one of my close friends, you’d know that if a song I like comes on in the car there’s absolutely no holding me back. To the point where it gets annoying sometimes.

Who are you listening to on your playlist?

I’m one of those people who say “I listen to everything,” but actually don’t have a favourite genre. Rock and roll as well as R&B are up there – but when I like a song I really like that song.

If you could be any ice cream flavour, which would you be and why?

I’m way too tempted to say vanilla because that’s always my go-to flavour, but I’ll spice it up this time and say vanilla caramel. Caramel in chocolates were my favourite growing up, so why not combine the two?

On the outskirts of the city, power lines sag and buzz, overloaded with electrons as the demand for air conditioning soars and the entire grid is pushed to the limit. In an Arizona heat wave, electricity is not a convenience, it is a tool for survival.

As the mercury rises, people die. The homeless cook to death on hot sidewalks. Older folks, their bodies unable to cope with the metabolic stress of extreme heat, suffer heart attacks and strokes. Hikers collapse from dehydration. As the climate warms, heat waves are growing longer, hotter, and more frequent. Since the 1960s, the average number of annual heat waves in 50 major American cities has tripled. They are also becoming more deadly. Last year, there were 181 heat-related deaths in Arizona’s Maricopa County, nearly three times the number from four years earlier. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 2004 and 2017, about a quarter of all weather-related deaths were caused by excessive heat, far more than other natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes.

“What will the Hurricane Katrina of extreme heat look like?” he wonders aloud as we sit in a cafe near the ASU campus. Katrina, which hit New Orleans in 2005, resulting in nearly 2,000 deaths and more than $100 billion in economic damage, demonstrated just how unprepared a city can be for extreme climate events.

“Hurricane Katrina caused a cascading failure of urban infrastructure in New Orleans that no one really predicted,” Chester explains. “Levees broke. People were stranded. Rescue operations failed. Extreme heat could lead to a similar cascading failure in Phoenix, exposing vulnerabilities and weaknesses in the region’s infrastructure that are difficult to foresee.”

In Chester’s view, a Phoenix heat catastrophe begins with a blackout.

When the city goes dark, the order and convenience of modern life begin to fray. Without air conditioning, temperatures in homes and office buildings soar. (Ironically, new, energy-efficient buildings are tightly sealed, making them dangerous heat traps.) Traffic signals go out. Highways gridlock with people fleeing the city. Without power, gas pumps don’t work, leaving vehicles stranded with empty tanks. Water pipes crack from the heat, and water pumps fail, leaving people scrounging for fresh water. Hospitals overflow with people suffering from heat exhaustion and heatstroke. If there are wildfires, the air will become hazy and difficult to breathe. If a blackout during extreme heat continues for long, rioting, looting, and arson could begin.

And people will start dying. How many? “Katrina-like numbers,” Chester predicts. Which is to say, thousands. Chester describes all this coolly, as if a Phoenix heat apocalypse is a matter of fact, not hypothesis.

“How likely is this to happen?” I ask.

“It’s more a question of when,” Chester says, “not if.”

Extreme heat is the most direct, tangible, and deadly consequence of our hellbent consumption of fossil fuels. Rising carbon-dioxide levels in the atmosphere trap heat, which is fundamentally changing our climate system. “Think of the Earth’s temperature as a bell curve,” says Penn State climate scientist Michael Mann. “Climate change is shifting the bell curve toward the hotter end of the temperature scale, making extreme-heat events more likely.” As the temperature rises, ice sheets are melting, seas are rising, hurricanes are getting more intense, rainfall patterns are changing (witness the recent flooding in the Midwest). Drought and flooding inflict tremendous economic damage and create political chaos, but extreme heat is much more likely to kill you directly. The World Health Organization predicts heat stress linked to the climate crisis will cause 38,000 extra deaths a year worldwide between 2030 and 2050. A recent study published in Nature Climate Change found that by 2100, if emissions continue to grow, 74 percent of the world’s population will be exposed to heat waves hot enough to kill. “The more warming you have, the more heat waves you have,” says Michael Wehner, a scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. “The more heat waves you have, the more people die. It’s a pretty simple equation.”

Extreme heat is already transforming our world in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. Disney executives recently voiced concern that rising temperatures will significantly reduce the number of visits to their parks. In Germany, officials were forced to put a speed limit on the autobahn because of fears the road would buckle from heat. The U.S. military has already incurred as much as $1 billion in costs during the past decade — from lost work, retraining, and medical care — due to the health impacts of heat. The warming of the planet “will affect the Department of Defense’s ability to defend the nation and poses immediate risks to U.S. national security,” a recent DOD report said. Forests and soils are drying out, contributing to explosive and unprecedented wildfires. Habitation zones for plants and animals are changing, forcing them to adapt to a warmer world or die. A U.N. report found that 1 million species are at risk of extinction in the coming decades. Another study by researchers at MIT suggests that rising temperatures and humidity may make much of South Asia, including parts of India and Pakistan, too hot for human existence by the end of the century. As scientist Peter Gleick, co-founder of the Pacific Institute in California, told me, “There is a shocking, unreported, fundamental change coming to the habitability of many parts of the planet, including the USA.”

But the greatest risk to human health may be in areas that are already hot, where temperature increases will strain habitability. In the U.S., the fastest-warming cities are in the Southwest. Las Vegas, El Paso, Tucson, and Phoenix have warmed the most, each by at least 4.3°F since 1970. Globally, many of the hottest cities are in India. In May, a deadly heat wave sent temperatures above 120°F in the north. The desert city of Churu recorded a high of 123°F, nearly breaking India’s record of 123.8°F, set in 2016. There were warnings not to go outside after 11 a.m. Authorities poured water on roads to keep them from melting. A 33-year-old man was reportedly beaten to death in a fight over water. The preliminary death toll in India for this summer’s heat wave is already more than 200, and that number is likely to grow.

How hot will it get? That depends largely on how far and how fast carbon-dioxide levels rise, which depends on how much fossil fuel the world continues to burn. The Paris Climate Agreement (which President Trump pulled the U.S. out of) aims to limit the warming to 3.6°F (2°C). Given the current trajectory of carbon pollution, hitting that target is all but impossible. Unless nations of the world take dramatic action soon, we are headed for a warming of at least 5.4°F (3°C) by the end of the century, making the Earth roughly as warm as it was 3 million years ago during the Pliocene era, long before Homo sapiens came along. “Human beings have literally never lived on a planet as hot as it is today,” says Wehner. A 5.4°F-warmer world would be radically different from the one we know now, with cities swamped by rising seas and epic droughts turning rainforests into deserts. The increased heat alone would kill significant numbers of people. A recent report from the University of Bristol estimated that with 5.4°F of warming, about 5,800 people could die each year in New York due to the heat, 2,500 could die in Los Angeles, and 2,300 in Miami. “The relationship between heat and mortality is clear,” Eunice Lo, a climate scientist at the University of Bristol and the lead author of the report, tells me. “The warmer the world becomes, the more people die.”

The psychological impacts of extreme heat are obvious to anyone who’s ever felt cranky on a hot day. But the impacts go beyond crankiness. When temperatures rise, suicide rates can go up at a pace similar to the impact of economic recessions. Some aspects of higher cognition are impaired. School test scores decline, with one study showing decreases across five measures of cognitive function, including reaction times and working memory.

The link between heat and violence is particularly intriguing. “There is growing evidence of a psychological mechanism that is impacted by heat, although we can’t yet say exactly what that is,” says Solomon Hsiang, a professor of public policy at Berkeley. Some scientists speculate that higher temperatures impact neurotransmitters in the brain, resulting in lower levels of serotonin, which has been shown to lead to aggressive behavior. So rising heat may literally alter the chemistry in our brains. One study showed that police officers were more likely to fire on intruders during training exercises when it was hot. Andrew Shaver, a professor of political science at the University of California, Merced, analyzed data about conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq and found that attacks by insurgents involving RPGs and assault rifles increased with higher temperatures, while planned attacks did not. “During conflicts, higher temperatures seem to provoke more impulsive aggression,” Shaver says. One speculative paper projects that by 2099, due to rising heat, the U.S. could see an additional 22,000 murders, 180,000 rapes, 3.5 million assaults, and 3.76 million robberies, burglaries, and acts of larceny.

A recent poll found that two-thirds of Arizonans accept that climate change is happening, but most elected officials in the state, including Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, are hardly climate activists. Arizona is one of the sunniest states in the nation, and yet only 6.5 percent of the state’s electricity comes from solar power. A statewide ballot initiative in 2018 to require 50 percent renewable power by 2030 was soundly defeated, in part because the parent company of Arizona Public Service, the big public utility in the state, spent more than $37 million on false and misleading arguments about how transitioning to renewable power would raise power bills and destroy the Arizona economy.

“We have a large number of elected officials who don’t believe in climate change, period,” says Stacey Champion, a longtime Phoenix energy and climate activist. “How do you get effective, data-driven policy if you have people pushing hard against it because they are batshit crazy, or they are afraid it will spook companies like Nike who want to come here?”

Air conditioning is one of those paradoxical modern technologies that creates just as many problems as it solves. For one thing, it requires a lot of energy, most of which comes from fossil fuels. AC and fans already account for 10 percent of the world’s energy consumption. Globally, the number of air-conditioning units is expected to quadruple by 2050. Even accounting for modest growth in renewable power, the carbon emissions from all this new AC would result in a more than 0.9°F increase in global temperature by the year 2100.

Cheap air conditioning is like crack cocaine for modern civilization, keeping us addicted and putting off serious thinking about more creative (and less fossil-fuel-intensive) solutions. Air conditioning also creates a kind of extreme heat apartheid. If you’re rich, you have a big house with enough air conditioning to chill a martini. And if you are poor, like Leonor Juarez, a 46-year-old single mother whom I met on a recent July afternoon when the temperature was hovering around 115°F, you live in South Phoenix, where sidewalks are dirt and trees are few, and you hope you can squeeze enough money out of your paycheck to run the AC for a few hours on hot summer nights.

On hot days, Juarez’s small apartment feels like a cave. She has heavy purple curtains on the windows to block the sun. “I could not live here without air conditioning,” she tells me. Because she has poor credit, she doesn’t qualify for the usual monthly billing from Salt River Project, her utility. Instead, to pay for electricity and keep her AC running, SRP has given her a card reader that plugs into an outlet that she has to feed like a jukebox to keep the power on. Juarez turns on her AC only a few hours a day — still, her electric bill can run $500 a month during the summer, which is more than she pays for rent. To Juarez, who takes a bus five miles to a laundromat in the middle of the night because washing machines are discounted to 50 cents a load after 1 a.m., $500 is a tremendous amount of money.

She shows me the meter on the card reader: She has $49 worth of credit on it, enough for a few more days of power. And when that runs out? “I am in trouble,” she says bluntly. Juarez, who works as an in-home caretaker for the elderly, says she knows of several people who lived alone and died when they failed to pay their electric bills and tried to live without AC.

Ok, so 2019

This year was a mix of goods and okays. This for sure feels like a transition point, where normal is not comfortable, and change is imminent. We have our sights on new adventures in the West coast. And while it didn't come to fruition this year, the intent has been built and we are set to make 2020 a big turn. But first, let's recap 2019:

2019 was no slow down of travel from the past, which really is our ambition. With the help of Southwest companion pass, we were able to take advantage and travel to many places. Plus the job flew me out to a few additional location, as well as two interviews in San Francisco was of some one else's dime. Let's go through the list:

San Francisco: same for an interview, stayed for my 30th birthday celebration with the SF crew. Cat Cafe, a couple brunch spots, improv show. Always a good time and perhaps a little taste of what's to come. I was flown out a second time, and while quick, was able to fit in a quick night adventure with Kim. It was heartbreaking for this opportunity not to come into fruition, but on to the next as they say.

Easley SC: quick trip for work, not much here but hey, free travel

Washington DC/Virginia: fun trip with Ashley, exploring the city. At the time DC was a possible location to move, and we did get good vibes. We spent time hanging out with Ashley's old friends, and sightseeing. I haven't been to DC since I was a kid, so seeing the monuments now I had a better appreciation. Tied to this trip was a quick visit to Manassas, to see my cousins and his two daughters. That was a nice quick visit to get some ice cream in town and some real BonChon haha.

Puerto Rico: always a favorite, hanging out with Ashley's family, we went hiking up parts of El Yunque, beach times and just hanging out. I had a delicious Cuban sandwich chopped up perhaps in a Puerto Rican style. Delicioso.

Park City Utah: this was a fun trip for Sheri's birthday. A lot of the schmooters crew came out for to stay in a cabin like house within the valley of a bunch of ski mountain. We were at the tail end of winter/spring, but thanks to climate change we did see snow(and briefly hail) which added to the trip. Jacuzzi while snowing, party games, staying in, and watching the stars. Pretty awesome trip and a true showing that it we really come together for each other, not necessarily for the city.

Jacksonville: quick trip to see Ashley's cousin, little 4th of July action

St. Augustine: back to back I believe weekends from Jacksonville to see Becca Matt and Mason.

Raleigh North Carolina: Anthony's wedding, Raleigh has a surprisingly cultured downtown. Had time to grab different bites, plus explore downtown, NC state, drive pass the museum of art, and take a rest in the wildlife forest by the airport.

Titusville: a few times we visited Eddy, going to the local beach (which had some wild big waves, that was awesome to boogy board) and also see Eddy's new house, plus a rocket launch!

Portland Maine: quick work trip to diagnose an issue, caught this town in the thick of fall. Beautiful fall colors, it's a shame I never made it past half a mile from the airport. But did get to eat Maine's favorites: lobster bisque and blueberry pie.

Montego Bay Jamaica: celebrating 15 years with Ashley (officially half of our lives together), it was a fun all inclusive resort. Jamaican patties everyday, curried goat, and great Thai as well. Not enough time, but very enjoyable

Milwaukee WI: glad to get here one more time for training paid by the company. I was able to hit a few favorites plus a few new spots, saw Julia Michaels in concert, watch the Bucks play at a crazy sports bar, watched Parasite at a beautiful old theater, and listened to classical guitar at a museum of art. I love the city a lot and had a lot of time to get to know it. This may be the last time I get to go on company dime, but I really hope it's not the last time I visit. I'd love to get property to frequently visit as I get older, trully a place that has my heart.

Tampa: wild Thanksgiving weekend of Ocala straight to Tampa, including three different hotels in the 5 days. But Tampa/St. Pete is always a good time, and we were there to see Lizzo

Las Vegas: AJ's bachelor party with his cousins and the schmooters fam. It's funny to see how we grow up, because during my bachelor party we sardine canned 11 guys into 2 rooms, and went everywhere as a crew. This time most of us got separate rooms and split up frequently to do our own thing. But we had great moments together, and Ashley and I had a little extra time to ourselves. Las Vegas is always a great and expensive time. It helps to win in craps and roulette, but eventually the house always wins haha.

Wow. Every year I'm surprised by how much travel we accomplish, and would be surprised to think the next year would be just as much. But thanks to the companion pass, points, and Tracy's Hilton friends and family, we manage to do a lot on a discount. I love it and grateful we can do it year after year.

Sabrina Claudio: nice to see here again live, what a great voice, and to see her at a venue with her headlining

Julia Michaels: wow this one too. I love one of her songs, but being able to know the setlist ahead of time, I had the chance to fall in love withore of her songs, and to know the words to all of the songs. What a performer and her and her band make one of my favorite shows ever

Harry Potter orchestra: we did the first movie, but the composition of this movie is exceptional we couldn't miss it

Lizzo/Sam Smith: Ashley's wish to see Lizzo in concert, a whim decision in the middle of the night I planned the entire trip to Tampa. It was cool to go back to a Jingle ball concert (my first concert was a jingle ball) and the setlist was pretty decent.

Other highlights:

Story corp: Ashley and I recorded a podcast, going through our relationship. It was a fun time and cool to have a piece of us be preserved in a national archive.

Marriage classes: continuing from 2018 we did a set of marriage classes. We enjoy these to help fortify our relationship and make sure we communicate to each other clearly. Highly recommend for any couple getting married.

Coffee shop Sundays: we started this in heavy pursuit to look for new opportunities, it allowed us to explore new spaces in the Orlando area (and even in Miami). It's a nice way to spend time with Ashley, as well as follow through with our intents.

No Shave November: first time participating, I thought I'd try to see what growing my beard would be like, plus if I can raise money for Cancer. Well surpriaingly I raise $291, and matching that to a total of $581 to various cancer research organizations. It's compelling the power of contributing as a community can be, when many times it can be doubting to try and do it alone.

This year was a weird mix of stagnation but also pandemonium. It constantly felt like we were always going somewhere on the weekends and on vacation, with very few days of just being in the house. But also at work and our jobs, we feel very stagnant as I haven't seen any progression in my profession since last year. This has truly set a spark in Ashley and I looking collectively for new opportunities, and we hope to see this come to fruition in 2020. It surely be an adventure this coming year, we can only hope it is filled with fun adventures and fulfillment.

Homeowners Stopped Paying Mortgages

Some 3.6 million Americans are now past due on their home payments, the most since 2015

(Johannes Eisele/AFP/Getty Images) By Kathy Orton  Record unemployment caused by the coronavirus pandemic led to the largest one-month increase in mortgage delinquencies ever recorded. The number of borrowers who stopped paying their home loans spiked by 1.6 million last month, new data shows. Not even during the Great Recession did delinquencies rise this fast. During that time, it took 18 months before there was a single-month increase as large. The national delinquency rate soared to 6.45 percent in April, up from 3.06 percent in March and three times the previous single-month record set in 2008, according to data released this week by Black Knight, a real estate data and analytics company. The 3.6 million borrowers who are past due are the most since 2015. The data represents homeowners who didn’t make a mortgage payment in April, including those who are in forbearance plans. It comes from the company’s loan-level database representing a majority of the national mortgage market. “This is truly uncharted territory,” Andy Walden, economist, and director of market research at Black Knight wrote in an email. “During the last financial crisis, it took more than a year and a half before we saw the first 1.6 million homeowners fall past due on mortgages as a result. In the economic fallout from Covid-19, that many people became past due in April alone. “Given that just 21 percent of the now 4.75 million homeowners in forbearance have made their May payments so far, this is a trend that is likely to continue.” What you need to know about asking for mortgage forbearance You only need to look at the job market to understand why so many people aren’t paying their mortgages these days. The U.S. economy shed 20 million jobs in April and the unemployment rate soared to its highest level since the Great Depression as many businesses nationwide shuttered. Back then, they were more spread out over a longer period of time. “When you think of the Great Recession, it really started in 2007, 2008, but delinquencies didn’t peak until 2010,” Walsh said. “With the Great Recession, quite frankly, it dragged on quite awhile. … It happened in waves. It’s not as if a whole industry went flat. Like you have hospitality and tourism, there were whole industries that were put on hold.”

Home values haven’t fallen dramatically, and many homeowners have equity in their homes. Because of that, Walsh doesn’t expect foreclosures to be as devastating as last time. Under the Cares Act, foreclosures of federally backed mortgages have been temporarily paused. Walsh also pointed out that borrowers have more alternatives to avoid foreclosure. “It’s not as if all these homeowners are underwater and they had no incentive” to make a mortgage payment, she said. “Here, there’s an incentive to make mortgage payments.” The Mortgage Bankers Association, which releases its delinquency data quarterly, found that past-due mortgages rose to 4.36 percent in the first quarter after being at an all-time low of 3.77 percent in the fourth quarter of 2019. It also tracks the number of loans that have gone into forbearance. When a loan goes into forbearance, payments are reduced or postponed. The number of loans in forbearance is also increasing, albeit at a slower pace than previously. Black Knight found that 4.75 million homeowners, or 9 percent of mortgages, had entered into forbearance plans, representing $1 trillion in unpaid principal balances. MBA’s survey of lenders found 4.1 million homeowners had requested a forbearance plan, or 8.16 percent of loans. By comparison, less than 1 percent of loans were in forbearance in early March. Under the Cares Act, homeowners can suspend their mortgage payments if they have a federally backed mortgage. “The numbers are unfortunately pretty dismal,” Walsh said. “The hope is with the stimulus coming to borrowers, unemployment will help in the short term. I think a lot of this is going to be regional.” Black Knight’s data shows that states that are home to some of the hardest-hit industries are suffering the most. The states that had the biggest increases in delinquent mortgages include Nevada (5.2 percent increase), New Jersey (5.1 percent), and New York (4.9 percent). Miami (7.2 percent), Las Vegas (6.2 percent) and New York City (5.4 percent) topped the metropolitan areas. The pace of mortgages going into forbearance has slackened recently with 93,000 borrowers entering into it last week, down from 1.4 million in the first week of April. Black Knight also found that of the 4.25 million homeowners who were in forbearance at the end of April, nearly half made their April mortgage payment. Just as not everyone who is delinquent on a mortgage is in forbearance, it is also true that not all borrowers who are in forbearance have stopped making payments. Some made full payments but are holding on to forbearance as a safety net, while others made partial payments to lessen the amount they ultimately have to repay. Black Knight pointed out that May is shaping up differently. As of May 19, only 21 percent of those in forbearance plans have made a May payment. The 1.4 million homeowners in forbearance who made April payments are at risk of becoming past due in May. If the payments aren’t received by the end of the month, they would become delinquent, which could lead to another sharp increase in the national delinquency rate. Trading up for a RB seems silly but think about the lack of talent at RB the Chiefs have, how good they would be with an elite RB, and the fact that Swift is our 19th overall player and it becomes somewhat of a no brainer.

The Vikings were pretty desperate to move back to be able to get a player of need at a better value.

Detroit Lions (Via MIA, via HOU) Xavier McKinney S Alabama

I wanted so badly for someone to trade up and take McKinney, who is an unbelievable talent, to make it to 26 but nobody could or would be willing. Instead the Lions let him fall. To think they turn their 1 pick in 2020 into Derrick Brown and Xavier McKinney is pretty remarkable.

They do have a decent pair in Walker and Wilson but Wilson is a 29 year old FA. We’ll probably keep him and look to use one of our safeties to help our garbage LBs.

If you still aren’t sold call him a Quandre Diggs replacement and know that several scouts now have him above Grant Delpit.

Trading up for McKinney was a thought but we are on the verge of a pass rush crisis. Even if we can afford to keep Clowney; Ansah, Jackson, Watson, and Jefferson are all free agents in addition to Clowney and Jarran Reed on the interior is a FA.

Literally 7 of our 13 guys along the line are FAs, and 2 of the 6 remaining are only signed through 2020, leaving only Mone, Green, Christmas, and Collier.

You wouldn’t know it based on offensive production but this WR group is actually kind of terrible. Outside of rookie Hollywood Brown, I’m not sure any of the other guys pass as even mediocre. Pairing Higgins with speedster Brown in this offense is just a horrifying thought.

This isn’t meant to be a Tannehill replacement in year one but let’s face it, if we resign Tannehill it’s not so he can be our guy for 10 years. Love is said to be a little raw and in need of tutelage. Veteran Tannehill will be able to show the kid the ropes and let him take over in a year or so.

As for the lack of quarterbacks in the mock, just know that I am sticking to my board which, despite all the talk of a QB run, nobody seems to want to back it up by putting Love or any other QB’s in the top 25/32 of their boards.

Love is also having a rough start to his Senior Bowl which enhances the feeling he will need to sit which in turn will cause him to slide in the draft.

Jacksonville Jaguars (Via GB) Austin Jackson OT USC

The Jags drafted a stud RB and have let him die on an offense with no OL, no QB, and no WR’s. Supposedly he’s supposed to do everything himself.

With Chark and Minshew now adding a little something, let’s build up this OL and make this a balanced offensive attack in which Fournette can have the opportunity to be a Derrick Henry for the Jags.

David Winters, Energetic Dancer Turned Choreographer, Dies at 80

David Winters, who danced in the original Broadway production of “West Side Story” and then fashioned an influential if under-the-radar show business career, notably as a choreographer for Ann-Margret, Elvis Presley and others, died on April 23 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 80.

His brother, Marc, said the cause was congestive heart failure.

Mr. Winters had an energetic, visceral style as a dancer and later as a choreographer, evident in his work in “West Side Story” and then as the creator of dances for Ann-Margret and Presley in the movie “Viva Las Vegas” (1964) and for the 1960s musical variety TV shows “Shindig!” and “Hullabaloo.”

He developed a passion for performing as a child. Watching Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire on television, he would dance along with them. And after an NBC talent agent discovered him dancing in a show in a Manhattan restaurant, he was hired to appear on numerous TV shows and in three Broadway musicals, including “Shinbone Alley,” which starred Eartha Kitt and Eddie Bracken and had a book co-written by Mel Brooks.

Jerome Robbins, the celebrated ballet and Broadway choreographer, had seen “Shinbone Alley” during its brief run in the spring of 1957 and invited Mr. Winters to try out for “West Side Story,” the innovative musical about two warring New York gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. After one audition, Leonard Bernstein, who composed the music, wrote of Mr. Winters in his notes: “Fine dancer. Real cute.”

Mr. Winters was cast as a Jet, Baby John. He later recalled rehearsals under Robbins, who was also the show’s director as well as its choreographer.

“Jerry would bring in clippings from the NYC papers where the headlines were always about some gang members going to jail or a rumble between them, in which kids were killed,” Mr. Winters wrote in his autobiography, “Tough Guys Do Dance” (2018). “These pics and articles were put up on the board for everyone to see and to get us in the mood of the piece.”

After roles in two other Broadway musicals, “Gypsy” and “One More River,” Mr. Winters was cast by Robbins as another Jet, A-Rab, in the film version of “West Side Story” (1961). While rehearsing “Cool,” a jazzy production number in which he had a short solo that showcased his raw, emotional dancing, the dancers tossed their kneepads into trash cans and set them on fire, requiring firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

“Us guys from New York City, we were all wise guys,” Mr. Winters wrote, adding, “There was no controlling us.”

By 1964 he had moved to Los Angeles, where he acted in television series like “Perry Mason” and “77 Sunset Strip” and began teaching dance. One student was Ann-Margret, whose role in the film version of the musical “Bye Bye Birdie” (1963) had made her a star. By his account, she insisted that he choreograph “Viva Las Vegas,” in which she was to co-star with Presley. Her steamy dancing while Presley sang “C’mon Everybody” was a highlight of the movie.

He went on to choreograph several more of Ann-Margret’s films as well as her 1967 Las Vegas stage act and two television specials, and he choreographed three other Presley movies.

“David was one of the greatest dancers and choreographers that I have ever known,” Ann-Margret said in an email after his death. “He moved like a panther.”

He was hired to choreograph “Shindig!,” a new musical variety show on ABC featuring leading pop acts, in 1964. He moved to “Hullabaloo,” a rival show on NBC, the next year. His dance troupe there included Donna McKechnie, who would win the 1976 Tony Award for best actress in a musical for her role in “A Chorus Line,” and Michael Bennett, who won a Tony for choreographing the same show.

“David had his own style — which was an extension of Robbins’s,” Ms. McKechnie said in a telephone interview. “It was sexy, strong and very fluid, but he didn’t over-choreograph.” She added, “He helped us women step up and have that kind of strength as dancers.”

Mr. Winters was nominated for Emmy Awards for “Movin’ With Nancy” (1967), a TV special starring Nancy Sinatra, and “Ann-Margret: From Hollywood With Love” (1969). He was later the executive producer of “Timex All-Star Swing Festival,” which won a Peabody Award in 1972.

He was also credited by Gary Smith, the producer of “Hullabaloo,” with helping to create the goofy arm-and-leg flailing dance called “the Freddie” for the British band Freddie and the Dreamers.

Mr. Winters was born David Weizer on April 5, 1939, in London. He emigrated to the United States with his parents when he was 9. His father, Samuel, was a furrier in England; his mother, Sadie (Gittelmacher) Weizer, was a vaudeville performer. After settling in Brooklyn, they opened a candy store.

David loved dancing from an early age. He sang and danced for his shoeshine customers on the Coney Island boardwalk. He learned to tap and attended a theatrical school run by an old-time hoofer, Charlie Lowe.

After the NBC talent agent saw the 10-year-old David dance at Zimmerman’s Hungarian restaurant, he was cast in a 1949 episode of “The Big Story,” a series that dramatized newspaper articles. He was later seen on Milton Berle and Perry Como’s variety shows.

By the late 1960s, his career was moving in multiple directions. For television, he directed episodes of “The Monkees,” produced specials starring Raquel Welch, the 5th Dimension and others, and made a documentary about auto racing hosted by Paul Newman.

And in 1975, he co-produced, directed and choreographed “Welcome to My Nightmare,” a concert film version of the shock-rock singer Alice Cooper’s stage show.

“He saw the potential of merging hard-rock Alice Cooper with theater,” Mr. Cooper said on Twitter after Mr. Winters’s death. “We chose him as director/choreographer because he portrayed A-Rab in the classic film ‘West Side story.�� That film was a huge influence on us as a band.”

Mr. Winters was married and divorced at least three times. He also had a romantic relationship in the 1970s with Linda Boreman, who as Linda Lovelace had been the star of the pornographic film “Deep Throat” (1972).

He produced a stage play in which Ms. Boreman starred, “Pajama Tops,” and a campy satirical film, “Linda Lovelace for President” (1976).

“When I was with David, I had an awesome time,” she told the writer Eric Danville for his book “The Complete Linda Lovelace” (2001). “I went to see my first play. I saw Richard Chamberlain in ‘Cyrano de Bergerac.’ I saw ‘Grease’ in Manhattan. I saw the Alvin Ailey dancers.”

Ms. Boreman died after being injured in a car accident in 2002.

Over the last 30 years Mr. Winters worked primarily as a producer, largely of action-oriented movies with titles like “Born Killer,” “Rapid Fire” and “Body Count.”

But his final film was a return to his early years: “Dancin’: It’s On!” (2015), a romance built around a dance competition starring winners and runners-up from the TV series “So You Think You Can Dance.” He directed, produced and choreographed the movie.

While filming it in Panama City Beach, Fla., in 2013, he experienced breathing problems, which led to a diagnosis of congestive heart failure and triple bypass surgery.

In addition to his brother, Mr. Winters, who died in a Fort Lauderdale hospital, is survived by his daughter, Romé Bernstein; his sons, Alexander and Jonathan; a stepson, James; and a granddaughter.

Ms. McKechnie saw Mr. Winters last year when she was performing at a cabaret in Miami Beach.

“He could be strong and tough,” she said, “but there was a real sweetness about him. He was jovial, and his face and eyes were still so expressive.”

Liz: According to Reddington, her real name is Gina Zanetakos. Nearly a year ago, she reached out to him as Shubie Hartwell. She wanted Red to broker a deal to assassinate a supreme court judge who was the swing vote in a case that could have cost her corporate clients billions.

Episode 1x6 took place October/November of 2013, which places Gina reaching out to Red at the end of 2012.

Red: Several years ago, it came to my attention that somebody was meddling in my business. To protect myself and my interests, I inventoried my vulnerabilities.

Several, meaning six - given they started years prior to the Campolongo Incident in 2010. What I do not believe, is that Red inventoried his vulnerabilites in 2008, but chose to wait an entire year before hiring Tom to watch over Liz. I believe he would’ve hired Tom that same year. I also have a hard time believing Tom had been sleeping with Liz for almost 6 months, and Red knew nothing of it. There was no given time frame between Red hiring Tom and him actually getting romantically involved with Liz. Being a friend of a friend is different than dating. Once they started dating, it was their 3rd or 4th date when things got intimate. As Red stated, he should've removed Tom, but he simply fired him. So basically what I’m saying is, if Tom and Liz first met in July of 2010, then Tom got fired in 2010.

Red: I’ve been monitoring Tom since he entered your life. About a year ago, I discovered that he had purchased three passports from a trusted forger I use in Warsaw.

1x18 took place around April of 2014, which places Tom getting those passports issued around the same time in 2013 "about a year ago."

Reddington made a move, hiring Tom to watch over Liz just like Berlin knew he would. Red protecting his vulnerabilities. Basically, Berlin attacked Red’s business in order to locate him and learn of any weaknesses.

Berlin: No one knows how he did it, but he did - some say that he carved a knife from one of his daughter’s bones and slaughtered all the men that had held him captive for so many years.

Liz: The man you killed wasn’t Berlin. Red: Yes, I know. Liz: You know? How? Red: He spoke of Beirut 2010, the Campolongo Incident. An unfortunate mess, but Berlin’s attacks on my business started years earlier. The moment he said it, I knew.

Red: When I learned that your relationship had become intimate, I fired him. I should’ve removed him, but you were already in love with him.

This "non-removal" of Tom basically allowed for his continued relationship with Liz. We don't know how long Tom acted as a friend to Liz when Berlin hired him.

Tom: You know, that day at the hospital, the day Sam died - I think about that day a lot. I worked for you two years - we never met. You were always this shadow, moving from place to place. Talked about, but never seen.

This sounds quite similar, doesn't it? Tom's "shadow" to Berlin's "ghost." Tom's "moving from place to place" to Berlin's "From Barcelona to Melbourne to Stockholm." Tom's "Talked about, but never seen." (never "seen" because he was like a "ghost") to Berlin's "Heard rumors." Sounds like Tom knew as Berlin did all the while he was searching for Red, as Tom stated to Jessie in 1x21 -

Tom: But the man that you work for - he’s very careful. He’s cautious. He’s controlled. He’s ruthless. I know all that ’cause I followed him for years.

Lucy Brooks aka Jolene Parker As Tom stated in their 1x16 shared scene, she was not his handler for Berlin. Same with Craig in Milton Bobbit’s episode: “I’m the one who is accountable to Berlin.” In Ivan’s episode, which takes place in 2014, Liz stated: “Two years ago, her parole officer in Santa Fe reported her missing. Hasn’t been seen since.” So Jolene went missing in 2012. Dialogues from Cowboy, Red, and Jolene hand us events and timeline. These dialogues show us that Jolene was assigned by Berlin to track Red, then was sidelined from that to check in on Tom.

Red: She’s already faked her death to elude me. Now she’s back. I want you to tell me everything you can about where she’s been, what she’s been up to.

Cowboy: The last six months, she’s been in Havana (Frederick Barnes' episode), Port Au Prince (The Stewmaker's episode), Miami (General Ludd's episode), various aliases. Last September, she was in Prague.

Prague timeline is placed in the same month Red turned himself into the FBI. It also places Jolene around The Kingmaker storyline. This means that The Kingmaker was likely a move made by Berlin after Jolene gathered intel from Red’s visit with Emil Dusek. Red and Niko shared a conversation about this at the pool.

Tom: And now it’s been two years, and I’ve heard nothing. Jolene: We sent word four months ago. Tom: Four months ago, I had to go dark because Reddington sent a psychopath with a knife into my house.

William Esper once said that, “Actors think more with their hearts than with their heads.” Such is the case with professional actor Kate Levering. She puts her whole heart into all that she does, particularly when it comes to her career. Having conquered both the big and small screen in addition to Broadway, Levering is currently seen every Sunday on the hit series Drop Dead Diva. Don’t worry… she’s not the hardcore bitch that she plays on the show. She’s actually a friendly, family-oriented, down-to-earth chick who’s not all wrapped up into the Hollywood scene. If you don’t believe me, read here for yourself.

Let’s dive right in… You’ve had guest spots on so many prominent TV series’ including Las Vegas, Ghost Whisperer, CSI: Miami, and countless others. What other hit shows from your resume can you tell me about?

Let's see...Cashmere Mafia was a super fun, but short-lived television show that unfortunately died because of the writers’ strike. A series called Kevin Hill. LOTS of guest star roles, and obviously Drop Dead Diva for the last 3 years.

I understand you originally got your start in theatre and Broadway. Tell me about it.

I started dancing professionally when I was 13 years old. By the time I was fifteen, I was doing a production of West Side Story in Europe and starting to leave school a lot to perform. I actually missed my high school graduation because I was performing in Boston, which kinda makes me sad when I think about it now. Musical theater was my first love and so moving to New York to pursue Broadway after I graduated high school was a no brainer...it was the natural next step for me.

Is Broadway still on your mind or are you more focused on TV and film?

I've taken a very long break from performing on stage. I did six Broadway shows in the eight years I lived in New York...my body needed a break! Now that I've been away for so long I definitely have an itch to come back. The high of performing live is a craving that never goes away for me.

Are there any Broadway roles out there right now that you would love to take on?

Roxie Hart (in Chicago) is a dream role for me. I gotta get my agents on that! Also, they are about to revive Annie. I think I could play Grace Farrel.

I bet! So, let’s talk about movies. What was your experience on Like Dandelion Dust? I see it won some cool awards.

Like Dandelion Dust was a labor of love, no question. A lot of people poured their hearts and souls into making that movie, including all the actors. The acting was highly emotional all the time, so for me, I lived in a pretty dark space for the month that I shot...after the movie wrapped it took me a bit of time to emerge from that place. I'm really proud of that film. Everyone's love of the project shows on the screen.

Let’s talk about your role on the TV show Drop Dead Diva as Kim Kaswell. I hear Kim is quite the tough cookie.

Ha! Yes, Kim can definitely be a bitch.

Well, other than her pure bitchiness, what do you feel your character brings to the show?

Kim plays many roles. She can show up as the antagonist, the sassy, sexy opportunist/manipulator, a shark in the courtroom, and, as of recently, we've been seeing a much softer side to her. She had her heart broken at the end of last season, so that kind of cracked her wide open.

So, other than reading a “How To” book on being a bitch, what went into creating the character of Kim for you personally?

I was on another law show for a season, so I was familiar with the procedural feel of spending days at a time shooting in a courtroom...those are loooong days! Personally, I actually sat in a courtroom for a month with a family member and was intimately involved in a trial. I can say this: TV cases are much more exciting than real life.

I guess I’ll just stick to Judge Judy for my next court visit then, huh? So what’s life like on the set of the show?

I love going to work every day. Soup to nuts, I love everyone who works on our show...our crew is amazing, our cast gets along incredibly well. Overall, I'd say there is a lot of laughter. It's just a fun and safe environment to be creative in.

How about the behind-the-scenes? What’s life like with the cast off-set?

We are all great friends. We shoot on location in Georgia, and it's kind of like being at summer camp for five months. We're all away from our homes and significant others. The result is that we end up spending 24/7 with each other. We work all day together, go eat dinner, study our scripts, and hang out on the weekends. I think the chemistry of our relationships off-screen translates to the work. It's kind of genius really...throw a bunch of insecure actors into an environment where they're isolated and don't really know anyone and watch them grasp onto each other, and only focus on work.

Well, tell me about when you’re away from the cast. What’s daily life like for you outside work?

I spend a lot of time with my dog, my family, and my friends. I live between Newport Beach and LA, so you'll rarely catch me in LA as a part of "the scene". The game of Hollywood has never appealed to me, so I tend to stay as far away as I can. When I'm not working I have a totally different life and am constantly traveling. I actually leave for Africa on Friday!

Africa?! Wow! You’ll have to tell me all about that trip! So, with all your traveling, work, etc., do you have much time to actually watch any of the shows you’ve been on?

I always try to watch Drop Dead Diva every Sunday. When we're in Atlanta the cast will try to watch it together. For me, it's nice to see the result of those thirteen-hour shooting days. People might be amazed to know that it takes eight, approximately thirteen-hour days to make 45 minutes of television! Plus, it's nice to celebrate everyone's work.

Are you one of those people who cringe watching themselves onscreen or do you love every moment?

I have been known to get up and walk out of a room, yes. There are times when I'm proud of my choices and times when I cringe, moan, and groan. It's part of being an actor...the performance is rarely just what you want it to be.

Sammy Davis Jr.

Samuel George "Sammy" Davis Jr. (December 8, 1925 – May 16, 1990) was an American entertainer. Primarily a dancer and singer, he was also an actor of stage and screen, comedian, musician, and impressionist, noted for his impersonations of actors, musicians and other celebrities. At the age of 3, Davis began his career in vaudeville with his father and Will Mastin as the Will Mastin Trio, which toured nationally. After military service, Davis returned to the trio. Davis became an overnight sensation following a nightclub performance at Ciro's (in West Hollywood) after the 1951 Academy Awards. With the trio, he became a recording artist. In 1954, he lost his left eye in a car accident, and several years later, he converted to Judaism.

Davis's film career began as a child in 1933. In 1960, he appeared in the Rat Pack film Ocean's 11. After a starring role on Broadway in 1956's Mr Wonderful, he returned to the stage in 1964's Golden Boy. In 1966 he had his own TV variety show, titled The Sammy Davis Jr. Show. Davis's career slowed in the late 1960s, but he had a hit record with "The Candy Man" in 1972 and became a star in Las Vegas, earning him the nickname "Mister Show Business".

Davis was a victim of racism throughout his life, particularly during the pre-Civil Rights era, and was a large financial supporter of the Civil Rights movement. Davis had a complex relationship with the black community, and drew criticism after physically embracing President Richard Nixon in 1972. One day on a golf course with Jack Benny, he was asked what his handicap was. "Handicap?" he asked. "Talk about handicap. I'm a one-eyed Negro Jew." This was to become a signature comment, recounted in his autobiography, and in countless articles.

After reuniting with Sinatra and Dean Martin in 1987, Davis toured with them and Liza Minnelli internationally, before he died of throat cancer in 1990. He died in debt to the Internal Revenue Service, and his estate was the subject of legal battles.

Davis was awarded the Spingarn Medal by the NAACP and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy Award for his television performances. He was the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 1987, and in 2001, he was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Early life

Samuel George Davis Jr. was born on December 8, 1925, in the Harlem section of Manhattan in New York City, the son of entertainer and stage performer, Sammy Davis Sr., an African-American entertainer, and Elvera Sanchez, an Afro-Cuban tap dancer. During his lifetime, Davis stated that his mother was Puerto Rican and born in San Juan. However, in the 2003 biography In Black and White, author Wil Haygood writes that Davis's mother was born in New York City to parents of Cuban, Afro-Cuban, and African-American descent, and that Davis claimed he was Puerto Rican because he feared anti-Cuban backlash would hurt his record sales.

Davis's parents were vaudeville dancers. As an infant, he was reared by his paternal grandmother. When he was 3 years old, his parents separated. His father, not wanting to lose custody of his son, took him on tour.

Davis learned to dance from his father and his "uncle" Will Mastin, who led the dance troupe his father worked for. Davis joined the act as a child and they became the Will Mastin Trio. Throughout his career, Davis included the Will Mastin Trio in his billing. Mastin and his father shielded him from racism. Snubs were explained as jealousy, for instance. When Davis served in the United States Army during World War II, however, he was confronted by strong racial prejudice. He later said: "Overnight the world looked different. It wasn't one color any more. I could see the protection I'd gotten all my life from my father and Will. I appreciated their loving hope that I'd never need to know about prejudice and hate, but they were wrong. It was as if I'd walked through a swinging door for 18 years, a door which they had always secretly held open." At age 7 Davis played the title role in the film Rufus Jones for President, in which he sang and danced with Ethel Waters Davis lived for several years in Boston's South End, and reminisced years later about "hoofing and singing" at Izzy Ort's Bar & Grille.

Career

During service in World War II, the Army assigned Davis to an integrated entertainment Special Services unit and he found that the spotlight lessened the prejudice. Even prejudiced white men admired and respected his performances. "My talent was the weapon, the power, the way for me to fight. It was the one way I might hope to affect a man's thinking," he said.

After his discharge, Davis rejoined the family dance act, which played at clubs around Portland, Oregon. He also recorded blues songs for Capitol Records in 1949, under the pseudonyms Shorty Muggins and Charlie Green.

On March 23, 1951, the Will Mastin Trio appeared at Ciro's as the opening act for headliner Janis Paige. They were only to perform for 20 minutes but the reaction from the celebrity-filled crowd was so enthusiastic, especially when Davis launched into his impressions, that they performed for nearly an hour, and Paige insisted the order of the show be flipped.

He began to achieve success on his own and was singled out for praise by critics, releasing several albums. This led to Davis being hired to sing the title track for the Universal Pictures film Six Bridges to Cross in 1954, and later to his starring role in the Broadway play Mr. Wonderful in 1956.

In 1959, Davis became a member of the Rat Pack, led by his friend Frank Sinatra, which included fellow performers Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford, a brother-in-law of John F. Kennedy. Initially, Sinatra called the gathering "the Clan", but Davis voiced his opposition, saying that it reminded people of the Ku Klux Klan. Sinatra renamed the group "the Summit", but the media referred to them as the Rat Pack, the name of its earlier incarnation led by Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. The group made several movies together, including the original version of Ocean's 11 (1960), Sergeants 3 (1962), and Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964), as well as many joint stage appearances in Las Vegas and elsewhere.

Davis was a headliner at The Frontier Casino in Las Vegas, but he was required (as were all black performers in the 1950s) to lodge in a rooming house on the west side of the city, instead of in the hotels as his white colleagues did. No dressing rooms were provided for black performers, and they had to wait outside by the swimming pool between acts. Davis and other black artists could entertain, but could not stay at the hotels where they performed, gamble in the casinos, or dine or drink in the hotel restaurants and bars. Davis later refused to work at places which practiced racial segregation.

In 1964, Davis was starring in Golden Boy at night and shooting his own New York-based afternoon talk show during the day. When he could get a day off from the theater, he would be recording new songs in the studio, or performing live, often at charity benefits as far away as Miami, Chicago, and Las Vegas, or doing television variety specials in Los Angeles. Davis knew he was cheating his family of his company, but he could not help himself; as he later said, he was incapable of standing still.

Although he was still a draw in Las Vegas, Davis's musical career had sputtered by the late 1960s, although he had a No. 11 hit (#1 on the Easy Listening singles chart) with "I've Gotta Be Me" in 1969. His effort to update his sound and reconnect with younger people resulted in his signing with the Motown record label. Though his deal with them to have his own label with the company fell through, Sammy had an unexpected #1 hit with "The Candy Man" after he signed with MGM Records in 1972. Although he did not particularly care for the song and was chagrined that he was now best known for it, Davis made the most of his opportunity and revitalized his career. Although he enjoyed no more Top 40 hits, he did enjoy popularity with his 1976 performance of the theme song from the Baretta television series, "Baretta's Theme (Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow)" (1975–1978), which was released as a single (20th Century Records 2282). He occasionally landed television and film parts, including major parts on the television show The Rifleman on two different episodes, and cameos on I Dream of Jeannie, All in the Family (during which he famously kisses Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor) on the cheek) and, with wife Altovise Davis, on Charlie's Angels. In the 1970s, he appeared in commercials in Japan for Suntory whiskey.

On December 11, 1967, NBC broadcast a musical-variety special titled Movin' with Nancy. In addition to the Emmy Award-winning musical performances, the show is notable for Nancy Sinatra, daughter of Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis Jr. greeting each other with a kiss, one of the first black-white kisses in U.S. television history.

Davis had a friendship with Elvis Presley in the late 1960s, as they both were top-draw acts in Vegas at the same time. Davis was in many ways just as reclusive during his hotel gigs as Elvis, holding parties mainly in his penthouse suite, and Elvis went to them occasionally. Davis sang a version of Presley's song "In the Ghetto" and made a cameo appearance in Presley's concert film Elvis: That's the Way It Is. One year later, he made a cameo appearance in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever, but the scene was cut.

In Japan, Davis appeared in television commercials for coffee, and in the United States, he joined Sinatra and Martin in a radio commercial for a Chicago car dealership.

On May 27–28, 1973, Davis hosted (with Monty Hall) the first annual, 20-hour Highway Safety Foundation telethon. Guests included Muhammad Ali, Paul Anka, Jack Barry, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Ray Charles, Dick Clark, Roy Clark, Howard Cosell, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Joe Franklin, Cliff Gorman, Richie Havens, Danny Kaye, Jerry Lewis, Hal Linden, Rich Little, Butterfly McQueen, Minnie Pearl, Boots Randolph, Tex Ritter, Phil Rizzuto, The Rockettes, Nipsey Russell, Sally Struthers, Mel Tillis, Ben Vereen, Lawrence Welk, and many more. It was a financial disaster. The total amount of pledges was $1.2 million. Actual pledges received were $525,000.

Davis was a fan of daytime soap operas, particularly the shows produced by the American Broadcasting Company. This led to a cameo appearance on General Hospital and a recurring role as character Chip Warren on One Life to Live, for which he received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 1980. He was also a game show fan, appearing on the ABC version of Family Feud in 1979. He appeared on Tattletales with his third wife, Altovise Davis, in the 1970s. He made a cameo during an episode of the NBC version of Card Sharks in 1981.

In addition to American soaps, he was also a huge fan of the Australian show Prisoner: Cell Block H. Davis wanted to make an appearance in Prisoner, but the show ended (in 1986) before this could be arranged.

Davis was an avid photographer who enjoyed shooting pictures of family and acquaintances. His body of work was detailed in a 2007 book by Burt Boyar, named Photo by Sammy Davis, Jr. "Jerry [Lewis] gave me my first important camera, my first 35 millimeter, during the Ciro's period, early '50s," Boyar quotes Davis. "And he hooked me." Davis used a medium format camera later on to capture images. Again quoting Davis, "Nobody interrupts a man taking a picture to ask ... 'What's that nigger doin' here?'" His catalog includes rare photos of his father dancing onstage as part of the Will Mastin Trio and intimate snapshots of close friends Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, James Dean, Nat "King" Cole, and Marilyn Monroe. His political affiliations also were represented, in his images of Robert Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. His most revealing work comes in photographs of wife May Britt and their three children, Tracey, Jeff and Mark.

Davis was an enthusiastic shooter and gun owner. He participated in fast-draw competitions; Johnny Cash recalled that Davis was said to be capable of drawing and firing a Colt Single Action Army revolver in less than a quarter of a second. Davis was skilled at fast and fancy gunspinning, and appeared on television variety shows showing off this skill. He also demonstrated gunspinning to Mark on The Rifleman in "Two Ounces of Tin." He appeared in Western films and as a guest star on several "Golden Age" television Westerns.

Personal life

Car accident and conversion to Judaism

Davis nearly died in an automobile accident on November 19, 1954, in San Bernardino, California, as he was making a return trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. In 1953, he had struck up a friendship with comedian and host Eddie Cantor, who gave him a mezuzah. Instead of putting it by his door, as a traditional blessing, Davis would wear it around his neck as a good luck charm. The only time he forgot it was the night of the accident. The accident occurred at a fork in U.S. Route 66 at Cajon Boulevard and Kendall Drive (34.2072°N 117.3855°W / 34.2072; -117.3855). Davis lost his left eye to the bullet-shaped horn button (a standard feature in 1954 and 1955 Cadillacs) as a result. His friend, actor Jeff Chandler, said he would give one of his own eyes if it would keep Davis from total blindness. Davis wore an eye patch for at least six months following the accident. He was featured with the patch on the cover of his debut album and appeared on What's My Line? wearing the patch (March 13, 1955). Later, he was fitted for a glass eye, which he wore for the rest of his life.

While in San Bernardino's Community Hospital, Cantor told him about the similarities between the Jewish and black cultures. Prompted by this conversation, Davis—who was born to a Catholic mother and Protestant father—began studying the history of Jews. He formally converted to Judaism several years later, in 1961. One passage from his readings (from the book A History of The Jewsby Abram L. Sachar), describing the endurance of the Jewish people, intrigued him in particular: "The Jews would not die. Three millennia of prophetic teaching had given them an unwavering spirit of resignation and had created in them a will to live which no disaster could crush." The accident marked a turning point in Davis's career, taking him from a well-known entertainer to a national celebrity.

Marriages

In 1957, Davis was involved with Kim Novak, a young actress under contract to Columbia Pictures. The head of Columbia studio, Harry Cohn, was worried about the negative effect this would have on the studio because of the prevailing taboo against miscegenation. He called his friend, mobster John Roselli, who was asked to tell Davis that he had to stop the affair with Novak. Roselli arranged for Davis to be kidnapped for a few hours to throw a scare into him. His hastily arranged and soon-dissolved (after nine months) marriage to black dancer Loray White in 1958 was an attempt to quiet the controversy. In a 2014 BBC documentary, it was disclosed that Cohn arranged for Davis to be threatened with having his other eye put out or his leg broken if he did not marry a black woman within 48 hours. At his wedding celebration he became so inebriated that his friend, Arthur Silber, put him to bed. Upon checking later, Silber caught him holding a loaded pistol to his head. The marriage to Loray White was never consummated, Davis having offered to pay her $10,000 to enter into a sham marriage.

In 1960, Davis caused controversy again when he married white Swedish-born actress May Britt. Davis received hate mail while starring in the Broadway adaptation of Golden Boy during 1964–1966 (for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor). At the time Davis appeared in the play, interracial marriages were forbidden by law in 31 states (but were legal in New York), and only in 1967 were those laws ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States. Davis and Britt had one daughter Tracey and adopted two sons. Davis performed almost continuously and spent little time with his wife. They divorced in 1968, after Davis admitted to having had an affair with singer Lola Falana. That year, Davis started dating Altovise Gore, a dancer in Golden Boy. They were married on May 11, 1970, by the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Kathy McKee replaced Altovise in Davis's nightclub act. They adopted a son, Manny, in 1989. Davis and Altovise remained married until his death in 1990.

Political beliefs

Davis was a registered Democrat and supported John F. Kennedy's 1960 election campaign as well as Robert F. Kennedy's 1968 campaign.

However, he became a close friend to President Richard Nixon and publicly endorsed him at the 1972 Republican National Convention. Davis also made a USO tour to South Vietnam at Nixon's request. Previously, Davis had won Nixon's respect with his participation in the Civil Rights Movement. Nixon invited Davis and his wife, Altovise, to sleep in the White House in 1973, the first time African Americans were invited to do so. The Davises spent the night in the Queens' Bedroom.

Davis was a long-time donor to the Reverend Jesse Jackson's Operation PUSH organization. Jackson also performed Davis's wedding.

Cancer and death

In August 1989, doctors found a tumor in Davis' throat. Davis died in Beverly Hills, California, on May 16, 1990, aged 64, of complications from throat cancer. Earlier, when he was told that surgery (laryngectomy) offered him the best chance of survival, Davis replied he would rather keep his voice than have a part of his throat removed; he subsequently was treated with a combination of chemotherapy and radiation. However, a few weeks prior to his death, his entire larynx was removed during surgery. He was interred in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Garden of Honor, Lot 5774, Space 1 in Glendale, California, next to his father and Will Mastin.

On May 18, 1990, two days after Davis's death, the neon lights of the Las Vegas Strip were darkened for 10 minutes as a tribute to him. He was survived by his wife, his daughter, his sons, his sister, his mother, his grandmother, and two grandchildren.

Legacy

Davis was portrayed by Don Cheadle in the HBO film The Rat Pack, a television film about the group of entertainers. Cheadle won a Golden Globe Award for his performance.

Comedian Eddie Griffin has made his impersonation of Davis a major part of his act.

On later episodes of The Cosby Show, Cliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby) wore an "SDjr" pin as a tribute to Davis, who, in its 5th season, made a guest appearance in the episode "No Way, Baby".

On Saturday Night Live, Davis has been portrayed by Garrett Morris, Eddie Murphy, Billy Crystal and Tim Meadows.

Davis was portrayed on the popular sketch comedy show In Living Color by Tommy Davidson, notably a parody of the film Ghost, in which the ghost of Davis enlists the help of Whoopi Goldberg to communicate with his wife.

David Raynr portrayed Davis in the miniseries Sinatra, a television film about the life of Frank Sinatra.

Davis was portrayed by Keith Powell in an episode of 30 Rock entitled "Subway Hero".

In the 1993 film Wayne's World 2, Tim Meadows portrays Davis in the dream sequence with Michael A. Nickles as Jim Morrison.

He was portrayed by Paul Sharma in the 2003 West End production Rat Pack Confidential.

In September 2009, the musical Sammy: Once in a Lifetime premiered at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego with book, music and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, and additional songs by Bricusse and Anthony Newley. The title role was played by Broadway Tony Award nominee Obba Babatundé.

Davis was mentioned in British singer Amy Winehouse's album Back to Black on the song "Me and Mr. Jones". The lyrics are as follows: "Aside from Sammy you're my best black Jew."

A black and white portrait of Davis, drawn by Jim Blanchard, adorns the cover of avant-garde rock band Oxbow's second album King of the Jews.

Midwest radio personality Kevin Matthews impersonated Sammy Davis Jr. many times on his radio show.

Comedian Jim Carrey has portrayed Davis on stage, in the film Copper Mountain, and in a stand-up routine.

Comedian Billy Crystal has portrayed Sammy Davis Jr. in his stand-up routine and at the Oscars.

"Sammy" is a song dedicated to Davis on the 1997 Gwar album Carnival of Chaos.

In the novel and its film adaptation Everything Is Illuminated, the grandfather's seeing-eye dog is named "Sammy Davis Jr. Jr".

New cinematic take on most famous U.S. tax cheat

This U.S. Department of Justice mug shot of Al Capone was taken four months before his tax eviction conviction on Oct. 17, 1931. It's 89 years, later and Scarface still gets our attention, most recently in a movie about his later days.

If there's one tiny sliver of silver lining in coronavirus self-isolation, it's that I feel a bit better about shelling out money for added television features.

During our stay-home time, the hubby and I are taking advantage of premium cable, as well as the multiple streaming platforms to which we subscribe. Right now, my viewing tastes are winning. We're watching a lot of mystery/crime-themed shows.

We just wrapped up Bosch on Amazon Prime and then flipped over to Netflix to start Money Heist. I also recommend Mad Dogs, a single-season (albeit gory) gem from Amazon that aired a few years ago.

Another cinematic Capone: In case that's not enough — the hubby and I aren't as optimistic as the White House or our Texas state officials in thinking that the COVID-19 threat is easing — I just added to my watch list Tom Hardy's portrayal of the United States' most famous tax cheat, Al Capone.

As everyone knows, Scarface was the gangland boss in Prohibition Era Chicago and allegedly behind such infamous murders as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. But he was sent to Alcatraz not for brutal crimes, but for not paying his taxes.

Yep, the notorious bootlegger went to the Big House for not paying income tax on his gains from illicit traffic in liquor. The IRS has always been serious about money, whether earned legally or via criminal methods, being taxable.

It's almost a century later and the Internal Revenue Service is still making tax PR hay out of the takedown of, at the time, the country's most wanted criminal. I'm definitively not judging. IRS investigators deserve all this decades old glory. And I writing (and you're reading) this post about Capone.

So I'll definitely spend an hour and 43 minutes watching Hardy in "Capone," which movie reviewer Brian Truitt calls "an intriguing portrait of the gangster as a dying man, waylaid by madness, paranoia and out-of-control bodily functions."

True crime entertainment shout outs: Truitt's take — Tom Hardy shines as the feral remnant of an infamous gangster in the wild new 'Capone' — in USA Today is one of two Saturday Shout Out features this weekend. The other is Bryan Alexander's fact-checking of the movie, also in the Gannett national newspaper, of What's true, what's not in Tom Hardy's new gangster movie.

Not to spoil anything, but I couldn't not mention one plot point. It seems there might be $10 million still hidden on Capone's property somewhere, but the once robust crime lord is in no real condition to remember where. Calling Geraldo Rivera!

"Al Capone at the Blanche Hotel" is romance novel, not usually my cup of tea, but one where, as one reviewer says, has its "characters move through time and reap the consequences of their choices and actions."

Plus Capone. At a real historic Lake City, Florida, hotel where the crime boss reportedly stopped over during his travels from Chicago to his Miami retreat.

You can see why I had to buy this historical novel "of lives unfolding in different centuries, but linked and irrevocably altered by a series of murders in 1930."

TRD‘s annual ranking of the top brokerages in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties

Real estate brokerages in South Florida are facing tumultuous times.

The industry is changing: Companies are being bought and sold, stocks of publicly traded firms like Realogy are falling, and disruptors such as Zillow Offers and other iBuying firms that bypass the agent are entering the market. “There are just seismic shifts that create uncertainty,” said Beth Butler, Compass’ director of new development in the Southeast. “And [agents think,] ‘Maybe I need to move. Should I look at other things?’”

With sales in a slump, the top brokerages in the region are playing offense, whether they’re adding ancillary services for customers as a way to enhance profitability, or growing by acquiring smaller firms or agent groups or luring high-profile agents by boosting incentives.

“We’re playing a game of musical chairs,” said Phil Gutman, president of Brown Harris Stevens Miami. “We’re at a difficult time. The market is just doing so-so, and when the market is doing so-so, the agents start to look around because their first inclination is that their brokerage is the issue, instead of market conditions.”

In fact, competition between brokerages for the best talent is tougher than ever before, said Gutman and others, including Butler. Compass, which has raised $1.5 billion in capital, is largely viewed as among the most aggressive in luring agents since it launched in South Florida four years ago. It now has 800 agents in nine offices across four counties after doubling its agent numbers in just the past year.

“I don’t remember this kind of environment existing at this level in the 30 years I have been doing this,” Butler said. “It really has become an environment where top agents can shop their offers and come up with whatever suits them best.”

Indeed, top producers can catapult a firm’s sales volume. The Real Deal’s latest brokerage ranking analyzed the top residential brokerages in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, based on closed sales from July 15, 2018, through June 15, 2019. TRD obtained the data from multiple sources and confirmed the sales totals with the brokerages themselves. The findings showed that in Miami-Dade, One Sotheby’s International Realty took the lead spot with $1.46 billion in volume. In Broward, Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate led the list with $1.54 billion in volume, and in Palm Beach County, it was the Keyes Company with $1.76 billion in volume.

Recruiting top agents is a key to growth. “People go into the market and grow aggressively quickly, because you have to hope to make it up in volume — that is the only way to compete in South Florida,” Butler said.

To get top agents, without a doubt, money talks.

In South Florida, agents with strong production may get a range of incentives from brokerages, including upfront cash incentives, big marketing budgets, cash to offset lost commissions from changing companies, a free assistant or a year-paid assistant, office space and/or a guaranteed number of referrals, Butler said. The overall compensation package also includes high splits, which brokerages say can range from 80 to 90 percent for the agent.

It all points to a highly competitive industry, brokers say.

“Big players are pouring a significant amount of money to grow, and grow not necessarily profitably,” said Edgardo Defortuna, founder, president and CEO of Fortune International Group.

“That creates a very significant pressure on both agents and companies,” he added. “Agent splits are at a high 80 to 90 percent for top agents, and some companies are also willing to pay a signing bonus.”

Indeed, recruiting can cause friction, and Gutman calls some firms’ recruiting methods “questionable.” Some have tried to recruit some of his agents, “claiming we were for sale. We are not for sale,” he said. “Most of us that have been here in the real estate industry for the past decade have a mutual respect and don’t actively poach each other’s agents … Recent firms that have infiltrated the market don’t show the same respect.”

The huge splits are a short-sighted incentive, according to the president of One Sotheby’s International Realty, Daniel de la Vega.

“Once some of these companies start to realize that they cannot be profitable giving away the house the way they do, they have to adjust to reality,” he said. “We all have desk costs, fixed costs, and a brokerage firm simply cannot operate at a 90 percent split structure. It’s not possible unless some of these companies start changing their split structures and offering ancillary services.”

Buying up the boutiques

While representatives from Compass say they aim to have a 20 percent market share in the region by the end of next year, other firms, too, are looking to show off their market muscle with more robust headcounts. For many, that means acquiring smaller brokerages and broker teams. One Sotheby’s International Realty, for example, is planning to make three acquisitions in the next two months, according to de la Vega.

“They are companies that have like-minded agents that specialize in luxury,” he said, declining to disclose the firms. With the acquisitions, One Sotheby’s will go from about 900 agents to close to 1,000, he said. That’s in sync with its strategy to expand into new markets, boost its digital presence and improve its market share on the general side of the business as well as in new development, de la Vega said.

Similarly, firms can grow by “fold-ins,” or incorporating teams from other firms. The Keyes Company, for example, recently brought over the Coloney Group’s 30-person team in Fort Lauderdale, said Mike Pappas, Keyes’ president and CEO. The team left Related ISG International Realty.

Fortune International Group recently brought on 10 agents from a small, independent firm, which had covered Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach. They closed their office and joined Fortune, Defortuna said, declining to name the firm.

Douglas Elliman, which now counts 1,200 agents in 22 offices in Florida, brought on David Siddons and his five-agent team from EWM Realty International in July. That same month, Elliman picked up the four-agent Cassis Burke Collection team from Brown Harris Stevens Miami. In 2014, Elliman had $300 million in sales and 100 agents; it now has 12 times the number of agents and is on track to close $5 billion in sales, including new development, this year, said Jay Parker, CEO of the Florida brokerage.

“We’re always looking to expand into the markets that fit our strategy of being in all the markets our clients want to be in,” Parker said. “So we’re looking at the west coast [of Florida], pockets on the east coast [of the state] — considering areas north of Jupiter, looking at Aventura and the Sunny Isles market.”

“We’re trying to be as vertically integrated as we can be,” he said. “It’s the way brokerages are going to survive in the future, in my opinion.”

Berkshire Hathaway already offers mortgages as well as title and property insurance, Shuffield said. Keyes offers mortgages, insurance and property management and will soon offer “post-closing” services like cable, internet, phone and security hook-ups and home improvement services for the seller through a partner, Pappas said.

Similarly, Compass has launched Compass Concierge, which fronts the cost of home repairs for sellers.

Taking care of agents by providing marketing support, social media and public relations support, as well as direct campaigns and linking agents to New York, are also important, said Gutman, whose firm has 187 agents in Miami-Dade and 100 in Palm Beach County.

At Coldwell Banker, agents are coached on sales skills and time management. The firm provides customer relationship and database management, and even offers top agents wealth management counseling services.

“Retention is as important if not more important than recruiting. If you do so much to bring them in, you want them to stay,” Butler said. “The environment that you cultivate and the culture that you create is what makes people stay. Someone can be offering them more money, but if they feel that this is the place they belong, it’s the glue that keeps people there.”

Amid changing dynamics, aside from attracting and retaining top talent, the advent of iBuying and  the specter of shrinking profitability are also expected to remain concerns in the industry.

“The challenge of profitability is shared — everybody has this concern,” Butler said. “For every dollar of commission, if you are keeping 15 or 16 cents, and you’re paying all the expenses, and rents are rising, and you have sales managers and staff, you have to grow fast to have the volume to sustain that. But you also have to identify other sources of income to supplement the brokerage income.”

TRD‘s annual ranking of the top brokerages in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties

Real estate brokerages in South Florida are facing tumultuous times.

The industry is changing: Companies are being bought and sold, stocks of publicly traded firms like Realogy are falling, and disruptors such as Zillow Offers and other iBuying firms that bypass the agent are entering the market. “There are just seismic shifts that create uncertainty,” said Beth Butler, Compass’ director of new development in the Southeast. “And [agents think,] ‘Maybe I need to move. Should I look at other things?’”

With sales in a slump, the top brokerages in the region are playing offense, whether they’re adding ancillary services for customers as a way to enhance profitability, or growing by acquiring smaller firms or agent groups or luring high-profile agents by boosting incentives.

“We’re playing a game of musical chairs,” said Phil Gutman, president of Brown Harris Stevens Miami. “We’re at a difficult time. The market is just doing so-so, and when the market is doing so-so, the agents start to look around because their first inclination is that their brokerage is the issue, instead of market conditions.”

In fact, competition between brokerages for the best talent is tougher than ever before, said Gutman and others, including Butler. Compass, which has raised $1.5 billion in capital, is largely viewed as among the most aggressive in luring agents since it launched in South Florida four years ago. It now has 800 agents in nine offices across four counties after doubling its agent numbers in just the past year.

“I don’t remember this kind of environment existing at this level in the 30 years I have been doing this,” Butler said. “It really has become an environment where top agents can shop their offers and come up with whatever suits them best.”

Indeed, top producers can catapult a firm’s sales volume. The Real Deal’s latest brokerage ranking analyzed the top residential brokerages in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, based on closed sales from July 15, 2018, through June 15, 2019. TRD obtained the data from multiple sources and confirmed the sales totals with the brokerages themselves. The findings showed that in Miami-Dade, One Sotheby’s International Realty took the lead spot with $1.46 billion in volume. In Broward, Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate led the list with $1.54 billion in volume, and in Palm Beach County, it was the Keyes Company with $1.76 billion in volume.

Recruiting top agents is a key to growth. “People go into the market and grow aggressively quickly, because you have to hope to make it up in volume — that is the only way to compete in South Florida,” Butler said.

To get top agents, without a doubt, money talks.

In South Florida, agents with strong production may get a range of incentives from brokerages, including upfront cash incentives, big marketing budgets, cash to offset lost commissions from changing companies, a free assistant or a year-paid assistant, office space and/or a guaranteed number of referrals, Butler said. The overall compensation package also includes high splits, which brokerages say can range from 80 to 90 percent for the agent.

It all points to a highly competitive industry, brokers say.

“Big players are pouring a significant amount of money to grow, and grow not necessarily profitably,” said Edgardo Defortuna, founder, president and CEO of Fortune International Group.

“That creates a very significant pressure on both agents and companies,” he added. “Agent splits are at a high 80 to 90 percent for top agents, and some companies are also willing to pay a signing bonus.”

Indeed, recruiting can cause friction, and Gutman calls some firms’ recruiting methods “questionable.” Some have tried to recruit some of his agents, “claiming we were for sale. We are not for sale,” he said. “Most of us that have been here in the real estate industry for the past decade have a mutual respect and don’t actively poach each other’s agents … Recent firms that have infiltrated the market don’t show the same respect.”

The huge splits are a short-sighted incentive, according to the president of One Sotheby’s International Realty, Daniel de la Vega.

“Once some of these companies start to realize that they cannot be profitable giving away the house the way they do, they have to adjust to reality,” he said. “We all have desk costs, fixed costs, and a brokerage firm simply cannot operate at a 90 percent split structure. It’s not possible unless some of these companies start changing their split structures and offering ancillary services.”

Buying up the boutiques

While representatives from Compass say they aim to have a 20 percent market share in the region by the end of next year, other firms, too, are looking to show off their market muscle with more robust headcounts. For many, that means acquiring smaller brokerages and broker teams. One Sotheby’s International Realty, for example, is planning to make three acquisitions in the next two months, according to de la Vega.

“They are companies that have like-minded agents that specialize in luxury,” he said, declining to disclose the firms. With the acquisitions, One Sotheby’s will go from about 900 agents to close to 1,000, he said. That’s in sync with its strategy to expand into new markets, boost its digital presence and improve its market share on the general side of the business as well as in new development, de la Vega said.

Similarly, firms can grow by “fold-ins,” or incorporating teams from other firms. The Keyes Company, for example, recently brought over the Coloney Group’s 30-person team in Fort Lauderdale, said Mike Pappas, Keyes’ president and CEO. The team left Related ISG International Realty.

Fortune International Group recently brought on 10 agents from a small, independent firm, which had covered Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach. They closed their office and joined Fortune, Defortuna said, declining to name the firm.

Douglas Elliman, which now counts 1,200 agents in 22 offices in Florida, brought on David Siddons and his five-agent team from EWM Realty International in July. That same month, Elliman picked up the four-agent Cassis Burke Collection team from Brown Harris Stevens Miami. In 2014, Elliman had $300 million in sales and 100 agents; it now has 12 times the number of agents and is on track to close $5 billion in sales, including new development, this year, said Jay Parker, CEO of the Florida brokerage.

“We’re always looking to expand into the markets that fit our strategy of being in all the markets our clients want to be in,” Parker said. “So we’re looking at the west coast [of Florida], pockets on the east coast [of the state] — considering areas north of Jupiter, looking at Aventura and the Sunny Isles market.”

Changes to AOB Law Could Impact Your Next Insurance Claim

Michelle Lau is seeing a lot of her parents lately.

"I have been here for a month trying to help my parents," Lau said.

The former professional poker player turned small business owner flew to South Florida from Las Vegas to help her parents get to the bottom of a months-long dispute with a contractor. It started in mid-October when a water pipe burst inside the Lau's home.

"It flooded the bathroom and the master and it caused mold," Lau said.

They filed a claim with their homeowner's insurance. An independent adjuster came to inspect the home and by early November, work to repair the home was underway. But months later, Michelle says repairs listed on the initial estimate from the contractor, totaling nearly $9,000, were either not done well or not done at all.

"There is no shower pan that exists in the bathroom," Lau said.

What they still owe the contractor is being disputed, but the problems may not have happened if they hadn't signed an assignment of benefits form. An AOB lets contractors get paid directly from the homeowner's insurance. Its use has long been controversial in Florida.

"What ends up happening and we have research at the triple-I to show is that the claims increase significantly in cost," said Sean Kevelighan, the CEO of Insurance Information Institute.

His group found abuse often occurred when inflated bills were denied by Insurance companies and contractors sue the insurance company in court. Using the Florida Department of Financial Service of Process Database, the Information Insurance Institute found between 2013 and 2018 AOB lawsuits in Broward County quintupled and in Miami-Dade they tripled. But in July, a new law went into effect that changes how legal fees are handled in AOB cases and adds new requirements for contractors using AOBs.

Reform advocates hope these changes will result in lower premiums for consumers, but not everyone is convinced.

"I just don’t think that most people have the financial resources that it will require to mitigate their damage fully," attorney Luis Mena said.

Mena says cutting down on AOB fraud is a positive, but the new changes come with some negatives. For example, he says that in some cases homeowners would be required to go through their insurance company to determine who can make repairs and how much they can spend. He fears this could slow down the restoration process following a catastrophic event like a hurricane.

"The carrier is going to be overloaded. People are not going to be able to get the services that they need as timely as they need it, and it is probably going to create more damage, as opposed to curtailing it," Mena said.

The new law also allows a policy holder to rescind an AOB within a certain time if a contractor hasn't done substantial work.

In Lau's case, the contractor placed a lien on their home for non-payment. They are currently disputing that lien and the additional charges.
