#it’s not oscar’s job to win the wdc for lando

Congrats to Max on his 4th title, but at the end of the day, I am a Lando, Oscar and Carlos fan, not a Max fan, so I obviously wanted one of my drivers to win. Oscar and Carlos had been out of this for a while, and it's sad seeing Lando lose his chance today, but no one can deny he's had a phenomenal season.

Look at how he started: 0 wins, one pole position, and 13 podiums; and look at him now: 3 wins, 8 poles and 25 podiums. That is 3 wins, 7 poles, and 12 podiums in 22 races this season, not counting sprints and we don't know what the last 2 races have to offer.

And let's look at the standings when Max won his other titles as of now, with 2 races and one sprint left in the 2024 season:

2021: Max won with 395.5 points and second place was Lewis, 387.5, 8 point gap, but I think we all know that in 2021, it was Max challenging Lewis on the title fight, not vice versa.

2022: Max won with 454 points and Charles was second with 308, that is a 146 point gap from Max to second place in the wdc.

2023: Max won with 575 points, p2 was Checo with 285 points, fucking 290 points separating them.

2024(with 2 races and a sprint left): there is mathematically no way for anyone other than Max to win the wdc unless he gets disqualified, which I don't see happening, so we have Max wdc with 403 points and Lando in p2 with 340, only 63 points between them.

What I mean is, Max never had a challange like this year. I'm not saying that Lando is some big unstoppable machine, and I think Max did good and kept him at distance, but if you would have looked at the standings a month ago, and even before today, you would say that Lando still had a slim chance, weather you belived in him or not, and even if that chance was small.

Maybe this is my first season, and maybe I wasn't here to see Lando before his first win, but he's not the egoistic piece of shit people say he is, and maybe he's not the best talent formula 1 has ever seen, and I don't think he will ever be, but no one can deny that he's good, and you probably couldn't do his job better than him. Statistically, he is the biggest challange to Max' wdc he's ever had(once again, 2021 was Max challanging Lewis, the championship was only his to win, because he couldn't lose it if he was never top of the standings to begin with), all in the season he's got his first "gifted" win and 2 phenomenal ones to follow with 20+ second gaps to p2, which coincidentally was Max, and Lando stood on the podium for 12 of the 22 races we've had so far this season(once again, not counting sprints), that is iver half of the races this season, and he made the 1 pole position he had at the start of the season into an 8, 7 this year.

You're blind to say he didn't have a downright amazing season, atleast compared to previous years, or that he's a bad driver, and I bet you that, had you been in his car, you would not even be close to being as good as him, let alone better. Frankly, I think the hate is just mindless, if you don't have anything better to do with your life than to hate on someone for doing their job(and it doesn't go to say that he is innocent or perfect and he's done no wrong, because I agree that he made mistakes and said and done bad things, but who here hasn't?), I recommend seeing a therapist or picking up a hobby to fill your time in a somewhat productive way.

I've said what I had to say, peace out, better luck next year and congrats to Max again, a deserved champion. Feel free to say anything you think I missed.

i’m not going to lie, my heart is feeling a lot of different things right now.

P1 — George ‼️‼️‼️‼️ fuck yeahhhhh he deserves it for sureeeee!! i loved it, i am sooooo happy for him, especially when he did the pose. it was an absolutely amazing race for him, and im so proud of him

P2 — Lewis ‼️ BRUH. dude went from p10 to p2 and reminded toto about his shelf life, didn’t he? fuck yeah, man. lewis is such a phenomenal driver and i loved him his race for him.

P3 — Carlos ‼️‼️ dude’s fighting with his own team, as he should. i was so mad at the swap positions, but he really said, “fuck your team” and performed beautifully.

charles, the radio message was just plain fucking rude. i love him as a driver, but i have been liking him less as a person, because that radio message was just not acceptable. otherwise tho, he performed well, he defended well, and im gonna give him a thumbs up of good job, but nothing more.

max is the world champion once again ‼️‼️‼️ while the championship “fight” was fun, let’s be honest, that the gap was too big and mclaren kept fucking up with strategies throughout the year. i’m really proud of him, i love him. i just don’t like his fans.

lando, my sweet baby. the car clearly did not have the pace today. i mean, we saw that. i know the antis are going to blame lando, but i really think it’s the car. neither oscar, nor lando had the pace today and it was honestly sad. he finished his race, he did good. i hope he doesn’t beat himself too much about this. he can and is contributing for the wcc.

oscar, again, the pace was terrible. i mean, the gaps just kept on increasing. i did love the few overtakes he did. wcc has always been mclaren’s main goal, so i guess, all they have to do is out score ferrari now for the last two races.

i’m super happy for the top three and max, and i’m really sad for lando, not because he didn’t win, but because we know he’s going to beat himself up for it.

i suppose it’s time to stay off socials again, because obviously, the fans are going to throw the wdc in our faces, and i’ve got exams, i don’t have time for that shit.

your take on lando is so interesting and by far the most nuanced view of him I’ve seen. I think’s it clear that he needs help managing his emotions bc some of things he says and done are baffling and the latest thing of him liking criticism proves it. he doesn’t have that champion mentality (or just seem to be in a good headspace) and a lot of that can be traced backed to McLaren. He messes up his starts every time and that could be linked with a mental barrier but ig no at McLaren cares enough to look into that???Like that’s your driver and your wdc you’re washing down the drain.

but I can’t be too suprised, bc when ppl talk about lando mh McLaren covers their ears and say Lalala can’t hear you (unless yk it benefits them)

I think I retain an enormous amount of empathy for him because prior to this year he was one of my favourites. I think he started acting strange and immature and there was this initial huge backlash but this weekend has kind of made me see things more clearly, between his actions, his words to media, how McLaren handle him, and his driving. And he really is a victim of his environment.

He IS an incredibly good driver. Before you all boo me: sure he's nowhere near Max who's currently in another league, nor is he really near Charles who would be in this championship instead of Lando if not for Ferrari shitting the bed midseason. Lando is however, on par with George, and currently probably better than Carlos and Oscar. I would happily call him the third best driver on the grid at the moment. He however, does have a problem with starts, that's just a fact. As you said anon, it's more than just experience at this point there is obviously some sort of mental block there–he's clearly going into these starts expecting to lose places. But again, like you said, McLaren obviously don't care enough to look into that. Other things this weekend just made me notice: him snapping at a journalist is not and has never been normal behaviour for him, for example, begging McLaren for that switch in the sprint and immediately catastrophising that they won't do it (pressing the radio button immediately to panic and say "I thought we talked about this") is another example of just, slightly abnormal behaviour. That coupled with his internet lurking (he liked an edit of Max a week back, and is now obviously reading his comments) paints a picture I'm not sure I like. I'm never going to assume anything, but considering he's talked about struggling with mental health in the past, I can't help but be a little uneasy on his behalf.

All of the above becomes especially true if we consider McLaren and the case of Daniel Ricciardo. As much as they love to position themselves as the champions in the sport of mental health, the whole Daniel thing remains a worrying incident they've tried their best to sweep under the rug–he never recovered his mentality in that team and instead of working with him the team were perfectly happy to throw him to one side with little regard to prioritise Lando instead. I can't help but feel with a certain sinking that this is what they plan to do with Lando and Oscar, if Lando doesn't win the championship next year. The problem is, Lando is a lot younger than Daniel was, with a lot more career ahead of him and theoretically, a much higher ceiling to reach–yet McLaren seem perfectly happy to not put any development into Lando to help him reach that ceiling. Just like some drivers need developing in the wet, or the dry, or high downforce, or reaction times, some drivers need developing in their mentality. And it is McLaren's job to recognise this if the driver doesn't recognise it in themselves, and tell them what they need to go work on. This should have been something that was flagged as a development area for Lando way before this season, even as far back as 2021 it was apparent and yet McLaren have done nothing to help him and seem happier to just, leave him out to dry.

McLaren is the true evil here and for all their attempts to appeal to a younger demographic and impassioned defences of their morality and mental health being important–I think they've proven that they would rather take the easy road than the right one, even if the right one could yield more results. Oscar struggles with other things that Lando doesn't struggle with ie. tyre management, quali but I think they will repeat their pattern of rather than developing a driver they want to discard an extremely good one in the fruitless search of a generational talent. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think its impossible that instead of taking responsibility for losing the WDC this year (because make no mistake, this is mostly their fault–from a strategy point of view to how they've managed their drivers to refusing to give Lando the support he needs until its too late) they will just try and shift the blame and indirectly pin the failure of this year on Lando in order to try and match public sentiment. Ultimately, Lando has been failed by his team and his environment more than anything and even though I'm happy this championship has (deservedly) gone to Max, I can't help but feel that Lando was not given a fighting chance by his team.

Oscar takes the contract, and the pen – Red Bull branded – and stares down at the piece of paper that could change his future, his pen hovering about the ‘sign here’ part.

There’s two paths from here. He either signs the contract and becomes Red Bull new golden boy, becomes their sole focus the way Max was for years, becomes the star. No more ‘we have no first driver’ bullshit where everyone secretly knew that there is and that it is Lando. No more Hungary’s, no more Papaya rules.

Or, he doesn’t sign. He doesn’t sign, and then other vultures will start circling. He will say loyal to McLaren, to Lando, but will they stay loyal to him? He saw Lando the other day, when exiting the Red Bull Factory. He’s talking too. They all are. Who doesn’t want the chance to win all those WDC’s?

But they chose him. They chose him first. It curls in his gut, this knowledge, an ugly kind of satisfaction he hates himself for feeling. They want him.

Red Bull is not McLaren. They’re cutthroat. If he doesn’t deliver, he’s out. But if he does.

And Lando. Lando will. Lando will live. He’s. Oscar has always known they would move on from each other eventually. They were never going to be more than stolen kisses in abandoned hallways and rushed hand jobs in unfamiliar hotel rooms. They were never meant to last.

Right?

For a moment Oscar lets himself dream. Dream of a future where it’s him and Lando, on top of the world, together, in all the ways they could be. Where he takes Lando out on dates, where they kiss in public, where they race together in stupidly fast cars.

If he signs this, he doesn’t know if Lando will ever forgive him. If he signs this, all of that will be over.

But. But if he signs this, he will have a chance at glory, at greatness. A chance McLaren never gave him.

My take on a certain part of the McLaren fandom:

Every tag I open I see parasocial behavior.

Let's just touch grass and stop it. It prevents people from enjoying the sport without cringing (and, moreover, be happy for a team's success).

Why do I have to mute stupid tags (anti...) and block people in order to appreciate F1 in peace? Why do people do not understand that this is an highly mechanical/engineering sport and not only a driving sport? Why do you not understand that drivers are humans too?

But mostly, why does it seem so difficult to root for an entire TEAM?

Like, can't we JUST collectively appreciate everything that happened today? Just for once.

Like:

1. Oscar's sprint pole was a significant milestone for him and his career. (And i would love to see him win the sprint). Although he's still a rookie, he's developing into a really good driver (just needs one or two more years to settle down). Also, he has been maturing a lot since the start of the season and you can see that in the way he speaks about the whole "papaya rules" situation (still hate it, no team orders please... Just tell him to not crash both cars.) now compared to before the summer break. (please Oscar, do not let Mark Webber's delusions get into your brain. Thanks.) Also, nice helmet. Love it.

2. Lando finally looks serene and at ease without succumbing to anxiety for other's expectations. (He also seems to not be willing to give a f*ck about WDC, good for him). I'm also really happy that he's back to eating/drinking before races and can finally enjoy driving again. (Noticed him eating an energy bar before the race in Mexico)

I also noticed that he, just like Oscar, matured A LOT this year, especially after the summer break. (Speaking of the elephant in the room: Despite the team's apparent indifference, I still think that WDC can be achieved if he chooses to. Even if they're not interested in helping him due to different priorities or contract clauses)

And no, he is definitely a First Driver. If you think otherwise you are just living in a delusion, sorry. Telemetry, just like Math, is not an opinion.

Like, look at the last qualy time he did (and aborted) before pitting.

And yes, if he gets the points he deserves a WDC, if he wants to. He IS a really good driver.

3. We are finally seeing what the upgrades were for... Especially after whatever Austin was. (And yes guys, BOTH of the drivers have had the upgrades since Austin. Oscar just got 6 upgrades out of 7 at that time... Not none. Sorry to burst your bubble.)

And no, the upgrades DIDN'T actually upgraded the car's overall performances in Austin, you can clearly see that from the data. They purposely sacrificed it for the next races. See this:

Also they took risks with the floor too in Mexico. And no, they didn't give it to Norris because they hate Piastri. They give it to him mainly because he is more experienced and can provide useful data during practice while Oscar still needs to improve this skill.

4. Also, the team has done a great job in finding a way to change the banned rear wing without compromising performance and exceeding the spending cap. Love it. (also they made a new beam wing configuration specifically for Interlagos and it, apparently, works really well!)

I'm still not convinced that we currently have the best car on the grid (Ferrari looks really solid anywhere) but it's already better than the rocky start we got in US.

Not gonna lie, the moment they sprayed the WHOLE side of the car with the flow-vis in Austin i was like "goddammit, no improvements"... So I'm relieved that it wasn't the case (better sacrifice a race than discard the upgrades package entirely like Ferrari did in Silverstone).

WCC wise, I just hope that today they don't do something silly risking two MCL38 in a multi21. (And that we get some good strategies... Hopefully... Ok, I think I need to start pray some ancient god for that.)

And what If they multi21? Well, it would be really entertaining, but I don't think Lando wants to risk points/DNF for that. It's just not his style. (Mentality again? Go to bed grandpa... And take your medicines)

Just saw a comment that if Lando wins WDC it will be undeserved and not earned… that’s one of the most stupid things I have ever read.

If Lando wins the WDC of course it’s earned. No one ever before could catch up such a big gap. The chances are also not that high for Lando, but they are there. And if he really does that it’s fully deserved. No championship was won without mistakes (we don’t talk about max his dominance). He knows very very well that he made mistakes which cost him points BUT as well as McLaren cost him points AND the first 5 races where the car wasn’t really on top. No one, literally no one, expects Oscar so move to the side for Lando. That’s not what Lando wants. It’s more about that the team will work together better and don’t battle each other on track. Simple as that. Oscar will get his podiums and if he is fast enough wins this season.

Lando completely earned all his points this season… why talking it down just because he is doing a good job ?

The driver with the most points wins and therefore is completely earned and deserved. No matter if it is Max, Lando or Charles…

People tend to forget that F1 is still a team sport. The team comes first.

there is no way people are hating on oscar for overtaking lando. there is no way.

they're racing. it's a race. mclaren have said that 481 are free to do whatever they want as long as they don't crash. lando got a good start and didn't lose the lead into turn 1. oscar pulled a move where lando would have no choice but to give the place, and they finished 2-3. no crash. WHERE IS THE PROBLEM??

"oh lando should take higher priority bc he has a chance at winning the wdc" ok 1) he got 8 points over max which is all he needs every single race to beat him and 2) do you seriously want this championship to be handed to lando?? it's a championship fight. emphasis on fight. if osc has the opportunity to get more points and get p3/p2 in the drivers standings why wouldn't he? he's a racer too, or is he supposed to sacrifice his best season yet bc maybe lando will win? lando doesn't seem to think that either. a championship takes effort, and his teammate owes him nothing, especially at the cost of his own performance.

honestly the way ppl are talking you'd think that oscar is disobeying team orders left and right and crashing into lando on the regular but he's not!! he's civilised when it comes to battles. mclaren are okay with it. lando is "okay with it", but if he's not he's just gonna have to deal bc oscar's his teammate not his servant.

It seems like most people lack a nuanced perspective on yesterday's situation and are only viewing it in black and white terms. So here's my perspective on what happened :

Oscar's Overtake: It was a completely fair but quite risky move. Could he have timed it better to reduce the danger and possibly prevent Charles from advancing to P2 and eventually taking the lead? Probably. But that doesn't make him wrong. He's a driver, and his job is to race—even against his own teammate. Without any team orders, you can't expect him to hold back when he sees a chance to take P1. If you can't accept that, you've picked the wrong sport.

McLaren's Strategic Oversight: McLaren failed to consider the bigger picture and make decisions accordingly. When it became evident that neither Oscar nor Lando could overtake Charles, the team should have focused on what's at stake: the WDC. With Lando only 70 points behind Max, they should have switched him with Oscar to maximize his points haul. Since neither of them would have won the race, it wouldn’t have been about gifting a win to another driver and it wouldn't have affected their standing in the Constructors' Championship—they still would have been P2 and P3. But it would have made a difference in the WDC. Instead, they let Lando lose crucial points and allowed Ferrari to narrow the gap between him and Charles.

Re: the Monza mclaren situation.

Oscar had every right to race. That's their job. I think Lando got a bit taken by surprise by it and that led to more mistakes on track. Oscar also did some mistakes. It happens.

What's slightly interesting is that Lando, during his interviews, still seems to be more about "the team" (at least before the race) and I think he should realize it's time to race like he's fighting for his life for the title (although I don't think mentality wise and experience wise this year is his year, more like next year).

I am slightly biased (favorably) towards Lando more ONLY because I've been following him for more and I'm more familiar with his driving style. It would be nice to see him reach his full potential. That being said, Oscar's improvement through his rookie years is AMAZING.

Lando "fans" should also remember that Lando himself said that he doesn't want anything handed to him. If anything, instead of hating on Oscar for racing, they should hope for Lando's improvement in being a bit more "aggressive" (cleanly, excuse my lack of better wording) on the track.

I think what's getting to Lando right now is the fact that hes acc in the championship fight yet his team isn't really prioritising him (I'd also be annoyed if I were him tbh), and instead they're going on abt how they want to give both their drivers the same opportunities and let them fight on track (happy abt that since I'm a tifosi and if ferrari can't win the wdc I NEED max to win) (and i just like oscar more😭).

I think what lando needs to do is just take the team's decision and get on with it instead of sulking (? Not the word I wanna use, but I also have issues with wording😭). Basically, what I'm saying is he needs to realise that if the team isn't prioritising him, then he needs to prioritise himself. If the team's telling the drivers they're allowed to race against each other, then he should be prepared and ready to attack any time oscar is in front of/ behind him.

But yeah as someone who despises the mclarens on-track, this is just really good for me tbh💀.
