After my grandma passed i learned that I'm connected to a tribe, how exactly is unclear but there's a family link, and it has me intrigued. Would this even be worth pursuing? I don't wanna like step on toes or be that person who's like "I'm 1/16th native America!!!" And I live on the opposite side of the country anyway

i think it’s at least worth considering! i will say i don’t live near anywhere near the cherokee nation in OK but lots of satellite communities do exist for many tribes. it’s definitely a decision to take very seriously.

first just know that blood quantum is a colonizer concept. you aren’t defined by your blood amount. you are defined by being accepted by your community.

and that’s what i’m personally working on. i keep my space and don’t speak over people as i’m still reconnecting. i’m trying to learn and speak the language and help protect our people in any way i can.

it’s a weird way to feel. but the more i studied my family history (it’s been years of research by now, and only so much to show for it. it’s hard.) i learned how much genocide played a role in how my family’s culture and passing it down. but i leaned about family members who did speak fluently as a first language and went to stomp dances and were active members of the community. and i realized how much of this wasn’t a choice. and i want to reconnect because of all of this and even more that feels too personal.

i still feel like a faker sometimes but i just gotta ignore it. just if you pursue it, be respectful and check your sources and do your research. but oh my god be respectful. that’s so important.

when we were studying the bible in literature class (so we have the context necessary for later works that reference the bible), i think we were at the book of jonah, and one of my classmates was studying the text very intently, and then looked up and earnestly said "professor, i don't understand the will of god"

the teacher was just like. well sadly i am a literature teacher and not a priest so i can't help you there. but if it helps, many people throughout history had the same problem.
