I think I've been touchy lately about my feelings of access to/participation in generativity. I've been feeling really overwhelmed lately by how much needs doing and how much disparate but necessary information I'm keeping in my head. I should probably get back into my thought maps for the work on the yard and house, because I think that will make it easier for me to empty my head when I'm not actively trying to work on something.
#i'm feeling a sinking recognition that i need to build a life for myself that's functional#even if it means accepting norms that i have been trying to cight for a long time in my relationships#boundaries are weird and hard and i've never been particularly good at them#but if the comversations i have with my clients are anything to go by#i have a solid understanding of how to identify and communicate them#i just don't seem to have the will to stand by my decision when push comes to shove#so people around me carry on doing what they've always done#and going all shocked pikachu face when i finally collect myself enough to remind them exactly how i feel about their behavior#oh i have no idea you felt like this!!!#why are you so angry and snappish all the time?????#i just don't have any idea what else you expect from me i already spend all my time thinking about what i expect you to expect of me?#what do you mean that's not the same thing as actually having open lines of communication with me and treating me like awhole fuckin person#i work so hard not to take my frustration out on anyone#to be kind and calm and clear when I talk#to love the things about them that i love and enjoy the time with them that i enjoy without feeling compelled to seek disappointment#asking for more or different just won't happen so what's the point of looking to feel hurt#and i do have a lot of different areas of my life that fulfill different needs of mine#so i understand that i'm lucky and should really probably accept that i am much less alone than I often feel#i just wish i had someone in my life who was both willing and able to see all of me with affection#or at least. someone who was willing and able to take on that role and who I am willing and able to trust with the role#therapy helps#my new therapist is nice and seems open and understanding#but i understand our relationship probably better than most patients given the circumstances#i know how important it is that she never be more than a facilitator of space in my life#she seems good at doing that and i appreciate having the space again#i don't really know what i want anymore but i know i'm tired of feeling unwelcome in my wholeness of self

been longing for community recently. been a long time since I felt like I had one. the pandemic squashed the ability to see folks who I used to hang out with, and after awhile I got tired of trying to keep up with friendships that felt one-sided. my coming out and subsequent divorce ended up pushing away people who I thought I had a stronger bond with. the last few years have felt like trying to finally get back up on my own two feet after having my world turned upside down.
I am genuinely grateful for my online friends. I wish every damn day that we all lived closer. I see the community and companionship we hold space for in our servers and just .... wholeheartedly ache to have it in person.
don't know why, but its just been getting to me in the last few weeks
#[static]#i think its the burn out tbh!#i want to hear laughter and see smiling faces and dog pile and hang out with the ppl I care about#i am usually really cool with solitude! and i dont need a ton of socializing#but after my husband and i lost our few friends during the pandemic its just been the two of us#and now that ppl are mostly pretending that the pandemic doesnt exist anymore its been ... hard to find ppl who give a damn#its also lowkey a little spooky to put ourselves out there as two trans ppl since we live in a somewhat red area#i just want to play dnd in person and go on hikes and make dinner withh friends!!!

I did something recently that hurt my mom's feelings and the world has come to a fucking halt about it. Everyone keeps reaching out to me to be like "hey you hurt your mom's feelings idk if you know" even though she and I have extensively talked about it and I've given multiple genuine apologies because she keeps going to everyone who will still talk to her in our family (not very many people) and complaining about me and I'm just like. Genuinely I am very remorseful that I hurt my mother but like. Where the fuck was all this energy when she was hurting her fucking children for 30+ years?
#i technically uninvited her to something#the situation is that i planned a whole birthday party for myself and then BECAUSE MY MOM PICKED A HUGE FIGHT WITH ALL OF HER SIBLINGS#like 75% of the people i invited (my aunts and uncles and cousins) canceled on me#so i canceled my birthday party but asked my brother sister and my brothers wife to still come over that night#they were only coming to see my apartment for the first time. our plan was to get kind of drunk and loud and do karaoke on my couch#my mom has seen my apartment dozens of times#ive invited my parents over for multiple casual dinners. they HATE driving to my area bc its too busy#my mom HATES loud chitchat and music and bad singing and staying up late.#all things we did that night!#and if i were confident i could extend a polite invitation that would have been turned down for inclusion's sake then i would have done that#but i fucking didnt invite her! because she would have said yes! and then she would have been policing the event and my behavior all night!#BECAUSE SHE IS A DIAGNOSED NARCISSIST WHO DOESN'T HAVE THE SKILLS TO PREVENT THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR#and i know she can't really help it. i know her life was so fucking hard. but she made MY life hard. she STILL makes my life hard.#i just wanted one fucking night to have fun with people that love me. just one fucking night! and she tried her VERY best to ruin that#even without an invite#and tbh in some ways she really succeeded in ruining it. half the fucking time was spent talking about her and how to handle this situation#and if this is a precursor to her gettting fucking worse again and going back to inpatient#im just fucking tired of it man

this site is extremely helpful with getting any of these things changed if youre still in florida and not sure how to go about it! it goes through name change and birth cert and passport change and how to do all of that. its pretty much impossible to just pick up and move especially if youre a poor or underage but youre not alone and shouldnt immediately take this as youre fucked. TransAction made a pdf of trans resources here (https://eqfl.org/sites/default/files/2023/April%202023%20TRG%20Update.pdf) but it hasnt been updated since april '23 and if youre in northwest florida theres STRIVE (https://www.strivepensacola.com/) who not only will help with fundraising for needs, help with housing and also activism if youre able and ready to fight back instead of getting told to leave at every possible chance you get. its not that easy. its never as easy as pick up and move.
Hey, trans Floridians -- you need to watch this bill. It would require your driver's license to use your gender assigned at birth. With the unofficial ban on Florida birth certificate changes (the department of vital statistics has quietly shunted all requests into legal limbo since early 2023), it's clear the state wants to document us out of existence and force people out.
I strongly recommend all trans people get passports asap, as you can still self-ID there.
https://myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Bills/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=79902
#dont let this make you feel hopeless#its hard#i know its hard#but this should radicalise you#telling everyone whos able to leave florida and do nothing will let florida continue to get worse for the people who are unable to leave#fucking stop telling people just leave just leave#fucking fight back#stonewall wasnt a sit in or a bunch of gays who walked away it was a fucking riot#even just messaging groups to see if theres anything you can do#see if strive knows people in the area you are#get together#youre not alone#we have nothing to lose but our chains

solution nine discourse on the for you page. here's my input: 👎
#yeas yes yes its a dystopia the citizens arent equipped to deal with grief yes yes#however#they did not handle it at all lol#hopefully in the patches they might. try?#that would be nice.#but like it's really hard to feel for the people considering the conditions of their continued survival etc etc. how is it much different f#rom living memory...?#like idk. sucks to be you i guess? damnn. maybe your society is screwing you over. but uh. theres nothing to work with here#the most compelling thing of the entjre area was the lightnjng sickness concept#that was then dropped like a hot potato#frustrating#i just personally cant be made to care for a place so cushioned and sanitized so as to be unaware of reality like that#theres nothing THERE#to feel for...#it needed to be thr central focus of the msq there imo. there needed to be something to force the citizens into a reallt really tough spot#not just. end of entire story. oh noo! our qphene!#and then cut to black#tuliyollal getting the siege scene was fun but i feel like it wouldve gone much farther to see s9 in peril#to further the themes of idk#people are people everywhere! even these people who do not know loss can band together and#spread the liiight of hopeee amongst each other in order to persevere#idk idk idk idk idk IDK#and i GET that the seat of imperial power never suffers the same way their targets do. thats an interesting angle#but i donf know how much i trust them to deliver on this so im just left wondering why they didnt take the easy out to reinforce the themes#edit i literally did forget that there were eeevil soldiers raiding s9 LMFAOOOO Buf also. ghe fact that i forgot. is maybe poignant

saw somebody say that bill clinton was “the most widely disliked president in recent american history”, at least until trump took office, and thats part of what made hillary so unlikeable and unelectable and like. granted. i wasnt really alive long enough to even be aware that there was a president when he was in office, let alone what his popularity was, but i DO know that in may of 2013 my ap us history teacher asked all his classes of 17 year olds who the best and worst president of the us was. my classes top 3 was washington, lincoln, and fdr and the worst president we unanimously agreed was bush. my teacher then revealed what the other classes had said and Every. Single. Class. said bush
personally i dont think clinton was the most widely disliked president in recent history in 2016. im pretty sure it was bush
#i fought like hell campaigning for fdr. i wanted someone besides who a 5 year old would pick but lincoln won ✊😔#the other classes were all washington and lincoln as well#lemme tell you. living in a Pretty Conservative Area of ca. having kids throw forth reagan as the best.#and feeling uncomfortable as you weakly put him forth as the worst. seeing everyone in the class decide that. no. BUSH was the worst was.#something. lmao. you even lost the support of the proud members of the young conservatives club my man!! the kids who said our city was too#liberal. a city that would later go on to have a mayor say no good black person has been killed by police#or try to BAN ABORTION. AGAINST STATE LAW. AND THEN TRY TO ACT LIKE THE STATE IS ATTACKING YOU. FOR SAYING THEY WILL TAKE ACTION#i will say one of those kids floated clinton as the worst but ultimately they went for bush#i will also say my opinions shifted and i think reagan is hands down the worst and if i could go back id go so hard campaigning for him#id pull out all the stops. i have a better understanding of just how evil he was i could do it this time

latest lead on our missing cat is literally someone who thinks a woman they know might have stolen him. so. losing my mind a bit.
#they don’t KNOW it’s him. which makes it hard. but they saw a cat in the window of this person’s flat. and they’ve never seen a cat there.#and they think it looks like ours. but they don’t KNOW.#BUT if we like… wander over incredibly casually… hover nearish the flat….. maybe this cat will pop up in a window again and we can see#it’s a ground floor flat in a high foot traffic area so… feels like we could do that fairly easily without making a scene???#because like. odds are it isn’t him. but also we HAVE to find out.#if we can see this cat then we’ll know. and if it’s not him then cool wonderful we can move on.#if it IS him.. hello police our cat has been stolen by a woman described as ‘volatile’#also this could just be some stupid personal dispute between the woman making this report to us and the woman in the flat.#so at this point it’s like. truly we can’t make any decisions/take any action OTHER than trying to subtly get confirmation ourselves.#like i have no intention of sending the cops in on this random lady unless we are 100% certain she has our cat.

I’ve been at this job for 3 months now and I have barely interacted with coworkers outside my area bc I got the office once a week but I am picking up on some stuff I don’t know how to feel
#when I go to office 1 I love it bc it’s much freer and nicer#plus I get to see my friend from uni and more coworkers#there’s more people to interact with but they are overall lovely#maybe one or two people that I don’t know how to talk to and they don’t know how to talk to me so we don’t talk but they seem nice#going to office 2 can be very depressing and boring#we are only 5 people plus our boss#2 of them are in my area and I feel great around them#the other 3 are girls from two other areas and one of them is a complete sweetheart#out of the other 2 it has been a bit complicated but I blame it on the fact that we hardly see each other#also they are always together#and for me it is hard to start a conversation with people tht seem to be reluctant to let me in#and I guess that’s what people feel like it’s when they are trying to talk to me#it’s not too deep or serious but it makes it awkward#and today is specially awkward bc our boss is here and one of the guys from my area is working from home#and he’s kind of the bridge btw us (new guys) and the others when we are in office 2#mariana.txt

Hi everyone. Mohammed Khalil (@ahmed0khalil) has asked me to share his story, and I’m writing on his behalf. Mohammed created the donation campaign for his little brother 6-year-old Ahmed, and he aims to raise funds to evacuate his family of 8. You can see in his blog how much he loves and worries for 6-year-old Ahmed. Mohammed is only 19 years old. This is not normal. He should have been in school, not begging for our attention to try and raise enough funds so that they can buy food, water, medicine, and a chance to evacuate to safety.
In Gaza, where the sounds of bombing blend with the cries of children, Mohammed and Ahmed's family experienced days they never imagined they would endure. Mohammed (19) and Ahmed (6) have four other siblings: Fathi, Aya, Anas and Abdullah. Aya (21) is a uni nursing student and Anas (15) is also a school student. Neither of them can study anymore with the current genocide. This war is especially hard on Fathi (23), who is blind and suffering from coronary artery disease, Abdullah (11) who is autistic and does not understand what is happening, and Ahmed (6), a small child who had barely started kindergarten before his education came to a halt.
The destruction that struck the area left them with no place to live. The sounds of explosions fill the horizon, and the homes that once sheltered them have become piles of rubble. They suddenly found themselves outside their home, homeless.
The bombing not only destroyed their home, but also severely injured Mohammed. Mohammed was sitting at the entrance of the school his family was sheltering in when three bombs were dropped in front of him. The bombs destroyed a residential tower in front of Mohammed. Dust filled the air and the resulting rubble and shrapnel fell on Mohammed, injuring him in the leg. Mohammed was so severely wounded that he could not walk, and he had to lie there, hurt and bleeding, for 2 hours before the Palestinian Red Crescent came and carried him to the hospital.
The bombing shattered the glass in the school Mohammed and his family was staying at, but thankfully the children sustained no serious injuries. Soon after, they were asked to evacuate the school immediately as there were news that the IOF were going to bomb the Abbas prison near it. And so even though Mohammed was wounded, he could not rest and wait for his leg to heal, but had to leave again with his family.
Now they are living in a small tent in a refugee camp. Mohammed told me that they had to bathe in polluted water and the place smelled of sewage and corpses. Camp life was difficult not only because of the scarcity of food, the infectious disease, and the polluted water, but also because of the psychological torture they endure. Looking at all the devastation, and how the world seems indifferent to their suffering, Mohammed told me that they, including young innocent 6-year-old Ahmed, had begun to lose hope for a better future.
Internet is unstable and often lacking in the refugee camp. Mohammed is using the precious time when Internet is available to tell me his story. I hope you will not turn away their calls for help. They urgently need donations to provide for shelter, food, and medicine, as well as to evacuate out of Gaza. Donations are coming in really slowly for Mohammed’s campaign, and I beg all of you, please, don't turn a blind eye to his story.
Mohammed’s campaign has been shared by 90-ghost and I’ve also been talking extensively with him. He is a very nice person and he just really wants to help his family survive. Please, please, help Mohammed evacuate himself, his 5 siblings and his parents! Little 6-year-old Ahmed does not deserve to live in fear of falling bombs every day, and neither does Mohammed and the rest of his family.
Really low funds! Only €1,185 raised of €50,000 target!!
Please share/reblog and donate to help a family of 8! These are children we are talking about, and my heart breaks for what they have to endure.
Please follow Mohammed and Ahmed on @ahmed0khalil to get updates on their situation!

A Guide to Historically Accurate Regency-Era Names
I recently received a message from a historical romance writer asking if I knew any good resources for finding historically accurate Regency-era names for their characters.
Not knowing any off the top of my head, I dug around online a bit and found there really isn’t much out there. The vast majority of search results were Buzzfeed-style listicles which range from accurate-adjacent to really, really, really bad.
I did find a few blog posts with fairly decent name lists, but noticed that even these have very little indication as to each name’s relative popularity as those statistical breakdowns really don't exist.
I began writing up a response with this information, but then I (being a research addict who was currently snowed in after a blizzard) thought hey - if there aren’t any good resources out there why not make one myself?
As I lacked any compiled data to work from, I had to do my own data wrangling on this project. Due to this fact, I limited the scope to what I thought would be the most useful for writers who focus on this era, namely - people of a marriageable age living in the wealthiest areas of London.
So with this in mind - I went through period records and compiled the names of 25,000 couples who were married in the City of Westminster (which includes Mayfair, St. James and Hyde Park) between 1804 to 1821.
So let’s see what all that data tells us…
To begin - I think it’s hard for us in the modern world with our wide and varied abundance of first names to conceive of just how POPULAR popular names of the past were.
If you were to take a modern sample of 25-year-old (born in 1998) American women, the most common name would be Emily with 1.35% of the total population. If you were to add the next four most popular names (Hannah, Samantha, Sarah and Ashley) these top five names would bring you to 5.5% of the total population. (source: Social Security Administration)
If you were to do the same survey in Regency London - the most common name would be Mary with 19.2% of the population. Add the next four most popular names (Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah and Jane) and with just 5 names you would have covered 62% of all women.
To hit 62% of the population in the modern survey it would take the top 400 names.
The top five Regency men’s names (John, William, Thomas, James and George) have nearly identical statistics as the women’s names.
I struggled for the better part of a week with how to present my findings, as a big list in alphabetical order really fails to get across the popularity factor and also isn’t the most tumblr-compatible format. And then my YouTube homepage recommended a random video of someone ranking all the books they’d read last year - and so I present…
The Regency Name Popularity Tier List
The Tiers
S+ - 10% of the population or greater. There is no modern equivalent to this level of popularity. 52% of the population had one of these 7 names.
S - 2-10%. There is still no modern equivalent to this level of popularity. Names in this percentage range in the past have included Mary and William in the 1880s and Jennifer in the late 1970s (topped out at 4%).
A - 1-2%. The top five modern names usually fall in this range. Kids with these names would probably include their last initial in class to avoid confusion. (1998 examples: Emily, Sarah, Ashley, Michael, Christopher, Brandon.)
B - .3-1%. Very common names. Would fall in the top 50 modern names. You would most likely know at least 1 person with these names. (1998 examples: Jessica, Megan, Allison, Justin, Ryan, Eric)
C - .17-.3%. Common names. Would fall in the modern top 100. You would probably know someone with these names, or at least know of them. (1998 examples: Chloe, Grace, Vanessa, Sean, Spencer, Seth)
D - .06-.17%. Less common names. In the modern top 250. You may not personally know someone with these names, but you’re aware of them. (1998 examples: Faith, Cassidy, Summer, Griffin, Dustin, Colby)
E - .02-.06%. Uncommon names. You’re aware these are names, but they are not common. Unusual enough they may be remarked upon. (1998 examples: Calista, Skye, Precious, Fabian, Justice, Lorenzo)
F - .01-.02%. Rare names. You may have heard of these names, but you probably don’t know anyone with one. Extremely unusual, and would likely be remarked upon. (1998 examples: Emerald, Lourdes, Serenity, Dario, Tavian, Adonis)
G - Very rare names. There are only a handful of people with these names in the entire country. You’ve never met anyone with this name.
H - Virtually non-existent. Names that theoretically could have existed in the Regency period (their original source pre-dates the early 19th century) but I found fewer than five (and often no) period examples of them being used in Regency England. (Example names taken from romance novels and online Regency name lists.)
Just to once again reinforce how POPULAR popular names were before we get to the tier lists - statistically, in a ballroom of 100 people in Regency London: 80 would have names from tiers S+/S. An additional 15 people would have names from tiers A/B and C. 4 of the remaining 5 would have names from D/E. Only one would have a name from below tier E.

# Men were sometimes given a family surname (most often their mother's or grandmother's maiden name) as their first name - the most famous example of this being Fitzwilliam Darcy. If you were to combine all surname-based first names as a single 'name' this is where the practice would rank.
*Rank as a given name, not a nickname
+If you count Mary Ann as a separate name from Mary - Mary would remain in S+ even without the Mary Anns included
~Primarily used by people of Irish descent
^Primarily used by people of Scottish descent
>Primarily used by people of Welsh descent
I was going to continue on and write about why Regency-era first names were so uniform, discuss historically accurate surnames, nicknames, and include a little guide to finding 'unique' names that are still historically accurate - but this post is already very, very long, so that will have to wait for a later date.
If anyone has any questions/comments/clarifications in the meantime feel free to message me.
Methodology notes: All data is from marriage records covering six parishes in the City of Westminster between 1804 and 1821. The total sample size was 50,950 individuals.
I chose marriage records rather than births/baptisms as I wanted to focus on individuals who were adults during the Regency era rather than newborns. I think many people make the mistake when researching historical names by using baby name data for the year their story takes place rather than 20 to 30 years prior, and I wanted to avoid that. If you are writing a story that takes place in 1930 you don’t want to research the top names for 1930, you need to be looking at 1910 or earlier if you are naming adult characters.
I combined (for my own sanity) names that are pronounced identically but have minor spelling differences: i.e. the data for Catherine also includes Catharines and Katherines, Susannah includes Susannas, Phoebe includes Phebes, etc.
The compound 'Mother's/Grandmother's maiden name used as first name' designation is an educated guesstimate based on what I recognized as known surnames, as I do not hate myself enough to go through 25,000+ individuals and confirm their mother's maiden names. So if the tally includes any individuals who just happened to be named Fitzroy/Hastings/Townsend/etc. because their parents liked the sound of it and not due to any familial relations - my bad.
I did a small comparative survey of 5,000 individuals in several rural communities in Rutland and Staffordshire (chosen because they had the cleanest data I could find and I was lazy) to see if there were any significant differences between urban and rural naming practices and found the results to be very similar. The most noticeable difference I observed was that the S+ tier names were even MORE popular in rural areas than in London. In Rutland between 1810 and 1820 Elizabeths comprised 21.4% of all brides vs. 15.3% in the London survey. All other S+ names also saw increases of between 1% and 6%. I also observed that the rural communities I surveyed saw a small, but noticeable and fairly consistent, increase in the use of names with Biblical origins.
Sources of the records I used for my survey:
Ancestry.com. England & Wales Marriages, 1538-1988 [database on-line].
Ancestry.com. Westminster, London, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1935 [database on-line].

Some folks were asking for my boiled peanuts recipe (as they feature in our game, Scarlet Hollow, and we made a big batch this past weekend), but it's unfortunately a bit difficult for me to post with lightness in my heart right now because this past weekend the entirety of western North Carolina, where Scarlet Hollow takes place, was devastated by hurricane Helene.
Towns I have been to and have fond memories of have been described as "washed away." The region is almost entirely still out of power, the water is all contaminated with repair efforts expected to take weeks, and there are hundreds of people stranded, including my relatives, as roads have been totally destroyed. My uncle sent a photo of the road near his house, thankfully his home is okay but I have to image it's going to take a while for roads like this to see repairs:
I know this photo has been making the rounds, but it bears posting for those who haven't seen it-- the main strip of Chimney Rock, before and after:
Trees, cars, buildings, everything is gone. And now all that debris is just sitting in lakes and rivers. This is Lake Lure today:
Pictures from Swannanoa, an absolutely lovely town with so much character, where my sister went to folk music camp as a teen, where mobile home parks were hit hardest-- people's houses just floated away downriver:
And of course Asheville is the town most people will have heard of. A city of 95k, completely isolated in the days after the storm. The River Arts District was still underwater as of yesterday:
People throughout the entire region are without power and transport and fuel and water and food, they've lost their homes and their businesses, and people have had to resort to hiking to reach loved ones to see if they're safe or whether their homes were just wiped off the face of the earth-- hundreds are still missing because it's been so difficult to get in contact with people in these isolated, rural communities that are now nearly impossible to get to because roads were washed away or collapsed in landslides.
I honestly don't even know where to start when it comes to relief funds or ways that people can help. I've been listening to the local radio station and it sounds like the area is in shock, people are coming in to help pick up the pieces but there is so much recovery that will have to happen that it's hard to know where to start.
This article from the Citizen Times has a list of places that are currently helping with relief efforts.
It's absolutely unfathomable that a hurricane could hit the mountains. The effects of this are going to be felt in western NC for a long time, and my heart goes out to everyone who is currently stranded or trying to get in touch with people who are.
