Groovy “My studies, huh...? This is what’s gonna put food on my table, so I’m taking them seriously.”
Home Setting “They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, you know?”
Home Transitions “I’m busy cleaning up Leona’s room right now. What? You wanna help? Man, thanks a bunch!”

Home Transition (Login Greeting) “Do you need somethin’ from me? I’ll listen if you say you’ll treat me to something.”
Home Taps “My uniform? It’s a hand-me-down from Leona. It’s a little big, but I can still wear it so it’s fine.”
“I wouldn’t mind looking after Grim if you ever need me to. How does 1000 madols an hour sound?”
“You’re hungry? If you get some ingredients together, I can whip something up for you.”
“I gotta think about what I’m going to do after I graduate and start working towards that. ‘Cause life is really long.”
“Hm, what’s up? Does Leona want something——Oh, he doesn’t? You scared me for a sec...”
Tumblr media
PE Uniform - R
Unlock Card “I’m really good at sports. At least, better than you.”

Home Transitions “Move it, move it! We’re in the middle of cleaning out the whole dorm! ‘Cause Leona never cleans this place up himself...”

Home Transition (Groovy) “The ceremony today is gonna be in the Mirror Chamber. Shishishi! You look nervous. It’s cute; it’s fitting for a first-year.”

“The chance of Leona coming to a ceremony is... about 50/50. But he’ll still come to the entrance and graduation ones.”
“The Headmaster takes really good care of the apple trees that grow on campus. Those apples all look so good.”
“Mages were pretty rare where I grew up. I bet they’d all wanna see what I look like now.”
“You don’t need to rush; we’ve got plenty of time before the ceremony. You’re so impatient.”
Home Tap (Groovy) “Your makeup’s all smudged. Alright, guess I’ll fix it for you. ...It’s fine, I’ve done this as a job before.”

“The dorm uniforms really are so easy to move in. They’re not too fancy either; it’s perfect for me.”
“We’re about to have a dorm meeting right now. What, you wanna come check it out? I mean, Leona’s kind of... It depends on how you ask him.”
Home Transition (Login Greeting) “I’m heading to the cafeteria with Leona. Wanna come too? Having more people to run errands saves me some.”
Home Transition (Groovy) “Sure, I came to this school without a madol in my pocket... but you can always find a way to handle anything as long as you’re alive!”
Home Taps “The strong and the smart are the ones who rise to power in Savanaclaw. I like how it’s an obvious system.”

lover series - daylight
Pairing: Carter Baizen x Reader
Warnings: none
A/N: this is what happens when i mention carter baizen more than once a day. also daylight just fits him as a person??? if you wanna listen to daylight while reading this, here. this was inspired by an ask i got in this blog, thank you for the idea 💕
Tumblr media
My love was as cruel as the cities I lived in Everyone looked worse in the light There are so many lines that I've crossed, unforgiven I'll tell you truth, but never, "Goodbye"
   - Get out.
   - What? - Carter looked at the blonde sat next to him whose eyes seemed to wander to everyone but to him. - Don’t be like this. You’re just nervous about meeting your dad.
   - I don’t need your help anymore or ever again. I should have done this on my own from the start.
  - Fine, if that’s what you want. - he opened the door of the limousine, climbing off the comfortable warmth of their vehicle to be greeted with the darkness and coldness of New York during the warmth. Serena, without as much as looking back at the man who had spent a full year helping her find her father, ordered the driver to keep going. Well, he should’ve known better but once again, his judgement tended to be clouded whenever dealing with pretty women.
Once again he was all alone again, nowhere to go, no one to talk to. He could just fell his parents awaiting for him to return to them on his knees begging to be taken back but at this point there was too much damage done and Carter was much to prideful to return to them. In all honesty, Carter was much to prideful to even stay with New York. After the mess that had been his relationship with Serena, no doubt the rest of the Upper East Side was gonna go after him with every single little dark secret he had, and he had plenty of those.
With that in mind Carter decided to do what he always did; start again. That’s what he always did when things went south or when the world became too suffocating. However, after doing humanitarian work and a documentary, he wondered what he could do next. Lost in how to reboot his life for what seemed like the millionth time in his young years, a little fall of rain from the sky started to wet his cashmere black trench coat. He bite his lip out of frustration. Of fucking course, that was just what he needed right now. Before he could let out all his frustrations by kicking a nearby bin, drops of water stopped falling on his coat and instead sounded like they were falling onto plastic.
    - Are you alright, sir? - a melodic, magical-like voice broke through his mind and his eyes travelled to a woman standing next to him. She was holding a plastic umbrella over him which kept both of them dry and away from the rain. Unlike him, she was dressed in a lesser quality fabric, using what looked like a blue waitress dress and some off brand white sneakers with her hair pushed into a ponytail, everything merely covered by a worn out black cotton trench coat. - Sir?
I don't wanna look at anything else now that I saw you I don't wanna think of anything else now that I thought of you I've been sleepin' so long in a twenty-year dark night And now I see daylight, I only see daylight
Suddenly, he remembered a faithful sentence from one of the movies he had seen during his youth, finally understanding its meaning. They say when you meet the love of your life, time stops. It was true, time did stopped, everything seemed to move in incredibly slow motion, he could see every single blink of the most gorgeous pair of eyes he’d ever met, hear every drop of rain hitting the plastic of the umbrella. However, the later part of the sentence was also true, once time starts again it moves extra fast, and none was that true as a honking bus drove through a puddle of water, waking them both from a dream-like trance.
     - I saw you being kicked off a car from my diner. You look like you needed help. - she pushed a few of the fly away hairs of her ponytail held together by a blue scrunchie behind her ear. Unlike the girls of Upper East, they weren’t adorned with pearls or heavy jewelled earrings. - Do you wanna come in for a bit, just while the rain doesn’t calm down?
Carter still found himself still staring at her. God, where had she been hiding his whole life? Did she just decide to pop up now that he had been truly humiliated by Serena. Serena, who was even Serena? He didn’t think he’d ever want to think about Serena, Blair, Beth. Who were any of them compared to that woman holding an off brand umbrella over his head as if he wasn’t one of the most hated people in the Upper East. In normal circumstances, he wouldn’t enter any lower ranked places but her smile and comforting aura just made him want to follow her anywhere she went. And so, with a nod, he followed her inside a small diner just in front o the place he had been so unceremoniously dumped. The place was small and empty seemingly with her being probably the last employee before closing time. Nevertheless, there was some charm on the beat up, too used black board by the kitchen window with various pie names written in beautiful chalk calligraphy.
    - Do you want to eat anything? My treat. - he wondered why she wasn’t charging, why a woman who clearly was much lower than him status wise and could clearly see he was rich offer him something. Normally people would try to quickly rip him off. - I bake them all myself. A new one every single morning.
   - You bake a new pie every single morning? - he took a seat on one of the red leathered stools by the main table. - Is this your place?
   - No, I just work here but one day I’m gonna have my own place, my own pie shop and people are gonna come from all over the world to try my pies. - she seemed to get lost in her own fantasy before opening the lid of one of the various glass pies stands to take what looked like a wild berry pie slice, serving it perfectly on a freshly washed plate. - A little wild, wild, berry pie.
  - Pardon? - he asked as she slide the plate towards him, handing him a fork at the same time.
  - The pie. - she pointed at the board. - It’s the title. Cream patisserie with some berries on traditional pie crust. I got the idea while watching a particularly steamy scene on Sex and the City.
  - You created the recipe?
  - Where do you think recipes come from? - she smirked at him. - Come on, I promise it’s not poisoned.
Carter gave her a coyly smile before sinking in his fork in the beautiful berry coloured desert, taking a piece before bring it up to his mouth. As the sweet touched his tongue, he swore like he melted away from his whole body. The taste was fantastic and Carter was certain he had never tasted anything better than that small piece of pie.
   - God, this is fantastic.
   - Thank you, I try my best. - she smiled. - I’m Y/N, by the way.
   - Carter Baizen.
Luck of the draw only draws the unlucky And so I became the butt of the joke I wounded the good and I trusted the wicked Clearin' the air, I breathed in the smoke maybe you ran with the wolves and refused to settle down Maybe I've stormed out of every single room in this town Threw out our cloaks and our daggers because it's morning now It's brighter now, now
  - Olivia? - Carter mockingly called out, looking around his hotel suit as he wrapped a burgundy red tie around his pristine white shirt. A small high pitched giggle came from behind the leather coach. With a coy smile, Carter slowly moved towards the couch. - Oh, where could my Libbie be?
Another high pitched came from behind the coach and before the three year old could realise what was happening, Carter had already grabbed her by the waist, throwing her to the ceiling before catching her in a fit of giggles, her inherited curly brown hair stuck in front of the same eyes she had definitely gotten from her mother. The little girl giggled once more, tiny arms coming to wrap themselves around her father’s neck.
  - What are you two doing? - Y/N came out from her bedroom due to all the giggling. Noticing her daughter in her father’s arms she merely rolled her eyes with a smile on her face. - I thought you were supposed to be in bed.
  - We’re just playing hide and seek. - she replied, hiding behind her father’s neck. She surely knew how to avoid confrontation. Y/N merely laughed, walking up to her husband and daughter. - Do you really need to go, mummy?
  - It’s just for a few hours. We’ll be here when you wake up. - Y/N pulled some of her daughter’s hair away from her round, chubby baby face.
  - Why can’t I go? - she pouted.
  - You wouldn’t like it, baby. - Carter kissed her cheek before handing her to the nanny who they had hired specifically for tonight. Usually Y/N and Carter didn’t hire nannies as they would rather spend time with their daughter rather than having a complete stranger. Most of the times, Olivia would either be at the pie shop with Y/N or at Carter’s firm office. However, tonight specifically both Carter and Y/N needed to attend a donators gala hosted by none other than Carter’s old fling Serena van der Woodsen. Initially, Carter had been firm on his decision not go, much too uninterested in ever speaking to her or any of her friends ever again. However, after some convincing on Y/N’s part and how he shouldn’t really care about other’s opinion and just enjoy a nice night out, he had caved in. - Trust me, daddy won’t like it either.
  - Tuck me in?
  - Okay, baby. - Y/N took over from the nanny, picking her daughter up against her hip before walking away from the main room and into the bedroom of the hotel suit. Carter took to pushing the sheets away from the mattress as Y/N laid her daughter in, puffing her pillows just the way she liked it and pulling the duvet up to her neck. - Now you be a brave good girl for mummy and daddy, okay?
  - Okay. - she nodded, holding onto one of her many stuffed animals. - Night, mummy. Night, daddy.
 - Goodnight, ladybug. - Carter placed a kiss on his daughter’s forehead before getting up and following his wife out of the hotel room before he could change his mind. His life had gone a completely one eighty every since seeing the group of people he used to hang out with during his youth. He had gotten married to the love of his life who was fiercely by his side no matter what happened, had started his own firm finally riding himself of his parents name, and had brought in the most precious daughter to the world. Whatever happened in the Upper East Side was no longer something that interested him even if he was one of the most wealthy men in New York. He didn’t want Y/N or Olivia to frequent those rotten and cruel places. They were happy in their own little bubble however, sometimes, like tonight, he had to confront the rest of the whole who seemingly still had his eyes on him.
Noticing his tenseness, Y/N intertwined her hand with his, giving him a soft and understanding smile followed by a kiss to the corner of his mouth.
 - You’re gonna be fine, you’ve done way better than everyone in that room. You didn’t inherit what you have, you built it and you should be proud of that, Car.
  - Well, you have to say that, you’re my wife. - he moved his face slightly so he could kiss her properly. - I can’t believe you’re my wife.
  - You asked me on a good day. - she looked at the engagement band stacked with her wedding band, simple in silver, nothing too big or too lavish, just something small that both of them liked.
They were both escorted into the limo with Y/N immediately cuddling up next to her husband unlike so many of his girlfriends before. In all honesty, Carter sometimes thought he was dreaming. He just couldn’t believe he was married to her and if he had told a younger self he would marry someone outside the Upper East circle he wouldn’t have believed it, yet here he was. She was a magnetic, kind, determined woman who had managed to get him out of a rut and push him to his full potential while still living her own dreams. He thought he couldn’t be more in love with her and then she gave him Olivia. He still remembered that faithful New Year’s Eve when she handed him a pregnancy test or when they had to rush out of one of his dinners because she had begun labour. There was nothing in this world that mattered more to Carter Baizen than his girls, something the rest of the Upper East didn’t really understand. However, he was happy, he was happily married, happy with his career and happy with his little ladybug.
  - Car, are you coming? - Y/N snapped him out of his daze as they reached the gala’s location. Pushing away all the insecurities he had, he pridefully walked down the stairs with Y/N by his side, catching the attention of every single person who stopped their chat to look at the “disgraced” Carter Baizen and the so called “pie girl” he had married.
  - Should we dance? - he gave her grin, offering her his hand eloquently much to her enjoyment. - I wish to dance with the prettiest lady in this room.
  - Prettiest girl in the room? - she giggled, taking in his hand while the other one held her waist. - Should I ask how many girls in this room you’ve used that line with?
  - Well, Mrs. Baizen, you’re definitely the only one I’ve used that on.
  - You better not be lying to me, Mr. Baizen.
  - I love you so much, Y/N. - he leaned down to peck her lips, not caring who was watching.
  - I love you too, Car.
I once believe love would be burning red but it’s golden like daylight

Maroon, Brick, Bronze, Sky, Teal, Violet, Lilac, Blush, Cotton candy, Coconut, and Black for Lace, Wrelia, Rhosill and Aselif
Oooh lot’s of good questions for lot’s of good kids! And by good, I mean every single one of these idiots is morally grey at best. You get a read more because it’s gonna be at least a little long. Have fun~
Maroon - What are you most passionate about?
Lace - They think for a moment, then laugh. “Well, there’s a lot of things I could say, but I’ll keep it appropriate and say the people I care about. Strair, Cue, Kvold, Ive, and others, I’d really do anything for them, and anything to keep them safe.”
Wrelia - “Oh! Oh! Yeah! My research! I put a lot of time into the study of magic, specifically necromancy. I’m mostly self taught, aside from the tips I’ve gotten from Odollumn and Trahearne, and I’m always working to learn more and expand my capabilities!”
Rhosill - “I’m not. Sorry.”
Aselif - “I’m most passionate about my poisons. It’s work I chose for myself, and that I enjoy. It helps with my job, and lets me explore new things. It’s really very lovely. Cayde is the other thing I’m passionate about. I love him, truly and surprisingly. I didn’t think I could, but I do.”
Brick - What are some things you dislike?
Lace - “People who treat public spaces like they’re private, idiots who think they can get the drop on me, people who try to use Cue to get to me. People who don’t respect boundaries. Tenor. Fire. Gods. Not having control. I can go on longer if you want...”
Wrelia - “The Elder Dragons have all been pretty mean. And I don’t really like being alone. And coffee makes me very shaky and doesn’t taste great, though chocolate covered coffee beans are pretty good. I don’t like that Mom has been trying to take on all this burden by herself, when she has so many people around her that want to help. I don’t like that things keep hurting my loved ones. I don’t like that I could lose everyone at any given moment, and that I wouldn’t be able to save them or bring them back. I really don’t like wyld hunts. I hate that we can’t stop, or the world will end. I don’t like this question.”
Rhosill - “Myself, the inquest, bandits, and my old job as an assassin, to name a few things.”
Aselif - “Let’s see, I’m not very fond of Lusus. I don’t particularly like any of the people I meet with for the court, they’re all fairly horrible, especially Tenor. I dislike many of the things the court makes me do. There’s so much more, too, but it’s a long list, and it would only bore both of us.”
Bronze - What is your favorite way to warm up when it’s cold?
Lace - “Coffee, and cuddling with Cue under a blanket if I can. That’s the first thing I did when I got back from the Shiverpeaks after finally finishing my wyld hunt. Second favorite is sharing a bed with someone exciting.”
Wrelia - “Blanket cape and baking. Embrant and I like to joke that we’re royalty, and the oven heats the whole kitchen up pretty well. Plus, we get food after we’re all warmed up!”
Rhosill - “I don’t usually need to, but if I do, then a campfire, and some hot cider.”
Aselif - “Cuddling up with Cayde is always nice. Even when I’m not cold.”
Sky - What is your favorite time of the day?
Lace - “Very late at night to very early in the morning. The wee hours, when everything is quiet, and it’s just you, the stars, and maybe some stray crickets. It’s so peaceful during that time.”
Wrelia - “Late morning! Making brunch with my wife when we both have a day off! And we laugh and joke and each food that should probably count as desert, but brunch has no rules~”
Rhosill - “It’s changed a lot over the years. Right now, it’s lunchtime.” He smiles a little. “You haven’t seen excited until you’ve seen a bunch of recruits being let out from their morning drills to go eat and hang out.”
Aselif - “Dawn, the moments before the sun rises. Responsibilities don’t exist during that brief period of time, and the sky just look beautiful. I wish I had more opportunities to be up then.”
Teal - What makes you feel most at peace?
Lace - “Quiet and solitude, or having complete and total control of a situation. Both together is especially nice.”
Wrelia - “Spending time with my friends! They’re all great people, and we all make each other feel loved and wanted and welcome! It’s a nice feeling, and it helps me forget some of the big problems I’m facing.”
Rhosill - He mimes holding his rifle. “Gun in hand, and a bandit or inquest bastard in my sights.”
Aselif - “When Cayde comes to my office to just sit with me while I work. He makes the work go quicker, and makes it easier to think. And it is also simply nice to hold him close while he gets a break.”
Violet - What is your ideal date?
Lace - “Cue and I built my house together, and we fucked in every room as we built them. I’d say that was pretty ideal!”
Wrelia - “Whenever Em pulls out the blanket fort again! We usually bake cookies, and sometimes other treat too, and we spend all day curled up together and having a relaxing time!. It’s the best. Embrant’s the best.”
Rhosill - “My... what? I dunno, have I ever been on a date?” He hasn’t, and he wouldn’t know how to go on one, or what he’d want from one.
Aselif - “Any chance I get to spend an entire day with Cayde. Id love to take him out to see more of the world together with him at some point, but our responsibilities keep getting in the way of that.”
Lilac - How would someone win you over?
Lace - “There’s... well there’s a lot of intricacies to it, so it’s kind of hard to say.” They rub at the back of their head for a moment, thinking. “Well, if you aren’t looking for any serious sort of relationship or friendship, good, kinky sex is a very fast way to my heart. Longer term, respect my boundaries, respect my privacy, respect my triggers... really just show some fucking respect and don’t push for shit I haven’t given you permission to push for.”
Wrelia - “If you have any notes or research on necromancy, that’d be great! I just really like when people talk to me in general, though. I’m pretty easy to win over.”
Rhosill - “Uh, whiskey? I guess? Tvelle punched me, and I let the recruits all try and fail to beat me up, so I guess whiskey or kicking my ass?”
Aselif - “Usually, I’m the one doing the hard work of winning others over.”
Blush - Do you have a crush on anyone? If so, who is it?
Lace - They laugh. “Cue, pretty obviously! That’s why I’m dating him! Strair, too, I suppose, and Maric. I’m sleeping with all of them, though, so it’s not really a thing.”
Wrelia - “Does my wife count? Even though I already married her? Ummm, Sayeh al’ Rajihd was really cool. I only got to meet her like once, but I have a little bit of a crush on her still.”
Rhosill - “I don’t think so, no.”
Aselif - “I think you should have gotten the picture by now. I am taken.”
Cotton candy - Would you say you have a sweet tooth?
Lace - “No, that’s why I drink my coffee black. I don’t hate sweets, but I don’t love them either.”
Wrelia - She looks around a little awkwardly and giggles. “I think it’s pretty obvious that I do. I’d eat pastries for every meal if I could get away with it! Uncle Ruzzier caught me last time I tried though, and I got this whole lecture on the importance of a balanced diet.”
Rhosill - “Don’t really care how things taste at all, if I’m honest. So no, I don’t.”
Aselif - “Yes, I would. I especially love the sweetness of fresh fruit.”
Coconut - What would be your ideal vacation?
Lace - “I’m admittedly not a huge fan of vacations. I’d usually rather be working. But if I were to pick anything, I’d like to follow Cue while he goes to work and just spend the day watching him.”
Wrelia - “One that my mom, Laighe, takes. She can take all of mine for all I care, as long as she uses them and takes a break.”
Rhosill - “Fuck, I don’t need a vacation. I’m basically always on vacation already. Not like I have a job right now or anything.”
Aselif - “I’ve been told Elona is quite beautiful, and has an abundance of new plant and animal life that produce fascinating toxins and poisons. I’d love to take Cayde to Amnoon to explore, and spend some time working with the new materials I find there.”
Black - What is the darkest thing you’ve ever done?
Lace - They grin and quirk an eyebrow. “Are you sure you really want to hear that? I can go into some pretty intricate details about how I torture people, if that’s what you’re looking for. Like how I hung a man by his wrists and whipped him until he blacked out, then I healed his wounds and started the whole process over again. Or how I froze a woman’s lungs in her chest and watched her suffocate. Or the courtier whose legs I cut off one inch at a time after they tried to force Kvold back into the court. That was a good one.”
Wrelia - “I, uhm, I don’t really wanna talk about it... so how about I talk about this lil guy instead.” She holds up a strange looking rat, leaking a black tar-like substance. “I named him Jeremy. He’s awakened. I awakened him! Isn’t he cute? I guess this counts as dark, right? Well, I’m studying him with the hope that I can figure out some sort of way of treating the free awakened when they get sick or injured. It’s pretty cool, but just a side project. Taimi takes precedent right now.”
Rhosill - He shrugs. “Mass murdering a bunch of inquest when I was a sapling, maybe? My work as an assassin, could also count. Or my time with Scarlet. I’ve done a lot of very dark things. I only regret some of it.”
Aselif - “I’ve sold many of my fellow courtiers into worse lives than the ones they already had. And I’ve helped torture lots of people. The one that haunts me most was a knight from my own court, who I sold to one Lady Tenor. I see her around more often than I’d like. I haven’t seen the knight since. I don’t know if that’s better or worse.”

Quartz Sisters and Ice Cream
Jasper and Amethyst get ice cream.
~~~
Is it too late to back out? Of course it is. I’m not saying I’m scared, but the mere thought of what I’m about to do leaves a sick feeling in the back of my throat.
Amethyst and I walk down the boardwalk, eliciting curious stares from humans who weren’t native to this region, or “tourists,” as Amethyst calls them. I hate them. One pulls out a communication device, poised to record me, and I’m almost compelled to slap it from their hand. Knowing that it would only look poorly on me–and I really am trying to be nicer–I simply throw them an angry look. To my relief, Amethyst also gives them a warning glare, and at the threat of a double-Quartz altercation, the human backs down.
Smart move, human.
“So, you excited?” Amethyst asks, bringing me back to the source of my anxiety. I look down at the smaller gem, and I can see two things clearly on her face: she knows I’m nervous and she is enjoying every moment of it.
“Please.” I grumble, rolling my eyes. “Humans do this stuff all the time, right?”
“Eating? Oh yeah,” Amethyst chuckles. “From what I heard it’s supposed to be three times a day, but where’s the fun in that?” She elbows my thigh as if know what she’s talking about before trotting ahead of me. “Here it is!”
She stops in front of a woefully tiny shop with “Cone ‘N’ Son” emblazoned across a little sign, gesturing wildly as humans move to avoid her. She’s grinning widely, excitedly, and I almost feel bad about how apprehensive I feel. I mean, it can’t be that bad, right? Maybe some of my bad feelings are from–dare I say it?–listening to Pearl. At least it’s just Amethyst, plus a few humans who probably don’t care.
I can do this, I can do this, I repeat in my head, the artificial confidence pushing me forward as Amethyst pushes through the door in front of me. I have to duck and walk sideways just to fit through the puny door, and of course Amethyst has laugh at me the entire time. The young human behind the counter was only mildly shocked by the intrusion, and had recovered his wits by the time Amethyst slapped some currency down in front of him.
“Hello, welcome to Cone ‘N’ Sons!” He greeted in a chipper voice. “How may I help you?”
“Hey, Chip,” Amethyst replies, having been here before. “I’ll have the usual” –the teen’s face droops a bit as she says this– “And my girl Jasper here can get whatever she wants.”
Chip sighs, taking the money from the counter and taking out the sum of Amethyst’s purchase. Tentatively, I approach the counter, looking down at a multitude of colored deserts. To his credit, the teen doesn’t shy away as I approach.
“What’ll you have?” Amethyst asks beside me.
I’m at a loss for words, totally bewildered by the choices before me. As one can imagine, Homeworld has never been too keen on “choice,” given that a gem is made for a specific purpose and is provided with everything they could possibly need to fulfill it. For such a seemingly mundane task, it’s embarrassingly liberating, and frustratingly difficult.
Amethyst shakes my elbow, still waiting for an answer.
“Hey, want me to order for you?” She asks. The teen has already left to concoct Amethyst’s order; I can see him in the back room, gagging at whatever the “usual” is.
“No! I’m not stupid,” I reply irritably, glaring through the glass counter as if the answer would come to me.
“Eh, that’s debatable,” she drawls, throwing up her palms as I turn my glare on her. “Kidding! Look, maybe you should start easy. I mean, ice cream is one of the easier treats, hence why we’re here and not the Big Donut, but still. Ooh!” She runs over to the other end of the counter. “Here, everyone loves chocolate.”
For some reason, the idea offends me. “Try something easy? Me?” Without thinking, I slap my hand down onto the counter’s surface, cracking it. “Do you know who you’re talking to?! I don’t need easy!”
“Woah! Okay, okay, jeez! Stop breaking stuff!” Amethyst calls, pulling at my hand. “You can have what I’m having, but I don’t wanna make the poor boy cry.”
“You’re taste is disgusting.”
Amethyst snorts. “Been listening to Pearl, huh?”
“No!”
Chip comes back, holding a monstrosity of a dish, piled high with all kinds of things that undoubtedly didn’t go on ice cream. I can’t identify anything on there, but by the look on the teen’s face, he seems to regret every single instance that has led up to this moment.
“H-here you go,” he all but gags, relieved when she finally removes it. He then gazes at me pleadingly. “And what about you?”
“Give her the five most unpopular flavors,” Amethyst cuts in, saving me the hassle, and Chip is more than happy to comply.
We leave quickly as he is placing the rest of the money in the cash register, before he can notice the destruction of property. The mixture he handed me certainly doesn’t look like anything significant, but it’s definitely more interesting than the chocolate, packed into a cardboard container and melting in the hot midday sun. It does look good, I decide, stabbing it with my tiny plastic utensil as we find a place to sit on the beach, away from the disturbance of humans. That doesn’t exclude the disturbance of seagulls, however, and we are forced to move three different times before finding an ideal place.
We plop down in the sand, carefully of the dripping deserts, and look out at the water for a second. Idly, I stir the spoon around, but before I decide to remove it,  I feel eyes watching me.
“Uh, do you mind?”
“I’m sorry, but this is, like, you’re first big human thing!” Amethyst replies excitedly. “Besides sleeping, anyways. I wanna remember it so I can tease you about it later.”
I can’t help but smile, always stricken at the best of times by this new-old warmth towards someone I’ve come to care. I jab the spoon into the first scoop one last time–a white ice cream with round bits in it–and lift it up, annoyingly small in my hands. I take my first bite…
“Oh my stars…”
“Good, isn’t it?!”
My mind can’t even begin to process it. I take another bite, and it’s even better than the first. I take a bite of a bright green scoop and it’s even better than that, and suddenly I can’t stop long enough to answer. I can’t even stop to smack Amethyst as she laughs at me, but I couldn’t care less at this moment. After awhile, Amethyst digs into her own slop, and we’re just enjoying the moment.
It’s so sweet and smooth and cold. I hate the cold normally, but apparently it’s different when it’s inside my mouth. So many flavors that I just can’t place, but they definitely taste better than dirt, after having your face plowed into the ground by an enemy. Just a couple bites releases tension I didn’t even know I was carrying. It’s almost addicting, and I have to quietly remind myself to slow down.
Thankfully, and unfortunately, I didn’t have to.
“Agh!” I cry, grabbing my face as an unusual pain shoots between my eyes and Amethyst grabs my arm in concern.
“Hey, Jasp, you okay?”
I pound my fist lightly against my forehead, willing the feeling to go away. “Ow.”
“Oh man,” Amethyst whispered, then more loudly, “oh man! Do you have brain freeze? You can get brain freeze?!”
“What the heck is brain freeze?!” I cry.
“I’ll bet your gem placement makes your face more sensitive,” she laughs. “Dude! What if Pearl get’s brain freeze? Or Peridot? Oh.” She continues, seeing me still cringing beside her. “Yeah, it happens when you eat ice cream too fast. I don’t get it, but I also don’t have a gem on my face.” She reaches up to touch my gem and I smack her hand away.
As uncomfortable as I am, I still see this as not so much of a deterrent as it is an incentive I needed to eat slower. The pain subsides after a little bit and I’m left to enjoy the moment again, reveling in sugary goodness.
“Know what? You’re gonna eat plain old cookie dough next,” Amethyst states matter-of-factly, pointing at one of the leftover bits in my container. “Good stuff. Oh, but first you gotta try doughnuts!” She snorts obnoxiously, and I already know what she’s going to say before she says it. “It won’t give you brain freeze!”
