Hey! Not related to your story but rather to your native language. Do you’ve got any tips for learning Spanish in a (possible) fast way? Any sites or recommendations for learning techniques? Anything that makes it easier.
That would help me a lot. Gracias 🙏
Related to my previous ask. Any tips how to learn the right pronunciation?
For efficiency's sake, I piled both asks into the same one, haha.
In all honesty... learning a new language is kind of particular to each person. Some people respond to some methods, some to others. The most popular current method to learn a new language is Duolingo, I have parents who are unhealthily hooked on it (?) (okay but for real, they keep going to war with total strangers to stay in the top 3 of the diamond league or something?? who'd have thought my parents would join anything that feels like a battle royale game... certainly not me!). But for some people, it might be easier to take a proper class with human instructors rather than a green owl (?)
Personally, I learned English extremely early in life, which made it so I picked it up and never really put it down. The great, sophisticated method through which I learned... was watching TV in English as a little kid :'D I couldn't watch Disney shows in Spanish because we only had access to the USA Disney channel in my youth, therefore, if I wanted to enjoy my cartoons and my animated movies, I had to figure out wtf anyone was saying, and through a mix of asking my parents and my older sisters what each word meant, I somehow started picking it up a lot more than I ever realized I had.
This might sound a little impossible for you now since, yes, kids pick up languages faster than adults, and better, usually, since it becomes kind of instinctive to them. But it's not completely pointless advice: while I'm a HUGE advocate for watching TV shows in the original language they were created... I suggest that you watch shows dubbed in Spanish. Whether Latin American or European Spanish, you pick whichever accent and style you prefer, haha. But watch TV shows or movies, whether produced in Latin American countries or in Spain, or simply dubbed, and you'll be practicing while having fun! Put on subtitles while you're still not confident in your knowledge, it's wild how that actually helps you pick up words and meanings without your awareness. In this case, I bring up my years of experience being the weaboo I proudly was: I can understand a lot more Japanese than I realized simply because I've been watching anime in Japanese with subtitles since I was 11-years-old. That certainly helps in making certain things click in your head without your awareness. It's so real that when my mom started watching K-dramas, and made me watch them with her, I took to picking up a few simple elements of Korean structure, some basic words, obviously not enough to pretend I actually know/understand Korean, but enough that I was surprised to find that, with zero intent to learn the language, I still picked up a thing or two by instinct!
The other major advice is basically the same thing but a little more sophisticated and deliberate: read a book translated to Spanish. Preferably, a book you already know by heart. Find a translated version of any books you're really attached to... and keep your English copy nearby, too. If something is confusing? Take your English copy and find the same scene. Use a dictionary too in case you're confused about the exact meaning of the words. But when you're revisiting something familiar in another language, you pick up a lot of things, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not so intentionally.
I don't know if I had other ideas on how to help beyond taking a class or so, but for now, I think this should be a good starting point and my best advice based on my own experiences learning other languages. So... good luck! Hope you learn plenty! :D
#futuristicbelieverjellyfish#I am profoundly sorry for taking ten million years to answer this ask#because I drafted it#since I thought I had other things to add#and I don't even know if I did anymore#but here goes#tonight is answer all the things you can night#and this was waaaaay overdue#sorryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

March 2023 Wrap-up: 1920s
(You can read more about the challenge on my post introducing the challenge. Basically, Reading Through the Decades is a year-long reading challenge where we read books - and explore other media - from the 1900s to the 2020s, decade-by-decade.)
Hoo boy, this month was a terrible month for me! There’s been so much turbulence going on in my life that I barely had time to concentrate on this reading challenge. I’d much rather just forget this past month ever happened, and just forge ahead to, hopefully, better times ahead.
So, without further ado, here’s...
What I Enjoyed This Month
🎬 RRR (2022), dir. S. S. Rajamouli -> An Indian Telugu-language epic action drama film, RRR centres around fictional versions of two legendary Indian revolutionaries, their friendship, and their fight against the British Raj. -> Just. Three hours of pure dopamine. It might be because I’ve seen a total of three Indian movies before this, but this was a type of movie that I have honestly never seen before. Totally unreal, absolutely delightful. Full of ridiculously improbable and cool action scenes, energetic music and singing, vibrant cinematography. Just a really awesome movie, and a wonderful story about resistance to colonialism.
📖 The Great Gatsby: A Graphic Novel Adaptation (1925/2021), K. Woodman-Maynard, based on the novel of F. Scott Fitzgerald -> A sumptuously illustrated adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's great American novel, painted in lush watercolours. Set in the Jazz Age on Long Island, the novel depicts the narrator’s interactions with a mysterious millionaire and his obsession to reunite with his former lover. -> Lovely art! I’ve had Gatsby on my TBR list for literal ages but I’ve never really been that interested in actually reading it. I only had a very hazy idea of what the novel is actually about - empty rich people partying and a green light. (I’ve never seen an adaptation of Gatsby either.) So, when I found out about this graphic novel adaptation, I thought it would be the perfect chance to quickly get the gist of the story without reading the whole thing. In the end, I actually really sort of liked the story (what can I say, musings on and criticisms of the class system are my thing), and now I do actually kinda want to read the whole damn thing... So, didn’t get to cross that off my TBR yet... 😪
🎬 The Immigrant (2013), dir. James Gray -> After her sister is quarantined at Ellis Island, a Polish woman is tricked into a life of burlesque and vaudeville by a theater manager who moonlights as a pimp, until a dazzling magician tries to save her and reunite her with her sister. -> I was surprised? I was expecting something much more conventional from this, but the movie ended up being deeper and more interesting than I expected. Stories about sisters get to me, I guess. And stories about going through hard times and tough situations yet still persisting through it all, and about power and abuse.

Whump Lists Questions and Concerns:
STREAMING SERVICES
With my whumplists, there are multiple different streaming services and sites that you can find these dramas and movies on.
There are unfortunately often changes when you go across platforms especially when episodes are different lengths or there are less episodes on a certain platform.
For example: A drama with 50 30-minute long episodes on one platform may be condensed to 25 1-hour long episodes. Sometimes that can also screw up any time stamps.
I try to make sure I list every change across platforms but I do miss it sometimes.
When I make whump lists and say they are on a certain platform, (Netflix, Viki, Amazon Prime, etc.) that means they are on the American version of that platform. I know Netflix has this issue with certain things only being available in certain countries so I don’t want to misinform anyone.
—-
TITLES
If you’ve been watching dramas out of Asia for any amount of time you may know this already but for those who might not or are new to Asian dramas: dramas will often have multiple names. Sometimes this is because they are not directly translated from Korean to English (or any other language for that matter) or they really do just have multiple names.
Like Angel’s Last Mission: Love is not the directly translated title. The title in Korean is 단, 하나의 사랑 (Dan, Only Love). English speaking streaming services use Angel’s Last Mission: Love as the title so that is what I list, myself, so it’s easier to find.
I have made an effort to list all names it is known by (as well as listing them in their original language) but sometimes I don’t know all the names.

MY WHUMP LIST MAKING PROCESS
Post Link >>> (LINK)
WHY DO LISTS TAKE SO LONG? - WHY IS MY REQUEST NOT HAPPENING? - etc.
To be fully transparent, I have ADHD. One of the symptoms I deal with that can be pretty bad is executive dysfunction. Basically what that means is when I say I don’t have “motivation” to do something, it’s not that I don’t want to do it. I most often do. It’s the fact that my brain doesn’t produce the “motivation chemical” that allows me to turn my thoughts/wants into actions. I promise I want to make more lists and do it faster. I just don’t have the motivation chemicals to make it happen. In other words: I don’t always get to decide what/when things get done. (However sometimes we all get lucky and I get so hyper focused that I upload multiple lists within a day or two lol) - If you have further questions, I am very happy to answer all of them! —- On top of that I work over 40 hours a week, have a family I try to spend time with, have friends I try to spend time with and am a K-pop stan that is fortunately well-fed content wise so there’s a lot going on for me lol. But every day I do my best to give y’all more and more lists and as fast as I possibly can!!! (Update: I am in no way saying lists are a chore or an inconvenience to me. I hope it doesn’t come off that way. If they were, I wouldn’t make them. Please don’t be discouraged from recommending/requesting!!!)
=======
Happy whumping!!!

went through the goes-wrong-verse playbills/programmes - that is, ‘the play that goes wrong’ and ‘peter pan goes wrong’ (thank you @cornleypolytechnicgoeswrong !) trying to piece together each society member’s career within the society PLUS if possible whatever it was they were doing at the polytechnic (university) course-wise, along with whatever other character snippets they give. this is mostly to inform me when writing but i thought it’d be useful for other mischief/goes wrong fans!
chris bean:
as of TPTGW is the ‘newly elected’ head of the drama society, and is known at the university for his charitable & philanhropic work. he has six acting credits within the polytechnic to his name.
i was going to presume his choice of course at the uni was acting or directing, but his PPGW bio states that his ‘dacting’ (directing and acting) is all self-taught, so who knows. maybe he’s just in the society because of his aforementioned charitable work.
robert grove:
has starred in 40 productions with the society since 2002 (when he began work at cornley polytechnic as a caretaker - i’m taking this to mean he was never actually a student there.) anyway wow explains why they call him a “veteran actor” lol.
he offers acting lessons (reacting, gesturing, emotioning and acting) and can be contacted via twitter @robertgoodactor. i’ve looked this twitter account up and it does exist it’s just not been used since 2017 - that said there are some in-character photos of henry lewis as robert and nancy zamit as annie on there and plenty of tweets.
he runs an extremely dubiously safe cornley youth theatre program and can be contacted at his email [email protected] (membership fees are non-refundable.)
trevor watson:
in TPTGW is arbitrarily from ‘the north east’ (rob falconer’s portrayal, whereas chris leask’s portrayal is firmly and specifically scouse.)
he has a twitter account (rob falconer’s portrayal) @trevtechie, with i think probably the most tweets of the cornley twitters. stopped being updated in 2017.
his participation in haversham was to complete an electronics module - as the light and sound technician i’d assume his course was in this kinda field.
he states that after haversham he wants to never work with the cornley drama society again, but as of PPGW he’s “following in his parents footsteps” and has pivoted to possibly actually studying stage management. (his PPGW bio states that he’s in his final year at the uni for the 3rd time running. so it could mean his staying on with cornley is like partially due to failing his course?)
dennis tyde:
in his TPTGW bio it states that he joined the drama society after failing to get in to any other societies.
he didn’t live on university campus and commuted in from his parents’ house. he mostly just wanted to make friends - he’s interested in snooker and wants to meet like-minded people.
in his PPGW bio he still wants to make friends and says you can reach him via twitter @dennistyde. i checked this account too and again it does exist but hasn’t been used since 2013, and there are only 3 tweets so its much more bare-bones than the others. i like his one tweet about drinking a mug of bovril to calm his nerves before a show.
as of 2021 in promotional vids we learn that dennis and robert now live together.
max bennett:
in TPTGW bio it says he was a first year studying human geography and crime which i was surprised about but sure okay. it also says here that he happily donated “a large portion of his recent inheritance” to the society to help fund it.
at the bottom of TPTGW’s cast page it states that the west end performance of the play is “made possible by a generous legacy from claude bennett” who’s presumably max’s grandfather? or just father? idk
his TPTGW bio also says his favourite movie is the legend of bagger vance which i’ve never seen but is apparently a will smith golf movie.
his hobbies as listed in his PPGW bio are chess, cooking & hanging out with friends and fam. he also dedicates his performance in PPGW to his grandma claire, which is sweet.
annie twilloil:
as of TPTGW she’s designed, built, painted, costumed & stage managed every cornley show for the past 3 years. in the PPGW bio, it states she’s studying cognitive behavioural therapy and pottery, and has taken up life drawing at the student’s union (as the model.)
after haversham, she apparently had an internship lined up at the bolton octagon.
she has WILD backstory in her PPGW bio that says she dedicated her performance to her estranged husband julian who she hoped was in the audiance and two children frangipani and ylang-ylang. not sure if the kids are with her or with the husband but either way, wild. nuts. pretty funny but also pretty tragic.
she’s also got an ad out looking for a new bloke (i suppose if her husband isn’t in the audience) apparently she’s been left by boyfriends previously for an air hostess, a stripper, and a coal miner.
she also enjoys knitting and playing the banjolin (an instrument she made herself.) her email address is [email protected].
she has a twitter account that again hasnt been used since 2017 (@annietwiloil). a couple tweets chronicle dave hearn’s shoulder dislocation but as max so i guess its canon that max also dislocated his shoulder, but he did it while trying to open a twix? lmao
sandra wilkinson:
in her TPTGW bio it states that haversham manor is her 11th production with the company. idk how frequently they put on shows.
she won some kind of local kids beauty pageant in 1998 and did some modelling for a local restaurant (the sunam balti house, which apparently the cornley crew frequent? or have at least been to - seems they struggled with spicyness levels there, especially dennis.)
nothing on her course at the university, i might just take a stab and assume she was actually doing acting, since her bio is mostly about her being a performer.
she’s a big fan of jeremy irvine, they mention him in both of her bios.
jonathan harris:
is a total health & fitness guy. his course at the uni is in physical education and he’s also a model, though who’s to say what for. in PPGW this is expanded and he’s moved on to being a combo model/actor/photographer/lifecoach.
he loves his outdoor sports: mountain biking & kayaking are noted.
he had a bath salts advert out and he hoped it was gonna go national.
lucy grove:
her surname IS grove! i wasn’t sure, but that’s confirmed. not really much about her in there, because the bio is written by robert and he just used it to gas himelf up.
can’t tell if she’s a student at the university or just in the society through robert. genuinely there’s just not a lot to go on when it comes to lucy.
another note is that the murder at haversham manor and the version of peter pan that the cornley crew perform are both written by ‘susie h. k. brideswell’ who i guess either chris knows or chris is a big fan of?
other notes... they try so hard to make out like the characters aren't all the same age like implying that robert is genuinely older than most of them etc etc but ofc the cast featured in the TV broadcasts are all visibly the same age... ofc all this is just comedy innit so you can take it or leave it
also i realised that the american version of TPTGW calls it “the cornley university drama society” since i guess you guys dont have polytechnics over there. a polytechnic is like... a university that offers the arts (among the classics you know science law what have you) basically. by 2021 in promotional videos etc. shields in character as chris has dropped “polytechnic” altogether from the group’s name (but varies between calling it ‘the cornley drama society’ and ‘the cornley amateur dramatics society’) i assume to reflect how much time has passed since the group put on their first production under chris’ leadership - and that now they’re simply operating unattached to the university because they’ve become a real family. love love love, sillyness and love.

Toxic Men in TV Series who are the absolute worst.
(TW: R*pe and Sexual Assault)
While there are some men who seem to be interesting, let’s not deny the fact that there are most male characters who act like their “toxicity” is cool but honestly, it’s horrible and something not to root for. So here are the toxic male characters who are the absolute worst, excuse my misandry:
Kevin McRoberts - Kevin Can F**k Himself
We had to start somewhere from the bottom of the underworld. A recent entry on this list, Kevin is the lead character Allison’s husband who...let’s just say has the brain of a dumb frat bro who is extremely high on pot and hasn’t recovered since then. While most of the sitcoms in the past would portray these so-called goofy and dim-witted husbands as “big fun” and lovable, Kevin is not like that, at all. In this anti-sitcom nightmare, Kevin literally believes that the whole world revolves around him. He plans such stupid unrealistic schemes to seize the day, recklessly spends the savings on stupid irrelevant sports merchandises and doesn’t even let Allison have her own agency outside of his life. Plus he is so petty and spiteful to the point he destroys one good thing that any of the women in the series have, like Allison’s dream job and Patty’s love life. And that latter was because she didn’t bring him a burger! All of this makes him look less funny and more tyrannical. No wonder poor Allison got spurred into wanting to kill him.
Ross Geller - Friends
Ross may seemed like a “nice guy”, but let’s just agree it was a facade. Ross believes that he knows what’s best for the women he dates in the series and thinks he is superior and is always right about everything. He is seems extremely disturbed over the fact that his ex-wife, Carol is a lesbian and is jilted towards her current wife, Susan and snarks at the latter for it. And then there is her extreme control and jealousy towards Rachel, especially in her career. While Rachel is no saint either, Ross jumps to the conclusion that the man who got her a perfect job wants to sleep with her, then goes out of his way to humiliate and mark his territory on her and even if it’s revealed that the said guy has a girlfriend of his own, Ross still doesn’t abandon his theory, unless he believes that the guy is cheating on his girlfriend with Rachel. And then there is the fact that he joined his student girlfriend on a spring break just to have her all to himself, not caring about the fact that what if one of his students or colleagues would’ve seen him on TV with her and that could’ve put him in a huge scrutiny.
Joe Goldberg - You
The show is basically built around how toxic Joe is, but this didn’t stop him from having his own fanbase apparently, with most of them glossing over his actions. But Joe is not a dream boyfriend at all. Once he sees a woman in front of him, he immediately gets obsessed with her and believes she belongs to him and him only. And to achieve that, he stalks her, he checks everything about her, kills people he believes are harmful to her when he himself is the same and when the woman finds out about him and rejects him, he kidnaps and kills her and the cycle begins again.
Chuck Bass - Gossip Girl
What is it with the teen drama industry’s obsession with the “Bad Boy who can be redeemed with love” trope? Chuck Bass is “the bad boy” of Gossip Girl. If his attempted rape of Serena and Jenny didn’t give fans an indication that how deranged he is, his violent and emotional abuse of his girlfriend Blair cements him as this. He slut-shamed women around him, hit Blair once and even traded her for a hotel ownership and somehow he gets a happy ending with her at the end! What?
Nate Jacobs - Euphoria
Nate is a star quarterback of his high school football team and seems like he has it all, but underneath, he is fucking deranged. His untamed manly rage causes him to physically and emotionally abuse his girlfriend Maddy and blackmail Jules, who didn’t do anything wrong but just sleep with his father, which makes me think that Nate is blackmailing her into lying to the cops about his assault on Maddy when she wasn’t even there when it happened just because it’s fun for him. Honestly, I’d like to see the imagine Rue and Jules had of killing him become a reality someday.
Dawson Leery - Dawson’s Creek
Just because the show is named after him since he is the protagonist, doesn’t justify his actions. Dawson sees himself as some sort of a Nice Guy hero who believes he is entitled to everything. He has this extreme view on women and how they should fulfil his fantasies of his Rom-Com world. He is extremely critical of Jen when he finds out about her promiscuous past and tells her that she should be ashamed of herself for it, and gets jealous when his two best friends Joey and Pacey begin dating. And when he was briefly in the movie business, he was a rookie but was already a primadonna with the director and crew of the movie was working on and insulted a film critic for criticising his movie which was actually bad.
Kilgrave - Jessica Jones
Kilgrave is the main villain of the Marvel-Netflix series Jessica Jones. He becomes obsessed with the titular heroine when she breaks off from his mind-control. Before that, he spent years treating her as his sex slave and raping her constantly, which left her traumatised. He begins to stalker and believe it will be a “lover’s reunion” when he will see her again someday. He manipulates and brainwashes everyone around him to his whim and treats most women as objects but despite all that, sees himself as the good guy of the situation. Even after Jessica finally gives him his just desserts, he still haunts her everyday.
Fernando Vera - Mr. Robot
This spawn of satan is the reason why I decided to write this list in the first place. Where do I even start? He is first introduced into the series when he forces Shayla to go on a date with her and later rape her. This is what causes the misandrist vigilante Elliot to sell him out to the FBI and this apparently turns on Vera and moves his unhealthy obsession to Elliot. He has Shayla killed when he tricks Elliot into breaking him out of prison, then returns to have him all to himself by kidnapping his therapist Krista and forcing information out of her about Elliot so that he could “break him and build him back up”, like a fucked up version of The Taming Of The Shrew. He psychologically abuses Elliot into remembering being sexually abused by his father as a child and proceeds to gaslight him into thinking that he was just helping him. The huge problem with Vera is that he sees himself as some sort of Christian Grey who believes that his abuse towards both Shayla and Elliot is charming. Whenever someone failed his desires, he immediately gets bored of them and moves onto someone else, like when he got Shayla killed and moved onto Elliot. That’s why it felt so cathartic when Krista killed him.
Tate Langdon - American Horror Story
Apparently, he is Tate Langdon and he is...hot?? While most of the AHS fans glorified him due to his emo bad boy nature, let’s not forget the fact that he was a school shooter who murdered innocent students and staff and was in general possessive and toxic towards Violet. So no way he is boyfriend material!
Don Draper - Mad Men
Don Draper was the main protagonist of Mad Men. He was an advertisement and marketing executive who had a lot of vices and did a lot of horrible things such as cheat on his wife and treat almost every women and colleagues like crap.
Dexter Morgan - Dexter
While Dexter might seem like the serial-killer killer, there are a lot of things about him which are unadmirable. He gaslights those he is close to so that they could get off his back, obstructs evidence pointing out to him, captures those who didn’t even fit his victims like Doakes and caused the deaths of LaGuerta, Rita and finally his sister Debra. Yeah I think you should stay away from him.
Walter White - Breaking Bad
Aaah..the worst of the worst. Walter White is the protagonist of the series Breaking Bad. He first starts off as a pushover high school teacher who isn’t respected by anyone. When he gets diagnosed with Lung Cancer, he gets into the meth business so that he could support his family, but we all know that it’s not true. He relishes on the power and glory from being a drug dealer and then kingpin and because of that he ends up abusing both Jesse and Skyler, emotionally abusing and selling out the former to the sadistic Nazis and raping the latter several times. He is so petty and spiteful that he kills anyone insulting his ego, just ask Mike. And even after all this, he still claims that it’s all for his family. Like what?

Director Christopher MacBride must relish in screwing with people's minds. His previous film, 2012's The Conspiracy, found two documentary filmmakers drawn into the world of conspiracy theories and wondering what was real... or not. His latest endeavor, Flashback – formerly entitled The Education of Fredrick Fitzell – is another head trip.
The movie follows Fred (Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien), a 30-year-old man suffering from violent flashbacks that harken back to his youth. Brutal and scary, the visions lead him on this journey to uncover the truth surrounding the mysterious disappearance of his high school classmate, Cindy. To get answers, Fred hunts down his former teen drug buddies. One night, they end up at a crazy drug-den party, where these strangers are all strung out on the substance Mercury. Everything spirals out of control from there, as past, present and future versions of Fred come into play.
SYFY WIRE has been following the film's progress throughout production, visiting the set as far back as 2018, where we chatted with the cast. As the film gears up to finally hit theaters, and in the wake of a delay caused by the pandemic, here's our chat with MacBride from that set visit in Toronto. The director sat down with us to discuss the project's bigger themes, high-concept science fiction, monsters, and casting O'Brien.
The original title of the movie had "education" in it. What does Fredrick learn along his journey?
The "education" definitely has multiple meanings. One of them is exploring the idea of how a human being is educated in a broad sense. How do we learn basic building blocks of life that affect us 30 years later? Experiences you have as a kid, as a child, how do those basic educational building blocks that get instilled in you. How do they then influence you when you are a grown man? Another part of it is a chunk of the story is about growing up. There's a coming-of-age aspect to it. Fred is a guy approaching 30. He's on the cusp of full-blown adulthood, in a lot of ways. He's in his first serious relationship. Is he going to commit to his girlfriend? Is he going to give up his dreams of becoming an artist and take up an office job? Is he going to become a responsible adult? His mother is also on her deathbed, which is another rite of passage when you are no longer a child. So, the education is about how to be an adult, but it's also him learning about the forces in his life that control him.
Can you talk about infusing the science-fiction element into this narrative?
Sci-fi is my favorite genre. The type that I gravitate towards most is the Philip K. Dick-type mind-bending science fiction. I love stories like that, whether it's novels or movies… high-concept, brain-teasing sci-fi. Flashback is definitely influenced by Philip K. Dick. The idea of not understanding your own identity is really interesting to me. Mind-bending sci-fi is such a great way to explore these themes of identity. A Scanner Darkly is a great example. It's stuff that could be pretentious or not fit in a straight-ahead drama. But in sci-fi, it gives you license to explore it in that way.
Where does Flashback's shapeshifting creature come into play?
The creature is a mystery in the film. I wanted an antagonist that wasn't a conventional antagonist. It's not a horror monster that is trying to gobble you up or kill you. It's something the main characters perceive when they are on this drug, that seems almost godlike. It seems to be everywhere at once. It has a Lovecraftian vibe to it. He often has creatures referred to as "you can't fathom what they look like, and you would lose your mind if you did." This is my attempt to build something like that, that looks and moves and acts like no other monster in any other movie. We are still in the process of putting it together, so we will see how it ultimately comes out.
Are the effects practical or computer-generated?
A combination of both. Audiences have seen every kind of CG monster. No matter how good the technology gets, there's always that uncanny valley where you always know it's not really there. I like things that have a Cronenberg, sticky-tactile nature to them. I want the creature to feel like it's made up of something that you don't understand, and it moves in a way you don't understand.
How did casting Dylan O'Brien as the lead come about and what did he bring to the table?
When we started casting, we wanted a good actor. But we also had certain criteria. We needed somebody who could be 17 and 30 realistically, which is tough. One of our producers, Russell Ackerman, brought up Dylan O'Brien and asked what I thought. I said, "Yes," and I went and watched American Assassin. I could see how he had formed a real character in the movie. I could see it had boundaries and limits. I could see he was a real actor. We met and he got the script. He not only got the role, but he got the whole story, so I was really impressed.
Flashback premieres in select theaters and VOD on June 4.

Asian drama female lead passivity
I feel like a lot of aspects of female lead (FL) passivity is discussed (the fish kiss being the most famous example), but I wanted to systematically analyze each trope under the theory of female passivity and its feminist implications.
This topic has been stuck in my mind ever since I read a blog years ago (literally like six years ago so I’m sorry I have no idea where it is, I can’t link it) talking about how intimacy in Asian dramas is always portrayed as something women relent to giving up half-heartedly, and men one sidedly pursue. Women are chaste, men are lustful, and women are yielding to men, that is the essential message.
This dynamic plays out in Western media as well--the movie Don Jon is a super interesting analysis comparing how women are indoctrinated by romcoms, to how men are indoctrinated by porn. So women attach grand romantic gestures and romantic commitment to their self worth, because that’s what the girl gets in her happy ending, while men attach it to sexual prowess/having women do kinky sexual favors.
This dynamic is super harmful because it works to suppress female sexuality, as well as male emotionality. People are always surprised when a woman would rather just want sex (or a career) over a romantic commitment. And men are applauded for having the bare minimum of emotional awareness because it’s so rare.
I think a form of Asian drama female lead (FL) passivity that is most talked about is the infamous “fish kiss.” See exhibit A:
The guy initiates the kiss on the usually unsuspecting girl, as if the girl ever going in for the kiss herself would be too sexually aggressive. And as if even enjoying the kiss would be too much, they have her just stand there eyes wide open. It’s awkward, and even slightly funny to watch, but our critique often ends here. But I think the fish kiss is a symptom of a much deeper problem.
You will notice that female lead passivity is present in all physical interactions between the romantic interests.
The pull in hug:
Which sometimes the FL looks uncomfortable to frightened in:
I even found a meme, so I know I’m not the only who thinks this is weird:
(meme/photo credit: https://goliath1357.tumblr.com/post/27115253892/kdramareasons-awkward-one-sided-hugs-k-drama)
What I don’t like about this trope is first of all, it makes female consent seem less romantic. It romanticizes this idea of male pursuit/female passivity, the man will protect her, the man will pursue her (basically like an object), the man will do all the work in making the relationship progress, etc., and it romanticizes this dynamic to women--this is easy to romanticize for us, because to the most of us that aren’t being constantly pursued by two hot men, this pursuit dynamic seems like a dream boat. Often the kdrama female lead (due to the Initial Misunderstanding trope) will even dislike and push away the male lead--and yet he still pursues her, how romantic! -_- Except in real life, the guy aggressively pursuing you and ignoring you disinterest is not romantic.
And the issue is on both sides, because it teaches women to just stand there, not express consent, and not express sexual/intimacy enthusiasm when we’re feeling it (that would be ~unladylike~). And on the other side, it teaches men to do all the pursuing and to assume that a girl standing frozen, wide eyed, and often looking scared as you kiss her, is consent. Sometimes the guy even interprets a clear “no” as consent. (Honestly I’m not even sure if these Asian drama writers are thinking along the lines of “xyz is consent,”...like I’m not sure how often they even think of the concept of consent tbh.)
But anyways, passivity. is not. consent!!!! That’s why we have the slogan “Yes mean yes,” meaning both parties must have enthusiastic, clear consent, for respectful intimacy. Asian dramas discourage women from expressing an enthusiastic “yes,” and it teaches men not to expect this “yes,” so they can steamroll past passivity and even rejection.
And I know some people will be boohooing me on this. “But sudden kisses and hugs are so romantic!” people will say. But what is “romantic,” like many things, is a social construct. We think things are romantic because they’ve always been presented to us as romantic, with swelling music in the background and the implicit understanding that anything is ok because they are Soulmates(TM) that end up happy together. We construct our idea of what is romantic largely out of media.
But that is not real life, and carrying those messages over to real life (as we inevitably all do), is dangerous. I just moved to Japan so this especially hits close to home for me: I dress conservatively by American standards, but I couldn’t bring a quarter of my clothes when I moved because I worried men on trains would interpret them as revealing, and therefore I would be “asking for it.” I, and I’m sure many women will feel me on this, think about and fear sexual assault very often. And when we don’t enshrine active consent, we perpetuate rapist culture.
Since “romantic” is anything our society constructs it to be, let’s romanticize enthusiastic consent! (like this NCT song!!) I think sudden kisses can be cute when you’ve established boundaries that it’s is ok, but it scares me that men and women are watching this and thinking suddenly kissing a person you haven’t discussed boundaries/intimacy with at all is cute. It’s all fun and games when it’s the hot male lead kissing the girl you know he’s going to end up with, but it’s not cute when it’s real life men thinking they’re entitled to women’s bodies.
Other examples of female passivity:
I stopped watching Moonlight Drawn over the Clouds at precisely this scene:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6I0WXeD-dc&ab_channel=KBSWORLDTV
because it was so painful to watch her sitting there like a fish as the guys got these cool fight scenes. Like girllll literally do anything, throw a rock, something! First dramas routinely disable the female characters by making the male characters the able fighters, but even if you’re not an able fighter you can do more than just sit there like a lame duck -_- Especially the parts of these scenes where someone is standing over the girl with the sword and the writers don’t give the girl the presence of mind to simply run away, but they give the guy the presence of mind to somersault into the room, jump over ten monkey bars, slash the antagonist, and catch the girl bridal style on his way down. I guess the damsel in distress trope is as old as the book, but just the complete passivity so many female characters show in fight scenes as they need to be saved is really annoying and disempowering.
I think the worst part is their faces, they’re all like omg! this is so sad!
well girl you could have done literally ANYTHING other than sit there as he took ten bullets for you lmao. Women don’t exist to stand by and be saved!!! This is a historical drama but the modern drama version is when the guy is getting beat up by bullies or whatever and the girl just stands by and does nothing but look upset.
Another good trope that is under this passivity theme is the double wrist grab, where we not only have ONE male lead (ML) manhandling the FL, but TWO MLs. Ahh yes the only thing better than forcibly ignoring consent and the FL’s wishes is TWO men doing it.
I heard this recently even happened in True Beauty...which...that drama...truly I thought Kdramas were progressing until I saw how much people were hyping up that mess of misogyny (not to mention how boringly predictable it was).
I can’t quite express this next trope in a screenshot, but something I also see a lot of is the ML professing his love to the FL and she sort of just stands there like O_O. Like she’s just sort of this object that sits there being admired? It’s just such an unnatural way to react to someone professing their love for you, and these scenes drag on for many minutes of just the ML’s dialogue so the female actress, having no lines, has no choice but to sit there O_O. Like give her lines! Give her reactions! Give her anything other than being wide eyed!!!!
And these physical interactions represent deeper emotional passivity in the female lead.
I’ve noticed it’s almost always the trend of the male lead falls later, but falls harder, and ultimately he puts more energy into making the relationship progress. Again, this buys into female fantasy, but it is an unhealthy fantasy that is grounded, I think, in our insecurities, and our fear of putting ourselves out there (so we would rather have someone pursue us than put ourselves out there and meet someone halfway).
This emotional passivity is why, weirdly enough, sometimes I will really like the drama because the girl is very stubbornly, openly, and aggressively pursuing the guy. A case of this is Itazura na Kiss, or Mischievous Kiss (there’s a Jdrama, Kdrama, and anime--I only watched the anime). Now the guy is downright meannnnn in Mischievous Kiss, this was not a healthy relationship at all, but there was something refreshing about the girl. Sure her aggression was in pursuing a man, but at least it was aggression, and I’d always only seen any hint of female sexuality/actively pursuing as something very stigmatized.
I think a sister trope to the passivity trope is the innocence trope. The guy will literally take the initiative to profess his undying love to the FL and she’ll be like “what?? omg stop teasing you’re joking ahahha.” Why do FLs need to be so oblivious/innocent? I think it caters to the way media is seen through a male gaze but that’s a trope to deconstruct another time.

Puppeteer Headcanons
K so this mans has been living in my head rent free since I first laid eyes on them (like 2013) so here are my headcanons about their backstories, personalities, and more. Some are inspired by the original stories and lore, some are inspired by other bloggers, some are me self-projecting. Warning there are mentions of dark themes so keep caution. Also i am not a writer, (im sorry) @creepy-bi-day enjoy!!
Puppeteer~
Backstory:
Puppeteer was born as Jonathon Blake on July 23, 1974
Mother was Hispanic, dad was American. He grew up speaking Spanish and English. He also never really got along with both sides of the family cause he’s mixed (they didn’t like that). They kinda preferred his siblings.
had 4 younger siblings (3 girls, 1 boy). He was 4 years older than the second child.
ever since he could walk he was obsessed with musical theater. For a while his family was able to Johnny to theater camp. Stopped after the 3rd child was born due to financial reasons
parents were working full time to take care of their family. meant Johnny was basically acting like a 3rd parent. good news was he was able to take care of all 4 of them and meet their basic need of being fed, staying clean etc. bad news it meant that he was taking care of them 24/7 and was constantly tired and not taking care of himself. Started to develop symptoms of depression, but couldn’t get help due to the stigmas around mental health + he’s a guy.
got worse in highschool when his work load increased and he wanted to do more in drama and music but couldn’t cause he had to take care of his siblings. He also didn’t make many close friends except for one girl in his drama class Erma.
Erma was his best friend and they started dating in their second year of highschool. She helped him as much as she could with his mental health, their studies, and even helped babysit some days. They brought out the best in each other.
Erma loved dance and wanted to become a ballerina, but her parents tried to keep her focus on studies. They did allow her to take theater which she also loved. Her parents were very strict and controlling so she had to hid her relationship.
It wasn’t until the second child turned 13 (johnny was 17), when she started to help out more with the other three siblings (12f, 9f, 7m). Thanks to her help and now they were in a better financial position, johnny was able to join plays and bands which had afterschool practices.
He was really good. He discovered he was born with perfect pitch and was able to get the lead in a play in his final year. This was also when he was able to score a scholarship so some of his uni fees would be paid for.
he decided to major in theater and wanted to go on Broadway or at least become a drama teacher
however when apply for uni, Erma’s parents discovered their relationship and they offered Erma a choice, break up with johnny or else they wouldn’t pay for Erma’s schooling. They hated johnny mostly due to racism and the fact that he wasnt going into a “stable career”. Erma choose to break up with Johnny but didn’t want to tell him these reasons cause she knew that it would upset him. So instead she told him that she’s fallen out of love and wanted to break up.
Johnny agreed mostly to make her happy, but this started his spiral downwards.
Johnny didn’t have any friends other than Erma, he also went to uni in a different city so he didn’t have his family there. His depression got really bad, and he ended up isolating himself and failing first term. He decided to kill himself via hanging. Problem is he wasn't heavy enough to kill himself right away, so he was suffering for hours.
He spent his last few hours allowing himself to finally “be selfish” and allowed himself to be angry at his family, Erma, and his overall life.
due to this anger, he was able to come back as a ghost, wanting others to feel the same pain as him.
when he came back he was able to change his body into his idea of a perfect vessel, some improvement were making himself taller, better hair, clear face, smooth voice, bigger dick. and now feeds off of negative energy
Personality:
cold-hearted, cunning, manipulative, a smooth talking, somewhat charming. this is the very carefully crafted version of Puppeteer, He’s the guy who could talk you into doing anything, mostly stuff like jumping off a bridge
however once you get close to him, you see more of Johnathon than puppet. He is very protective of his close friends, will fuss over them and scold them if they aren’t taking care of themselves
good luck getting there tho. After Erma he really had a hard time opening up to ppl due to his fear that they will all leave him at one point.
Powers:
he feeds off of negative energies, the more trauma the better (finally imma a snack), so he usually influences his victims into a deep depressed state where they off themselves. However once he started hanging out with the creeps (mansion au), he really didn’t need to do that since everyone is a lil fucked up. He just feeds off a little bit of everyone, so that no one is really affected. At this point, he probably has enough energy to outlive the fucking queen
He’s a ghost so he can levitate at most like 10 m above the ground, and if he focuses, he can go through walls and become invisible.
he has golden strings due to the ectoplasm inside of him (make his eyes and mouth glow to). This strings are like limbs, They are tough to break but if you do its gonna hurt him a lot. They can extend up to 60 ft, and are about 1 cm thick.
Fun Facts (cause idk how to categorize these)
lots of trauma, need therapy. he feels a lot of shame for what happened and only opens up to his very close friends. again born in 70′s, theres the toxic masculinity and some internalized homophobia.
still a theater kid!! love musicals and can still sing and play guitar. His vocal cords are a lil more sensitive cause the whole hanging thing, but as long as he warms up, can has the range baby. also has Macbeth memorized
can still cook. while he doesn’t like his past and doesn’t need to eat. He wrote down all of the recipes he knew and will sometimes make them again
dick is 6.5 inchs soft 7.5 hard, i know y’all wanted to know. if also like 6′2 tall. tall big boi
i hc him as pansexual. yea he rather died again than admit that he loves someone, but he won’t care about gender. he still is cis tho.
he does fuck. not often but occasionally. slightly lower sex drive than average
grunge king. he grew up in poverty and he great at diy. very leans more punk grunge but can be soft grunge depending on his mood. love beanies and his hair is a little longer than chin length with lots of layers. He is tempted to shave off the sides of his head tho. also has grunge and punk music on his playlists.
bad with tech. like the opposite of ben. gets called an old man since he couldn’t figure out how the tv remote works.
he doesn’t grow facial hair, doesn’t like the look.
acts like he’s too proper to cuss, but he does.... a lot
experienced some racism while growing up so he does say ACAB
probably has some piercings or tattoos or both
still is depressed, has some tough days, but doctor ej gets him pills to help and he has a good support system
shit this was a lot so Helen is next with another post. ill get into their friendship and relationships with other in a whole new post if yall like it. someone tell me if this gives joy cause i could write an essay on this man

Pitch Me your thing!
HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.
NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.
Pitch Me is open for your submissions from RIGHT NOW (22 December) through the very last day of this hellyear (31 December) at 11:59pm MT.
The thing you pitch must have come from what was nominated for THE GIFTENING 2020. (Full list of those nominations in every category below the cut on this post.)
Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.
The pitch itself must be 100 words or less. HAVE PITY ON ME I CAN ONLY CONSUME SO MUCH.
If you’d like to get some help, ideas, feedback, all that good stuff, the Discord is a FANTASTIC resource I encourage you to use.
HERE IS YOUR PITCH SUBMISSION LINK
And, as promised, below the cut you’ll find the list of all the nominees in every category you guys sent in this year. IT’S A LONG LIST HAVE FUN WITH THAT

IWHM just got and ask about how if karlie is oat milk, then “toe is a disgusting shit and piss pot in medieval Europe” and answered “💯” why is she so damn mean
I tried screenshooting it too the second I saw your message! We were too slow this time, Anon, but it’s okay! We learn from our mistakes 💪
This is what I found instead:
About why are they so mean? I don’t know. I do wonder about that myself. A lot. Because, according to their own version of events, Joe is a very passive character. He’s there because the girls want him to be there. He’s performing the service for which he was hired to, and doing it well. He’s not getting into any dramas nor is he being caught in compromising situations that could give Taylor a bad name.
My first theory then would be that iwanthermidnightz&co resent the fact that Joe is “taking all the credit”. They hear people all around talking about Joe inspiring songs, making Taylor feel safe and happy, etc. And in their heads it’s Karlie the one who deserves the praise. Reminding them -maybe- that this world is still very sexist, and men are constantly credited for women’s achievements.
But then again, that’s isn’t really Joe’s fault. It would still fall on Karlie and Taylor. They’re the ones making the conscious decision of keeping Joe in the picture, as a way to build a mirrored image of K&T’s relationship. But Karlie and Taylor don’t really receive much of the criticism. Not only because they’re doing “what they have to do” in order to make their relationship work, but also because they’re technically not giving Joe the credit. They seem like they are, but that’s just the outer layer. Taylor and Karlie are following a multilayered plan, you see. They make it seem like they aren’t together while also letting the world know that they are together. The general public is just too blind to see it.
But that would still not make it Joe’s fault. It’s swifties’ fault for being so naive or stupid to see #TheTruth.
So why does Joe receive so much hate? What’s the need to constantly ridicule him for traits that they themselves most likely posses? Joe isn’t super famous? Neither are iwanthermidnightz&co. Joe isn’t a Victoria’s Secret angel? Neither are iwanthermidnightz&co. Joe still lived with his parents when he was 25? So do or did most of iwanthermidnightz&co. Joe isn’t the head of a company that encourages young women to pursue a degree in computer science? Neither are iwanthermidnightz&co. Joe is a white basic person? I’d bet good money that so are most of iwanthermidnightz&co.
Something that I’ve noticed is that TTB doesn’t hate Joe that much. Granted, she does call him a nobody and refuses to “give him free publicity” by talking about him on her blog. But knowing how nasty TTB can be, that’s almost like giving him a kiss on the cheek. She has even referred to him as one of her favourite beards. The vitriol seems to come more from the iwanthermidnightz kind of Kaylor. And I’ve talked about this in the past. TTB seems to be in it, not because she actually cares, but because she’s very deep into conspiracies. She needs this to be true so her interpretation of the world is validated. This is how she achieves a sense of control in this very chaotic world. Iwanthermidnightz is invested because heteronormativity is something she has battled her entire life.
Now, I’m not a psychoanalyst, nor do I personally know iwanthermidnightz, so I’m just talking out of my cute little ass. But my theory is that her hatred of Joe comes from a rejection of what she has been told to want. From the little glimpses she has given us into her life, she comes from a conservative family. She probably (and very unfairly) has been told that, as a white woman, she should be with a white man. Joe represents the “ideal man” in the eyes of an average white American and conservative family. And now she sees a woman that she deeply admires “being shoved” onto those same ideals by the same fans who claim to love her.
Have I convinced myself to forgive iwanthermidnightz all over again? Kinda. When do I became so soft and weak? I used to drink rosé from the skulls of my enemies.

The Basics #1: Common Phrases
안녕하세요! Hello again! Congrats on making it through the Hangul learning process! Even if it was difficult, I hope you found my lessons helpful and had fun learning! In this lesson, I want to teach some basic everyday phrases. Even though you likely already know Hangul, I will be including these phrases’ romanizations to help guide you in case you aren’t super comfortable with Hangul just yet (which is fine! It took me a minute to get used to it too! Just be patient!). Learning these phrases are essential, so let’s get started!!
Greetings
안녕하세요 (an-nyeong-ha-se-yo) = Hello
This is a formal way of saying hello, so you would say this when you first meet somebody, for example.
If you want to say this informally (with someone you’re more familiar with/older than), you can say 안녕 (an-nyeong). This could mean “hi.”
안녕 can also be an informal way of saying “goodbye.”
(More on informal and formal language in a future lesson!!)
만나서 반갑습니다 (man-na-seo ban-gab-seum-ni-da) = Nice to meet you
The verb 만나다 (man-na-da) means “to meet” (More on verbs in a future lesson!)
This is also very formal, so if you wish to say this informally, you can say 만나서 반가워 (man-na-seo ban-ga-weo), or simply 반가워.
Notice how I romanized the 습 as “seum” rather than “seub.” This is because when speaking at a regular pace, it feels more natural to pronounce it as “seum.” It flows better into the next syllable.
잘 지냈어요? (jal ji-naess-eo-yo) = How are you? Literally translates to “have you been living well?” This question would be asked to someone you’ve met before rather than someone you’re meeting for the first time. To make this informal, simply drop the 요 (yo) to make 잘 지냈어?
Farewells 안녕 = goodbye/bye (informal) 안녕히 가세요 (an-nyeong-hi ga-se-yo) = goodbye (formal) Literally means “go in peace” Use this when you are the one staying behind and the person you are talking to is leaving Ex. You held a house party and are saying goodbye to your guests. Because your guests are the ones leaving, you would use this phrase.
안녕히 계세요 (an-nyeong-hi gye-se-yo) = goodbye (formal) Literally means “stay in peace” Use this when you are the one leaving and the person you are talking to is staying behind Using the same example of the house party, you would use this phrase if you were the guest leaving the host’s house.
Pleading Asking for something can be a little complicated in Korean, so I’ll elaborate on this one in a future lesson. But don’t worry about that for now! I got the basics here for you: ...주세요 (ju-se-yo) = please Literally means “please give me…” Attach this at the end of the noun you are asking for Ex. 돈 주세요 (don ju-se-yo) = please give me money
In some K-pop songs and K-dramas, you may occasionally hear the word 제발 (je-bal), which also means “please.” This word, however, is used more when you’re begging for something rather than just asking for something. Thus, it would be unnatural to use this regularly. So just use 주세요 instead!
Gratitude (These are the most common phrases to express gratitude) 감사합니다 (kam-sa-ham-ni-da) = thank you (formal) This is another example of a ㅂ is pronounced more like an “m” than a “b.” Again, it’s mainly because it just flows better when speaking at a natural pace.
고맙습니다 (go-mab-seum-ni-da) = thank you This one is a little less common than 감사합니다 고마워 (go-ma-weo) is used very often as an informal way of saying thanks 고마워요 (go-ma-weo-yo) can also be used. It’s more formal than 고마워, but not as formal as the other two phrases.
Apologizing 미안합니다 (mi-an-ham-ni-da) = I’m sorry (formal) You can also use the slightly less formal but still polite 미안해요. For an informal version, use 미안해.
죄송합니다 (jwae-song-ham-ni-da) = I’m sorry This is used for when you are in a more formal situation. Like the other expressions, this can be made into 죄송해요 (jwae-song-hae-yo) for a less formal but still polite phrase. For an informal one, use 죄송해.
Introducing Yourself This is the fun part! Some of these phrases may seem a little odd since the structure of Korean sentences are quite different from that of English ones. But we’ll discuss that in greater detail in a future lesson. For now, let’s learn how to introduce ourselves!
저는 [name] 입니다 (jeo-neun [name] im-ni-da) = I am [name] (formal) To break this down a bit: 저 = I/me (formal) 는 = topic particle (no meaning/translation) (more on these in a future lesson!) 입니다 = am/is/are (formal)
This phrase can also be used if you want to say what your occupation is. Just replace the [name] with your occupation:
Ex. 저는 의사입니다 (jeo-neun eui-sa-im-ni-da) = I am a doctor 의사 (eui-sa) = doctor Ex. 저는 학생입니다 (jeo-neun hak-saeng-im-ni-da) = I am a student 학생 (hak-saeng) = student
You may also say: 제 이름은 [name]입니다 (je i-reum-eun [name]-im-ni-da) = My name is [name] 제 (je) = my 이름 (i-reum) = name 은 (eun) = topic particle
If you want to say which country you are from: 저는 [country] 사람 입니다 (jeo-neun [country] sa-ram im-ni-da)= I am [country] (as in “I am American,” for example) Literally translates to “I am a [country] person” 사람 = person Ex. 저는 미국 사람 입니다 = I am American 미국 (mi-guk) = America Ex. 저는 한국 사람 입니다 = I am Korean 한국 (han-guk)= Korea
You can also say: 저는 [country]에서 왔어요 (jeo-neun [country]-e-seo wass-eo-yo) = I am from [country] Literally translated to “I came from [country]” 에서 = particle meaning “from” or “at” 왔어요 = came Ex. 저는 미국에서 왔어요 = I am from America
That’s it for this lesson! I know this was a long one and may seem overwhelming, but there’s no rush! Take your time to get familiar with these phrases. I have some videos to supplement this lesson if you want to hear these phrases said aloud (which I highly recommend doing):
Hello, Goodbye, Thank you, I’m sorry: https://youtu.be/0t3ch-UAbo0 Introducing yourself: https://youtu.be/GxiaH6kWtyY
You may have noticed that I didn’t include any phrases about specifying your age in Korean, even though age is pretty important with speaking Korean (considering the formal and informal variations). I will be introducing those sentences in the next lesson in which I teach you about numbers!
As always, feel free to message me with any questions!! Thanks for studying with me! 안녕!

Wait crunchyroll and funimaion are free? I thought you had to pay for them?
nope, they're free! they both do have membership programs (and i think you have to have a membership to use console/roku streaming, but im not sure on that), but the memberships are completely non-essential! basically, crunchyroll gives anyone who visits their website free access to every anime they have on their database (which is many) without even having to make an account, but if you want to pay $7.99 a month (a lot cheaper than netflix!) for premium, you can get:
-no ads ever, though the ads on the free version are non-invasive and usually anime-related, completely safe unlike the virusy popups on pirate sites
-access to new episodes an hour after they air in japan, though after a week, locked episodes are released to the non-premium public. if you're okay waiting a week, you can still stay up to date with your faves! (though the simulcast is exciting)
-console streaming, i think, but you might be able to do that with a regular non-paid account? i haven't tried so i can't vouch for that.
and if you're griping and whining about why do i need to pay them so i don't have to watch their dumb advertisements? i hate capitalism, I encourage you to remember that crunchyroll (and funimation) is entirely legal, and in order to have access to anime at all, and pay the localizers they employ, and keep their servers up, they need to have some sort of revenue, that's just how the world works. but i can't stress enough that their ads are entirely not a big deal (if you can handle fire force being pushed like no tomorrow that is), and using sites like kissanime are a lot lot lot worse for your wellbeing and your computer. crunchyroll and funimation support the anime industry in japan, which pays the animators and mangaka that work extremely hard to develop the content you get to enjoy for free. it's a miracle that sites like crunchyroll even exist, to give everyone all over the world access to anime in a safe, legal way, and they even translate and sub it for you! in an hour!!
in short, be fucking grateful for the hardworking crunchyroll staff, and for the love of god do yourself and your computer a favor and stop pushing kissanime/pirating as the be all end all of western anime consumption. maybe chip in and get premium for a while, but if you can't afford it, that's totally fine! you're free to enjoy it anyway and still support the creators!!
(*note, this is mostly crunchyroll-centric because i use it more and had premium for a while, but funimation works on a similar model, just has a different pool of anime. if you can't find a series on one, check the other! though i personally think funimation's website is a little buggy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
EDIT: i forgot to mention vrv, which is owned by crunchyroll, and has most of the same anime if not a little more, and has other shows like american cartoons, k- and j- dramas, indie comedies, horror movies, vintage samurai movies, really anything you could be looking for, and it's ALSO free with ads and legal! so check that out too if you're into some non-anime and/or can't find something.
#please rb!#i feel like not enough people know this#especially newcomers to anime#yes there are still some anime that are netflix originals and such or so old or obscure that crunchyroll never caught them#you may occassionally have to pirate for some things and thats just how it goes#but if you can find it on crunchyroll for free!#then dont use kissanime!! why would you!!!

The Day Before the School Festival, in the Home Economics Room... (a King of Prism short story)
A legend from ancient times. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this may be the first King of Prism story ever published?
So, a little history: This short script was first printed in 2D Star Vol 2 back in October 2015, when King of Prism was just barely a thing. It was then directly referenced in the first King of Prism movie (screenshot at the end). Following this it was re-worked into an audio drama released on the movie soundtrack. (Then finally it was re-printed in the Music Ready Sparking fanbook, which is the version my translation was based on...)
(More notes and story under cut)
Translator’s notes: So the text below is based on the original script, not the audio drama. So if you listen to the audio drama you may find small differences such as lines missing/added or spoken by different characters. (I caught a few while editing, but there may be more I didn’t notice.) The biggest difference between the written and audio versions is the introduction to the audio drama was significantly abridged and I don’t blame them. The original Japanese text is really confusing for the first couple paragraphs and I had to re-write it over and over again. (They phrase it like Lu Seriana is a dance school but it’s... not?) Here it is, so if want to have a look. Let me know if you find any discrepancies.
This story takes place a year after Over the Rainbow was formed, in May. So about a year after the Rainbow Live anime but before King of Prism. In other words, the boys haven’t met Shin yet. Since you were kind enough to read my notes, you can find a link to the audio drama in the period of this sentence. The timing of this story’s release would mean the game Hiro is playing is more likely the now defunct Pretty Rhythm Shake, if anything haha. (Prism Rush was a twinkle in some game designer’s eye when this was written.)
And now without further ado....
The Day Before the School Festival, in the Home Economics Room...
It was the beginning of May when the cherry blossom petals had already fallen and new buds were beginning to sprout. This is when Kakyoin Academy holds their annual school festival, the “Kakyou Fest”. Kakyoin Academy is an all-boys junior and senior high school managed by Edel Rose, a organization founded by the late Kou Norizuki, which is known all over for being the best of the best.
The elite beginner prism training school “Edel Rose”, and the combined junior and senior high all-girls school “Lu Seriana Girls Academy” are just two examples of the many institutions all over the country under the large umbrella of dance schools which educate strongly through prism show activities. The male students of Edel Rose attend Kakyoin Academy for their basic education.
Due to the extreme popularity which comes with Kakyoin Academy having a student body of promising future stars, as soon as the annual school festival arrives fans from all over the country come running. The main target of said female fans is the prism show unit Over the Rainbow, formed about one year prior. Top solo idol Hiro Hayami had joined together with genius songwriter Kouji Mihama and charismatic street star Kazuki Nishina to form this same age, three member group.
The previous year a concert had been planned at the festival, but due to the large crowd it was cancelled at the last minute. This year it was announced in advance that Over the Rainbow would not be performing, which left many fans in disappointment.
It was those three popular stars who had secretly gathered the night before the Kakyo Fest in an empty home economics classroom...
Kazuki: Hey, is it really okay for us take the stage tomorrow?
Kouji: Yup! I got proper permission from the school and everything.
Hiro: Gah! Huah! ... But if we announce that we’re going to take the stage it will just be cancelled again like last year. Hiyah! This year have to take care to make sure it’s a surprise. Woah!
Kazuki: Well that’s all well and good but... Hiro, what are you doing there anyway?
Hiro: It’s a rhythm game. It’s a prism show game about us. You know, one of those smartphone apps. It’s pretty difficult. Auah! But my song “pride” is in it... Hah!
Kazuki: I see.... Well, what are we actually going to do on stage tomorrow, anyway? Well, I’m assuming a prism show, but...
Kouji: Well, about that. Actually...
Kazuki: Oh yeah, you wrote it about in the email didn’t you? ...Hey, wait. Hold on a sec. I guess I left my phone in the classroom. I’ll be right back!
Kouji: Okay.
*click, click*
Kazuki: Huh? I can’t open the door!
Kouji: What!?
Hiro: Is it locked?
Kazuki: Yeah.
Hiro: I’ll go check the other door. I wonder if someone could have locked it without noticing we were in here?*
(*In the audio drama the second line is spoken by Kouji.)
Kazuki: But the lights are on, so I’d think they would notice...
Kouji: Kakyouin Academy has an auto-lock system. So it’s possible the doors just lock automatically after a certain time.
Hiro: It’s no good. This door is locked too.
Kazuki: So does that mean we’re just stuck here now?
Kouji: I’ll try and contact the janitor... huh? Where’s my phone? Ah! I left all my stuff back in the classroom too.
Kauzki: Hiro, could you call someone? You’re the only one of us who has a phone.
Hiro: Okay! No prob!
*beep*
Hiro: Huh?
Kazuki: What’s wrong? Did something happen?
Hiro: The battery is dead...
Kazuki: WHAT! Hiro, it’s because spend day to night playing too many games! Now what do we do?
*click click* *click click* *bang bang bang*
Kazuki: What is with this door! It won’t budge an inch!
Hiro: That’s Kakyoin Academy for you. You sure can feel safe and secure here!
Kazuki: What are you so excited about!?
Kouji: If we go about making a big racket we’re just going to end up causing trouble for the school. So simmer down a bit, okay?
Kazuki: ...Kouji, you’re so calm... Well, I guess you’re right. Panicking isn’t going to get us anywhere.
Kouji: Oh yeah! I’m starting to get hungry, shall I make us something?
Hiro: Good idea! I’m starving!
Kazuki: And how are you expecting to make something here!?
Kouji: Easy! This is a home economics classroom so there’s bound to be some food in here somewhere.
Kazuki: Well... I’m sure you’re right, but there probably isn’t going to be much to work with.
Kouji: Look, look! There’s meat, fish, vegetables, and even seasoning!
Hiro: They are probably using this space to store ingredients for the festival food stalls.
Kazuki: But is it really okay for us to use this stuff?
Kouji: This is an emergency situation! We’ve got no choice. Hang on everyone.
Hiro: Suddenly this got exciting!
Kazuki: Good grief. What did we even come in here for anyway? ...Oh yeah! We’re doing a prism show tomorrow, right?
Hiro: Actually, no. We’ve been told we can’t perform a prism show because it will cause a big commotion again.
Kazuki: Oh. Well then what are we gonna--
Kouji: Sorry to keep you waiting!
Kazuki: That was fast! Finished already?
Kouji: Yeah! I wanted to make sure to get it to you while it’s still hot.
Hiro: Woah! What’s all this?
Kouji: Well, first up is amuse-bouche.
Kazuki: W-What did you say? A music bush!?
Kouji: It’s a French appetizer. Something to cleanse your palette with.
Hiro: Oooh! Today you’ve made us a French full course?
Kazuki: K-Kouji! Don’t tell me you’re making a full course meal in a home economics classroom!?
Kouji: Why not? After all, it’s even more important to build up your strength when you find yourself in a pinch, right?
Kazuki: Well... I guess so but...
Hiro: I agree with Kouji! Well. And what do we have here?
Kouji: “In a fateful encounter between the octopus conveniently laying around in the home economics room for takoyaki and the dice cut tomatoes for tacos, cold marinade Napoleon Bonaparte's Campaign in Egypt assortment”!
Kazuki: What a name! What kind of a dish is it!? Napoleon did what now?
Hiro: I’m sure we’ll find out when we try it. *gulp* *chew* Amazing! The refreshing sensation of Napoleon’s arrival in Egypt is spreading through my mouth!
Kazuki: Woaah! This is great! I don’t really know what it has to do with Egypt, but you’ve really outdone yourself, Kouji! To think even in a tight spot like this you still bring your A game to the table...
Kouji: Eheh, thank you! Next is the hors d'oeuvre. “With a fresh egg taken this morning from ‘Hana-chan’ in the school hen house and the spring cabbage raised in the back garden by the principal, all conveniently found in the home economics classroom, in the style of Vasco da Gama’s Arrival the Cape of Good Hope!”
Kazuki: First Napoleon and now Vasco da Gama!? What is all of this supposed to represent?
Kouji: Just try it and you’ll see!
Kazuki: You’ve sure got a lot of confidence in us...
Hiro: E-Exquisite! Aaah... I’m filled with the joy of seeing the Cape of Good Hope after such a long journey. All the deliciousness spreads far across the horizon!
Kazuki: Y.. Yeah... I guess it tastes something like that. But anyway, this really is good. Unbelievable...
Kouji: Next is “With potage of barbecued corn on the cob conveniently found in the home economics room, Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address assortment”!
Kazuki: Now we’re going American...? I don’t know what the theme is anymore...
Hiro: Oooh! Amazing! This is truly a potage of the people, by the people, for the people!
Kazuki: Y... Yeah.. it’s good... I’m not quite sure what part of it has to do with Abraham Lincoln, but the flavor accent thanks to the barbecued corn is superb. ..Wait, is that a reference to southern America? Because you can grow corn there?
Kouji: Eheh. And now the main poisson, “Meunière with red sea bream caught in Akashi and conveniently left in the home economics classroom, in the style of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro shogun’s inauguration celebration with the white radish sprouts raised with love and care on a windowsill by Tamachi-sensei.” Bon appetite!
Kazuki: I don’t even know where to begin with this one... This looks like a meal from a five-star restaurant... What about Tamuramaro shogun.....
Hiro: Delicious! I feel like I could conquer the entire world at this rate!
Kazuki: It’s good... it’s so good I think I’m gonna cry....
Hiro: Eheh I’ll wipe your tears for you.
Kazuki: Thank you, Hiro... To think I’d eat something so good it would bring me to tears... Thank you, Kouji. Thank you, Hiro...
Hiro: Eheh.
Kouji: And last but not least, dessert! “Fondant au chocolat using the chocolate dipped bananas conveniently left in the home economics classroom with cotton candy and caramelized strawberry crepes. All with love... from the home economics classroom”!
(In the audio drama Hiro has an extra line about how sweet it smells.)
Kazuki: This one doesn’t have a historical figure attached to it... But we can’t escape the “conveniently left in the home economics classroom” ....
Kouji: Oh, I forgot! “To be eaten while Marcus Aurelius Antoninus of the Five Good Emperors of the Roman Empire reminisces of the other four!”
Kazuki: Of course!
Kouji: I’ve only just began to dive into the art of French cuisine, so I’m still working on the naming part...
Kazuki: Amazing... It sure doesn’t seem like you’ve only just began... It doesn’t matter what you call it if it tastes like this....
Hiro: Aaah, I’m so full! Thanks for the feast! It was truly delicious!
Kazuki: Thanks for the meal! I can’t believe how good that was. It was my first time eating such delicious French food like that. Thank you, Kouji.
Kouji: You’re welcome! It makes me happy to see the two of you smile!
Kazuki: Huh..? You know what, all of a sudden I’m not so stressed out anymore.
Hiro: You’re right! Every inch of me is ready and rearing to go!
Kouji: Eheh I’m glad! Stress can be built up easily by throwing off your body rhythm by skipping meals and missing sleep. So Hiro, make sure you’re always getting three good meals every day, okay?
Hiro: I know, I know!
Kazuki: Huh? All this time I thought being stuck in this home economics classroom was the source of my stress, but... All of a sudden I feel much better.
Kouji: Well then, shall we discuss what to do on stage tomorrow?
Hiro: Sure!
Kazuki: Oh yeah! That’s right! I almost forgot! You said we’re not allowed to perform a prism show? So what the heck are we going to do then?
Kouji: Well, about that....
*fwip*
Kazuki: ?
Kouji: Ta-daa! Look what I made!
Kazuki: Huh?
Hiro: Oooh! That’s our Kouji! You really outdid yourself!
Kouji: Thanks!
Kazuki: Huuh?
Hiro: Which one are you going to take, Kouji?
Kouji: I think I’ll go with purple.
Kazuki: Wait...
Hiro: Ah, so you made them according to our theme colors, huh? In that case the light blue one is mine!
Kazuki: Hold on a minute!
Hiro: And green is for you, Kazuki.
Kazuki: No, stop!
Kouji/Hiro: ..? What’s eating you?
Kazuki: This is women’s clothing!
Kouji/Hiro: ...Exactly.
Kazuki: ...”Exactly”?! Why are you acting so weird?
Kouji: We aren’t “acting”...
Hiro: This is what we are going to wear on stage.
Kazuki: WHHAAAaaaAAAT!?
Kouji: We’re going to be in the Kakyo Fest Beauty Contest! It’s a surprise!

Professor Max’s Korean Class: Lesson One - Section Two
This next part is the start of learning about particles and how to talk about yourself. By the end of this section, you should be able to make at least one sentence!! Progress!!
을/를 and 이에요/예요
N1을/를 N2이에요/예요
The sentence above (yes that’s a sentence) is a basic way of saying something about yourself, let me explain
N1 is the first noun of the sentence, like the subject or topic of the sentence. N2 is the second noun, in this case, the word(s) describing the first noun.
을/를 (eul/reul) is a particle. A particle is equivalent to an article in English. 을/를 is placed after the topic of the sentence so you know what the topic is. There are 2 versions of the particle depending on whether there is a patchim or not in the word before the particle. If there is a patchim, 을 if there is no patchim, 를.
Ex. 저를 <- no patchim 선생님을 <- patchim
이에요/예요 (i-e-yo/ye-yo) is a verb meaning “to be”. If you watch K-Dramas, you may have heard some words and sentences ending with 입니다 (ib-nida). 이에요/예요 has the same meaning but is the polite version. Like 을/를, 이에요/예요 has 2 versions based on the word(s) that comes before it and if it has a patchim. If there is a patchim 이에요, if there isn’t 예요.
Ex. 미국 사람이에요 <- patchim 마이씨예요 <- no patchim
So if you wanted to say I am an American, you would use I (저) for N1 and American (미국 사람) for N2, as well as the verb 이에요/예요. Don’t forget to add the particle!
저를 미국 사람이에요.
See? Not too difficult right? Now you can say your nationality!!
을/를 vs. 도
Sometimes instead of using 을/를, you can use the particle 도 (do). 도 is also used after the topic, like 을/를 but there’s a difference in when you use them. 도 is used when agreeing as if saying me too.
Micheal: 저를 미국 사람이에요.
Yumi: 저도 미국 사람이에요.
In the dialog above, Micheal is saying that he is American then Yumi says she is also an American. Changing the particle after the topic to 도 can turn a sentence into an agreement with the previous one.
If you have any questions or inquiries about words and such, send me a message to my ask box!
