#it’s a 4-5hr drive

Loverfest tix helped me for the “second chance” era tickets but I’m waitlisted now. Probably because I’ve been to eras already.
That makes sense, it just appears that they didn’t help for this leg of the US tour, because the one out of the four of us that got a code is the one who didn’t register at all for Leg 1 and had zero boosts (but also had zero previous eras tickets, but that’s kinda moot since I’m the only one of us who did have tickets leg 1).
I think they did help the first leg, kinda, because I got a code and tickets in the great war, and I had both LoverFest and Midnights pre-order, but I know it didn’t totally help because lots of people who had one or both got waitlisted and then nothing.
I fully expected to be and should have been waitlisted this time since I did have tickets leg 1 (and I was, in fact, waitlisted). I’m very fortunate to have friends who are including me this round and that I can pay later since right now all my money is going to Waldo’s medical needs. If it doesn’t work out for me to go in the end, it’s not like they’ll have any trouble finding someone to take the unused ticket. But first, they have to even get them. Which, as we know, is easier said than done.
#thanks for the ask💕#I hope every one of my moots on the waitlist eventually gets in#the friends I’m going with are in Detroit but did not get Detroit tickets leg 1#so they’re going to drive to Indy#it’s a 4-5hr drive

out of curiousity: if you want to / have to go somewhere further away where you could cross the distance with either ground transportation (car, bus, train, boat) or by airplane, what amound of time spent on travelling on ground would make you pick an airplane instead?
as in: if travelling from A to B would take you either 12hrs by train, or 1½ hrs by plane, which option would you pick?
consider that the full travel time also includes such things as layovers for switching between trains or means of transportation, so if you have to spend 3hrs at a station to wait for the next train, that counts toward the full travel time as well
rb for sample size yada yada but also feel free to add explanations for your choice or more in depth options than this poll allows
#based on how i recently saw someone say theyd pick a plane if the drive is over 5hrs which to me just sounds crazy#like the drive from my hometown to amsterdam is 4½ hrs id feel insane to take a plane for that#soph txts#polls

my take on batfam sleep schedules (and everything else they do)
bruce
10pm - 5am : patrol [7hr] 6am - 2pm : sleep [8hr] 3pm - 9pm : work from home, sometimes dinner with the kids [6hr]
bruce has the benefit of being able to choose his own work hours and work from home. still, he pushes himself round the clock to keep on top of his life as both batman and bruce wayne. his sleep is perfectly optimized and scheduled; not a minute more than he thinks he needs to operate at peak functionality.
dick
11pm - 4am : patrol [5hr] 5am - 1pm : sleep [8hr] 2pm - 10pm : work [8hr]
dick works full time, and his body naturally needs a lot of sleep, so regretfully, rather than cutting into his sleep time he cut into patrol time to make his schedule work. ideally, he'd be sleeping closer to 10 hours, but he can't afford it.
jason
6pm - 1am : work [7hr] 2am - 11am : sleep [9hr] 12pm - 5pm : whatever he wants basically [5hr]
jason has the least time crunch, because he's the only one whose "night job" actually pays. he has a pretty passive income as a crime lord. he just needs to go out every so often and remind the streets why they pay up to him.
tim
2am - 6am : patrol [4hr] 7am - 3pm : school [8hr] 3pm - 6pm : homework & hygiene/food [3hr] 6pm - 1am : sleep [7hr]
tim is not doing so well. i hc that tim is anemic and suffers from chronic fatigue, so he needs way more sleep than he is getting. he cant negotiate his class times, and he needs to do his homework in order to pass. he's not willing to cut patrol time down past 4 hours, so that leaves him with really not quite enough time to sleep. he's married to caffeine.
duke
11pm - 6am : sleep [7hr] 7am - 3pm : school [8hr] 4pm - 8pm : patrol [4hr] 8pm - 11pm : food, homework etc [3hr]
duke is only managing because he's okay with a shorter daily patrol and doesnt need as much sleep as tim. he's also the only batfam member who actually sleeps at night.
damian
10pm - 5 am : patrol with bruce [7hr] 5am - 6am : nap [1hr] 7am - 3pm : school [8hr] 4pm - 9pm : sleep [5hr]
damian does all his homework at hyperspeed during study hall and in the car driving to and from school. because he is insane. damian also has the ability to powernap like the dead. that 1hr actually does something for him.
cass
9pm - 6am : patrol [9hr] 7am - 4pm : sleep [9hr] 5pm - 8pm : whatever she wants basically [3hr]
cass, like jason, doesnt have a big time crunch due to being unemployed and not in school. yay! she used to spend time trying to learn to read and write, but it was just frustrating for her so eventually they decided she should quit.
you may notice that there is not a single time when they are all awake and available to have a family meal. they have to plan those well in advance. its a whole event.

📖ꜱᴜᴍᴍᴀʀʏ: maybe you shouldn’t be late to any event you go to, or bare minimum don’t make any bets you know you’re not going to win. having no hand-eye coordination is not great when you’re being forced to play golf.

jamie is, objectively, a bit of a strange guy. now, its not that his music taste itself is odd, but rather his choice of playlist names. he won't knock other people's preferences but he personally believes that life is too short for boring playlist names. the ones he comes up with are just so incredibly niche but make perfect sense to him. his playlists i've come up with so far ( except 2 & 3 which i saw & stole ) are as follows:
chugging 5hr energies in the campus library is his study/focus playlist
neon green troll living under the golden gate bridge is songs that have big trickster energy, do with this info what you will
is this a wedding or the apocalypse is pretty much entirely optimistic nihilism if that makes any sense. sorta just nothing matters so do what makes you happy
songs that taste good is songs that have really satisfying sounds or lyrics that are just objectively fun to say/sing
ruh roh raggy ( got any scooby snacks ) is his late night driving playlist
arthur's fist is based on the meme & is basically just a rage playlist of songs that are both angry & aggressive
lets commit a felony & tweet about it is for when he's either feeling like the main characte or needs a confidence boost
white noise 10hrs is still just music but its what jamie categorises as having a noisy sound. i'm not sure how else to describe it tbh
call me austin powers the way i be groovin' is songs that have a fun bass line or are a lil funky
my frisbee is got in a tree again is just sort of his generic feel good happy music, the type of thing you want to listen to if you go on a park picnic on a nice day
sometimes violence IS the answer ( untitled goose game ) is his work out or training session playlist all really high energy & intense, very hype
how to channel your inner pomona sprout is his stoner playlist because weed → herb → herbology → professor of herbology
brb gotta level up real quick is just video game songs or soundtracks he enjoys
please don't sue i have a family to feed is copyright-free music he can safely play while streaming
welcome to the chum bucket is just metal music
got that dr suess flow is just rap music
hot sauce classics is for all the old school iconic rap
tongue stained from all the pop rocks is his favourite b-side tracks
call my dentist is bubblegum pop
little berry richard & chuck ( in them we trust ) is exclusively rock & roll
rock paper scissors winner gets an autographed picture of jack black in a bowser onesie is inspired by this tik tok but basically the concept is songs that evoke the feeling of jack black while being from other artists. no particular genre or subgenre either, they are truly all over the place but all have the jack black vibe to them. one of the comments also referred to this as wizard music which, yeah 100%
& his sex playlist is titled yo yo yo & a bottle of cum but was previously called shake n bake
jamie also is v much the type to make people playlists or mixtapes that have equally strange names bc its his brand <3 hits such as: two needles in a haystack or made this you in a fever dream & the songs were actually good. or from when he was feeling Romantic: i'd join a pyramid scheme for you
that is all, ty 4 ur time
#j. lincoln. character study — nothing is ever so mischievous in its own place as it is out of it#queued.#in case the tiktok vid ever goes down it listed a few examples#songs like war pigs or holy diver and bands like skull fist or iron maiden#and specifically the guitar riff in fog machine by white reaper

ohhhh, spotify might be worth the money, actually. i've gotta spend 4-5hrs locked in a car with my grandmother (shout out to greg succession, he knows what i'm going through) and i know for a fact she'll hate my music and explain why in excruciating detail, but i also don't know if she'll let me listen to a podcast/if i can tolerate a podcast while driving on the interstate and so spotify handed me an instrumental roadtrip playlist! it's "only" 2 and a half hours long but i could just play it twice. this could make the difference.

I used to regularly have migraines with extreme symptoms and I just want to add onto op’s points and into detail about 1: other possible symptoms, 2: the timeline of a migraine, and 3: how they feel compared to regular headaches. The first time I had one I genuinely thought I was dying LMAO so maybe this could help someone identify it if they ever go through something similar. This is largely based on personal and familial experience so it’s by no means comprehensive
1. Additional symptoms: vision loss/tunnel vision/grayouts‚ numbness (particularly around the face, tongue, hands, and extremities)‚ body aches, vertigo‚ motion sickness & vomiting
For me my vision is severely impacted and it starts with tunneling vision, where everything under my natural sightline disappears. Flashing auras start off to the side and slowly increase in intensity, spreading from one side to the other. Things like reading and making out faces become extremely difficult. This all looks similar to our eyes’ natural blind spot except Across The Whole FOV. In worst cases basically all I can see is gray flickering static everywhere except for one corner of my vision. The auras are still present even with eyes closed (which sucks ass)
Nausea and motion sickness usually only kick in if I move around too much once the migraine starts. Because my vision and balance get totally screwed, trying to walk around or (god forbid) drive makes everything worse.
2: Timeline of a migraine (in my experience)
0-10 mins: faint auras and tunnel vision, evolves into full vision loss within 10 minutes. I usually notice the migraine creeping up and immediately go somewhere quiet to lie down for the next few hours
10-20 mins: hands and nose/mouth get tingly, eventually going completely numb. Mild headache and “metallic” feeling around face
20-60mins: vision problems slowly normalize, and feeling gradually returns to numb areas. Headache becomes severe
1-5hrs: headache stays constant. Nausea and vertigo are at their worst if I moved around too much early on
5+ hrs: headache becomes tolerable. Brain fog kicks in and makes basic decision-making & communication take more effort. There are lingering auras in vision and faint tingling in areas that were numb before. Overall more sensitive to sensory stimuli
2-4 days: same lingering symptoms that slowly become milder before fully vanishing
3: Migraines vs. Other Headaches
The best way I can describe migraines is like a sharp, electric pain, as if something metallic is near my sinuses and teeth. If you’ve ever experienced an electrical shock it’s similar to the sensation after the initial zap. Or, if you amplified the feeling of hitting your funny bone and moved it from your elbow to your head- it’s that sort of hitting-a-nerve sensation. It’s less throbbing in my experience and more like rolling waves. It’s strongest toward the front of my skull and usually worse on one side than the other. The pain is highly acute and doesn’t diminish much when changing position/environment
Regular headaches, meanwhile, tend to be a more dull pain. It usually feels like there’s high pressure in a part of my head. Instinctually I seek out a way to relieve said pressure, or to relax and release tension I might’ve been holding subconsciously. Drinking water and taking pain medicine almost always help. There are usually ways to find immediate relief of some sort, regardless of cause.
With headaches, sleeping can make the pain pass quickly (or make it disappear entirely). However with migraines, if I try sleeping through it’s like it pauses and resumes right where it left off once I wake up.
Regarding causes and treatments, I found my biggest personal triggers to be related to my diet and posture/nerve irritation. I made note of what I did leading up to migraines and noticed some patterns with certain foods. Artificial sweeteners (like in sweet tea) and nitrates/canned foods are my big triggers, so cutting back on those has helped greatly. For my dad, both alcohol and caffeine can cause them in excess so he consumes them in moderation. The other big cause for me, neck strain, largely comes from carrying things with bad posture- my most recent migraine was after a camera op gig with a shoulder mount, during which I held the shoulder mount too high up on my neck. The extra weight and pulling there caused a migraine immediately after the event. Being more mindful of my posture especially when carrying anything has made migraines far less common.
I hope most people never have to experience migraines to this degree at all, much less monthly like I used to, but just as OP said please please know there are treatments out there. Whether that means seeing specialized doctors or just taking time to identify your own common triggers, there are options. No one should have to endure chronic pain regardless of severity
okay i don't mean to be dramatic but it's downright evil how doctors (don't) treat people with chronic headaches
#migraines#why did describing migraine sensations make me feel like i was about to have one. head in my hands#ANYWAY sorry for adding so much here op </3#migraines fuckin Suck and if this can somehow help even 1 person it'll have been worth taking time to write out

EVEREST BASECAMP TREK
How did you get there?
I flew from London to Kathmandu via Delhi on British Airways. The flight cost c. £900. It’s 8hrs to Delhi and then 2hrs to Kathmandu with a 5hr lay over. I flew with one of the guests of the trip. We talked non stop during the flight. It was fun and went fast! I would say bring some cash (US$) for the Visa on arrival. $50 gets you 30 days, $125 gets you 90.
Where did you stay in Kathmandu?
I spent the first nights at ALOFT Hotel in Thamel. Aloft is a great hotel, popular with climbers and lots of my friends stay there or pass through. It is a comfortable fun hotel, but for the TSA expedition we use the Hyatt Regency which is one of the best hotels in Kathmandu. It is away from the hustle and bustle of Thamel and set in beautiful gardens with tennis courts and a swimming pool. The restaurants are great there also!
How did you start your expedition?
We had an amazing day exploring Kathmandu’s cultural sights — most notably it’s incredible temples and the Hindu cremation site on the river. We finished in the Thamel area at the climbing shops for some last minute shopping before heading back to the Hyatt for our welcome dinner and briefing.
How do you get to Lukla?
We use Heli Everest to get our clients to Lukla to begin the trek. Lukla is the start of the EBC trek but can only be reached by air as it is beyond the road networks in the Himalayan foothills.. Heli is safer and much more convenient than flying. Fixed wing flights to Lukla now depart from Ramechappe instead of Kathmandu — this is a 5 hour drive. We prefer heli! This year one group of clients were fortunate to have the super elite Italian alpinist Simone Moro as their pilot! Simone has many first ascents of 8000’ers in winter and is one of the best high altitude pilots in the world..
How was the first day of the trek?
Unfortunately we had some wet weather on the first day which is not unusual at this time of year in the afternoons on the lower parts of the route. But we still had a great trek to Phakding where we stayed at the excellent Sherpa Guide Lodge whose owner, the charming and super affable, Dawa Sherpa has been to the summit of Mount Everest, 3 times. This first day is fairly gentle with a net altitude loss and 6km of trekking which took 2hrs 45 minutes. In the evening members enjoyed some great food, (the dhal bhat was to die for) and played Jenga.
Describe the middle of the trek? Days 2–4!
The 2nd day is one of my favorites The path follows the river upwards and the scenes are very dramatic! Throw in the big suspension bridges hanging high above the valley and it is quite the thrill! But perhaps the biggest treat comes at the end as Namche Bazar comes into sight. I don’t think there is anywhere else in the world like Namche. Totally unique. The Sherpa town has no roads linked to it so everything you see is either produced locally or brought there by heli or by yak! We went for coffee at the world famous Sherpa Barista Cafe before a drink at the Irish pub!
We spend 2 nights in Namche for acclimatisation and during day 3 trek to the Everest View Hotel for lunch. Sadly there was no view of the great mountain this time as it was obscured by clouds! But the lunch is excellent and afterwards we hiked to Khumjung to see the monastery and chat with the locals.. It’s a beautiful, timeless place. We wonder how they cope in winter but somehow they do — incredible people in this part of the world. We finish the day with Coffees at Sherpa Barista Cafe and dinner at our excellent tea house.
Day 4 is the trek to Tengboche . He we start to see incredible views of the mountains of the everest basecamp trek region. The mighty Ama Dablam in particular.. The first part of the trek hugs the contours on the mountain. It’s beautiful. After lunch we cross the river and ascent 500m to Tengboche. There’s a bakery here so after a coffee we tour the ancient monastery before heading down to our tea house. Possibly the best tea house in the whole valley — the peerless Rivendell, complete with en-suite bathrooms, hot water a plenty and heated blankets!
We re guessing it gets a bit more Spartan after Tengboche?
Definitely. Dingboche is high in the mountains at over 4000m. At this point there bathrooms are shared abs the showers (if there are any) are to order. But it’s no hardship. We are in a wild and beautiful place — no one is really missing their showers! You really start to notice the camaraderie of people on the trek at this point. The evenings are colder so people huddle in the communal areas for warmth and people from all places in the world and all walks of life talk with each other and swap stories. It’s a great time.
Describe the scenery at this point. From Dingboche or Lobuche onwards?
It is BIG. Very big! I remember the first time I went to Chamonix, thinking, wow these are big mountains. Then you arrive to the high Khumbu Valley and it’s like nothing you can imagine. The scenery is breathtaking and the mountains are huge. 6,7 and then 8000m mountains loom over you. It is very, very beautiful.
The day you reach EBC you launch from where?
We go from Lobuche to EBC and back to Gorakshep. It takes about 9 hours all in all. Sadly this year I didn’t make it to EBC with the clients. One member started showing signs of altitude sickness so I stayed with them in Gorakshep. We have a great relationship with Heli Everest, which is owned by my logistics partners. They flew our member free of charge to Lukla which was amazing. He felt better immediately.
How many hours a day does one trek?
With the exception of the last day where we trek from Lobuche to EBC and back to Gorakshep the days are very similar in terms of length and structure. We have breakfast around 7 and try to leave each morning around 8am. We trek for 3hrs and then stop for lunch. Everything is cooked to order so there can be a wait — during which time we serve lashings of hot ginger and lemon tea. After lunch it’s normally another 3 hours to our destination for the night.
What happens at EBC?
Well for our trekkers it’s mostly photos! Of the famous rock that sits at the start of the camp, the basecamp itself and the part of the summit that is visible. This year one of our members staged a tennis match which was fun! He is a tennis fanatic and owns tennis clubs in Indonesia.
After EBC, do guests trek back to Lukla?
No. Our trip is an ‘express’ edition. We take the same time to go up as most operators but we whisk people down by heli from Feriche. This means guests can get the whole trip done in c. 10 days which is typically what our clients are after. Those with more time usually opt for more days in KTM at the beginning but lots like to fly in and out.
Tell us about the food on the Everest Basecamp Trek?
I’d describe it as hearty and plentiful! If you have an aversion to fried food then there are steamed and boiled options and lots of things for vegetarians. We have 3 meals a day. All provided in the cost of the trip along with an endless supply of tea. The menus are fairly similar. I usually go for eggs in the morning or porridge with honey. This year I was on a bit of a shred after the Atlantic Row so stuck mostly to the veg sherpa stew and the soups. Garlic is amazing and said to be good for the digestive and immune systems. But there’s also sherpa pizza, fried rice, noodles, pasta, the local specialty dhal batt and different curry’s. The momo (steamed dumplings) are also epic!
Once back in Kathmandu what happens?

Personal rant
I just realized something. Growing up, I never had my needs met. Most of my life, I never had a bed frame. The only reason I had one after starting kindergarten is because I bought one last year.
The only reason I had clothes that fit me was from old job uniforms, christmas gifts from outside the family, or buying them myself when I got a job. Fuck, I once had a principal buy me an entire outfit because she noticed I wore the same outfits every week.
I haven't been to a doctor since middle school. I don't have a primary care doctor. I had to pay for one of those health clinics after being unable to walk for two years without pain, I let it get so bad that I didn't try to get care until I couldn't stand for 4 hours without vomiting from the pain, and even then it was hell just getting a ride.
I still haven't learned to drive, gotten a state ID, or even been to the dentist since around 2nd grade. I had to beg my Aunt for money just so I can buy a toothbrush and other essentials tomorrow. Hell, she is paying for my drivers lessons on saturday.
I'm going to be 22 next month. I'm moving in July. I own very little, but everything I own right now, I bought. I learned how to sew, self taught, out of necessity. I learned how to fix things for the same reason. A skill none of my siblings have, so they turn to me for help.
Most of what I own is hsnd me down clothes that never fit, so I'm going to be going through them and giving them away. After I move, my aunt is taking me in to help me out with paying for college, I'll have to save up for a new mattress. My current one is a gand me up from my little brothers, who got brand new beds, mine was in a flood and is older than me. More than half if the springs are collapsed and every night I have 1-2 springs trying to stab me in the back.
I don't think this is normal. Why do my siblings always have new, fitting clothes and such? At first I thought it was because I kept helping out financially. But, then I kept thinking back. Even before I had a job or was helping out so much, their needs were always met. Why weren't mine?
I was always expected to just, figure it out. To provide for myself somehow. I mean, I managed, but I was just a kid. I was in kindergarten when I started babysitting my siblings. Literally woken up in the middle of the night to do so. It might have started before kindergarten.
I was always expected to be a parent to my siblings. Always. I would sneak home food from school when they were sick so they could eat. I would skip meals so they had more. I would sell what little I had to pay for food and bills. Hell, I managed to strike a deal with my last period teacher to leave school early in middle school so I could be home to take care if the pets, do chores, help my siblings with homework, and make dinner. Then when I finally went to college the first time, my mom got cancer so I dropped out and came home to help. I worked two jobs, one job had me come in for 10hr shifts every morning, the other for 5hr shifts every night. When it got worse I quit the less paying job and spent my afternoons tending to my mom and trying to keep everyone in one piece.
I've spent my entire life ignoring my needs and wants to make sure everyone else's were met. I wanted desperately for my siblings to have the childhood I never had. I don't want them to ever go through what I do. And I succeeded.
And I think my dad realised that even though I'm helpful and all with everything, he knows that if I stay living with him and my siblings, I'll never be able to get my needs met or become truly independent. So he's kicking me out to go live with my aunt so I can go back to college and save up enough to move out. As scary as it is, I'm thankful for that. But I can't help but worry about my siblings, despite knowing they're in good hands and that they are nearly adults.
It's going to be really weird. I know it'll be good for me, but I can't help but worry.

option 1: no man’s sky
PROS: easier to pick up after a workday and just hang out, gives me alien design ideas for personal projects, really good game for listening to podcasts/audiobooks while playing
CONS: i am several updates behind, i have a heavily modded save and dont know if everything i was using is compatible with the latest version of NMS. if not id have to start over cuz i had mods that affected terrain generation and that will totally break everything if i change those, my poor overworked computer doesnt always like running it
option 2: splatoon
PROS: really the only pvp game i play on a regular basis nowadays and ive been getting that itch lately, haven’t played side order yet and definitely want to, funny squid game
CONS: i am not immune to getting Gamer Mad, holding a controller really fucks with my hands after a while
option 3: either of the katamari rerolls, i haven’t finished either one
PROS: i fucking love these games and i really want to 100% both of them. another game i can kinda zone out while playing
CONS: the fucking cow and bear levels will genuinely drive me insane. also see above controller issue
option 4: megaquarium
PROS: i still haven’t finished the latest dlc campaign
CONS: i have almost every mod on the steam workshop and trying to play it makes my poor laptop scream in agony
option 5: wobbledogs
PROS: they’ve added a shitton of stuff since i last played im pretty sure. i kind of miss my abominations
CONS: every time i play this game i go into a trance and accidentally stare at the screen unmoving and unblinking for 5hrs straight and resurface unsure of where i am
there are several games i want to pick back up as of late and im having a very hard time deciding
