do you like tim joins the batfamily early or late better?

i love a good early fic. i have my own ideas for a few different ones i want to write someday, and i read them a lot. my favorite is "The Lone Ranger Never Had to Deal With Bruce Wayne", it's super fun. but i think the late fics are severely underutilized. you could do SO MUCH with this one. did Jason never die? was the timing just off? did Tim's parents start caring about him before he became Robin and had some individuality? did his parents not die? did his parents die before he could become Robin and so he decided to fake having an uncle so he could raise himself? is he running his parents company or did he find someone he trusted to take care of that while he completed his education? what about Tim's friends (that he has fic writers please stop forgetting Tim has friends outside of Robin), are they in on whatever scheme Tim has going? is Tim helping people out without a cape or did he make his own? so many possibilities...

also, i think when you do write a late fic, it should be very recognized how much the family would have changed if Tim wasn't there, especially if the fic doesn't have anyone as Robin (specifically Steph). Bruce would NOT be doing so hot unless someone else stepped in. maybe Dick broke the ice and came back on his own and he's being taking care of Bruce, but it's strained because they're both not big fans on the whole "emotions" thing. if Jason is still alive or he was found before the LoA got him, whatever the case, Bruce would definitely be doing much better. but if Jason still died and Tim (or no one else) came around, I fully believe Batman would have been injured so badly he had to quit, he would have died, or he would have hurt someone

tbh i was pretty neutral on him until i started reading vulgate, he's so much more fleshed out and layered there (i started reading arthuriana with le morte d'arthur and he does fuck all there lol)

i think he's an incredibly compelling character, especially with his interpersonal relationships. there's just something about gawain having a younger brother named essentially not gawain and being a huge contrast to him, and i also really like his relationship with mordred in vulgate as an older brother who raised him. he's the kind of character who's wedged in between characters that are larger than him (i'm sorry agravaine but you're related to gawain, mordred, and arthur and being someone who's related to them is kinda your whole thing) and that in itself is interesting. especially considering that he dies during the fall of camelot, arthur mourns his death

tbh, i find him to be severely underutilized (and if not, completely done dirty) i hate the characterization in which he's just mordred's lackey and there to pretty much die to lancelot and nothing else.

i think it would be way more impactful if he was fleshed out as a legit character. adds to the tragedy that he was somebody the audience actually cares for and not just some NPC lancelot murders lol.

also, really dislike how prose tristan stuff writes him (and the orkney brothers in general) where he's an irredeemable villain but i digress. it doesn't help that i don't care for the orkney/wales blood feud. it's never done in a way that resonates with me.

also the character assassination TH White has done to agravaine PISSES ME OFFFFFFFF ALL THE SHITTY AGRAVAINES IN MODERN ARTHURIANA IS HIS FAULT I SWEAR. aka making him morgause's killer throwing in some added incest in which he lusts for her. GROSS !!!! agravaine get behind me!!!!!

tbh i could put anything that he says in mordred, a tragedy by henry newbolt but i really love this one in particular. talking about their brothers and that they're on mordred's side.... it brings a tear to my eye i love the orkneys so much. they're BROTHERS !!!!!!!!

obviously him and his brothers! gawain and agravaine is great. so is mordred and agravaine. among his brothers those two i think he has the most interesting dynamic with. this post is already stupidly long and i could make an entire post in general about agravaine's relationship with his brothers, so i think i'll focus on agravaine and mordred.

for one, i love agravaine and mordred in BBC Legend of King Arthur 1979. the orkney brothers in general are great in it (minus gaheris bc he isn't there RIP) but i adore how it expounds on his dynamic with mordred AND his aunt morgan. mordred and morgan are both schemers with plots against arthur and guinevere, morgan wanting revenge on her father gorlois' death and mordred having (in later episodes) vying for the throne, agravaine on the other hand is a lot more sincere and earnest. he had no ulterior motives and his undoing was his honesty. he loved his uncle arthur, and he meant well when he wanted to report guinevere and lancelot's affair to him, because he saw it as a betrayal on arthur, not an opportunity (like morgan and mordred). those two had to "corrupt" him in some way, which what happens during the guinevere apple murder trial because mordred and morgan essentially make agravaine an unwilling accomplice. its soooo so fascinating i highly recommend that show.

second, i'd love to talk about agravaine and mordred in henry newbolt's play: mordred, a tragedy 1895. genuinely has got to be one of my if not THE favorite retelling i've ever read. if anyone reading this hasn't, i'd just urge you to read it bc it's just that good. mordred is the main character as the title says, and agravaine is one of the main secondary characters, he takes on an almost paternal/guiding figure to a young yet incredibly idealistic, passionate mordred and acts as his voice of reason.

JAW DROP..... LIKE THIS SCENE WAS CRAZY. the earlier conversation where it was just them is top notch, and this kind of dynamic between agravaine and mordred is something i'd love to see more often.

BIG fan of agravaine essentially being the logical/reasonable one between his brothers. i've compared him to dinadan because i think they're similar characters (except obviously agravaine isn't a jester/bard like he is) but they function similarly, in my opinion.

my favorite headcanon is that he's got some sort of facial scarring and he's blind in one eye. for me personally it's no reason just vibes, in my project he's got some kinda magic sigil under his eye (he can't see through it though obviously)

and like, obviously as a disability it affects how he fights. one of my favorite things about him in vulgate is comparing how he navigates battle and combat in comparison to his brother gawain, he's a lot more careful and discerning in his encounters rather than just going berserker mode. you can see this in agravaine vs druas the cruel, i think

(in my lore he's referred to as sir agravaine the one eyed swordsman for this reason) and he's a lot more calculating and cunning in his fighting style, more relying on wits + terrain (funny the guy with one eye is more observant than most people)

nothing i haven't said earlier. for whatever reason he has this reputation for being a crazy misogynist (likely thanks to Fate/grand order because of his infamous over meme'd to the oblivion line about hating women) and also again because of T.H White's depiction of him. and whatever the hell BBC Merlin did to him.

i just really hate that kind of depiction of him and honestly? there's worse characters. breuse sans pite's whole thing is being a rapist, and geraint/erec spends the entire time in his respective romances brutalizing his wife enid.

free my man agravaine he doesn't deserve this slander 😭or at the very least, i would like to have more nuanced portrayals of him for variety.

I really like getting asks like these (assuming you meant the version of Forgo that I write in DDT) because it always challenges me to reveal something new about the character in question that I haven't said yet. ^^

So I looked through my file, and I found this interesting little piece I wrote to analyze Forgo's origins and character a bit. I originally wrote it to go with some artwork that I scrapped, featuring a younger Florine "experimenting" on (read: torturing) Fecto Elfilis after they were first imprisoned. I might try it again someday...but in case I don't, here's the text:

I was just thinking that Flo is the only member of the current Lab Discovera crew who is old enough to have been working there back when Fecto Elfilis first invaded their planet. Maybe F/E’s grudge against her could stretch back longer than I initially thought…? ^^

I was also thinking about the contents of Elfilin’s hallucinations in the Dream Discoveries Tour, and what they might mean.

I mean, of course I know what they mean; I just don’t think I’ve ever really thought about them beyond “test subject horrorcore”...I never stopped to consider the emotionality of those visions, the idea that the overwhelming fear and stress that Elfilin experiences when he sees them is probably just a small slice of what Fecto Elfilis went through.

Yes, they attacked first; yes, they probably had it coming. ^^; But just because you’re evil doesn’t mean you can’t suffer. I mean, when you think about the way F/E was split up (essentially, tormented into a dissociative fugue state) and the way Fecto Forgo’s “only refuge was the realm of their dreams” (direct quote from the game!)...to me, that paints a picture of someone trapped in such a hellish environment that the only way they can go on existing is to reject their own conscious mind. Become a different person that doesn’t remember the torture; sleep so deeply that you can’t feel the pain anymore, and pray that your captors finally leave you alone.

And the fact that we’re not told what the ‘incident’ was that caused F/E to split up kinda gives me “prisoner suddenly died in their holding cell” vibes. You’d think such a dramatic event would be important enough to explain a little more, but it’s just glossed over…as if the researchers don’t actually care. Like the test subject wasn’t even considered a valuable resource to them, it was just a fancy toy, and when it finally broke they decided they’d played with it enough anyway. Which fits with the way FF is portrayed as something “forgotten” and “abandoned” rather than purposely hidden or sealed away…

Basically, there’s a lot of little details that suggest to me that F/E was not treated humanely during their stay at the lab. ^^; A premise subtly baked into the story of DDT as a whole…

Oh my god yeyinde! Your latest fic with dog/definitely not dog!Johnny has been going through my brain nonstop since I read it. This may not be my most eloquently written praise as I’m sick, but I HAD to comment on the absolutely gothic, eerie beauty of this fic. I get deep mountain, Appalachian vibes- isolated, dark- a place your parents warned you NOT to move to (because there’s no way a homegrown Appalachian native would’ve let that dog into the house). I reads like a legend your grandparents would warn you about and you’d roll your eyes hearing it but then in the dead of might hear a dog howling in your yard and close your blinds and check your door locks remembering the story. It’s so eerie and brilliant- it reminds me of the image on tumblr associated with Margret Atwood’s poem “let now let us praise stupid women”. I’ll the image in my comment. But I love the fact she’s not naive- she knows it’s not her dog, but the idea of confronting it, dealing with it is almost more horrifying than just straight up denying it and going to sleep to pretend it’s not real. It’s haunting, devastating, bone-chill, and reads like a brilliant urban legend. You’re such an artist with words!

i love dog/animal/pet horror but i think it's sooo underutilized and poorly executed. there's something about the monster being your dog, your pet, that's infinitely more horrifying than some random, separate entity. your dog suddenly turning on you (or in this case, being taken over) is so terrifying to me. i also have an irrational fear of letting my dog outside at night and something else coming in. something that looks and acts just like him, but isn't. so!! there's that.

that's such a fitting poem too!!! it might not be everyone's fave but i love characters who refuse to accept reality until they're in the jaws of the beast. spinning themselves in circles as they struggle to come up with excuses for what they're seeing, or just not looking at it at all. brushing it under the rug. i just think the arc from "this is not happening everything is fine" to "everything needs to keep being fine and the only way to do that is to keep this thing happy so i can pretend it doesn't exist" is such a good plot point.

like, the slow pan from an obvious slaughter, a bloodbath, with the dogthing just licking it's paws like it normally does after eating, to them just numbly cleaning it up is beautiful. they ignore the missing posters stapled to the utilitypoles because everything is fine. he's just hungry. all dogs are. he just needs something wild to eat. it's fine if it's just a random animal. a stray. the neighbours dog just got away. it's not your boy. it can't be him. it's fine. everything is fine. it's their fault for getting too close to him. don't they know he doesn't like that? of course he'd snap. of course he'd eat them. he's just doing what dogs do.

he's a growing boy, of course he needs to eat.

you laugh and he feels his face heat up in annoyance. you and your stupid laugh. he's heard enough of it around the workplace while you chatted amongst the others. it was a sound he could live without.

"so hostile. we work together, y'know?" you grin. there's a glimmer of amusement in your eyes. you were getting on his nerves and you knew it.

"anyways, i just came to ask if you had a pen i could borrow. preferably not one with teeth marks." the last part is tacked on so briefly that johnathan didn't even have time to be offended about it before he replied.

he looks at you dead in the face. "sorry. i don't have an extra pen on me."

you glance at the completely untouched, unused, ballpoint pen on his desk and then back at him. he says nothing, staring at you silently, before you get the hint decide to go ask someone else.

it's not that serious to him. he can move on from a workplace crush. he however, can't move on from the fact you swooped in before he even got a chance. you never care to bring up that on your little coffee date with that person ended up being a disaster– maybe it was for the better they stayed away from him

"so," johnathan flinched away, about to walk out the glass doors of alchemax and head home for the day– only to find you with your back leaning against the frame, arms crossed. "heard you got put in charge over something pretty important."

"doesn't matter." you reply, shoving your hands in your pockets. "so... you're working on a portal thingy?"

"i'm one of the people overseeing it, yes." he huffs, trying to answer your questions quickly and just get the hell home. but as you figured, he had all the time in the world when it came to correcting you.

"and– the word portal is inaccurate."

you raise an eyebrow. "yeah?"

"it's a particle accelerator. you should know what that means. the goal of this project is to essentially create a passageway– a bridge, if you will– between two separate dimen–"

"so, a portal." you interrupt.

"just wanted to know. congrats, ohnn." you say casually, before exiting out the door.

the next time he sees you, he discovers that head scientist, olivia octavius who just so happens to be fond enough of your work to hear you out when you asked her decided it would be a good idea to have you work on the project as well.

even though johnathan was still technically still ahead of you– he kicked himself for how quickly you were beginning to catch up. you flashed him a grin from your desk as you began to help out on the project– he forced one back through gritted teeth.

▸ after tirelessly working on the project together as a team still trying your very best to outdo one another he figures this feud of yours is getting nowhere.

you've both spent sleepless nights on this project you both equally cared for,, it was time to just give up and be normal coworkers. an odd conclusion for johnathan to reach as a notorious grudge holder. maybe the lack of rest was getting to him, too exhausted to even deal with you anymore. or maybe, he was satisfied where he was right now– on the verge of a huge breakthrough with him being one of the main contributors– he no longer needed the pleasure of being better than you.

"how did you even get this number?" you ask, recognizing his voice through the phone as he greeted you.

"well, funny thing actually. alchemax has all the employee information on files, so i just–"

the realization hits you. "snooped through mine to get my phone number?! you're insane!"

he's desperate to explain, just trying to get to his point without getting a headache from you. "no, no, no– wait, i didn't come to fight or anything–"

"then what do you want, johnathan? a little medal? a trophy or somethin? you're probably getting that anyways after this whole thing– so,, so– what? what is it?!" you snap.

this is the only blatant hostility you've ever shown him. both ends of the call fall silent.

"wow uh– that was a lot." he mumbles awkwardly.

"...'m sorry." the shame makes your ears burn up. it is getting childish. you can't deny it.

he blinks at his phone, before bringing it back up to his ear. "did you just apologize? have i got the right person?"

it's your turn to groan. "are you trying to get me to take it back?"

"no! no, no, no– sorry." he replies quickly, stuttering as he tries to get back on track. "i just wanted to talk...."

the words hang in the air for much longer than needed.

"just spit it out already." you inturrupt.

"we should truce." he blurts out. "you know... maybe we should calm down. start over."

johnathan pauses for a moment, waiting for a reaction from you. you give him absolutely nothing. he takes a deep breath before speaking up again.

"i just thought it'd be better this way. this is getting ridiculous. and i think we're both mature enough to move past it so–"

"no, thank you."

he falters momentarily, processing what you had just said. "i'm– i'm sorry, i think misheard you."

"no, you heard me," you repeat, your smile clear as day in your voice, "no. thank. you."

"i like what we've got going on. keeps me motivated." the sweetness in your tone makes him cringe.

"you can't be serious." he rubs the bridge of his nose, fighting off the urge to lose his mind.

"oh, but i am." you lean into your phone's mic, voice dropping to a whisper. "just give me time. i'll catch up with you eventually."

your stubborness was truly something else.

"nope. can't do this, not today, nope–"

you laugh to yourself, hearing him hang up. you secretly hoped he'd at least keep talking to you a little longer. probably just a result of being a tad sleep deprived too.

and now, there you were, at his desk.

"need a pen?" he asks, looking up at you, expecting you to bother him again.

you shake your head. "actually, i came to ask for something else. i've been thinking about what you said..."

the words catch in your throat. you stare at the ground, the humiliation of what you're about to say causing you to fidget with your hands. he's never seen you like this– timid and anxious in his presence rather than smug and confident. it's a sight that he thought would bring him joy– but he's far beyond that now. instead, he looks at you curiously, not unlike the way he observes specimens.

"go on..." he says, leaning in slightly.

you meet his gaze sheepishly. "yeah. maybe a truce doesn't sound so bad."

he smiles back, cautious but hopeful. "you mean it?"

"this isn't me surrendering." you're quick to say, though your defensiveness falls flat, only causing his smile to fade for a moment. "i'm growing bored of it. we can just move on." it's not what he had in mind– but he'll take it.

"okay. sounds... good?" he replies awkwardly, unsure of what to do.

"mhm. so, you still have my phone number, right?"

For not canon stuff, Morgott and Melina lives in my head rent free. The way their stories parallel, the way their mannerisms would bounce off well, the tragedy of how they are basically doomed to be at odds.

I don’t think Melina is the common sense/braincell for the Tarnished. She’s the enabler. She is extremely curious about everything and lacks much knowledge of social cues of impulse control so she goes along with whatever we do because she also wants to see what will happen

Definitely any interactions with Shadow or Silver (Blaze as well imo), they both have a lot of potential with a lot of other characters and they're rarely ever used to the height of it :(((

I wanna see an adventure Silver and the chaotix sooo bad, sooooo bad. I just think Silver takes things a little too seriously and mix that with the chaotix hijinks ? It would be so fun I love them.

I would also murder to see more kid-centric stuff. I mean Tails, Charmy, Cream, and you can add Ray, Bean, and Kit if you want too. I wanna see the babies of the group have fun together, they deserve it. Can you imagine Tails affinity for building bombs, Beans affinity for using them, and Charmys affinity for seeing things explode, all being put in a room together ??? They'd be unstoppable, and so incredibly silly.

Also noting here, would love to see more of the Sonic girls together. They are underutilized, and it is a crime. This includes Marine, free my girl, she did nothing wrong.

Now as for Shadow. I wanna see him and Tails be friends. They're two of my favorite characters please let them be friends please please please please please please please. ok finished utopia uk. many mixed feelings about season 2, mainly about the quality of the writing. obviously the show never got finished so there's a chance that it could have all come together if the story had wrapped up, but so much of the middle of season two felt very written off the seat of their pants. meandering? throwing spaghetti at the wall. sooo many new characters introduced and discarded, so many main characters extremely underutilized, so many main characters playing reactionary roles rather than active ones. even though it's trying to be, for a lack of a better way to put it, hardcore with all the onscreen violence we see, it was difficult for me to take it seriously and i can't quite put my finger on why... season 2 felt VERY underbaked under the shiny surface (the gorgeous, visually stunning surface) so the themes of "do the ends justify the means or perhaps killing people... bad?" felt really stretched thin in a way that makes everything cartoonish if you so much as stop for a second to think about the logistics. which is fine, many great shows have asked for that level of suspension of disbelief, but what annoyed me about it is that it kept introducing high stakes situations (we have to find this one guy we know absolutely nothing about!) and resolving them frictionlessly in the same episode. also the "just kidding, the interesting, non-violent genocide is out, an actually straightforward violent genocide is IN" twist was really emotionally anticlimactic. to me. very that "satan's scarier older brother's friend's neighbor" vibe that people make fun of supernatural for. you get the feeling that the writers have a kind of childish morality underpinning the entire premise that robs the concept of all of the philosophical nuance it could have. i desperately wish i cared more about becky and ian but s2 felt like they were the main characters merely out of obligation. oh christ alive there's a 7 (seven. seven?!) hour video essay with millions of views on youtube i guess i'm watching that. anyway i love jessica and pietre with all of my heart wish i could pick them out of the narrative and like, actually develop their personalities. hilariously i now feel like rewatching mr robot because at least those characters did feel like real people who are not just puppets without lives when they are off-screen. sorry that's really mean to reiterate i REALLY liked the show fgjkdfgjkgjkdgkjdgkjdfgkjfdgjgdfdfgdj if i didn't i wouldn't be so frustrated with its shortcomings. also the soundtrack fucks tremendously. it has got to be said
