man’s talking abt “unhealthy obsession” meanwhile:

i got so obsessed with charles manson & squeaky fromme that they became my entire personality. i dyed my hair red for like four years bc of squeaky. i got a tattoo for squeaky. ive read a disturbing amount of books about both of them. I own handwritten letters from both of them. i can think of two separate occasions when I almost ruined a holiday and started swinging on a family member bc they were talking inaccurate shit about these two.

same goes for the several other similar figures I’m obsessed with. I have an entire WALL of memorabilia from/of them, costing truly hundreds of dollars (this is cool to me but apparently highly disturbing to everyone else). I have a copy of Jeffrey Dahmer’s fucking psych reports. I have a fucking piece of fabric used to make the shrouds the heavens gate cult members put over themselves. I’ve written 10+ page papers about some of these mfs. I turn into a feral animal when any of them are brought up, ready with too much knowledge and a desire to fact-check and rant and soapbox. I literally became so obsessed with all of these people i got a degree about it.

when i was 17 i became so obsessed with this one boy that i would sit at my desk for hours writing about him, just straight up filling pages and pages of a journal about him over and over again (this was actually TRUE mental illness i literally reread the pages later on and cried bc it was so sad and scary how out of my mind I was LOL😬). i bought a similar jacket to one he had so i could pretend it was his (this is actually my iconic army jacket; reclaimed). i literally did nothing but think and talk about him for probably at least a year and a half (& I STILL freak a little on the odd occasion that i see him, just on reflex).

I AM LITERALLY SO OBSESSED WITH MY PARTNER TOO HELLO? I talk about him so much and post so many pictures of him that he doesn’t even have to introduce himself to people bc they already know him from me. I live my entire life based around him in ways far too numerous to list and he knows it.

& there is SO much more. so it’s just a little bit funny that he’s worried that i like CH and topher too much bc i talk and think about it all the time; & bc i like to wear the gay little red hat from my topher costume (bc it’s “unhealthy to cosplay as a character all the time” meanwhile im constantly walking around with the riddler symbol on my army jacket and my clear glasses and he doesn’t see anything wrong with it; girl that’s almost full cosplay). compared to some of the aforementioned things above, im living quite the normal life.

read a post about there being next to no record abt the historic edward little again (we dont even know what he looked like!!!) and now im thinking a lot about how he died in uniform again.

hes far from the only character to die in uniform (the marines die in uniform! franklin dies in uniform!) and he isn't even the only lieutenant to do so (gore, under his slops, was in uniform; fairholme, too presumably; irving famously wore his coat that hickey steals later; george wore something that used to be his uniform when he got eaten but imo atp he did not wear it as A Uniform anymore that were just the clothes that he had on if that makes sense) but at the end, he is the only one where i still felt that it was an active choice to wear it.

almost everyone else sheds their layers along the way or turns into something else, but ned starts in uniform and he stays in uniform and that's it.

fitzjames famously sheds his vanity and dies in his shirtsleeves, without any of the pomp and pizzazz of his uniform.

jopson, another character who is to me really connected with a certain mindset of holding up appearances, dies in his shirtsleeves, believing himself abandoned by the very person that was his reason to even wear a uniform at all.

goodsir as a doctor/assistant surgeon doesn't really have a uniform in quite the same sense as many others but when he dresses himself before his suicide it is not as an affirmation of his role, or at least not a positive one. he has sworn to do no harm, but he was forced to do it anyway and now he will add a final evil to his toll of sins in the hopes to balance the scales at least somewhat and for that to work, he must wear his outfit as always. he ends up with all pretenses stripped bare anyway.

tozer, a man so proud of his uniform in the beginning, again, dies in his shirtsleeves, no rank left, betrayed by someone who had convinced him to give up everything and yet! reduced to nothing but an ordinary man, he tries again where before he had given up. he cooperates, he coordinates, he even calls crozier captain again, he tries very hard to do the right thing in what looks like a no win scenario from the get go!! and he fails, of course, but he tried.

almost everyone else also ends up either dressed down (bridgens, armitage, dundy, des voeux etc) or somehow transformed (blanky, to some extend silna with her patched and bloody furs) or in hickeys case, both (iconic underwear & greatcoat combo). little never changes. he sometimes has a little scarf, theres the bandage for his headwound for a bit, he sometimes wears the full parade uniform with epaulettes and sometimes just the regular one, there are at least two different uniform hats and ofc you can tell that he loses weight by the way his shape chages under all that wool but he is always. in. uniform.

and maybe this is just my mind making up dots to connect but i think he might even be the last character that crozier ever gives an order to in his official function as a captain (in the tuunbaq seduction/boss fight scene he has been stripped of his rank, at least according to e.c.).

before his final scene, all we get is little arguing over the orders they are given, and how to interpret them. and he is still wearing his uniform!!! wait hold on im not gonna check but maybe he might only wear a jumper in the tent where dundy lauches his soft mutiny actually, so maybe this whole post is crumbling like a domino line but!!! ignoring this. moving on. (even if it is a jumper i remember him wearing sth dark blue aka Uniform Colour so im claiming it doesnt even matter bc spiritually that hypothetical jumper still is a uniform. im not going to let anything like "accuracy" and "real details" fuck up my post smh 🙄. im joking. however! he doesnt even dress up for carnivale! the only other characters that are not in costume are jopson and crozier and they were literally too busy keeping crozier from dying to even begin thinking about joining the communal arts and crafts session! little is atp the acting no2 of the expedition so u might say he was busy but fitzjames has the overall command and still finds time to have a little gender moment in private and the imperialism-approved version of it for the Big Crowd!! (u could ofc argue that fitzy Always has time for a gender moment and who would i be to argue but my point is: i have no doubt that man was fucking busy preparing carnivale & beginning to prepare the walkout and there still was time to Express Some Character!! so how come ned didn't do anything?)

the one other scene we get where we can catch a small glimpse of characters out of their element before it all unravels (pre tuunbaq attack on the camp) is the scene at night when morfin gets shot. it shows lots of characters in various states of undress (silna big blanket burrito i love you) that allows us to see them differently, like their costumes at carnivale did, but in an entirely opposite direction. while carnivale was about putting on masks, this scene is about taking them off. and it drives me insane because i know that little must be there. he is somewhere in the crowd when morfin gets shot but so far i havent been able to make him out and i need to know what he is wearing so bad. it is actually for science (my own curiosity) ! i really need to know. and i cant help but feel that maybe it is intentional that he is just ~somewhere~ instead of In Front of the Fucking Camera because, well. that would be just ned little, wouldnt it? and we dont even know who that is.

What’s in a name (Haruaki’s, specifically)

It’s 3am, the JP raws for ch101 have come out but the CN ones haven’t so I can’t start working on the chapter, so I have time to think about nonsense.

As you know, “Abe Haruaki” and “Abe no Seimei” use the same kanji. That’s like, the whole thing. The fundamental gimmick of the manga.

The thing is, this tiny detail has different implications when it’s translated to another language, and makes reading the manga in Japanese, Chinese and English 3 entirely different experiences. (Besides just being 3 different languages, of course)

Japanese is unique in its use of furigana for kanji, the little text beside or above a character to tell you how it’s read, a sort of addendum, though it’s also used to add a nuance to it. For example, sometimes the kanji will be a person’s name, but the furigana would say “that idiot”.

(^ This is a furigana joke. In this case, 晴明 is the kanji and “scum” is the furigana.)

This is an entirely natural and unobtrusive part of a Japanese publication, but there’s not a real way to translate it into English entirely. (The options are entirely rephrasing what the furigana says, or to add it in brackets after the word, which stands out and ends up occupying as much space as the original word.)

Translating Japanese to Chinese is a unique language pair, especially in this case, where only the kanji is preserved and the reading of the kanji is abandoned. No matter what the furigana says, how characters are actually pronouncing his name, it is simply written and read as 晴明 (qingming). Any distinction between “Abe Haruaki” and “Abe no Seimei” in the actual text itself is lost, and the only way a Chinese reader would know there ever was a difference would be if another reader left a comment explaining it. Surely, that’s a different sort of nuance than what the Japanese text conveys.

The English translation, however, goes the opposite direction (and this is probably true for every other language that’s not Chinese). It preserves only the pronunciation of the name, and the fact that it uses the same kanji is lost, relegated to an afterthought, a neat bit of trivia in a translation note. It erases any connection between “Haruaki” and “Seimei”, leaving the surname to be the only similarity. This, surely, is yet another different sort of nuance.

The Chinese version that preserves only the kanji and erases any distinction between the two readings, the English version that emphasizes the distinction and removes the connection that the kanji provides, and the Japanese original text, the middle ground. Inevitably, I’m sure just the way his name is presented conveys a different impression of the story and leaves readers with different understandings of it.

I have noticed this in practice too, where snarky remarks about “Oh, another Abe no Seimei manga?” start at page 1 or even the synopsis for the Chinese translation (basically, as soon as his name appears), whereas the same remarks for the English version only start once Abe no Seimei is mentioned directly by name. (I don’t have a personal anecdote for the Japanese version mostly because I don’t know where to find these sorts of comments)

Although this has been present since the start, I feel like it’s all the more relevant in the recent chapters over the past year, where Abe no Seimei has been established as an actual character beyond being just a name that’s brought up sometimes, and the similarities and differences between him and Haruaki called to attention and central to the story multiple times. (In chapter 101 too, which is why I’m writing this in the first place.)

At the end of the day, this is just my perspective as someone who mainly reads the English version, fairly comfortable with Chinese and trying to learn Japanese. My takeaway of this story will inevitably be different from someone who only reads the Chinese version, and both would be different from someone who only reads the Japanese version. Actually, everyone who reads the English version probably has a different reading of the story. I’ll just never know where the tiny differences lie, and the closest I can get is by reading people’s written comments and opinions.

Anyway. Isn’t it interesting the different nuances the way Haruaki’s name is presented can convey, whether you’re aware of it or not? (Well you’re aware of it now. The burden of knowledge)

Addendum: Something I learned from “Learning Japanese” videos

(Spoiler: it wasn’t Japanese. God I wish it was. This shit is hard)

I wasn’t aware of this until it was pointed out to me, but you probably don’t read out every single English word in your head. By which I mean, you don’t have to sound out every single word, otherwise reading would take way longer and this way, you’re also able to skim over long words that maybe you don’t know. At the point you’re fluent enough in English to be reading rambles on obscure manga on tumblr, individual alphabets don’t even register and you’re probably recognizing words by their shape. I don’t know if this concept is taught for languages that use the same writing system as English (I don’t have personal experience with that), but I do know Chinese is like that too, and of course, Japanese. (This ends up being relevant to Haruaki’s name I swear)

Thing is, while furigana is normal for publications, it’s not used in most other situations, like tweets and, importantly, handwritten text unless it’s REALLY significant.

Which brings us to situations in the manga where there’s handwritten asides that mention Haruaki’s name only by kanji. The translator just has to guess, like if it’s said by one of the students it’s probably “Seimei”, if Haruaki’s referring to himself it would be “Haruaki” but in situations like this where it’s an objective note and not from the POV of anyone, I’m always unsure. (I tend to default to “Haruaki” but the official translator usually defaults to “Seimei” I think)

Fact of the matter is, it’s possible sensei has a reading in mind when she writes it, but it’s just as possible she doesn’t. It is text after all, where the shape of the words holds more importance than how it’s read out loud. And in situations where Abe no Seimei isn’t in the picture, how Haruaki’s name is read really isn’t that important in the grand scheme of things (because you know who it’s referring to, it is still important from a story perspective)

(The tweets thing also reminds me, because you can’t differentiate “Haruaki” and “Seimei” by kanji alone, Japanese tweets call Abe no Seimei “晴明公” (Sir Seimei?) or “先祖晴明” (ancestor Seimei). Or actually just referring to Haruaki by ☀️ and Seimei by 祖.)

Shu Itsuki has a few bad habits, including the fact that he doesn’t realize how heart fluttering they can be

You’re this old already how haven’t you learned how to eat properly yet?’ Shu always presses your cheeks between his elegant fingers, takes his napkin, and wipes off the remains of your cinnamon bun while scolding you. His hands feel a little cold but soft and after knowing him for so long you can only hear the warmth in his voice. You can’t help but think it’s a little unfair—he’s already talking to you about something different while your heart is still pounding in your chest.

ఌ His bad habits also follow the both of you out in public. It looks like there’s a brand new craft store across the street from the cafe, though it’s wares look a little cheap it’s still worth a trip inside! You always have to walk a little faster to keep pace with Shu when he spots something interesting, smiling slightly while listening to him talk about how long lasting cashmere can be if you treat your clothing with care. When you can’t fast enough Shu finds himself sighing and grabbing your wrist to make sure you don’t fall behind. ‘It’s important for you to know these things! And you’re walking to slowly! How can you do your job properly if you can’t manage to make it from one end to the other without assistance?’ Because he’s still walking ahead of you, you can safely give him a lovelorn look, why does he hold your wrist but not your hand?

ఌ Possibly his worst habit rears it’s head in the small craft store aisles……besides openly criticizing the fabric and jewelry making supplies for being stiff and unmanageable. There’s many other customers looking for ways to begin their seamster journeys. Too many. Whether Shu is a repellent or you are a magnet—people just won’t stop bumping into you. The thread aisle, the button aisle, the velcro aisle…Shu begins to huff like it was your fault. Placing an arm around your side he pulls you out of the way of another shopper, bumping your shoulders together. ‘Won’t you pay a little more attention?’ As if you could in a situation like this. His soap has just the faintest scent of linen & peonies, even though he smells like laundry in an open field something about it reminds you of star gazing. The only thing keeping you grounded is the feeling of his hand around your upper arm keeping you out of “harms way”. It might be a blessing that he has a bad habit of not noticing when he manages to make you feel so flustered. ‘Stand right next to me. Ah, I can’t take you anywhere.’ …..He really has a bad habit of saying that, too.

i keep thinking abt the like. pacing of the previous fight scenes being reused in ep9 in such a smart way…………like with smith/lulu v superbia - isami/bravern v cupiridas AND with smith/lulu v knuth - isami/bravern v pessimism/vanitas they kept doing the quick jumps between each of the two fights in a way that made it clear that isami and smith were in conversation even if they were doing completely different shit, and then bringing that completely to the forefront this ep while isami is asking smith why he died and at the same time smith is refusing to die bc of his promise with isami. kinda crazy to me that my 2nd and 3rd most kudosed fics are mythic quest ones. like it's such a small fandom, it's wild that they're beating out dr who ones since those are a) much older and b) from a much more popluar fandom/ship. you could probably argue that the mq ones are just better written (and that would be true lmao) but i think it also goes to show how hungry mq fans are for fic (and how many people are simply lurking rather than actively engaging in the fandom bc I swear here on tumblr it's like the same 10 people posting about it)
