Previous First
He wakes up
He doesn't know what day it is or what time it is
He wakes and has only one thought on his mind
Tumblr media
"I'm fucking pissed"
He knows he gets cranky when he gets hungry but this is something else.
He knows how it is, he will die soon
So why shouldn't he be a little hater in the meantime
This situation just sucks. Dying from thirst is so unglamorous.
This house? Wack. The art? Wack. The architecture? Wack.
If it wasn't because he didn't know how to start a fire, he would, indeed, set this place on fire
He knows what he can do.
After doing things that he'd rather not repeat to keep his water levels vaguely estable, he stands up and walks, with purpose this time, he is looking for something
And he finds it
Tumblr media
The femur is a human's strongest bone
"I don't know who your owner is, Mr Femur, but I'm sure this will be cathartic to both of us"
He is walking again
He finds a suitable target
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Here comes Oliver Beebo, our rising star this season. He gets ready to swing aaand..."
"He absolutely smashes it!!! It's a homerun-goal-checkmate whatever the fuck, he wins!!"
"I fucking win"
He does it again to the rest of the heads. It's exhilarating, and moves to the next room
He's walking only through adrenaline and spite
Tumblr media
He sees another graffiti from his friend, anonymous graffiti-er.
He wonders if this is their femur. He hopes they are happy looking it be used for good.
Down with the system, you are so right graffiti person, I will make you proud
He smashes with a smile on his face
He finds a familiar room
The ceramic crime scene
Now it's gonna look like a real tragedy
Tumblr media
He wonders if the ghosts of the house are watching him right now
He hopes they're are
He can almost hear them
Giving him encouragement, clapping for him, shouting in joy where he can't
He will join them soon, he knows this
He will make a grand entrance
"Enjoy the show, fellas. I'll be there soon for any interviews"
He already feels like one of them
He's happy
Although
Part of him hopes he's alone
He hopes that everyone else managed to leave, to pass on.
He hopes no one else is trapped like him
He doesn't know any of this people, and he loves them
"We are brothers now"
He walks, locally grown bat by his side, when he finally sees it
His primary target
Tumblr media
The map
Always there, a constant presence
Mocking him
His brain is not the most logical right now, but who cares? He has three femurs and a quickly approaching expiration date
He knows what he wants to do
Tumblr media
The frame shatters into pieces
He hits it over and over again, until the frame falls
He takes the paper and rips it with his own hands
He even bites it a little
He wished he could put it on fire, but he'll settle for leaving it absolutely non recognizable
He feels full of energy, borrowed from adrenaline
He feels amazing. He feels successful. He just ...!!
Something feels
Right
He's tired, but he won't rest
He doesn't plan to stop until he's forced to rest
He is going down swinging, Goddammit!
He goes to open another door
"I'll have all the time in the world to rest when I drop de-"
Tumblr media
He's outside
He's... He's outside?
The sun is so bright
He hears something behind him
A meow?
Looking behind him, he sees... a lot
Is the main room, the one he came in.
There's the cat, meowing, he takes it
"Poor boy, he's definitely hungry, but still looks healthier than me, hah"
Behind is... everything
Tumblr media
All the trash, art, bones, corpses, and mysterious substances that he found in the multiple rooms
His blue jacket is there, he thought he lost it forever
He doesn't take it
Some things he hadn't even encountered are there
It's... It's a lot
He puts the femur with the pile
He quietly thanks it
In between the... everything, he sees a can of spray paint
Must be empty
He feels like he lost a friend
He says goodbye to everyone
He think he hears them say it back
He goes back to the closest city, it's early morning
He leaves the cat in a vet and himself in a hospital.
The cat was delivered to the owner the next day
For his sacrifice and high amount of trauma in the act of cat-searching, he got paid the amazing quantity of
20 dollars
He got himself the most expensive and delicious ice cream 20 dollars can buy
It was really good
And a great way to repress memories
He tells people something fell on him while he was in that house, and that's why he couldn't escape for 2 days
Sometimes he believes it too
He makes a formal and stern petition to have that house be demolished. Seeing the multiple bones inside and Oliver's story of the events, they quickly accept it.
The house is gone shortly after
He doesn't know if there were ghosts in there or not. He could have been very well just hallucinating anything due to his poor, poor mental and physical health.
He still misses them

PSA: i keep seeing posts about staying cool in extreme heat that include advice like "gatorade is bad actually!" and "don't drink fruit juice it'll just dehydrate you!" and neither of these are true!
regarding fruit juice: there's apparently a misconception that Any Sugar At All will dehydrate you, and that's simply not true. yes, sugar will make you pee more when consumed in large amounts, but 1) the natural sugar in fruits won't do this to you 2) great news! a lot of fruit juices exist without any added sugar in them! 3) honestly even having a glass of the fruit juice with added sugar won't completely dehydrate you as long as you're also drinking water throughout the day. if its hot you deserve a cold treat of a drink!!! can't go wrong with fruit juice!!!
regarding gatorade: maybe this isn't an every day drink, but guess what: if it's 110F/40C or hotter outside, and you don't have AC, or you're moving around a lot outside of the AC, and you're sweating buckets: that's when you drink a gatorade.
gatorade exists to replenish all the electrolytes (salt) and glucose (sugar) that you sweat out. YES it is meant for athletes to drink during intensive work outs and not necessarily for people who aren't doing that kind of exercise. BUT GUESS WHAT! when you're sweating buckets because you had to walk to the bus in extreme heat, that's intensive exercise. please feel free to drink a gatorade after that! that's its intended use case!!!!
no: neither of these drinks should be a total replacement for water. but drinking a lot of water and then treating yourself to a fruit juice with lunch is a good idea!!! drinking a gatorade becuase you just had to walk for 20 minutes in the heat is a good idea!!!
Please Stop Spreading Misinformation About Drinks!!! It's fine if you drink things that aren't water!!!! Yes you should probably always be drinking water but drinking something else As Well isn't going to hurt you!!!! okay!!!! its fine!!!!!!
honestly so long as you are consistently getting Any (non-alcoholic) fluids in you, you're doing great!!!!!! okay!!!! i love you stay safe <3

the fact that shakespeare was a playwright is sometimes so funny to me. just the concept of the "greatest writer of the English language" being a random 450-year-old entertainer, a 16th cent pop cultural sensation (thanks in large part to puns & dirty jokes & verbiage & a long-running appeal to commoners). and his work was made to be watched not read, but in the classroom teachers just hand us his scripts and say "that's literature"
just...imagine it's 2450 A.D. and English Lit students are regularly going into 100k debt writing postdoc theses on The Simpsons screenplays. the original animation hasn't even been preserved, it's literally just scripts and the occasional SDH subtitles.txt. they've been republished more times than the Bible
#due to the Great Data Decay academics write viciously argumentative articles on which episodes aired in what order#at conferences professors have known to engage in physically violent altercations whilst debating the air date number of household viewers#90% of the couch gags have been lost and there is a billion dollar trade in counterfeit “lost copies”#serious note: i'll be honest i always assumed it was english imperialism that made shakespeare so inescapable in the 19th/20th cent#like his writing should have become obscure at the same level of his contemporaries#but british imperialists needed an ENGLISH LANGUAGE (and BRITISH) writer to venerate#and shakespeare wrote so many damn things that there was a humongous body of work just sitting there waiting to be culturally exploited...#i know it didn't happen like this but i imagine a English Parliament House Committee Member For The Education Of The Masses or something#cartoonishly stumbling over a dusty cobwebbed crate labelled the Complete Works of Shakespeare#and going 'Eureka! this shall make excellent propoganda for fabricating a national identity in a time of great social unrest.#it will be a cornerstone of our elitist educational institutions for centuries to come! long live our decaying empire!'#'what good fortune that this used to be accessible and entertaining to mainstream illiterate audience members...#..but now we can strip that away and make it a difficult & alienating foundation of a Classical Education! just like the latin language :)'#anyway maybe there's no such thing as the 'greatest writer of x language' in ANY language?#maybe there are just different styles and yes levels of expertise and skill but also a high degree of subjectivity#and variance in the way that we as individuals and members of different cultures/time periods experience any work of media#and that's okay! and should be acknowledged!!! and allow us to give ourselves permission to broaden our horizons#and explore the stories of marginalized/underappreciated creators#instead of worshiping the List of Top 10 Best (aka Most Famous) Whatevers Of All Time/A Certain Time Period#anyways things are famous for a reason and that reason has little to do with innate “value”#and much more to do with how it plays into the interests of powerful institutions motivated to influence our shared cultural narratives#so i'm not saying 'stop teaching shakespeare'. but like...maybe classrooms should stop using it as busy work that (by accident or designs)#happens to alienate a large number of students who could otherwise be engaging critically with works that feel more relevant to their world#(by merit of not being 4 centuries old or lacking necessary historical context or requiring untaught translation skills)#and yeah...MAYBE our educational institutions could spend less time/money on shakespeare critical analysis and more on...#...any of thousands of underfunded areas of literary research i literally (pun!) don't know where to begin#oh and p.s. the modern publishing world is in shambles and it would be neat if schoolwork could include modern works?#beautiful complicated socially relevant works of literature are published every year. it's not just the 'classics' that have value#and actually modern publications are probably an easier way for students to learn the basics. since lesson plans don't have to include the#important historical/cultural context many teens need for 20+ year old media (which is older than their entire lived experience fyi)

does anyone have like an anti aesthetic. like something you look at and can recognize as a complete fashion/interior design/artistic movement and understand it but it makes you shudder seeing it. i am not talking like “its morally bad” “its poorly structured” like just sheerly devoid of joy for you actually invites a repulse response.

You use "arospec people can still date and feel romantic attraction " as an excuse to ship cannon aro characters , I use it as justification to headcannon characters who canonically feel romantic attraction as arospec , we are not the same

It's crazy how Dungeon Meshi's manga can feel more cinematic and emotional than the anime to me, even when they're practically the same. Compared to the anime, this moment is such a heartbreaking gut-drop. The way Kui uses negative space and flat compositions to create a sense of horrific stillness is so key.
The way the text (Senshi's monologue) is sequestered to an empty corner of a panel or huddled away from the edge of its text box is not only a great way of showing Senshi's headspace (fearful, isolated, dissociating), but creates a visual representation of pause, as if you hold your breathe after each line. The first panel puts us directly in Senshi's perspective too (compared to in the anime, which puts us as an outside observer over Senshi's shoulder). The detail of the door and bricks so effectively implies that he stared at it for so long, waiting and hoping, that its image is burned in his memory. The wood grain, the brick arch, the number of rivets. The lack of dialogue in the second panel shows a moment of realization too –– "he's dead" (also a great example of the Kuleshov effect). And it's that pause that creates a beat and sets a great rhythm to his headspace, like a music rest: "He never came back." (oh god.) "I'm all alone." Finally, the third panel's negative space, cropping Senshi, shows how truly alone he feels. Without his family, the world ceases to exists. Under shock, he traps himself in a 1-foot radius, too scared to even perceive a world outside its boundaries; a world that can hurt him, kill him, make him disappear with it. There is only his body, the stone beneath his feet and against his back, his thoughts, and that awful bowl of soup.
Even though they're a series of flat images, there's an implicit reading of silence in Senshi's realization and horror. Kui influences your experience to slow down and take your time.
Compare this to the anime, which fills every shot with dialogue. The pacing is fast; we never get to sit in silence like we do with the manga. The horizontal frame allowed the boarders to add Senshi, turning the composition into an over-the-shoulder shot, which takes us out of Senshi's POV. They also added a zoom-out in shot one, which adds unnecessary energy to a very somber scene. The tightening on Senshi as a close-up reaction shot also dulls the moment. In the original panel, Senshi stares ahead at the empty space to his left as a shadow surrounds his mind. It not only shows how Senshi's senses are dulling and his world is shrinking (setting up panel three), but shows how terrified Senshi is of what's in front of him, how the air itself becomes pitch black and opaque, how Senshi is surrendering himself to fear. The pacing is understandable and necessary; this episode packed a lot of story content together. It's just a shame because it really (imo) deflated one of the most nauseating moments in Dungeon Meshi.

*merlins magic gets exposed in front of the knights*
merlin, magic user: oh fuck
arthur, finally taking this opportunity to pretend as if he just found out merlin has magic after agonizing for the past month on how to bring it up: you have magic?
lancelot, merlin defender, already knew of merlin’s magic: no! i have magic
gwaine, merlin defender, already knew of merlin’s magic, lover of chaos, ride or die: no, i have magic!
mordred, desperate for his hero’s approval bc no matter what he’s done emrys just stares at him with distrust and the poor boy is tired and so close to tears: no…i have magic.
percival, raised by druids and bonded strongly with mordred over that and does Not agree with the persecution of magic in camelot, had an inkling that merlin had magic but no proof: no. i have magic.
*leon and elyan exchange a look, elyan, amused and leon, exhausted, elyan shrugs*
elyan, knows how much gwen adores merlin and completely understands her stance bc merlin…is merlin, down to clown and put on a show, really playing up the dramatics: no! i have magic.
leon, exhausted, has known of merlin’s magic since he stepped foot in camelot, knows of his feelings for arthur and arthur’s feelings for him, knows arthur knows of merlin’s magic and wouldn’t harm him, thinks everyone is being absolutely ridiculous:
*the knights stare hard at leon and even merlin looks slightly offended at leon not jumping to his defense with the rest of the knights, arthur hasn’t said anything and is staring at leon expectantly*
leon, sighing: …no. i have magic.

When you go, your footprints will fill with grass. Moss shall cover your tombstone, and as the sun rises, green shall spread over all, in all its shades and hues. This verdigris will overtake your swords and your coins and your battlements and, try as you might, all you hold dear will succumb to it. Your skin, your bones. Your virtue - The Green Knight 2021
