Album Discussion- Shinjuku Mad

Usually on a Tuesday I like to take my time with a blog post. Listen to a full album, do a little research, put some real effort into it.

Unfortunately, time is not my ally today. So I kinda have to do one that’s a bit easier- in this case, I think I’d rather go after one of the ones that’s already on my phone, in case I have to do this on the bus or something.

Today we’re going to go into a self-titled album that is somehow not the artist’s debut. Rather, Shinjuku Mad is the second of two albums released under the name- the reason I specify as such is that one of the two (and later, the vocalist would help out again) members would go on to relative fame under a different name- Vaportrap pioneer Blank Banshee.

Peering into this album is like looking at a beta version of what was to come. It’s very much a different genre, an IDM album that completely predates Vaporwave’s explosion of popularity and Blank Banshee’s seminal album, Blank Banshee 0. It’s a solid enough album in addition to this, but it’s kind of hard to talk about seeing as there’s basically nobody who knows about Shinjuku Mad that didn’t learn about it through Blank Banshee. As such, expect a lot of BB coming up in this post.

Also a block of words, because no music videos exist for this at all. It’s one of those obscure albums.

This album opens on Cure for Fear. It’s one of those introductory tracks you often get in albums, at about a minute and a half long, with very reverb-y percussion and vocals and an almost ethereal haze of noise. It’s got these chimes that occasionally come up, reminiscent of some of the tracks from the AKIRA soundtrack, but beyond that there’s not a huge amount going on here. It does introduce a problem, however, one which we’ll get to later. It’ll be pretty evident if you’re listening along, though.

Track 2: Kowloon. I really did forget how short a lot of these songs were, with this being 2:13- the whole 10-track album clocks in at under half an hour. There’s a mix of drum machine and hollow wood percussion on this track that gives it a really interesting sort of feel, and some of the effects on the vocals feel extremely vaporwave- it’s no surprise that the dude behind this went on into that genre. Here’s where I can’t help but hammer on that issue I mentioned earlier, though.

The vocals on this album are quite weak. I know they’re very much trying to be ethereal, the reverb and falsetto make that much clear, and that style very much suits the instrumentation. But it just doesn’t sound great. It kinda comes and goes, but by and large I’d label them as subpar. I don’t really think it’s the fault of the performance either, it’s not like the bloke is missing his lines or mumbling more than is necessary for the album’s aesthetic, but there’s just something about them. They might be too loud in the mix for this kind of genre? I’m not 100% sure.

Resistor, the third track, is the best known song from this album by an order of magnitude. I mean that quite literally, as the track as over 540,000 monthly listens on Spotify as compared to Kowloon’s 32000. It’s kind of shocking, I mean for such an obscure album with zero singles, why is this of all tracks the one people suddenly latched onto?

As it turns out, it’s because again of the artist’s future work as Blank Banshee. Resistor would be reworked into one of the more popular tracks from BB0, Dreamcast, and it would appear that people got curious as to what the source was.

The thing is, aside from sharing a vocal performance, the tracks are very different. As it is, Resistor is a much faster track than the previous, driven by this fast percussion and bassline, making for a genuinely solid exercise track of all things (I say from experience). It’s got a fun little synth solo in the middle, the vocals are pretty solid (aside from like right at the end of the last chorus, holy shit), and the song’s coda and outro are a fun little bit of controlled chaos. I’d put Resistor as one of the better tracks on the album, is what I’m saying.

I’m going to do something I haven’t done in a while when discussing music on this blog- I’m going to jump through a few things. As much as I like this album, the songs aren’t nearly interesting enough to justify a song-by-song breakdown. I think if you listen to Resistor and like it, it’s probably worth chucking on the rest of the album- it is, again, less than half an hour long. But its an album where it’s more valuable on a meta level than it is sonically.

Shinjuku Mad as an album feels a lot like a hybrid between older IDM trends and the synth/vaporwave elements that would become popularised in the 2010s. There’s also tracks like Inductor, which border on rock songs with the power behind that bassline and percussion- in general much of the instrumentation is cleaner than you’d expect from an artist like this, especially considering how muddied much of the vocals get. There is a real focus on the vocals, which as I’ve discussed is a weakness of the album, but I do think it’s possible to look past that issue. There’s some really fun synth lines, some excellent percussion, and real aesthetic. Songs like Human Wave Attack feel stark and lonely, notes echoing into the void, which ironically is not at all like Track 4, Void- with synths and vocals disguising a guitar and drum line that feels extremely garage band. As in, the concept, not the program. Singularity is a song that feels again predictive of Blank Banshee���s future work, a low, slow synth track reminiscent of BB songs like Hyper Object or Metamaterial.

There are some genuine gems on here in addition to Resistor, though. City of No Tomorrow, the eighth song, has got to be one of my favourites- somehow, despite featuring none of the instrumentation typical of the genre, it’s extremely cyberpunk, a sense of struggle and futility resonant through the track. It’s the one song on the album I listen to regularly, getting myself lost in the groove of the bass and tapping my foot along to the percussion. It’s just really good, man.

If this isn’t your first time encountering Shinjuku Mad, reading this might cause you to go back and have another listen, upon which you may notice a few somethings missing. I don’t expect that to be the case for literally anyone reading this…but I needed a segue. This is because, upon the reintegration of Shinjuku Mad and its predecessor Organic Thoughts from the Synthetic Mind into Hologram Bay’s catalogue for the 2019 reissue, two songs were cut, likely for fears of legal issues regarding sampling. The version of this album that I remember has those tracks!

Those songs are Negatives (formerly track 6) and Neon Exodus (formerly track 12). Negatives is another one that’d show up as a Blank Banshee track (in this case, Gunshots), and is actually really solid? Like it integrates a raid siren into the instrumentation without having it sound weird, out of place, or, well, alarming. Neon Exodus is…wow I just don’t know this track at all. It’s fuckin aesthetic though. Welcome to this spontaneous live-reaction, I guess. I recognize the sample this is built around (and thereby why it isn’t on the album anymore) but I cannot name it for the life of me. It’s, uh, interesting. I dunno, 6.5/10?

Anyway, part of the reason I bring this up is that before I want to close this out I have some complaining to do. Said 2019 reissue was something I tracked at the time, and noticed both SM albums were releasing on Vinyl, Cassette (because, you know, nerds), and digitally. But not CD. I threw an email at the website about it, and they did eventually respond (it genuinely took like two months though), but not in the positive. The reissue had no plans to include a CD, unlike all three previous Blank Banshee albums.

But the original 2010 version of the album, along with a few slight differences in songs and in album order, does have a CD release, albeit an extremely limited one, according to Discogs. These CDs have to exist, they’re now listed on the new Shinjuku Mad website. Apparently one sold 6 months ago through Discogs. I need to find a copy, though considering on that site 7 people list it as owned and 72 (including myself) list it as wanted, it’s probably not going to happen.

And that, ultimately, is Shinjuku Mad. It’s a very odd piece of history as far as vaporwave goes, considering it’s both a prototype and also something completely, utterly different. The album is pretty decent on its own, but not mindblowing, and something you could probably live without. There are like two tracks (three if you include Negatives) that are 100% worth it, but the rest are skippable. Which is a shame, but mediocre music has to exist somewhere, right?

That I apparently haven’t discussed Blank Banshee on this blog before (aside from when I was talking about Vaperror) is actually kind of shocking. I suppose, then, that there might be some lacking context. I probably will have to do that at some point, though I probably won’t do BB0 because I like picking the hipster options- so either BB1 or MEGA. Metamorphosis didn’t really pique my interest, and I somehow missed GAIA existing in the first place and still haven’t listened to it. So if you’re interested in seeing me ramble over some of that, I’ll see you then. I mean, it’ll still happen if you aren’t interested, but nobody’s going to make you read it.

I’m very unsatisfied with my weight. I weigh about 195 pounds, and am working to drop to 120 pounds. I don’t feel attractive in my skin. I can’t see my vag anymore.

I haven’t orgasmed ever. I am 24 fucking years old. Why the fuck haven’t I cum yet? God..

Happier topics, Mare. Okay. There is this app I use called SLOWLY, where you create a username, and bio about yourself. You can start sending letters to people across the world. I’ve had letters coming in from China, India especially, the U.K., Australia, Taiwan, Russia, Portugal, tip of Africa. So many letters. And, you do get standard. ‘Yo baby. Send me nudes.’ This one guy got clever and asked me for nudes in Morse Code. I kindly sent him back to go fuck himself. The only person who gets to see my beautiful breasts is me, and the barren vag, cause I swear to myself, I never ever see Nic. (<– Sorry. No talk of guys for the next few paragraphs). The issue is.. like, there is an option where you can send three letters at a time. With an intro letter. One night, I thought it would he fun (WORST. MISTAKE. EVER.) to send 15 letters. (Keep in mind about 4 of the many letters I have sent, do I keep up a regular correspondence with. So, add 15 potential regular friends, and you have a recipe for disaster). Omgosh, Charlie + readers: I never have time to respond to these letters. Damnit, me. Why the fuck did you do that?

Okay. I started a new job. Yeah. You heard right. The ever so fucking afflicted depressed, intoroverted, frustrated, book crazy, bisexual who cant hold down a job, found a new one. Through a temp agency. I work with ______ _____ ____, at _____ _____, which is just 10 minutes from my house. The job is way better than the piece of shit I put up with for 6 mths. I love the different calls we get. But the mother fucking training at this call centre was mother flipping shit. There are so many 'processes’ you have to remember when helping a 'guest’ with a request that I want to cry. (I hope I keep at the job). Please fucking pray for me.

Did you know I didn’t always used to curse the way I do? Throughout high school, I would only curse when I would get hurt (like for example that time an anvil crushed my toe. Lol. This totally didnt happen. Though, this one time. I cut myself on this chunk of thick glass from a broken lamp at 12 urs old, that I was taking to the dumpster. It sliced my thigh, blood was gushing out I imagine. I started screaming. My mom, uncle, and cousin freaked the fuck out. I obviously lived to tell the tale. Y'all should see the scar.) And then I was influenced by boys (since I only hung out with guys through the last two years of high school) to curse. And now, I can’t seem to stop.

What other facts to share.. I made a friend on Slowly, but work really got me busy, plus I am always freaking tired. I didn’t respond for nine days with a letter, and I noticed she deactivated her account. It really hurt. Her name was Becca. She was trans, but didn’t tell her crazy conservative family. 19, super sweet. Liked video games and Eminem for a bit. I seriously miss her.

Other facts.. Did I mention (no, of course you didn’t mention Mare. All you ever talk about are failed relationships, current relationships, or almost relationships), I’m looking to learn Italian AND Spanish? Of course! Why the hell wouldn’t I try to influence my American self with my Mexican self? (Totally Hispanic in case y'all cohldn’t guess. My mom says I speak Spanish like a white girl. Well, shit… Time to go to Mexico and get ridiculed for being too white and not knowing Spanish or customs) Joking aside, I’m looking forward to teaching myself Spanish and Italian. (Don’t tell the family, but I prefer Italy over Mexico).

Y'all ready to get to the real reason why y'all stick through my letters?

Nic doesn’t want me to explore my bi side. Ken hasn’t been on Skype for a month. I miss him.. (Great, conflicted Mary is back again). Did I mention that today is my 3rd year anniversary with the Nicholas? Totally is. What did we do to celebrate? I woke up at 5 in the morning, waited for him to show up at 6, and ate tacos in my apartment parking lot. Then, I went to work, and he went home to sleep. We are going to Bastrop for the weekend which is just 20 minutes from my grandparents. Maybe I should go visit. (Why the hell don’t I call my family? Am I really that fucking self absorbed? Family trumps dudes any fucking day..) and I hope the trip is nice. I just texted him like 45 min ago of us drifting apart. Because… he will talk about things that seriously, Charlie, I could give two fucks about, then we will talk about ice cream, for example, and he goes off on a tangent about something little do with ice cream. Sometimes, I feel like I guilty stay with him because I do fucking love him, but I could be holding myself back from experiencing new things.

I want to write more. Bare with me for a moment, Charlie. Okay, I’m back. (That was a second break, in real time in case y'all were wondering)

My thoughts aren’t flowing as well. I wish I knew a friend who was bi or a lesbian who would like to explore with me. And not have it change things.

So, I have a shit sleep schedule. I’ll come home at 5 ish in the evening. I’ll sit in traffic for twenty min. Come home. Eat something. Fall asleep by 7. Wake up at 10, and stay awak indefinitely. Then wake up at 6, and start over. (What is wrong with me?)

Oh. More breaks from relationship shit. I saw a therapist. Three visits. It was nice. His name is Tim. (Had to stop because I literally have no fucking time to see a dr anymore psychologist or medical, because my schedule is a fucking bitch). He graduated from Harvard! That is awesome. His attire was well groomed, always. I never told him he intimidated me because of that. But he was a nice guy. Time to go to psychologytoday.com to look for weekend available therapists who take my insurance. I hope if I am to become a psychologist, that I’m a tiny better than Tim. He was lovely, I was just unnerved by someone focusing such time on me. But, that is kind of what he is paid for? So….

Oh. Have I mentioned at all to you, Charlie about how I want to start a YouTube channel? I want to read stories I find on the internet. Annnd, I’m pretty excited. I get my mic maybe with next weeks paycheck.

I feel like there is more to add. For anyone you may have lost touch with over the years, Charlie, does the thought of that person and the memories you shared together ever make you cry? I found a CD an old friend left to me for my birthday. And it broke my heart that we aren’t close anymore. I feel like I .. let my true relationships go in my worst state of mind.. And, I miss her so much. It really really hurts. I’m crying just thinking about it.

Also, I’m not sure if I mentioned, there are rare cases where I will laugh so hard at something I found to be funny, that I make others worried or uncomfortable. But the laughter turns to sobbing (sobbing such as my mom dying, or my brother getting hit by a car, or someone killing me) just as severe. I tried asking like crazy, and no one seems to know. That is, until a month ago, a friend from the meetings I go to (please tell me I’m not so vapid that I forgot to tell you I go to Monday meetings with DBSA for my depression) showed me what I have.. which I forgot the name of. But it is a treatable condition. Something to do with sensitivity.

I can’t hear well out of my right ear. I need to see a doctor.

summary: Lily makes the reader realizes something right before her birthday 

A\N: sorry that this is really late m=but university was killing me and I’m finally on vacation also  I changed the name from half a life to lavender and black so I hope you don’t mind and again I hope you enjoy my bad writing :)

Sirius Black x Reader: because if I’m going to write about anyone it’s definitely Sirius :’)

 The highlight of your third year at Hogwarts didn't happen when Hogwarts was open for classes again, it was actually in the summer of your second year. You always heard of your aunt but never got to know her since she died when you turned two, but the universe had a plan for you to discover a piece of her mind. You found her potion making journal where she recorded every single potion she made. You thought that her intention was to publish it, except you discarded that idea completely when you saw the instructions to a potion that you knew too well, your potion. Nobody knew about its existence, and the few that knew about it didn't know how to make it. So you went to Hogwarts with the book as another secret.

or so you thought.

The journal was discovered by your friends two weeks after your third year started. You realized then that keeping a secret from them wasn't an option anymore. Now anyone else in your place would've planned their funeral by now, but if there's anyone you trusted more than your parents it would be your friends. Some people might call you crazy because what's at risk is your life, but you can learn a lot about people in two years, and in two years you realized that your friends won't let you get scratched, let alone seriously injured. As for the journal itself, it was for sure going to be used to get better grades in potion class, you just didn't expect what happened a week later in the middle of the night.

The Marauders found out some information regarding potion class, and of course, you were the first one that they had to tell, and the fact that is was probably past 12 am wasn't going to stop them.

their plan was to take you to their room, but they were stopped by none other than Severus Snape the minute they stepped into the Slytherin common room.  

" we just want to talk to y\n," explained Remus. He was the most calm out the marauders, but it was still obvious that he was not fond of Snape.

" If I were you I'd be more concerned about the trouble I'll get into for not being asleep than talking to y\n, " said Snape.

" yeah because you're tucked in bed right now," James replied to him. " hate to be the one with bad news but you're awake too"

" y\n is probably asleep " Snape informed them, his reply to James made it clear that the marauders will definitely not get in trouble anytime soon.

" yeah right, the only time y\n sleeps before 5 am is when you finally wash your hair, " said Sirius " she's pacing or reading a book right now "

before Snape had the chance to defend himself, you appeared with a book in your hand, and Sirius immediately gave Snape an I told you so fake smile.

" Hey, what are you doing here? " you asked your friends and they told everything. You were curious about what had to tell you, so you sneaked into their room, thankfully, you still had your aunt's journal with you because they told you that professor Slughorn was going to display 3 potions, and whoever identifies them gets to have liquid luck, which James wanted. They needed your help to learn how to recognize potions, after all, you were the best at them.

All of you gathered together for breakfast at the great haul the next morning. Out of all the topics you talked about your, birthday after a week was your favorite until Lily mentioned that Sirius will probably give the best gift since you’re basically dating. You didn’t know what it was, but something clicked in your head at that moment, but you continued with the conversation with the idea still in tieback of your head without realizing it.

The next morning at potion class professor Slughorn does exactly as what your friends told you he'd do. Lily was next to you that day, and so with three potions in front of you, you start guessing.

"This is definitely liquid luck," Lilly said pointing at the potion that looks like melted gold, and you agreed.

" Oh, I would recognize this anywhere  ، this is Pepperup Potion for sure," you told Lily, and now you had one potion left. This one you couldn't identify by color and you didn't recognize it immediately, so you decided to smell it.

" It's Amortentia" you blurted out.

“ really what did it smell like? “ Lily asked, but she knew she won’t get an answer after you asked her to repeat what she said again because you didn’t hear her. Even though she definitely knew who it smelled like because you had the exact same look on your face this morning at breakfast, She decided to let you process all the realization because while everyone considered you and Sirius a couple, it was very obvious that you didn't, well until today at least.  

Since breakfast, your mind couldn't stop thinking about it.  Even if you liked him, there was no way you were going to tell him especially that you didn't know if he liked you back, and rejection was a thing you were trying to avoid at all costs, but more importantly, you were definitely not going to ruin your friendship, so your decision was to just keep the feeling in there and not talk about it with hope that it goes away, you had no idea if that's even possible, but for your friendship's sake you were willing to try.

Your birthday was finally here weeks later, and you were so excited to spend it with your friends. The day was already started well with a letter and a gift from your parents. You decided to celebrate your birthday with your friends after class in your room. You got your favorite songs on a cd from Lily, a rare edition of your favorite book from Remus, and a sweater from Jame's parents as well as a month of doing my homework from James himself. Everyone was there and gave you gifts except Sirius as he was the only one who still had classes to go to. He appeared right after you opened James's gift with a box in his hand.

" I made it, Finally! " he said out of breath with a box in his hand. You subconsciously smiled and totally forgot the speech you prepared in case he didn't show up at all and didn't have to be a psychic to know that Lily is smirking.

He sat next to you and handed the box you, he was clearly excited, but not as much as you. The box was black with a purple ribbon that you untied and the first thing that you spotted was a small box which you decided to open first, and in it was a necklace with a small glass ball filled with lavender to the half and It'll pass carved on it. Now Sirius thought it was a perfect gift because your anxiety can become really bad sometimes and the only thing that helps you relax is the lavender cream you own which is why every single person says you smell like lavender. The next gift was an invitation to go to all the different places at Hogsmeade signed by my parents.

" How did you get them to sign it? "

" I have my ways, besides they'll be waiting for you there "

You were really missing your parents so knowing that you'll see them and that Sirius was so thoughtful made you cry. You hugged him and whispered a thank you. It was after the hug that he told you there's one more gift left, a huge bottle of wine which you decided to share with all your friends by playing a game, a question is asked by any person in the group,  and everyone drinks after answering the question. The game revealed some interesting information about everyone, like how lily rather die than relive her first date, What's next on Sirius's ways to drive my mother insane list and how Remus actually came up with the idea of marauders last prank.

By the time the question " what's the worst way to die? " was asked by Sirius you were definitely all drunk, and your answers, well let's just say were not what they would be different if the wine wasn't involved. James chose in vane while lily chose too soon and Remus chose in the hands of a beast.

" suddenly" you blurt out. " you're just going with your day normally not expecting anything and then poof, their gone and there's nothing you can do about it"

Everyone was clearly not expecting that kind of answer from you, and you could tell from the silence as well as their faces, but it was true, that's the worst way you could think of, and that after that day it wasn't only the worst way to die to you, but to all your friends as well. After some more celebration, all of your friends went to their room and sleep, still not forgetting that James has a Quidditch game to play tomorrow which is why the Quidditch field is the first place you went to after you all woke up.

James was a really good player, no one could deny that so it wasn't a surprise that he was the one who scored most of the points for Gryffindor, but the moment that got everyone on edge was when James was on his way to score and get that points that will break the tie between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw.

Come on, come on” whispered Lily and James scored moments later followed by the Gryffindor's seeker catching the snitch.

“ Yes, he did it y/n! “

And everyone including you started to cheer while filled with happiness. Maybe it was because you had this look on your face before, or because it was the first time you saw Lily happy and excited like this, but that day staring at Lily, you were sure that Quidditch was not the only thing that James won that night.

What you were oblivious to is that after the game Dumbledore and McGonigal had a very important conversation.

" Do you think we should suggest that she uses a memory charm on her friends? " asked McGonigal. " The news is from a very trustworthy person. If it's true, I'm certain he will go after her if he discovers what she's capable of"

" She made her choice regarding that already Minerva, let us confirm that the news is true first then we'll know what to do"

I’ve taken up writing again, or kinda, idk man. It’s supposed to be horror but it is what it is! Anyways, I wanted to share this with people who’d be less biased so tell me what you think of it! 

I remember when I was younger my grandparents had a little bit of property down south of my hometown. It wasn’t much though, just a small cottage surrounded by forest and a dirt road going just across the front of it and stopping in their driveway. I remember when my brothers and I were young we would run around out there, sometimes supervised, sometimes not. The woods somehow were full of bamboo, patches of it just big enough for a 10-year-old to hide in well enough not to be seen for several hours. The three of us would sit in these patches, carving out little hideaways for ourselves, reading, listening to the cd player one of us had brought, picnicking. That might sound odd but it was truly a good time, an innocent time.

One summer afternoon, as we were sitting in one of these clusters something strange happened, a kid came up to us. She had to have been the age of my youngest brother, 6 or so, wearing an aviator jacket. I remember thinking how strange it was and commenting on it and never getting an answer to my question. The only thing she said was “Do you wanna play?” My brothers and I weren’t as shocked as one might’ve guessed we would be. There weren’t that many people on this road or the paved one it led to, so we weren’t surprised that maybe one of the grandchildren or child of another resident had taken to wandering the roads or woods as we had. So when she had asked us to play with her we didn’t even respond, we just stood up and played with her for hours until we were called in for dinner as the sun set. We all waved by to the little girl in the bamboo and ran back to the house, laughing as we went.

My grandmother is a short woman with black hair while my grandfather could be described as Santa, all he’s missing is the long white beard. They’re very kind people, always have been. Very Christian as well, praying before every meal, going to bed and waking up. We prayed with them of course, being children and all. I remember asking my grandmother asking about the little girl and suddenly we were all being whisked off the property by my parents within the hour. For the second time that day I had not gotten a response to any questions I had asked, an oddity for my curious 12-year-old self, I was entering middle school and considered myself an adult and above not getting the answers I wanted.

When I got home I asked my parents what was wrong with my grandparents and why they hadn’t answered my question. I knew something bad had happened out there from their reactions but no one had told me exactly what had happened. My exasperated parents sat me down and told me that near the beginning of World War II a German family had moved in on that dirt lane, long before grandparents had owned the land, and the husband went off to fight for America. He came back before it ended due to injuries, a changed man. The family lived there for years, having many children but only one daughter. The pilot treasured his daughter more than his own life. He put everything he had into her wellbeing. Then one winter night, she had been sent out to try and draw water from the well out back. She pulled her fathers oversized coat on and went out. Then the pilot snapped and picked up his service revolver. He shot his wife and four children before shooting himself on the front lawn.

After not seeing any of them in town for a while one of the wife’s friends went with her husband to check on them and they found him laying spread eagle in the weeds. Using the phone inside the husband dialed the police and the wife went to check on her friend and the children. Some animals had gotten into the house somehow and had eaten the corpses of all the residents inside. Once the police came the family friends left. The police counted four bodies inside the house and one outside it. The body of the daughter was nowhere to be seen. After searching the woods, they found her in the well, her body having become bloated due to the water exposure.

“Now they demolished the house so your grandparents didn’t buy that house.” My mother hurried to assure me. “The family lived closer to the main road and eventually your grandparents bought the property and expanded further into the woods.”

Hearing the story put me off of going out into those woods for a long time. I stayed with my grandparents occasionally but took to reading in the den, where I could be seen and see my brothers on the lawn, and I noticed grandfather took to keeping his rifle case closer to his recliner.

The older I got the less I went out there. Eventually just stopping altogether. That is, until I heard they were going on vacation during the upcoming summer and needed someone to house sit for them, tidy up and make sure their plants survived. Now at age 20 I had just finished my second year of college and was looking not to be bothered by family, the cottage out in the woods became a blessing to me. A place I could live on my own at, food, drink, and wifi all paid for.

I spent the week before my grandparents left helping them prepare and pack, they were going to Big Bend, California, Illinois, then back home. The journey would take them the better half of the summer just to get around the country and I was so excited to be truly on my own.

The first month consisted of my going to work, and binging cop shows and other things that I could find online, staying inside as much as I could, eventually I grew bored of that and decided to pull my boots out and go for a hike. I had a good chunk of land at my disposal although I was still put off by the story of the little girl I figured it was just a story and nothing more.

Grabbing a book, a soda, and a sandwich I tossed them into a satchel and set out. After a coupe hours or so I found myself a nice little patch of bamboo with a flat little circle in the center and decided to take my lunch. I lost myself in the book until I heard a small voice call out to me. “Do you wanna play?” Looking up I didn’t see anyone and decided maybe I should play some music and put my earbuds in, and headed deeper into the woods.

The woods grew thicker the deeper I went, trees becoming closer and closer together, sometimes so close they started to look like people out of the corner of my eyes. I decided it was probably time to head back home and turned to make my way back to the cottage. And I know it was my brain playing tricks on my but I swear that I saw a little girl in the distance on my way back.

As time went on I eventually braved going deeper into the woods, staying out there until I could just hear the night creatures start stirring around me. I soon found the well my parents had spoken of in the story but it was much less than I had ever thought. In my young age I was picturing a large stone circle with a wooden frame and a bucket with rope. What I found was a small wooden thing that came up to my waist that was boarded shut once upon a time but had buckled under some unknown pressure.

That’s when I heard the gunshots. Five shots were fired in total. Three in quick succession, one that followed it about a minute after and then one last shot. Then silence. No animals made any noise, no bugs crawled. I discovered that after that last shot was fired I held my breath until I absolutely couldn’t any more. I couldn’t pinpoint the direction the shots had come from so I couldn’t go the other way. I just sat on the edge of the well waiting for something else to happen.

I sat there all night, playing games on my phone until it died and after it did I went back to the cottage. It sat undisturbed. I circled around it and found no holes in the sides or doors and went in, holding my puny little pocket knife like I had seen action heroes do. Nothing was wrong in the house. On the front lawn was a pistol. This was when I suddenly realized I had to call the cops. Shots had been fired and they had probably come from this gun. The police came, took my statement and the gun, telling me it might’ve been a hunter or any of the neighbors practicing, because noise does travel.

I didn’t sleep at all that night and when I did finally fall asleep the next day I could only dream of that little girl, her body tossed into the well by the man that loved her more than anything. I found my grandfather’s rifle and set it up next to the chair like he had so many years before. I wasn’t going to let ghosts get the better of me.

A week after I found the pistol I got a phone call from my grandparents asking if everything was alright. I said that everything was absolutely fine and I had just gotten a little worked up over nothing was all. After reassuring them for half an hour I decided that it was time for me to finally face this little girl or whatever was actually going on.

Setting out to city hall or wherever the city kept their records, I had to know if this family had really lived there or even existed. After spending three days searching I found that the ‘Werden’ family had indeed lived on the property and murders had occurred on the property but had not been committed by the father. They had been committed by a stranger that had heard of German people living on American soil and decided they were Nazis.

Jacob Sorrenson killed the Werden family in cold blood, executing them all on the front lawn, youngest to oldest. He was only caught because he bragged about it in the bar hours later. They could never find the body of the little girl though. Sorrenson claimed he killed all of them but would never reveal the location of the little girl’s body. Feeling sickened I went to my parents’ house and slept on their couch for the night.

Going back out there the next day with fresh eves I decided to search for the possible grave of the Werden girl. I didn’t know what I’d do if I did find it, I just knew I had to. I spent the rest of the summer looking for anything that could resemble a nearly 60-year-old grave, researched what could possibly indicate a body is buried somewhere but found nothing out in those woods or near the well.

Eventually my grandparents returned from their trip and asked me if I was okay and I confirmed that I was indeed fine, I had just been a little spooked. After all, how do you tell someone they built a house on the grave of a little girl?

Dmitri has taught himself many things, like how to cook easy dishes and figure out which breaker went off in the house. He’s visited several places in the city on his own, all in the name of making experiences for himself. He makes the best out of the independence he never asked for.

Dmitri, being of the curious kind, likes to educate himself. In his opinion, there is no such thing as knowing too much or learning about too many things. Even at such a young age, he recognizes the benefits in knowing everything from how to change a tire to what the smallest country in Europe is. Knowledge is power and he desperately wants to keep getting stronger.

Perhaps because of his quest to know it all, Dmitri has difficulty focusing on one subject for an extended time. His school records have him labeled as ADHD, with directions for all his teachers to ensure he has reminders to stay on task. Dmitri needs stimulation constantly, even when he’s absorbed in reading or watching something. Otherwise, his thoughts are all over the place and he amounts to less than he hoped for. 

If the massive headphones didn’t give it away, Dmitri is heavily invested in music. It is one of the methods he uses to keep himself in the zone and avoid distractions. Dmitri doesn’t like what is currently on the charts, but instead listens to mostly 80′s music, especially 80′s rock. He fell in love with the genre after going through his dad’s collection of CDs. 

Diagnosed at 10, Dmitri has Type 1 diabetes and always wears a insulin pump that monitors his sugar levels. He’s attempted to make checking it himself and getting refills a routine, but he sometimes forgets about it entirely. Luckily, the nurse keeps replacement pumps and sugary snacks for him in her office, just in case.

Overall, you may not think small device switches are worth saving. Maybe you won’t focus on larger sized devices, while the smaller ones may still be useful for smaller boards that need special control for one reason or another.

Remember that safety is an important part of any power generating system. You should always be able to quickly, efficiently, and safely shut down any module in the system without harming yourself, the equipment, or anything attached to it. Switches are necessary for that purpose.

Fuses

As with switches, there is no way to substitute for well placed fuses on your circuit boards and within the power generating systems. Whether you make a mistake or a short occurs, fuses can truly save your life and also prevent your equipment from being ruined.

Do not try to cut corners and bypass fuses or leave them out of your designs.

The Board Itself

Even though each board may have a specific purpose, you can still use the pathways to take the place of wires. Just make sure that you know how to cut into the board to block off pathways that you have no intention of using.

If you do not have wires, but do have several small parts, this may be the most viable way to connect them together.

Computer Hard Drives

Many modern computers have “solid state” drives, but you can still get old junk computer parts that include hard drives featuring motors and solid metal disks inside. Aside from being fun to take apart, they are also a treasure trove for anyone looking for parts to generate electricity with.

Here are three parts you should aim to save:

The circuit board – there are many components that you will find useful. I wouldn’t personally recommend wasting time with the IC chips, but you could set them aside for other uses.

The motor – old hard drive motors are designed to spin heavy metal disks for hours on end at very high speeds. If you can get a good running motor, you could find a way to reverse it so that it will put electricity out instead of use it.

The metal plates – heavier plates are perfect for Tesla Turbines that will spin at higher speeds. They can also be stacked together and will not break apart as quickly as plastic CD versions.

Bicycles and Other Pedal Devices

Overall, you will find that bicycles are some of the most common devices used to generate electricity. All you need to do is make them stationary, and then attach a motor that is capable of producing electricity.

You can also use mini exercise bikes or anything else with pedals that work in the same way as bicycle pedals.

Aside from using a motor, do not forget that you can also use pedals to turn CD based turbine blades or just about anything else you can attach a magnet to.

Appliance Motors

Computer hard drives are just one kind of household appliance that offers motors that may be of use to you. Blenders, food processors, can openers, and many other devices can be used to generate electricity as long as you have something to spin them with.

As with computer hard drive motors, you’ll also need to build rectifiers so that you can take the output and turn it into what you need to power other items.  If the device in question also has a power board connected to the motor, you could use it as part of the power conversion system.

When using appliance motors to generate electricity, remember how fast they normally spin, as well as the amount of load they can take. Some motors can rotate thousands of times per minute, others cannot.

If you exceed this speed or try to put too much weight on the motor, you may burn it out or wear it out faster than expected. Even though you may have a large supply of motors on-hand, learn how to preserve them and avoid ruining them so that you can make them last as long as possible in a time of need.

Fans

Whether you are looking at small battery powered fans or box sized fans, the motors and blades can be very useful for generating electricity. These motors are durable and designed to run for hours on end without overheating or needing maintenance.

If you are looking for systems that will generate larger amounts of electricity at one time, then box fan motors will work much better than hard drives or small appliance motors.

In addition, if you want a fast, easy way to get started with testing coils, a battery operated personal desk fan may be a good place. Just add some magnets to the blades, and then build your coils. Even though you will still need to power the fan with electricity, you can still use the blades to induce current in a coil.

Household Trash

Unlike other power generation methods, you will need to convert the trash into something else before you can use it to generate electricity.  There are four basic methods that you can use:

The simplest, and least efficient method is to burn the trash to produce heat. This includes turning paper into brick logs that will burn longer, and hopefully produce more heat.  You can use the heat to produce steam, which in turn can be used to spin a conventional turbine. Heat can also be used to spin a rubber band engine, which in turn, can be used for spinning magnets.

Depending on the type of trash, you can use it to make natural gas or methane, which can be used as fuel to power a generator. In this case, you would be using kitchen waste and other forms of organic scraps. While this method may be more efficient, do not forget you will also need to be able to store the gas.

If you don’t want to burn organic trash, you can use it to make compost. This will produce lower temperatures, but still enough to generate electricity. In this case, you would be using the heat from the compost pile to power a thermoelectric generator. All you need is a material that generates electricity based on the difference in temperature on one side of the material versus the other.  If you are curious about these materials, you may want to look at coffee pots such as the Power Pot and other camping equipment that use thermoelectric materials to generate electricity when they are heated up.

Although a stirling engine is technically a thermoelectric engine, it does not always rely on using special materials to drive the engine. Instead, you can use compressed air generated by heat to run the engine.

Scrap Metal

Small amounts of metal and whole hunks of metal from engines can be used to generate electricity. Get two different kinds of metal and bury them with attached wires.  You can make small 12 volt cells in ice cube trays, or larger ones in your backyard.

Scrap metal can also be fashioned into many other things. In fact, if you are successful in building small prototypes of different kinds of wind turbine blades, you’ll need to turn to metal fabrication to make larger designs that will be durable enough to withstand higher speeds.

Here are some other ways you can use scrap metal:

Seeing the voltmeter budge for the first time can be an amazing experience. You may not pay much attention to whether or not your device will withstand the rain, cold, or other environmental factors. Metal is ideal for building cases and support structures for anything that will build up heat or need to be protected from the elements. You must also build your frameworks so that they can shield your devices as much as possible from EMPs.

Depending on your budget and interest in different kinds of equipment, melt scrap metal down and turn it into something else – everything from motor shafts to wire extrusions. Having the ability to forge and shape metal, will greatly expand your options for building power generation devices.

Wires

Wires are every bit as indispensable for generating electricity as magnets. You will need wire to make coils, as well as for connecting smaller power generation modules together.

Here are some places where you can find good quality wire:

Automobile Chassis

Whether you look in the junkyard or at rusty cars in an abandoned lot – chances are the wire harnesses are still intact. These are usually good quality, heavy wire that can be used for many purposes.

Motor Parts

Even if you can’t use the motors or other parts of old appliances, it never hurts to snip the power cords and save them. Later on, you can always remove the rubber coating and use the internal wire for various purposes.

Inside Abandoned Buildings

If you are able to get access to the walls or under the floorboards, there is a good chance you will find electric cables.  If they are coated in metal, you can always melt that metal down for something else.  The wire inside might be best used for constructing earth batteries, or other areas where heavy wire will be of value.

When it comes to repurposing gadgets to make electricity, you will only be limited by your imagination and determination.

Remember the fundamentals of making something spin, and then turning that spinning motion into a way to make a magnet move in relation to a coil. Once you are able to induce current in a coil, there is truly no stopping you from progressing to a point where you can power an entire household and beyond without the need for expensive solar panels or relying on pre-made fuels.

While this process requires time and effort, in the end, you’ll find it worth! Or you may find yourself looking for another reliable energy sources, in case of a blackout!

FALLEN HEROES: #1: JACOB’S MOUSE

Jacob’s Mouse were a three-piece rock band from Bury St Edmunds.  Between 1990 and 1995, they released three albums, one compilation and a string of EPs, earning high-profile fans in John Peel and Kurt Cobain.  For the first in our new series celebrating Fallen Heroes of the local scene, B-Side's Seymour Quigley takes a guided tour of the band’s discography.

Back in the 60s and 70s, Bury St Edmunds town centre was, by many accounts, a little bit rough.  Bury had its own musical dive bar, the now partially-demolished Griffin, (which stood half-proudly on the narrow strip of land between Cornhill and St Andrews Street South now occupied by Officers Club and Karooze), where local bands could “cut their teeth” and where on weekend nights and market days, mods and rockers, juiced to the nines on booze and cheap speed, would spill freely out into the marketplace, merrily beating seven shades of intoxicated shite out of each other, the Police and anyone else who happened to be standing around.

When the first wave of punk arrived in 1976-77, with bands like the Sex Pistols and The Clash pushing an agenda of Total Freedom to Express Yourself, it unwittingly helped encourage its weaker-minded disciples to take acting like a total prick in public to its logical conclusion and made punk a cause célèbre for the frothing right wing.  So when The Clash visited the Corn Exchange during the Out On Parole tour of 1978 (in the face of strong opposition from the Council), popular legend has it that Bury’s punks, teds, mods and rockers were out in force and that the ensuing carnage saw blood on the streets, property destroyed, general indecency and the overall erosion of society.  Whether this was the case or not – by several written accounts, there was no trouble whatsoever, The Clash signed a few autographs and everyone went home happy – so began the start of a Council-imposed 19 year ban on gigs in any public buildings within the town (Conservative towns have a long memory – until 1997, when Councillor Jackie Smith finally broke the embargo with a tentative inaugural BurySound gig, well-meaning promoter after well-meaning promoter found themselves turned away with the mantra, “When The Clash played here in 1978…” ringing in their ears).

So the big names stopped coming to town, the scene dried up, the rougher pubs were shut down, and – as is time-honoured fashion in places where creativity is stifled – Bury became a pub rock bore.  Throughout the 80s, a small resistance movement of Goths, grebos and metallers kept the flame of DIY alive with local bands like The Never Never and Cutting Edge trying, but never quite managing, to lift the local scene out of the doldrums of endless cover band hell.

Then, at the dawn of the 90s, something miraculous happened.  A group of KEGS students (that’s King Edward VI Upper School to you non-Bury types) – twins Hugo Boothby and Jebb Boothby on guitar and bass respectively, and singing drummer Sam Marsh – inspired by the rumblings of US alt-rock and proto-grunge (Fugazi, Minor Threat, Big Black, Pixies, Hüsker Dü) and the nightly clatter of Radio One’s John Peel show, released a 5-track, 12”-only EP through Liverish Records, an imprint set up especially for the release by much-missed second-hand record shop and local institution, The Record Pedlar. The Dot EP – with its iconic “big black dot” sleeve – didn’t set the World alight, but its mixture of new wave-meets-exploding guitar-meets-shitkicker drums-meets-screaming rage plus violins pricked up the ears of indie (which, in the early 90s, was still short for “independent”) types all over the country.  Jacob’s Mouse had, in their own small way, arrived.

The Dot EP was followed in 1991 by the band’s first CD release, 8-track mini-album No Fish Shop Parking.  Released on the band’s own Blithering Idiot label, and named in tribute to a chalk-drawn sign outside the Elephant & Castle pub, No Fish Shop Parkingstill sounds, even by today’s standards, absolutely furious.  Recorded, like all their output, in a shed in Norfolk, No Fish Shop Parking perfectly encapsulates what it feels like to grow up, burdened by intelligence, in a town like Bury St Edmunds, with all the rage and frustration and inertia perfectly summed up in every seething groove of every twisted song.  From opener Tumbleswan, which sees mournful violins collide with triumphant guitars while incomprehensible lyrics spill higgledy-piggledy over themselves, through She Is Dead (only lyrics: “She is dead… now!”), to the syncopated, nonsensical dub-jerk-guitar-aargh of Carfish, to the actually-quite-frightening Justice and, best of all, on the truly phenomenal Twist (written and recorded months before Nirvana unleashed Smells Like Teen Spirit), No Fish Shop Parkingperfectly demonstrates what can be achieved when newly-tapped talent meets genuine, simmering anger, and when Sam screams, “I’M SO CONFUUUSED!” in the dying moments of final, blistering track The Vase, you know exactly what he means.

No Fish Shop Parking earned the band a mountain of hype, a string of high-profile supports with pretty much every big indie band of the day (from the Manics and Suede, to Swervedriver and Th’ Faith Healers, to Babes In Toyland and Nirvana, whose singer – I forget his name – went on record as stating that Jacob’s Mouse were one of his favourite bands), Peel Sessions aplenty and, best of all, a record deal with influential, London-based Wiiija Records (home to Therapy?, Cornershop and, later, BiS).

The band’s first release for Wiiija, 4-track EP Ton Up, was a curious affair, with the band seemingly determined to take relatively straightforward pop songs – Motorspareis pure frantic Hüsker Dü punk, This Room carries a reggae shuffle underneath semi-spoken vocals, Oblong manages to be both obtuse and catchy – but subtly warp the edges, tempering their more rockist tendencies with avant-garde flourishes (most effectively on closer Fridge, which follows a full minute of white noise with a gigantic drum fill and none-more-Sabbath guitars).  A minor triumph.

And then came I’m Scared.  Their first “proper” album in that it contains 11 songs, I’m Scared marks the moment where Jacob’s Mouse began to decisively sever their ties with the outside World, and began doing exactly as they pleased.  So whilst Kettleopens proceedings with a barrage of metallic angst, and album highlight It’s A Thin Sound applies dub grooves to shoegaze guitars, elsewhere things get really weird, really fast: Deep Canvas Lake is ushered along by urgent mandolins; Box Hole contemplates the nature of mortality via ear-piercing treble-shredding guitar; and Coalmine Dig  eschews conventional percussion for what sounds like an army of schoolchildren employed to dispatch the contents of the music cupboard with hammers.  Take that, woodblock!

If the music press – who generally gave I’m Scared ­baffled but appreciative reviews – weren’t quite sure what to make of Jacob’s Mouse by this point, the band’s next run of singles did nothing to help press relations.  From the point of view of sheer creativity, 1993-94 was a good era for the ‘Mouse, and three EPs (the band having long since decided that nothing appearing on a single should also appear on an album) followed in swift succession:  the deceptively poppy, 60s tinged, bass-led and thoroughly splendid Good, followed by the unsettling, down-beat, reverse-guitar semi-folk of Group Of 7, followed in turn by the splendidly-titled and genuinely odd Fandango Widewheels, the verses of which feature the band’s (clearly amused) neighbour reading random nonsense over angry grunge, before an unexpectedly anthemic chorus sees Sam screaming, “Ban the human being! / Kill the bastard!”  Decidedly not Oasis.

Although the three EPs seemed, in isolation, somewhat disparate, when collected together and re-released by Wiiija as the 10-track Wryly Smilers compilation, their jointly fractious nature gave the songs a context and some kind of sense.  It’s doubtful that there was any kind of masterplan – and, speaking many years later, Sam Marsh has indicated (in an unpublished interview for Mmmmm, Juicy! fanzine) that the band were literally throwing every idea they had down onto tape just to see what happened – but the sheer scope of Jacob’s Mouse’s creativity at this stage was truly astonishing.  So whilst, on one hand, Palace – arguably the band’s finest punk moment – is an almost-unbearably exciting barrage of noise, Sag Bag sees dark subject matter (a first-hand account of a road traffic accident ending with the calm observation, “I can see there’s a bone jutting out of me”) grinding against unusual chord progressions and unexpected recorder outbursts, whilst Keen Apple – an impassioned diatribe against an un-named misogynist – comes across like gypsy psychobilly.

And then it all went really weird.  In 1995, with Britpop in full swing, UK Indie Nation found itself gripped by a new-found, half-baked nationalistic desire for all things British.  Blur and Oasis went head-to-head for the Number One slot as part of a pointless flesh carnival to prove absolutely nothing.  Terrible bands called things like Sleeper and Powder were elevated almost overnight from backroom toilet venues to gigantic arena supports, simply on the strength of their hair.  More than ever, indie labels were snapped up as credible fronts for the majors and along with the salivating A&R men, the stylists swept into town, dictating a “look”, a “sound”, an “attitude”.  And did we mention cocaine?  A blizzard of the stuff.  A mountain of it.  Well, it takes the edge off the smack.

As the music biz types of London and Manchester left their souls in a taxi somewhere between a maelstrom of outrageous fortune and an orgy of self-congratulation, a newly-received wisdom spread through the indie World:  That pre-Britpop, everything had, in fact, been shit.  All those records you thought you’d like at the time were, it turned out, rubbish.  So unless you subscribed wholesale to the notion that only bands pushing an agenda of “Britishness” – Union Jacks, 1966, fish ‘n’ chips, The Beatles, Mary Poppins, cup o’ tea – were any good, and wore the exact clothes sported by Liam, Damon, Louise from Sleeper or one of Menswear, you were, quite frankly, dead in the water.  Overnight, mighty bands who’d helped shape the sound of things to come, from Pop Will Eat Itself (who, in the mid-80s, had dared to combine metal riffs with clumsy hip-hop and creative sampling, in the process inventing The Prodigy) to Carter USM (Glastonbury-headlining indie giants whose mixture of clever-clever lyrics, Kylie arrangements and rockabilly guitars influenced misfits like Art Brut, The Indelicates and the Arctic Monkeys) were all but written out of the equation in a Stalinist putsch/proto-New Labourite misconception that the only way to learn from history is to pretend it never happened.  There was, literally, no place in the World for a band like Jacob’s Mouse, and Jacob’s Mouse reacted by retreating from the World entirely.  And so it was in these jingoistic times that Rubber Room, the band’s 2nd (or 4th, depending how you look at it) and final album, landed to universal bemusement in 1995.

Rubber Room is the sound of a three-piece band falling apart.  It makes no sense whatsoever.  Every beat of every drum, every distorted vocal, every skewered noise, every incongruous bleep and blatter and skronk that roars out of the speakers is the sound of three people gone completely insane.  In terms of pop-gone-wrong extreme mentalness, at its most deranged it makes fellow artistic masterpieces of the era like the Boo Radleys’ Giant Steps and the Manics’ The Holy Bible sound comparatively tame.  It is, needless to say, incredible.  Of the 12 tracks on offer here, only two – unlikely single Hawaiian Vice and reasonably conventional US alt-thunderer Blither – could reasonably be described as “commercial” in any recognisable sense, but still see their vocals fuzzed up and mixed down so low as to be near-indecipherable.  The rest of the album takes in looped keyboard jazz terror (Poltergeist), psychedelic dub grunge (Public Oven), unsettling acoustic/electric guitar trade-offs (Domestic) and, in general, jarring barrages of noise and confusion.  But the absolute and inarguable album highlight, suicide note and distillation of all that made Jacob’s Mouse such an intensely wonderful band is Foam Face.  Essentially the sound of three people playing three different songs at the same time, Foam Face is, simultaneously, a trance bass groove, a metal guitar workout, a softly-intoned paean to God knows what, and a full-on noise whiteout, culminating in the sound of a lawnmower committing suicide.  To this day, no other band on a reasonably large indie label has released anything quite this unique.

By Sam Marsh’s estimation, Rubber Room sold less than a thousand copies; the band called it a day shortly afterwards, and as the 90s rumbled towards their tiresome conclusion (The Verve without Nick McCabe, Stereophonics everywhere, Turin Brakes, the much-vaunted “death” of guitar music as Fatboy Slim conquered the globe), Jacob’s Mouse were all but forgotten.  In recent years, whilst one-time peers (and fellow early 90s Peel favourites) Th’ Faith Healers have reformed and found themselves embraced by the ATP set as returning heroes, Jacob’s Mouse have been seemingly happy to let rabid dogs lie.  So while Sam has continued to write, record and release music (firstly solo as The Machismos, later with hardcore legends The Volunteers and short-lived dub types The People’s Choice and Zen Reggae Masters), Jacob’s Mouse have remained, for the most part, a footnote in John Peel’s autobiography.

But their influence is out there.  The first hints could be seen, 10 years back, in the NME’s tenuous “No Name” scene, with the 80s/90s alt-rock influenced likes of Ikara Colt and, in particular, the mighty Mclusky sporting a distinctly Mouse-esque line in seething bass-propulsion, abrasive guitars and off-kilter lyrics.  And on a purely empirical basis, your correspondent has been bowled over in the past few years by the number of music-loving types from all over the UK who, at the mention of Foam Face or No Fish Shop Parking in any kind of “favourite songs/albums” discussion, have responded with some variation on, “Oh my GOD!  Jacob’s MOUSE!  They were fucking INCREDIBLE!!!”  The love is out there, and the love is strong.

Jacob’s Mouse mattered.  From a musical point of view, they were a phenomenal band who released a string of incredible, genre-defying, increasingly deranged but always brilliant records, without ever sounding like they were trying too hard.  But from a personal point of view, they were important because they demonstrated, single-handedly, that a band from Bury St Edmunds could achieve some degree of success, and make records than truly, genuinely, speak to you about how it feels to be in a certain place at a certain time in your life, with all the uncertainties of what the future might hold.  Jacob’s Mouse may never receive the recognition they deserve; but they made the records they wanted to make and, for those who took the time to notice, they made a difference.
