The Wisdom Saga: My Thoughts
Hey all!!!! Here are my thoughts on the Wisdom Saga from EPIC: The Musical!
Overall it isn’t my favorite (Circe/Thunder my beloveds), but it’s still pretty good imho!
Legendary
Love how upbeat this one is. MICO as Telemachus is VERY good, and I especially liked the little trembles/voice cracks (?) as he sang! Gave Tem a “young” vibe.
also loved that “L-L-L-L-Legendary” lol
ITS THE ANIMATIC FROM THE REFERENCE VIDEO :D
The Suitors’ voices 👌 also ANTINUOUS JUMPSCARE. HOW DARE YOU CALL PENELOPE A TRAMP WHEN YOU’RE THE ONE TRYING TO GET INTO HER BED.
Antinuous’s lines are the perfect ick. The ToA Discord and I were all typing out various amounts of EW, ICKY, GET OUT at his parts.
Fight Little Wolf
This is possibly my favorite from this saga! I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while, and I was really excited for it! Athena coming in was brilliant and I love it :3
We’ll Be Fine
ATHENA CALLED ODYSSEUS FRIEND. OWIE.
Anybody else pick up on a similar melody to Open Arms? Because ow.
Love In Paradise
LOVED the flashbacks at the beginning!
The unhingedness Gigi gave Calypso LMAO Zero social interaction does that to you lol
“Last I checked goddesses can’t die!” Stream gets censored
I PANICKED AT THAT LMAO
all I hear are screams…the ptsd is real
“Stay in my open arms” and then IMMEDIATELY triggering an Open Arms reprise. HOW DARE YOU JAY.
NOT ONLY THAT. BUT ALSO EURYLOCUS REPRISING LUCK RUNS OUT AND ANTICLEA’S WAITING. OUCH.
God Games
This is in battle with Little Wolf for favorite Wisdom Saga song lol
THE INTRODUCTION TO THE GODS SLAPPED. WOLFY YOU WONDERFUL WOLF THAT WAS AWESOME.
APOLLO GIVING A LIL BOW AND CASUALLY WAVING TO (us) HIS ADORING FANS (also us)
don’t mind me fangirling he’s my favorite and he was GORGEOUS
Hephaestus being voiced by Jorge’s dad!!!!
I really liked how Luke Holt delivered Ares’s name. Very gritty and perfect I love <3
APOLLO’S LITTLE SMIRK WHEN HE SAYS “GREAT.” I’M DEAD I’VE DIED RIP ALDER
APOLLOOOOOOOOO
his part was sadly short, but honestly? It makes sense why it would be! Apollo really has no beef with Odysseus, and the Sirens are a little out of pocket, like he was assigned to play the game but is throwing Athena an easy thing to counter so he can get back to Orestes and also Athena owes him a solid so EPIC’s explanation for Athena helping Apollo in the Oresteia? 👀 I’m a nerd connecting the dots leave me be
“If that’s true then release him 🙄💅” Apollo has no time for this bullshit he’s like “come on dad why did you pull ME into this?” Lmaoooo
Hephaestus’s part about trust!! I love. Also the lyricism here and in Apollo’s is very very good <3
APHRODITE. Unlike Apollo and Hephaestus, who were rather quick to support Athena, she’s moments away from going “no ♥️💋”
ARES’S ENTRANCE WAS SPETACULAR NO NOTES I LOVE
DISCO HERA!! ANNIFLAMMA THAT WAS SO GOOD AHHHHHHH THE STYLE THE SWAG THE SASS 100/10
THUNDER BRINGER REPRISE AHHHHHH WITH BEAST MODE ZEUS
Also Athena ain’t dead lol she comes back in King isn’t it? Also she’s a GOD. Who CAN’T DIE.
I’ve seen criticism about Zeus attacking Athena, and about how he wouldn’t do that because she’s a favorite…but the thing is, in The Iliad, he does threaten to blast her and Hera off their chariots at one point…plus Apollo’s a favorite too, and he was nearly thrown into Tartarus by Zeus! Being the favorite doesn’t automatically mean you can get away with anything and everything, so I headcanon that Zeus got a bit more peeved than usual because of just how quickly Athena swayed the others (this can connect to the Odyssey then too, because the majority of the gods already agreed that Odysseus had suffered enough and were quite willing to let him go).
I have additional thoughts on God Games, but that’s for another post since it detracts from the actual livestream, but overall I really enjoyed this one! It’s the first livestream I’ve seen in full, though I do think Thunder Saga was more impactful to watch (I watched that livestream too, but came in at the end of No Longer You).
Two sagas to go!! I’ll be updating my tier list sometime soon as well, so stay tuned for that!!

How Far We’ve Come
Hey, everypony! I just had the pleasure of, after looking into it for two years, attending the final Bronycon! I definitely have....many thoughts, so this post might be a bit longer.
First off, I’ve fallen a touch out of line with the series, and apart from basic characters and cutie mark designs, I was starting to wonder if it was worth keeping up with the show anymore. I still remember some of the best times I’ve had watching the earlier seasons with my friends back in California; that definitely makes me sound like a Facebook mom, but, it’s true, we had an awesome run. Once the Season Five finale rolled around, however, and I moved, and suddenly all those times swapping fan animation links before class and designing cutie marks and eating cake ended....I started to move on a bit. I watched other cartoons, checked the FIMfiction page once in a while, and started saving for BronyCon more or less just as a promise I made to little Scout.
However! Walking into the convention hall for the first time, finally getting the passes, and seeing everyone with pony ears and tails....that was the most excited I’ve been in such a long time. (Everyone was happy...cheer was filling up the place....and I saw that every brony had, a smile upon their faaaace....) Every single one of those episodes I watched before anyone else was up to every character I designed when I finished everything early, that all hit at once, and, Celestia’s hooves, shout-out for my poor non-brony best friend in Tennessee who had to listen to me update every photo and comment and cosplay and panel as they came.
I had some of the best conversations I’ve ever had with the people I met in line; take my word for it, everyone at that convention was super sweet and cute, and really added some interesting ideas that I hadn’t thought about before.
If you didn’t see me smiling...you got the wrong Scout. There was always so much going on that I adored, and even in the hallways, brony groups would burst into song or...I made paper stars with one guy who just set up a table for fun, everyone was so friendly. I actually found JediShy completely by accident in line for Pastel Pastures (where they had the DIY mini plushies, but you had to kick flank to be in line by time)--even though I’m not on the MLP Forum (that will change as soon as I post this) yet, he gave me an awesome bracelet for finding him that I have not taken off since then!
Ah, and as for collectibles and swag...so much swag.....
At certain panels, they held raffles, competitions, and giveaways, and for the most part, I was there to watch; but, it’s worth mentioning now that I am somewhat of a collector of any and everything, in the sense more akin to a squirrel than a professional antiquarian. (Layton fans, start a name for this.) I have small collections of buttons, erasers, stickers, fast food toys, figurines, trading cards, business cards, baseballs, golf balls, rubber ducks, Hot Wheels, and chapsticks...anything that strikes my fancy at the time, and no, you may not have one. I’ve been collecting things that make me happy for as long as I can remember, and for one who considers “business cards” a collectible item, I had a lot of fun picking up the freebies! (*coughs* Although, if anyone’s interested in custom plushies--@peruserofpieces, also known as Peruser’s Plushies, has the most adorable business cards I’ve ever seen!) As for the vendor hall, I left with wayyy too many buttons and I love them all to bits! Definitely a big plus!
All of the panels were pitch-perfect as well--I just wish I had a Time Turner of some sort to see them all, but of the ones I saw....the cosplay asks were funny and perfectly in character, the G1-G3.5 histories were all definitely worth the time, and the animations were breathtaking.
So, in short....Bronycon was super amazing, and, even though I’ve only been this one time....I’m really sad to see it go. I had such an amazing time (84 hours of straight euphoria and a bunch of energy drinks running though my bloodstream at the minute!) and I feel like...the bronies really are a family, of sorts. The community was perfect from the bat, and I might never have felt as infinite as I did at the convention--and I know this is true for many others as well. The series really reached a lot of fans, and Equestria will never die.
So....See You Next Summer, I suppose. I realize there are other conventions (I actually looked into them at Bronycon), but I can’t say whether or not I’ll make another one soon. This one was quite possibly the best farewell we could have given nine years of love and dedication....and of course, I would always love to meet another True True Friend with an interest in the series any time.
Thanks for the memories, Lauren Faust! Cheers to a half-dozen more!

Idk if you’re familiar with the video games AI the Somnium Files, but to me Aiba and Mizuki have aro swag. Aiba is a robot character whose personal story revolves around her platonic love for her detective partner. We’ve met another robot character who is explicitly allo, so Aiba’s lack of expressed interest in that stuff isn’t just because she’s non-human. Her real interest is looking at cool bugs. Mizuki is a human, and expresses interest in having a boyfriend, but Aiba says she scares guys away and basically doesn’t even make an effort. There was a moment when it seemed like they might’ve been setting up another character as a love interest for her, but she responded to him in a more platonic way.
I’ve also been thinking about Kim from ML and the possibility of him being aspec. He does get crushes, but it kinda feels like he’s trying hard to wrap his head around his own feelings. Maybe the lack of screentime or even mention of Ondine is making me feel this way, but I feel like they’re not really dating dating, more like close friends who do romantic stuff sometimes. He might be greyromantic/sexual or something in the middle of the spectrum. Cue him realizing by talking about it with his ace and aro besties.
I'm not familiar with those first ones, but I really like the sound of those headcanons!! It's nice when there's a range of robotic and human characters all with a variety of reactions to romance, because to tell the truth I really love aro robot characters! But when there isn't that variety, it sometimes feels like the whole "aros are robotic and unfeeling" stereotype, which, while I totally do love to joke that I am indeed a robot, it kinda hurts when that's all we get. But yeah, those headcanons sound awesome, thank you for sending them to me!! Looking at bugs is an excellent interest tbh, who needs romance when you have cool bugs
And ASPEC KIM, HELL YES HELL YES! I love that so much!! Kim being greyromantic/sexual is a fantastic headcanon, and him talking about it with his aspec friends (since we know that Max is ace and Alix is aro) would be wonderful. Come to think of it, I think a few years ago I made some aro Kim headcanons or something, lemme see if I can dig them out...
Okay I found them!! I'm just gonna copy and paste them here
As any aro knows, in teenagehood it’s common to overcompensate the whole romance thing – I thought crushes were a thing you could pick and choose, so no wonder I thought I’d had a lot!
So Kim picks his “crush” to be on Chloé. After all, she’s super rich and super pretty, right? Why wouldn’t he crush on her? It would make sense!
When she gets him akumatized, it’s less because of the heartbreak and more because of how she humiliated him about it
“If I can’t have love then no one can!!” Dark Cupid was bringing out his salty aro tendencies without even realizing it
(he’s an expert at shooting arrows. the pun practically writes itself.)
Even afterwards, he’s still convinced he’s in love with Chloé, it’s easier than trying to pick someone new to crush on when he already put so much effort into telling himself he really does love her.
He doesn’t notice Ondine highkey crushing on him (for real) because he just doesn’t even think about romance most of the time, though he acts like he does to other people since he has a reputation to keep up
(he doesn’t notice Max’s crush on him either)
After Syren, he decides that he can stop crushing on Chloé and start crushing on Ondine now – after all, she already likes him, right? Wouldn’t it be so perfect?
He’s gone through life being so dumb and oblivious to things that it takes him forever to realize that no, other people don’t choose their crushes, it’s just a thing that happens
And then it starts occurring to him… wait has he never had a crush on anyone at all then??? does that explain why he never understood why Marinette acts so weird around Adrien??? why he suspects he doesn’t feel the same way about Ondine that she does about him??? why people were so surprised that he didn’t bother moving on from Chloé for so long??? why he scoffed that people were just making up the “butterflies in stomach” stuff etc to sound more grown up, and no one believed him???
When he’s turned back into Dark Cupid in Catalyst/Mayura, something just feels weirdly right about being a heartless heartbreaker, that in a weird twisted way he can be as salty about love as he likes and not have to worry about the consequences for a while
Because why should everyone else get to experience this supposedly magical mushy feeling, and not him?
Back as Kim again afterwards, he wonders if his brief time as Dark Cupid is affecting him or whether he was always this “heartless” (read: aromantic), and whether it’s a bad thing or not – like what if crushes are a smart people thing?? what if he’s not smart enough to have one??
His relationship with Ondine shifts into something comfortably platonic after he confides this in one of their secrets games, to his relief
Max is the one who suggests the words “aromantic” and “asexual”. Kim had been wondering about that second one too – as a hot jock, people seemed to expect him to act a certain way, think a certain way, feel a certain way, and he just… didn’t.
He and Alix end up being aroace buddies. In hindsight, he realizes why he found her loud complaints about romance to be oddly relatable.

Deadly Premonition director, Hidetaka “Swery” Suehiro, officially announced his upcoming “Debt Repayment Life Simulation RPG (with Cats)” The Good Life at his PAX West Panel this afternoon!
youtube
We already got a short teaser trailer a week or so ago after the”cat was let out of the bag” but now with Swery’s official announcement we have a brand new trailer, tons of concept art, the game’s crowdfund details, and thanks to the official press release a more detailed plot outline.
THE STORY
Based in an RPG-style town filled with fun activities and fascinating people, THE GOOD LIFE offers a thrilling, twisting murder mystery. At first glance, Rainy Woods looks like a normal country town in Northern England comprised of stone houses built in the Middle Ages, nestled in abundant nature and surrounded by forest. Looking deeper, however, Rainy Woods is home to a bizarre and deadly mystery. Throughout the day, the townsfolk work hard, look out for one another, love their families, and enjoy nightly drinks at the local pubs. Each character has a unique personality and lifestyle. Events change depending on the time of day, weather, and season. Even though some may argue that they live in a video game world, the townsfolk of Rainy Woods still worry, suffer, love, hate, and have fun as any real person would. Rainy Woods and its small English aesthetic exudes a unique sense of charm, fully realized when, in the dark of night, its villagers transform into cats.
Players star as Naomi, a photographer straddled with debt who moves from New York City to Rainy Woods. As an étrangère, players feel both alienated yet strangely comfortable as they must make friends, solve mysteries, and become emotionally invested in Naomi’s quest to make a life for herself in the happiest and most bizarre town in the world. To pay off her debt, she sends reports and photographs on villagers and their town as she uncovers its deadly secret.
THE GOOD LIFE is a mystery tale in the vain of Raymond Chandler or Conan Doyle. Players make a tragic discovery in the town’s river—the brutally murdered body of a young girl, her heart pierced by an ancient, medieval sword. Having first arrived in Rainy Woods to uncover the secrets of the happiest town in the world and payoff her debt, Naomi is thrusted into a bizarre mystery, setting her journalist heart ablaze as she sets her sights on revealing the truth behind the young girl’s murder.
THE GAME
Genre: Debt Repayment Life Simulation RPG Platforms: PC + TBD Console(s) Release Date: Q3 2019 Target Developer: White Owls
So we got a murder mystery/life sim, with cute cats, a cast of bizarre characters with their own 24 hours schedules, AND events that will change depending on the time of day, weather and season?
[More details, pictures and my thoughts under the cut!]
The Campaign
If you are as hyped as I am you can help make Swery’s new game a reality by contributing to The Good Life’s Fig campaign. The development team is hoping to raise at least $1.5M USD to bring a digital version game to both PC and consoles. Fans can lend support via traditional reward based backing or by investing in Fig game shares of the game. There’s a number or different tiers and rewards available for The Good Life ranging from simply receiving a digital copy of the game when it is released for $29 to actually becoming a character within the game as a reward for donating a whopping $35K! Though if any rich fans out there are considering the $35k tier please note that there’s a chance you might end up being brutally murdered in the game. (Yikes!)
Looking at all the tiers though I must say I’m a bit disappointed by the lack of any sort of physical rewards being offered. I mean a real signed message card from Swery is a lot more tempting than a digital one… But there seems to be some hope that this may change looking at the responses to some of the early “backstage” backers. It seems Swery and the campaign team are looking into the possibility of including some physical rewards in the future and are even asking for suggestions!
Personally I would love to see a physical copy of the game or an art/guide book myself! Heck a stuffed kitty Naomi or even a sheep would be pretty awesome additions too!
[Update!] A physical award tier has been added and for $269+shipping you can get a package with some cool game swag! Now if you picked another tier don’t worry you can update your pledge and pick choose to add a number of DLC and physical items!
The Idea
Even though Swery’s announcement of a new game so soon after returning from retirement and opening his studio, White Owls, was kind of a surprise (or maybe it was just me?) it turns out Swery’s been developing the idea for The Good Life for quite awhile now.
According to the “SWERY’S Voice” video on The Good Life’s fig campaign page that describes the game’s inspiration, vision, and story the idea behind the game was sparked after Deadly Premonition’s producer (I assume Tomio Kanazawa) was suddenly transferred to London, England while Swery continued work on Deadly Premonition in Osaka, Japan. Swery was sad to be left behind but the long distance communication between the two ended up inspiring the idea of being sent to a rural English town and being unable to leave.
youtube
Swery’s initial idea continued to refine and expand in the back of his mind over the years even while developing, the now sadly incomplete, D4 – Dark Dreams Don’t Die.
Back in 2015 Swery took a brief retirement from game development to focus on recovering from reactive hypoglycemia and during this hiatus he finished the first draft of a murder mystery novel set in a British countryside town from the perspective of a cat.
I've been eager to hear more about his mystery book for while but now with the The Good Life's announcement I'm beginning to think Swery's novel may have inspired the whole investigating a murder mystery while as a cat angle of The Good Life game.
Now this connection between the game and novel it is pure speculation on my part at this point but given that both are revolve around a strange premise of cat investigating a murder in a rural England just seems way too coincidental. Plus the novel's working title of " I Am Not a Cat " really makes me believe that the main character may have been a human at some point which is very similar to Naomi's situation in The Good Life as she only temporarily turns into a cat during the night while living Rainy Woods!
By the way the characters listed on the campaign page are kind of amazing…and here I thought the residents of Greenvale were a bit strange. I like how Swery seems to be continuing the tradition of a single black male among a caucasian population (who is also named the “totally normal cat” btw lol) and an insomniac who works with the dead. I wonder if the “person name Kaysen” that has occurred in Swery’s last three games (Spy Fiction, Deadly Premonition, and D4) will also continue in The Good Life? It is also kind of amusing that the “Handsome Nurse” is known just as “Gay Cat” I’m guessing this means Naomi won’t be able to make any love connections with that bloke?
Game Mechanics
In The Good Life the story mission focuses on three core points: paying off a huge debt, uncovering the town’s secret, and solving a murder of Elizabeth, the lone daughter of the village pastor.
Photography
Since Naomi is a professional photographer from New York it is no surprise that taking photos is a major gameplay mechanic featured in the game. The monetary rewards for Naomi’s daily reports will heavily factor around the quality and rarity of the photos players take during the day.
Capturing the perfect photo may prove to be a little difficult at first. You won’t actually know how any of your photos will turn out until they are developed them back at Naomi’s house and ranked as either a “success” or “failure” and only successful photos will be sent over to the client for rewards. As players progress through the game there will be opportunities to upgrade and even purchase special cameras that will help the players take better pictures.
Part- time Jobs
But taking photos and sending daily reports isn’t the only way Naomi can cut down her debt. The game also allows players to take a number of part time jobs around town including bartending at the local pub, delivering milk, shearing sheep and other rural tasks.
Some of these part time jobs will give the players opportunities to make a fortune but they can also be exhausting and some can even be dangerous so you have to choose your side jobs wisely!
Any money earned in these ventures can be put towards paying off the ever looming unpaid debt or spent on fun things for Naomi.
Customization
The Good Life is a RPG after all so it’s no surprise that as players progress through the game Naomi stats will improve and fun customizations for Naomi in both her human and cat forms can also be acquired. Naomi’s range of daily activity will expand based on her stamina and movement speed so the more points you earn or temporarily acquire via clothing will allow for more photo taking and fun activities during the day.
Life Maintenance and Stamina
…and speaking of stamina just like in Deadly Premonition and D4 it is important to keep Naomi well fed and rested during her stay in Rainy Woods. I’m pretty excited to see all the English dishes that will be available for consumption… There were a few dishes listed over on the campaign page including one of my favorites, Fish and Chips, which I have a feeling Naomi will end up eat a lot of during my own play through unless there happens to be a lot of smoked salmon…
But eating and sleeping isn’t the only thing players need to keep an eye on during Naomi’s stay they also must balance Naomi’s income so while she’s paying back her debt she will still have enough money left over to not only take care of her daily needs, but also have enough for the upkeep of her camera, the development of photos, and her daily shipments of reports back to New York.
The most surprising examples of one of her special expenses that’s listed over on the campaign page is the need to buy sanitary goods for Naomi once a month. It’s a normal expense in my own life but it’s something I’ve never seen mentioned let alone forced on a player to even consider while in control of a female protagonist before. It’s pretty amazing that sort of detail was even included!
I also thought that way alcohol consumption in the game is handled is really interesting as well. Giving Naomi alcohol will provide some high rewards in the short term as it will alleviate both her hunger and her thirst in one shot but if she continues to overindulge in drink throughout her stay she will develop a dependency for it. It’s pretty neat to see the real life consequence of addiction in a video game... I hope Rainy Woods also has a good 12-step program!
Special Events
The Good Life also features several seasonal events that offer special rewards. The game’s campaign didn’t go into a lot of details but in Spring there will be cherry blossom dance festival, there’s a Tea Harvest in Summer, while during the Fall Naomi can harvest nuts and catch fat river fish, and in Winter find minerals and maybe earn a present from Santa Claus(?)
Being a Cat
During the night while Naomi is in cat form players have the opportunity to investigate places you may not have access to while in human form and a chance to get closer to different villagers while they are in their cat forms by bringing them various trash…er I mean “kitty themed” presents…Some items you find while as a cat may even fetch a high price during the day and unlock some more special story events.
A few of the possible treasures a player can find are seen above...Hmm, I wonder if those “suspicious seeds” are anything like the ones you can find in Greenvale…
Graphics
As for graphics The Good Life’s campaign page describe them as being both “Nostalgic and Modern” using low polygon models with simple textures but also making use of CG-esque atmospheric lighting, fog, shadows, and glare elements well.
The game does look rather simple but it still has a very distinct and unique look. I’ve always prefered a great story over great graphics so I don’t mind the game’s simple design in the slightest :) I do think the sheep are really adorable in this art style though!
Atmosphere
If all of the features above hasn’t already peaked your interest maybe the Fig campaign description of The Good Life’s atmosphere will do the trick:
“THE GOOD LIFE has intriguing elements inspired by Twin Peaks. It will also feature the old-timey British traditions seen in classic shows such as Downtown Abbey and Poirot. This is a Swery Game, so expect a healthy dosage of horror, mystery, humor and taboo topics that helped make Deadly Premonition such a cult hit. Our humor will reflect some of the elements from Hot Fuzz and other classic British comedies.”
Man it was already a give-in that I would be excited for The Good Life since I’m such a big fan of Deadly Premonition (and Twin Peaks) but I can also expect some Hot Fuzz style humor too?!
Guys, Hot Fuzz is one of my all-time favorite films ever so this comparison has me even more excited to play the game!
Hmm… Rainy Woods is described as the “Happiest Town in the World” with the “happiest people on the planet” which is pretty similar to the situation of Sandford always winning “Village of the Year” in Hot Fuzz…I wonder does Rainy Woods have an equivalent of the Neighborhood Watch Alliance?
Hey Naomi, if the townsfolk start chanting about things being “all for the greater good” I would make run for it!
The Developers
The Good Life will be the joint effort between three developers: Swery’s studio, White Owls, along with G-rounding and Camouflaj. Swery and his team will provide the creative and artistic direction for the game while G-rounding will manage the production and game creation and Camouflaj will provide both production support and supervision.
I really hope The Good Life’s Fig campaign is successful as it looks like a whole lot of fun. I’m eager to see how the game will come together and “enjoy my best life” in 2019

TYSM <3
Oh, no, he’s not that bad. He just gets horny when fighting someone who’s actually strong enough to beat him up (even if said someone is a 12 year old boy) and makes such…interesting…sounds while doing so that you’d have a hard time explaining to your parents that no, you’re not watching anything explicit (at least not in that way), honestly doesn’t care whether you live or die if you aren’t entertaining, might murder you just for the lulz if he’s bored, is best friends with a cold blooded assassin with a lot of issues, would kill a child if the child was powerful enough to put up a fight, has a TYPE when it comes to his murderous creepy crushes (Machi: the cold, focused lady with incredible talent who hates him, Chrollo: the extremely powerful thief with unique abilities who doesn’t particularly care for him as far as I know, (possibly)Illumi: the talented assassin who tolerates him as long as he doesn’t lay a finger on Illumi’s beloved little brother Killua (and if Hisoka ever dares to joke about killing Killua then, well, too bad for him)…yeah, Hisoka really has a type)…
yep, he’s really not THAT bad, people are just too hard on him, don’t you think? Poor guy.
You’re welcome :) I still have the crying Saiko pic tho. I might send it to you someday (lol jk jk I messed up her lips on that pic and I am too ashamed to ever show it to anyone. I might still redraw it and send it though because what else could you expect from the Dwarf in the Flask?)
Ah, that’s true. No nose + No mouth + ‘Squad leader is disappointed' look = Urie’s default face…
Watercolors really are so pretty. I love how you can make them look delicate even when using super bold, bright colors. They’re also perfect for painting angsty stuff.
TYSM, Queen Luna is so nice *hugs*
I guess I’m careful on the internet partly because it really IS dangerous, and partly because I just feel uncomfortable doing anything I know my parents wouldn’t approve of without talking it through with them? Idk, see, I can lie to people I don’t like/don’t know very well and not feel guilty about it as long as I have a good reason to, but when I care about someone I’ll feel terrible about hiding something from them even if it’s honestly not a big deal ^^;;
Luckily though I asked my parents and they don’t have a problem with Steam as long as I’m sure the games I play on there are PG-13 :) so I’ll be trying CP when I have the time! Tysm for the help and the rec <3
OH really? Wow! And yeah, Ascension glitches sometimes for me too…but usually if I try again after a while it works again. The ending is pretty awesome, so I do recommend that you try again sometime ^^
(Ishida is trolling auto-correct as well)
I’m going to college soon and I hope Ishida’s tweet won’t be summing that up too LOL (jk, jk)
I WILL FIND A WAY TO ESCAPE. I WILL CREATE THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS AND DESTROY THIS WORLD AS REVENGE, JUST YOU WAIT
Oh sure, I don’t think I’d have trouble getting along with Riza! I meant Roy taking you to meet Riza and you taking Roy to meet me XD
Imagine Evans and Riza teaming up on the Roy/Luna couple though.
Riza: “Are you going out on a date? Colonel, please button up your shirt.”
Roy: Riza u trying to ruin my swag “but-”
Riza: “No buts, it looks much too sloppy.”
Evans: “Luna, I found your phone. Take it with you, ok? Call me if something happens and don’t stay out too late, you need your sleep-”
Luna: “You do realize I’m older than you?”
Evans: “…”
Luna: “…nothing, of course I’ll take my phone!”
Evans: ^^
Riza: *sigh* Kids these days.
Evans: Yeah…
Scar and Evans are both in denial so they’ll keep going round and round in circles until Queen Luna decides to be her awesome self and fix it all up.
(‘Great, because I’m not! Have fun’ seriously you are QUEEN)
I’m sure the queen is absolutely gorgeous <3
I’m sorta like that too- with most people physical contact is a huge NO I hate it, but with people I’m REALLY close with (my mom, my little sister) I love to cuddle. Idk, I’m weird lol
I ship it too. Ugh why do I ship everything except the canon ships
I’m gonna forget it later if I don’t write it now: I’ve watched Zankyou no Terror and I’m pretty sure you’d like it! It’s about terrorists and has plenty of suffering and ridiculous english. Right down your alley XD
…wow. Just. I have no idea what to say other than ‘this is why I always wear headphones when watching anime’. I mean. Nope, I’ll be quiet. The pic’s still really good, tho!
Yeah, poor guy, I wonder why people give him shit. It’s a mystery.
Aw, I wanted to see it… well, if you’re not comfortable sharing it, then it’s no problem ^^ If you ever do redraw it though…. I actually want to get my feels destroyed for once.
I literally clicked on a random chapter. He has his nose and lips tho. Speaking of Urie, oh god the new chapter. I cry.
One time in elementary school, we did this thing with watercolours that I really loved, even though my art turned out like shit: You draw a tree trunk with brown colours normally, then take pink colours (or whichever you want), dip in a toothbrush or normal brush and try to like… spray the paper? Splatter the paint? I honestly don’t know how to describe it in english XD But it looks pretty cool when done ^^
Well, as long as you don’t give out personal info and go to weird sites that could give viruses, it’s not that bad. You can never be carful enough, tho, so it’s nice that you’re cautious ^^ And it’s nice that you tell your parents. Mine don’t even know I have a tumblr XD I don’t think they care, though. Mostly because they trust me not to do stupid shit on the internet.
Oh, sweet! I’m pretty sure that CP is pg-13, There’s no cussing as far as I remember and no gore either ^^ Just a bucketful of angst. Tell me when you start playing! And which route you choose as your first one :D My recommendation is either Karma or Rod. Well, Fritz and Waltz are locked until you’ve done 2 routes, but Rumpel (the 3rd unlocked character) has quite a few spoilers in his route, so I’d recommend doing him 3rd.
It’s been at least a year since I’ve played Ascension. It still glitches RIP. It seems the game hates me XD
Ishida is the troll king. We need to make him a crown or something.
I’LL JUST FILL THE FLASK UP WITH EVEN MORE CONTENT YOU LIKE!!! I’LL BRIBE YOU WITH A NEVER ENDING SUPPLY OF FANWORKS AND ANGSTY BOOKS!
I think I’d get along with Riza just fine XD We’d sigh over Roy and paperwork together :P What do you think you’d be like if you’d meet Mustang?
Riza always ruins his fun XD I think there was that theatre video in which she’s like ‘don’t forget to brush your teeth and floss, sleep at least 8 hours a day’ etc. She’s really his mom (and yet I ship them like titanic (minus the catastrophic sinking))
Yes mom, thanks for remembering my phone, I would’ve forgotten it myself XD I’ll call you if I need someone to pick me up :P
At first it’s cute how you two are shy about it, but then at one point I get fed up and just set you up so you can finally hold hands and be happy. I don’t even try to be subtle anymore. I’ve had enough of that XD
Nah, that’s not weird at all. It makes perfect sense ^^ A lot of people I know are like that! One of my friends doesn’t accept hugs/touching from anyone, including family and very close friends.
It’s a rule of the universe. If you ship it, it’s not gonna be canon.
THE NEW CHAP. DAMN THE NEW CHAP. I’m mostly (only) emotional over Urie, though. I’ve stopped caring about the others a long time ago ^^;;;
Whoah, that’s pretty interesting! I’ve never played the game or seen any playthroughs, but still. The Oggai are not to blame for what they’re doing. If I was abducted when I was that young, I’d probably be an obedient puppet as well..,
One thing I can say about the designs: they’re suffering. Other than that, the sketches are a tiny bit messy, but they do seem to fit their personalities well ^^
And thank you <3 I change my icon quite often, so don’t be surprised if you find a new one often :P

INTERVIEW: MODERN WOMEN
Sarah Gottesdiener is an old friend and the modern woman behind Modern Women — an LA-based design, art and consulting institution that exists somewhere at the intersection of feminism, magic and winsome tote bags. Sarah developed a healing and self-awareness practice and accompanying workbook based on the phases of the moon. For the past two years, we’ve carried the workbooks on our shop, where they've promptly hot potatoed off the shelves into the eager hands of future witches. Sarah was kind enough to take some time out to talk to us about her life and work, the ways of soft power and how the moon can heal and help us.
Ace: Hi Sarah. You are an old Ace friend!
Sarah: Yes. I remember when Ace Hotel Portland was just getting built. [VP of Brand] Ryan Bukstein used to play drums for my band.
No way.
Oh yeah, Ryan's an incredible drummer. He's like one of the best drummers I know. Jesse [who runs Ace Hotel Shop] is a good friend. We just went to New Orleans together and stayed at Ace. I even interviewed for a job at Ace. I love you guys. I love everything you do.
We love everything you do, too. Is Modern Women a collective or is it sort of a moniker that you go by?
My background is in art and graphic design. Anything I put out for mass consumption is under the moniker, Modern Women. I also like using a moniker for this project because every book that I put out has many, many amazing contributors, so it seems narcissistic to just credit me when I have six other esteemed well-versed practitioners and various healing modalities contributing to the project.
That makes sense. Tell me about the motivation for The Many Moons Workbook? Did you see a palpable lack of self love happening in the world or humans ignoring the moon in favor of their cell phone screens?
So, this book’s origin story: It’s one part boring and one part magical. I had been teaching with this kind of method that I call Moonbeaming. I’d been working with the cycles of the moon for the last five years of my life and I saw kind of miraculous results both magically and practically.
I'm incredibly practical. I'm an East Coast Jew who was not raised to be hippy or woo-woo, so anything like astrology — or anything intangible — I've always been very skeptical of. This was kind of the most practical, tangible way of working. I started teaching workshops called Moon-Beaming. People started contacting me, like, "Will you teach in Atlanta?" "Will you teach in New Orleans?"
I'm like, Well, I can't just hop on a plane. I write on my blog pretty regularly. I share a newsletter. I’m on Instagram. But I need a way to get this out to a larger public. The magical part was I was just laying on my couch, tossing around the idea in my mind. Like, what do I do? Do I write a book? Writing a book seems insane. Writing a book seems like I'd have to dedicate five years of my life to it. I don't know how to write a book. I'm not a writer, by the way, nor have I ever really wanted to be.
So Spirit was like...I call it Spirit. You might call it the Muse, you might call it inspiration. Spirit was very clearly like, "You need to write a workbook. You're gonna do this for three years." I was like, "Okay, well when does it need to come out?" Spirit was like, "It needs to come out by January 1st." It was June at this time. I was like, "Okay!" So I did it, and it came out ... This is the second year that you guys have them on your shop. A year ago it came out, like right before January 1st. Nick of time, December 26th or something. That's kind of the origin story of it.
How did you get involved in Moon magic, as a skeptic?
I moved to Portland, Oregon, where you throw a rock and you hit a witch.
Ha. True.
A bunch of people I knew were either astrologers, psychics, intuitives ... I'm an intuitive. I'm a tarot reader as well. I didn't know that really until I moved to Portland, and met other people like me. I met a bunch of awesome women, and that’s how I kind of got started. I really respected them and, we would get together and do stuff, share. Again, it was just through meeting people and trying it myself.
Working with the Moon has been around since the dawn of time, there are a lot of resources around this kind of spiritual practice — everything from magic to astrology has been strongly tied to the moon for ages. I never tell someone to do something in the workbooks, or any time, that I haven’t tried myself, and haven’t had positive results from.
Yoko and the Moon posters by Sarah Gottesdiener. Photo by Nancy Neil.
What were those results for you?
Finding my perfect partner. Making my desired income. Finding a diagnosis for a chronic health condition. Getting debt paid off. Meeting really great people. Living life in a richer, more layered way. Becoming more present. Loving myself more. It's kind of filtered over into everything. Helping people. Getting to help others. It's kind of the gift that keeps giving.
How would you describe this Moon cycle work to, say, my grandmother?
The very basics are this: Human beings, before the Gregorian Calendar, for thousands of years, have used the cycles of the moon to mark the beginning of their month, to mark special holidays, to mark the new year. You see remnants of it in Christianity and in Western culture. Halloween actually correlates to a more Pagan traditional holiday called Samhain. Pagans and Wiccans use the Wheel of the Year, which correlates to the solstices and the equinoxes, and the points of celebration between them.
There’s light and dark and how it tracks. The first calendars were lunar. The Jewish calendar still is. I believe the Hindu calendar and the Chinese calendar traditionally is still lunar. Obviously, people who get their periods can schedule it according to the moon cycle. We’re sort of wired to be lunar in our DNA. It’s really only been in the five hundred or so years that we’ve used the Gregorian Calendar. For thousands of years before that, we used the moon.
The moon cycle is very, very natural and simple to work with. You can start a cycle with the new moon, where you begin a new project or set new intentions. Then you kind of do a check-in a week later, and then you begin to practically build in the world. The workbook takes you through all of this. The full moon is meant for gratitude, illumination, reflection, big big wishing, big big dreams, big big intentions.
In the waning moon period, which follows the full moon, you clear away anything you don’t want, or you clear away any habits or thought patterns, behavioral patterns that aren’t helping you get what you need. Then it kind of begins again in the new moon, so it’s a natural cycle that can correlate to any project, any process.
If you’re a creative person, the new moon would be the inspiration phase. It would mean making a mess and doodling and figuring stuff out and brainstorming. Waxing period would be, “Okay, I know what I’m going to do. I’m going to make a poster about love,” or whatever the hell it is. Then you do it and spend time doing that.
The full moon is looking at the project, appreciating it, being stoked on it, being stoked on yourself. Then the waning moon period would be getting rid of anything you don’t need anymore. Refining. Editing. Doing away with anything that’s taking away from your focus or your creativity. Only to begin again.
It’s a very natural cycle that you can utilize for just about anything, whether it’s super-duper practical, like, “I’m gonna clean my house,” or “I’m gonna get my fucking finances in order finally.” Or really magical, like “I’m gonna invite the best possible outcome for love into my life,” or, “I’m truly ready now to make six figures,” or “I’m ready now to move to another country,” or whatever crazy, out-of-bounds idea you can come up with.
I’ve tried it for the really really crazy stuff, and I’ve tried it for the really really boring, mundane stuff like, “God, I gotta pay off this debt.” And it’s worked for both.
What about the simple act of looking at the moon alone? Not for any analogous purpose or means to an end? Is there value in that?
That’s great. That’s actually what I tell people in my workshops. A lot of times people are like, “How do I practice? How do I get started?” It’s really good to take a walk every night, around the block, or if you have a dog, take that night walk and spend time with the moon. I’m really lucky, because I live in LA and I can see the moon almost every night.
Start taking stock of how you feel in your life around the major moon cycles. Like around the full moon, you might feel really energized and really jazzed, or you might feel incredibly depleted or really emotional. It really just depends on your specific experience. Around the new moon, around the full moon, again, around the waxing, the waning, it’s good to take note. “Hey, I can see the moon, it’s halfway lit up, that means it’s in the waxing period. How am I feeling? Am I ready to put the pedal to the metal? What do I want to do?”
The other really interesting thing about the moon is that, due to its orbit, we only see one side of it at all times. We never see the “dark side of the moon”. That’s really beautiful and poetic. We’re always looking at the same side, but we’re looking at it from various stages of illumination. The sun is lighting up the moon. We’re looking at the light of the sun lighting it up, seven seconds earlier, right? That’s the speed of light. We’re metaphorically looking at our consciousness, the truth of the matter. The sun correlates to activeness. So we’re sort of getting lit up on the stage of this blank slate every time.
The moon is our subconscious. The moon is our interior. The moon is what needs to come out in order to keep going. We’re looking at this really interesting interplay of light and dark, of consciousness and unconsciousness, of day and night, and I think that’s a really beautiful thing to remember when we’re looking up at it and engaging with it.
Amazing. Would you say that your audience base is primarily women?
I would say it's 92% women.
Why do you think that is?
I would like to ask a man why they’re not interested in this stuff, more than ask why a woman is. I’m not sure, but what I do know is there seems to be a correlation between the moon and between women of all kinds, however they’re identified. Trans, non-binary, in-between, femme, however you want to identify. There seems to be an inherent connection to women and the moon. I think that we’re having both a huge rise in feminism, and a backlash against feminism, right? Because every time we take a couple steps forward, they’re gonna try to push us four steps back. We’re seeing that in the laws that are happening. Obviously we’ve seen that in the election.
There’s a very, very long line of herbalists using the cycles of the moon to create their concoctions. Of shamans, of witches, of doulas, of healers utilizing the moon cycles in their healing works, in their practice.
There’s also this incredibly long lineage of these people being marginalized, oppressed and murdered basically from day one — having their healing practices taken out from under them. That’s why we see the preponderance of men in medicine when it actually was women who first were the practitioners. You see it institutionalized, through laws and the government, through violence against the “female” or “othered” body. The moon becomes this symbol, this metaphor for the divine feminine. There are masculine gods or deities that are associated with the moon in various cultures, but, I would say, that I’ve found most deities that are associated with the moon are feminine. It’s kind of this cross-cultural specificity of correlating women and women-identified people with the moon.
A lot of it comes down to intuition. While everyone is intuitive, women are generally considered more in touch with their feelings, and are more likely to be open to noticing how the moon affects them in nuanced ways.
Do you think that just by paying attention to these sorts of things, it can in a way be a political act?
Yeah. We've totally been taught that personal is political. Have you seen She's Beautiful When She's Angry?
No, I never have.
It’s on Netflix. It’s a documentary about the first women’s movement from the 60s and 70s. This saying “the personal is political,” this documentary makes a really good argument for it. As people who are female-identified, woman-identified, femme, non-binary, the other, it’s really up to us to try to see things in a different way. I call it a sort of soft power. We’re trying to do things in a way that’s loving and kind and caring. Soft power is listening. It takes longer, it’s quieter, it’s more subtle. But I think these are all ways that we can kind of utilize this idea of our intuition, of process.
A still from She’s Angry When She’s Beautiful
We've been taught in our society to compete. We've been taught in our society that there's a beginning, a middle, and an end, and that we're racing, and that we need to get a trophy, and if we don't get the trophy, then someone else will get it, and then we've failed. That's very patriarchal, masculine kind of thinking. This moon cycle is literally this kind of spiral. It's not a linear beginning, middle, end, like we see in movies, and all of these other sort of cultural references. It's a process.
We're not here to get one trophy, and beat everyone else out. We're here to get 75 million trophies, whether it's a trophy of getting up in the morning and taking a fucking shower, or it's securing a job, or meeting the person of our dreams, or getting rid of an addiction, or forgiving our abuser, or forgiving our mother, or whatever it is we need to do. It's this non-hierarchical kind of mode, and that's kind of this moon cycle. It's this non-hierarchical kind of mode, and that’s kind of this moon cycle. I think that's what we need to be taking into account, both in the realm of self-actualization and love, and at a larger, more societal level.
Yeah. It’s a radical way of thinking. I was thinking about how the feminist movement wasn't as unified as other civil liberties movements, and why exactly that was (and still is). I've often wondered if that's because of patriarchal society or heterosexual relationships — to love the quote-unquote oppressor doesn’t necessarily help one’s cause. And it’s not like it’s men’s fault; they suffer from patriarchy, too. But it’s just a deep societal internalization of “the way things are” that women have taken on. Can you ever really gain traction if your immediate household is divided? Feminism, or the dismantling of certain systems of power, in some ways introduces an entirely new way of moving through space.
Totally. In the light of this new U.S. regime, and all that’s going on right now, the focus for me needs to be on myself, and those who I love, who might be affected by this situation, no matter what their gender. I am choosing to focus help and attention on those otherized, marginalized.
The other thing, I think, is that oppressed groups, especially women — generally, because women are so intuitive and such sponges, which can be really really useful and helpful for us in certain ways, but really detrimental in others — tend to take upon the actions of our oppressors subconsciously.
I've really been finding myself, in the light of recent events, taking a hardcore look at my internalized misogyny. Where am I unfair to other women? How do I immediately jump to sort of a defensive or judging mode?
Have you heard of Shine Theory? It’s this idea that we must focus and lift other marginalized groups up. There's this really rad podcast. It's called "Call your Girlfriend.”
Oh, I love Call your Girlfriend.
They talk about Shine Theory. Then there's this really great magazine you should check out called Got a Girl Crush. All it is, literally, is a magazine of various female writers, artists and activists, and every issue is just a profile of 10 amazing women. The idea of Shine Theory is that we boost each other up, we look for the positive that is mutually beneficial. We congratulate each other openly. We help each other find jobs. I work at the Women's Center for Creative Work. That's where I rent my studio space. It's in LA and it's a center for women to come to work, to have workshops for events. The idea is that we're here to network. We're here to help each other. We're here to give each other props. We're here to support each other.
Yeah. It’s so important right now. I think about the kind of internalized misogyny that's directed towards one's self. The kind of misogyny that manifests in poor self-talk and instances of self-loathing.
Oh yeah. My work as a tarot reader, which is kind of like a therapist, and my work in workshops, I see it — we're so hard on ourselves. We're like unrelentingly savage. We're like the Pepe Frog meme savage to ourselves. Whether it's like "our shoelaces aren't tied right," "our hair looks weird," whatever, "the dinner was a little too salty," or whatever. "We're five minutes late." Whatever it is, we're like very much in a state of contraction, holding our breath. Like, "Oh my god, this email wasn't worded right. Oh shit, I'm five minutes late on the deadline, oh my god." Someone hits you and you're like, "Oh my god, I'm sorry."
We’re doing all these things and we’re still not cutting ourselves enough slack, and I think that’s part of the self-love aspect. My favorite question in the Moon Book, I believe it was in the one that’s out now that you guys carry, but it’s like, “Have you finally let yourself off the hook?” “Have you finally given yourself permission to breathe, and be amazing, and awesome?”
We are so much better than we ever give ourselves credit for.
What has been inspiring you lately?
The design of Bruno Munari, A Seat at the Table by Solange, Annie Dillard, the artwork that the PDX gallery Nationale shows, the talks of bell hooks at the New School, the many different strains of activism of this country that is rising, and that will continue to rise in the coming years.
What advice do you have for the young feminist just starting out?
You don't have to be perfect, you just have to start, and then continue in an authentic and consistent fashion.

Mr. Gloverman
Since so many of my imaginary boyfriends are actors, I sometimes can’t decide whether my heart belongs to the actor or character. A perfect example of this is Donald Glover.
Community is a show that I became alarmingly obsessed with several years ago. I had just moved to Toronto, and while everything in my life was exploding with potential and excitement, I was also scared shitless much of the time because Toronto is intimidating. My boss was intimidating, my commute was intimidating, even my local coffee shop made me nervous (because it was so cool I didn’t even know how to handle it – like much of this city).
I discovered Community that year and it quickly became my security blanket. I’ve always had a penchant for re-watching shows I love, but Community nearly broke my brain I watched it so much. I literally, and I mean literally, watched nothing but that show for almost a year. My roommate would occasionally coerce me to break from my psychotic obsession and watch something else with him, but otherwise I lived at Greendale. “Watching TV” meant “watching Community.”
Troy’s character was my favourite out of the gate. It’s hard to pick a favourite because a few of them really are worth worshiping, but if I had to toss a life raft to one of them, it would be Troy.
First off, his character story is awesome. A former jock prom king who embraces his inner weirdo when he meets his best friend, Abed. The two of them make one of the best comedic duos I’ve ever seen on television, but it’s Troy’s signature naiveté that destroys me. He’s got all of these fucked up leftover beliefs from his upbringing as a Jehovah’s witness, and he’s just this huge fucking ditz. He’s got this mystifying cluelessness that will make me laugh for the rest of my life.
But really, if we’re talking about swooning here, it’s not about Troy. Donald Glover’s performance on Community is exquisite. He’s got unbelievable comedic timing. Another aspect of Troy is this well of emotion he has just underneath the surface, and Donald plays it perfectly. Always calibrating, and allowing just the right amount of emotion leak out. He’s got my favourite whimper in the whole world.
I could appreciate all of his talents as an actor without swooning, but he leaves me no choice. Because even though Troy is this quirky, weepy weirdo, he’s got swag. Donald Glover can’t hide how hot he is, even if he wants to. I’ve got hottie radar so that swag wasn’t going to slip past me. And when I later found out that he raps (points) and also does stand-up (more points), it all made sense.
My love for Donald Glover was mostly innocent when he played Troy, but it’s like my crush on him hit puberty when Atlanta came out. It’s his show, which is in itself damn impressive. The plot, the vibe, everything about it is delectable. And then his character, Earnest (who I’m guessing is a lot closer to the real Donald Glover than Troy) is just sex on a fucking stick. Stripped of all goofiness, his hotness is fully realized on Atlanta. Chill, sarcastic, complex. With that fucking hair, and that fucking beard. And the fucking writing, full of shit that everyone relates to, but no one talks about.
Donald Glover is doing our culture a seriously smart and sexy service, and if my mental illness ever traps me in a fictional TV universe again, I hope it’s with him.

13 Must-Haves for Outdoor Spaces
Hi guys — Sarah here. I just wanted to pop in really quick and introduce a new contributor to the blog, Caroline!
I meant to introduce you guys last week, but I’ve been caught on the phone and getting really behind as usual (and, as always, I’m doing other things behind the scenes that are both gross AND fun AND leading up to a long-awaited reno! Jeez, how long has it been since I tore out my master bathroom? I am going to have a confession all about that later this week as well as what inspired me to start remodeling it again). But Caroline used to write for my team when I worked for an online magazine called Society South, and she’s assisted me in a few articles since then when I do freelance work. Over the last few months, I realized that there are giant chunks of time where writing a post to update you feels like ages (even if it’s only a week, I fondly remember the days where I used to post more frequently), and you don’t see my busy little legs kicking below the surface (the quote of the duck on a calm surface is incredibly apt in my situation!). So, I asked Caroline if she might like to contribute to the site every once in a while for trend-spotting and decorating ideas, much like I used to do a few years ago on Saturdays, but with a little more substance. I like her eye and her writing style, so I’m happy to have her adding some of her own content to the site. Here she is with her first post all about decor for outdoor spaces! I love some of the items she’s found, and each month she’ll be back with themed new finds I hope you guys will enjoy. Thanks, and welcome, Caroline! <3
Hey y’all, I’m Caroline and I’m so excited to join The Ugly Ducking House team! I love that I’m getting the chance to combine two of my passions — writing and design — for Sarah’s blog, and can’t wait to share more of my ideas with everyone. Even though the summer solstice isn’t for another few days, we’ve been lucky enough to have had such warm and beautiful weather early this year — which means extra time to enjoy being outside with friends and family (or just to get working on that tan). That’s why my first post features some of the coolest and handiest outdoor products to enhance your outdoor spaces — enjoy! *contains affiliate links*
Clockwise from top left: chair / lamp / feeder / table torch / hammock / bean bag chair / lawn mower / tunic / bug spray / fire pit / table / cooler / rug
June: you step out of your office to a burst of hot, humid air. You get in your car and nearly every surface burns to the touch. A pop song about fleeting vacation flings is playing on the radio. Ahh, yes, summer has finally begun. But before you get caught up in a day dream montage of grilling burgers poolside, waving sparklers with the kids, and eating too many popsicles, ask yourself — are you, or rather, is your backyard, actually ready? If you’re picturing pollen-covered, half-half broken lawn chairs; a pile of dusty, deflated pool floats; and a grill that’s near rust-damaged disintegration, then no, you are not ready for summer, my friend. Whether your backyard needs a total rehaul or just a little sprucing up, these outdoor products are guaranteed to upgrade your outdoor space and add a pop of fun just in time for summer to really get into swing.
Natural Wicker/Rattan Furniture – The light, natural wood look as been a popular minimalist interior design style for a while, but now it’s moving to the outdoors again. Retro-vibe rattan furniture gives your patio space a funky twist while still remaining neutral and inviting.
Inside Lighting Brought Outdoors – Bringing the indoors out is often achieved by incorporating comfy sofas or pillow accents into your patio seating design — but have you thought about doing the same with lighting? This solar-powered floor lamp brings the coziness of the indoors outside for an unusual, antique-like lighting effect.
Modern Bird Feeder – Bird feeders don’t have to be reserved for winter and certainly don’t have to be strictly utilitarian in style. Opt for a sleek geometric shape made of glass for a feeder that doubles as yard art.
Decorative Tabletop Torch – If tiki torches feel a little too cheesy-luao-birthday-party-backyard-barbeque to you, opt for a much chicer alternative to keep the bugs away. Fill this copper tabletop torch with citronella oil for a stylish way to stay bug-free without invoking a single hawaiian shirt vibe.
Hammock in a Trendy Color – Bright yellow is one of this summer’s top colors for decor, but think outside the box of throw pillows and pool floaties. A yellow hammock adds a touch of whimsy while still being functional, and the color will pop against a green backyard backdrop.
Creative Outdoor Seating – No more wooden Adirondak chair splinters for you! These outdoor beanbag chairs offer a casual, comfortable, portable seating option perfect for parties and catching some sun (just try not to fall asleep — no one wants an embarrassing sunburn!).
Robotic Lawn Mower – Also known as the “Roomba for lawns,” this little guy is perfect for those who hate cutting the grass in the heat and sun. Personally, I’m extremely curious what kinds of lawn striping or patterns this would create.
SPF or UPF Clothing – Whether gardening, grilling, or beachside, protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is a must. Give your sunscreen a hand by wearing some breathable SPF/UPF proof clothing that’s cute, as well as functional.
All Natural Bug Spray – Reduce the chemicals you put on your body and into the air with a tried-and-true, natural citronella spray. I discovered this awesome product a few years ago while on an annual family vacation in South Florida — let me tell you, this stuff really works! Added bonus: no stickiness and it smells great!
Copper Fire Pit – Upgrade your backyard fire pit to the on-trend metallic version that is sure to make any night-time soiree on the deck feel a touch more elegant.
Mosaic Tile Accents – One of this summer’s biggest trends also happens to be a great opportunity for a DIY project. Entertain yourself or your kids by decorating an end table, plant stand, or bird bath with colorful mosaic tiles.
Retro Patio Cooler – Coolers seem to always get the short end of the stick when it comes to design, which makes sense considering the wear-and-tear of countless tailgates and beach trips we put them through. With these retro and brightly-colored standing coolers, you don’t have to sacrifice an ounce of style for your outdoor space or the convenience of an ice-cold beverage. I recommend the turquoise color to continue the theme of bold and bright!
Bright Outdoor Rug – Drab, stained concrete; faded, weathered wood…this does not have to be the fate of your outdoor flooring. Add a colorful, textured outdoor run to create just as an inviting outdoor entertaining space as you have inside. Can y’all tell I like bright colors yet?
Even something as simple as adding a little color or testing a new product to make the sticky days more bearable (lookin’ at you, bug spray) can really make a difference when it comes to revitalizing and enjoying your outdoor space. So, I hope this list has inspired y’all to take your backyard swag up a notch — what’s your outdoors summer-fun must-have?

13 Must-Haves for Outdoor Spaces
Hi guys — Sarah here. I just wanted to pop in really quick and introduce a new contributor to the blog, Caroline!
I meant to introduce you guys last week, but I’ve been caught on the phone and getting really behind as usual (and, as always, I’m doing other things behind the scenes that are both gross AND fun AND leading up to a long-awaited reno! Jeez, how long has it been since I tore out my master bathroom? I am going to have a confession all about that later this week as well as what inspired me to start remodeling it again). <3
