Part 10 (1)
Warlock saunters vaguely through life (Warlock saunters vaguely into their lives part 10) - this work is around 20,000 words so will be uploaded in eight parts every week
work on ao3, part one, part two, part three, part four, part five, part six, part seven, part eight, part nine
The five years after the non-apocalypse passed quickly and peacefully.
And Warlock really didn't want anything to change.
In school, he had very few friends - really they were more acquaintances than friends - other quiet people he sat with in the library and the computer suite because everyone knew that they wouldn't disturb each other. Warlock wasn't even a hundred per cent certain on all their names.
After his last GCSE exam, he went straight home. It was physics and Warlock was pretty sure he lost all the marks except on the parts about Space, as Crowley had helped him revise that topic. There was talk about a party that all his year was invited to, but it felt presumptive to assume he was a part of that group.
The tube had become part of his everyday routine: headphones in, head down and praying that it wasn't crammed (though it usually was).
There was a well-done-on-your-exams cake waiting when he arrived home. Crowley and Aziraphale stood proudly behind the table with the cake on it. Smiling, Warlock walked over and gave them a hug. Neither of them really understood human school though they celebrated each achievement and somehow cake became a part of it.
Aziraphale began to plate some slices of cake while Crowley turned to him and asked, "How was school, dear?"
"S'alright," Warlock replied. "Hated the test but my physics teacher gave us sweets afterwards. I think she pitied us."
Crowley laughed and Warlock continued with descriptions of his classmates' looks of despair. Aziraphale chimed in with "Oh those poor dears. Were exams one of mine or yours?"
Leaning back in his chair as he thought, Crowley eventually said, "I can't remember. I think I did it but it could have been a favour."
"I swear," Warlock said, "if you didn't give me cake, I would be really annoyed right now."
**
Later that evening, Warlock laid on his bed on his phone. Somehow, he had become friends with Adam and his lot. Not so much Wensleydale and Brian (Warlock did get Wensleydale's help with physics as well though it didn't pay off). He spoke a bit with Adam who really liked plants, and Warlock had grown up in Crowley's garden so they had some common ground.
Mostly, Warlock messaged Pepper. They both did ICT as a hobby and as a GCSE (Brian also did the exam but only because he thought it would be easy). Pepper was also into social justice and Warlock knew the best way to be heard in both Britain and America through his father’s complaints.
(They also both liked romantic comedies and were too ashamed to admit it to anyone else)
Is Adam still prepping for the party? Warlock sent Pepper after their rants about exams died off.
Of course. Been planning this since his fifteenth. Warlock can feel Pepper rolling her eyes. He's even made a truce with Johnson because he can get drinks for the after-party.
That's dedication. How's he hiding it from his parents?
Convinced Anathema it’s a rite of passage. She's going to distract all the adults including your parents after the barbecue so we can go to the treehouse.
Sounds fun. And it really did. Since his eleventh birthday, it had become a tradition to throw a joint party with Adam. His parents were usually abroad so they travelled to Tadfield for roughly a week.
To you maybe. Adam’s been setting up rubbish bags and threatening to fight anyone who litters in his woods.
Haha so glad I don't help plan these things
Wish you did, Pepper quickly replied before sending another message, it's annoying that you can't come during Christmas or Easter
I know. Two more years and then I don't have to go back to my parents’ house.
Only two years. Can't believe we're all growing up. Pepper sent.
Yeah, neither could he. Growing up was a surreal thing. Changes happened without you noticing; he doesn't know when the last time he called Crowley Nanny was. He remembered being teased for having servants and stopped referring to Nanny in school. And then, it bled into his home life. Warlock wasn't sure if Crowley noticed because he never said anything, but it made Warlock a little sad thinking about it.
I know. Think Adam will mature once we turn 16?
Nope. Still be thinking he's the centre of the universe till someone knocks him down a couple of pegs
Warlock laughed aloud at that. Adam was regularly self-centred, but he meant well most of the time. Once, when they were thirteen, he didn't talk to Warlock for weeks after he couldn't come over for Christmas despite him explaining why. It took Pepper hitting him for Adam to apologise.
The year after, Adam posted a book about coding to the Dowling house. Warlock still wasn't sure how he got that address.
Before he could reply to Pepper, she messaged again that her mum needed her so she'd talk tomorrow. It was only ten so Warlock doodled in his notebook a bit; he could do rough sketches of a variety of plants and flowers without thinking. For his art GCSE, most of his coursework had been based around plants because he could use Crowley's garden as a source. A few years ago, Crowley had expanded to a greenhouse on the roof (which Warlock was pretty sure was closed off to tenants) and it was so beautiful and full of lush plants in there.
It was definitely one of Warlock's favourite places.
A couple of weeks later (most of it was spent catching up on sleep), Warlock packed for their trip to Tadfield. Technically, he wasn't a military kid like the others he grew up with who moved every few years. But, on the other hand, as a diplomat's son, he went on more short-haul trips so packing was a breeze.
Going through his mental list, he packed his clothes effectively so he could take his tablet and laptop. He knew Aziraphale would be taking enough books for the week so he didn't have to worry about that.
Suitcase ready and his phone on charge for the car journey, he went up to the roof. He passed Aziraphale prepping packed lunches in the kitchen: most likely simple sandwiches if he was trying to make something without magic.
It was a rare clear day and Warlock could see miles of the city all around from the rooftop however he couldn't hear the busy streets. Apparently, plants needed a calm, clean atmosphere (even though they were already in a greenhouse) so the roof was quiet and smelled of clean air and not the usual scent of exhaust fumes.
Pushing open the door to the greenhouse, Warlock was met with a warm wall of humidity. Crowley stood over some vibrant green ferns with his water sprayer, inspecting for any damage and threatening them.
"You all better grow well when I'm away," he said as the leaves trembled. "or you'll know what'll happen. I don't think any of you can survive a fall from a roof."
Warlock gently stroked a shaking leaf and it stopped trembling. As if communicating with the others, all the plants went still and Crowley turned to glare at him. "You and Aziraphale are way too nice to them."
"Yeah," Warlock said, "We're the ones who are too nice."
Crowley waved the spray bottle at him before giving the plants one last glare. Walking out of the greenhouse, Crowley asked, "Are you ready to go?"
To be honest, his stomach was turning. Each year, it was terrifying to be celebrating his birthday with people he only saw once a year and only knew because he was standing in the background when the world nearly ended.
"Yep, can't wait," Warlock said. He must have sounded convincing because Crowley told him to put his stuff in the car before going to find Aziraphale.
**
They stayed in the same rented cottage every year that was always empty despite it being the height of summer. Like the flat, it was a lot smaller than the house he grew up in, but Warlock preferred it. Every floorboard creaked and the chairs felt like they would collapse whenever someone sat on them but it was never empty.
Unsurprisingly, they arrived before lunchtime because of Crowley's driving, so they had the sandwiches at the cottage. Warlock had several messages from Pepper demanding he come into the woods as soon as possible because Adam is getting stressy about the party and someone needs to distract him.
Leaving Aziraphale and Crowley to sort out the cottage, Warlock jumped the fence in the garden as it was the quickest route into the woods. He only came once a year, but he could walk this path with his eyes closed. It was cool beneath the shade of the trees, yet the light that filtered through made the whole area a nice golden hue. The air had a similar feel to the greenhouse: clean, fresh and the furthest thing from the city air.
The first thing he heard was Adam's voice. "Hang the paper chains evenly in the branches," he shouted. Warlock walked into the slight clearing in time to see Pepper glare at Adam. "Please," he added reluctantly at her look.
No one was really sure if Adam still had his powers, but Adam swung round to lock eyes with Warlock as if he just knew he was there.
"Warlock!" He shouted and smiled widely. However, Warlock's response was cut off when a weight slammed into the back of his knees. Stumbling forwards, Warlock stopped himself from falling as Dog continued to jump and bark at him. For some reason, Dog was always overly enthusiastic around him and no one else.
"Hey," Warlock said as Dog ran over and sat down at Adam's ankles. "How are you?"
"Yeah, I'm fine," Adam said. "It's good you're here actually, you can help Wensleydale with the paper chains. He has no idea how to spread the colours evenly."
Looking over at the tree, Warlock could see what Adam meant. There was a large patch of red on one side of the tree, a couple of stands if blue next to it (where Wensleydale was precariously sitting) and other colours in a pile on the floor. If left to his own devices, all the colours would end up in distinct blocks which would just look weird. "Sure," Warlock said, "I'll save the tree."
"Thank you," Adam said earnestly. Suddenly, he shouted "Brian, no!" before running off to deal with another impending disaster.
On his way over, Warlock said hi to Pepper who was setting up some solar-powered garden lights. "We'll have to take some of that red down," he said to Wensleydale who was clambering down from the tree.
"Yeah," Wensleydale said sadly. He cleaned his glasses on his shirt and put them back on to stare at the paper chains. "I guess it would look better if they were mixed together."
"Yeah..." Warlock said as he studied the colours. "If you get back up in the tree, I'll pass them up and we can spread them out?"
"Sounds good," Wensleydale replied and he climbed the tree again. As they worked, they chatted mostly about the recent exams because that was the only common ground they had.
"How did your RE go?" Wensleydale asked. Warlock was grateful that they had quickly moved on from the physics paper.
"Alright I think," he said as he passed up a green chain. "But it didn't help that Aziraphale kept telling me about misprinted bible quotes. They were all I could remember in the exam."
"Oh, I read about some of those. I think my favourite was 'Thou shalt commit Adultery'."
Laughing, Warlock said, "Nah, 'the unrighteous shall inherit the Kingdom of God' is definitely the best one. It's amazing how these were so wrong with just little mistakes."
Finally finished with the tree (which now looked like an explosion of colour instead of a paint-by-number), Warlock realised that his stomach was growling. Brian and Pepper disappeared a while ago once they had finished their jobs and Wensleydale quickly left as well, claiming he was tired from scrambling around the tree. That just left him and Adam, who was trying to get Dog to stop playing with a scrap piece of paper that he was intent on tearing to bits.
"Dog, drop it!" Adam said. Warlock laughed as Dog ignored him. "Drop it," Adam continued sternly, "or no treats for dinner."
Dog dropped it and Adam looked at Warlock smugly. "I'm pretty sure he only stopped because you mentioned treats," Warlock said and Adam's expression faltered slightly.
No," he said stubbornly. "Dog understood the threat."
"Sure he did," Warlock said, filling his voice with sarcasm. "Well," he added, "I'm hungry so I'm going to ..."
"Come to mine," Adam interrupted. "My mum will be preparing dinner soon."
"Uh..." Warlock couldn't see a valid reason to refuse, except that being around the adult Youngs was weird, but he couldn't admit that to their son. "Sure," he said, "let me just message Crowley."
"Awesome," Adam said, and, as soon as Warlock put his phone back in his pocket, grabbed his arm and started dragging Warlock to his house.
*
Excluding all the supernatural elements, Warlock wondered if there was anyone else in a similar situation where the child was the one to know that they were adopted and not the adult.
He couldn't help thinking about it as Mrs Young pulled him into a hug and Mr Young gave him a firm handshake. Really, he looked nothing like Mrs Young who shared the same light hair and soft face with Adam, and the only similarity he had with Mr Young was the dark hair colour that his mum also had. Adam, though, did actually look like their son despite not being related.
The situation was strange and Warlock usually tried to ignore it, especially around his family because his father could not find out he wasn't biologically his.
It would be the straw that broke the camel's back; it would be all the excuse his father needed to disown him.
"Sit down," Mrs Young said, ushering Warlock and Adam to the dining table. "I'm making bangers and mash so I hope you're hungry."
"They're vegetarian by the way," Adam said to him.
"Yeah, that's fine," Warlock said. He knew that Adam went vegetarian a while back and that his parents followed his example. Anyway, you could never go wrong with sausages and potatoes.
Warlock could hear the sound of ceramic plates being set out and the kettle whistling in the kitchen. Despite his reservations, Warlock did love being in Adam's house. It was loud and full of life and reminded him of the times when he, Aziraphale and Crowley tried to make a new dish together (with varying degrees of success). It was also the furthest thing from the empty estate that he used to live in.
Once everyone was sat down and eating, Mr Young turned to him and asked, "So, what exams did you do Warlock?"
"Uh, ICT, RE and art," Warlock said, "plus English, maths and combined science of course."
"A good range," Mr Young said, meeting Warlock’s eyes as if he was genuinely interested, "Your parents must be proud."
"Yep," Warlock said, quickly shoving a forkful of mash into his mouth so he didn't have to say anymore. He was pretty sure his father's lecture on why he should do more useful subjects like politics or business lasted an hour when Warlock told him his chosen options.
Thankfully, Adam started talking about the party. He omitted the part about the truce and Johnson bringing alcohol but he waved his cutlery around as he spoke about all the decorations and the games they' were going to play in the woods.
"I'm thinking that we play games that we used to play as kids," Adam said, as though he never stopped playing those games. "Forty forty in is good in the dark..."
"How do you play?" Warlock asked.
Adam turned to look at him with wide eyes, "You've never played?" Adam said. Warlock looked away slightly from his shocked look. As a child, the only game he could remember playing was soccer (well football here, that was probably the only American thing about Warlock) when some of his mother's friends brought their children round. Names of games like 'bulldog' and '123 home' were suggested if he remembered correctly but soccer was the only thing they all knew so they didn't have to waste time explaining it. He never had regular friends to develop these kinds of games with.
"No..." Warlock eventually said, focused on the food in front of him as he cut the sausages into tiny, regular pieces. "I've never heard of it."
"That's fine," Adam said, his cheerful mood not at all affected. "You can be on my team and we’ll destroy the others."
"We never played in teams," Mrs Young added. "If you was IT, you had to do it alone."
"Well, in my version there’s teams and it's more fun when you have someone to work with."
"Okay dear, finish your food," Mrs Young said, gesturing to Adam's half full plate which he had been ignoring whenever he spoke.
They finished in relative silence and Warlock helped Mrs Young carry the plates into the kitchen as Adam took Dog out into the garden. "You're such a polite boy," she said, "not like the chaotic demon I raised." Warlock laughed though it was more at the fact that she didn't know how right she was. "Are you excited for the barbeque tomorrow?" she asked.
"Yeah," Warlock said. "Thank you for hosting it again. They're always brilliant. This will be the fifth one-- won't it?"
"Oh its no trouble," Mrs Young said, dismissing his praise with a wave of her hand. "I can't believe you're all growing up so fast. Soon, you'll be at university and then adults. First, it was Adam's sister and now Adam. Oh God," she paused and wiped her eyes, "I better stop before I start weeping."
Warlock scuffed his feet against the floor. "It's alright," he said, feeling like an intruder. Adam had told him late one night in a rare honest conversation that his older sister visited less and less and that it made his mother upset. In return, Warlock told him how his parents had been distant growing up and he disliked people like his sister, who selfishly took their parents' love for granted.
Adam didn't argue with him. He only said that he was glad Warlock was with Aziraphale and Crowley now.
"Go hang out with Adam," Mrs Young said as she shooed him out of the kitchen. "I'll get Arthur to help me."
Leaving her shouting for her husband, Warlock went into the garden where he found Adam laying on the recently-mowed grass with Dog. The sun was just setting, turning the sky red (Warlock hoped that meant the weather would be good tomorrow for their birthday). Sitting down next to him, Warlock saw that Adam's eyes were closed but he knew that Adam was aware that he was there. He waited in silence until Adam opened his eyes.
From his position sitting up, Warlock had to lean over slightly so he could make eye contact with Adam. "Are you going to stay there all night?" he asked.
"Maybe," Adam said with a smirk. Honestly, Warlock wouldn't be surprised if Adam actually did as he always seemed to belong more outside.
"In that case," Warlock said as he stood up, "I'll be heading back to sleep in a proper bed."
Adam groaned but scrambled quickly to his feet. "I'll walk you back," he said. There were grass stains all down his back and loose stands in his hair. Warlock tried to help by picking some of the pieces out but stopped quickly when he felt Adam still beneath his hand.
"You don't have to," Warlock said, feeling slightly guilty for disturbing him.
Adam waved him off. "I want to," he said, smiling brightly.
Adam took them along the main road instead of the through the woods even though it was longer. Surprisingly, Adam kept quiet (only interrupting occasionally to ask questions) when Warlock spent most of the walk talking about some new plants Crowley had gotten recently and how they were so pretty Warlock had already drawn them many times trying to capture them right.
Finally, they reached the cottage. Pausing at the gate to say goodbye, Warlock was shocked when Adam pulled him into a quick hug. Adam pulled away too soon for Warlock to hug him back and said, "You're so going to love your present tomorrow."
"I bet my present for you is better," Warlock said almost automatically as his brain was still processing the hug.
Adam laughed and said, "Doubt it," before running off.
When Warlock woke up the next morning, his memory of his conversation with Adam was crystal clear while the rest of the evening after that was a complete blur in his mind.

(1)hey, I hope you're having an AMAZING day today!! okay moving on, that's fair honestly, and I wouldn't expect it to be practical unless someone made an AU with language as a focus in particular but it's like an interesting side quest so I keep it at hand; ajsd poor wind but that's //hilarious I love it!! haha imagine them trying to make sense of zora 'evolving' into rito [it def wasn't evolution] aaaa yes love that but does this mean some of them looked up to the previous links of their world?
i’m having a really good week actually thank you anon!! i’ve been super busy and tired though which is why it’s taking me a while to answer ask and upload art– i’m sorry!!
but anyways– responses(and doodles!) are once again under the cut!
Childhood Heroes:
Yes!!! a lot of them have heard of/look up to previous Links in their timelines! for example, Wind’s home island has many traditions derived from Time’s legends, and therefore he’s been his childhood hero since he was just little
Tumblr media
the main ones who get looked up to by almost everyone else are Time, Minish and especially Sky, since their adventures all took place before the timeline split. Minish doesn’t get quite as much praise since the main part that was taken away from his legends was that he could shrink, which then was twisted into fairytales that no one really believed happened(which is why we gave him the unofficial title as “the Thumb Sized Hero” just to get that point even more across asdfgh) so he doesn’t really get recognition :( Time is a bit more popular, but the only timeline where he really made an impact was the adult timeline(as in, Wind Waker and Spirit Tracks) where the only one who was super into his legends was Wind since Engi was too busy hearing about all the cool shit his grandpa did to hear about old washed away legends, and the two other timelines don’t really go in his favor a whole lot,,, in one he straight up fails and dies and in the other one he died as a knight instead of a hero and Twi only really knows about him because of the whole Hero’s Shade thing he pulled which is also just :( poor boys
Sky however gets absolutely PRAISED i tell you what……. everyone absolutely admires him for being the “first” and forging the Master Sword(which he denies he did because to him Fi Was Not Just A Sword He Forged God Dammit) as well as being awestruck by the concept of a hero sent from the heavens. he does Not like being bothered all the time but it’d be a lie to say he doesn’t like the attention it brings him he just pretends like he doesn’t want that either because hes a grouchy little shit asdfghjkl,, but yeah basically everyone thinks hes cool as shit even though hes just as stupid as the rest of them are
Tumblr media
(dont worry he does this sometimes hes just tired asdfghjkl,, also sorry for rambling but i just LOVE to talk about how they interact and their stupid antics and legends and stuff,, its so fun)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ah i see thats probably why i havent seen it asdfghjk but yeah i cant see it either hes just a big dumb goof in my eyes
Height:
i actually got an ask earlier about height differences and i’m currently trying to make a height chart to post for that one!! but while we wait for that, i can tell you that they’re mostly around the 5′6″ area, with the exception of Time who’s the tallest at a whopping 6′8″ tall and Minish who stands the shortest at 4′4″(he is the youngest too but he was stunted by shrinking too much on top of already being small for his age so,,, rip my tiny bitch asdfghjk)
Sleeping:
some of them, especially ones like Time, Alti and Wild, actually do have sleeping problems/insomnia, but most of the others almost sleep too much(especially Sky and Wind the lazy bastards asdfghjk) i think it’s safe to say that the only ones who have healthy sleeping patterns are Twi, Engi and Warrior, the rest either sleep too much or too little,, most of them are pretty alright when they wake/are woken up, other than Sky and Minish who are, in fact, not morning people and do not like being disturbed in their precious naps(as funny as it would be to watch the concern on everyone’s faces as Sky wakes up happy and ready to take on the day asdfghjkl i love that honestly)
Tumblr media
Sky Being A Big Grumpy Grandpa:
well basically he’s got one main mood which is just,,, tired. wants a nap. you know how when dads sit on the couch and just doze off while sitting? that’s what hes like at all times. Hes Everyones Exhausted Grandpa. he’s sometimes a bit grumpy and likes to bicker at times but he doesn’t tend to be downright nasty and can be pretty calm and soft towards(Zelda) people he’s very close to,, he doesn’t really express himself in that many other ways on a typical day though, he just wants to take a nap as soon as possible even if hes already slept like 30 minutes ago
AAAAAAND i think that should be it for now??? again, i’m working on a height chart for the rest of the gang which i’m gonna post via another ask!! thanks again for sending asks though anon it’s always super fun to answer all your questions and do little doodles for the scenarios!!! hope you have a great day too!!

tradition // kaneki x touka (genderswap)
tg is over now and i’m still finding ways to recover from it, but i remain incredibly thankful for my experiences reading it and especially for all the good stories and memories i’ve made with @neimana ♡ this is my birthday gift to her! ♡♡
this is a fic based off her genderswap/school au, which i hilariously can’t find any links to, but trust me that the concept exists and the art nei has made for it is SO. CUTE... ////// i truly swoon at that kirishima-kun.
once again nei~~ thank you and best wishes for your next year!! 💞💖❤️💞💖❤️💞💖❤️
~2800 words, contains lots of kissing and kiss marks. excerpt:
Their first kiss — was —
A surprise. Kirishima-kun, suddenly leaning over her — their eyes meeting — his gaze not the usual crystal, but instead so soft she felt her chest bruise. His hands rested, gently, on her hands.
She closed her eyes the moment it happened, and sank into it completely. It was...warm. Slightly wet. Tinged with a staggered exhale of all the feelings they’d held in for...for years. Their first kiss was...was...
Almost a whole week ago.
:::
It’s not like she wants to be kissing…like…all the time. But since that last time, she’s been — just — ...thinking about it a lot. And even though they kissed a week ago, nothing else really seems to have changed between the two of them. They greet each other in the morning before class — they stay after school in the library to study — they walk together to attend their part-time cafe shifts, and then give each other one last farewell at the train station.
Nothing has changed. And yet, everything has. Didn’t they used to talk a lot more? Didn’t Kirishima used to berate and complain about everything? Why is he so quiet now? There are times he seems to be staring at her, and about to say something — but — there, there he does it again. The moment Kaneki turns to him, he looks away. Presently, he rests his head on his desk, on his crooked arm.
Maybe he didn’t like kissing her after all. Kaneki tries and fails to swallow down the sudden fear swelling in her throat. She was in such a warm daze immediately afterward that she can’t really remember his reaction to it all, can’t really remember if his expression as he held her after was calm or content, or if at that time he was actually already sick of her and the fact they had stopped kissing because the salt of Kaneki’s own tears had interrupted them.
”Why...are you crying?”
”W-why...? I…”
Kaneki stares down at her hand, which is extremely close to Kirishima’s hand. The library is quiet, and a quick glance confirms no one is paying any attention to them. So if she reached out...just a little...just to touch her hand to his, just for a moment —
She lunges before she can think any more about it — just as Kirishima’s hand moves, to turn the page of his book. Kaneki’s hand drops on the table with a smack. Kirishima blinks; heads crane; Kaneki straightens, feeling her face turn red.
“S-sorry!” she says, and then she winces, and repeats it in a whisper: “Sorry. Sorry.”
Attention turns away from them, eventually, probably. She is too embarrassed to confirm. But she can tell Kirishima is staring at her, waiting.
“Are you alright?” he asks, finally.
“Yes,” Kaneki replies. “I’m fine. Sorry.”
I’m so stupid. And tiring.
“Sorry,” she says again, for good measure.
She stares down into her book, not trusting herself to look up. After a moment, she feels something warm. Kirishima’s hand — settling on hers.
“There’s nothing to be sorry about,” Kirishima says. He turns her hand over, rests his fingertips in her open palm. The characters on the page blur suddenly. Kaneki opens her mouth.
“Sor…” This time, she catches herself. She sighs.
“Are you alright?” Kirishima asks again, and this time Kaneki admits it, blurts it, helplessly: “I just like you so much.”
“O-oh,” Kirishima says. His hand curls up a bit, but honesty is too great a relief, and now Kaneki finds she can’t stop.
“I was worried about why we haven’t really — done that since last week,” Kaneki continues, “And I wanted to apologize to you — if I wasn’t that good — I mean, it was my first time, so I — I didn’t really know — and I know I cried a little but —“
“Kaneki,” Kirishima mutters, “y-you’re — too loud —“
“Wait, I just need to say — I think I was only crying because I had — so many feelings about it — good feelings. I mean, not because it hurt or because I hated doing it myself, it just — all I want to say is, it wasn’t your fault at all so if you thought that — I hope you didn’t, but just in case — basically, if you want to stop all this between us, I” — she feels her eyes start to sting again — “I guess I would be okay with it but —“
“What?” Kirishima hisses. “You would be okay with it if we broke up? Is that what you’re saying to me?”
He spoke at the usual volume. This time, everyone around them remains determinedly staring at their textbooks.
Kaneki swallows.
“No,” she says. “I...I wouldn’t.”
Kirishima stares at her. She stares back.
Kirishima sighs.
“Let’s go somewhere,” Kaneki says finally.
“Where?”
“I...I don’t know. Just...somewhere.” She closes her book. She steels herself, and asks it, firmly: “W-will...you come with me?”
He could easily say “no.”
No.
You’re too much.
I’m done.
“Okay,” he says.
:::
In the end, they don’t go too far. Kirishima is the one that suggests it: the rooftop garden, of course.
“There’s something I want to show you anyway.”
There’s a secluded spot that receives shade and light at all the right parts of the day, and now, in late summer, the breezes it gets are pleasantly cool. Kaneki smiles, slightly, when they get there.
“You know, the first time I saw you, you were up here. Walking to this spot.” Kaneki points at the library windows across the courtyard as they make their way around the wall. “I was sitting right there. When I saw you I thought maybe I was just imagining things, since you can’t really see anyone if they’re sitting down.”
“The first time I saw you I was up here too,” Kirishima says as they settle in.
“Wh...really?”
“Yeah, down in that library. Rize and Tsukiyama would be searching all over for you and never figured out that all you ever did every day was hide out in there.”
Kaneki grimaces. “Kind of pathetic, huh?”
“No,” Kirishima says. “It’s nice in there. When someone isn’t talking really loudly about embarrassing things, anyway.”
“Haha...I guess so.”
She smiles at the ground. They are side by side. There’s enough room for both of them to sit without touching, but their elbows nudge together, and Kaneki waits a bit, and Kirishima doesn’t pull away. For a while they just sit, in comfortable silence. Kaneki feels her heart speed up, and then slow. This is fine. This is...nice.
“I haven’t really seen Rize-san or Tsukiyama-san recently,” Kaneki says thoughtfully, and Kirishima grimaces.
“They’re just biding their time. Actually...actually, that’s what I...kind of wanted to talk to you about.”
He quiets, opens his mouth, then closes it again, purses it into an uncomfortable frown. It’s frankly the kind of expression Kaneki has seen him make a lot in the past week, and though her initial instinct is a sort of panic — “You...want to break up, don’t you?” — this time, she catches it.
That isn’t it.
This is Kirishima-kun we’re talking about here. Kirishima-kun who taught her, in his own way, how to make coffee. How to survive in this school. Kirishima-kun, who went after her when she was in trouble. Who waited for her for so long after she left him behind, and still took her back.
“You can tell me,” she says, instead, encouragingly. “It’s okay.”
He looks at her, and sighs. Not from frustration, but relief.
“Okay,” he says.
:::
“At this school there’s a...a kind of...tradition.”
It would be a lie to say Kaneki had never noticed it before. There was the time she had accidentally burst in on Nishio-senpai — and back then in the chapel, she had noticed it on Nishino-senpai, too — patches of darkened skin — kiss marks. It seemed embarrassing to notice them at the time, like witnessing something private. Kaneki never would have guessed they’d have any particular meaning, much less something as deep as This person is claimed.
This person is mine.
“If you don’t want to do it, that’s fine,” Kirishima says quickly, but Kaneki breaks from her reverie to shake her head.
“N-no — no, I — I want to.” She feels her face warm. “I...really want to. I’ve just...never done anything like that before.”
“I think you just sort of...suck on it. Hard.” Kirishima coughs. “Not that I’ve done it either.”
“I want to do it,” Kaneki repeats firmly. “I — I can do it first. If you want.”
“...alright.”
They hesitate, and then shuffle a bit, so they face each other. Kaneki waits, and then, realizing that she’s waiting, Kirishima fumbles quickly with his shirt, attempting to tug his collar over the space of his shoulder. There’s no way he can expose any skin doing this, and when he realizes it, he grimaces and loosens his tie. After it falls, he makes his way through the shirt buttons — loosening them one by one — all the way down to his belly.
The first sight of his skin makes Kaneki’s face even warmer. Kirishima-kun...well, she knew he was a pretty strong guy from experience, but he — definitely also — kind of — looks it. Muscles-wise, that is. To her surprise there’s a little marking on the right side of his chest, a little spot she never could have guessed the existence of, which she reaches out and touches before she can quite stop herself. He is...firm.
Kaneki clears her throat. “Okay...okay. Now?”
“Sure,” Kirishima mumbles. “Any time.”
It takes another minute or so for them to shuffle around until she has a position that feels the most comfortable  — then another short while for her to move his shirt over and expose a stretch of skin. He tilts his head over to give her a better angle to it, and his bangs shift; when she glances at him she can see him watching her with both eyes, waiting. She smooths her hand on him.
“Here...?”
“Yeah...sure.”
Kaneki wets her lips, and then leans. Even though she’s already kissed him, there’s something different and — and strangely more intimate about kissing him somewhere that’s not his mouth. As soon as she makes contact he jumps, a bit — and his skin feels warmer than she expected — and when she feels brave enough to lean into it, to press her tongue to him, she feels his body shiver in a way that makes it much easier to kiss him a second time, and then a third, and a fourth.
She would think someone like Kirishima-kun wouldn’t like this kind of messing around — she almost expects him to say something like, Just get on with it already — but he doesn’t. He sighs, and her chest swells, and she decides to do it, right then — her lips pursing — and then, after a deep exhale, suck.
His body shudders under her, again. She hears him exhale, slow. Their hands fumble against one another and grip messily, and Kaneki isn’t sure how long it’s supposed to take so she keeps going, sucking fervently until Kirishima whispers “That’s probably enough.”
She leans back to survey, and uses the back of her hand to wipe the saliva from her mouth, and then from the skin at the base of his neck. It’s kind of pinkish there.
“Is that...alright? It doesn’t look…very dark. Was I not doing it hard enough?”
“I think it’s fine.” He prods it gingerly. “I think it will get darker after a minute or two.”
“Oh. It didn’t...hurt, did it?”
“No. It actually felt...” He coughs. “No, it didn’t hurt at all. I’ll do you now?”
“Y-yeah! Yeah.”
She waits. He waits.
“Unbutton your shirt,” Kirishima says. “Um, just a little, probably.”
“Right! Right.” She fumbles hastily, undoing the bow of her necktie and casting it aside, then making quick work of the top button of her uniform. She’s only finished the second button when she realizes just how much of herself she’ll be exposing. Her face is probably vivid, now.
“You...don’t need to go much farther than that,” Kirishima murmurs. His hand reaches, cradling her head gently, turning it aside. He moves her shirt aside, carefully, then rubs his finger on a spot at the base of her neck that suddenly feels incredibly sensitive. “I can do it right there.”
Okay, Kaneki tries to say, but she doesn’t quite have the breath for it. Kirishima shifts, and she shifts to meet him — her back pushes up against the wall. She looks up to him in surprise and he kisses her mouth — full, gentle, encompassing — and she wilts. Her hands move up against his chest, not to push him away but to feel just a little more of him, and the two of them stay that way a while, kissing, their bodies moving on their own, shifting and pressing and interlocking, to find the best way to be closest to each other. In the haze of things Kaneki only barely notices Kirishima stroking her face with his thumb, then placing it against her mouth to occupy her while he finally moves elsewhere — kissing her cheek, her chin, her quivering throat — making his way steadily, carefully down.
When he gets to the decided spot, he pauses, and when he stamps a kiss there, Kaneki’s hand — resting on his back, she realizes — grips him.
“It’s — ticklish,” Kaneki gasps in explanation, and Kirishima watches her carefully. He kisses her again; she grips again. This time her legs stiffen, all the way down to her toes.
“You’re not laughing.”
“It’s...it’s really ticklish, seriously.”
“Then should I stop?”
“Don’t,” Kaneki says, and finds herself adding, “please,” and she feels little stars in her belly when Kirishima smiles at her warmly, and presses his mouth to her again, this time with a light flick of his tongue that makes her release a tiny, embarrassing sound. Before Kaneki can apologize for it, Kirishima takes her hand, and squeezes, and then, finally, sucks.
“O-oh —”
Whatever sensation she was expecting, it wasn’t — quite — like this. She buries her head against Kirishima’s neck, clutches him, feels him. He sucks for only a handful of seconds before releasing to lay a kiss on her, and then repeats, and repeats — and what moves her isn’t so much the sensation of him kissing her itself as it is the thrum of his fast pulse against her brow — his ragged breathing in her hair — the tiny wet noise of his mouth. He is everything to her in this moment, he engulfs her totally, and his hazy expression and licked lips tells her that for him, right now, there is only her.
“Crying again?” he asks. His gaze is warm. Kaneki swipes at her eyes, and realizes he’s right.
“Ah...haha. I guess so.”
“It didn’t hurt, did it?”
“No...it actually felt...” Kaneki rubs her cheeks. “It didn’t hurt at all.”
“Good,” Kirishima says. “Because I...might have...done it a little too much.”
The pink spots go almost halfway up her neck. Later, Kirishima waits outside while she blushes at herself in the bathroom mirror, trying and failing to adjust her uniform so that everything is all covered up.
Though, she can’t help thinking, if Rize-san and Tsukiyama-san happen to see it...it wouldn’t be…that bad.
The marks probably would have gotten even more extensive if they hadn’t been interrupted by a couple droplets of rain. It’s coming down hard by the time they make it to the school’s front gate, and Kaneki opens her umbrella up, and the two of them head out to the cafe.
“I’ll do better next time,” Kirishima says.
“Next...time?”
“Yeah. Well, they fade, so...so you have to redo them once in a while.”
“Oh. Once in a while...like a couple of days?”
“More like a couple of weeks.”
“Oh.” They pause at a stoplight. Kaneki shifts her weight from foot to foot, then clears her throat.
“Maybe we should check up on them again tomorrow?” she asks. “Just...in case. I mean...I wouldn’t want them to go away too soon.”
Kirishima considers.
“Maybe we can even check after work today,” he agrees.
In the end, the day is slow enough that they find time to check about a dozen times before their shift is over. Afterward, heading to the staff room to change, both of them complain properly about the pain of maintenance before they press against each other again. This time Kaneki swallows, and then turns her head in the other direction, shyly exposing the side of her throat still uncovered in pink — and Kirishima flushes, and obliges.

shay’s favorite tv shows from 2017
this has been in my drafts for.... nine months.... fuck.
Written in December 2017, updates are from September 2018.
Considering how many new, innovative shows are around these days, I didn’t get too adventurous this year, but I’m satisfied with the ones I did watch. I discovered new shows, I was impressed by the shows I’ve been following for years, and I learned to appreciate the work that goes into television more. Here’s my top ten TV shows..
10. Thirteen Reasons Why - In all honestly, this is only here because I haven’t been able to watch Peaky Blinders yet, and it’s probably too late. (UPDATE: Watched it in Jan and it was amazing.) This show received a lot of backlash, and for good reason, although it had its moments. The characters were well-written, the relationships were given depth that is often lacking in other high school-set narratives, and the tone was great. I’ve always loved watching things that make me profoundly sad, and this show did just that. (UPDATE: Season 2 was fucking garbage lmao.)
Standout episode: Tape 1, Side B. It’s a cripplingly depressing show, but this episode stood out as a moment of light in Hannah’s dark reality. Her friendship with Jessica and Alex was nice in the beginning - their banter, them having a spot in the coffee shop. I remember assuming Alex was gay (I believe his actor is, so I wasn’t too off) and thinking that’d be good for Hannah, to have a guy friend who wasn’t interested in her and wouldn’t add relationship drama to her life. Boy, was I wrong. Still, having seen the show at the beginning of the year, this episode is the only one I remember as enjoying, so it gets this spot.
9. A Series of Unfortunate Events - I read the books in elementary school, and they’re one of my favorite series of all time. I’m also a huge fan of the film, though I know most aren’t. So I was very excited for this series, and it didn’t completely disappoint. While I found myself longing for the actors from the 2004 motion picture, and some of the directing decisions weren’t choice, it was cool to see The Miserable Mill finally come to life, and I loved the Baudelaires just as much here as anyone else. I’ll be tuning in to next season, since I’ve very, very excited to see how they handle the next three books. I can’t wait to meet the Quagmire triplets, and Esme, and Jacques! It’ll be awesome. I hope they portray it well, but there’s no film to compare it to from here on out, so maybe it’ll be different.
Standout episode: The Reptile Room: Part One/Two. Like I said, I wasn’t a huge fan of how most of the characters were portrayed in this adaption, but I did love Uncle Monty. He was just as wonderful as he was in the film and books. Watching his interactions with the kids was really nice, and as always, made me wish they could’ve remained with him. Stephano wasn’t as menacing here as he is in the film (that knife scene is the point in the film where you go, “woah, this dude’s for real. he’s scary”), which was a bummer because I still thought Olaf was a laughably bad and incompetent villain by the finale, but I did like Poe’s hysteria, and I really loved the movie theatre scene.
8. Riverdale - Oops I never wrote this dfdsbfjdbfjds.
7. South Park - While we all can agree the last season was a mess, and this one was only a slight improvement, it did have it’s moments. I’ve been a fan for five years now, so at this point, they’ll never disappoint me, tbfh.
Standout episode: Doubling Down. While Put it Down was wonderful, both satirically and because of Craig and Tweek’s adorable relationship, the eighth episode of the season was my personal favorite (UPDATE: Not sure why ‘cause I didn’t specify then and I’m not sure now.)
6. Dear White People - I didn’t do this one either damn.
Standout Episode: Chapter V. While the show is a comedic take on racial relations, this episode is an emotional, serious change. The Barry Jenkins-directed episode shows us that the subject is no laughing matter, and it very clearly deserves this spot.
5. Rick and Morty - Yet another show I discovered this year, during the summer. I’d been meaning to watch it for ages, and I finally got around to it. While the fanbase is pretty much poison, the show is pretty damn good. Maybe not what it’s hyped up to be, but great none-the-less. I’m a big fan of adult cartoons, and RaM isn’t entirely satirical like South Park, and it’s not self-aware like BoJack, but it holds up. It’s probably so popular because of how unique it is.
Standout episode: The Ricklantis Mixup. While my personal favorite of Season 3 was The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy, because I adore Jerry, I think we can all agree that the was the best episode of the season, if not the series. Like, really. Holy shit.
4. Gotham - I began watching this show last year, and caught up to season three around halfway through it. It began to drag a bit, admittedly, like it couldn’t carry it’s own weight - but now the show’s on season four, and it gets a little wild sometimes, but it’s holding quite a bit better, I’d say. I was pretty fucking impressed, especially with the Nygmobblepot stuff.
Standout episode: A Dark Knight: Queen Takes Knight. Although Mad City: The Gentle Art of Making Enemies from Season 3 is a close runner-up, for all the loose ends it ties up, and so cleanly, too - the winter finale gets this spot. It had me on the edge of my metaphorical seat (since I was actually curled up in bed) the entire time. While Sophia’s character and her motivations had remained muddy since her introduction, her badassery finally came to the forefront, and it was awesome. The way she tore down Penguin from his throne? Incredible. We know he’ll return, as he has so many times, but really, that was so incredible. Considering he’s my favorite character, I should feel worse. However, Sophia executed her plan so well, I was too awed to hate her. Also, Jerome’s back! I’m extremely excited to see Jerome’s role in the upcoming episodes. (Update: Oh, honey, you got a big storm coming...)
3. BoJack Horseman - I binged the hell out of this show just before season four came out, because it was so creative and thought-provoking and hilariously depressing. The fourth season was notably wonderful in a lot of ways, particularly because of Todd’s sexuality arc (the first out asexual character in a TV show!) and how well it was handled, but also because of the mature themes they took on. Princess Carolyn’s miscarriages, Diane and Mr. PB’s failing marriage, BoJack’s struggle to forgive his mother, Beatrice’s own troubled upbringing, Hollyhock’s eating disorder. I watched the whole season in three days when it was first released, four months ago, and I’m currently considering re-watching it after rereading the summaries of each episode to refresh my memory. I’d forgotten how phenomenal it was. It’s on another level - it really is.
Standout episode: Time’s Arrow. Though there wasn’t a single weak episode this season, this one definitely stood out. Following the tradition of uniquely depressing eleventh episodes, Time’s Arrow focuses on BoJack’s mother and how her turbulent childhood affected her. Gorgeously executed, it makes us pity the woman who made our favorite alcoholic horse the way he is, and it concludes with BoJack making peace with his mother, who he had spent so long resenting. It’s just a gorgeous episode. I think I’m going to rewatch it right now, haha.
2. Mr. Robot - I’ve wanted to watch this show since it came out, but I finally began and finished the first two seasons just weeks before Season 3 came out. Since I’m discussing my favorites of 2017, I won’t be talking about those first two seasons here. I’ll be focusing on Season 3, which has been, in my opinion, incredible. What began as a modern, nerdy take on Fight Club has become so much more; a masterfully dark and suspenseful fictionalized look at the looming political state of our world. We’ve gotten new characters (Irving, who’s a gem), we’ve learned more about older but mysterious characters (poor repressed Dom), we’ve had to say goodbye to old characters (I’m still mad about ******), and best of all, this season has been Tyrell heavy, and we even got to see Elliot make peace with Mr. Robot.
Standout episode: S3/EP8, eps3.7_dont-delete-me.ko - The previous episode had already established a gorgeously melancholy setting through the use of Mac Quayle's gorgeous production 2.0_6-madame3xecutioner.oga, which, as a huge fan of film scores, I instantly fell in love with. The song is featured during a scene I watched several times - the scene when Angela repeatedly rewinds the explosion, unable to cope with the reality of it. It left me feeling similar to the way I had after watching American Beauty for the first time - like the world was a different shade. I thought this would be the only moment the show could invoke that response from me, but then the next episode came out. Unlike Ep. 7, Ep. 8 didn’t have a single moment. The whole episode brimmed with pain and sadness. The show’s already sad, but the lonely, isolated feeling is often overwhelmed by the suspense, drama, and excitement. This episode let the characters hurt without interruption, and it was wonderfully emotional.
1. The Get Down - I was so thrilled when I discovered this show in April, literally a few days after Part 2 had aired. I downloaded all the episodes for a road trip, and literally could not put it down the entire tme. It blended all my favorite things - the art of rap, the origin and evolution of hip hop, how battle rapping/deejaying came to be. The music was stellar, the cinematography was breathtaking, the acting was (for the most part) wonderful, and the cast was fantastic. I’ve seen some criticizing it, because of its occasionally choppy narrative and the fact that Baz Luhrmann added his usual whimsical take on something that was historically fairly dark, but I thought it was flawless. It was definitely groundbreaking in its amount of representation, and it was fun and colorful and emotional and, overall, just absolutely wonderful. Like many others, I was pretty devastated when they cancelled it. I understand why, but I wish it could get the Sense 8 treatment and receive a movie. There’s too many loose ends - it’s a real bummer. Still, I’m grateful we were blessed with this gem of a show at all.
Standout episode: S1/EP11, Only from Exile Can We Come Home - The final episode gets this spot for a single scene; the one where it alternates between Mylene singing “I’m my #1″ in the hotel room with Jackie and all the drag queens, and the scene where an unreleased Miguel song is playing while Dizzy & Thor paint on each other, and then Shao calls Dizzy his “alien brother.” That scene was easily one of my favorites I’ve ever seen in any show, in my entire life. If that episode was a film, that scene alone would guarantee it a spot on my favorite films list. It was that good.
