You hate it there. The school was a real drag and you couldn't stand being there any longer than you had to but the world was cruel and in hopes of getting a proper job one day you had to have graduated from university with grades that would shine like stars in the night sky.

You hated being in the classroom filled with people who didn't care shit about you and why should they? You hadn't exactly been talking with your classmates since... You started school a year and a half ago. You knew you could have made friends, but you hated school, you hated people and you hated yourself.

Especially when Professor gave back your exam and you saw a big fat C on the front page. You felt your stomach drop and despair clutch your heart. Another C...

You looked over your shoulder, watching after the professor, but he was already at the far end of the class. You swallowed as you put the exam away and waited for the class to end so you could talk with your professor. The class ended half an hour later and you wanted to approach the professor but he was surrounded by your classmates. So you waited and finally, when the other students had left, you approached the older man.

"Uh, professor? About my grade... Do you think I could take the exam again?" You asked bashfully and the man looked at you. "I'm afraid to tell, but all grades are final."

"B- but... I can do better. I just need some time." You swallowed, "Please professor Ratchet, let me take the exam again."

"Is everything alright?" Ratchet asked and you frowned in silence before nodding, "I guess..."

"Look kid, I'm going to ask you..." Professor Ratchet cleared his throat and looked at you seriously, "Is everything alright with you? You aren't being bullied or anything?"

"N- No, sir." You frowned. The old man nodded, "Is everything okay at your home?"

"I live alone." You blurted, but it was true. You used to live in this small town, but when you had gotten into Cybertronian University you had moved onto your own from home. The professor sighed and took his huge calendar and looked through the days. "I can't let you take the exam again, but if you want I can get you some remedial instruction."

"I..." You really didn't want that, but it might have been what you needed. "Can I think about it?"

"Sure thing kid." Professor nodded and looked at the clock that hung over the classroom's door. "Now get going. School is done by today."

You nodded and bid your professor good day before leaving. Only a handful of students were scattered around the university and you were one of them. You went to the front door and were about to leave when thunder suddenly roared and it started to rain like crazy. Typical Autumn rain.

You groaned. You didn't have an umbrella. Just your luck. Well, you would have to suck it up and take off. You pushed your school bag against your chest and ran out into the rain, but you had a plan. There was a 24/7 market just around the corner and they usually sold everything, umbrellas included.

You entered the store and the cashier looked at you as water dripped down your hair and clothing. You didn't dare to say anything but smile awkwardly as you took a shopping basket and went to search for food and an umbrella. Noodles for your poor ass, energy drinks for your night owl life, and a cheap umbrella.

You paid the cashier and left the store quietly before opening your new umbrella and setting on your journey back to your apartment. You tried to dig out your ear puds but you couldn't find them from your bag so they must have been left in your apartment.

"Shit. This day can't get any worse." You cursed by yourself and kept going while listening to thunder wreck havoc above in the clouds. As you thought what a crappy day you had you saw something orange peeking from an alley and you stopped for long enough to see what it was.

"Oh, you guys are adorable! What am I going to call you?"

It was a man with a bright orange jacket and a rucksack big and full enough to last for a long hiking trip. At first, you thought he might be drunk or on some sort of drugs as you listened to him talk by himself so excitedly. You were about to leave when you heard the tiniest meow and you stopped on your tracks. Cat?

Carefully, you patted the man's shoulder and he looked over the said shoulder at you. You blinked. "Uh, is everything okay?"

"Hello! I'm Wreck-Gar!" The man greeted you happily and stepped aside enough for you to see a cardboard box that was just about to crumble into wet mush in the hard rain... but what caught your attention were the 4 little kittens in the box. Your felt like your heart was about to jump out of your chest and you awed.

Wreck-Gar smiled, "I found these little guys! Cute, aren't they?"

"Very cute." You nodded and looked at him. "Are they yours?"

"No, I found them!" He turned and took a folded paper from his pocket and gave it to you. "They had this with them!"

You took the paper and read the message. "Free Kittens." You frowned but Wreck-Gar was smiling. "Aren't we lucky! They are free!"

"They're orphans." You said and looked at the man. "They should be taken to shelter. Can you do that?"

"Sure!" He said with a wide smile but you frowned, remembering that all the shelters were probably closed by the time you would make it to one. School had stretched and the sky was turning dark. One of Autumn's many miracles. "They can be taken tomorrow. Do you have a home where to take them?"

"No! I just came to the city!" He said like nothing was wrong. You blinked in and wondered how he could be so happy? He is soaking wet, he has nowhere to go, and now he has four little lives in his arms. You weren't prepared for this. You were getting anxious, you had to get away.

"Ah... Okay." You nodded and turned to leave, "G- good luck!"

"Bye-bye!" The man called after you and you managed to step out of the alley before your feelings took over and assassinated your common sense. Fuck it. You turned around and raised the umbrella over the man's and kittens' heads. Wreck-Gar looked at you over his shoulder and smiled, "Oh, you came back!"

"Yes, uh... Do you have any place to go? Friends or something like that?" You asked, but Wreck-Gar shook his head, still smiling. "Nope! But I have a tent in my backpack! I can sleep in the park!"

He could definitely NOT do that! The cops would take him straight to the station and you didn't have enough money to send him to a motel. Aah, you felt a headache coming. Must have been thunder and this big man's constant happiness. Not only that, but you felt weak from hunger. You rubbed the ridge of your nose with your fingers and looked at him. "Would you like to come and spend the night at my place?"

You didn't believe it was possible, but Wreck-Gar's smile got even bigger and he jumped up on his feet from his crouching position and you were taken aback by how tall he was and you got to experience it as he hugged you tightly against his chest.

"I'm so happy! Me and kittens get to stay with-!" He stopped and frowned in confusion, "What's your name?"

You told him your name and he cheered up again as he repeated your name. You tapped his arm and he seemed to realize that he was hugging you a little too hard. "Oh, my bad!" He said and kneeled back down to grab two kittens and he offered them to you. "Will you help with kitties?"

"Yeah, sure. Hand them over." You nodded and carefully took the black and white kittens into your arms while trying not to drop your umbrella. Wreck-Gar got the last two kittens and you two started walking through the rainy city streets until you got to your building complex.

You inserted the key and opened the door, but just before you stepped inside you turned and looked at Wreck-Gar seriously. "If you try anything stupid then or I'll scream loud enough for neighbors to call the cops."

"Right! I won't try anything stupid!" He said and you had a feeling he was being genuine so you let him in and you took an elevator to your floor. Once there, you used your keys to get inside and flicked the lights on.

"Shit." You cursed when you realized what kind of a mess your apartment was. Empty noodle cups and empty energy drunk cans were scattered everywhere

"Did you have an accident?" Wreck-Gar asked and you blushed in embarrassment, "Wha- No! My apartment is a mess!" You cried out before shame washed over you and you took off your shoes and he copied you. Both of you put the kittens down and the little things immediately started to meow. You smiled and put your bag down. "Let's get you and kittens warm. You can sleep on my couch this night."

Wreck-Gar looked at your couch covered in clean or dirty laundry, you weren't sure anymore yourself either, but he was still smiling. "Got it! I'll sleep on the couch!"

"Just a second." You sighed as you grabbed your clothes and threw them onto your bed that weird enough was the only clean place in the small apartment. But just as you were about to go and search for the extra blanket you felt your headache turning worse. You had to sit down on your bed for a second, but Wreck-Gar seemed to notice you weren't feeling good.

"Are you okay?" He asked and you wanted to nod, but you couldn't. "Just... Tired."

The kittens were meowing and you wanted to help them, but your body seemed to shut down. You could rest your eyes a little bit. You closed your eyes for a moment to stabilize your breathing but you didn't open them... Not until a couple of hours later.

You groaned as you tried to recall what had happened, but your head was hurting too much. It felt like there were razor blades whirling inside your head. You groaned as you heard clanking here and there but suddenly the noises died out and someone pushed a cold glass of water into your hand and a pill to another.

You didn't even think, you just automatically took the pill and chased it down with water. "Thank you..." You muttered weakly before you buried your head between your pillows and fell back into sleep.

You didn't wake up, until the next day. You groaned, but you felt much better. Like, a ton better. You felt like a new person, but you still wanted to sleep... Until you heard meowing and your eyes snapped open as you bolted up. The kittens! Wreck-Gar! You looked around and saw the little black and white kittens chasing each other around the floor.

Wait. Your floor was clean? You looked around and saw that all your energy drink cans and empty noodle cups were gone. Also, what was that scent drifting through the air?

Suddenly your bathroom door opened and Wreck-Gar steps out of the little room, wearing your pink bathrobe and a towel wrapped around his head. The look on him was actually pretty funny and you snorted as you tried not to smile or laugh, but the man noticed and beamed like a sun when his brown eyes landed on you.

"You're awake!" He cheered before suddenly smacking his hands over his mouth and then whispering again, "You're awake...!"

You nodded as you looked around and then at him. "Did you clean here?"

"I wanted to help the nice person who helped Wreck-Gar and kitties!" He said and smiled as he rushed across the room to your small kitchen. You rubbed your eyes as you pushed yourself on your feet, grabbed some clean clothes, and went to take a shower. You let Wreck-Gar know that shower was taken and you got rid of your dirty clothes and took a quick shower.

You put the clothes on and stepped out of the bathroom, rubbing your hair clean dry with your towel and you were about to head to the kitchen but then you saw a bowl of soup on your coffee table in front of your couch.

"I made you soup since you're sick!" Wreck-Gar said happily and you blinked as you took a seat on the couch. "What is it...?"

"It's chicken noodle soup! Eat your soup before it gets cold!”

"How did you get chicken? I had nothing in my fridge." You asked and Wreck-Gar looked extremely proud of himself as he smiled, "I took all your cans to the recycle and got meat with the refunds!"

"What about kittens?" You looked at the four little furballs running around, but they didn't seem hungry. If anything, they had a lot of energy.

"I boiled some chicken for them also and shredded it!" He said and you turned to look at him. Wreck-Gar while you had been sick, this unknown person had cleaned, taken care of you and kittens, and made you all food. And that wasn't the end of it. You watched with eyes wide how the man took off the towel around his head and his long black hair fell over his shoulders.

You could feel a blush rise to your cheeks as you looked at him. You had been too tired and sick last night to take notice but Wreck-Gar was quite handsome. His skin was lightly tanned, he had a clean face with some mustaches that he must have cleaned up in the shower. And damn, he looked good as he tied his long dark hair into a bun.

Wreck-Gar notices you looking and your blush grew darker but he seemed completely clueless. He smiled instead and pointed at the soup, "Please eat! I called a doctor to check you!"

"You have a phone?" You asked and he seemed proud. "I have everything I need in my backpack!"

"Even local doctor's number?" You asked, but now you were just teasing him. You ate the chicken noodle soup he had made and you could feel your strength coming back to you.

A doorbell rang and you were about to let the doctor in with your control panel by the door, but Wreck-Gar was faster. "I'm buzzing you in, father!"

"Wait..." You blinked in shock, "You said you don't have friends or anyone to go to!"

"You didn't ask about family!" He said and you blinked. This man was either the most trusting and kindest man you have ever met or then he was that and dumb. Your apartment's doorbell rang and Wreck-Gar opened it for his father and-!

"Professor Ratchet?" You asked and the old man blinked in shock as his old eyes landed on you. He repeated your name in surprise and you looked at the younger man.

"You know my professor?"

"I sure do! Ratchet is my father!" Wreck-Gar exclaimed and your eyes widened in shock and you snapped your attention to your professor who looked like he was one now having a killer headache. He saw how you looked at him and shook his head. "He remembers wrong, I've told him I'm no father figure!"

"Ratchet and I met while hiking!" Wreck-Gar cheered. Ratchet grumbled under his breath as he walked to you and started to ask you questions about your health and how you were feeling. You told him honestly and he nodded, pleased that you were healthy again. "Must have been stress that got you. You can take a couple of days off from school, I'll let the other teachers know that you needed rest."

"Thank you." You were honestly so overjoyed that you could almost cry. Suddenly you heard a tiny meow and you all turned to look at the kittens that were interested in your professor's jacket. "I didn't know you had cats."

"I actually don't..." You frowned, "I found Wreck-Gar and he had found them in an alley."

"Of course." Ratched looked at the young man and grunted, "Wreck-Gar, you can't keep doing stuff like this!"

"I tried to help the kitties." He said and Ratchet crossed his arms. "I cannot let you stay here any longer and bother my student. Grab the kittens, you're coming to my place. We will discuss what to do with you there."

Wreck-Gar didn't seem to notice how serious the situation was, as he was still smiling. One by one they got the 4 kittens and Ratchet excused himself and his friend... But you couldn't let it be the end.

"Wait!" You called after them and they both stopped and looked at you. You blushed and swallowed your fears, "Professor, if Wreck-Gar doesn't have any other place to live... Could he stay with me?"

"Please, you don't have to feel any responsibility for him. I can take him off your hair." Professor said but you shook your head. "No, he actually took care of me instead of another way around. And I like him."

You smiled as you looked at Wreck-Gar who was beaming, "He isn't like other people I've met."

"I don't know... He needs to be taken out regularly and he needs very much attention and training." Ratchet said and you blinked. Did your professor just describe a dog?

"I think I can handle him." You smiled and Wreck-Gar cheered, "I get to live with such a nice person!"

Professor Ratchet grumbled but finally nodded, "Alright, but when you return to school after two days of rest, take Wreck-Gar with you. I'll get him a job there so he isn't leeching on you. Oh, and what are you going to do with the cats?"

"It's okay." You nodded as you scratched one kitty's chin, "I think we can find a home for them. Just like Wreck-Gar."

And you did. Your cousin happily took the kittens and found them a life-lasting home. Wreck-Gar moved to live on your couch and when you returned to the school, he got a job as a janitor. Not the most glamorous job, but he is good at cleaning and keeping the university in shape. He also made school less bad for you.

And... a couple of months later you and Wreck-Gar kinda started dating, but that was a story for another time.

Hanzo (Aka Scorpion)

Hanzo was a sweet cat until his kittens and partner passed away.

He soon became very stressed and lashed out a lot with his owner. Constantly hissing and at some point almost began scratching at them.

His owner knew he was missing something or in this case someone. Someone to be around. So his owner got him a friend!

Owner adopted a white cat with one brown and one blue eye. He had a scar on his right eye (Kuai). They just adored him and adopt his sibling, a black cat with light blue eyes (Bi-Han).

Hanzo avoided both of them at first but soon warmed up to the white one. He protected him from his big brother who bullied him.

When Kuai would nap he would stay awake on top of him to make sure his brother wouldn’t scratch him in his sleep.

Hanzo then began acting like his normal self now that he had a new friend and on his new medicine. He became more loving and behaves well.

Kuai (Aka Sub-Zero)

As a kitten, he was loved by his previous owner and so was his brother. But all of the sudden their owner turned nasty and one day lashed out at Kuai for spilling a cup of water resulting in the scar.

His owner then moved homes and left him and his brother in a box on the street corner near a shelter.

The shelter cared for them both and Bi-Han became at first protective of his little bro but soon he seemed to let go and on occasion attacked him for no reason.

Kuai and his older bro then got adopted by their new owner. He felt quite a lot of anxiety being in a new environment and often hid.

One day when the owner wasn’t home Bi-Han began to attack Kuai. The half black half orange cat (Hanzo) protected him from his vicious brother.

He soon got comfortable and loved his new home and his new friend.

Often their owner would catch them both sleeping in the same bed.

Kitana

Kitana is treated like a queen by her owner.

She loves bath time with her rubber ducks in the tub. Constantly pawing at them and pushing them under only for them to come back up.

Since her fur is white and fluffy it only makes sense for her to be cleaned often and she usually jumps in herself or when her owner is taking a bath.

She is very protective of her owner and goes EVERYWHERE with them! She follows behind them and at one point almost attacked a guy who began to argue with them.

She’s an emotional support animal for her owner and constantly brings comfort to them. Their owner sees it as a thanks for all the pampering she gets 24/7.

She has a half sibling (Mileena) who she at times bullies by pushing her in the tub on purpose or she’s sweet and loving.

Liu Kang

He’s a VERY GOOD BOY!

A Calico Cat he is! And a bad boy he is not!

He sort of had Romeo & Juliet thing going on with neighbor’s cat next door. Usually they just look at one another and are day by day stepping closer and closer towards one another.

Once their owners caught them napping on a tree branch. And later they were meowing so much because they couldn’t get down.

He likes toast for some weird reason. He steals it from his owner and at one point his owner took a picture of him with piece of bread stuck on his head. He wasn’t amused.

He has a best friend that he’s known since he was a kitten (Kung Lao).

His owner put a red headband on his head once and he got all hissy and angry when his owner took it off. They decided to leave it on him. He’s a happy boy now.

He was a good cat until his previous owner leaving him and his brother traumatized him and he began to lash out at his bro.

He still loves his bro but is usually mean to him.

He does on occasion clean his little bro as a way of comforting himself and his bro to trust him a little sometimes.

His owner got sad seeing him usually alone all the time so they got another black cat and now the two are inseparable.

Bi-Han has a little crush on a little half grey half black cat named Sareena. They had many kittens and sometimes hell bring one of the kittens home to care for.

Kuai at times feeds them food from his bowl because he loves his little nephews and nieces! Bi-Han steals them away because he’s a jealous baby.

His owner has been putting hats on him since day one. And he loves them!

He proudly walks around with his owner’s hand made hats on his head!

He and Liu Kang are mostly they only cats in their neighborhood to actually like wearing this stuff! From ribbons, to costumes down to knitted hats!

Bath time is his least favorite time. He’ll be a cocky little cat by breaking random stuff on a occasion until his owner had enough. They began taking him a bath and he meows so much out of disgust and the torture of it all.

He loves to sleep at his owner’s side acting like he’s protecting them from danger. When in reality he’s the one they should be watching out for.

He wakes up his owner at exactly 7:00 in the morning by playing with plastic bags.

Ailurophile’s diary : What it feels when raising kittens

I have two kittens which are around four months in house, and since their coming into the world it feels like everyday is a blessings. I know each of their appearances, their characters, and what differentiates them each other in detail. However, back before, there were four kittens in my house, named Hime, Kimi, Pablo, and Chiro. It was all started when I first came at home and found out that my Hwiroh had died after suffering with pain for more than one week. That was really a heartbreaking moment because all the places he was used to sleep reminded me of him, but, the only thing I found was only emptyness since he wasn’t there lying anymore. Soon after that, we (me + my siblings) had new kittens, and the best part was they seemed to be Hwiroh’s biological children, especially Chiro who had the same look with Hwiroh. No doubt we become fall in love with these creatures. Without their presence, I might have been drowned in sorrow longer than that.

To see those kittens ran over in house was really overwhelmed things. Pablo was the quietest but the cutest with his black and white colour. And do not be fooled with Hime’s appearance, she might be looking so weak and therefore was bullied, but there laid hidden strengths burried in her smallest body. Kimi was the biggest and the one who liked to bully Hime, she was the type of Calico cat with three colours on her body. And the last was Chiro who was the most similiar with Hwiroh. He had a love pattern on his body and liked to explore new places. Day by day, they became bigger, more active, and it meant that we had to let them out of the door. Then, it had been determined in one morning, so I and mom prepared their house as comfortable as possible. They would like their new house said my mom for several times to convince me. And in the afternoon, something terrible happened which broke me in tears. Since then, only two kittens left. This incident made me become more possesive towards them. I would never let those small creatures outside the house ever. The world outside the house is terrifying, there waits many scary things that would endanger their lives.

Despite many excitements, but comes along the responsibility to take care of them as the consequence of letting them inside. Every morning and afternoon, I and my sister clean up their toilet. But, the last incident has influenced these kittens behavior. Kimi is easy to be fear of the loneliness. Everytime she finds no one around, she would make a ‘sad mew’ which sounds like a cry in my ears. She may be traumatized due to the self-witnessesing the death of her siblings in the eyes. On one hand, Chiro is so much different. He is so active to go around alone, likeable, and easy to play with hoomans that might be probably because he had ran away when the incident and thus hadn’t witnessed what happened after that.

As they grow older, their moms was being lazy to nurse them which indicated that the kitten should be weaned from the mother and eating kitten food solely. In order to keep them healthy, we cooked them kind of porridge made from dry food which was added with warm water to make it softer, and sometimes we gave them wet food with egg. However, as the one who was heavily addicted to milks a lot, Kimi was kinda shock with such transition then refused to eat. She only wanted to drink her mom’s milk so bad. It was quite frustrating for me as seeing how her weight lost drastically due to her refusement. Thus, she was suffered with pain. In day one, she suddenly walked with a limp but still wanted to eat though she had lost her appetite. Day two, she only wanted to sleep over during the days and nights, and even refused to drink. Day three, I had prepared to take her to the veterinarian but fortunately she got better as she could eat well, though she was too weak to have other activities besides sleeping.

During her long illness, I and my siblings had given her favourite food and dripped water through the pipette to her mouth. I covered her with towel in order to keep hers warm. Everytime she looked wanted to take a pee, I took her to the box immediately since she limped heavily as she moved. I liked to pat her body while she was sleeping so she would feel comfortable. Those were all said from the articles I found on the internet which was telling how to nurse a sick cat. Because Kimi had been sick, Chiro lost his enthusiasm in playing and only slept over the time beside her. Luckily, soon after that, Kimi got better and could play along with Chiro again.

From this experience, it is true that after the storm there will be a rainbow. Kimi who was at first very closed and hard to be approached then changed to be the most adorable and attractive cat ever. She likes to play with me. Everytime I call her, she would answer by saying ‘mew’ nicely then walk towards me and shake her tail as the sign that she is happy. She likes to sit in my feet till fall asleep. Sometimes she would show her belly and I would automatically pet her gently. Having been experienced the illness made her got all attention, comfort, love, and kindness. May be she then realised that she just love being pampered. And as for me, after all the terrible mess happened, the most relieving thing is seeing that she is being happy, so a happy Kimi is a happy me! And a happy Chiro is a happy me! Nothing would change my mind.

So, how did it feel to raise kittens?

The experience of raising two kittens, many or less, has given me several pictures about how to raise my own child. All the emotions such happiness comes simply as seeing them happy, healthy, and enjoy their meals. It is said that in a article a healthy cat is an eater. Then we provide them fish oil so that they like eating. I may be kinda traumatized with the cat refusing her food, thus her immune was slowing down rapidly therefore she was easy to be suffered with pain. On one hand, there also comes worry as seeing them suffered with the pain and many other emotions coming one another as the time being. That was once ever happened in one day, it seemed to me that their fur was infected with fungus, then I was googling and found out that a mixture of turmeric and olive oil will cure the infection. And then, I made it.

And all the responsibility which suddenly comes and many things that are still needed to be learned more. Also, I get the feeling of possesion towards them. And, because of that, sometimes I might refuse other’s advice over them cause I may think that I know them better than anybody else. From nursing them, I get to know that every kittens as well as human being is not typically the same. We require to observe them at first, and then treat them differently based on their unique characters. If it sounds ridiculous for you, it’s okay, but I have been living with those kittens 24 hours on 7 days and self-witnessing how’s they have gotten a bigger size day by day. But their circle of life runs faster than us, like now they come at the phase at the peack of activeness in age 3 months or probably around 2 or 3 years in our age. At this phase, they like exploring anything, experiencing many new things, and playing over the house, making my mom dizzy to see what’s left after they make a mess of things. But that is a very normal things at their age, right?

So here’s a little note to you. You become responsible with what you have tamed. Though at the first, kittens would look the same in your eyes, but soon after you would find that yours always unique. Because, it is the time you had shared with them made them unique in all the world. Unlike us, cat is the animal that has honesty and pure heart. If you share love with them, they would pay exactly the same. And if you treat them badly, they would pay you the same way either.

First of all, this post actually has been postponed for months. And surely, many things have changed since then, but, still, I want to keep writing this so bad. Since I found writing is the least thing I could do to recall the sweet past memories with someone or something I love which wouldn’t be repeated.  As for me, one of the those things that wouldn’t be ever repeated again in the tomorrow or in the other days in the future is the time spent with Kimi. My lovely Imi who left us three days ago because of severe pain she had endured for three days. This is so sad that I know about this truth at the very late moment so there is nothing I can do to help her from afar. However, it seemed that, God loves her more than us do so He didn’t want her suffered that pain longer than this.

Imi, if I were able on your side during your time, I wished I could take care of you. Patted your body gently. Played along with you like the last time we did. But sadly, neither of us could do those sweet things again in the future. We are now separated by the time, right?

I remember again, the last day we met before I got caught by the flight, suddenly you came and then had a seat on my feet as if it was your last, so you didn’t want me to go. And even I don’t ever think that was really our last. Seeing you acted like that, made me harder to leave you in house. Since that day, I like to count the days left until I can go home again to meet my family, included my kittens who has grown bigger since then and waited me in house. But, now only Chiro waiting for me. May be that is why we should value every lives and times that has been granted for us.

…And this post is a tribute for my lovely Imi, who was so adorable and whom I owed the meaning of caring is everything. Enin will always miss you so so, Imi. Especially when you said ‘MAU! MAU!’ loudly which resembles in our language as to tell that you want something. But, you got to know this one word from nowhere, and you always said this word only in one condition, whenever you felt hungry. You were also so spoiled making me hard to leave you and always wanted to protect you. But I’m so glad knowing that you would never feel the fear of loneliness anymore. Because now you are placed to the where you used to belong and thus gathered with Hime, Pablo, and Hwiroh. Enin really hope that you would like your new home, Imi.

Review: Trusting True North

Synopsis:

True North Vincent feels lost and uneasy after the fear of a virus closes the border, meaning her mom can’t return home from Canada. With her father working long hours as a nurse helping people who are sick with the virus, she’s left at home with her grandma, who doesn’t have the energy to keep up with True’s adventures, or her older sister, always focused on her phone, or Georgie, her younger brother, whose severe asthma makes him more vulnerable to the virus. True is lonely and sometimes gets angry because she feels forgotten and unheard. True’s mom tries to talk to her by phone, but True refuses; she just wants her mom home in-person, not just her voice.

True finds escape and comfort in working on her maps, a skill she learned from her mother who is a cartographer. Not only does it fulfill her remote learning class assignment, but it helps to pass the time in isolation. She also creates an elaborate treasure map for Georgie that spans the entire thick forest beyond her backyard. While exploring, True finds the new kid, Kyler, playing tenderly with a litter of newborn kittens in an old barn.

Kyler knocked out Dakota Sullivan’s tooth during a fight and has a reputation of being a bully, so True waits until he’s gone before approaching the kittens. The smallest kitten, the runt of the litter, looks sickly and has been abandoned by the mama cat. True names her Teacup; she knows exactly how it feels to not have a mom around when you need her most.

As Teacup’s health worsens, True attempts to nurse the cat back to health by herself. Just when True thinks she and Kyler could be friends over their concern for Teacup, he starts acting strange and doesn’t return her calls. To make matters worse, True’s dad gets sick and must stay at the hospital, and then Georgie gets lost in the forest, and then their elderly neighbor gets the virus. True feels even more scared and alone. Running out of her own fixes and remedies, True reaches out and realizes that her family does care about her and wants to offer support and guidance to help her find her way through the unexpected challenges the virus and life bring.

Plot:

Just like her mother, True love maps. So much so, that she wears her name, True North, with pride as she draws maps of the world, the current book she is reading, and making adventures for her little brother George to follow. True has been spending a lot of time with George as the pandemic has kept them at home with online school, along with governmental rules to stay at home and not to meet anyone else. With their older sister Rose being too cool for them, their father keeping his distance due to his work at the hospital, grandma is too old to play, and their mom… Well, their mom is quarantined in Canada unable to come home. Feeling frustrated that there is nothing she can do, True breaks the rules and goes to the barn where she meets, and stays six feet from, the school bully Kyler, and a mama cat with four kittens. Well, only three, as Teacup, the smallest, is always kept away from the others, seemingly to grow weaker as the others grow stronger. Wanting to help Teacup out, True must make her own decision about Kyler, and whether or not to believe he is the bully others claim him to be, find the limit to how much they can help Teacup, and avoid the virus that is getting near and nearer each day. 

Thoughts: 

If anyone wants to forget the years 2019-2022, then this book is not for you. Sina Linko writes this story from the point of view of fifth grade True North Vincent, who is tired of living in fear of the COVID-19 Pandemic in the northern USA. Linko keeps it vague though, and where they do not mention COVID-19, you know it is based on the talk of guaranteeing, border closing, wearing a mask while keeping your six feet, and everyone's favorite: online school. The pandemic is scary, especially for True and her younger brother, who does not understand what is going on. They call it the virus and are afraid of catching it due to their grandmother's age and George’s asthma. What is not cool, is how Linko has True breaking the rules, spending time with Kyler, and knowingly risking exposing her family to COVID-19, even if she was doing a good deed. Sure she was wearing a mask and six feet, but True knew she was not supposed to be. For younger readers, True is not a role model to what to do in the pandemic, as she breaks the rules, does not give out any helpful advice, and where younger readers may see himself reflected in True, there is no hopeful message or moral at the end of the story besides “COVID-19 is scary and there is nothing you can do”. Well… that is the point, like many young readers, there is nothing they can do in this pandemic to make it better, and True displays that. Linko's writing is good, and I do enjoy the friendship that happens between True and Kyler, as True realizes you should not judge someone based on what people say about them. Overall, it was a fine middle-grade story, I was just annoyed throughout it as Linko talked about the pandemic almost every other page, but did not use it to move forward the story, and only used it as a reminder to point out when True was breaking the rules, and a source of True’s frustration.

Olivia Smith was born an old soul. That’s what her mum said when she first looked into Olive’s eyes, anyway. And her dad, who’s always been more of a realist, said all newborns do resemble Winston Churchill somewhat, but that didn’t mean their baby girl was really old, did it? Of course, he eventually realized just what his wife had been talking about.

Olivia was never really your typical carefree little girl. That’s not to say she wasn’t happy, because she very much was. She loved life. She seemed to be perpetually smiling, and her glass was always, always half full. She just happened to care about everything more than most kids her age did. She cared about really big things like war and hunger and the fact that people were suffering all over the world. She cared about slightly less big things like animals without homes and people in hospitals. She cared about everything she perceived as unfair right down to things as tiny as someone squashing a spider instead of just putting it outside. And she didn’t just care. She wanted to help.

Her allowance lasted exactly as long as it took her to run into someone begging in the street, or see a collection box for some cause or another. She gave bits of her lunch to the pigeons, the feral cats along the way to school, and even made sure to leave some crumbs out for the ants. She was horrified to find out where meat came from, and promptly became a vegetarian at the tender age of seven. And she stood up for those she thought couldn’t stand up for themselves. Which, as mentioned, included everyone from refugees in war-torn countries to ants her classmates carelessly stepped on. Her dad’s decision to send her to martial arts classes stemmed directly from her fear that her relentless “activism” would inevitably get her arse kicked at some point or another. It was very much a good call on his part.

The first big change in Olivia’s life came when she was thirteen and she lost her mum. It was an accident - nothing anyone could’ve seen coming or done anything to prevent. And old soul or not, thirteen was far too young to deal with the concept of random tragedy. There was no volunteer organization or charity fund or even research team that could’ve been supported so they’d find a way to fix something like that. You can’t stand up to dumb luck and shame it for being unfair. You can’t go out on the street and collect signatures to make stupid random accidents illegal. Faced for the first time in her life with an evil she could do absolutely nothing to fight, Olive chose to focus on what she could do instead. What didn’t make her feel useless. And that was doing what she did best: caring for others.

By the time she turned fourteen, Olive had become the person who kept their family running. Her dad was far too heartbroken himself to fight his younger daughter’s near-obsessive dedication to the family, and he was far more worried about Bea’s detachment from him than about whatever benign phase Olive seemed to be going through. Olive cooked and cleaned, made detailed shopping lists for her dad to follow, handled laundry and ironed shirts to perfection, and tried (and failed, she always suspected) to give her dad and sister all the love they were missing out on with her mum gone. And when Bea announced she was moving to the States for college? Well. Olivia more than supported her dad’s decision to follow her. Dumb luck might be able to tear her family apart, but a transatlantic move certainly could not.

Adapting to life in America was mostly easy for Olive. It was just herself and her dad now, and her life remained the same. She just had to take care of one less person now, with Bea away at college (which didn’t mean she didn’t send regular care packages to her sister, of course). Her own move to college was a little harder, mostly because she felt like she had to stay home and help her dad, but he made it clear her choices were college or moving out on her own. Having always been a brilliant student, Olivia didn’t have much trouble getting accepted at the college of her choice, and at eighteen, she finally moved into her dorm and found herself on her own for the first time in her life.

That didn’t last long.

Olive met Ben Parker her first week on campus, when she was walking home after an evening spent discussing the evils of capitalism and how to bring it down with one of the many student associations she’d joined in those seven days. Ben always said he knew she was the love of his life the second she looked at his brand new Hummer (his pride and joy, he said, and his secret weapon to get more girls than he knew what to do with) and asked him if he’d rather have a flier on capitalism or global warming. He chose both. And he biked to class the next day.

Olive could never pinpoint the moment she knew Ben was the love of her life, but she did. Soon. So soon, in fact, that they got engaged that first Christmas break. Everyone around them was more than a little horrified by the news: Olive’s dad thought she was far too young, Bea that she was positively insane for even considering marriage in the first place, and Ben’s parents that the heir to a Texan oil empire could do better than a vegetarian commie with an accent (their words, but she decided she wanted them on her headstone). The wedding was going to be in the Summer after her freshman year and his graduation, but they eloped during spring break, and they both hyphenated their last names. Which was the reason Ben found himself no longer the heir to a Texan oil empire. Not that Ben Smith-Parker and his acceptance letter to a Masters in Sustainable Architecture program cared too much about that.

Olivia’s second encounter with the cruelest version of dumb luck came that summer, a couple of weeks before the party they were going to throw in lieu of an actual wedding. It was once again an accident - nobody’s fault, no way to prevent it - and this time she lost Ben. Her usual coping mechanism failed her this time, since she had no one to take care of, and Olive spent the better part of a month trying in vain to find a reason to get out of bed each day. Eventually, she found it: if life was going to be a bully, she was going to deal with it like she did in her primary school years. She was going to stand up to it and fight.

Olivia decided right then and there to spend her life trying to make the world a better place. She went back to school that fall and joined even more associations, marched for even more worthy causes, handed out even more fliers and put in even more hours at her volunteer jobs. And it was one of those volunteer jobs that made her want to become a vet.

It’s been several years now, and Olive works at NYC’s ASPCA hospital. Her heart’s healed, she thinks - Ben will always be the love of her life, but that doesn’t mean she can’t ever love again. Maybe the Universe will make up for its past unfairness by letting her have two loves of her life. She’s open to it, at least, which is a big step. And until she finds that person? Well, she has her job, her many causes, and her sister to focus on.

Pets: Many or none, depending on how you define it. She’s a prolific foster pet parent, and there are never fewer than four dogs and/or cats in her and Bea’s apartment at any given time. She hasn’t adopted any of them (so far), though, so they aren’t technically hers.

Relationships:

Bea Smith: Olive’s older sister and the person she loves the most in the entire world. Although Olive’s always acted as the older sibling, and to this day she tends to be the one taking on the more adult role in their relationship, she admires her sister like only a younger sibling ever could. If you ask her, there’s nothing Bea can’t do, and the only reason she isn’t a star is that the world hasn’t discovered yet.

Rachel Berry: Rachel often volunteers with the animals at the shelter - she walks them and loves on them, and that automatically makes her one of Olive’s favorite people. She also has to admit, for someone who’s always been hopelessly low on the social hierarchy, having a drummer friend adds a coolness factor she’s not immune to.

Evie Miller: Olive and Evie met at ACup, but the second Evie found out about Olive’s work, visiting the shelter with Kay to make the less fortunate pups happy for a while became a near-weekly ritual. Olive considers Evie one of her best friends, and she may or may not feel something resembling a crush type situation for her, but she’s aware it’s very much one-sided, and has no intention to jeopardize their friendship for it.

Sam Evans: Sam loves cats, and Olive loves people who love cats. Especially ones who walk the walk and don’t just talk the talk - and Sam did just that when she convinced Quinn to adopt one of Olive’s littlest patients. Gertie’s well kitten visits are some of Olive’s favorite times at work.
