I've Lost My Passion For Writing

The title of this journal isn’t a joke. I have seriously started to lose my passion that I once had for writing.

I’m sure by now a lot of you have noticed I haven’t been writing any stories of any kind. Or at least anything substantial. You could say that those two stories I have shared about those really awkward plays I saw as a child or the only time I’ve ever actually gotten to play on a real Gamecube while in hospital count as stories but those are more just me retelling events form my past that have stuck with me. And there’s a good reason I haven’t been writing a lot. I’ve HAVE tried to write proper stories. About my OC’s, about fictional characters I like, but I always never get very far into it and sometimes just stop entirely or get distracted by other things I have more fun doing. And there’s a good reason for THAT two. I just haven’t been enjoying writing as much. It’s one of those things I have slowly been coming to terms with a lot recently. In fact the only long form things I’ve even managed to get written up the past few months have both been satirical and if you couldn’t tell from how I wrote those, my way of venting about how modern critics are obsessed with hyperbole and being overly angry and also poking fun at that “Nintendo has FORGOTTEN about Super Mario” video because nothing say’s Nintendo has “””forgotten””” a property like releasing so many games in that franchise in the Switches now almost 7 year life cycle.

To give you an idea of just how bad this has been, the last story about one of my OC’s I wrote was back in April of last year. It was a parody of the Peaches song from the Super Mario Bros movie but sung from the perspective of my girl Mikaela and she was singing about Nessa from Pokemon Sword and Shield as I do have the two in a relationship and loved that part from the film. And before that the last proper full story I wrote was in September of 2022 of Tom Nook from Animal Crossing finally being fed up with some people not paying off their loans at all and taking action tasking my sona Michael with collecting the debt from one of those residents who originally started as a joke OC I made for an April Fools day joke. That’s a pretty big gap to have as someone who is a writer which is actually why I originally tried experimenting with Micro Stories at first since they were only about like two or three paragraphs long and didn’t take much effort out of me. But even those I started to fall out of wanting to do.

So why have I stopped having a passion for something I use to love doing ever since I first started on DA? Well, it’s not for one single reason but actually a couple.

1; I’ve started to find it boring! No matter what I want to write, no matter how much I love the idea and no matter how much free time I end up getting so that I can do a lot of writing, usually about like 5 or 10 mins in I get board of writing and more often than not I end up thinking to myself “I would honestly rather be playing video games or watching a show I’ve been meaning to watch.” Plus, I can only write “this character said this” or describe what someone looks like or is wearing so much before I get bored.

2; Written work is something I’ve always struggled with anyway. I grew up on TV and video games and very little written stuff which might sound ironic coming from me but it’s true. I once tried reading one of the Harry Potter books as a child and I got one chapter in before thinking to myself “I’d honestly rather be watching the movie that’s based off this book.” Hell, I even tried reading the in game books in Skyrim but when I did I would always go “I’m spending my time in this game doing THIS instead of going on an epic and exciting quest?” The only time as a child I’ve ever read a book all the way though that wasn’t one of those ones that only had like two short paragraphs on each page and was like 15 pages long was in 2009 when a friend let me read an old Choose Your Own Adventure styled Super Mario book but that only because it was on a school trip, we were on a long train ride that took several hours and we weren’t allowed to bring our handheld games systems with us so there was practically nothing else to do. It’s a problem I have been trying to fix for many years and sometimes I do read stories on DA when I get the chance, but written works just always been something I’ve struggled with even as a child.

I mentioned before that this is an issue that my passion for this has been dwindling for a while and I’ve tried to find ways to get around this. At first it was writing little short stories to attach to my pics. I was mainly inspired to do this by the likes of other’s like IncredibleIntruder who like me is into hypnosis and especially belly dancing but also puts little short stories in the descriptions of the stuff he commissions and uploads to his page and still continues to do so to this day. I HAD experimented with this kind of stuff before coming across there content but it wasn't until I started seeing some of there commissions I really started to take my stories for my pics seriously. And I’d continue to do this for a lot of my commissions as well. Even if it was a pic the artist didn’t give me permission to upload like with that Symbiote Shantae and Rottytops pic I’d still write a story for it! And eventually, I just only wrote up a short synopsis of what happened in leading up to what we see in a pic in its description because I wasn’t having any fun with these stories anymore. Which again, sucks that I feel that way because I do think about this stuff a lot. Especially the pics based around my self insert sona, something I’m extremely proud to have created, because the whole reason that exists was born of decades of me having a hyper active imagination and always imagining myself actually in the worlds of the games I play, especially ones that let you play as customized characters such as Wii Sports Resort or Mario Kart Wii, and making up my own little Kingdom Hearts styled crossover universe but wasn’t just relegated to stuff belonging to a single property… And also the lore not being a headache to get used to.

For example, the pic of my sona becoming an Ankha Drone I had this whole story planned out while it was getting worked on of them walking into Ankha suddenly in their home on their island with two other Ankha Drones and would be the ones converting my sona into one of them. Then there’s the one of them in the coils of Naga Shantae which would have been right after an encounter with Risky Boots and both my sona and Shantae being very exhausted and Shantae offering some nice and snug coil hugs until we were both ready to head home. And the Techno Drone pic where the story would of involved them knowing about SuperTechno (the artist of that pic who’s sona turns characters into fembots) hypnotizing ladies into being his Fembots while still extending it to males, not being aware of the fact that many of the Fembots in Techno’s army were kidnapped, asking if he could allow himself to be a drone with one of the main reasons he wants this and allows himself to be hypnotized a fair bit is because of not having the best mental state, something I obviously am implying I sometimes have and this was my way of projecting onto them. Similarly, the Ashour Drone pic I got of my sona was going to have a story of them finding Shantae as an Ashour Drone and confused on why she’s the way she is which leads him back to Ammer (again, artist of that pic and who’s sona is a freelance hypnotist hypnotising willing people into being his Ashour Drones) and after looking into him and his drones a bit more offering to be one of his Ashour Drones for a similar reason to the Techno Drone one. Even my most recent pic of my Genie AU sona with Urbosa I tried to write a whole story of her originally finding the lamp and the two of them exchanging some dialogue before using hypnosis on her to influence her wish for a massage.

And yes, this applies to Mikaela pics as well. The collab I got with Violet Scales featuring both our OC’s I wanted to write a story of Mikaela stumbling upon a snake basket housing Jermisha during one of Mikaela’s erotic photoshoots as an explanation as to why she was already dressed in bedlah to begin with. The pic of Naga Mikaela mummified I wanted to write a story of her trying to surprise attack Eliza from Skullgirls to potentially add to her harem but backfiring and resulting in Naga Mikaela mummified by Eliza and coupled with some taunting from the 1000 year old Egyptian Vampire followed by her telling the Naga that she’s going to make a great display peace for her place. Even the pic of Naga Mikaela with Sharah I considered writing a story about her finding Sharah’s ring and putting it on not knowing that there was a cute genie girl inside and that’s how they met.

Hell, even writing this I struggled with doing and the only reason I pushed though was because it felt wrong to not have any new full-length stories without giving an explanation on why. Now at this point I’m sure a lot of you would be saying “Oh there’s an easy solution for this. Just use something like ChatBotGT or some other AI program to do the stories for you! Does all the work and gives you more time to do other things.” But I hope you NEVER fucking said that because telling me to use a style of generative content, which is notorious for being built of stealing other people’s work and passing it off as something ‘original’ just to get over my own lost desire to write is fucking stupid! Honestly, I think the better and more healthy option for me is to just stick with what I’ve been doing for the last few pics. Short descriptions and a brief summery that still add’s lore to my characters if needed. That might disappoint a lot of you who followed me solely for the writing but let me ask you this. What do you think is more important? Me forcing myself to slog though writing a story I’m not having fun writing and even if I do finish it my reaction will be more of a “thank God that’s over” reaction than any sort of positive one or doing shorter stuff that doesn’t take as much time to do and I know most people probably don’t even read anyway (sadly) so I can focus on what I enjoy more?

In fairness I knew this would happen eventually, because how many stories have you heard of creators who have lost their drive and motivation for what they enjoy doing? Need an example? How about Hideo Kojima who didn’t even want to work on Metal Gear Solid 4 originally because he just didn’t have the same passion for this franchise as he did once and the only reason he even agreed to work on 4 in the end was because of all the death threats he got from fans? Or how we almost got a new Jak and Daxter game in between the release of Uncharted 2 and The Last of Us but it ended up being cancelled because no one at Naughty Dog felt any motivation to make a new Jak game and they literally went “Are we really doing this because we want to or because of marketing reasons?” Or how about Geroge Lucas having to put up with so much hate and harassment from Star Wars fans though out the 2000’s just because of how he was telling the story that he created to the point where it just wasn’t fun for him anymore and gladly sold the franchise to Disney when offered without a second thought. (And before any revisionist historians try to comment “umm, no actually! That’s not it! Your just being a Disney apologist!” Clearly you don’t remember what George Lucas said in an interview one time before months before the Disney buy out. “Why would I make any more, when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a horrible person you are” anyone?)

So yeah, I’m sorry if this is sad news to anyone. But because I lack the passion I once had you really shouldn’t expect any new long stories for a good long while.

ever had a poem or a song written about you? : Yes. I was very not for it growing up and it was very cringe-y. 

when was the last time you played air guitar?: HAHAHA-- I still do this at my age. I think I did it when vacuuming and I was listening to “Meant to Be Yours” from Heathers. Air guitar plus vacuuming is a weird thing to do, but it felt right. 

who is your celebrity crush?: I know I had strong celebrity crushes growing up and even a couple of years back, I don’t really have something that strong anymore. Will I watch something with my biases? Oh Lord, I will. I look to you Dev Patel and Gwendoline Christie.

what’s a sound you hate; sound you love?: Yelling. Yelling is something I hate 100% hearing and immediately keep to myself when it starts. Can’t even bring myself to do it w/o bursting into tears, I also don’t like the sounds of certain chains when they jingle. Can’t explain why but I shudder at it and go somewhere else. I really love the sound of moving water (slowly moving liquid in a water bottle, for example) and crinkling paper. You can imagine what I play in the background when I do things-

do you believe in ghosts?: Iffy on the concept of ghosts. I waver between believing and not given my past experiences. As weird as it sounds, there have been stuff in the past that proves otherwise. 

how about aliens?: Not quite. 

do you drive?: Yup.

if so, have you ever crashed?: Yes. I was sandwiched in a three-way accident. The car behind me hit me so hard on my way to college (as a freshman) that I hit the back of the car in front of me. This was on the way to class early in the morning. There was a test that day too. 

what was the last book you read?: Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao! It is a terrific read and I cannot encourage and promote their writing enough! You may know them from their YouTube channel. 

do you like the smell of gasoline?: *shifty eyes at Rae’s reply* So I’m the person who were looking for because I like the smell of gasoline. 

what was the last movie you saw?: I recall that I rewatched Encanto with friends, but that wasn’t the most recent movie I’ve seen. There was also me rewatching Kate on Netflix, which I really recommend!! That only tells me that the actual last movie wasn’t exactly the best then. 

what’s the worst injury you’ve ever had?: I’m not 100% big on sharing medical stuff on here but I had the busted ankle and messed up wrist. I had cracked opened my skull as a kid and needed stitches. But that wasn’t the worst I had. 

do you have any obsessions right now?: Gaming wise, my current focus is on Pokemon: Legends of Arceus and rekindling my love of Miitopia. Watching wise, I am starting Peaky Blinders and Hometown Cha-cha-cha (please guys watch this, I love it so much). I am also finishing Disenchantment. There are much more to the list, but I’m only thinking off the top of my head.  IRL wise? Finding a new job--.

Pokemon MatchUp !

Good day Miss Madam Ma’am Jo! Hope life is treating you well !

So, in honor of the Sinnoh remakes, I wanted to finally settle down and get a clear idea on - of all/most PKMN platforms and men, who is best fit for me <3

You may already remember some of the stuff? But just in case ! I’m 18+, she/her, preferenced towards male. Short wavy brown hair, hazel eyes (mostly green and gold), and everything else physical such as height and whatnot falls in the ‘average’ category. <3

● I pride myself on always trying to be as selfless, or outward looking and considerate, as possible. (and also being a little bit coffee obsessed xD) ● I am what friends dome “switzerland” because I don’t take sides in arguments (partly due to a hatred and fear of confrontation) but also because I want to be fair in the assessment and seeing *all* sides, then I try to offer informed advice to defuse the situation.  ● People typically comment often on my "soft-spoken" voice, and how it reflects my very sweet and friendly personality. ● I don’t get angry *unless* it involves someone hurting my friends or loved ones by any capacity. ● A few negatives would be I’m a procrastinator, tend to isolate myself when I’m in pain or feeling down, and that have pretty low self-confidence and self-image tendencies.

Taking your general story into account, I think you’d go well with Morty!

Since you’re from Johto and traveled that region first, there’d be plenty of opportunities for the two of you to meet young and grow closer; he’s a pretty mellow guy when it comes to daily life, so you’d have no trouble initially getting to know each other. Having grown up with Eusine as well, Morty knows how to get along with all kinds of people.

I think Morty would be a good counterbalance to your more passive personality. While he’s very kind and pretty quiet in his own right, he’s also very dedicated to the things he believes are important, and that includes taking care of yourself as well. As the two of you get to know each other over the years, he definitely notices how you tend to avoid conflict when situations arise— a bit ironic for a trainer on the gym challenge, he admits— and he just can’t stand seeing people walk all over you. Thankfully Morty is a pretty tactful man; if you’re clearly not comfortable with establishing your own boundaries yet, he’s willing to shut down people who are taking advantage of your kindness.

He actually really appreciates the fact that you always want to look at every possible angle to a problem; Morty has devoted himself to studying, but since he’s been doing it for so long, he’s gotten used to reading the old texts in the same way over and over, leaving him unable to find new interpretations when his current ones fail. You’re methodical and systematic about pullin problems apart at the seams— your different outlook on everything refreshes his studies and helps him make new progress for the first time in what feels like ages.

Morty is the type to pointedly express his emotions without outright stating them. The two of you more than likely began as just casual friends on your initial journey— you’re bold to bring a grass type when his entire gym uses the Gastly line, and it amuses him, especially when you overcome weaknesses and earn his badge anyways. Similar personalities and shared interests eventually have him falling for you, and whenever you’re home on break from your travels, he’s excited to spend time with you again— you’re basically going on dates without either of you calling them that, because he doesn’t want to bring it up first if you’re not comfortable. He’s happy waiting for you as long as needed.

Hi! Just discovered your blog and your answers are a treat! XD just wanted to ask: Why does mewtwo always wants to make everyone forget the situations he is in (mostly bad) apparently? Happy easter!

Hi @thedragonmissionary! I’m so glad you enjoy my answers, it makes my day to hear that. :) Thank you so much for the holiday wishes, and I hope you had a wonderful Easter. 

As for your question, I’m willing to bet that the practical, real-world reason Mewtwo makes everyone forget the situations he’s in is because it relieves the Pokemon franchise from having to keep continuity with Ash’s encounters with Mewtwo. The endings of Mewtwo Strikes Back/Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution and Mewtwo Returns could make for a thorny continuity issue with the rest of the anime. If Ash learns the lesson that all life is precious, would he start to have misgivings about battling Pokemon when the sport can cause so much pain? Having met Mewtwo, would there be any repercussions for Ash the next time he faces off against Team Rocket? If Mewtwo didn’t make Giovanni forget him at the end of Mewtwo Returns, would Gio still be obsessed with finding him? How would that affect Team Rocket's goals? Does Ash dying have any lasting impact on him? Etc. While I personally would love to see these kinds of scenarios play out, I also understand that it makes creating a coherent continuity that lines up with the release of the games, merchandise, etc., very tricky for such a multi-faceted and enormous international company like The Pokemon Company.

But creatively, that’s no fun. In-universe, I think there’s a way to spin it to make sense with Mewtwo’s character arc and personality. Wiping the memories of those involved with him is a way for Mewtwo to 1) spare his victims from some trauma, 2) ensure his safety and secrecy, and 3) spare himself some guilt. 

1. Wiping everyone’s minds is a way to spare Ash the memory of having been killed/turned to stone, Nurse Joy from any lingering memories of having been kidnapped, brainwashed and enslaved, the trainers’ Pokemon from having fought a death battle against their brethren, and otherwise remove all other traumas that befell those involved in the New Island incident. In this way, I think inducing amnesia in his victims is seen by Mewtwo as a small act of mercy.

2. Making people forget him also ensures Mewtwo and his clones’ safety. If nobody remembers you, they can’t come after you, right? Ash may have turned out to be a good human, but Mewtwo may not be able to count on the other trainers to keep his and his clones’ identities a secret. Mewtwo wisely wipes the minds of Giovanni and the other Team Rocket agents on Mt. Quena, a nonviolent way to ensure that his worst enemy will not come after him or his clones again. 

3. And finally--and this is really getting into headcanon territory--I think Mewtwo makes everyone forget him because it allows him to save face and lessens his guilt. You can’t screw up if nobody remembers you screwed up, amirite? As you’ve noted, Mewtwo tends to wipe people’s memories when a situation goes bad. On New Island, Mewtwo is proven completely wrong by a human child--the progeny of his sworn enemy, humanity--when Ash sacrifices his own life to stop the fighting. Well, they can’t remember how much the strongest Pokemon in the world screwed up if he wipes their minds! And perhaps Mewtwo can sleep at night knowing that he “fixed” his mistake. 

Then after the events on Mt. Quena, Mewtwo prepares to wipe the minds of everyone--his own clones included. He argues that this is for the safety of the clones and the healing spring...but in doing so, it’s implied that he’s going to make the clones forget what they are and where they come from. Perhaps Mewtwo feels guilty having made them, committing the same sin he feels his creators did when they made him? Maybe he feels guilty for having put his clones through so much misery, that they’d be better off not remembering him or where they’re from? (Maybe all of the above?) Wiping their minds would spare them some difficult memories, and it would lessen the guilt that Mewtwo feels for putting them through so much.

Then Meowth and Brock make a good point.

Meowth: “It’s only natural to wonder about who and where you came from, and someday these little ones are going to want some answers. Only there won’t be any… Not if you’re going to make everybody forget! So what if their parents were clones? They’re all living creatures. They deserve to live, and they deserve to know about themselves just as much as you or me or anybody does.”

Brock: “And just forgetting things doesn’t change the fact that they happened.”

I think it’s here that Mewtwo realizes he’s been wrong to feel ashamed and guilty, and that he’s been projecting that shame and guilt onto his clones. None of them should feel ashamed for being “unnatural” beings, and wiping everyone’s minds of what’s happened doesn’t “fix” anything. There’s nothing to fix; only to learn from.

Mewtwo: “If we are to look to the future as other Pokemon do, we must also be able to look to the past. The shame of that past is not ours. It belongs to those who used our past to set us apart.”

Ironically, Mewtwo is one of those individuals who used their past to set them apart from others. I take this quote as Mewtwo realizing that any guilt he has over his past is for him and him alone to bear, and the past is something to be learned from, not run from. 

And there you have it. I think the way Mewtwo handles wiping minds goes hand-in-hand with how his character changes and grows. I’m curious to know how often Mewtwo uses the mindwipe trick after the events of Mewtwo Returns. I’d think he’d use it mostly for safety and privacy reasons as opposed to the other reasons I’ve laid out now that he’s on his own. What’s your story behind all the things that you like? What I mean is how were you introduced to all the things you find enjoyment out of (video games, anime fanfics etc). How’d you find quote on quote “geek culture” or how did it find you?

The majority of what I enjoy was via introduction by my older sister, or a friend. (This includes music. Nova is always exposing me to new stuff and giving me culture) Or. The old fashioned way, TV. Lol I survived off morning cartoons and cereal. In short, sister, friends, cartoons, fanfics, and CONVENTIONS.

My older sister had played KH1 up to the Deep jungle and then she quit. It was maybe 2004 at the time. But I remembered it well enough, that when my friend showed me KH2 lent his copy that I’m like. Ah hell yeah, I kinda remember this? (KH2 was the first I played, never even saw anything after Deep Jungle until I played KH1 later. But honestly KH2 pretty much gives you a recap, CoM exempt so it was fine. Sora didnt remember, so.. we were on the same page. Lol)

Same thing with Zelda. My first exposure was Majora’s mask, watching my sister play. (She wouldn’t let me play.Older sibling complex.) My first game was Twilight Princess, love that game, it’s beautiful and amazing. Dont @ me lol

Miraculous Ladybug was on Netflix, and I had seen @philsterman01 ’s comic dubs so I was like, yeah, I can finally watch it. (It wasnt what i expected AT ALL, but I still frickin love that cornball of a show. It’s ridiculous and cute.)

Sailor Moon was a huge part of my life, and I still adore it, my First OC was based off that and Tokyo Mew Mew.

Toonami was a huge thing way back when. Yu Yu Hakusho, Cyborg 009, Dragonball/DBZ, a liiiiittle Naruto. There was Fox Kids with Digimon, Shaman King, Winx Club, KidsWB had Yugioh, Pokemon, Cardcaptors, etc. (Adult swim had Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Scry-ed)

A lot of what I enjoyed actually starts at the library. I would ride my bike to the library and check out the limit of Manga and DvDs, I’d read them all and return them the next week and do it all over again… the internet was still foreign to me. Lol

My library didn’t really carry the “POPULAR” manga series, I got stuff like Iron Wok Jan, Skip Beat!, CLAMP stuff (to this day I still don’t understand Clover), Maison Ikkoku, Angelic Layer, but they still had like Fruits Basket, Bleach, Death Note, Chrono Crusade, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, etc. Anime was Rurouni Kenshin, X (1999), Tenchi Universe, Ranma ½, Vampire Hunter D, a lot of arbitrary anime I can’t remember but they were weeeeird.

When I was 13 I got a GaiaOnline account, and a FFNet, where I actually met my best friend and current roommate. (We bonded over our love for Hiei.) Lots of new stuff was introduced there.

A coworker of my Mom’s from a past job lended me Trigun, Raxephon, Fullmetal Panic, Generator Gawl, Arc the Lad, Kiddy Grade, Noir.

My mental library is pretty small all things considered. And I’m definitely more of a Casual Geek. I enjoy things in passing.

I think Kingdom Hearts is the thing I’ve held onto the longest, besides Yu Yu Hakusho and Cardcaptor Sakura. But I definitely love it the most.

And Miraculous Ladybug is sticking with me pretty strongly atm too. (But we’ll see. It’s still young)

I missed out on an lot of stuff in high school because I decided to ignore anime and instead get obsessed with Japanese and Korean Pop stars, of which I still need to get rid of my posters 💦💦💦 (they’re just… sitting in the closet lmao) and I was like… a YouTube nut. (I was absorbed into stuff like NigaHiga, Smosh, Mystery Guitar Man, Tobuscus, SMPfilms, Chonny, Bubsbeauty, Shimmycocopuffs, Equals3, stuff like that. Also the time I drew the LEAST and my art stagnated BAD)

It’s p small and it has lots of art I can actually appreciate on the walls and it’s got a low ceiling and kind of a comforting, dark-but-still-sunny den kind of vibe. The booths are actually comfortable. A lot of wood and smokey colours. There’s a slate fireplace crackling somewhere. It smells strongly of coffee and vaguely of liquorice. There’s a spot at the back that’s mostly hidden from site, the perfect place to curl up and read a book while picking on a muffin that was reasonably cheap but the size of your whole hand. Closest place to heaven on earth.

40.what was your biggest fear as a kid? is it the same today?

Not being able to breathe. Pretty much, ya.

OKAY SO. Ria is absolutely OBSESSED with her ball, and I mean OBSESSED to the point where she has no idea what to do with herself if you take it away and gets all anxious and whines and paces till you give it back. She constantly sheds and she does this sUpER CuTe thing where she wraps her front paw around your leg while you’re trying to walk and trips you. :))) Granger is either made of metal or a deflated pool toy and there’s no in between. She eats literally anything, including ants nests bc you know they must taste GREAT. She’s super stubborn. She gets smile wrinkles if you rub her neck. Maudie was rescue we got as a really small puppy. We only knew her mum but her dad must have been a Pomeranian bc she looks almost exactly like one. She has this thing where she bites you when you surprise her but really she’s a sweetheart. She’s mostly blind and deaf and has no idea where she is most of the time, I don’t think. XD The chickens are all idiots, the ducks are scared of me but still eat out of my hand when I offer them grapes. Haymitch likes to jump up on my back, Effie likes falling asleep on my lap, and Cinna pecks me a lot and leaves bruises but she lets me stroke her at night when she’s dozing off. :’)

Cutie Reviews: Tokyo Treat May 18

Ahhhh, I took a bit longer than I would have liked to. But with good reason.

Sorta.

Basically, I spent the past few days going through all of the old crates to sort the items and dispose of the boxes/crates. They take up a lot of space when you order so many, and I bought some cute little boxes to sort the items by type and take them to my room.

I still have some to go through, but I made a lot of progress. I think I threw away about 20 boxes. But I did keep a handful of them either because I had use for them, or someone I know did. It’s actually been kind of fun going through them :3 and oddly therapeutic.

I'm putting this here because the image of this is the very first one in the post. You can see it on the right-hand side there. Anyway, this is a drink by Minute Maid, a very popular juice brand that I like x3 It combines the sweet, flowery tastes of cherry and peach- I think this would perfect for spring time!

If you like Peach then you'd like this drink, basically. The Peach is overwhelmingly strong, and there is a faint cherry-ness to it, but it mostly blends into the peach. It was refreshing~

Sriracha Rice Chips & Don Taro Udon Snack

First up we got some delicious looking Sriracha chips made from brown rice and soy beans. As you can see on the bag in the pic. These are gluten free and flavored with a spicy kick! Perfect for those intense scenes; or when you start feeling yourself getting tired and need a wake-me-up.

Although, there was one little problem with mine...

Seeing this nice, big clean slice in the bag had me worried a teensy-bit. It came like that out of the box and it wasn't tampered with as far as I know- so I can only assume it was a last-second manufacturing thing that went unnoticed. It happens.They seemed fine, so I just put them in another bag.

Besides a tiny bit of staleness they tasted really good x3 They had a "deep crunch" to them, being sorta soft (which was either staleness or due to being made out of bean and rice) but still crispy. Oddly they reminded me of chicken-flavored ramen.

They are spicy, but it has to build up. It sort of lingers on the tongue for a few minutes but otherwise you won't notice it just eating a couple. It wasn’t really hot though for being made with sriracha. But I really like eating it so maybe I just didn’t notice?

Our next item in the pic is a snacking noodle dagashi, flavored after a real udon bowl.

Honestly they tasted a lot like those chips did. Minus the rice-bean texture. They're not bad or anything, but I'm not super-obsessed with snacking noodles; or noodles as a whole. I have to be in the mood for them. But they didn't taste bad, as I said, and if you really like crunchy snacks (or ramen) you would probably like these.

MENTAIKO UMAIBO & SENZU BEAN EDAMAME

Oh, our usual Umaibo and share pack snacks! How I love and sometimes detest you~

Depending on the flavors that is.

Our Umaibo is one I've had, maybe two other times by now. Mentaiko is "salted, creamy pollock roe", or fish eggs if you're not familiar with the term.

Not being a fish person, I've never tried fish eggs before. They haven't appealed to me. So I can't say if this tastes accurately or not- to me it reminds me of their cheese-flavored ones. I’m not a big fan of this, but it’s not bad either. It's not as strange to me as it originally was the first time I tried it.

Now, I've already given my opinions of these "share packs" so I won't waste time doing it again. For this month we get packs of this edamame themed snack with a light flavoring on them. First of all, each bag is 64 calories, making this a nice snack for those who worry over their weight or just want something a little healthier.

Apparently chosen to represent the "Senzou Bean" from Dragonball. Each bag also has a cute design, made to look like a mesh bag or pouch filled with edamame!

If they reminded me of anything on smell alone, I'd say "cheez-its and some green vegetable". Their taste and texture is about the same too, but I do get an edamame vibe. I think its adorable how they look like them too x3 and they have a light saltiness to them that is pleasant.

Besides the snacking noodles, I’d say these were the top in crunchiness.

DRAGON BALL CHEESE PUFFS

You read that right: Dragonball Cheese Puffs. These are 91.9 calories for the bag, and include a fun card as part of a game series. I know they've made these, but I'm used to seeing the gummy ones; but because I only buy those types, it was neat to try another kind.

So... as you can see, I got Vegeta! He's my favorite x3 I can't ever use the card for its intended purpose- but I'm happy regardless.

They're basically like any other cheese puff-based snack. However, the flavoring was actually very light on the cheese and tasted more like the corn its made out of. But it didn't taste bad, and the crispy texture is nice. These are good as long as you're not expecting a huge, cheesy flavor.

ALMOND TOFU CHOCOBI & CHOCOPIE

I think I'll swap things around and start with the Chocobi; it hasn't been in the box for a while. This time, rather than a fruit it's flavored after a specific dish: Almond Tofu, a smooth and healthy Japanese dessert. I've never tried it before but I assume it's like yogurt or pudding with a jelly texture.

The box is 139.4 calories, and was made in celebration of yet-another Crayon Shin-chan movie. This one features stickers from different regions in Japan, the one I got says Aichi. But to be honest, the only one of these I recognized was Hokkaido. I kinda wish I got that one~

As usual Chocobi as a texture is pretty nice. It's crispy, and they come in such a cute shape!

However... as usual, they also go stale VERY quickly.... So I've never been a fan of them.

Now these, the flavor isn't as odd as past ones I received. It's kind of like sweet, very light coconut, maybe a tiny bit almond x vanilla-ish. I really like almonds and tofu, but I didn't come to this snack knowing what to expect so I can’t say I’m being picky.

Our other item here I was a lot more excited for, meanwhile. The Petite Chocopie by LOTTE! It's basically chocolate covered cake and marshmallow cream- but since when has that ever been a bad thing??

Per each cake/pie its 74 calories, which isn't that bad if you want something sweet. According to the back they also have a type that features a chocolate drizzle rather than coating, and has chocolate and marshmallow cream inside~

Right off, if you don't like dark chocolate then you probably won't like these. I don't think they're made with it, but they certainly tasted like it. My mom thought so too, and she hates dark chocolate- which is a shame because I really like it. But at least I know it'll be safe from her ;3

These were pretty good, but I did have one complaint. As you can see in the picture I took they don't really sync up with the photo on the package. Which is common, I know, but what the actual item lacks in thickness it also lacks in taste unfortunately. With the rich chocolate and cake/cookies under it, the marshmallow cream is too thin- you barely taste it, if at all.

SHIN-CHAN GUMMY, SPLATOON GUMMIES, AND THOMAS THE TRAIN CHEWY CANDY

This single piece of Shin-chan Gummy is available in soda/ramune, and cola flavors. As much as I enjoy soda/ramune, I really, REALLY wish I got cola. Or maybe one of each. The image in the booklet is a tiny bit misleading because you only get 1.

I kinda had to leave it in the package because by the time I got to it (a week ago, just about) it had like... melted into the plastic. At least I assume. I tried to remove it and it was not coming. I took the picture, then I mangled it to get as much as I could out.

I LOVED how this tasted. Exactly like the soda/ramune flavor I like. However, I couldn't necessarily judge the quality of the gummy due to unforeseen issues. As noted above...

The next item I got was another one I was excited for cus who doesn't love Splatoon, am I right?

I only have the first game for now, but I'll be getting the Switch VERY SOON, so I'm excited to get the second on x3 I also have a cute pink water-filled squid I got from the toy store like a year or so ago.

Anyway, these gummies are available in Orange and Melon. There's also a very rare gummy shaped like an octopus that can be found in certain bags. Mine wasn't one of them. One bag is 155 calories, which is kind of lame due to how small it is. BUT at the same time, I've seen worse.

Not only are the gummies really cute, but they taste very good too. I was also happy to see that the bag is zip-lock style and they lasted for 4 months with no sign of aging!

I was so excited when I got them back in May that I couldn't resist trying them then (=´3`=)

The gummy texture... I can’t really describe. It's chewy, but not hard, and they don't take five minutes to eat either. More like a few seconds.

Our last item in this picture is the Thomas the Tank Engine Chewy Candy!

The inner-child in me was really excited to see this. Not only because the candy itself sounded good, but I grew up on the Thomas the Tank Engine stop-motion cartoons x3 Ironically, now that I'm older he seems a lot more popular. That or I just never noticed it before. There's also another sense of irony here though. Back in August, I was re-watching the super old original stop-motions I grew up on; not for any real reason, I was just bored and like the background noise.

Okay, so anyway the candy is a grape chewy candy by Lotte. It looks a lot like gum but it's kind of thicker, and what's fun is that each piece has a little puzzle on it, or you can fold the wrapper in certain ways to make shapes or "toys". Each stick, or the whole pack is 85 calories. I can't actually tell.

It pretty much tastes exactly like grape hi-chew, the only difference is the texture. So if you like Hi-chew or grape candy you'd like this. If you don't then... you probably won't.

BORUTO GUMMY & BORUTO PINEAPPLE JELLIES

Our last items of the box are these two "Boruto" snacks! Boruto, if you never heard of the series is essentially a sequel to "Naruto". A series I was very fond of. However, I don't like Boruto. It's not because of the characters or anything, but because of some "decisions" they made I just didn't agree with. Besides the cute packaging and decorative detail on the bag, the jellies each feature a decorative lid design based on various Boruto characters. Each Jelly is 19 calories, and are pineapple flavored, with real pineapple juice!

This box was essentially full of nostalgia for me x3 when I was younger I loved eating little jellies. They became pretty scarce as I got older though, and one day they kind of just stopped showing up. It's a bit disappointing.

They taste really good, it's not an overwhelming Pineapple flavor. I love the slippery, soft, squishy texture~

Our final item is this Boruto energy-drink flavored Hand Gummy :3 Hand Gummies are popular and fun, being based on the game Rock-Paper-Scissors. I've gotten one or two other gummies like this before, but if I recall they were much smaller- but I got scissors both times, including this one!

That's usually my go-to gesture and always has been ;D But you can also look at is as "peace sign" too if you wanted. Anyway, these are energy-drink flavored, but the booklet assures us that no energy drink ingredients were actually used in making this. It's simply BASED on a fizzy, sweet-and-sour pineapple energy drink.

That rested any concerns I had, because I'm one of those who people who avoids energy drinks at all cost. If I want energy I'll just eat sugar.

It pretty much tastes like the jelly, but the flavor was stronger. I also really liked its super-soft texture x3

Quality - 4 out of 5. The only real reason why I marked it down was because of that slice in the rice chips bag. I'm sure this was an extremely rare thing though, I usually don't have any problems with any of the items I get in this box.  

Content - 3 out of 5. I didn't hate anything at all this time around- which is almost as rare as the above mention. Usually I find one item I detest, and I pretty much only disliked one item, and even then it wasn't that bad...

Theme - 5 out of 5. Besides a couple of items, it was pretty much covered in anime stuff!

Total Rank: 12 out of 15 Cuties. I genuinely LOVED this box in comparison to the April box. It had a couple of faults but nothing serious that I couldn't overlook. Considering how excited I was for this, I feel like they could have done better- but they did really good! Maybe like a... B+

1. Cherry x Peach Drink - It was so refreshing~

2. Splatoon Gummies - I can't say I prefer orange or melon flavors in comparison to ramune, grape, or cola- but they tasted so good and looked adorable!

3. Thomas Grape Chewy Candy - Loved. Loved. Loved!

4. Hand Gummy - I liked this just a little bit better than the jelly. It's very soft and chewy, I'd recommend these if you can find them, they come in many flavors.

5. Pineapple Jellies - I loved their soft, wiggly-jiggly texture~

6. Chocopie -  I loved the soft, cakey texture and its dark chocolate-esque taste~

7. Rice Chips - Delicious!

8. Shin-chan Gummy - I was disappointed with this because it was delicious! I just wish it hadn't stuck to its packaging. Well, that and I wish we got maybe one or two more~

9. Edamame snack - They tasted good but I just liked other stuff better.

10. Dragonball Cheese Puffs - I liked how they tasted, but I felt like it might have been a tiny bit misleading cause it didn't taste like cheese to me. I don't know if its because the information in the booklet was wrong, or... I’m very happy with the card I got though!

12. Udon Snacking Noodles - As I mentioned, these I have to be in the mood for. They don't taste bad but it's not something I'd probably reach for.

Aaa im so full of poke hype and lovv! <3

I feel like maybe doodling my kid self, for some reason?? Like embrace the nostalg and also show some love to that awkward lil kid who didnt really know who they were yet. Its interesting how much i've changed over the years!

Hell i might even draw personas of myself dressed as all the protags from all the different generations? But they'd be mostly the same for like the first 20 years, just me getting real tall and fat lol. I had almost floor length hair for SO LONG it felt really freeing to chop it all off and i never went back! I think i kept it cos it was loke.. Camoflage? The only 'girly' thing i had so i could pretend to myself that i was straight and cis. Plus a literal shield cos i could be 90% hair and just one eye poking out XD So yeah it'd be funny looking at me over time, its just this girly-looking kid getting increasingly more macho outfits and increasingly more girly hair and increasingly more socially anxious, until within the space of 18-25 i suddenly have this giant self discovery freedom explosion and change completely! Its funny how if anything i look less masculine now? Like im way more comfortable with the fact that i'm someone in between genders, and its not a binary of having to be something i'm not just to escape some other thing i'm not. Its also kinda funny how these gender roles felt so restrictive when i was crammed into one of them, yet dressing with both at once seems just as freeing as having neither. Tho still no matter how i dress i always get misgendered one way or another since non-binary acceptance is still far from the norm. But still im so much more me than i've ever been before, and its great to look back so i can realize how far i've come!

So lol maybe i'll just draw old kid me playing "her" first pokemon game, and leave out the next decade and a half of the same thing but taller. And i could just draw current me in a few different attempts at a pokemon outfit? Like when i did my sprite edits i just did me in my usual outfit i wear IRL, now im thinking maybe i shoulda designed a wish fullfillment ideal gym leader costume or something? Tho im too lazy to start the sprite edit project all over again with this new design lol. Oh and maybe also draw my pokemon go outfit? I dont wear it all the time but i had a fun lil look i wore the other day that i ended up laughing at cos i accidentalky wore all blue even tho i picked Team Valor! Now i wanna wear it all the time lol. Oo and maybe cosplay as my fave characters? If i cant afford to do it IRL i can at least draw it!

So yeh in summary somehow i feel really confident in my identity today and i wanna draw pics of me. Mild ego time!!! Or rather just wishing i could fly back in time and motivate my kid self by showing them that they woukd actually have the freedom to be themself some day. I dont even really think of it as "I used to be a girl" but just that i was always feeling this way and didnt know the words for it, or that other people felt the same way and it wasnt an 'abomination against god'. And for some reason playing a gane with selectable genders really helped me let out some of my feelings during that confused childhood of absolute repression. "I just pick a random gender each time cos it doesnt really matter right? Doesnt everyone just pick the one with the outfit they'd rather wear?" I absolutely knew that was a lame excuse and none of these other kids actually felt that way, but at least it kept people from suspecting i had queer reasons for my queer actions. In a time where i didnt even know what queer meant except that it was Somehow Bad. Gah, this is why sex education needs to be inclusive! Even when i was old enough to learn about straight sex i apparantly wasnt old enough to learn about gay and trans people! Let alone asexuality lol... Man it was a whole nother mess to be dealing with an anomolous lack of sexual attraction at the same time as i was repressing something everyone told me was 'inherantly too dirty for teenagers to know about'. For so long i was just told that crossdressing was 'a sick fetish men have for wearing women's underwear' not just.. A woman is a woman and is telling you she's a woman and you wont listen to her. And for some reason they always obsessed with MTF trans folk in these sensationalist hate sermons, i guess because 'a man who gets off on dressing like a woman' just sounds like the more disgusting version when youre a sexist homophobic transphobic piece of shit throwing your bigotry at children. And at the same time also aphobic and telling me i need surgery on my genitals if i dont want sex. Mannnn kids those days.. i really hope kids these days have it better! I hope everyone who dealt with that shit managed to find love and support eventually, even if its still a damn crime they had it denied to them during their most important childhood years. The whole concept of 'an innocent carefree childhood' is so unknown to me, its ironic people claim they want to keep "lgbt politics" away from children in order to preserve that innocent childhood...

Aaaaanyway im rambling lol! In summary pokemon was one of my only coping methods during that childhood and the only small way i could pretend someone accepted me. Even if it was just by whispering no when the professor said 'are you a boy or a girl' and being happy at the little genderless mons like magnemite or the legendaries. I dont think i would have ever realized it was actually POSSIBLE and had words for the complex dysphoria i was feeling, if i hadnt played this dumb lil series of games.

Anyway thats probably also why i never had any attatchment to gen 1 despite being born right as the first wave of pokemania was coming out. The memories i have of those times are complex. Im just excited to revisit kanto as a new and happy person and maybe make new memories! I already barely remembered actual Yellow compared to FRLG, it was kind of a trip to play it on virtual console and remember all the tiny bits of sexist writing that games used to have during that era. It was like 'whoa i never noticed this was wrong as a kid, this finally explains why it made me uncomfortable!' Also the gameplay was glitchy and the plot nonexistant and the translation rudimentary and limited. And the mons weren't very good and i prefer pretty much every other generation and especially Garbodor and Vanillite, dammit!

So yeah like i said im happy that Let's Go has managed to make me hype even thougj i didnt enjoy kanto the first time around! And its good how much it represents my journey out of that shitty childhood so now i can revisit it and pretend this is my first time and None Of That Happened, Thanks

The Top 5 Games We Played in 2019

What is life without fun? Few things are as fun as getting truly lost in a game you love. As we close out 2019, it’s time to look back on the games that dominated our free time. This year, we have top five (or almost five) lists from Joel Hruska, David Cardinal, Michael Justin Allen Sexton, and Ryan Whitwam. Our picks skew newer, but not everything we’ve been obsessed with is from the last year. These are just the games we’ve enjoyed the most in 2019.

Red Dead Redemption 2

As a primarily PC gamer, I was never able to play the original Red Dead Redemption, but Rockstar saw fit to make port the sequel to PC. The game suffered from a rocky launch on PC, and not all the bugs have been ironed out, but it’s still one of the most engaging gaming experiences I’ve had in recent memory. The world is detailed and rich with content, and not just repetitive fetch quests like some games that tout the size of their maps. The storytelling and voice acting are also absolutely top notch. Traveling to distant waypoints in many games is tedious, but the journey is part of the fun in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Pokemon Sword and Shield

Pokemon occupies a unique place gaming culture as a franchise that became a worldwide phenomenon without any full console releases. Pokemon Sword and Shield broke with tradition when they launched on the Nintendo Switch. They still have many of the same problems as older Pokemon games like clunky menus, confusing online features, and bad writing. That’s not why people play Pokemon games, though. It’s about catching ’em all, and Pokemon Sword and Shield do that better than any previous games in the series. In addition to the game’s linear routes between cities, there’s a vast Wild Area to explore. The raid battle mechanics are also a nice addition. You can waste truly obscene amounts of time searching for your favorite mons in these games.

Untitled Goose Game

Who would have thought a goose could be the bane of an entire town? But that’s what you become in Untitled Goose Game. The game presents you with a to-do list and turns you loose on the unsuspecting people of this unnamed hamlet. Some items on the list are simple — steal the gardener’s rake and put it in the lake. Others will take more planning and thought, like the quest to make someone put on the wrong glasses. This game speaks to some sort of casual maliciousness we all have when playing games, and it’s incredibly engaging. You will become the goose, and as you walk away from your vanquished foes, honking and flapping your wings, you feel almost unreasonably powerful.

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds is basically a smaller, quirkier Fallout in space. As a refugee from a stranded transport ship, you have to make your way in the libertarian fantasy that is the Halcyon solar system. You can either support the mega-corporations that dominate the colony or fight to change things. Along the way, you’ll assemble a crew of misfits with their own backstories to explore across the Halcyon system. The settings are fun to explore, and the voice acting is surprisingly good. I will be the first to admit The Outer Worlds isn’t a perfect game; it’s too short, and there’s not enough variation in gear. Still, it’s still one of the best things I played this year.

MechWarrior 5

I love giant fighting robots, and MechWarrior is the premiere giant fighting robot franchise. However, we went almost 20 years without a proper single player MechWarrior game. That finally changed a few weeks ago with the release of MechWarrior 5. You play as the leader of a mercenary group, traveling the stars in search of money and revenge at the controls of heavily armed mechs. The combat in this game is superb — the dozens of included mechs have unique characteristics, weapon loadouts, and roles. These war machines feel heavy and powerful, and it’s an absolute delight to blast other mechs as you fulfill a contract. The game does have some problems with a meandering storyline, and the voice acting is barely passable. I’m willing to forgive that in light of the incredible combat, though.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

Mutant Year Zero is one of my favorite games that I’ve played this year. It’s not really a full AAA title in scope — think of it as more of a “AA” game, bigger than an indie, but smaller than what a large studio would build. The game is built on the same engine used for the newer version of XCOM, but it allows free-moving exploration in ways XCOM isn’t known for. It’s not perfect — there are definitely a few rough spots — but it feels like a Fallout title (and includes a few easter eggs referencing that game).

World of Warcraft Classic

I haven’t had nearly as much time to play WoW Classic as I’d like, but I’ve definitely had tons of fun with it. Bringing back Blizzard’s iconic World of Warcraft proved to be a popular choice for the company. The mode has been more popular than Blizzard anticipated, though it’s not clear how many players are brand-new to the title versus those coming back to relieve the glory days.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

Don’t look at me that way. I never had access to a console growing up, which means I’ve had a lot of first-time fun with some of the old console games. Yoshi’s Island is a truly amazing game for it’s era, with gorgeous artwork and great level design.

  It was designed to be a more ‘accessible’ platform, and I’m willing to admit I need that kind of feature, having basically never played platformers as a kid. I die. A lot. The restore button is going to break off the NES Classic long before any other component. I may not be very good at the game, but I’ve certainly had a lot of fun with it.

Sadly, I’m only in for three titles  — I’ve scarcely done enough gaming to talk about it, outside of the above. One of the ironies of writing about the topic is that it’s hard to find the time to actually do it, and life had other plans for Christmas this year. I had planned to write an article about No Mans Sky, which I recently bought, but I’ve only been able to spend an hour with the title thus far.

I got my first taste of the Koei Tecmo’s Nobunaga’s Ambition game franchise roughly twenty years ago on the SNES. Afterwards I fell out of touch with the series but recently have got back into these wonderful strategy games with Nobunaga’s Ambition: Spheres of Influence and Nobunaga’s Ambition Taishi. Though both games provide an enjoyable experience as you fight to conquer the Japanese isles, Taishi has options to automate some of the more tedious aspects of the game and makes the later stages of the game significantly more enjoyable than in Sphere’s of Influence. Though it’s not what I’d call perfect, it’s currently my favorite strategy game that I feel any fan of the genre will enjoy.

Jade Empire

Jade Empire is sent in a fictional world roughly based Chinese history and culture with Buddhist elements influencing the game’s story.  The game also features its own artificial language that was created by a linguist explicitly for use in the game. Released in 2005, I first played this game when I was 14, and it helped to grow my interest in Asia. It’s by far my favorite game of all time, and I make it a point to replay this game at least once every year. Though my hopes for a sequel have yet to be answered, if you’ve never tried the game before its well worth giving it a try.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy

This is another game that I first played years ago on the original Xbox. Set in ancient Egypt, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is predominantly a puzzle game with some fighting and RPG elements mixed in. I got back into this game this year after discovering that THQ Nordic had released a remastered version of the game with improved graphics. Though the gameplay remains unchanged from the original, it holds up well it’s still fun to play. There is also a fan based mod in the works which includes content cut from the original game.

Fable III

When Lionhead studios launched the original Fable, it instantly became one of the best RPG games in the world. Later games in the series changed drastically and mixed reviews. Though the games were fun, they were also disappointing because of the extent to which they changed. Fable III has never been able to stand up to the original Fable, but trying the game again after a few years I found this game to still be fun to play and an enjoyable experience.

StarCraft 2

StarCraft 2 needs little introduction. Since its release StarCraft 2 has been a crowd favorite with the online multiplayer gaming community. The game also has a long and highly enjoyable campaign that also has plenty of replay value. Though I don’t play online much, I often return to run through the campaign, which is why I opted to include it in my list of top five games for the year.

Untitled Goose Game

This game comes pretty close to qualifying as the ultimate un-video-game — at least compared to most current hits. You can’t get killed. At most you suffer from a couple momentary ruffled feathers. There is no time pressure, unless you complete the entire game and decide to try and set speed records. Graphics are trivial and cartoon-like — but artfully thought out. It is fun, addictive, and can be played by anyone. You only need a couple buttons and a joystick, along with a sense of humor.

The plot is simple. You’re an annoying goose who spends your day harassing the unlucky denizens of a nearby village. When in doubt honking is sure to get a start out of them, and help you distract them. There are dozens of tasks you get to try to accomplish, ranging from breaking things to befuddling shopkeepers. Watching and kibitzing can be almost as fun as playing, so don’t hesitate to fire it up when the whole family is around.

F1 2019

For some reason lost in history, our family follows F1 racing. Despite the relative lack of passing or on-track action, we’re addicted. So it is great to be able to “follow along” with the season by playing the F1 games for each season. This year in particular, the game came out part way through the season, so it was possible to drive the same tracks that the racers would that weekend. There are extensive team and career modes, but they’re wasted on me, as I don’t have the attention span for them. But experimenting by driving different cars and different setups adds to the enjoyment of the race season.

Forza Motorsport 7

If it wasn’t for the F1 connection, I’d rate Motorsports 7 as a no-brainer winner over F1, and it definitely has the best AIs of any version of Motorsports. I really enjoy the versatility of the game, with a huge selection of cars, tracks, and race series. It is certainly not anything like iRacing when it comes to racing fidelity and true competitive racing, but the graphics are much more detailed, and I don’t participate in multi-player racing (other than with Avatars) anyway. I also play Assetto Corsa and Project CARS, but Motorsports is my go to if I just want to spend some time on track.

Dirt Rally

The most stressful video game experience ever for me was driving a mountain course in Dirt Rally in VR using my Oculus. I can imagine driving a NASCAR around an oval at full speed (as lethal as that might prove to be), but I can’t imagine driving at high speed on a dirt track hugging a cliff. So for the most part I stick with the forest tracks in Dirt Rally, but I love the combination of needing to drive the car and interpret the messages about the upcoming hills and turns from my rally co-driver.

Ultimate General: Civil War

This is another game where the campaign modes are wasted on me. But the detailed, and carefully-modeled, tactical engagements and multi-day battle strategies are great fun for a reformed hex board gamer like me. And unlike with tabletop versions of military campaigns, I can play this one against the computer any time I want. Like many games of its genre, it doesn’t get updated much, and some elements of it are behind the times, but it looks great on my 4K 32-inch photo monitor.

Bonjour guys,

I’ve had the most formidable (as the French say), chill summer. We hosted many special and dear friends and family that we ended up staying in Paris all summer. I started a new venture called Mon Ami Paree walking tours and this weekend we are hopping on a train for our 17th wedding anniversary. It’s completely bananas to me that I have done anything for as long as seventeen years but I’ve been with lovely Antz for half of my life so I consider myself lucky. I’ve been thinking about how I am getting closer to the midpoint of my life (fifty is creeping on me) and all the things I’ve learned, failed and grown from. Here’s my list of real talk life advice that have shaped me thus far.

Don’t pick at your face. I am so old school in my skin regime that I still use toothpaste on my pimples and I never touch my face. Now that I live in a city without a car, I feel the dirt and sun more than ever. So, everyday I wash my face with Bliss fab foaming 2-in-1 cleanser & exfoliator with bamboo buffers  (I bought a huge bottle before we left LA) and moisturize with my Holy Grail Aveeno Positively Radiant Sheer Daily Moisturizing Lotion. That’s it! I try my best not to frown but I am embracing my laugh-line wrinkles.

Manners first in everyday situations. When I was 11, I spent a summer in Oklahoma with my Grandmother’s sister. My Great-Aunt was super traditionally strict and she basically put me in charm school boot camp that summer. No elbows on the table, ask to be excused from the table and always say Good morning when you greet someone. These are no-brainer rules for Liv, lucky me I rarely have to remind her but it’s such a dying part of our society. Bring a gift the first time you visit someone’s house, hold the door for people struggling, make eye contact when you speak to someone. So many people have a hard time learning names but I always say the person’s name when we meet to remember it. I also write myself notes to remind myself (cute family we met at the park with two kids and live in the 2eme). Please learn a strong handshake. When I meet someone with a weak handshake I want to head bump them so hard. How far will you get in life with that weak grip? I don’t trust weak hand shakers. I often have to catch myself from saying “Bless you” out loud when someone sneezes on the bus because I get such strange looks (I forget, no one speaks English). One of the most charming things I appreciate here in Paris is you must always speak to a shopkeeper or bus driver when you enter. I also love how people offer their seats to elderly or pregnant women without a thought. From my observations, pregnant ladies get treated like princesses here. Remember, politeness goes a long way and shows integrity.

Always bring a umbrella! I have learned the hard way so many times since I moved to this land of unpredictable rain. I have gotten caught in rain and hailstorms without even a jacket. I am so LA that I forget to wear a jacket when I leave the house and the sun is shining bright. Little did I know it can take less than an hour for the weather to take a major turn. We have acquired so many cheap umbrellas because we get caught in the rain. Now we carry a bag every time we go out with two small umbrellas, a pack of wet wipes, portable phone charger and cords, hand sanitizer, our table tennis rackets (almost every park has a table) and a water bottle. These things used to live in the trunk of my car but now I have to schlep everything myself.

Invest in quality lip balm. I used to throw Vaseline on my lips if they were chapped for years in my twenties. Then I got an Anthropologie gift card for my birthday so I bought some fancy Smith Rosebud Salve. I loved the smell of the balm but the container would get bent in my bag and it was too cumbersome and messy to open. So when I found EOS in sweet mint at Target, I was addicted. I literally brought 20 of them to Paris with me because I fear running out. My Mom even sends me more in my care packages because she knows I am obsessed. Find a quality lip balm and never leave home without it in your purse. Trust me, I had to stop at a 24 hour grocery store to buy some lip balm while I was on my way to the hospital when I was in labor with Liv.

My Mommy keeps me stocked with LA necessities.

Don’t buy something with the hope of losing weight to wear it later. I bought a cute baby doll dress from Target thinking, it’s so cute and not expensive, I’ll lose some weight in my arms and be able to wear it in a few months. That dumb dress sat in my closet for five years. Why mentally psyche yourself up for something you can’t enjoy now? I no longer starve myself, or beat myself up about my weight. I am healthy and loved. I walk more now than I ever did and I feel great in my clothes. The apparel industry has come around to accepting that all women aren’t size six, so I feel great about being able to buy clothes that don’t look matronly or feel left out of what the cool girls are wearing. I was even asked to try-on clothes for two brands I adore (my darlings at Ace & Jigand Ban.do)  This 42 year old lady is still as rad as I was at 22!

Embrace your quirky self! I used to have an unhealthy relationship with my hair. I have bleached it to death, chemically straightened it for years and mistreated it out of sheer laziness. The straw that broke my hair unhappiness was in January 2017. I was putting a chemical straightener on my hair when I had to take off my Olivia pendant necklace (the chemicals would ruin it)  I somehow lost my necklace that day so I vowed to never use that stupid (and damaging) stuff again. I haven’t put any chemicals or color on my hair since then. I replaced my necklace too. When I want to change my look, I get colorful braids. Now that I live in a more humid climate (my hair literally turns into a mushroom the second I go outside)

I’ve learned to embrace my natural curls. I have an established hair routine that I do once in a while because I’m still lazy but the less I mess with my hair the stronger and healthier it’s been. I bought products I know keep my dry, damaged hair moisturized and leave it alone. I broke my expensive flat iron when I first moved her because of the dumb voltage. I bought a new Euro flat iron but it doesn’t work as well as my old one so I decided, why go through the time and energy trying to make my curly hair straight? Now I throw tons of leave-in conditioner in my hair, or sometimes I wear flexi rods overnight and poof! I’m little orphan Lizzie.

I’ve retired my signature braids for the summer to give my hair a rest and let it breathe. Braids are a protective hairstyle in the Black hair community but they can also cause breakage if you use the wrong type of hair or have them braided too tight. Plus they are annoyingly hot.

Please for the love of God know the difference between homophones (words that sound the same but are spelled and mean different things!) I am in a Facebook travel group and when I see adult people typing “I waisted a ticket because the whether was bad,” I have a brain meltdown. Listen, I am no grammar snob, I am completely aware my spelling is atrocious (thanks autocorrect for fixing that for me) and I am a serial run-on-sentence writer, but if you aren’t sure (NOT SHORE) which word to use, take a second and Google it. It took me years to grasp the difference between stationary and stationery. I subscribe to Word Genius which emails me a new word a day. I really wish I had a reason to use the word hornswoggle on my blog. Learn new things all the time.

Master your penmanship. I may sound so old-fashioned and prissy in my unsolicited advice but have you ever tried to read a doctor’s prescription? I now live in a country where they write in lovely italic cursive however, I can’t tell an S from an R. Liv has beautiful penmanship, I have always instilled taking pride in your handwriting in her from an early age yet the French education system has taken over and she writes so teeny tiny, I can’t figure it out. I bought her a calligraphy set and she loves to practice writing fancy.

Not everyone is going to like you. Believe it or not this is hard for extroverts like myself to accept. I can be hypersensitive and get anxiety around new people. I am an only child so my friendships are everything to me. I have been told that I am a people person but I really have a small inner circle of only about five or six people who really know the real uncensored me. I’ve had to deal with people flaking on me, people mischaracterizing me and many people doubting me for years. My confidence comes from learning self-trust. I am okay being the loud girl who listens to weird music or dresses like a toddler obsessed with rainbows, that is who I am, not sorry about it. I can’t help but be selfish about my happiness. I try my best to set an example for my (sometimes shy and quiet) daughter because growing up is hard and things like bullying, eating disorders and now the fake Instagram perfection standard makes it even harder. I never had a sibling to give me advice or tell me I look crazy so I’ve made great friends and spent time listening and learning. I now have many sisters (by marriage and my bff) but I wish I knew at 13 that just because someone didn’t like me meant something was wrong with me. As you get older, you stop caring what other people think. What they think doesn’t matter and are inconsequential to your success!

Fail, ugly cry and then try that shit again until you succeed! OMG, this was a hard lesson for me to learn y’all. I am impatient and when I don’t immediately get my way, I turn into the biggest brat ever. I have gone through every type of disappointment, felt like life was over for me and through all the drama and heartache, always came through better than I started. It’s weird when you are going through something serious, it feels like being stuck in quicksand. I now know that the harder something is for me to achieve, the more it’s worth it. I also know that anything worth doing requires sacrifice and commitment. You may sacrifice sleep, spending money, eating desserts but will it be worth the sacrifice in the end? Ask yourself this when going into a new venture. I have learned in the past twenty two years that my internal stress and anxiety is a complete overreaction. I know deep down things will work out because it always seems impossible until it’s done. The word is literally I’M POSSIBLE!!

Have a lovely rest of the summer. I am still working on last summer’s travel posts, it’s taking forever because my laptop memory is full so for every photo I upload I have to throw away three. It’s moving slow but it’s possible.

Cutie Reviews: Tokyo Treat November 17

Hello! Welcome to another review :3 This one was kind of put off for a few days unintentionally as usual. I have not been having a good weekend. I spent the first half of it in the emergency room and being bed ridden, My broken T-key was giving me grief and being a pain until I managed to fix it, and I cut my finger on the grater and it took off a good layer of skin and hurts like crazy... 

This months theme is... Flavorful Thanksgiving Feast!

Okay so like usual I forgot to take pics of the items obtained in the Lucky Treat box for the month. I don’t know why that keeps happening lately but here’s a list instead:

The special featured of the booklet details the special event known as Shichi-Go-San, celebrating Children the ages of 3, 5, and 7. As well as the best locations to admire Autumn foliage in Japan. The prize items for the month were Dr. Slump and Dragonball themed.

Before I get to the contents I wanted to mention that I noticed something in the booklet changed. The once “mysterious“ Dagashi Mix section now reveals what you get! This would have normally bugged me, but I never look in the book until after I see what I got, so I can still avoid spoilers~

Alrighty, so these are our misc items of the crate: The drink, the DIY candy, the mystery toy or charm or accessory. I plan on covering the DIY candy next, but for now let’s focus on our cute drink and accessory item~

Our Drink is the delicious looking Kirin Chocolate Mint Milk Tea. I believe we had milk tea by this brand before, and it was pretty good last time so I had high hopes; especially since I ♥ anything mint-chocolate!

Ironically, while I don’t like milk or tea, I’ve been enjoying milk tea as of late. I especially love this Kirin brand, with their eye-catching and fun designs. The flavor was light, and it made me think of a sugar-free melted chocolate ice cream with mint flavoring. I really liked it- but I do wish it was stronger in taste.

Besides, the drink we also got this cute Gudetama Magnet, based on various egg dishes. I got this before in a prior box, but that one was animal themed :3 I really like sushi, so the one I got was perfect!

It’s not a food, but is is Gudetama. I love mystery/blind bag items like this too and I love finding them in the Tokyo Treat box. It’s fairly common and I appreciate it since it’s a lot more rare in the other ones.

These are two of the Regular items in the booklet, including some Super Light Rice Crackers, the Wagashi item for the month made from White Rice found in Niigata. They are light and airy with a melting texture, and are flavored with a mixture of soy sauce and ginger.

They’re also gluten free, but 240 calories as a whole. I’m not really complaining though ;3 sometimes we need to indulge.

These are very yummy, and while I could taste a little bit of the ginger and soy sauce, the flavor combination also reminded of chili oil, minus the spice. The rice didn’t really have an identifiable taste, but that is a bit common with rice-based snacks. With these, we have the Sapporo Multi-veggie Sticks by Calbee. These fun little sticks boasts usage of SEVEN vegetables Σ(･口･) Including red pepper, pumpkin, spinach, carrot, red beet... and I’m guessing potato, tomato, and/or onion. Neither lists really go into detail about all seven. They’re a total of 116 calories. Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ Usually I like vegetable-themed chips or snacks. As much as I’m not a huge fan of vegetables themselves. I also generally like this brand; but I’m not a big fan of this particular blend. At first they weren’t so bad, they tasted like a plain potato. But now they kind of taste yucky O x < ‘ The plus side is, I do know that you can actually make a potato dish using stuff like this and a few other ingredients. A youtuber I like tried it out once so I might see if there’s something I can do with these.

Well you know what they say, Chocolate makes everything better! And here we got some fun looking chocolate~♥

In order we have Choco Flakes Crisp Balls - Kinako, Kinako is a roasted soy flour that can be found on various sweets, mainly during Autumn/Fall to add a bit of a sweet and nutty flavor. Choco Flakes is a crisped cereal coated in flavored chocolate, and 267 calories!

Kinako is also what I keep claiming my Squishies smell like. If they don’t smell like rubber, this is that exact scent. I don’t know how, and I don’t know why- but it is.

These are very tasty x3 That’s really all I have to say about them though. I really enjoyed them, although I was perturbed by the large Calorie amount...

Speaking of high calories, we also get some Double Fromage Pocky! Premium or “special pocky“, which is pretty much just a smaller pocky with 3.2x more chocolate, both whipped and milk. Fromage meanwhile, is basically a fancy word for cheese, and the stick itself is chocolate, giving it a delicious and elegant twist.

Each stick is 120 cal. Something else I like is that you get three, individually wrapped packs in this box. Perfect for keeping them fresh, or gifting to someone special~

The stick itself is pretty plain (but that is common with pocky), but the thick layer of coating blends in with it wonderfully and totally redeems it. It kind of reminded me of cookies and cream, with a hint of sweet cheese-flavor.

Lastly is this big, eye-catching Giant Chocolate Snack! This crazy looking stick is bigger then a drink bottle- and it comes in a colorful, cool looking wrapper!

Despite it’s size it is very light and airy feeling, and apparently made from peanut and corn puffs and is very light in texture. Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥

It didn’t taste bad at all, but it’s not really my sort of thing. Like texture wise it was really nice, but when I ate it I noticed it was really bitter tasting, and not in a good way like dark chocolate.

Keeping with the sweets theme, we have two pink candies, including a twisty Twisted Marshmallow that was available in a variety of colors- but tasted like plain marshmallow no matter which type you got.

I’m obsessed with marshmallows! This was ultra-soft and stretchy and squishy, I couldn’t help but play with it before eating it~

The other item is something I’ve had before in two other flavors (Soda and Fruit blend), but seeing this vibrant pink tube got me veeeeeeery excited! This is the brand new Strawberry Ramune by Morinaga.

I’ve been a big fan of these cute bottle candies since I tried my first one, and this flavor didn’t disappoint. It tastes like any other Japanese strawberry candy, and the container is a great way to keep them protected- and it looks adorable~

You know, I almost feel like this crate was catered for me this month- Strawberry candies, mint-chocolate milk tea, a yummy rice snack, and now TWO cola candies?!

We have a Cola Gummy, as well as these Vending Machine Cola Gummies ♥ Two similar, but very different gummy candies.

The Cola Gummy is a decently sized gummy covered in sugar for a total of only 39 calories. As you can see in the picture, it’s wider and bigger then the biggest gummy in the vending machine pack!

Ratings: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 

The cola gummy is pretty tasty at first, it reminded me of my favorite cola gummies, or the chupa chups cola lollipops. But days later when I finished it, I noticed the flavor remained for about five seconds- then started to taste a little gross. So it’s perfectly fine if you eat it within the time span of opening it!

I also don’t like that was it really hard DX it reminded me of those soft jelly gummies, but it did not match in texture.

Meanwhile, the vending machine set says it is 73 calories PER gummy, or pack. I can’t really tell. It’s by a brand I’ve seen before who made some other cola candies I haven’t been able to find myself.

I really like the fun design inspiration for this pack ♥ You have cans, drinking bottles, large cans, and larger drink bottles. The flavors also vary like most cola candies, in that the yellow/clear part is usually pineapple or lemon flavored, while the brown is cola. and I noticed they are still really soft and taste good a week or two after opening them.

Ironically, while this set is more fun and held up a lot better then the other one, I think the flavor for the other gummy (before it went south) was better.

Of course you can’t celebrate the last bit of Fall/Autumn without including some fun sweet potato snacks. Calbee returns with these Osatsu Snacks, made from steamed and baked Anno sweet potato. This is a special flavor, in that you can only get it during the cold seasons.

(Fun bit of Trivia, Osatsu celebrated their 35th anniversary last year!)

These fun, scallop-looking chips are light and crispy, and they essentially just tasted like regular potato chips with a touch of sweetness. They were pretty nice.

I know, you’re all probably observing that strange jelly looking stuff right? You’re not the only ones, I was perplexed by the Baked Sweet Potato Yokan too.

A Yokan is a jelly-like snack usually made from red beans and often included chestnuts. I noticed it seems to be a lot more “common“ during cooler seasons, and I’ve also seen potato variations such as this, and purple. The snack has a jelly texture, but consistency of beans.

It’s... unique. I’ll put it like that. It’s not bad though, it tastes like a buttery potato and is really, really sweet. In terms of personal opinion I’m sort of in the middle with it, I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it. It’s unusual, but it was fun to try!

(I was actually tempted to see if I could melt this down and put it on bread, just to see what it was like. . . . but I decided against it when I thought it would have disgraced the efforts someone put into making it. I know I’m weird.)

Of course, despite how good a box is, there’s always one or two snacks that leave you feeling like “they’re okay...“ or “ew!“. That’s part of the experience though :3

The first one is a Yakisoba Sauce Snack composed of small puffs (rice or barley I assume), and snacking noodle pieces.

I’m not a bit Yakisoba fan, I’ll admit that now. The packaging is adorable, and if you like stuff like this you get a big amount of it in the little bag (it’s like the smaller the bag, the fuller it is, am I right?). I liked the little puffs, but in general the flavor was too strong for me and I didn’t really like it.

I did have someone who did though, so it made a nice surprise snack for them later.

This other snack fared a little better, not because I like squid- but some squid things aren’t terrible and I try to give them a chance. This is a bag of SQUID CRACKERS!

This is a savory, fried snack- and I know that probably sounds like heaven right now. Well in comparison to other squid snacks I tried and disliked, it kind of was. The texture was sort of a mix between crispy and crunchy, and while I ate it with no problem, I wasn’t too crazy about the underlying squidiness/sea food flavor I was picking up.

I will say that it’s on the lighter side though, so if you’re a fan of those flavors it might be too light. For me personally it was just enough.

We’re down to our final two items of the November crate :D We have Mild Roast flavor Pretz featuring a character I’ve seen before but I’m not familiar really with. I see him and his friends on a lot of stuff, but it’s not a series I‘m familiar with.

Each stick or pack in total is 114 calories.

These are really good. What I enjoy about Pretz is that they are essentially a savory/alternate pocky. They’re crispy but a light snack, and there’s tons of flavor varieties.

These taste like a plain pretz stick (which is already hard for me to describe) with a light buttered taste, like snacking crackers. After everything else in the crate I tried though, it was a welcoming addition.

As usual we also get a monthly Umaibo, this time the flavor was Cheese! Rarely do I ever find an Umaibo I dislike, and of course this was no exception. I mean come on, it’s CHEESE flavored ;3

Now I can’t say I loved it more then the corn potage flavor, because that one is the ultimate champion of Umaibo. But it was definitely in the top 10! It tasted like most other crispy, airy cheese puffed snack I’ve eaten.

Quality - 4 out of 5. I don’t think I had anything bad to remark upon this time, and for the price paid I believe it was fair. The box was fine, and I loved the adorable bonus item.

Content - 4 out of 5. It wasn’t perfect, but I really enjoyed it. We got a nice blend of sweet and savory, which I prefer and find more enjoyable then just one type of thing.

Theme - 4 out of 5. Most of the stuff definitely made me think of Fall/Autumn. I can’t say I thought of Thanksgiving, although the potato stuff did kind of remind me of the Holiday. I know they could have done even more to make the theme better.

Total Rank: 12 out of 15 Cuties. I’m not sure if I preferred this box to any in particular. It was definitely good, maybe even great- but I know they could have also made it a little bit better in terms of theme- although I don’t think it was necessary. I fairly enjoyed everything the two things I wasn’t in love with still scored decently.

1. Rice Crackers - The best snack in the entire box x3 I LOVED these!

2. Chocolate Mint Milk Tea -  I wish the flavor was stronger, but it was still really tasty. I love the cool f

3. Choco Flakes - Yummy :P

4. Fromage Pocky - Fancy and tasty!

5. Cola Gummy - I hated the rough texture >x< but the flavor was better then the other one when I first opened it.

6. Vending Machine Cola Gummies - These were good, I loved the design/motif and details. But in terms of flavoring, the other candy was just a little better... 

7. Strawberry Ramune Candy - I love strawberry-anything!

8. Osatsu Snack - These were tasty, but the flavoring was a little light in them. I didn’t hate them at all though, sometimes you need the light sweetness to balance out all the stronger flavors.

9. Twisted Marshmallow - Same as below, again. Delicious and kawaii, but nothing different. I adore marshmallows though so I’m not really complaining.

10. Cheese Umaibo - Same as below, it was delicious but nothing new or exciting. 

11. Mild Roast Pretz - I actually really liked these :3 but they were fairly plain in comparison to the rest of the items. 

12. Giant Chocolate Snack -  It wasn’t bad either, It just wasn’t my thing you know? I don’t like peanuts much and it wasn’t the type of bitter I enjoy. 

13. Sweet Potato Yokan - I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it. It was sweet and buttery.  

14. Squid Crackers - Meh. They weren’t bad honestly.

15. Veggie Sticks - They weren’t bad, but they were kind of bland in my opinion...

16. Yakisoba Sauce Snack - I’m sorry, I just don’t like it!

Alrighty, we’ve come to the end of another Cutie Review. I hope it was okay, and I apologize to anyone who might have actually been waiting for this. I still have 2 November boxes I need to cover before I can move on to December- but I plan to hurry up and do the DIY candy review first since it won’t take nearly as long to do.
