Clean your Home Without Dying
Fancy store-bought chemical cleaning products didn’t hit the shelves until the 40s. Before then, people were cleaning their homes with basic & highly effective ingredients that you probably have in your kitchen.
Why should you start using those clean ingredients instead? Fun Fact: The Poison Control Hotline was a direct response to chemical cleaning products becoming widely available. Basically, store-bought chemical cleaning products are toxic, bad for your body, and dangerous to have in the house if you have small children. Not to mention, those single-use spray bottles are expensive and wasteful! But don't worry, there's a better way.
The Good Stuff
White vinegar is a fantastic multipurpose cleaner, great for mild disinfecting, removing gunk, and cleaning dirty surfaces! And best of all, its gentle on humans and animals. You can even drink it.
Baking soda is amazing for absorbing smells, like removing weird fridge smells and deodorizing old furniture and carpets. Sprinkle it on a surface, let it sit for a few hours (or a few days, depending on how powerful the smell is). Don't forgo using soap to clean up the bulk of the mess first, though!
Soap straight up. Dove, Ivory, Mrs. Meyer’s, Dr. Bronner, or just that basic as heck bar-soap you can make yourself. Relatively safe to eat (although I wouldn't recommend it) and you can use it on your body as just as well as your dishes.
Less Safe But Frankly Invaluable
Lighter fluid removes sticky residue leagues better than anything else, although it is not safe to ingest, and obviously, flammable.
Pet Odor Eliminator with enzymes gets rid of pee or vomit smells or basically anything else gross your pet might do indoors. It is honestly essential if you are a pet owner, because getting rid of the lingering smell is the best way to make sure (for example) your dog won't pee on the couch over and over again. I haven't found any DIY alternative for this, but non-toxic stuff like Paw Sense is solid as heck.
Primary Uses & Combos
As a general rule: Vinegar + soap = ineffective Vinegar + baking soda = GREAT Soap + baking soda = Just fine
Dishes
Bar soap will take care of mild mess, and a paste of baking soda and water will remove grease or oil. Normal soap will leave a residue on your dishes, so rinse with a mix of water and vinegar to get everything squeaky clean.
(Note: Don't use vinegar in your dishwasher, it cleans your dishes but damages the rubber parts of the machinery.)
Counters, tables, and other surfaces
Mix a solution of 1 part White Vinegar and 3 parts water in a spray bottle, it does an greate job! It isn't strong enough to truly disinfect, but using true disinfectants in your home isn't healthy, anyway.
If you don't like the smell, don't worry, it dissipates completely when it dries.
Non-porous Floors (linoleum, ceramic tile, etc)
1 part White Vinegar and 3 parts water with a mop will do a great job.
Porous Floors (hardwood, stone, etc)
Mix a small amount of pure soap in water, spray it on, and mop it up! You'll want to do another round with just water to remove any soapy residue, and one last pass with any recommended treatment for maintaining your floor.
Toilet
Mix 1 part baking soda with 4 parts vinegar. Mix it with your toilet brush, let it sit for 15 minutes, then SCRUB and flush!
Mold and Mildew
Soak the surface in 100% vinegar and leave it for an hour. Scrub scrub scrub! If it's a vertical surface, mix baking soda with water so it forms a paste, and let it sit for an hour. Then wash with vinegar and SCRUB!
Clothes
You can use white vinegar in your laundry! It will brighten whites, but may fade colors on certain fabrics, so use caution. Do not mix vinegar with laundry detergent, though! They cancel each other out because of their pH, so stick to one or the other.
What have I missed? I probably missed stuff. Send me a message with questions and I'll update!
Storing your new cleaning potions and mixtures
Chances are, you've been using store-bought stuff for quite a while, and I'll bet you've got a bunch of spray bottles under your kitchen sink. This is excellent, because we can reuse all of them!
For bottles with tops that come off easily
Unscrew those puppies, rinse them out about 10 times. (Don't forget to rinse the inside of the spray mechanism by spraying vinegar and clean water through it a whole bunch!)
For bottles with tops that are locked on
These are a challenge, but we can do it. Most of these locking mechanisms are made by angled plastic teeth inside the cap. They're angled in such a way that the cap can be screwed on, but not off again. I used this method specifically to hack a Swiffer Wet-Jet, which had a nasty cap. The hack goes like this:
Dunk the cap in boiling water for 1 minute.
Wear oven mits to protect your hands from the heat, and twist it HARD.
Find the little teeth inside the cap, and use a nail-clipper to clip them off.
Once you've made the cap friendly, wash the bottle out real good, and fill it with your stuff!
Removing labels so you can make your own
Peel off the labels and then use lighter fluid to get rid of the sticky residue.
To label them yourself, you can do something as simple as writing on the bottle with a sharpie marker, or make something cute and fancy.
For a paper label, cut out a piece of paper that fits nicely on the bottle. Decorate the paper however you want! When you're finished, use Mod Podge or a similar glue to attach it permanently on the bottle. Paint the back of the paper with the glue, and stick it on the surface. To waterproof the label, paint the front of the paper with glue as well (as long as you are using a glue that dries clear).
Now, I'm gonna be totally straight with you, I DO use 1 totally unsafe store-bought cleaning product: motherfreakin Foaming Bleach Bathroom Cleaner. Here's why. I have really old bathroom & kitchen sinks in my apartment that get yellow and gross in 0.5 seconds, and bleach is the only thing I've been able to find that turns them white again. To me, the nasty stuff is worth it because of how much less stress I have over yellow-y sinks.
So my takeaway is: replace the products you can, that you feel good about, that don't create additional stress in your life. The best thing you can do for your home and the environment is keep yourself feeling good and strong about the efforts you're making so you can keep on making them. Now, go obliterate some gunk!!!!
Love, Milo

How to get slime out of carpet – Follow These Easy Steps
How to get slime out of carpet
The most efficient way on how to get slime out of carpet is to put it in a bag. I used mine at a local grocery store, as they don’t have any garbage disposal to collect the garbage that you leave sitting on their property. To put the slime into the bag, remove the old clothes you’re using (don’t worry about the old clothes – they’re still good). I took the same old bag and placed the bag into a garbage bag, but this time I took it out. I then put the bags in a plastic recycling can for the garbage to be collected, while you continue trying other methods. It is important to remember that the slime will stick to the plastic and that it takes a few seconds for it to work – you will need to let it sit on the plastic for a few seconds, but once it’s done doing its job, put it in your reusable bags for collection. If you don’t want to spend time in the garbage, but want to avoid the unpleasantness of leaving the bag on the front porch for several hours, put the bag in recycling can and collect the sludge in that bag.”
Quick steps to remove slime are as follows:
Carefully Scrape Away Any Excess Slime
Clean Slime with Hydrogen Peroxide
Clean the Slime Stain with Liquid Dish Soap
Step by Step Guide on How to Get Slime Out of Carpet
Step 1: Remove All Your Slime from Carpet
Step 2: Rinse the Carpet In Soap
Step 3: Use a small amount of a Cleaner On the Carpet (You can use regular soap or any other clean cleaning product if you feel better about using regular soap, keep in mind that the Cleaners will make the carpets cleaner)
Step 4: After the Cleaner is dry, Apply a Low Impact Application
How to Get Slime Out of Carpet
Step 1: Remove all the slime off carpets that have come out of their moulds
Step 2: Rinse the Carpet In Soap.
Step 3: Use a Medium-To Heavy Duty Detergent and Apply A High Impact Application
Step 4: Apply an Apply Cleaner, Use It to Apply an Apply a Light Spray.
Step 5: Rinse and Repeat until all the slime has been removed from the carpet with your cleaning product applied
Clean the slime with Liquid Dish Soap
For the lime slime, mix up the vinegar solution, and then wipe a small portion of the solution down with paper towels with a damp cloth. If it’s too thick, let it dry on one sheet and then wipe it down again with the other wet towel.
Use an old spoon to rub some citrus limes all over
Then, rub the limes around the outside edge of the bucket.
Use a toothbrush to wipe any residual slime off of the lime and into a bucket with fresh water.
Once it’s cleaned, rinse the bucket with fresh water.
Tube the Lime Juice With Lemon Oil
To make up for any lime slime problem, add lemon juice instead of water.
Put a little bit of water into a glass.
Add half of a tablespoon of lemon juice or 1/2 cup of fresh lemon juice to the water and let the mixture soak for about 30 minutes.
Then, drain the contents of the bottle and mix the liquid in the bowl of a food processor.
Stiffening the Lime Juice
Now that you have a good lukewarm solution and lime juice to work with, it’s time to stiffen it up enough to use in recipes.
Fill 2-3 cups with cold filtered water (this is your lukewarm solution).
In another cup of water add 3 ounces of lemon juice, and let it sit in the fridge for at least half an hour.
Add the remaining 1/4 cup of lemon juice in the same place. Stir this mixture with your spoon to stiffen it. This mixture should form small droplets that look like the bubbles you see in a glass.
NOTE – After the carpet is thoroughly dried, you can use a sponge, or a paper towel, to clean out the rug from the floor. When the surface is clean, remove the carpet and scrub the carpet to remove all the dirt and impurities.
How to Clean Your Carpet with 3 Cleaning Agents
How to Clean Your Carpet by Using the 3 Cleaning Agents. The three cleaning agents above are:
1. TIN
This is a top-rated cleaner that has been used in homes for decades. If you have an old, faded, dirty or worn looking carpets, then this is a cleaner you need. Its a quick and easy to use, and easy to apply the method of cleaning your carpet.
2. WATER
WATER is an excellent choice for those who do not want to use the TIN cleaners. It has a very similar scent and cleaning properties to the other cleaners, which is very lovely in my opinion.
3. DEBROSILS
I use DEBROSILS for carpets from time to time because I think I need something to help restore my carpet’s natural appearance.
The difference between DEBROSILS and those other cleaners that have the “bitter” smell is that DEBROSILS is very much natural, non-toxic and gentle and are great for carpets with a lot of dirt and dust and spittle. DEBROSILS can be useful for some of these carpets.
Heavy-Duty Slime Cleaners for Carpets and Walls
The best-selling product in the world, L-PVA, is an excellent barrier and a good cleaner for carpets and walls. And now there are new ones that are made with it in mind. If you have the materials on hand, you can make your own, but here’s how it’s done.
Materials
Paint a thick, clean coat of L-PVA over a thick, opaque base coat. Paint the walls and carpets a lighter shade of L-PVA. Use the L-PVA coat to keep them from sticking to each other or the paint. Apply the more luminous paint to the carpets to help keep the seal between them and the coat.
Cleanup Method
The first thing you’ll want to clean up is the corners and the edges. You can apply a thin coat of L-PVA to the corners to help them hold together, or you can use a lighter paint like Red L-Peel to remove the excess paint and use a damp cloth, sponge or brush to wipe it down.
To clean the edges, you’ll need to apply a thick, clean layer of L-PVA over your edges before using a dry, gentle sponge or brush (I like to use a brush because I’m a sucker for those), followed by the damp cloth. You can then wipe it over the dry areas. Repeat with the corners and then the edges. You’ll need to let that dry for a bit, but by then you should have a nice smooth finish.
After that, you’d spray some L-PVA on the paint to make it adhere to the coat and give it some sheen.
You can also try applying a thin coat of L-PVA over your nails to make it cling to the nails. I prefer these so you can get an even tacky seal while they’re being applied instead of going through the hassle of painting them first.
How does it Clean?
To clean the L-PVA, take care not to touch it with your hands because that could damage it. Just brush it out with your hands, and then let it dry. It’ll take up to 2-3 hours to completely clean your walls and carpets.
When you do a dry clean, be sure to rinse it off of the surface with water just before applying the next coat of paint.
FAQs
What is carpet residue?
If you have carpet, then you know that when it gets to be a dry and rough area, some of it will slide off to the side, leaving behind a sticky or dirty substance called carpet residue, usually a mixture of old carpet and grass. As your floor matures, the dirt and other items left are removed from the bedding, which then has to be removed by hand with the assistance of a carpet scraper.
Will vinegar get slime out of the carpet?
Vinegar removes slime from carpet and clothes just fine. But as you’ve just learned, vinegar, which is made up of the alcohol by-product of vinegar making, and an alkaline pH, is not suitable for cleaning and deodorizing. A lot of that stuff (which is what is left over after vinegar is removed) will go to the bedding. You can sometimes see this as a bit of a “solution to vinegar,” since the dirt and other items left behind don’t need to be washed off with vinegar anyway since you can throw it in the dishwasher or dryer and toss again. It just doesn’t make sense.
What about other cleaning products?
You might be wondering why vinegar cleaning products are only available for cleaning furniture and mattresses. Well, these are the products that are made up of vinegar that have been heated at 150 degrees Celcius to kill bacteria, or to create a solution that will remove the slime without killing the carpet.
The pH of the vinegar that is used in your vinegar cleaning product will be different than the pH of the vinegar that you used to clean the carpet. If you use this vinegar on a mat, then the pH is lower in the vinegar you were using.
If you use the vinegar that was heated at 150C (in our vinegar-cleaning products), but the vinegar that used to be used (which will have the vinegar dissolved in it) is pH 8 and still has the original chemical properties to kill bacteria and clean carp, the pH will be a lot more neutral to begin with.
But the vinegar you are using should be at or above 7, or 10, or 15, as you would use for your carpet.
You can also use a dryer to heat your vinegar to the correct pH, but the more heating, the more you should try to get the pH as high as possible.
How to maintain general cleaning of carpet?
You could leave your house in the dark and put the carpet down, but there’s a small risk that the moisture may dry out the rug, leaving it sticky and unable to move. To prevent such a mistake, lay the carpet in a cool, dry place and set it aside for several hours or overnight. Once it dries out, gently clean the rug with an old toothbrush, toothpaste, or lint-free tissue paper, and wash it thoroughly. Then cover the carpet with a damp cloth, put the carpet away, and dry overnight.
Do You Need a Vacuum Sealer?
Although a vacuum cleaner and a hose can be handy in particular carpets, a vacuum-sealed rug and carpet can still be very messy and time-consuming. This is because the moisture on your carpet may start accumulating in an area that wasn’t sealed when you placed it, especially if there’s a hole or two in the carpet and your rug was already damp. If you decide to seal the space, you should also vacuum it thoroughly with the vacuum sealer. When all the moisture is removed, try to seal the vacuum sealer so that a thin film of liquid stays on the carpet and prevents it from drying out. Then clean the vacuum sealer thoroughly with water-based cleaners and a damp paper towel to get rid of any excess moisture. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the rug and carpet under running water before vacuuming them.
Do you want the slime to be able to pass through the carpet?
If slime passes through, then you probably do not need an extra scrubbing step. The carpet should be cleaned with the sponge to remove the impurities that would pass through the rug, and then the dust will be washed away in the sink.
If you would instead use a paper towel, follow this method.
How will I know if a rug is ready to be sanded?
You will need a sanding stick with a small bit of gravel, a sandpaper towel and a rag to hold sandpaper and a sanding wheel to sand. You will need to sand the rug with a sanding cloth or by hand or a rolling pin. For more details, click the following links for sanding sheets and sanding rugs, depending on the material you have.
How much sand is too much or how to get more?
For the best quality rug, you should try to sand every 1 inch (1 cm) on the rug at least 10 inches (25 cm) deep (or more). For smaller rugs, this should be 3-4 inches deep (5 cm). For larger rugs such as those found on the floor, you might need to sand at least 7-10 inches (17-24 cm) deep for better adhesion.
Sanding rugs can be sanded to remove any impurities and can be cleaned and dried before sanding is finished.
How to do a rug stain?
For the best quality rug, you should try to do a rug stain at least once a year. This means each carpet is cleaned and dried for about three months before washing to ensure that all the stains and impurities are removed.
You should also clean and dry the rug after it is finished in winter, spring and summer.

Step 2: Rinse the Carpet In Soap
Step 3: Use a small amount of a Cleaner On the Carpet (You can use regular soap or any other clean cleaning product if you feel better about using regular soap, keep in mind that the Cleaners will make the carpets cleaner)
Step 4: After the Cleaner is dry, Apply a Low Impact Application

Step 2: Rinse the Carpet In Soap
Step 3: Use a small amount of a Cleaner On the Carpet (You can use regular soap or any other clean cleaning product if you feel better about using regular soap, keep in mind that the Cleaners will make the carpets cleaner)

If slime passes through, then you probably do not need an extra scrubbing step. The carpet should be cleaned with the sponge to remove the impurities that would pass through the rug, and then the dust will be washed away in the sink.

Sanding rugs can be sanded to remove any impurities and can be cleaned and dried before sanding is finished.

Step 3: Use a small amount of a Cleaner On the Carpet (You can use regular soap or any other clean cleaning product if you feel better about using regular soap, keep in mind that the Cleaners will make the carpets cleaner)
Step 4: After the Cleaner is dry, Apply a Low Impact Application

How to Clean Your Carpet by Using the 3 Cleaning Agents. The three cleaning agents above are:
1. TIN

The first thing you’ll want to clean up is the corners and the edges. You can apply a thin coat of L-PVA to the corners to help them hold together, or you can use a lighter paint like Red L-Peel to remove the excess paint and use a damp cloth, sponge or brush to wipe it down.

When you do a dry clean, be sure to rinse it off of the surface with water just before applying the next coat of paint.

How to Remove Mold from Your Car
We will describe the risks of mold exposure and the importance of preventing mold growth, while also providing a step-by-step guide on how to remove mold from your car. If you’re unlucky enough to already have developed this major problem, don’t worry!
While it may seem like an insurmountable challenge, in fact with the right supplies and with some elbow grease you can restore your car to the safe, clean, comfortable vehicle you deserve.
I. What is mold, and Why is it Dangerous?
Mold is a type of fungus that typically forms in the presence of higher temperatures and high levels of moisture. Exposure to mold can cause major health issues, especially in those who are sensitive to it.
Those who are most susceptible to the effects of mold include those with lung diseases, allergy sufferers, and those with compromised immune systems (e.g. those receiving treatment for cancer, who have had an organ transplant, or who are taking immunosuppressive medications).
The presence of mold can lead to respiratory and skin irritation, lung infections, asthma, and other health challenges. Symptoms can include nasal congestion, wheezing, eye and skin irritation, fever, and shortness of breath. That’s why it’s extremely important to avoid exposing yourself to mold, especially somewhere you’re likely to spend as much time as your car. (And to make sure you never leave your car out in the open if the top is down!)
Luckily, if you notice mold—typically noticeable due to a strong odor, but also potentially visible patches of mold—there are steps you can take to fix the problem. Keep reading to learn how to protect yourself from mold in your automobile.
II. How to Remove Mold
There are, of course, numerous methods to eradicate mold from your car, and everyone will recommend something different. But here’s what we think is the best way to do it.
1. Protect yourself
Always make SURE that you are wearing a surgical face mask or particle mask as well as strong, non-porous household cleaning gloves (make sure they’re solid enough not to break). This will decrease the likelihood of harmful, excessive exposure to mold and its possible toxins.
2. Air out your car in a sunny spot
Sunlight and fresh air are pretty powerful tools in the fight against mold. Like virtually all types of fungi, mold grows in moist areas, so the combination of sun and fresh air dries things out and makes it impossible for mold to survive.
Ideally, on a clear day, move your car to a sunny parking spot and open up the doors and windows (and sunroof, if there is one). Give it a few hours and let any dampness dry out. (Just be sure to keep an eye on the weather—you’ll be giving yourself even more of a problem if a sudden shower appears and your car’s interior is exposed to the elements!)
3. Inspect your car
It’s a good idea to look all throughout your car to get a sense of where the mold is an issue, so you can focus on particular areas in the later steps. Make sure to look at the following: surface of the seats, underneath seats, steering wheel, floor, seat belts, and seat side seams.
Mold can vary in color, so just look for (typically circular) areas of black, green, white, gray, or brown. That’s how you’ll know where you need to focus your cleaning efforts.
4. Prepare before disinfecting
Try to break up patches of mold by gently brushing them with a toothbrush. Then, if you’re lucky enough to have access to one, use a wet-dry vacuum cleaner to vacuum up the mold you’ve just brushed up. (If you can’t get your hands on a wet-dry vacuum, that’s OK—this step is helpful but not essential).
5. Spray with disinfectant solutions
Take out your car’s seat covers and carpets. Before you wash them, you can use any of the following mixtures to kill mold in these sections of fabric:
4 parts white vinegar and 1 part water
1 quart of water, ½ cup of white vinegar, ¼ teaspoon of clove oil, and 1 tbsp of baking soda (note: avoid exposing skin directly to clove oil—it can cause dermatitis and irritate skin and mucous membranes)
Pour either of these mixtures into a spray bottle and spray it on your car’s seat covers and carpets. They should sit on the material for at least 20 minutes—or even longer—in order to ensure that the potent ingredients are able to fully kill the mold and prevent its regrowth.
You may also want to spray other parts of your car where mold has been able to infiltrate and cause odor (including as the dashboard, air vent, steering wheel, and seats).
Stains on the seats, seat covers, and carpets can be removed by sprinkling good old Borax powder on them (yes, it’s useful for so many purposes!), waiting at least 10 minutes, and then sweeping or vacuuming the powder away.
6. Remove the leftover residue
Once the mold has been killed, you can use a wet-dry vacuum to vacuum up the liquid solution. Otherwise, you can wait for the areas to dry and then use a regular vacuum to vacuum up the dried-up mold residue. If you use a regular vacuum, make sure you use one with a bag and then throw the bag away afterward. Otherwise, you’ll be spreading mold spores when you bring it inside to clean your home.
7. Wash your car’s seat covers and carpets
Now that you’ve thoroughly disinfected them, you can use standard detergent to wash your car’s seat covers and carpets. If possible, add Borax powder when you wash them and allow them to dry in the sun if it’s a sunny day (as we said, the sun is incredibly helpful for this process).
If for whatever reason you can’t wash them with detergent, an alternative is to spray them thoroughly (really all over, so that the mold spores are killed) with a solution of water and non-iodized salt. Then allow them to dry in the sun, and wait for the salt to form a crust on the surface, which you can brush or vacuum off.
Salt does a great job getting rid of mold—it dries it out thoroughly and kills it.
8. Optional: use an air freshener spray to remove leftover odors
If you’re bothered by the residual smell of vinegar (which will disappear as the liquid completely evaporates), you can use an air freshener spray to ensure everything smells fine.
Most important is to air everything out—that’s what will leave everything smelling good.
9. Replace the seat covers and carpets, and keep the mold from coming back
Once you’ve washed and dried the seat covers and carpets, it’s time to put them back in your car.
And here’s a key takeaway: since mold requires a wet environment to grow, you can prevent its return by ensuring your car is dry and that it remains totally dry. This is the most important part of preventing mold re-growth.
You can use a dehumidifier to lower the overall moisture levels in your car.
III. Best Car Air Fresheners
If, after cleaning, you decide you’d like to use an air freshener to ensure your car smells absolutely perfect, here are some of the best commercial products to use:
1. Moso Natural Air Purifying Bag
Here’s one all natural option—a linen bag full of pure bamboo charcoal! Activated charcoal is amazing for absorbing moisture and odor. In order to keep it functioning, all you have to do is leave it in the sun to dry (with all the moisture having been absorbed).
It lasts for two years, and then you can open up the bag and use the charcoal as fertilizer for plants. So it’s eco-friendly from start to finish, and won’t expose you to any toxic chemicals whatsoever.
2. Turtle Wax 50819 Power Out! Odor-X Kinetic Whole Car Blast
This is a high-powered canister deodorizer that “seeks and destroys odors at the molecular level”—and does so for up to a month. It can be used underneath seats, on the inside of air vents, and in carpet fibers.
It’s also a pretty great value.
Customer reviews report it’s incredibly effective and easy to use. Note that the initial smell of the product is strong, but the chemical smell will dissipate over time leaving no odor in its wake.
3. Ozium Smoke and Odor Eliminator Gel
This is a gel deodorizer that’s not designated specifically for cars, but also for home and office. It comes with a twist top that allows you to choose the level of odor control.
The product itself has a slight citrusy odor but nothing too strong. It’s a solid product that’s easy to use and very affordable.
4. Chemical Guys New Car Smell Premium Air Freshener and Odor Eliminator
Love the smell of a new car?
This product is engineered not only to eliminate odor from your vehicle but also to add that amazing new car smell (thankfully without the associated toxic chemicals that are part of the real new car smell).
It’s also so concentrated that it can be diluted with distilled water and still work.
And amazingly, all you need for your entire car is one spray.
5. Meguiar’s G2316 Odor Eliminator
Here’s another super-effective spray that gets high customer ratings. It’s a great choice for cars and trucks as well as in the home.
The effects are immediate with a spray as opposed to a gel (which works more gradually over time). That means use of this spray means pretty much instant odor elimination.
Nothing fancy, no frills—just a really effective product for odor removal.
Now you know that, as worrisome or even scary as the prospect of a mold-infested vehicle can be, there are options to address the problem. All it takes is some time and effort, with attention to safety (wear a mask and gloves!) and your vehicle can be good as new.
You can even use natural products like vinegar and clove oil solutions to do the work for you, if that’s a priority. And once you’re done, of course it’s important to keep your car dry, so that you don’t have to go through the trouble of cleaning out the mold again in the future.

The Ultimate Guide on How to Get Rid of Mildew Smell
If you have ever owned or rented a living space, chances are relatively high that you have encountered mildew smells. If you’ve ever had a basement before, these chances increase tenfold. Basements are perfect breeding grounds for mildew and mold—though all these fungi really need to thrive are dampness and darkness. Once mildew occurs, the resulting smell is often quite pungent. The musty, dense odor given off by mildew is well-known for its ability to seep into fabrics, upholstery, carpets, and more. Getting mildew odors out of these is often much more difficult than eliminating the spores themselves.
In fact, many choose to simply replace the affected areas rather than continue their attempts at cleaning and masking the odor. Thankfully, when it comes to getting rid of mildew smells, there are effective and safe options. This guide will take you through the basics of mildew, the health risks, home remedies, common mildew infestations, and the best products to eliminate each type of mildew smell.
What is Mildew?
Mold and mildew are often used interchangeably, though they are two different household ailments. While they both are types of fungi that can appear inside the home, mildew has a few specific characteristics: • Grows in a flat pattern • Powdery or downy in appearance • May appear white or yellow and turn darker with time Like mold, mildew thrives in damp, moist conditions. It can appear on any damp organic matter, which may include wood, wallpaper, drywall, fabric, and upholstery. During damp winter months, as snow and ice melts and reforms, homeowners stay comfortable by keeping heating units running.
With warmth running through the house and closed windows, damp surfaces can easily provide everything that mildew needs to survive. As soon as the summer arrives, humidity returns and mildew can continue to flourish. The most common areas of the home for mildew to grow are typically areas that see routine moisture. Thus, bathrooms, kitchens, and basements are prone to mildew and mold infestations. Left unchecked, mildew can damage anything it touches, typically upholstery, linens, or wallpaper. Mildew spores thrive by consuming the organic materials in these items, meaning that the structure is eventually broken down. For homeowners, mildew can cause some serious issues, and not just for structural reasons. The presence of mildew can even cause health issues, including various sicknesses and respiratory troubles. For those who have allergies and asthma, mildew spores and gasses can be particularly damaging, irritating and inflaming symptoms.
What Causes Mildew Smell?
It’s often not difficult to identify a mildew problem inside the home. This comes not only from the visual aspect but also from its distinctive scent. Mildew is associated with a pungent, lingering musty odor. The cause of mildew smell comes from a natural process of fungi growing and releasing gasses into the air. These gasses are what make eliminating mildew smells so tricky—the gasses easily permeate into linens, fabrics, and damp organic matter around the home. Once a mildew smell is noticed, the chances are that the mildew has already been growing for quite some time. As the mildew releases gasses, spores travel throughout the home, floating through the air and settling on other damp, dark surfaces.
Not only does this increase the mildew contamination, but traveling spores increase mildew smell, decreasing indoor air quality and making an unhealthy living environment.
Causes of Mildew Sickness
The presence of mold and mildew inside your home poses a significant health risk. Mildew sickness can be caused by direct contact with mildew spores on the skin, or through inhaling them as they travel throughout the air.
For those with skin sensitivities, touching mildew is likely to trigger an allergic reaction. For those with existing respiratory issues, like allergies or asthma, inhaling mildew spores can create serious side effects. Once mildew has been present for a long period of time, the gasses released by the mildew can become toxins, increasing the likelihood of poor health.
Symptoms of Mildew Sickness
Although mold and mildew are structurally different, when it comes to exposure symptoms, they share many of the same maladies. People who have been exposed to mildew spores are likely to experience the following side effects: • Skin rashes • Irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat • Sneezing • Sinus infections • Coughing • Wheezing • Allergic reactions • Asthmatic reactions • Upper respiratory infections • Nausea • Fatigue • Headaches • Difficulty breathing
Side effects can vary, as each person carries a different sensitivity to mildew. Additionally, anyone with a pre-existing condition—like asthma, allergies, or respiratory impairment—will likely have much more severe reactions than someone without a pre-existing condition. In extreme cases, mildew and mold may produce substances called mycotoxins. While incredibly useful outside, working to break down decomposing matter, mycotoxins can pose serious health risks when left to spread indoors.
Studies have suggested that mycotoxins may be responsible for some forms of cancer, liver damage, immune system suppression, and even damage to the nervous system. No matter what the symptoms are, getting sick from mildew is certainly less than ideal. Even more importantly, mildew sickness is entirely preventable by eliminating the source as quickly as possible.
Do Home Remedies Work on Mildew Smells?
There is a whole host of home remedies to remove mildew smells. While it may be tempting to follow a home recipe, the truth about home remedies is that they rarely—if ever—are efficient at removing mildew smells.Rather than eliminating mildew smells at its source, home remedies tend to focus on masking the odor with additional fragrances. Unfortunately, masking an odor never ensures that it will stay away forever. Eventually, the added perfume or fragrance will return, creating a never-ending cycle of inefficient masking.
To illustrate the point, take a look at the following common household remedies for clothing and carpets: • Spray tea tree oil & water over the affected area • Mix grapefruit seed extract and water to create a scented solution • Spray vodka on affected area and let sit for 15 minutes • Put clothes in washing machine & wash with vinegar • Use heavy detergents in the washing machine to clean clothes • Wash towels with ammonia & let air dry
When it comes to eliminating mildew smells from household fixtures, home remedies still aren’t well-equipped to handle the job. Consider the following home remedies for basements that have been affected by mildew: • Ventilate the basement with fans & open windows • Add a dehumidifier to decrease moisture • Pour baking soda, vinegar, or kitty litter into bowls & set them on the floor • Mix bleach and water together & spray around the floor and walls Home remedies may sound like great solutions, with many promising to get rid of mildew smells. Unfortunately, mildew smells can easily and deeply permeate into clothing, carpet, towels, and upholstery. Thus, getting rid of mildew smells takes much more than scents or fragrances.
What Causes Clothes to Get Mildew?
When it comes to mildew and clothing, there is a multitude of reasons mildew may appear. The chances are that everyone has experienced the frustration of wet, musty-smelling clothing that hasn’t been thoroughly dried, particularly if you’ve ever been a college student. One of the most common reasons that clothes attract mildew is from leaving freshly washed clothing in the washer for too long. In a similar vein, another common reason comes from taking laundry out of the dryer too early, leaving clothes to sit in a damp heap with just enough moisture to welcome mildew spores.
It is possible that clothes sitting in storage for long periods of time may also attract mildew. Putting clothes in storage without sunlight and damp conditions provide ample opportunities for mildew to grow. Additionally, stagnant water inside the washing machine can often provide a great environment for mildew to grow unchecked, infiltrating all subsequent laundry loads.
Ultimately, the factors that combine to create mildew on clothes are moisture and lack of sunlight. If these two factors are present, clothing is perfectly situated to host a growth of mildew.
How to Get Mildew Smell Out of Clothes
Getting mildew smell out of clothing can be a tricky process. Spores and gasses released from mildew are prone to be absorbed into fabrics and can permeate the entire article of clothing in no time. Effectively removing the mildew smell from clothes takes an advanced technology. To remove mildew odors from clothing, the best detergent is one which breaks down the compound structure of odors, like the OdorKlenz Laundry which utilizes an earth mineral technology which is not only safe but effective at removing odors.Rather than simply masking odors, the OdorKlenz Laundry line neutralizes them completely, eliminating unpleasant smells for good. Not only can the OdorKlenz Laundry additives remove mildew smells from clothing, but they can also remove:
• Gasoline odors • Perfumes & fragrances • Sweat & body odor • Pet & urine odors • Musty or wet smells • Smoke & tobacco
Rather than add more scents to mask the unpleasant smell, OdorKlenz Laundry works by neutralizing, breaking down, and eliminating odors at the source, without the use of toxic chemicals or perfumes. For those who have chemical or fragrance sensitivities, using the liquid, powder, or deodorizer from OdorKlenz offers a safe and effective solution to permanently removing mildew smells from clothing.
What Causes Mildew Smell in Towels?
Often, thinking about mildew smells will automatically conjure up an image of towels. Out of all types of linen, towels are perhaps most likely to become a breeding ground for mildew. There are plenty of scenarios for damp towels to attract mildew, including: • Damp towels left out at the pool • Laundry removed from the dryer too soon • Improper drying • Towels left on the bathroom floor • Leaving damp towels to sit in a laundry basket • Letting towels sit in the washer overnight • Stagnant water in your washing machine
Another big cause of mildew smell in towels comes from the failed attempts at eliminating the mildew smell in the first place. Once mildew sets in, normal laundry detergent is largely ineffective at eliminating the musty, pungent scent. The best that laundry detergent can do is cover up the scent, though this typically means putting towels in the wash repeatedly without results.
How to Get Mildew Smell Out of Towels
With so many opporortunities  for mildew to grow on towels, it’s important to know exactly how to remove that musty smell. Since regular detergents are not equipped to eliminate mildew smells thoroughly, many homeowners end up throwing away their musty towels in frustration. Thankfully, the OdorKlenz Laundry additive offers a thorough and effective solution for getting mildew smells out of towels once and for all. OdorKlenz Laundry additive is designed to work alongside your regular detergent as an additive to eliminate pungent, lingering odors. For musty mildew smells, the additive is specially designed to address the spores and gasses that have absorbed into fabrics and also works to remove towels that have taken on a wet and damp smell as well.
Rather than add more scents to mask the unpleasant smell, OdorKlenz Laundry additive works by neutralizing, breaking down, and eliminating odors at the source, without the use of toxic chemicals or perfumes. For those who have chemical or fragrance sensitivities, using the OdorKlenz Laundry additive provides a safe and effective solution to permanently removing mildew smells from towels.Without harsh chemicals, masking agents, or fragrances, the OdorKlenz Laundry additive is a wholly efficient and safe way to permanently eliminate mildew odors, rather than temporarily hide them.
What Causes Carpet to Smell Like Mildew?
Carpet is particularly prone to absorbing noxious odors and fumes, especially when it comes to mildew smells. The gasses and spores from mildew can attach themselves to carpet fibers, allowing spores to multiply and grow.
Another reason why carpet is susceptible to mildew smells comes from its ability to retain moisture. Once water seeps into the carpet, it can be difficult to dry out. Not only does carpet retain moisture well, but it tends to cover a wide area, giving mildew ample space to grow. There are plenty of causes for carpeting to smell like mildew. Some of the most common causes are: • Burst pipes underneath the floor • Leaks and drips from air conditioning units • Carpet cleaning that doesn’t dry properly • Spilled drinks that are neglected • Melted snow and ice from winter boots • Damp padding below the carpet • High humidity & condensation • Flooding (typically regarding basement carpets)
Ultimately, mildew only needs moisture, darkness, and oxygen in order to thrive. When it comes to carpets, any moisture that is not resolved within 24-48 hours severely increases the risk of mildew. In fact, mildew can still begin growing even if moisture is dried and cleaned away within that time frame.Wet padding is perhaps one of the most severe causes of mildew smells in a carpet. Once the padding beneath the carpet is affected, options for salvaging the carpet severely decrease. If mold travels from the padding to the surface of the carpet itself, often the only option is to replace the entirety of the carpet.Getting mildew smells out of your home can certainly be challenging, and perhaps one of the most difficult smells to eliminate comes from mildew. After the presence of mildew has been eliminated, odors can linger within the fabric of the carpet, creating a less than desirable—and potentially dangerous—living situation.
How to Get Mildew Smell Out of Carpet
Removing mildew smells out of carpeting is a careful and calculated process. Many home remedies recommend vacuuming and washing, your carpeting with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to remove the musty smells and although these methods may work to slightly reduce the odors, they are not thorough enough to eliminate musty odors for good. There are plenty of scented sprays and treatments that focus on adding pleasant smells to the carpet, but these are only temporary solutions to a permanent problem. Once mildew smells have permeated the carpet, masking the odor will not solve the issue
OdorKlenz Source Odor Treatment
There are many products on the market which claim to be able to remove musty and mildew smells from carpets but the majority of those products rely on masking agents and fragrances to cover the odor rather then physically address them. For eliminating musty & mildew smells from carpets and upholstery. The OdorKlenz Source Odor Treatment is one of the best available natural deodorizers on the market as it works to attack the chemistry behind the odors without the use of masking agents or toxic chemicals. The product can be applied on any water safe surfaces  and can be also be applied to any fabrics, upholstery, or other surfaces that are water extractable.Rather than relying on fragrances or masking agents to temporarily cover offensive smells, it offers a permanent and thorough solution through patented odor-neutralizing technology. For a comprehensive, safe, and effective treatment of mildew odors from indoor and outdoor carpeting, the OdorKlenz Source Odor Treatment is a perfect solution.
Conclusion
Tackling the challenge of removing musty, mildew smells requires taking an in-depth approach. Using household cleaners or home remedies to eliminate mildew odors will only mask the smell, rather than removing it for good. Luckily, using OdorKlenz products allows for musty, mildew smells to be thoroughly and permanently eliminated from clothing, towels, and carpeting. Not only does this allow for these items to be saved, but it also restores indoor air quality, improving health and overall wellbeing inside the home
