On this Istanbul Old City food tour we discovered hidden gems, small restaurants and food carts, a stones throw away from the main tourist areas.
If you are planning a trip to Istanbul then my Istanbul Travel Guide and the Top Travel Tips for any traveller are invaluable.
I love taking a food tour on my first full day in any city as it allows me to learn about the history of the area visited as well as becoming acquainted with the eateries loved by locals. This Istanbul Old City street food tour was the first that I went on with my brother and Simone, during a family trip to Istanbul. Neither had ever been on a food tour and I wanted them to experience the amazing food as well as the often overlooked areas of the Old City.
I had been on the Backstreets of the Bazaar Quarter and the Born on the Bosphorus food tours as well as the Shop, Cook, Feast cooking class with Cookistan on my previous solo trip to Istanbul. The two remaining available and alcohol free tours were the Culinary Secrets of the Old City and Hidden Beyoğlu tours, with one in the Old City and the other in Cihangir and the streets behind Istiklal Street in Beyoğlu.
Since we would be staying in both areas during the trip it seemed like a good idea to know where to find the best foods in those areas.
RESERVATION
I booked and paid for the Culinary Secrets of the Old City Istanbul food tour on the Culinary Backstreets website. The tour lasts for approximately 5-5.5 hours and cost US$ 125 per person at the time of booking. I received a 10 percent “Welcome Back! Discount” since I had booked food tours with them previously.
LOCATION
The meeting place for the Culinary Secrets of the Old City food tour was in front of the Hamdi restaurant in the trading area adjacent to the Spice Bazaar. We were staying in Sirkeci at the Doubletree by Hilton and took the tram from Gülhane Park to Eminönü.
This Istanbul walking tour would be covering an area between the Spice Bazaar and a Kurdish neighborhood near the Valens aqueduct. It was slightly overcast but pleasantly warm for September and we looked forward to seeing the Old City from a new perspective.
To get an idea of the area or to check rates and availability for accommodation in the Old City, you may use the map below. Booking.com (function(d, sc, u) { var s = d.createElement(sc), p = d.getElementsByTagName(sc)[0]; s.type = 'text/javascript'; s.async = true; s.src = u + '?v=' + (+new Date()); p.parentNode.insertBefore(s,p); })(document, 'script', '//aff.bstatic.com/static/affiliate_base/js/flexiproduct.js');
TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
Our friendly tour leader Gonça, was also a knowledgeable and engaging Istanbul food guide and promised to share the culinary secrets of the Old City. She showed us the best non-touristy places to eat and shop at on our walk. These were all places that sold authentic products that Istanbulites came from all across the city to buy.
We started by visiting a Simit and Açma cart near the entrance to the underpass for the Eminönü tram station. The same man has operated the cart for more than thirty years and he had a quiet dignity about him.
After buying simit from him we proceeded to the market stalls in the lanes around the Spice Bazaar. Gonça pointed out a few of the stores where tour participants could purchase Turkish coffee beans and coffee equipment later. She also gave us some pointers about what to look for when buying the Turkish coffee pot called cezve.
Turkish breakfast at the Tea shop
We stopped at a deli cart in front of the Han where we were having breakfast and Gonça picked up a few items for the breakfast. In addition to simit, the breakfast included kaymak (Turkish buffalo milk clotted cream), honey, olives, cheese, pastrami, chili paste and a salad made from greens from her garden. The kaymak from the cart was creamy and a delight with lashings of honey and hunks of simit. There were also copious amounts of tea throughout the meal and it was finished with Turkish coffee.
I watched my brother put some kaymak and honey on a piece of simit and then for the next bite he also added a dash of the chili paste. I had done exactly the same thing on my first tour two years previously, and the walk leader on that tour nearly had an apoplectic fit. Apparently I was ruining the perfect combination of kaymak and honey, but for me it was actually enhanced by the savoriness of the chili paste.

We walked through the Traders Hans passing shops and stalls selling fragrant spices, dried fruits and nuts as well as textiles. I could not help but capture the gloriously vibrant colors of the dried summer vegetables and the fresh ripe figs.

Lezzet i Sark – Rüstem Paşa Mahallesi, Hasırcılar Cd. No:38, 34116 Fatih
Our next stop was at a corner cafe that was renowned for Ezo Gelin Çorba a warming lentil and bulgur soup from Gaziantep. Gaziantep is an Anatolian city fondly referred to by locals as the food capital of the world. The cuisine is varied and the main driving force behind their local economy.
Although it sounds strange to eat soup early in the morning it was quite welcome and also nourishing and delicious.
Osmanlı Kebapçısı – Rüstem Paşa Mahallesi, 34116 Fatih/Istanbul, Turkey
After the soup we walked through the Hans and the backstreets to reach a kebab house where the speciality was Cağ kebabı, horizontally spit roasted meat that is thinly sliced and served with herbs wrap style in an almost translucent flatbread.
The lamb was perfectly cooked and seasoned and every mouthful was a delight under the ancient tree.

Osmanli Balikcisi – Rüstem Paşa Mahallesi, Uzun Çarşı No:232, 34116 Fatih
The next stop is renowned for their fish and seafood and we had the house speciality, fried anchovies with pickled chili peppers and salad leaves. We also had a taste of Turkish kibbeh, their take on the popular Levantine dish of minced meat stuffed inside a shell of finely ground bulgur wheat. I quite enjoyed the flavor of the kibbeh which was a bit more tomatoey and spicy than the Levantine original.

Mavi Haliç Pide Salonu – Sarıdemir Mahallesi, Kutucular Cd. No:28, 34134 Fatih
We walked further along the backstreets to reach a pide shop that we returned to later that week on our final shopping trip. The verdict was unanimous: great service and the best pide we had tasted thus far. We washed down the egg and meat pide with a tall glass of cold ayran.
The pide was so good that we went back there a few days later on our final shopping trip.

Altan Şekerleme – Demirtaş Mh.kıble Çeşme Cad./no.68 Kantarcılar, 34134 Fatih
Our next stop was a bit of walk from the pide shop and located past the area where they sold safes. Altan Confectionery is a family sweet shop that has been trading since 1865, selling traditional Turkish hard sweets and lokum (Turkish Delight). The owner Mustafa recommended his favorites and let us taste a variety. The lokum was fragrant and freshly made, chewy and not overly sweet, and we ended up purchasing a few types to snack on during the rest of our trip.

Bereket Döner – Rüstem Paşa Mahallesi, Mahkeme Sk. No:240, 34116 Fatih
On the way to our next stop we dropped by a Han where the older gents were taking tea and watching younger metalsmiths at work. The doner was cheap, flavorful but not too filling.

Vefa Bozacisi – Mollahüsrev Mahallesi, Vefa Cd. No:66, 34134 Fatih
On the walk to the next stop our tour leader warned us that the drink we were going to taste was much beloved by Turks but an acquired taste for many. The beverage called Boza, is made of millet semolina fermented with water and sugar. The light beige color liquid is specific to this brand of Boza and results from their specific technique. This shop is still owned by the same family whose ancestor founded the business in 1870 after immigrating from Albania.
I must confess that it will take a while for me to acquire a taste for boza. The mouth feel was viscous and thick and I found it difficult to sip or savor. After the first taste I gulped it down, trying to not let it touch my taste buds and then cleansed my palate with a homemade lemonade.

We had quite a walk to the final stop and stopped by the Süleymaniye mosque on the way. It was after the time for the congregational prayer time so we had it all to ourselves.

Siirt Şeref Büryan Kebap Salonu – Zeyrek Mh., İtfaiye Cd. No:4, 34083 Fatih
This restaurant is located in the Kurdish precinct next to the Valens Aqueduct. It is another Istanbul business that has been operational for more than a hundred years. The first branch was established in 1892 and it has now expanded to four branches.
They specialize in traditional food from the area of Siirt, in the Kurdish region of Southeastern Turkey.
Our lunch consisted of roasted lamb with salad and dessert and because it is so sought after had to be ordered two days in advance. This lamb is the speciality of the house and is cooked underground in a special copper cooker.

We were so full by the end of the tour that we decided to walk down to the Aksaray tram station and get back to the hotel from there.
Verdict
This food walk made me realize how important it is to keep small family owned businesses operating. They are the keepers of the traditions and preservers of the food culture and have been perfecting their trade for generations. We tasted well known Turkish favorites like simit, pide and doner as well as lesser known specialities like the Cağ kebabı, boza and the underground roasted lamb. We loved this tour and were excited about the next one.

Aspiring Travel Writers and Bloggers often ask us "what exactly is a 'media trip' (or a 'press trip')?" These two phrases are used interchangeably, although you will see and hear Media Trip used more often lately.
Put merely it is a trip sponsored by a destination (sometimes a resort , different times a Vacationer Board or Chamber of Commerce) that is provided to individuals who work in the media (journalists, writers, reporters, bloggers, and so forth). Usually these are all-expenses-paid trips, however occasionally only the resort & meals are lined and you present (part or all of) your personal airfare (generally a resort would possibly cover your expenses from, say Miami to Jamaica, so you just should get yourself to Miami). Usually a PR Agency handles all the main points and coordinates the invites and writers or bloggers.
Tumblr media
Media Journeys are typically provided privately to established journey writers, however most often are open to anyone who desires to use IF you meet certain requirements (corresponding to a documented writing project from a publication with a circulation above a specified quantity, or a documented minimal degree of website traffic on a high-rating travel weblog). On rare events a Media Journey could also be obtainable to starting travel writers or journey bloggers by an internet-savvy marketing person who understands that there are some very WEB OPTIMIZATION-savvy journey bloggers writing at the moment which might be more and more influencing vacationers by making the most of robust social media networking expertise.
To help beginning travel writers we've compiled a list of "Prime 10 Do's and Don'ts" so that if you are invited on a Media Journey, you'll come across like a seasoned professional (and maybe get invited on more of them).
First the DO's:
1. DO your homework before you go - lookup the destination online and browse all the things you can find - start on the official web site and print out info that you can seek advice from as you are writing. Create an inventory of questions earlier than you go and take it with you - add to your list as you are experiencing the vacation spot and also you think of new questions;
2. DO remember to try TripAdvisor, Yahoo Journey, iGOuGO.com, and other travel assessment sites - learn the critiques, focusing on any that are inside the previous 12 months or less, keeping in mind that one place can't please everybody, so that you're sure to see some dangerous critiques blended in with the great ones. Ignore them if they're over 6 months old - many resorts learn them too and do a great job of reacting by making improvements. Merely take observe and see in the event you spot enhancements when you're there and be sure you mention it in your overview.......which leads into....;
three. DO write up a Review for TripAdvisor.com and submit it together with some photos. Not a member yet? Higher be part of. It is the number one spot on the internet that sensible travelers test before they go someplace, so it is both a good way to increase your audience and another outlet to your writing. Join their forum and put up there as properly. You'll want to observe all of their tips;
4. DO take each an excellent high quality digital camera and a small video camera (the Flip HD or Mino is ideal) - more importantly USE them each continuously - you'll be able to never have too many digital pictures or movies to work with while you get house;
5. DO take a Twitter-succesful cell phone and Tweet usually about your trip DURING your journey (don't have a Twitter account yet? Higher get one.). In case you can, post typically during your trip to your Fb and MySpace accounts as properly. The thought is to construct curiosity for the articles you will write and submit;
6. DO benefit from any time you get to spend with the individuals who work at, and for, the resort or destination in an effort to ask your questions and get some official answers.
7. DO reap the benefits of any actions provided to you - even those you is perhaps reticent to participate in due to your personal likes/dislikes or phobias. In any case, your obligation is to your readers - you're there to "report" on all the things so do an excellent job of it;
eight. DO pattern as a lot of the meals as you may (after you take a photograph of it). Observe that I stated "pattern" - you do not need indigestion but you do want to have the ability to give an intensive overview of the food out there to anyone who goes there - and that means at native eateries in addition to those on the resort it's possible you'll be staying at. Be certain you're trying the 'local cuisine', not just the standard fare that you just'd discover anywhere;
9. DO attempt to discover a native contact who is actually 'plugged in' to the native scene - whether or not that is a Advertising/PR/Actions director at the destination, a chamber of commerce employee or member, or someone from the tourist board. Ask them to maintain you abreast of local happenings and occasions that you would possibly need to return for, or perhaps they will submit visitor articles about them if you can't.
If your readers find your travel article on a specific vacation spot attention-grabbing, it is a good wager that they'd be thinking about studying extra;
10. DO submit any articles, blog posts, or critiques that you write to article advertising and marketing websites similar to

Rome
My first week long trip was supposed to be to Croatia. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to enter the country because of the limited validity passport I was given in Amsterdam. It’s a long story, so if you want more details on that you can read all about it in my Passport & Visa Recovery blog.
So, I spontaneously decided to fly to Rome to see Kyle, my boyfriend. I didn’t know how I could crash the other trips kids in my program were on that week, however I knew Kyle would be in Rome all week with his classes.
It was so nice flying into a country where someone could give me advice on how to get around. Kyle gave me all the details on how to get to the city center from the airport. I took a train from FCO to Roma Termini. Kyle met me at the station and we walked to his apartment. It was so nice being able to put faces to names of his five roommates. I was also really grateful they accepted me into their apartment for the week; I was able to sleep on their couch and save money by not having to stay in a hostel. Saving money was much needed after I paid for two new passports, I missed out on my pre-paid Croatia trip, all the flights involved, a makeup flight for Paige after I couldn’t fly, a flight back to Prague, and a flight to Rome.
After all the stress from the weekend (being stuck in Istanbul, being forced to make new week long plans, etc.), waking up in Rome the first morning was a breath of fresh air. The view outside of the apartment was beautiful.
Tumblr media
My first order of business in Rome was to go to the US Embassy. I had to get a new limited validity passport that had a longer time period on it so that I could travel to non-Schengen countries without issue. The employees at the embassy were so kind. The process went a lot more smoothly than before, they answered all of my questions, and they had a lot of compassion for me and my situation.
After, I made the trip to Kyle’s school. He was in class so I made a lap around the school then went to the park across the street, Villa Sciarra, to walk around and relax. They had HUGE snake plants, I was set.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After his class he brought me to this small café. It’s run by an American guy who makes delicious American food for all the study abroad kids in Rome. Apparently, he has his own guy who sells him bacon because it’s so hard to find American style bacon in Europe. The café had wi-fi too, so I decided to stay there and read a book while Kyle went back to his last class.
Tumblr media
When his classes for the day ended, we walked back to his apartment together. Kyle showed me the beauty around his school and on his walk home. I loved it. Rome was so green and warm during my time there it was like a true vacation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That night we walked around his neighborhood: Trastevere. We walked past all kinds of restaurants promoting pizza and pasta and enjoyed hearing the live music. We finally settled on Ristorante le Mani in Pasta where they were cutting fresh pasta in the entrance. Yum! I got the strozzapreti and Kyle ordered spaghetti carbonara. Strozzapreti has an interesting history that Kyle shared with me over our meal. Strozzapreti translates to “strangle the priests.” Back in the day when there was a lot of really bad corruption in the church, each day, the cardinals and priests in Rome would pick one household every evening. These houses they went to were basically told to feed the visitors. However, these homes were not wealthy and would dread being chosen each night. The wives would have to cook for their spontaneous visitors, often more than ten priests at a time. Meanwhile, the husbands would have to shine all the shoes of the priests. While the wives rolled the pasta, they would roll and roll and roll it to make the pasta extra fat, and every roll of their hands they would say “strozza preti, strozza preti, …” cursing the priests.
Tumblr media
After dinner, we got gelato and walked home along the River Tiber.
The next morning I again could not help but sit in awe over the beautiful morning light sweeping across the apartment complex.
Tumblr media
I met with Julie, another girl apart of my Prague program, to do a free walking tour that morning. The tour took us to many places around Rome. To start we saw: Porta del Popolo, Piazza del Popolo, Fontana della Dea di Roma, Fontana del Nettuno, Santa Maria in Montesanto, and Santa Maria dei Miracoli. This is where visitors to Rome and groups that wanted to take over Rome would first encounter the city in the old days. The piazza is huge and beautifully decorated to show the power of Rome. We then walked down Via del Corso which was full of high end shopping stores.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We made our way to Mausoleo di Augusto where our guide dove into the history of Augustus (both his name history as well as the rest of his life).
Tumblr media
After this, we went to Gelateria Della Palma, where they serve 150 flavors of gelato. I got raspberry and lemon. Yum!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We walked to the Pantheon after and even had the chance to walk inside because there was no line. Crazy to think it was built nearly 2000 years ago. The dome remains one of the world’s largest unreinforced concrete domes today. Also, the height to the dome’s oculus is the same as the diameter of the interior circle. Inside the Pantheon is Raphael’s tomb, with the inscription: “Here lies Raphael, by whom Nature feared to be outdone while he lives, and when he died, feared that she herself would die.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After, we went to the Piazza Navona where we saw the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi. The fountain represents the four rivers from the four continents in which papal authority had spread at that time. The rivers were the Nile representing Africa, the Danube representing Europe, the Ganges representing Asia, and the Rio de la Plata representing the Americas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, we crossed the Ponte Umberto I to see the Supreme Court building. Then we walked just a bit further to see the Vatican from far away.
Tumblr media
I enjoyed the tour and learned a lot. A few of us from the tour went back to a place the guide recommended to get food. It was so fun! There was a German, an Australia, two Israelis, and two Americans. It was probably the most interesting meal I had abroad, as I was able to see massive cultural differences among all of us. I also really enjoyed my pesto meal.
Tumblr media
When lunch ended I went back to Trastevere. Kyle and I met up at Giuffre Gelato up the street from his place and we ordered Gelato Brioche, which is Sicilian gelato that is placed in between two sweet buns. Yum!
Tumblr media
After, we bought groceries to use for dinner later on. Then we headed out to Kyle’s soccer practice. That’s right! He tried out for his neighborhood soccer team in Italy and MADE IT. Absolutely crazy. I had a lot of fun watching the dynamic of the team practice, as it was all in Italian, even though some of the boys were other study abroad kids. Thank goodness Kyle can speak Italian!
Tumblr media
For dinner, Kyle made me sciuè sciuè. It was quite a treat!
Tumblr media
The next day Kyle and I had brunch near his school at HomeBaked before we started our days. He had class and I planned to go to the Vatican. I waited at the bus stop for 25 minutes before I realized the bus was never coming. I decided to walk, until Google maps sent me down a road with no sidewalk and blind corners. I got scared I would get hit and tried to make my own route through a park, Villa Doria Pamphili, until I got lost and realized this route wasn’t toward the Vatican. At that point I gave up and just waited in the park until Kyle’s class let out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he had a break between classes we grabbed coffee. After, I went to the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola and headed over to Terrazza del Gianicolo. I stumbled upon this view of Rome from the terrace that became one of my favorites!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That night I went to another one of Kyle’s soccer practices. This time it was raining and a few of the boys during a drill told me to take shelter inside the field under the covered bench. I sorta waved them off because first I felt like it was an intrusion, and second I didn’t want to interrupt or get in the way of their drill. After the drill was over and the coach gave them a water break he came over and told me to sit on the bench with the rest of the team. It was quite the experience being up close and personal with everyone. I loved it. From this view I got the inside scoop on everything being said, despite not understanding most of it from my limited Italian language skills, it was still wonderful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next day Kyle didn’t have any classes so we made a plan to hit a few major spots in Rome. First, we started with Pizza Boom, Kyle’s favorite local pizza place. We got our pizza and headed off to Piazza Venezia. We sat and enjoyed our pizza while admiring fellow tourists and locals roam and explore. Next, we walked past the Roman Forums on our way to the Colosseum. The Colosseum blew me away. It was HUGE. Despite it not being the intended sight, through years of wear and tear you can see all the rooms that had been built underneath the main floor. It was fascinating!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Colosseum was great and all, until it start monsooning. That’s when we ended up jumping on any random bus we could get because it was so bad and windy and wet.
Tumblr media
This really messed up the rest of our plans because after this we could not get a bus back in the direction we needed.
Tumblr media
We hoped on metro and did our best to get to the Vatican before they stopped allowing visitors. We got there with just enough time to explore St. Peter’s Basilica. It was massive, and absolutely beautiful. Inside we got to see the Tomb of the Apostle Peter. When they closed up and we had pushed our stay, we were able to enjoy the sun fully set behind Vatican City. It was a wonderful sight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That night we used TripAdvisor for food recommendations and settled on a dinner place that was the best in Municipio Rome 1, which covers about 1/5 of Rome. Crazy! It was beyond delicious. No pasta could ever beat it.
Tumblr media
After dinner, we got our hands on gelato again. We enjoyed it at the Trevi Fountain, and followed it up with throwing our coins in the fountain. When in Rome!

Backpacking Tips to Save you Money and Headaches!
While traveling, experience starts to save you both money and headaches abroad.  Looking back at our early months traveling we face-in-palm to think of the costly mistakes we made.   We share them here to help you avoid stupidity like ours.
book your first two nights -only-
You did it. You found the perfect AirBnb to spend the next four weeks.  The place looks spotless, modern, and it's even got free high speed wifi!  Hold up two seconds before you commit to 7+ days though.
What you don't know is that the neighboring property is a farm, roosters don't wait until morning to crow, and there is a pig pen built right up next to the wall of your bungalow.  Somehow all the reviews seemed to miss these details.  That's why, unless you’re dealing with peak season or an exceptional value on a spot, you might be better served by only booking a couple days.
Booking two days gives you two specific advantages:
A great “homebase” to start with that you can count on sleeping at while you see if there is better accommodation or locations nearby.
A cheap start.  Book somewhere SUPER cheap for the first 2 nights.  It's only 2 nights.  Then you can see where you want to be, and you might even stay!
If you do like the place you've booked, AirBnb owners and most small hotel owners are only too happy to deal in cash and cut out the middle man booking site.  You can save quite a bit going this route.
walk 100 meters to save 50%
Walking by the beach in Krabi today, I was reminded how true this specific piece of advice is.  Prices always seem to tumble after just a two block walk away from the central tourist area.  Beers that cost $2.50 fell to $1.  Sunscreen that one store was asking $19 for was only $10 a couple hundred feet away.
The most obvious savings come out when its time to eat.   Almost without fail, when we find ourselves in a crowded attraction area, we hoof it two blocks away from the masses.  Prices on food drop drastically and you will still find locals who speak some English.
An additional bonus is that food tends to be better the further you are from main tourist attractions.  Restaurants, street carts and cafes can’t get by alone on tourist traffic so they have to serve up a product of decent quality. Always looks for the restaurant that locals are eating at!
buy expensive tours with caution
Most tour companies are COMPLETELY full of shit since they are working with people that they are never going to see again. The nicer someone selling tours is, the more full of shit they probably are.
To avoid disappointment, you need to be procurement when booking a tour.  What is procurement?  It’s a fancy word for how businesses buy from other businesses.  Procurement sets the business terms of transactions and decides who, how and what they’re buying. (The author of this article may have been a procurement manager at one time as well.) Procurement is as boring as it sounds.
How to buy a tour:
What is the value of the tour?  If you’re doing a $30 booze cruise you probably don’t need to be as rigorous with the steps below.  If you’re doing a two person Halong Bay cruise that's going to set you back $600 USD, you might want to put more effort into it.
What specifically are you buying? A cabin on the cruise?  Is it a shared bathroom or private?  Size of bed? Oh, no bed, just a hammock?  How big is the hammock? How many meals are included? Are drinks included? Are adult drinks included?
What is specifically NOT included on the tour?
Where does the tour start specifically, who is your contact, and what time should you be there.
Negotiate: once you have all this information, be brave and negotiate.  Mention how you saw another tour for $X amount and are going to check them out. Watch the prices fall!
On high priced packages, make sure to look up the tour company on Tripadvisor for reviews first as well. Once again, we’re talking about when you’re dropping some serious coin for something like a multiple night boat cruise or for a week long easy rider trip in Vietnam. Worse than wasting a little bit of money is wasting your time.
More expensive food is rarely better food
As a general rule of thumb, the $5 bowl of Pho Bo you’re buying in a sit down restaurant that caters to foreigners is going to be exactly the same as the $.75 cent bowl you would get from a street vendor (or worse because it sat in the kitchen overnight).
Here are the reasons people often cite for going to more traditional, expensive sit down places:
"Street food is dirty and I don't want to get sick."  -If you think that the restaurant kitchen is any cleaner than the street cart you'd be buying from, you're sorely mistaken. If you're worried about food prep, especially in SEA, there is only so much that you can do to limit your risk.  At least small restaurants and street food vendors have everything out in the open where you can get good eye at whats going into the sausage.
"I want more than a few choices in what to eat."  -Many overpriced restaurants that prey on tourists, especially in SEA,  seem to offer a Cheesecake Factory worth of menu options. What that means is that they typically have a lot of old food sitting around frozen or refrigerated in the back. While street food and small restaurants have very few options they also are more reliably serving up fresh food daily.  If you're looking for choice, just walk to the next food vendor.  It may not all be under the same roof but the same diversity of food choices are there.
"Local food is weird and I don't want to eat it." - Stay home and eat at Applebees.
Start with Europe and work east
You may have heard this tip before: avoid culture shock by starting with "easy" countries first.  Before you grab your pitchfork and scream "Lies!", let me tell you all the reasoning behind it:
A.) Things get more interesting the further East you travel.  London isn't nearly as interesting after Istanbul.  Bangkok will rewrite your definition of what normal can be.
B.) Things also get cheaper the further East you travel (for the most part).  If you don't do expensive Nordic/EU countries early on you may find your funds are a bit on the short toward the end of your trip.
C.) You're going to get travel fatigue on a long trip.  I would argue that it takes more effort to get the most out of Europe compared to Asia, the Americas, etc. You can always grab a beach-day to rejuvenate in SEA.
Anything you need to buy, you can buy abroad
Believe it or not, outside of your home country there are literally billions of people who carry out their daily lives! When you plan long term or RTW travel, everything you pack into that backpack is not coming home with you, nor will you need it to.  Every shirt or pair of pants you bring with you doesn't need to be super fast dry, tactical, nano particle, 150 degrees- 40 rated apocalypse proof garment.
You should have a moderate balance of travel mainstays, but otherwise, lighten up.  Your suitcase is going to full of beer brand tank tops from South East Asia soon enough.
Beyond just clothing, you'll be able to get anything else you need almost anywhere you are, even down to prescriptions and medical drugs.  You should talk to your doctor ahead of time if you some more complex prescription needs so that you are able to either order enough drugs for your trip or know the generic name of your prescription to ask for at pharmacy.
But there are some things you should buy on your home turf
Namely, expensive electronics should be purchased at home. Laptops, cameras, GoPros, even cheap tablets should all be purchased in your western home country. Why?
You can purchase with your credit card easily and will have credit card protection.
You can easily contact sellers whether they be online like Amazon or a retail chain like Best Buy in your native language.
Won’t have to deal with problems like knock offs. You'd be surprised how close to the real thing knock off Macs and iPhones can be until you use them for a while.
But wait there's more
Sounds like you're getting ready for a trip!  Whoo!  You might also like these other resources:

ISTANBUL - A city as old as time
Part of the magic of Istanbul is also its architecture - and with many remnants of the city dating back to pre-Roman times, you're never far from the shadow of history. Istanbul holiday offers frequently include the chance to stay at a luxury hotel in the heart of Sultanahmet and the "old" city, where architectural gems such as the fabled Topkapi Palace and Blue Mosque are found. The heart of Istanbul is ideally explored by foot but for more extensive trips the ferries that circulate between the north and south shore open up the entire span of the city to view

Serefiye Underground Cistern – The Theodosius Cistern:
Like much of Istanbul’s history, Theodosius cistern - Serefiye Sarnici was lost to view for many years. In the second decade of the 20th century, Arif Pasa Konak, a family mansion, was built over the top of the cistern.  Then in the 1950s, the Eminonu Council building was erected on the site. In 2010 the Greater Istanbul City Council decided to knock the building down as part of a move to preserve the city’s historical buildings and monuments.  Theodosius Cistern covers a space of 25 by 45 meters and has fewer columns than Binbirdirek and Yerebatan Cisterns. Its roof is 9 meters high, supported by 32 marble columns. Entry to the cistern is free and it will continue to be used to house installations, exhibitions, and cultural events.

Gobekli Tepe - The new World Heritage sites
The World Heritage Committee, meeting in Manama since 24 June under the chair of Shaikha Haya Bint Rashed al-Khalifa of Bahrain, inscribed two cultural sites in Germany and Turkey as well as two mixed (i.e. both cultural and natural) sites in Canada and Colombia, on the World Heritage List this afternoon. The inscription of sites will continue on 2 July.
The new World Heritage sites, in order of inscription, are:
Cultural sites:
Göbekli Tepe (Turkey) – Located in the Germuş mountains of south-eastern Anatolia, this site presents monumental circular and rectangular megalithic structures, interpreted as enclosures, which were erected by hunter-gatherers in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic age between 9,600 and 8,200 BC. It is likely that these monuments were used in connection with rituals, probably of a funerary nature. Distinctive T-shaped pillars are carved with images of wild animals, providing insight into the way of life and beliefs of people living in Upper Mesopotamia about 11,500 years ago.
Naumburg Cathedral (Germany) – Located in the eastern part of the Thuringian Basin, the Cathedral of Naumburg, whose construction began in 1028, is an outstanding testimony to medieval art and architecture. Its Romanesque structure, flanked by two Gothic choirs, demonstrates the stylistic transition from late Romanesque to early Gothic. The west choir, dating to the first half of the 13th century reflects changes in religious practice and the appearance of science and nature in the figurative arts. The choir and life-size sculptures of the founders of the Cathedral are masterpieces of the workshop known as the “Naumburg Master”.
Mixed sites:
Pimachiowin Aki (Canada) – Pimachiowin Aki (“The Land That Gives Life”) is a forest landscape crossed by rivers and studded with lakes, wetlands, and boreal forest. It forms part of the ancestral home of the Anishinaabeg, an indigenous people living from fishing, hunting, and gathering. The area encompasses the traditional lands of four Anishinaabeg communities (Bloodvein River, Little Grand Rapids, Pauingassi and Poplar River). It is an exceptional example of the cultural tradition of Ji-ganawendamang Gidakiiminaan (“keeping the land”) which consists of honoring the gifts of the Creator, respecting all forms of life and maintaining harmonious relations with others. A complex network of livelihood sites, habitation sites, travel routes and ceremonial sites, often linked by waterways, embodies this tradition.
Chiribiquete National Park – “The Maloca of the Jaguar” (Colombia) – Located in the north-west Colombian Amazon, Chiribiquete National Park is the largest protected area in the country. One of the defining features of the park is the presence of tepuis (the Native American word for table-top mountains), sheer-sided sandstone plateaux that dominate the forest. Over 75,000 paintings, spanning more than 20,000 years to the present, are to be seen on the walls of the 60 rock shelters around the bases of the tepuis. Believed to be linked to the worship of the jaguar, a symbol of power and fertility, these paintings depict hunting scenes, battles, dances, and ceremonies. The indigenous communities, which are not directly present on the site, consider the region sacred.
