Shortly after capturing this photo I took a few punches and nearly had my camera smashed by a some wildly enthusiastic bouncers. Fixing A Sweet Tooth

A wasp feeding on what looks like honeydew on a red button ginger. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
This that looked like a wasp was feeding on something that was possibly honeydew, a sugary secretion left by other insects on this red button ginger.
This was produced by a 2013 four thirds sensor and was also a substantial crop of the original image. The auto ISO mode on the EM1 had given me ISO3200 for this one with the exposure pushed 2/3 stop brighter.

ちなみにこれはf2.8、ISO3200、1/250で撮影。コンデジ君にはかなりきつい条件だった

α7 II &  Tamron 80-210mm f3.8-4 CF Tele Macro BBAR MC(Model 03A)にて撮影
1979年発売のMF望遠ズームレンズで東上線を撮影していた。この1枚は若葉駅を発車する下り急行を後追いしたもので、前方車両通過中に車体側面のピーキング機能で赤くなる部分を見計らってピント位置を識別して置きピンし、最後部が通過したタイミングでシャッターを切ったもの。
焦点距離180mmの絞り開放F4ではピントの合う範囲が相当狭く、シャッタータイミングがほぼ一瞬になってしまう上後追いでタイミングが掴みづらいので、狙って成功するかと言われればかなり成功率は低そうな感じ。
古いレンズの上に絞り開放で被写界深度が浅く、若干周辺減光気味なこともあってかフイルム時代を思い起こすような写りになった。フィルム時代は常用感度がISO400程度だったので、シャッタースピードを速くしたい動体撮影では必然的に絞りを開けざるを得ず、被写界深度が浅めになっていたことを思い出した。
現代のフルサイズミラーレス機ではISO3200や6400でも十分実用になるので、動体撮影でもある程度絞って被写界深度を確保できてしまうけど、それはフイルム時代では実現できない写りであるということを再認識させられた。

A King Penguin catching forty winks in the former Jurong Bird Park. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
A stop of positive exposure compensation was used to lift the shadows of this snoozing king penguin. The camera had to be braced against a handrail as the shutter speed was a mere 1/50 second at ISO3200. Lighting was pretty dim in the air-conditioned penguin pen.

Tokyo Station from KITTE, redux
it was a familiar sight, unchanged over the last 4 years. people come to this observation deck located on top of the KITTE mall to get away from the madness on the ground level. taking in the magnificent view of the old western-facing facade of Tokyo Station, with the towering grey skyscrapers looming over the station on the eastern side. the sounds of the trains and their screeching brakes echo as they come to a stop at the station. i spot many couples huddling close together as they take in the panoramic view of the station and the surrounding plaza, a group of photography enthusiasts and their models making good use of the city skyline as a backdrop for their portraiture photographs. oh, how i envy them all for having people accompany them on their respective excursions. i sit amongst the couples, fidgeting with the my camera’s settings and concluding that i have to shoot at ISO3200 or more with my EF 100mm F2.8 lens. once again, my measly tripod i lugged all the way from KL is useless just like it was in Motosuko, but i’ll probably be able to put it to better use on ground level. tonight was different - i didn’t feel the need to rush myself, not because i was short on time, not because it was too cold for me, and certainly not because i was exhausted. i let it all sink in, this atmosphere of being back in Tokyo - at the epicenter, making the most of my week-long trip while not pushing myself. i still had a few more days left, after all. what’s the rush? after a few shots, i put my camera away and let myself blend in with the background.
