Fixing A Sweet Tooth

This that looked like a wasp was feeding on something that was possibly honeydew, a sugary secretion left by other insects on this red button ginger.

This was produced by a 2013 four thirds sensor and was also a substantial crop of the original image. The auto ISO mode on the EM1 had given me ISO3200 for this one with the exposure pushed 2/3 stop brighter.

In this series, I explore how light, shadow, and color create mood and atmosphere. Each image carries a different vibe—from the cool, eerie glow of the workspace to the warm, nostalgic streetlights in the fog. I used contrasting tones—blue, orange, black-and-white—to reflect shifts in feeling, time, and space. Light isn’t just for visibility here; it’s emotional, it tells a story. Shadows create tension and mystery, while color helps set the tone.

ちなみにこれはf2.8、ISO3200、1/250で撮影。コンデジ君にはかなりきつい条件だった

α7 II &  Tamron 80-210mm f3.8-4 CF Tele Macro BBAR MC(Model 03A)にて撮影

1979年発売のMF望遠ズームレンズで東上線を撮影していた。この1枚は若葉駅を発車する下り急行を後追いしたもので、前方車両通過中に車体側面のピーキング機能で赤くなる部分を見計らってピント位置を識別して置きピンし、最後部が通過したタイミングでシャッターを切ったもの。

焦点距離180mmの絞り開放F4ではピントの合う範囲が相当狭く、シャッタータイミングがほぼ一瞬になってしまう上後追いでタイミングが掴みづらいので、狙って成功するかと言われればかなり成功率は低そうな感じ。

古いレンズの上に絞り開放で被写界深度が浅く、若干周辺減光気味なこともあってかフイルム時代を思い起こすような写りになった。フィルム時代は常用感度がISO400程度だったので、シャッタースピードを速くしたい動体撮影では必然的に絞りを開けざるを得ず、被写界深度が浅めになっていたことを思い出した。

現代のフルサイズミラーレス機ではISO3200や6400でも十分実用になるので、動体撮影でもある程度絞って被写界深度を確保できてしまうけど、それはフイルム時代では実現できない写りであるということを再認識させられた。

Afternoon Snooze

A stop of positive exposure compensation was used to lift the shadows of this snoozing king penguin. The camera had to be braced against a handrail as the shutter speed was a mere 1/50 second at ISO3200. Lighting was pretty dim in the air-conditioned penguin pen.

2025年1月19日(日) KPか、K-3 IIか、それが問題だ。

この問題で悩むのは、実に3回目。過去2回はいずれもKPを選んできたが、今回はK-3 IIを選択し、3年7か月間使ってきたKPを下取りに出す前、最後のバードウォッチングで多摩川に出かけた。

KPはK-3 IIの軽量版のような位置づけで、K-3 IIの1年9ヶ月後に発売されている。

大きな違いは、約80g軽くなり、内蔵GPSがフラッシュに置き換わり、アクセラレーター付き��画像処理エンジンとなり高感度画質が向上したことだ。

1回目はミラーレスにかじを切ったニコンからペンタックスに乗り換えるとき、2回目はふとしたきっかけで購入したK-3 IIをK-1 Mark IIに買い替えるとき。

この2回は野鳥撮影をを念頭に、80gの軽さと高感度画質を重視してKPを選んだ。しかし3回目は旅先で撮った風景写真が、どの方角を向いて撮影したものがかわかる電子コンパス機能を重視して、K-3 IIを選んだ。

KP最後のフィールドは、あいにく雲の多い朝となってしまったが、これも最後に高感度での撮影をするチャンスを天がくれたのかもしれない。

この写真はISO6400で撮影。K-3 IIではこの暗さでの野鳥撮影は難しいので、今後はこういう条件ではアクセラレーター付きのK-1 Mark IIを、200g以上重くなってしまうが持ち出すことになるだろう。

こちらはISO3200、高感度ではコントラストが低下してしまうようだが、オナガガモのカップルが愛をささやいているようなこの写真には、これくらいがちょうどいいかもしれない。

3年7ヶ月の間に、KPとはいろいろな場所に出かけた。稚内、音威子府、白老、銚子、松本、諏訪湖、野辺山、上田。神奈川県内や東京都内もよく歩いた。

30年間使ったMamiya NC1000Sの次に、僕の人生を記録してきてくれたカメラだ。心からありがとうと言いたい。

新しい持ち主にも、撮影の楽しみと思い出に残る写真の数々を残してくれることだろう。
