Sometimes, even in work mayhem, we get a perch, a happy place - to watch the sun go, to watch the rain come, to see the colors simultaneously soften and brighten, to feel the hush come over the streets below. Far away I feel the connection to other times and places, to other cities by the sea. To docks and porches, to vistas tucked out of the rain. I finally had a chance to read (slowly) this Autumn 2018 edition of the #parknationaldeportcros magazine that I picked up on #PorquerollesIsland last month. Of particular interest was the cover article on #over tourism that the island experiences. I’ve never been to Porquerolles in the heart of the tourism season, as my comparative pictures of the same beach & bay show (#plagedenotredame). This level tourism was a topic of discussion on all our island review & it is a threat to the #sustainable & #resilient #islands, #communities & #cities globally. After a quick morning session with @fetedelanature @smilo_org on island comms, we dove into workshopping #zeroimpact & #patrimonie/#heritage for #islands. Another amazing day of #sustainablesmallislands @smilo_org gathering on #PorquerollesIsland. 24 #island “popups” including #ZlarinIsland, where I recently did the assessment visit. Our busiest day as #commissiondevaluation @smilo_org (@SMILO_org) kicked off with words of welcome & encouragement from #SMILO chairperson Maxime Prodromides. Our committee had a full day of #island assessment reviews and presentations and wrapped up the day with a team dinner in the quiet (post tourist season) village. Also seen here in these pics are the SMILO bags made from recycled sails (is this not the perfect thing for yours truly). Mine made multiple crossings and races. So glad to be on this journey with great people. And we know how to laugh and work together.
