Update on Izumi's design process!! Plus her incubator lmao.
Its taken me more than a week to get to this point. You have no idea how painstaking it is when you get so involved into a character's design process and want it to look good, especially when you know its mostly because of how much of a perfectionist you are at the end of the day.... Over all? I'm glad I finally have a design I like. I tried SEVERAL different leg and wrist options, skirt options, dresses, etc.
And before aaaaanyone decides to come for me due to giving her a high-low skirt that shows her pelvic area, its on theme not for sex*lization purposes. She's a water themed mahou and in turn I want her design to reflect that, hends a lot of the scalloped edges and the seashells and her being barefoot (although that's also due to her just not liking to wear shoes if she has the choice). Plus it also alludes to frilly swimsuit bottoms that can be seen in both "beach episodes" and in lolita swimwear (yes that exists people). The pearls and shells allude to oceanic themes, and because she's also being given wind undertones, she gets little wings on her ankles. Little Hermes nod lol. And the hip pauldrons? Those allude to Atlantis and how a lot of mermaid royalty tend to have protective armor in more modern scifi.
Tomorrow after work I'll try my hand of what wrist or hand accessories to give her. I know that I want her fingers to be free at least, along with maybe her palms. Outside of that I have no idea.
Also still thinking up names for her incubator. He's gonna be white mostly but instead of pink/red markings and fades on the ears, its probably gonna be teal or something. Also his ear...tail...thingies? They aren't folded in how he's posed. Its actually arounded and bulbous, kinda like how the bottom of an octopus plushie is.

while watching episode 4 I've reached the stage of having to know the vas and the character I first noticed just from the poster was chigiri, red long hair, I guess it's obvious why. and now I see that he's voiced by the same actor who did yamaguchi in haikyuu, which is funny cuz I'm currently having a yamaguchi renesannce. meant to be I guess
I'm also seeing new names in the va list, so that's fun. What a nice change of pace when the main dark-haired or dark demeanour character isn't voiced by ishigawa kaito or ushida yumma, even if i see there is a character voiced by him in blue lock, these two men are following me everywhere, i swear

Not going to lie, I did spend 3+ hours watching the GMMTV 2021 New Decade. And I will admit I got some goosebumps when they did the whole retrospective. So let’s get into it because there is a fuck ton of content!
Let’s start out with the biggest crack potential...Drag I Love You looks like it will be hilarious, and Joss in drag is some next level amazing. Mama Gogo...has the potential to be a steaming hot mess, but hey shirtless Podd, Earth, Drake, Luke, sign me the hell up!
46 days looks silly and fun, and I like WJ Mild and Off together. Enchanted has soooo many cute boys, I almost didn’t recognize Fluke (Gawin). Baker Boys is just more crackheadedness but hey I will watch anything with Lee Thanat. And that leaves us Fish Upon the Sky...aka Med students are this years Engineer boys? It looks hella cute, it’s based on a Jittirain book...I’m in!
Never Too Late-This is probably the one I’m looking forward to most...I love these types of stories and this looks great!
Nanon in his first BL with one of the undisputed princes of BL -Ohm Pawat?!?! This should be angsty and fun! Bring it on!
Forgetting that it’s OffGun, MOND freaking TANUTCHAI is in the house! With First! And Fluke! Not enough exclamation points for how excited I was to see Mond in the trailer. Looks dark along the lines of 3Will Be Free?
Lastly I’m not going to talk too much about F4 except to say, I’ve seen every version of the show and I will probably watch this one. Based on the new trailer I will admit Bright actually seems tailor made for his part, and I think he can act it very well. My pick for the breakout star is definitely Dew, I think he will be the next big thing.
So, this seems to be the year of Joss Wayar and Lee Thanat! I’m happy because I really like them and god knows GMMTV has been sidelining Lee for years! Now we just need MOND in a lead!!! Mek also seems to be showing up in a quite a few series. I saw a lot of Jane and Namtan across the board. Whatever stylist put Luke in that pee yellow suit needs to be fired, but whomever styled Joss, holy shitballs...the head to toe black with leather was so fine it hurt to look at him!

rebirth-txstament-project:
The phone Yomikawa was holding continued to ring, and ring, and ring, but there was no answer.
For whatever reason, the person she wanted to contact was not answering. The moment he was needed most, that person could not be contacted.
“Why isn’t he picking up?!”
She ground her teeth in frustration as the sounds of gunfire and death continued to fill the air from behind them.
At the rate things were going, they were all going to be killed. There was no ifs ands or buts about it. But more than that, most of those teachers who had trained to protect the city and uphold law and order had already given up on that woman and deemed her as a dangerous threat. They were willing to kill her out of fear, and that was the thing that shook Yomikawa.
She did not want to raise her gun at that woman despite the situation, but she only cursed herself for not being able to save her. The person she had bet her odds on saving her was not answering, and she was at a loss.
This was a truly hopeless situation.
Was there no end to this darkness?
“Reinforcements have already been sent in!”
The officer Yomikawa knew as Tsumungi gave that shout as the sounds of multiple vehicles came in from varying directions. The place was being practically flooded with retaliatory forces.
And the number of armed forces that came out of those vehicles was just as impressive.
Huge numbers of men in women wearing tactical gear and powered suits came pouring out of those armored trucks as if a jar of ants had burst open. However, their equipment was what seemed to surprise Yomikawa and her people.
Their gear looked strikingly similar to theirs, yet the color of the uniforms and powered suits were pitch black. Among that, the insignia on their uniforms and powered suits was not the Anti-Skill symbol but instead a silver upside-down cross.
Yomikawa recognized them.
It was some kind of special armed force unit that the Governing Board of Academy City had recently put together in order to deal with problems and incidents that not even Anti-Skill could manage to handle on their own.
They were called the Apocrypha Unit.
And it was then that this area had been transformed into a full blown war zone.
A series of gunfire and small explosions had been unleashed upon the Shura, an absolute force of bedlam that reminded a lot of them just how horrifying war really was. Only this was not a war between armies of opposing countries.
It was a war against someone that had been deemed a threat to Academy City.
Yes.
This was Operation Apocrypha — The city wide operation to purge the city of Cosmic Side Harmfuls and Beneficials.
“What…is this? Are the higher ups really considering using this much force against her?”
“Isn’t this a good thing though? This Harmful has caused enough destruction and carnage tonight. Whatever that thing is, it is not the woman you once knew Yomikawa. Accept the facts. This is a Harmful that has no qualms about hurting anything with in its line of sight. If we want to protect our students and fellow faculty members, that monster must be terminated.”
“What are you saying, Ishigawa?! That isn’t her! She’s not doing this because she wants to! Someone or something is forcing her to do this! If we can reach out to her or find the people that did this to her, we can save her and everyone else! We can’t give up on her!!”
“B-But there is nothing we can do… I don’t even think she is an esper at this point…”
This... really was it, wasn’t it?
The more this went on, the more that small piece, that sole line of sanity began to crumble.
These people... this city... whom she had once stuck her neck out for... was so quick to turn on her.
The rage & violence that had built up over the years, that was once being being let go of, was quickly being built up again.
It was going to be released here in this place in full.
‘... Maybe... maybe she’s right....
‘... I was made this way... how could I be any other way....”
‘... I’m just... so tired....’
... She’s fading....

It felt like the entire world itself was shaking. Like the world would cave into itself from the unbridled powered beginning to be let loose.
And this fight, this war, that had decided now onto this being had sped run the processes of it’s decent into darkness. Enough too where, that third hand, that monstrous claw, did not appear like such anymore. It was more like that of a wing now, it even allow the SHURA to fly if moved like a flapping wing. Like some twisted transformation.

She didn’t sound human anymore either. Or even like a demon.
She was more akin now to the monstrous dragon she had put down not long ago then a human.

Oh this show is going to be frustrating… I can just feel it. Not because it’s bad. In fact I don’t think it is at all. There are moments of impressive wit and quite a bit of substance under the pulp plots but it’s…messy? And it just refuses to be one thing. You can’t settle into a comfortable grove and know what to expect next week. If done well, this could prove a strength in the end, but it’s just as likely, if not more so, to turn the show into a forgettable…mess. I can say that 3 episodes in and I still don’t know what to expect out of Woodpecker Detective’s Office. That’s sort of a compliment.
The only thing I know for sure is that Ishikawa is a horrible friend. And I’m there for it.
Right off the bat, I should say that I preferred episode 2, to this week. I just thought that episode was rather brilliant. But I really respect what this week’s Woodpecker Detective’s Office was trying to do. It just fell a bit short in the end.
After last week’s events left Kyōsuke is jail awaiting trial for murder, his friends (including Ishikawa for some reason) meet up at a local pub for some day drinkin’ and speculatin’ until Soseki interrupts them with Akutagawa and then Ranpo solves it all because that’s what Ranpo does.
It’s pretty simple but there were a lot of layers to the episode and if they had come together just a bit better, it could have been absolutely great.
On the one hand, everyone’s personal theories created another 3 retelling of the story. The tone was fairly light and jovial despite the grim subject matter so I didn’t mind seeing a gruesome death over and over. I quite enjoy this narrative structure with uninformed narrators. You can see the story bend and twist to the sensibilities of who’s telling it. It’s just a device I really like and I’m always happy to see authors employ it.
Beyond that though, it was a bit of a sarcastic pantomime of the actual historical figures. Hagiwara, a poet known for dark imagery and somewhat pessimistic outlook who explored mostly existential angst and anger, is portrayed as a timid man who proposes the most romantic and optimistic version of events. On the other hand Nomura was rather true to form by suggesting a convoluted story of subterfuge and high level plotting.
Akutagawa’s baffling interjection recalled both the short story that the episode was mimicking in structure and was an uncomfortable parallel to the man’s real life long struggle with mental health. For the record I’m a big fan of Akutagawa as an author. Natsume was barely there and the Ranpo we encountered is a student still going by his real name Taro Hirai. Although just as brilliant in observation and deduction, this is a fairly serious and compassionate boy with a obvious sense of responsibility. A far cry from the carefree bon vivant he is usually portrayed as (and seems to actually have been).
The thing is, none of this is explained in any way. You either have to already know because for some reason you’re familiar with classical Japanese authors or go look it up. Otherwise, the references and jokes just seem either a little odd or kind of stilted. And I wouldn’t blame any one for not wanting to do homework just so they can enjoy an episode of anime. There was even some play with Japanese language form that went completely over my head.
By the time the episode was wrapping up and Ishikawa exploded in laughter, I was really wondering how they could all bring it to a close. The only reasonable explanation left painted the protagonist as a pretty terrible person. Not only the way anime characters are sometimes terrible when you actually stop and think about it but the show and other characters still treat them as if they were beyond reproach. In a much more direct and visceral way. What type of mental gymnastics would Woodpecker Detective’s Office do to avoid tarnishing their hero?
Turns out, they leaned into it. The episode did give Ishigawa some motivation or else he would just have been insane, but he is still clearly a very selfish, way too impulsive (and that’s the understatement of the year) disloyal friend. If you could even call him a friend. And that’s kind of cool. It’s unusual at least. And for all his fainting violet ways and amazing generosity, there something not quite right with Kyōsuke. It seems the only part of Ishikawa’s story that was true was that the former tried to strangle him over a short story he wrote. These two have been friends for a long time, that’s not by accident….
What I’m saying is that there was a lot to appreciate about this episode but it lacked context to be enjoyed by all and it was too abrupt and ham fisted in some parts. The resolution felt rushed but it fit the slightly mean and sarcastic tone of the episode.
Ultimately there was no brilliant scheme, no unbelievable set up of events. There wasn’t even a mystery to solve. It was just a very sad story of wasted life and the two episode arc tried to wring out all the humour, excitement and mystery it could out of a tragedy. Like I said, I respect what it was trying to do. A lot. But I think it didn’t quite achieve it.
I figure some viewers will think it was all for nothing and feel cheated. To me, the fact that everything was somewhat useless plays into the theme and events. It was sort of the theme of this particular story. So Woodpecker Detective’s Office might be a show that demands that I read into it. I’m o.k. with that. Let’s see how frustrating next week gets.
Woodpecker Detective’s Office Ep.3 – Secrets and Lies Oh this show is going to be frustrating... I can just feel it. Not because it's bad.
