Summary: I'm squinting against the sun for most of the day, taking in the island, taking in Isak, in these oblique little chiaroscuro glimpses: a flock of hunting fulmars, darkly silhouetted against the pale sky, darting up the cliff face with blade-like speed. Isak's weathered boots scraping over the uneven basalt stone, finding footholds, as he clambers up the final stretch to the peak of Kolturshamar ahead of me.

He has the low sun at his back when he turns to me. His face is mostly in shadow but the sweep of his cheek, the curls peeking out underneath his beanie, are burnished gold by the light.

The rough wind scrapes across the ridge and snatches his words away. I can just about make out his laugh. Then he burrows against me and speaks right into my ear. "Do you want to hear a tragic story?"

Chapter one - For the Best

“Hi again,” Even says when they’re standing in front of each other, his words instantly dissolving into the booming music. “Hi.” The guy tilts his head up, smiling, then slightly leans forwards. “I’m Isak.” “Even.” “Eivind?” Isak frowns, somehow seeming to know that it doesn’t sound quite right. Even shakes his head, then leans in in turn, closer than Isak has just before, close enough that he can bring his lips to his ear, almost brushing his skin. “Even,” he repeats. When he pulls back, he sees Isak’s eyelids flutter for a second, his long lashes casting frail shadows onto his cheekbones. He nods and repeats the name to himself. It’s too low for Even to hear him over the music, but he can see by the movement of his lips that Isak got it right this time.

Summary :

This was supposed to be a simple story.

Boy meets boy in a club on a Friday night.

Boys laugh and dance, boys kiss, boys crave each other. And they agree that their story won’t mean any more than that.

But feelings have the unfortunate habit of getting in the way. So when a one night stand turns into a whole weekend and passionate embraces make way for shared confessions, Even thinks this might begin to look like a love story.

Isak doesn’t seem to feel that way.

Sander: I can't explain why but I feel that there is something that Even and I have in common. Do you know that feeling in your bones? When you meet someone and you feel like you've known them forever? Here, that's exactly what happened to me with Even.

Even: Striking figure, with his bleached  hair - not exactly a blend-and-disappear look—for an agent. You’d think he’d make himself less distinguishable, less obvious. He seemed used to maintaining a neutral expression, not disclosing his thoughts or opinions. All he needed was aviator mirrored sunglasses, and everyone would have known he was a cop.

Robbe: Who does he think he is? Valtersen needs to get off his high horse and stop acting like everyone is inferior to him. He has an ego the size of MAS. If he dares once to question my competence I will pack my bags and go back to Basel.

Isak:There’s the scientist—IJzermans—what the hell was his problem anyway? He came in, eyeballed me and instantly scrunched his face in disgust, not even the decency to hide it. Made my hackles stand up straight. Like I was a personal insult to his existence. Fucking hell!

Lately, I've been getting so many guest kudos and I hate that I don't know if they're legit or bots run amok. I've gotten some fantastic comments from guests without AO3 accounts, so I'm reluctant to shut them out, but that might be what the future holds.

**This is a gross oversimplification of what kind of AU The Boyfriend Experience really is. All I can say is: trust us.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes. Sometimes I'm a little late in replying but I will reply. If someone took the time to read my story and tell me how they felt about it, then I want to respond to them. Say thank you.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I'm not a sad ending fic writer. Early on in my fic writing days, I worked on a non-chronological Veronica Mars fic series and a one-shot in that series, The Teeth by the Shoulder, had an angsty final chapter. That story was meant to connect with the one following, and what came next wasn't angsty at all. BUT, unfortunately, it didn't read that way and readers were like wtf, GC??? That was a structural experiment that didn't quite work. It happens. I still like the story though and how it sets up the one after. A noble failure.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Oh gosh, most of them are pretty happy, weirdly enough. Probably Rest Easy, because the happy ending was a departure from the Scandinavian Noir genre and I felt it was pretty earned.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I've gotten some weird things.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do. What kind? I don't know. The kind with feelings, I suppose. I think sex writing is a great tool for revealing character. That's usually the best kind.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I wrote one tiny crossover for Veronica Mars and New Girl (who famously share an actor, a fact that in typical-me fashion, I did NOT take advantage of) called Legs Up To Her Waist (The French Have a Phrase for It Remix) for a remix challenge. I think it's a lot of fun, I got to delve a little into my Raymond Chandler fixation.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Probably lines here and there, fanon, but not whole stories. I think they're considered too weird by the general population.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! My Handmaid's Tale fic, We Must Refuse to Disappear has been translated into Russian.

I also have a SKAM story, A Lord's Sauce, that was translated into Italian as part of Fandom Trumps Hate. I hope to post that before the end of the year.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, quite happily, The Boyfriend Experience with the wonderful @irazor.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

I don't play favorites. I am enjoying writing Isak/Even now. Probably because they have such a good foundational story to work from for AU purposes.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

The last two chapters of my CMBYN series, Piano Sonata in G Major, "Pense-bête", are so removed from fic expectations (one half of the ship is barely present/there's another, albeit temporary, love interest in one chapter, other nuanced themes are explored in the other) and are so labor-intensive. Every time I look at what I have drafted, I feel exhausted. I am not currently in a place where I can work on it, but I would like to finish it someday. So I can't say for sure that I won't do it, just not anytime soon.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Some nice language, in-character dialogue. Interest in improving.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Simplifying. Proofreading grammar.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

It's a LOT of work. However, I was very lucky when I was writing my CMBYN stories, which feature French and Italian dialogue. I got a tremendous amount of help from some lovely people.

That's partly the reason I haven't continued writing them. I don't like bugging people about translations. It's one thing to spend time writing stories, it's quite another to drag people into the vortex. Free labor is still labor.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

New Girl. Great readers, awesome betas. Really great place to start.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

I have a lot of love for my co-written fic with @irazor, The Boyfriend Experience and my Nordic Noir story, Rest Easy.

Chapter 6: Sometimes when Isak is working, seemingly lost in thought as he sands down one of the new pilasters or cuts two wood pieces to the same length, there's a sudden change to his movements, a sharp intake of breath, and then he turns around and looks for me.

The first time it happens, he is kneeling at the foot of the stairs. He's been pulling on his unwashed hair all day. There's wood dust smeared on his forehead where he must have rubbed the skin with the back of his hand, and there's more of it clinging to the little gilt hairs on his arms. For reasons unknown, he's only wearing one sock.

He's so lovely.

The moment his gaze finds me, he swallows and the tightness around his mouth softens. He gives me a small smile. It stays on his face as he turns back to his work.

Lucas pulls on the tie that is loosened around Eliott’s neck and wraps the silken fabric around his fingers. He straddles the taller brunette, hovering over his thick thighs, refusing to sit down because from this position he gets to look down at the other. The view is nice. Lucas smiles, leaning close enough to feel Eliott’s breath on his lips, close enough to count the individual lashes that frame stormy eyes.

He can see the way his pupils dilate, the way those eyes grow hooded with want.

Do you think you’ll ever write a super smutty multichapter fic (like MAS) again?

halloooo! hmm, not sure. i feel like it's tough to get to that level just because most of the smut came from isak's job. so if my plots pretty heavily incorporate a job (versus focusing solely on personal life/romance) then i would need to find something as sexy as literal sex work. i'm not averse to writing more sex work, of course, perhaps with even being the one doing it at first (he really has a great personality for seducing and making you forget that you are paying for that as a service), but my next challenge would be finding themes to explore that wouldn't be the same as before. i'm afraid i would just write the same fic again!

(which isn't to say i'm not already doing that, it would just feel more obvious.)

i also have other things that have prevented it, like writing for the bang, where i don't feel comfortable posting E-level fics unlocked. and the bang has been my biggest motivator for writing. i have promised someone a couple of updates, one for fredag 5150 and one for mondays, though that one will involve their family, so probably less sex than you would expect. the other fic i was working on before the bang was the school nurse fic, which i expect to be smutty because isak is a club-going slut in it, but also even is the school nurse and it's his POV, so there's already 15k of absolutely zero smut, which isn't great proportion-wise.

but hey! if you have a prompt, i could see what i could do, with the smut-goal in mind. mondays was a prompt from someone else, so maybe that's all it would take.

Chapter 2 - Strangers

Isak frowns, opens and closes his mouth a few times like he’s not sure how to say his next words. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to pour all this out on you,” he finally murmurs, looking down between them and picking at a loose thread on Even’s bedding. “It’s cool, don’t worry. I’m glad you felt like you could talk to me. That it, maybe made you feel better?” “Yeah. Sometimes it’s easier with, you know…” Even raises his eyebrows at him in question when Isak trails off. “Sometimes it’s easier to talk to a stranger.” “Is that what we are? Strangers?” “I mean… kinda, yeah?” “Strangers who’ve had their dicks inside each other.” “Aww…” Isak coos. “You really know how to make a boy feel special, huh.”
