Isadora narrowed her eyes at Wraith. “If you know me as well as you think you do, then you know I’m not as stupid as all that. I’m not letting you free.”

“Who said anything about freedom? The door is locked. I’m sure every inch of this room is under constant surveillance. And there are at least a dozen guards between me and the exit. All I’m talking about is the chance to speak as equals. How many chances will either of us get to talk to someone who understands?”

“You can talk the way you are. I’ve done nothing to your mouth.”

He waggled his unbroken fingers again. “We both know I can’t do anything with my hands like this.” He let out a long, sorrowful sigh—another one straight out of Gabriel’s playbook. “Just like we both know this is going to end unpleasantly. Before that happens, I’d like the chance to have that civilized conversation you mentioned. Not an interrogation. Just a talk—one crusader to another. How long have we both been waiting for that?”

She didn’t say no as she regarded him for a long, tense moment. She was clearly trying to keep her face in its mask of icy indifference, but Wraith was used to reading Gabriel, so he knew how to read her. And she was tempted.

Of course she was. Gabriel would have been. If the shoe had been on the other foot, and they had captured Isadora and locked her up in their warren under the abandoned warehouse they controlled, he would have had to watch Gabriel like a hawk, lest Gabriel have a spasm of conscience and unchain her in the name of letting her have a little dignity. Putting them all at risk like that was exactly the sort of stupid thing he had been stopping Gabriel from doing for ten years, while Gabriel had been keeping him from rushing off in fits of temper.

The problem with Gabriel was that he thought everyone was as painfully principled as he was, even though his long friendship with Wraith should have taught him otherwise. It was both logical and absurd that Isadora shared the same flaw. Logical because in so many ways, she was Gabriel, even if comparing his most hated enemy with the man he cared about more than anything in this world made him sick. And absurd because if he were listing people in order of how principled they were, Gabriel would be at the top, while Isadora Pope would be far down at the very bottom. Whatever moral code she lived by, it didn’t preclude snapping a helpless prisoner’s fingers.

At last, she shoved herself to her feet in an uncharacteristically jerky motion. She strode to him, hands tightened into fists. He flinched back before he could stop himself. But she didn’t hit him. After a few seconds, he realized the only one she was angry at was herself. She had won an argument with herself—or maybe she had lost. Either way, she didn’t look happy about it.

“Don’t try anything,” she warned. He held his breath as her hands went to the cuff around his left wrist. As her fingers brushed his skin, too close to his hand, a full-body shudder ran through him. He couldn’t suppress it. He knew she had seen his reaction, the evidence of the mark yesterday’s torture had left on him. Just a few small bones, and already his body feared her on an elemental level. She had already made him weak.

But she didn’t show any response. He wasn’t sure she had even noticed. Her fingers were busy with the lock around the cuff. She produced a tiny key and twisted, and the cuff fell away. The relief that flooded his body was better than sleeping in after a week with no sleep. It was better than a sip of water after days of desperate thirst. He couldn’t hold back a soft groan of sheer pleasure.

He stared at the bruised, reddened skin. His wrist was swollen to nearly twice its normal size. As the wave of relief passed, a fresh burst of pain swept down his arm, as if the increased blood flow had woken up a few sleeping nerves.

He didn’t care. She could have set him on fire, and it wouldn’t have mattered, as long as he was free.

He couldn’t believe she was really doing it. It had been a desperate gambit on his part. It never should have worked. But there was the cuff, lying empty in two pieces under his wrist. And there was Isadora, fitting the key into the cuff around his right wrist.

Of course she was doing it. It was what Gabriel would have done.

As she worked on the right cuff, he didn’t move, not even to test the newfound freedom of his left arm. When it fell away, he held himself perfectly still as she moved on to the ones around his ankles. He didn’t dare do anything that might bring her to her senses.

The final cuff loosened. The nerves in his ankles screamed back to life. He took a deep breath. The cuffs had done nothing to constrict his chest, but all of a sudden, he felt like he could breathe easier. A tightness around his diaphragm that had been there since Special Security had ambushed him was suddenly gone.

Isadora stood and tucked the key away. “Last night, I wanted to destroy you. I was… angry. You see, when I talked about the dangers of letting anger master you, it’s because that’s a subject I know about firsthand. I was angry that I didn’t understand you as well as I thought I should. A lot can change in the course of one conversation.”

Wraith flexed his wrists. He drew in a sharp gasp of pain. His stiff muscles moved like rusty hinges. He wondered if the damage was permanent. Not that permanent meant much, with his probable life expectancy.

He moved his ankles in small circles and hissed through his teeth. Could he stand on them? Probably. If he had to. After how long he’d spent sitting here with the cuffs cutting off his circulation, it wouldn’t be pleasant. But he didn’t need it to be.

“You won’t leave this place alive,” said Isadora. “You understand why, I’m sure. You’ve already lost this game. But you’ve been a worthy opponent for all these years, and now I can finally see why.” She walked back toward her chair, but didn’t sit down yet. She rested one hand on the back of the chair, her solemn eyes locked with his. “So let’s get to know each other, you and I. Then we’ll see about the rest. Maybe we can even find an arrangement that’s mutually beneficial… or at least mutually tolerable. And then…” A flicker of Gabriel’s bottomless sorrow appeared in her eyes. “Then I’ll do what is necessary. But I won’t be cruel about it. I’ll give you the respect a worthy adversary deserves.”

She pulled her chair out. Before she could sit, Gabriel surged to his feet. His ankles screamed in unison, shooting bolts of pain all the way up to his knees. His legs nearly buckled under him. He didn’t let them. He let the momentum of his near-fall carry him forward, toward Isadora, whose eyes went wide as—too late—she understood what she had done.

He drove one elbow into her gut, the other into her throat. He didn’t need hands after all. Not for this, at least. She hit the wall with a sickening crack.

She doubled over, choking. He drove his elbow into her torso again. After that, all it took was a shove, and she slid down the wall and hit the floor. He gave her a kick to the kidneys, like the guard had given him, and followed it up by driving his heel into her windpipe.

She drew in a wheezing, rasping breath. She stared up at him, not with fear or anger or anything else that might have made sense, but with a kind of wounded betrayal, like he had let her down.

“You heard that I’m civilized.” He kicked her in the gut. “You heard that I’m honorable.” This time, his kick landed just under her ribcage. “You heard that I’m just like you, and you leapt on the chance to believe it.” He smirked down at her. “I can play the part when it suits me. But I’d rather not.”

Quicker than she should have been able to move, she jerked a hand up and clawed at his left hand. She grabbed his broken fingers and squeezed.

His vision went white. He might have screamed. He couldn’t be sure. All he knew was that by the time he could think again, Isadora was slamming him back down into his chair and tightening the cuffs around his wrists.

She stood before him, sucking in strained gasps through her bruised windpipe. The ice in her eyes was gone. They blazed with the heat he had seen in her yesterday, but this time, the heat didn’t fade. Her fingers clenched and unclenched. He braced himself for the pain.

But she turned around and stalked out the door without a word, her fists clenched around the last shreds of her self-control.

45: Who loses stuff?

Gage is too focused and slow-going, and Danse is too organized, so it's definitely both of the ladies.

Florence and Isadora are both such fast-paced, thinking a mile a minute busy bees that they're doomed to misplace things.

Isadora watches all of her tools and materials like a fucking hawk, but leaves coffee cups, bottles, glasses, etc all over her work spaces. You have to scour her home to find all cups before doing dishes, and there's always one hiding in the pantry or something. Also has a habit of not properly sorting her laundry, and putting things in the wrong drawer.

As for Florence, also would never misplace anything important, but tends to lose track of her small items, like makeup, hair clips. Like, she'll touch up her blush real quick in the reflective surface of a metal cabinet, in the office archives, and instinctively put it down, forgetting it.

48: Who is more likely to get drunk?

Danse and Florence.

Danse canonically is a functional alcoholic, if not on his way to being one, and Flora often indulges in rum.

Isadora used to have a problem in college, so she's in Gage's camp of "not touching that shit." Whereas Gage is judgy, but tolerant of Florence's one or two glasses every so often, Danse's coping mechanism of choice is a major Plot Thing in he and Isa's relationship. She knows why he's doing it, how he works around it, justifies it to himself, and she knows damn well that it does not work for long.

Reyson looks at him. His eyes are warm, and Naesala imagines the curve of a white wing around his shoulders, or the splaying out of blond hair on a pillow. It should be enough to fill him with life but it is not.

He needs to fight. To present a united front against those who live in their false village. There is nothing here for him, and because of that, he believes that none of them deserve this light.

Naesala 9/10HP misses and misses Isadora 10/12HP with Phoenix Claws [Roll: 3 - 8 = -5, 1 - 8 = -7; -0, Isadora 10/12HP] Isadora is unable to counterattack.

He does not know why she is his target, but she is. The only one amongst them who stayed, still compelled by illusions. Reyson stays close -- because even his ghost thirsts for combat -- and Naesala attacks at a distance. Once, twice.

The both miss, and Naesala blames his lack of bones and his lack of hawk beak and talons. As ever, the comparison to King Phoenicis rings between his ears, and he falls back.

Isadora - It's all about where you want to kiss the person that makes a difference.

Finley - Romantic love is platonic love with a different end goal.

Madrigal - Platonic is steady warmth, romantic is open flame.

27. What causes them to feel dread?

Isadora - When Varric gets serious. She knows shit is about to happen.

Finley - The first inkling that he is heading towards a Broodmother. Whether scent or intuition.

Madrigal - The near-silent tink of a trap activating behind her. She is supposed to scout ahead while her team stays in safety.

Ahhhh thank you for the ask!! I'm gonna go for the ones I have the most fleshed out bc I have... way more than I should.

Wardens

Isadora Cousland - 7ft. Tall Warden-Queen. Alistair romance. Relies heavily on intimidation, especially with people she doesn't like, but is overall a good person. Once broke Thomas Howe's nose for calling her "Her father's half-qun bastard"-- proceeded to become fascinated with the Qunari and solidified her becoming a warrior. Tends to rush into things without a plan. Radically pro-elf and pro-mage. I made up a whole religion based on what we know of Avaar's religion and some irl Celtic inspired mythos for her bc I couldn't see her being fully agnostic but she can't stand the Chantry. Oghren taught her how to be a berserker. Sten and her are platonic kadans. Her favorite color is dark blue!

Michai Surana- As feral as Isadora, but keeps it more or less contained-- very good at The Game and knowing when to speak to his advantage. Incredibly intelligent and gets frustrated if he's outsmarted. Did call Cailin a shem to his face though. Alistair romance (he was my first bi mod) and helps his dear King in court. I have a whole tragic backstory about his first romantic relationship with Cullen that ended in tragedy (bc of the Kinloch stuff). In response, he decided to become everything Cullen would hate-- he outsmarts the desire demon and becomes a blood mage and then studies as an arcane warrior. Extremely close with Anders. Kieran is his son and he and Morrigan are actually very good friends who judge people together. His favorite color is goldenrod.

Jacobi Amell - Extremely shy and soft spoken spirit healer. Considers himself Wynne's apprentice. Immensely kind and empathic, cries easily when something is emotionally moving. Alistair and him are platonic soul mates. They are every bro meme. They are ride or die. Zevran marries Jacobi and basically gets Alistair as an eternal third wheel. Keeps Alistair a Warden and chooses to trust Anora. His favorite color is purple.

Hawkes

Garrett Hawke - Is Garrett really an OC? I feel like the standard purple mage Hawke is kind of his own character but he is a Fenris-mancer Force mage. Carver becomes a Grey Warden (and Isadora's right hand man!) and, while he sends Anders away, he spares him. Grows to regret that as Anders was part of his found family. His favorite color is also purple, based on his personality!

Ash Hawke - Oh Ash. Ash is non-binary mage who is starts purple but has an easy to switch to red temper. They are a force mage mainly. They were super close with Carver growing up and is fiercely protective of him. After they encounter Corypheous, they decide to leave Carver behind when they go to the Deeproads. Rivals Aveline as they blame her for Carver signing up with the Templars bc of her actions that barred him from the guard. Romances Fenris at first, but doesn't wait for him as they're not that kind of person. Ends up romancing Anders and approves of the Chantry explosion. Later, Fenhanders gets together around Post-Inquistion Era. Their favorite color is red.

Aurora Hawke - So. I tend to favor purple mage Hawke and Aurora is no different. Aurora is very good at pretending to be a proper lady like Leandra wants, but she's extremely raunchy and loud with her friends. Somehow, Sebastian falls for this-- though, they are a rivalmance that gets broken when Aurora spares Anders. Another Templar Carver timeline and you can see this and her featured in my fic Winter Rains if you like Canders. She does get left in the Fade. Her favorite color is a fiery orange.

Aingheal Hawke - I'm including her bc while she's less fleshed out, she's my warrior Hawke. Fiercely protective of her sister Bethany who ends up in the circle as well as her wife Merrill. While she sides with the mages, she kills Anders in an effort to keep them safe which... like none of my other Hawkes do. Her favorite color is black.

Inquisitors

Shiva Cadash - From hardened killer to long suffering mom friend. Dwarf dual-wielding rogue. Shiva was trained to be an assassin from birth and doesn't know how to really relate to people at first. Varric especially helps her learn to be a person. She grows close with Cole, Dorian, Varric, and Bull but Vivienne becomes like a sister to her, with Vivienne buying Shiva her first dress something she never had before. Vivienne does end up becoming Divine. At first she has a strange relationship with Solas who isn't interested in her that way and eventually she pulls away as she catches on to his "even though you're a dwarf" attitude towards her. To both her surprise and his, she and Blackwall fall in love. Her favorite color is emerald green.

Asaara Adaar - Asaara lies about his origin, honestly. While he is Tal-Voshoth, his Tamarassan discovered he was a sarebaas at a very young age. She steals him and another imekari who was always protective of him away and names them Asaara and Arug (Arug is actually my friend's Inquisitor!). She marries another Tal-Voshoth who becomes their father. Is smart and hates being considered stupid and will verbally rip people a new one. Everything about Asaara's story tends to be about first impressions vs reality. On principle, he likes Solas and despises Cullen when they first meet. Iron Bull and him don't exactly get along at first. Dorian and him get off on a rocky start being a Qunari and a Tevinter. So on and so forth. But as he gets to know everyone and see their true colors, his opinions change and he even falls in love with Dorian. His favorite colors are turquoise and mauve.

ANOTHER THING that i really love about writing victoria ; she feels.  a lot.  and she’s not afraid of feeling things !!  she’s not afraid to cry in front of her friends or family,  she’s not afraid of getting over-enthusiastic when she’s super happy,  she’s not afraid to admit when she’s scared or when she’s unsure !!  emotions are natural and healthy and it’s okay to express them !!

3 ships: ok in agreeing with u, my friend, and picking Carmen/Hennessy cause they are the best opposites attract. Also gonna say Mr. Gray and Maura cause I feel insane about them (“it was a glance” makes my brain make car crash sounds). This is such a hard question cause I don’t wanna cop out and say pynch cause duh that’s why we r all here. Maybe I’ll say clémence and tove cause 1899 really got a handle on me and I hope they do something lesbian next season.

For Madrigal, in her gardens, wrist deep in dirt. Especially if Lace is near and laughing at a joke she just told.

For Isadora, it's the Docks. She wants to taste saltwater in the breeze.

For Yuli, hidden away in the barn loft reading.
