Writing a fem character as a villain by making her abusive toward her children, have her obsess over a man, and be vain about her appearance, makes her a boring villainess.

are there any books you'd recommend for Isabelle of Angouleme?
Hi! I’m really not an expert on Isabella of Angouleme so I'm probably not the best person to ask for recommendations for her. Here are some I've heard of, though I haven't read all of them:
"Isabella of Angouleme: John's Jezebel" by Nicholas Vincent (King John: New Interpretations). I haven't read it myself but I've heard good things!
“Maternal Abandonment and Surrogate Caregivers: Isabella of Angoulême and Her Children by King John” by Louise J. Wilkinson (Virtuous or Villainess? The Image of the Royal Mother from the Early Medieval to the Early Modern Era). It focuses more-so on Isabella's tenure as queen, the period shortly after John's death, and her decision to leave England. Despite what the title may imply, it's sympathetic to Isabella and analyzes her situation in detail.
“Co-Operation, Co-Rulership and Competition: Queenship in the Angevin Domains 1135-1230” by Gabrielle Storey, her PHD thesis which collectively focuses on Isabella of Angouleme along with Empress Matilda, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Berengaria of Navarre. You can read/download it here, it's an excellent piece for all four women.
Sally Spong has written/is writing:
Isabella of Angouleme: The Vanished Queen (Norman to Early Plantagenet Consorts). You can see her conclusion here. It's nuanced and sympathetic, though not without its issues and pre-conceived notions.
Isabella of Gloucester and Isabella of Angouleme: Female Lordship, Queenship, Power, and Authority 1189-1220 (PHD thesis University of East Anglia).
“Isabelle d’Angouleme, By the Grace of God, Queen” by William Chester Jordan. You can read it online here, though I will say that it's ... very very questionable, accepting the sensational claims of lot of unreliable sources (including the idea of John abducting Isabella in a fit of uncontrollable infatuation) entirely at face-value.
“The Marriage and Coronation of Isabelle of Angouleme” by H.G. Richardson, available here on JSTOR.
Isabella has also been the subject of two complete French biographies till date:
"Isabelle d’Angoulême, reine d’Angleterre" (Aquitaine: 1998) by Sophie Fougere.
"Isabelle d’Angoulême, comtesse-reine et son temps (1186-1246)" [Actes du colloque tenu à Lusignan, 8 au 10 novembre 1996] by Gabriel Biancotto, Robert Favreau and Piotr Skubiszewski.
There are also a few blog posts about her (here and here) which may help if you want a brief overview of her life, though they can get a little sensationalistic sometimes.
Hope this helps! If anyone knows any others, please feel free to add on!
#I'm so sorry it took so long to answer! I'll add more if I find them#ask#Isabella of Angouleme#angevins#Sally Spong's chapter on Isabella is...complicated#It's detailed and sympathetic and I think it highlights some interesting aspects of Isabella's life#But it's also dependent on her own very fixed pre-conceived notions re Isabella's role as queen#Spong takes issue with other historians' observations about Isabella but...doesn't actually try to debunk the views herself?#It ends up seeming as though she's deliberately missing the point#And I think by reading things in the best possible light she ends up downplaying what may have been complicated experiences for Isabella#For example she disagrees with the idea that John was constraining Isabella's role by highlighting her ceremonial presence at court#But historians like Wilkinson HAVE highlighted this as well and emphasized how the 'ceremonial importance of Isabella's position as queen#consort and the dynastic significance of her maternity' were recognized and honored#But that does not discount or nullify the way Isabella's role does seem to have been constrained elsewhere by John#Namely her lack of control over her lands (many of which were granted away by John) and probable lack of access to queen's gold#Along with her absence from charters and the notable lack of prayers for her welfare save a single exception in 1204#Spong also disagrees with the idea that Isabella was excluded from her son's governance after John's death by highlighting her#presence at his coronation and (months later) at the peace talks between England and France#Which is - again - sort of missing the point??#*Yes* - Isabella's presence in both those occasions is certainly interesting and important when talking about her life#But that does not change the fact that Isabella seems to have been either remote or excluded from central government#She was not directing or working with the council in terms of governance but seems to have been at a distance from power#Which is made even more clear when we look at her charters: her witness lists were comprised of more or less politically insignificant#figures and included no men associated with her son's regency council#It's a striking contrast to the former roles that Empress Matilda and Eleanor of Aquitaine had for their sons#With those very dynamic precedents in place I do think Isabella's remoteness from her son's government is very notable#And I feel like that's...very important when discussing her decision to return to Angouleme?#But because Spong is keen to view Isabella's circumstances in the best light possible she sort of dismisses these discussions#& potential difficulties#It got rather frustrating to read

Do you think Isabella of Angouleme was a successful Queen Consort? That's a weighty question I know but there doesn't seem to be a ton written on her time as John's wife
well, i think the ideas of what constituted a good queen consort in the norman period is significant. isabella doesn’t seem to have managed lands in her own right until after john’s death, nor did she serve as a court hostess or the gentle right hand of the monarch’s power. she was apparently beautiful, but did not uphold gendered expectations for a queen (which was always contradictory, but certainly she was expected to be the best of women).
isabella was very young when she was married and crowned/anointed queen: probably around twelve, possibly as young as eight. so, she was not necessarily independently able to fulfil many of her functions as queen until later in john’s reign. at which time, we do know that she performed certain roles successfully — she was, for example, able to provide john with many legitimate children. she offered him a strategic marriage of international standing at the time of their marriage, although that aged poorly — through no fault of isabella’s. it’s difficult to find evidence of her actions during her time as queen. she made three awards to the religious for john’s soul after his death, but during their marriage there’s no mention of isabella during exchanges of wealth or lands unto the religious, nor in any charters or in his will; we find no prayers for her welfare minus one mention of her in an award to chichester cathedral in 1204.
beyond her age, it also seems like john did not really make it easy for her to be an active consort. nicholas vincent points out that john may have been pocketing wealth that was owed to his wife, disallowing her funds in her own right: “it remains a strong possibility that it was john, rather than his wife, isabella, who benefited from a levy that should by custom have passed to the queen”, and “on the two occasions were we read of isabella receiving gold, it came as a gracious gift from the king, rather than as hers by right”. likewise, it appears that she was, at times, cohabitating with isabel of gloucester (john's first wife) or with hugh de neville, allegedly cuckolded by john as he took his wife as a mistress: these may well have been demeaning, although this is only speculation.
on the other hand, john did make unnecessarily generous stipulations to add to isabella’s dower following the death of eleanor of aquitaine. he was careful to make considerations for her in the case of the loss of his french territories. in early 1203, she was at chinon, inexplicably without her husband, when alarms were raised that she was in danger of being attacked, resulting in john journeying to her rescue. the following year he wrote to the barons of angouleme “entreating them to hold to their oath to isabella, their ‘lady queen’ […] that they would hold their faith to her as their liege lady against all mortals”.
she doesn’t seem to have been the most popular, however — so this points to some perceived inadequacy. predominantly, the fault lies with john’s disastrous reign: isabella, as his proxy, was therefore equally open to criticism. she was blamed for things that are demonstrably not her fault — for example, chroniclers accused john of losing normandy for spending too much time in bed with isabella (who was in her minority at this time, and it appears john did not consummate the relationship until after the loss of normandy), and as steven church puts it: “it is a view that has no contemporary basis”.

also wait six is literally all about holding shit that happened five hundred years ago to modern moral standards and realizing “holy shit, this was not okay”. if you’re gonna engage with a piece of media where that is literally the premise of the entire show, you don’t get to opt out of applying that mindset to other moral issues that come up in regards to it’s subjects

21st June 1221 saw King Alexander II marry Joan of England, sister of the English King Henry III, at York Minster.
Princess Joan was the eldest legitimate daughter of King John and Isabella of Angouleme was born in 1210. She was originally destined to marry Hugh of Lusignan. This was politically tactful as Joan’s mother Isabella should have married Hugh but John virtually stole the bride – ensuring war with France and a deeply unpopular Queen of England.
In the end she married Hugh after John died and she returned to Angouleme see her daughter who been brought up in the court of Hugh and everything was hunky dory! Except she never told the English she was going home so now they weren’t happy! But a princess in the hand is worth a volatile queen dowager on the loose so Isabella got her dower back and England received it’s princess which was just as well because the council were already in mid negotiation for another marriage.
Joan’s new marriage was negotiated on a promise made as early as 1209 by King John to William of Scotland that there should be a royal wedding of a Plantagenet princess to the Scottish heir to the throne- Alexander. If Joan had not been retrieved, Henry III’s other sister Isabelle would have been in the frame to become Queen of Scotland. There had also been some suggestion that a Scottish princess might have travelled south. However, the originally negotiations begun by King John had become somewhat unravelled during the Baron’s War and it probably didn’t help that Magna Carta safeguarded the rights of the Scottish king – a fact which John ignored. After John’s death Henry III’s regency council slowly regained order once more. In 1217 Alexander, now King Alexander II of Scotland made his terms with the English. He kept hold of Tynedale and there would be a royal marriage to help cement the peace. Joan and Alexander were married in 1221 in York Minster. There was a thirteen-year age gap between the happy couple – Joan being all of ten-years-old at the time. Scotland was not a peaceful location at this time, was it ever back then?
Alexander’s hold on the throne was threatened by a number of families with claims dating to the reign of Duncan II. One of these families – the MacWilliams/Meic Uilleim- rose in rebellion once to often. It resulted in the family being hunted down – the youngest member of the family a baby girl was to have her brains “dashed out” on the market cross at Forfar in 1230, dashed out? Not my words Wikipedia’s words not mine, I would have went for bashed out. Look up “Meic Uilleim” for the full background.
Back to the marriage, which didn’t come without it’s problems. As was usual in these royal marriages the brides family usually provided the other family with loads of filthy lucre but Joan did not arrive laden down with loot. Alexander claimed that Joan should have come with Northumbria a fine dowry indeed.  (the most famous dowry in our history was the Northern Isles()
The English weren’t having any of it and for the first ten years of their marriage Joan was financially dependent upon her husband. It was only in later years that Henry III gave his sister several substantial manors for life so that she had an income which didn’t go into Alexander’s coffers – but we didn’t get Northumbria which caused a fair amount of grumbling and bad feeling between the brothers-in-law.
The other problem was that Joan failed to do what queens were expected to do – she did not produce an heir.
Joan died, childless, in 1238 at the age of twenty-eight during a visit to England. Mathew Paris noted in his chronicle that it was inappropriate for Joan to spend so much time away form Scotland – to modern eyes it looks as though Joan was not particularly happy in her marriage- but that is speculation and has nothing to do with the medieval concept of royal matrimony.
She was buried in Tarrant Crawford Abbey, Dorset rather than in Scotland by her own wish as stated in her will. Nothing remains thanks to the dissolution of the monasteries at the Reformation.
Alexander II died ten years later having married Marie de Coucy who duly presented him with a bouncing baby boy who was to become Alexander III. Read all about this marriage with added info about the background etc on this excellent article “The Jilted Princess"

Last week i was in a mode Tudor. I still don’t know why, but I was. And i thought of this manip, wich came from an old RPG I did with my best friends (it seems so long ago), where Henry and Katie was a couple.
Back then I was really not good in manips and with Photoshop even with photofiltre, so I abandon all thought of a manip between those too. In a way I’m glad that I never tried to do something back then, cause I would have not be as satisfied that I am now. Of course I still see some imperfection, but it’s normal since I’m not a professional.
To arrive at this final image it took me like 4-6 hours, it took me two hours just for the background, at the end I was going to just abandon everything, when it all fall into place (imagine my joy) . It was a really long processes but I don’t regret it. I hope you enjoyed it as a do.
As I was writing I though why not add the background for the characters, since I do have a story in mind with those characters. Henry still play Charles Brandon from the series, some fact was change about him, like is second wife and I did put back the two girls with never got the chance to see in the series, that he got with Mary his first wife (in the show, because in real life Mary was his Third Wife). Katie play a character name Isabelle of Valois (of Angouleme) or Isabelle of France, she is François 1er (Francis I) little sister.
She was sent aboard when she was six to live in England, where she met Henry Tudor (future Henry VIII), Charles Brandon etc.  She was raised alongside Mary, Henry little sister. She will go back between France in England, and have 5 children, 1 with Henry VIII, three with Charles Brandon and one with a duke. Even though she loved them the two first children will be mistake and product of force relationship. Of course the story is bigger than that and I have practically everything in writing. I just don’t want to bore you to dead so I’m going to stop here. Maybe I will do other manip or even post picture for the character I’m going to use.
If you want more of the story you can ask me.

You Might Be An Artist If…

You Might Be An Artist If…collects several years of her comic strips about the ups and downs of life in the arts. Her wry and relatable sense of humor animates every page, tying together flights of fancy, bitter grumblings, motivational pep-talks, self-doubt, procrastination, and inspiration.

15 June 1215 and 1203
It has been a long while since I have written any of my thoughts, and not today of all painful days, I do. Magna Carta. The charter of those precious barons. How dare they look to command their king, it wounds my pride and is insulting to God Himself. Very little every gets me through this day, save for my few supporters, copious amounts of drink and my thoughts of vengeance. The barons go too far and I will teach them not to cross me.
To turn to lighter topics, young Henry is crawling for the first time. Clever lad that he is and is has fascination for horses, it seems like only yesterday he was born. My brother Henry has already met him and they have bonded fast. Henry says that y son looks much like me, which, he does, but I see much of his mother too, especially his fondness for rings. Neither of us can wait to see him walk o even gift him with his first pony.
Isabelle has done well, motherhood suits. My dear wife has done well, a boy first. More than I could ask. Henry’s birth has healed the anger that was between us, which pleases me to say. I feel I must treat he to something, I need to show her how much I appreciate, now that I am in better moods. Henry has truly been a blessing to us, both for our sakes, and for the kingdoms.
But… every time I see Henry, I remember what I’ve done for him… Arthur… I have told Isabelle nothing, and Philip of France has said nothing of it either, and that, I hope it will remain. It is the past. That part of it cannot be healed. I must now look forward and to my son’s future, as well as health. More responsibility, more weight upon my shoulders and the crown.
Ioannes Rex Angliae, Dux Normanniae et Aquitaniae, Hiberniae
XV Junii Corsli, Hibernia. Anno Domini MCCIII
