((not a “review,” just some quick thoughts on loveless by alice oseman))

FINALLY!! finally finished reading loveless (it only took a couple years!) and all i can really say is i absolutely loved it. georgia warr, rooney bach, pip quintana, jason farley-shaw, sunil jha…i am holding each and every one of you so gently in my hands 😭

i was obsessed with the complexities of the friendships georgia had and formed throughout this story, as well as the hardships that come with figuring out your sexuality.

i’ve said it in plenty of posts before, but i’ll say it again: this story definitely hit closer to home for me than other osemanverse books have, which is why i’ve put off reading it for so long. but i’m so, SO glad i finally sat down and read it.

i really love georgia as a whole. her fanfic obsession, anxieties, interests, all of it! she’s such an interesting character and i can only hope alice will write more stories or even just drawings involving her and her journey of being aroace. it’s something that, outside of isaac from heartstopper, is so important to me. having a character so clearly talk about their journey being aroace has been so meaningful to me.

i think my only qualm with it thus far is the pacing felt a little odd at times and pip and rooney’s relationship (IN MY OPINION!!) felt a tad bit rushed. BUT this is all from georgia’s pov, so i can’t be too mad at it and obviously understand it from that perspective.

i have the same issue with how rooney’s mental health and struggles weren’t really talked about at length, but again, this is more of georgia’s story, so i’ll let it slide.

overall, i loved this book. i can get why some people don’t like it (i’ve seen a lot of people say that, for a book being about asexuality and aromanticism, there’s a LOT of romance, and i get it!), but i personally found it to be so refeshing to read about a character strugging through coming to terms with asexuality and aromanticism and the complexities and sometimes mourning that comes with it. leaving the ending not wrapped up nicely with a bow was so, so nice to me and i’ve always loved that about alice’s books; they always feel so human at the end of everything.

will definitely re-read it sometime!

FIRST OF ALL: ANON DM ME RIGHT NOW. i'm not joking i will literally just send you the AMT scripts. god willing, someday i will be able to turn them into something (i've begun to daydream about an AMT webcomic or graphic novel series; i think that would be the best way to preserve the mix of voiceover and the focus on dialogue, plus the idea of having those blorbos adapted into comic art makes me want to giggle and kick my feet), but for now i literally just have sixteen longass documents collecting dust and i will GLADLY let you see them. the one caveat is that you will need to remember that i wrote the bulk of AMT when i was sixteen human years old so there is definitely some cringe in there. everyone talks a little bit like they're in therapy. i fucked up rahma's arabic at least once. SECOND OF ALL: YES THEY ARE! i initially conceived of duodecimal as an AMT sequel (i was going to try to work in As You Like It elements as well--the never-finished lina chang companion piece that sometimes still haunts my brain is AYLI-focused; there's a reason their name is closer to rosalind than olivia). and then i was like. "wait. shit. fuck. i already wrote a podcast that i can't turn into a podcast. i can't do that shit twice. i will default to prose as usual." which i think was the right decision, because it really let me nestle into marshall's voice/head, but i was like... man, fuck it, i already have a setting called weird shakespeare high school, wouldn't it be funny if he kind of had a thing for indrajit. the more you know!

(mab, the theater director, appears more prominently in AMT, and both marshall's and lina's older siblings have roles! i once wrote a scene, purely for my own enjoyment, where marshall runs into isaac farley, AMT's hamlet, and has a brief gender realization that he instantly squashes.)

Ever since heartstopper entered and changed my life, I dream of decorating my room with everything related to osemanverse. Posters, novels, lgbt flags, quotes from osemanverse on the walls. I have HS 1, Loveless(my favorite) and Radio Silence. Yeah, Alice really helped me with to feel positive about my sexuality.

Angela Chen's book!!! I spotted it the moment it appeared on screen a few episodes back. I love that book and I'm glad it is so influential. This is the book for Isaac! This is his prom date, in a way.

Imogen and Sahar??? Call me intrigued. This makes me think of Alice mentioning that they'd like to add Isaac and Imogen to the comics, if possible, albeit in a small role. If this becomes a thing, then maybe around the end of the comics, Sahar can introduce Imogen as her gf.

Overall, I loved all of the season apart from episode 2 (affectionate). As in, episode 2 was good, but it was just upsetting which means it did what it intended. I'll just skip it more often. I was a bit surprised by the more open ending, especially since season 1 wrapped up so nicely, but then I remember that season 3 is already confirmed and it was confirmed before season 2 aired, so Alice knew that while writing this season. So with that in mind, I do think it is a great way to end the season and I'm already looking forward to season 3. I am a bit curious about the whole hospitalisation stuff. I don't want them to gloss over it (since I am convinced they're skipping all of Solitaire) (although Alice did say they want to add Michael to the show so we'll see). I wonder if the comic will end first, so that season 3 will also be last. They're ploughing through these comic chapters like mad, after all. Who knows. We will see.

I probably won't be able to watch all (or any) Heartstopper tomorrow which is a bummer so I blacklisted all of it in advance. Sigh.
