A Beginner's Guide to Communing with the Dead
A Beginner’s Guide to Communing with the Dead by suspiciousflashlight (@huntingthehaggis) Rating: Mature Word Count: 77k
Maybe it's the little girl whose disappearance turned into a murder, and whose murder turned into a cold case, and who has now apparently decided to move in with him. Maybe it's the unacceptable hole left in his life when his dumb best friend and partner in (the prevention of) crime decided to go and get himself killed. Maybe it's his brother, whose high-profile career and fantastic girlfriend and first-child-on-the-way are steadily leaving Dean in the dust. Pick one. Pick all of them. The why doesn't matter so much as the what, and the what is this: Dean is pretty sure he's going completely, certifiably insane. Sure, he hasn't started wearing all his clothes inside out, and he still showers on a regular basis (anyways, that's not crazy, just a little eccentric); but there's no getting around the fact that he just threw away his life, his career, and his reputation by dragging out his mom's old necromancy book and summoning a Class A Forbidden Entity to his attic. A cranky one, too. With horrendous bed-head.
Okay, my friends, if you haven’t read this one yet, drop everything now and click on that link!! Don’t wait around, just do it!
(And even if you already know the fic, I’m pretty sure it’s time for a reread, don’t you think? Since it’s always time for a good reread!)
Because this story, it’s simply something else.
It is told from Dean’s POV who is in a kinda dark place at the beginning. Either everything is going to shit around him or everyone is living their best lives without him and the gruesome murder case that lands on his lap one day surely doesn’t make things any better. Soon enough he finds himself at his wit’s end and in a desperate attempt to get justice for the victim he does something very, very stupid - illegally summoning an entity that should never be summoned, that is.
Dean isn’t really sure what he expected, but the blue-eyed, grouchy creature certainly takes him by surprise. Castiel seems devoid of emotions and alienates everyone in his vicinity without even trying which, of course, makes it extra hard for Dean to hide his true identity from his colleagues and family. Over time, however, he learns to appreciate Castiel’s uniqueness and Castiel in turn starts to change the closer his relationship with Dean becomes.
The worldbuilding of this fic just sucks you right in, transforming the whole thing into some sort of extraordinary urban fantasy crime novel. Thanks to Dean’s POV the writing style is witty and oftentimes hilarious in that special Dean sort of way and often enough you can’t help but laugh even in the grittiest of situations.
The development of Dean and Castiel’s relationship is simply captivating, both a nod to canon as well as its own special kind of insanity. It’s just addicting to watch those two slowly but gradually get their shit together.
And on top of that the actual case is truly riveting, keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole time.
So yeah, what are you waiting for? Happy reading 😁

Thursday Thoughts: This Is Our Wizardry
Diane Duane’s Young Wizards books meant a lot to me as a kid, and they still do. I’m rereading the series again for the first time in years (specifically the New Millennial Edition ebooks, which I highly respect Duane for creating). While writing this blog post, I’m halfway through the third book, High Wizardry, and I’ve realized that while I have changed in many ways over the years, my childhood self and my current almost-thirty-year-old self have one thing in common: we both think that this is the best book in the series.
That’s not to say that I don’t like the other books. But there’s something about the third book – the one with the computers, the one about the little sister, the one where they go to space for the first time – captured me like none other.
But why? Is it because Nita puts on a WALL-E t-shirt in the first chapter? I do love that detail – if you’ve ever interacted with me at all then you’ll know I love WALL-E with all my heart – but it’s more than just that.
Is it because I, too, am a younger sister and a too-bright-too-early bookworm, and so I related well to Dairine Callahan? It’s certainly part of it. I can be just as territorial as Dairine, and god knows I’m just as nerdy (if I could tell Dairine that I was a writer for the Galactic Starcruiser…!). However, my bookishness is much more Nita’s love of words and escaping into a story than it is Dairine’s desire to know so much that the world can never hurt you.
Is it because the Doctor shows up in this book? Nah, I didn’t know what Doctor Who was yet when I read this book as a kid. But, again, I do love that detail. Diane Duane really is one of us.
What truly grabbed me about this book is the idea that is first put into words in this book – an idea that is central to the worldbuilding in this series.
When the Powers offer wizardry to you, it is because there is a problem in the world that you are the perfect person to solve. You will need help to solve the problem, and you will receive that help. But the point is that the world needs you, as you are, here and now. You don’t need to be someone else. The world needs you – your mind, your heart, the decisions that you will make. All you need to do want to help, and to say yes when the call comes.
And this is true of all wizards, all the people who serve life and slow entropy. This isn’t a “chosen one” situation. Dairine isn’t “more” important than anyone else. Nor is Nita, nor Kit. But their importance is undeniable. This resonates with me as strongly now as it did then. I never wanted to be THE chosen one as a kid. I never thought that I was more important than anyone, and to this day, I hate the idea of someone else, anyone else, thinking that I see myself as superior to them. But even when I was little, I wanted to know that I mattered. I wanted to know that I was special and important in the same way that all people who do good in the world are special and important.
As an adult, I have learned the power of being willing and able to be the right person in the right place at the right time. I know I can make the world better for the people around me with my writing, with my thoughtfulness, or even just with my smile. I believe, more strongly now than ever before, that anyone who wants to can do the same. It’s a power we are all given, if only we choose to accept it. This is our wizardry.

TTNBD BLOG PART SIX
This blog covers chapters seven and eight of the story.
CHAPTER SEVEN – SUMMONING CIRCLES
Black Butler was one of my first fandoms. Not my first anime, by any means, but one of the first series of any kind that I consumed fan content for. I was new to the world of fanfiction back then, certainly not writing it yet. But some of the first fanfiction I read was Sebastian/Ciel.
The first fandom I wrote for was Supernatural. If you look at my works catalogue on AO3, you’ll see it’s the one I’ve written for the most as well. While it wasn’t my first fandom, I consider it my first in that it was the space in which I began to explore and hone my fanfiction writing abilities and specialties. I consider it my origin fandom, in a way. That series, its worldbuilding (or lack thereof) and its tropes make up the background from which I come.
So, when it comes to writing things about rituals and demons and other such things, I’m well-suited to the task. As I said in the last blog, I have an aversion to such things in reality, but in fiction, I’m old hat. I could say I researched ritualistic magic or the occult and took great pains to make it seem accurate to what may have been attempted in real life. But that would be a lie. When it comes to the ritual Lizzy and Sybil perform to summon Sebastian, I really just stitched together bits and pieces from stories I’ve read in the past, seen on TV or intuited from my own hypothetical actions were I in such a situation.
I have several 1899/1900 calendar pages on my wall in my writing space of the months in which the story takes place. It allows me to clearly and easily visualise the timeline of events and not lose track of them, all for the sake of maintaining proper continuity. I like to include references to actual events when appropriate. When Sybil mentions that the night of January 8th, 1900, is the first quarter moon, that’s true! I looked up the lunar charts for January 1900 and picked the soonest day when the moon was doing something definite so I could use it for the ritual. It’s amazing that the information about the phases of the moon from over a hundred years ago is available to us!
Sybil describes the balance of nature, how the sun and moon will be in the sky at the same time, and that will create harmony within the heavens. Lizzy refers to it as “a sort of homeostasis”. Homeostasis is a scientific term used in biology to describe the process by which a living organism maintains stability within itself while adjusting to varying external conditions. The term wasn’t coined until 1926 (I looked it up) but it’s a cool word and I wanted Lizzy to say something smart, because what’s the point of her going to medical school if she hasn’t become a bit of a nerd?
Also, it gives Sybil an excuse to mentally swoon. That, and the bit with the jam. I was trying to keep up the romantic tension and not let it get lost in the plot.
And then DRAT! They are interrupted by Simeon! He’s been out all night- doing what, we just don’t know. I won’t say it here but trust that in the final arc of the story, we’ll get more explanation about Simeon’s activities. Sybil is lying to her dad, thinking he wouldn’t approve of her frankly insane plan. And she’s right- he wouldn’t, but not for the reasons she thinks.
And now, it’s time for the BURNING BRIDES case! This is the case covered in the third episode of the second season of the Black Butler anime, entitled “Wench Butler”. A couple of readers have asked me how I came up with the case, and it reminded me how few people have watched the second season, or at least how few people remember it. I also have not watched it in many, many years, but I’ve taken so many pieces of it for this story.
In the episode, Ciel is assigned a new case by the Queen. There have been a few suspicious deaths- young women, all recently married, have been dying via spontaneous combustion- a truly horrific way to die, if you ask me. In her letter, the Queen mentions her “Spider”, and Ciel is intrigued, not knowing who this other investigator might be (it’s Alois).
Ciel and Sebastian eventually figure out that the victims all had their portraits taken by a pair of photographers- a married couple, the Turners. Margaret Turner, the wife, always wanted a passionate, romantic marriage, but hated her husband and her life and resented these women for their happiness and youth. So, she uses phosphorous powder, normally ignited to make the flash necessary for photography at the time to immolate her victims. When caught, she states that there was “a man with golden eyes” (Claude) who told her that the commission of these crimes would bring her happiness and that he would come to take her away from her sad life. She then commits suicide via the same method she used for the murders.
I kept most of this and just reworked some of the timing and conversations. There was a scene in the episode where Sebastian and Ciel run into Grell Sutcliff- I wanted so BADLY to have Grell appear again, I love her so much, but it was messing with the timing and tension, and it was just a whole extra scene to write, and I wanted to keep the story going. Also, trying to cram in every single character cameo I can think of would muddy the waters too much in my opinion. So, I left it out.
But I wanted to include the case itself. I always really liked the concept of it. And I specialise in re-working canon material. I’ve never been a huge AU person (i.e. high school AU, modern AU, coffee shop AU etc.)- I don’t write them (I think I wrote a Steve/Bucky coffee shop AU ONCE, for a request), and I don’t read them. Everything I write is within the canon of the series I’m writing for; I find that space much more rewarding to play in because there are rules you must stick to but still so many possibilities for what you can achieve and finding that balance is super satisfying. Things like soulmate AUs and stuff are my favourite though because again, they can exist within the boundaries of canon but make things so much more exciting in their own way.
Anyway, enough of my tangents. Back to the story. Ciel and Sebastian are investigating, being cute at a crime scene (what else is new) and they’re being watched. Ciel is not as good at being subtle as he thinks he is, so Claude was able to pick up his scent when Ciel was following him and Alois before- and they’ve decided to return the favour. But they’re also not as subtle as they think they are- cue a rooftop chase.
I like to think that Ciel is really fast. Like, I know Sebastian is fast- we see it all the time. But something about Ciel being slightly smaller makes me think that he might be able to move that much more quickly, though Sebastian will probably never admit it. I can’t wait for the later chapters of the story where Ciel begins to hone his skills. He hasn’t had a reason to properly learn how to move and fight- he and Sebastian have been living in peacetime, so to speak, since the end of TTEOE. But running fast doesn’t require a lot of practise, so Ciel catches Claude and Alois pretty easily.
Good God, Ciel remarked. Is that how I looked all those times you had to carry me?
No. You were far more distinguished.
Why do I get the impression you’re only saying that to spare my pride?
Sebastian looked facetiously wounded. You know I am incapable of telling a lie.
Ciel scoffed. I’ll believe it when I see it.
Just popping that in there to tell you once again how much I love writing banter for these two. It feels so correct, it practically writes itself, really.
I couldn’t decide whose POV this conversation should happen from, so I switched throughout. I try to be careful when I employ this technique- it can quickly make things a little soupy, for lack of a better term. But I wanted this exchange to have observations from both Alois and Claude. Alois is trying to be brave while internally pissing his pants, and Claude is falling into a quick and disgusting obsession with Ciel, which is also taken directly from season two of the anime.
I couldn’t resist having Ciel comment on Claude’s name. A Faustian demon having the last name Faustus is the most basic-bitch bullshit, and I would expect nothing less from Alois Trancy.
I loved writing Alois and Ciel’s exchange. They’re both such spitfires, stubborn and bitchy and uncooperative. The funniest part of the conversation to me is the fact that Sebastian and Claude are standing no more than six feet away, glaring daggers at each other and ready to throw down at a moment’s notice. I just imagine those wavy red lines radiating off of them like you see in an anime when a character is frustrated or angry.
If it wasn’t clear already, Claude is straight up lying when he says that Sebastian murdered Alois’s brother. This brings up another topic I wanted to discuss, which is the thing demons are always saying about how they don’t lie. I always just assumed that statement itself is a lie, and that’s the joke, right- lying when you say you don’t lie? Obviously if a demon’s master gives them an order to answer a question honestly, they would have to, but outside of orders, I think demons can just bullshit all they want. Especially demons like Claude, who are already disloyal to their masters and stretching the limits of their contract’s rules to the absolute limit In order to complete their own goals.
Claude telling Alois that Sebastian killed his brother is also straight out of the anime- he lies to Alois there too, so I don’t feel weird about doing it in this fic. Demons are creatures of treachery, after all, and will ultimately do what’s good for themselves in the end. The only question is, why would Claude lay they blame on Sebastian? What could he stand to gain? Questions, questions, questions…
As I said before, for a lot of this summoning ritual, I’m writing off the top of my head. The thing about salt is true, though- salt is a purifier/preservative, so it’s often considered to be symbolically protective. Pouring salt lines in doorways and windowsills will supposedly protect a household, as no evil can pass through the barrier. That’s a thing in Supernatural, but Supernatural didn’t make it up, is what I’m saying.
The way I imagine this ritual works is like: Lizzy focuses on Sebastian. Sybil reaches into her brain with her witchy powers, connects to the spirit network and just pulls really hard on the threads of the universe until Sebastian appears. That’s all pretty vague but I don’t really think the specific mechanics of the ritual matter all that much. It’s magic, don’t worry about it.
The rest of this chapter was one of the first things I wrote for this fic. Not the very first- The scene in chapter one with Lizzy at Ciel’s grave was first written in 2019 (!!), but the first draft of this chunk of chapter seven is hand-written (I handwrite a lot of my fic) and dated as May 2022. I hadn’t yet figured out what the circumstances were for Ciel and Sebastian even being in London, or why they’d been talking to Claude, but I knew I wanted them to be making out when Sebastian got yoinked. It’s just very funny to me. Someone commented that it’s good Sybil and Lizzy didn’t wait much longer to start the ritual, or Sebastian would have been buck-ass naked when he showed up, and that gave me a good laugh. I hadn’t thought of that.
I love Ciel making Sebastian jealous on purpose. They both like annoying each other, it’s an Olympic sport for them, but we all know that Ciel secretly (or not so secretly) loves how possessive Sebastian is. He loves being needed and wanted and owned and *screams* I love writing it. Makes my brain go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
It was important to me that Sebastian show up in Sybil’s attic looking like an angry wet cat, only not wet. Frazzled maybe. He just got dissolved and pulled through space and then reassembled in a strange environment. You’d be frazzled too. I feel like I succeeded with my sketch.
Now that Ciel is a demon, it’s fun to have Sebastian be the one in danger because there’s actually more Ciel can do to save him- though his inability to really fight or anything is going to be a problem that needs rectifying (we’ll get there). He is, however, perfectly capable of smashing through a window and scaring the shit out of Lizzy and Sybil.
I knew from the very beginning that I HAD to have the moment Lizzy finding out Ciel is still alive be a cliffhanger at the end of a chapter. Nothing else would have done it justice. She was gagged. Gooped. Face? Cracked. Wig? Snatched.
CHAPTER EIGHT – A SOUL NO LONGER LIVING
Another Simeon flashback! I love writing these. I’m very fond of Simeon, much more than I thought I would be, considering he was basically only created to be a vehicle for exposition and plot continuance. We also get more insight into Ada, who I also love. I’m actually chipping away at a spin-off one-shot about their first few days together after making their contract it’s literally just porn but that’s beside the point. It’s quite a different dynamic than any other demon/master relationships that are seen in canon- but if there are many demons running around in the world, it would stand to reason that their contracts and relationships would be as diverse as they are.
In truth, I have ideas/intentions for a few spin-off one-shots of varying lengths for this universe. Don’t worry, I’m going to focus on finishing the main story first! But I’ve never been this excited to expand on a fic before. It’s a neat feeling, and I hope my readers will follow me along on the journey, even though I’m really just happy to write these ideas down for myself!
Ciel bursting into the room, dropping a “surprise, bitch” on Lizzy and then immediately ignoring her in favour of Sebastian is just very Him. I wanted this whole scene to be from Lizzy’s POV because again, I love that outsider shit, and she’s the one with the most new and overwhelming thoughts at this moment. As if it wasn’t enough that Ciel is alive, she suddenly sees him and Sebastian kissing- it’s a wonder her head didn’t explode! But that reveal was less surprising to her. Ciel and Sebastian were always… weirdly close, so she can’t claim to be too shocked.
He approached her, and she flinched. She never would have before- she would never have thought to be afraid of him- he would never have struck her. Now, though, she wasn’t so sure. There was some power, some darkness radiating from him that made the basest part of her shy away.
When I wrote this, I had fully forgotten the scene early in the anime when Ciel does totally reel back to slap Lizzy and Sebastian has to stop him. It’s a small thing, but I was kicking myself about it when I realised my mistake- nobody’s perfect, I guess.
“The eyepatch you wore,” Lizzy said, and then felt quite stupid. “It wasn’t from an injury, then.” Tears began to burn in her eyes, threatening to spill over. “That was a lie as well.”
Here, at this moment, we get Lizzy’s emotional hang-up for the rest of the arc- the fact that Ciel lied to her. For the record, I didn’t even expect her to care this much. She just would not let it go, even when I tried to write her letting it go. Sometimes characters and stories develop a mind of their own, and you have to follow their lead until it comes to its natural conclusion.
I know a lot of readers were annoyed by Lizzy’s unwillingness to just get with the program already and believe me- I was also annoyed! But I also felt that it was more accurate to her character, and I wasn’t going to sacrifice that for the sake of making readers a little less annoyed. Sometimes characters are gonna do stuff you don’t agree with. That can be interesting. And sometimes, the consequences of their stupidity or stubbornness can be all the more satisfying as a result!
Thankfully, before things could devolve into even more arguing, Simeon shows up and the boys quickly bounce. Sybil telling Simeon that it was a bird that broke the window is another pseudo-reference to the fact that Ciel, to me, is a phoenix. He’s the big bird lol.
Alois is of course enchanted by the idea of immortality- if anyone would be looking for a way to weasel out of having to give up their soul, it would be him. Claude, of course, has no intention of ever doing something like that. He’s anti-love and anti-fun in general, to be honest. What a buzzkill.
I’m not going to go too into detail about Hannah’s revelation about this weapon, as there are things about it that have yet to be revealed in the fic itself. I’ll leave that for later commentary blogs. Rest assured, this weapon is bad news.
In a comment on this chapter, someone pointed out that at the moment Alois and Claude are discussing mating bonds and such, Ciel and Sebastian are back at their hotel having emotional, life-affirming floor sex. The juxtaposition of those two images made me laugh. If this was a show, you could have a hard cut between Claude being like “Romance is dumb” BOOM Ciel and Sebastian fucking. It’s hilarious to me.
Anyway, this scene was so self-indulgent to me. Sometimes you just gotta write stupid mushy shit, okay? They’re so in love with each other *cries*
“How can you say such things?” he looked at Ciel mournfully. “How can it be that I’ve failed you so, that you believe these lies about yourself?” He reached up and pushed matted, wet strands of hair away from Ciel’s eyes. “You have proven time and time again to be my saviour and my solace. You are and always will be the very reason for my existence- the purpose for which I live and breathe- whether you are of any use to me or not.”
What’s that meme that’s like “Do you like soul mate AUs or do you just struggle with your self-worth and are obsessed with the idea that someone could love you no matter what”? It’s me. I have exposed myself.
I think Ciel likes pain, like, in a sex way- at some point, all the shit he went through must have crossed wires in his brain- but in this scene, it was more about his need to feel something, anything, to remind him that he and Sebastian were both alive, and real, and safe and together. And it affected him so deeply that his blue flames came back, even for a second!
I didn’t intend for Ciel’s powers to be a part of the story, but I realised early on that Ciel needed some kind of internal conflict to give him a character arc as well as the external conflict of solving murders etc. I’m excited to get into it properly in the final arc of the story.
Sebastian, a demon, reciting scripture will never not be amusing to me.
“And they shall take of the blood and strike it upon the two side posts and on the upper doorposts of the houses… for I will pass through the land of Egypt in the night, and I will smite all the firstborn, both man and beast.”
The passage he is quoting is from the Old Testament book of Exodus, paraphrasing verses from the twelfth chapter. It’s the command God gave to Moses for the Hebrew people, which led to what became the first Passover. The Hebrew people were in slavery in Egypt, and God sent the ten plagues of Egypt, and the final plague was that God passed over the land of Egypt, and every firstborn human and animal died, all in one night. This is what made Pharoah finally break down and let the Hebrews go.
The Hebrew people themselves were protected from the plague because they sacrificed a lamb and used its blood to mark their doors so God would know they were his people and not harm them when he passed over. Thus, the term “Passover”.
Sebastian, using his blood to mark the walls and keep them safe, found it a cheeky, fitting reference. And yet again, he STOLE something.
Cambion is indeed a term for a being who is half-demon, half-human. The term originates in European mythology and was originally used interchangeably with the word ‘changeling’, a mythological creature that replaced a human child, but later came to mean a demon-human hybrid. The most popular use of the term is the creature from Dungeons & Dragons, a humanoid creature with bat-like wings and horns and a devil’s tail.
Obviously, Sybil doesn’t have any of those physical attributes, but her demon heritage is what makes her capable of seeing the dead, as well as her intuitiveness and her ability to successfully perform rituals like the one that summoned Sebastian despite the fact that she’d never attempted anything like it before in her life. Witches in general are just humans with an affinity for the spiritual, but Sybil has heightened abilities that can only be attributed to her non-human genetics.
I ended this chapter on another sort-of cliffhanger- I hate writing normal endings to scenes, it always feels awkward, so I always end up doing this haha. I hope it doesn’t get too annoying or boring. Like right now, for instance, me not knowing how to end this blog post.
Okay, bye, see you all next time!

125 celebration Part 1-Best manga
in no specific order
1-A girl on the shore
A Girl On the Shore is a very special manga, it's short, reaching around 20 chapters, but this manga is so incredibly dense and holds so much within those 20 chapters. It tells the story of these two kids, well, mainly a young girl, but the boy plays a pretty important part. The two are growing up and experiencing all the troubles that come with maturing both physically and emotionally in a town that holds nothing but misery for them. It deals with serious themes just as delicately as they need to, almost perfectly showing how adolescent relationships can hurt, how suicidalality and depression weave into the very town they live in. A Girl On the Shore is just incredible, words cannot really describe how I feel about this series but I just need you to know that this fucking destroyed me as I read it. It is a series that hit very close to home, and I find it beautiful in how organically it is able to display the events that take place.
2-Yomawari Sensei
Yomawari Sensei is a series of vignettes, this old night patrolman and teacher of a night class tells stories about kids he met in his line of work. Almost all of those kids got left behind by society at some point, he helps addicts, suicidal teens and kids, children stuck in abusive households and those that experience severe bullying by peers, just to name a few. The teacher, Mizutani, tries to save all of these kids from their circumstances, he lifted so many out of bad situations, but he’s also lost so many, 42 real children if my memory serves. A few of the losses detailed in the manga I think will stick with me forever.
One is about a young man with epilepsy, he was never able to hold down a job because he’d eventually have a seizure and end up a liability. That boy’s dream was to be a chef if my memory serves right, and Mizutani was able to get him help and secure medication for his condition, with that the boy was able to secure a job and start working, either right before or soon after the boy achieved his dream, he stopped taking his meds for one night, because they made him sick, the boy then suffered a severe seizure in his sleep and choked to death in his sleep.
Another one deals with a recovering addict, I believe we come back to this boy many times throughout the series. He’d started dealing at some point and eventually turned himself In at the advice of Mizutani, and once he got out of jail he tried to live a normal life again, but his friend got him back into that life. Eventually after a series of dark events the either boy’s friend or the boy himself overdoses in their bathtub. After that the victim’s mother makes a heart wrenching call to one of the characters that I can’t seem to remember, this one was hard to read.
And finally the most tragic of them, something I don’t want to spoil so I won’t. But it’s a story that pops up throughout the series. There’s this young teenage boy and his blind mom, the boy ends up joining a biker gang and bad things happen. The boy was born in the aftermath of rape, and it was always just those two against the world, something that you can only expect to end in tragedy.
Overall Yomawari Sensei was an incredible read and it’s both and incredibly produced and important manga.
3-Girl’s last tour
Girls last tour deals with the story of two girls traveling the wastes of a now extinct industrial superpower. I honestly don’t believe I am smart enough to get everything out of this manga. It’s got incredible depth in worldbuilding and thematics, it’s got this all consuming feeling of this odd emotion I can’t describe throughout the series. The art may not be anything amazing technically wise, but the direction is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, it helps drive home the idea of these two small beings of warmth thriving in this cold steel hell that’s perfectly streamlined. And how that life will continue to thrive in spite of all that tries to keep it down.
4-Homunculus
There’s so many reviews made by much more talented than I about this work so I won’t waste your time too much on it. This one is probably my most basic best manga pick. This manga deals with some really interesting philosophy in what it means to be human and how we see the world. It’s a good read I would recommend.
5-Rainbow
Rainbow tells the story of a group of young boys in postwar Japan that have all ended up in a juvenile facility for one reason or another. They get abused inside and once they get out they vow to make the doctor pay for his crimes. And eventually do, from there all of the boys go on to live their own lives after the war, whether it be in the sdf, becoming a loaner, a pro boxer, or a singer, they all find new ways to live away from the old society that once held them down. There’s a plot twist with their older brother figure that’s metaphorically the changing of the old Japan into the New age Japan for the boys. And overall this series was just a great time to read and it too is dear to me

This is really dumb so feel free to ignore, but my brain is now curious as to what the chance of death would be if the coffee shop villain tried, uh, flirting with Shadow?
That’s really dumb and my brain impulsively conjured that thought after the whole debacle of the first anon trying rizz and then seeing a different non-anon ask about coffee shop villain and is more so a brain s**t post (not sure what the clean term would be. Garbage post?) my brain made up.
Anyways, question somehow still related to that whole (for me, fairly entertaining) debacle, where would Thomas (the human companion? Companion probably isn’t the right word but I’m blanking) be during all of this (the deadly magic assassin standoff/rizz show)? Off to the side helping prepare funeral rites or at the scene trying to mitigate damages?
All of this is just a little bit of rambling and non-serious asks for funsies (I hope they’re considered funsies and aren’t uncomfortable. Feel free to not answer the ones that make you feel like that), so I hope this isn’t too annoying.
Anyways, have a lovely day/night and take care of yourself and hydrated and well fed and all that jazz (and I will probably later ask more about worldbuilding and stuff if you’re fine with that. I don’t know why I’m including that, my brain has the urge to share all my thoughts okay leave me alone-) :)
(Also, if the whole rizzing attempt is still going on, I’m still rooting for you anon! I wholeheartedly believe in your attempt and indeed will be watching from a safe distance with a coffin on standby. Okay I’ll stop mentioning it unless there’s an update since I don’t want to be repetitive or annoying or anything)
-idk
Great questions! Surprisingly, I think the coffee shop villain might actually stand a small chance of successfully flirting with Shadow. I say that because
1: he's got super dangerous, deadly powers like she does, and 2: he's got a sharp wit and dark sense of humor as well, which Shadow shares. He is also very capable of standing up for himself and fighting when needed, which Shadow would admire (she respects powerful people who aren't a pushover)
As to where Thomas would be during the whole rizzing situation-- he'd definitely be on the sidelines getting the funeral ready. Despite how much he doesn't like Shadow killing people and often gets in her way to stop her, with tensions so high, he probably wouldn't want to risk intervening in whatever's about to go down because he might get caught in the crossfire. He'd probably reluctantly let Shadow handle it her way -- with violence, if she decides the person flirting with her isn't worth her time.

FORTUNA
Let’s get this out of the way: FORTUNA is the longest MSPFA on the site, that isn’t just the full translation of HOMESTUCK. It is about 7000 panels long, and it is the reason why I had the “one year rule” stipulation to begin with to make this more manageable to me. It is one of the most intimidating things on the website, mainly because it also has a website mirror that seems to be updating to this day? I have no idea what to expect besides the vague idea of a more mechanics-based SCI-FI story, so…here goes, I guess. I’ll be reading the one on the website, btw.
This one REALLY wants to sell that it is a game, complete with fake start up screen, reset, and a framing device about trying to play some game somebody you knew gave you. This truly feels like I am playing a visual novel, except I’m not actually making any of the choices, but I am reading all of the dialogue. But I mean, aren’t all MSPFAs kind of Visual Novels, if you think about it? Yes. Also, the visuals are pretty good, the crayon scribbles are a very charming artstyle to employ in this webcomic.
Right. This fanadventure is making me remember why the heck I don’t especially like some SCI-FI much, because. Man. Is there sure is a lot of text dumps about Aliens that I haven’t yet met, given to me in a very bland style. Like. I’m impressed that there’s a lot of worldbuilding but like. Cool the jets, fake-game.
Uh oh. Some of the pictures might be broken. Which, uh. Considering there’s no prose under the panel now. Might be…just slightly problematic. Got to say, though, I’m loving this Apollo Guy. Gives me big “Flowey” Vibes, And Those Are The Vibes Of Someone That I Like To Hang On With, on A Narrative Sense.
Also. I just realized. This mirror has like. Literally the forum message users talking to each other. Which is cool for a mirror to do, to see people getting into the roleplay situation of the entire scenario. (Also. One literally quotes Doc Scratch? Which is certainly a trip. To behold).
Okay so. I guess that all that stuff I said about it being too much info and stuff? I lied. This Fanadventure RULES. Sorry about all that stuff I said above. I guess it still applies as my thoughts as I’m reading it, but definitely once you get into the groove of how these things are supposed to go, it’s a good ride.
The reader being like…an actual character, or rather the multiple throngs of readers on this fanadventure gives this one…what’s the word…an ask blog vibe? Ask Blogs are all fine and dandy, don’t get me wrong; but it’s uh…it’s not really the best medium to tell a story through, at least to my tastes.
I think Fortuna’s a really good fanadventure to check out, all things considered. I liked the segments when there’s more story, and I did not like the part where there’s more audience interaction. Honestly, Audience Interaction is so fickle to read as an archival reader that you have to really know what you’re doing (see: Hussie) if you want to do it, or you just want to make a story solely for Serial Readership. That’s kind of what I’m finding out here. In summary, and in conclusion: Go check this one out.

It's Not Flattery
A Prequel to The King of Mirokan Series by Kerwynlar
Nate and Lawrence talk about whether or not they should get married.
No kink in this one, just a lot of talking. Character building, some worldbuilding. This story is for anyone who liked the other installments in the series and wants to know more about the characters. And also to get a bunch of my head canons about them written down somewhere.
3,296 words.
Read it below or on AO3.
~*~
Nate fiddled with his cufflinks as he looked out the window of the car. He had been stymied standing in front of his closet in the hotel room as he prepared for this evening. Was a tie appropriate for a meeting (date?) with a king who may or may not want to marry you? In the end, he figured that because he had only ever seen King Lawrence in a three-piece suit, that was pretty good guidance. He had gone with a dark gray suit and a vivid purple tie and pocket square.
He forced himself to take a deep breath. He shouldn’t be nervous. He had dined with King Lawrence plenty of times. They had had plenty of private discussions before, and they liked each other. This was just like any other visit to the palace.
Except it wasn’t.
The car stopped at the gate and the driver rolled down his window to present his ID to the guard. The guard examined it and glanced at Nate in the back seat. Nate gave him a wave and a friendly smile. The guard handed the driver’s ID back, then signaled for the gate to open for them.
Nate and King Lawrence were having dinner to discuss the possibility of getting married to seal the treaty between King Lawrence’s country of Mirokan and Nate’s homeland of Vyrian. Nate’s older sister, Queen Amelia of Vyrian, had insisted that King Lawrence wanted to marry Nate.
“You said yourself that you’re friends with him, Nate. You’re a prince, you’re hot, and you get on well with him. It’s common knowledge that he’s gay and he doesn’t need a spouse to bear children. Why wouldn’t he want to marry you?”
Nate hadn’t had a good answer to that beside the fact that everyone who interacted with King Lawrence fell in love with him, at least a little, and Nate had been no exception. It just seemed impossible to Nate that after a lifetime of bracing for an arranged marriage that, best case scenario, might be tolerable, that marrying Lawrence was really an option. Nate couldn’t bring himself to believe that Amelia was reading the situation right and that marrying him was actually what King Lawrence wanted.
A servant was waiting in front of the palace and opened Nate’s door for him the second the car stopped.
“Prince Nathaniel. Welcome, sir.”
“Thanks,” Nate said as he got out and buttoned his suit jacket.
“If you would care to follow me, sir?” The servant gestured towards the large doors.
“Lead the way.”
The servant escorted him to a luxuriously furnished sitting room that, Nate noticed, had a small dining table set next to the window. King Lawrence was standing close to a pretty woman in a skirt suit and looking at something on the tablet she was holding.
The servant cleared his throat. “Pardon me, Your Majesty. Prince Nathaniel is here.”
King Lawrence looked up quickly and gave a somewhat bashful smile. “Prince Nathaniel, thank you for coming.” He turned to the woman. “Renee, we’ll have to finish another time. Solomon will let you know when I’m available.”
“Of course, Your Majesty.” The woman took a step back and bowed to him, then turned and bowed to Nate as well before hurrying out.
King Lawrence moved closer, his blue eyes meeting Nate’s own. “I’m sorry, my staff is trying to fit all of my regular responsibilities in around my meetings with your sister. It seems that they’re snagging every available moment.”
He really was quite handsome, a little voice spoke up in the back of Nate’s head. Maybe not conventionally attractive the way Nate himself was, but certainly striking. “Ah, please don’t apologize, Your Majesty. I know Amelia is facing down a mountain of paperwork back at the hotel right now.”
King Lawrence chuckled. “I’m glad it’s not just me. Would you like a drink?”
“Yes, please,” Nate said with a smile. This close he could see a few threads of silver in the king’s blonde hair. Nate knew King Lawrence was in his twenties - only two or three years older than Nate - but taking the throne of an active monarchy right after graduating from university must have taken a toll.
“Gin and tonic, right?” the king asked.
Nate blinked. The King of Mirokan knew his drink order? “Um, yes, thank you.”
King Lawrence nodded to the servant, who was waiting beside the door, and the man exited, leaving them alone.
“Will you sit?” the king gestured to a nearby sofa.
Nate thanked him and sat, and the king took a wingback chair beside him.
“So,” Nate said, “it sounds like things are going well with you and Amelia.”
“Yes.” King Lawrence smiled. “Your sister is a very intelligent woman, and I believe she shares my sincere desire to see the economies of both our kingdoms grow. I’m confident the treaty will ultimately be good for both of us.”
“Amelia-”
Nate was cut off by the servant entering again with two drinks on a tray. He handed the king a glass of red wine and then served Nate the gin and tonic, bowed, and left.
Nate’s mind raced. Should he toast to the success of the negotiations? Was that too loaded? Something about an enjoyable evening? Maybe that was too forward? He raised his glass. “To your health, Your Majesty.”
King Lawrence raised his glass as well with a small smile. “To yours.”
They sipped. Nate’s drink was well-mixed, with lots of lime. He nodded at the king’s glass. “Do you have an opinion on what should be considered ‘Mirokan’s finest’?”
Unexpectedly, the king chuckled. “Shall I tell you a secret?”
Nate’s eyes widened. He had no idea where this was going. “Sure…”
King Lawrence peered at him. “I’m serious. You must give me your word that you will not tell another soul.”
What could this possibly be about? “Of course, Your Majesty.”
“While Mirokanian wine will always be served at my table and to every guest in my home,” the king’s eyes twinkled, “when the contents of my glass are not under scrutiny, I generally drink Otamsian wine.”
Nate felt his jaw drop. “No!”
“You see why I swore you to secrecy.”
Nate laughed. “I do! My god, Your Majesty! The scandal if this ever got out!”
“Exactly.” King Lawrence leaned back in his seat, and swirled what Nate now understood to be his glass of foreign wine. “Mirokanian wine is so fruit-forward. I prefer a drier, more mineral taste.”
Nate shook his head and took another sip of his drink. “How do you even manage to get it into the palace without arousing suspicion?” he asked.
“Every new year I gift the Otamsian ambassador a few wheels of Mirokanian cheese, and he sends me a case of wine. He knows I enjoy it, but he probably thinks I give most of it away, rather than hoarding it for myself.”
“Well, my lips are sealed,” Nate said, feeling warm. “I’ll never tell.”
“I appreciate that, Nathaniel.”
It occurred to Nate that his name sounded quite nice in King Lawrence’s accent and he thought about how he could be hearing that quite a lot.
When they moved to the dining table shortly thereafter, they were quickly served a first course of soup.
“I suppose,” King Lawrence said after they had both taken a few bites, “that we should talk about it.”
Nate swallowed, feeling awkward. “Yes, Your Majesty.” He took a breath. He wasn’t Amelia’s most trusted diplomat for nothing. He could do this. An easy smile came to his face. “My sister thinks you want to marry me.”
The king peered at him, looking worried. “Prince Nathaniel, please know that the treaty between Mirokan and Vyrian will happen regardless and is in no way contingent upon any relationship between you and I. As I told Queen Amelia, I am committed to moving Mirokan towards a more open trade policy and I think in general this has broad support domestically. There are, however, factions in parliament who fear this development. While they don’t have enough support to block me, they can - and likely will - make my life much more difficult when I go through with lowering tariffs.
“One thing I have considered to ease their fears is a more symbolic gesture to show friendship and cooperation between the nations, to try to combat cries that Vyrian will pillage Mirokan’s economy. And a marriage between you and I could be that symbolic gesture. However, if that prospect is distasteful or at all unpleasant to you, please rest assured that we can finish dinner and never talk of this again. Queen Amelia and I will come up with some other symbol of friendship.”
“Oh, Your Majesty,” Nate said quickly, “there’s no distaste at all. I’m honored that you would even consider me.”
King Lawrence grimaced. “You’re not here as a diplomat, Prince Nathaniel. There’s no need to flatter me.”
Nate reached across the table and placed his hand on the king’s wrist. “I’m not flattering you.” The king met his eyes again and Nate continued. “That is truly how I feel.” Nate swallowed and continued, keeping his hand in place. “This conversation is very important for both of us… maybe one of the most important in our lives, to say nothing of the impact on Mirokan and Vyrian. If I give you my word that I will be honest and open with you here, will you do the same?”
King Lawrence took a breath and swallowed, then nodded. “I will. But. It is very important to me that you not feel pressured.”
If the king’s honest feelings might lead Nate to feel pressured… Nate’s skin prickled with warmth and he considered kissing the king’s hand but thought better of it. He withdrew his own hand reluctantly and picked up his spoon again. “I appreciate that, Your Majesty. Thank you.”
They both took a few bites of soup.
“Wouldn’t the more reactionary elements of parliament see you marrying me as Vyrian stealing you away from some sweet Mirokanian girl?”
The king laughed. “I’m fairly certain my entire kingdom has known I’m gay since I was 17.”
Nate kicked himself internally. He knew that, but just hadn’t been thinking about it when asking his question. “A sweet Mirokanian boy then?” he amended with a smile.
“Well it’s not like you’re going to take me away to Vyrian. If anything, I’ll be stealing you away. My mother was Mirokanian but a foreign royal is generally considered an acceptable spouse. Particularly if the marriage is political.” King Lawrence met Nate’s eyes again. “You’ve um … suggested in the past… but we’ve never actually discussed…”
Nate raised his eyebrows. “My sexuality?”
The king nodded.
Nate chuckled ruefully. “I’m a second son, Your Majesty. I’ve always known that I would likely be called upon to make a political marriage. And given that most monarchies use a standard hereditary succession, the odds of me being required to marry someone with a womb were high…” Nate trailed off, looking at King Lawrence’s hands and wondering if he could touch him again. Nate shook himself and cleared his throat, moving his eyes back to the king’s face. “I’ve had … dalliances. With people of various genders. Beyond that, it’s always seemed safest to wait and see who I would be presented with.”
The king looked… sad?
“I’m so sorry, Nathaniel.”
Nate frowned, not comprehending. “For what? Why?”
“That you had that little self-determination.”
“How can you of all people say that?”
It was King Lawrence’s turn to look confused. “What do you mean?”
“You’ve been the heir to the throne since you were, what? One year old? I could have had my choice of careers but you were always going to be king.”
“Yes, but at least in Mirokan that didn’t have to dictate who I could love.”
“Didn’t it? I mean, we’re here discussing a political marriage.”
“A political marriage that neither of us is being forced into. If we do this it will be because we’ve both agreed that it’s what we want.”
Nate smiled at him and nodded.
They both finished their soup and their bowls were quickly replaced by plates of fish and vegetables. The meal was perfectly cooked but bland and Nate made ample use of the small dish of spicy sauce that was served on the side.
“So, the adoption thing…” Nate said.
The king looked up from his meal with a charming smile. “You mean the sensible and enlightened way that my kingdom has handled the succession of the monarchy for hundreds of years?”
Nate chuckled. “Um, yes. That. When are you supposed to do it?”
Nate was vaguely aware that the heir to the throne of Mirokan had to be adopted and that the idea was to make sure that the monarch was “of the people” so they would never consider themselves above their subjects but they would also be raised and educated from their earliest days to rule. That Mirokan’s monarchs were not required to consider fertility when marrying was, as far as Nate was concerned, an added benefit.
Nate knew that King Lawrence had two older siblings who were his parents' biological children, who were prohibited from taking the throne. He also knew that the king had only been adopted when his parents were much older, and the prior king had died when Lawrence was just 15. Mirokan had been ruled by a triumvirate of regents for six years until Lawrence was coronated.
“My spouse and I will become eligible to adopt after we have been married for a year.”
“What if you had been married before you took the throne?”
“The year would have started at my coronation. The idea is that the heir to the throne needs to be raised by two people who are used to each other and the responsibility of rule. In theory that leads to a stable and positive parent-child relationship that adequately prepares the heir for the throne.”
Nate noted the ‘in theory’ phrasing and the slight chill in the king’s tone. “You’ve always given the impression of being more than adequately prepared,” he said gently.
The king smiled. “Thank you, Nathaniel.”
Nate decided it was best not to ask about King Lawrence’s own adoption. There would likely be plenty of time for that.
“So if we were to get married…”
The king gave him an evaluating look. “On our first anniversary we would become eligible to adopt my heir. That means that if a child younger than two years old is orphaned or abandoned, the Child Welfare Services are instructed to notify the palace. An investigation is then conducted to confirm that the child has no living relations able to care for them. If that is the case, we would adopt them.” The king paused. “How… how would you feel about adopting rather than… fathering children?”
“I think that would be wonderful,” Nate said sincerely. “The biological part of parenthood isn’t important to me. And you’re right that the way Mirokan handles succession is enlightened. I would be proud to be a part of it.”
King Lawrence cleared his throat and looked at Nate from under his lashes. “Still not flattering me?”
Nate pursed his lips. “Have a little faith, Your Majesty, please.”
“Right.” The king took a breath. “Sorry.”
Nate gestured this away and took another bite of his food. “You said ‘children’ not ‘child’. You’re your parents’ only adopted child, aren’t you?”
King Lawrence nodded. “But that’s mostly because they were so much older than planned when they got me and I think my mother harbored some hope that an exception would be made for her biological children and my brother would be permitted to inherit. Before my parents, most monarchs adopted at least two children. ‘An heir and a spare’ as it were. I… um, I would like at least two. Probably close in age. Would that… be agreeable to you?”
Nate reached out to touch his wrist again. “Very agreeable. I’m two years younger than Amelia, and our sibling, Aster, is two years younger than me. All three of us have always been close.”
“That sounds nice,” King Lawrence said, and Nate thought he detected some wistfulness in his tone.
“Do you think you could be happy living here? In Mirokan,” the king asked after they had both eaten a little more.
“I assume I’d be able to visit home sometimes-“
“Yes, of course!”
“I like Mirokan very much,” Nate told him. “And I’ve always felt comfortable in your court.” He wiped his mouth with his napkin, and fixed the king with a serious look. ”Please don’t ask if that’s flattery.”
King Lawrence chuckled. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”
Nate smiled at him warmly, then continued. “I am used to traveling quite a lot on diplomatic missions for Amelia. I know you have your own diplomatic apparatus, and I don’t assume that would be my role, but … I would like to have work that would be useful.”
King Lawrence nodded. “I have nothing but respect for your diplomatic skills, Nathaniel, and I am well aware how popular you are in Vyrian. While I have every expectation that you will eventually be as popular here as you are there, I do think it will take some time for my people to see you as an extension of the crown rather than a foreign prince. I see your role primarily being that of prince consort while you’re getting your footing here, but in time that role could certainly expand as we see fit.”
“Ribbon cuttings, local festivals, and charitable events?” Nate asked with a grin.
The king grimaced. “Is that terribly off-putting? There are so many events on a daily basis that my staff has to say no to. Being a royal family of one is very limiting for that sort of thing.”
“It’s not off-putting,” Nate assured him. “Perhaps not as intellectually stimulating as influencing international relations, but I do enjoy those sorts of duties. I like talking to people, and that’s certainly the best way for me to win the hearts of Mirokan.”
A thought occurred and Nate took a deep breath, then looked straight at the king. “We’re both talking like this is going to happen.”
King Lawrence sat up straighter. “We are.”
“Is that…” Nate reminded himself that he had pledged to speak honestly. “I came here tonight certain that Amelia was wrong about your intent. I thought there was no way that you actually wanted to marry me.”
The king rested his forearms on the table. “I still don’t want you to feel pressured, Nathaniel. But as I said earlier, your sister is a very intelligent woman.”
Nate swallowed. His heart beat faster. There was a right way to do this. Nate pushed his chair back and stood, watching as the king’s face fell. He looked like he was about to say something but stopped as Nate stepped around the table and went down on one knee.
“Nathaniel…” King Lawrence said quietly.
Nate held out his hand and the king took it. “King Lawrence of Mirokan,” Nate said. “I have admired you for years. I have been humbled by the privilege of calling you a friend.” Nate kissed the back of his hand. “Would you now do me the immense honor of marrying me?”
King Lawrence beamed at him. “Yes, of course I will.” He stood and pulled Nate to his feet, then cleared his throat. “Prince Nathaniel of Vyrian, I very gladly accept your proposal of marriage, and look forward to making you prince consort of Mirokan.”
The warmth of the king’s smile and the light in his eyes made Nate bold. “May I kiss you?” he whispered.
“You may.”

I have a few that I’ll put under the cut!! 🥹
My first one is my main one, Don’t Wait For Me!! It all spiraled from a question of “What if Ellegaard/Magnus got put into Spectator Mode after they died? What if they could see and react to everything that was going on?”
It follows Ellegaard, and the whole thing is focused around her “waking up” right during Episode 4, and living the next 6 years in Spectator Mode!! I had fun fleshing out the worldbuilding, from the weird entities that can only impact her, a mysterious book that writes to her every so often, and a certain danger that gets worse the longer she stays- she can’t stay there forever!!
She spends a lot of time trying to find the rest of the Old Order, watching various people grow and change, and trying to figure out a way to let people on the other side know that she’s still there!!
I have another one where the Order of the Stone is a renowned paranormal investigation/ghost hunting team!! It’s really fun to sort their skills into other roles!!
Gabriel is always the one otherworldly entities are the least violent with, and his presence in a room is the most likely to allow for peaceful communication!!
Soren is well-versed in all kinds of folklore and fables, and is usually the most excited to investigate new hauntings- he’s keeping a running index on every type of entity, and he’s a notable force in the field of research based on how much he knows!! He’s in search of a particular entity he believes all other ghosts answer to, and that can provide all the answers he’s searching for but there’s no word on it yet..
Ivor knows just as much as Soren, and shares his passion- but where he differs is with his methods!! Where Soren might hold onto a dangerous situation to find out more about a ghost, Ivor would focus more on releasing the ghost and/or giving the entity whatever it needs to reach a place of rest! He and Soren are known to disagree on what to do when that happens- Soren always says that knowing more about a ghost will benefit the greater public, while Ivor doesn’t think it should be at the expense of that one entity!!
Magnus has been around paranormal happenings for as long as he can remember, and he’s usually the first to react when anything arises- he’s really experienced with practical work, and has the strongest instincts out of the entire Order! He’ll usually be among the first to enter a haunted location, and there are very few places he won’t go- he’s gotten himself out of many a situation before!! He believes more in the bodily sensations associated with a ghost to tell him what’s going on, and thinks anything else can be manipulated! When educating the public, he’s more likely to tell them to pay attention to how they feel!
Ellegaard, on the other hand, believes that hauntings can be quantified and observed with the right equipment- she’s developed technology to analyze electromagnetic frequencies, listen in on radio signals, record temperatures, sense motion.. She hopes that by making certain things, the Order (and the public!!) can have earlier warning signs if something’s wrong that the human body might not pick up on- which in her opinion will keep people safer in the long run!! She enjoys getting to help record new information about hauntings and entities, and she’s always eager to see if her prototypes or new methods will yield something new in a haunting!! She and Magnus bicker frequently about him “bolting into things” without taking in the entire environment first, and her “slowing them up and making them sitting ducks” by trying to test things!!
There’s so many more ideas I have for the New Order, the Portal Hall Shenanigans, and even the Admins!! 🥹
These are my two favorites- thanks so much for letting us talk about AUs!!! 💜
AU creators, where are y'all?
It's actually funny to me how many people out there create Modern AUs for MC:SM and only a few go for something more RPG or medieval, maybe even steampunk.
I have nothing against Modern AU or any AU in generall, I just think it's how people prefer turning events into the future rather than the past.
Personally, I really prefer seeing MC:SM in RPG, steampunk, and medieval styles simply because that's how I see Minecraft itself. Villages, towns, monsters, mines it's pleasing to think of MC:SM more like one of those D&D routes with friends. That's fun and leaves lots of room to explore different mechanics and stuff.
At the same time, there are people who simply don't care about the timeline and use MC:SM/Minecraft mechanics, and that's great too!
Honestly, we should go crazy with AU and timelines, because exploring is fun!
Every MC:SM AU creator- please, ramble about your AU to me, I would love to hear every single detail!
#This was so much fun!!! Thank you for the chance to ramble!! 🥹#I ended up rambling so much about the ghost one!! 😂 Oops oops!!!#mcsm

Blending Mythos Respectfully
@sapphicq submitted:
Hi all! I’m trying to write an urban fantasy that explores oppression in a world that is basically the same as ours, except with magic, while incorporating magical systems and mythologies of multiple cultures. I’ve done an okay amount of research on each one that I’d like to include (still need to do more for sure, especially considering how colonization has effected mythologies). However, I’m struggling a bit on how they should coexist, since in the world I’m writing about they’re present and tangible. One example of this is fox spirits in East Asian mythology. Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese mythologies each have a nine-tailed fox, and though my research says that the myth originates from Chinese mythology, it also says that each of the fox spirits carry different connotations of malevolence, benevolence, and how widespread they are, depending on which culture’s mythology is being referred to.
The same sort of thing has been popping up quite a lot in a lot of my research. I started to wonder if I could explain these similarities within world as “different cultures have come up with different names and customs surrounding the ‘same’ thing,” considering mythology in the real world from an anthropological perspective. However I don’t want to overgeneralize, especially considering that these different mythological figures are meant to be present and tangible. If I went that route, I wouldn’t want to say something like ‘actually, benevolent fox spirits do exist, and Korean mythology about fox spirits is wrong since Kumiho are pretty strictly malevolent,’ which would obviously be an implication. All this to say: do you have any tips for multiple mythos coexisting in a way that respects the various cultures they come from?
Avoid Round Pegs in Square Holes
A mistake you sometimes see Western authors make when dealing with mythology in urban fantasy settings is to confine the universe’s worldbuilding to a particular mythology or force the rules of a single culture’s folklore onto other cultures. For instance, here at WWC, we get a lot of questions asking how to represent supernatural creatures from multiple cultures respectfully alongside fae from Western Europe, and it's fairly obvious that the author plans to treat all supernatural creatures as fae. Urban fantasy based on Greek mythology or Christian mythology often falls into the same trap.
I think a writer can demonstrate greater creativity by embracing these differences. I think a potential way to deal with contradicting mythos between cultures is to come up with compelling reasons why differences exist. What world-building systems, philosophies and real-life phenomena allow for a framework that explains the simultaneous existence of commonalities and differences? As you know, in anthropology, there are theories that emphasize cultural diffusion as a way to explain similar customs within the same region, but there are also theories that hold that multiple cultures can develop the same traditions and principles independent of each other (See: existence of 0, lost-wax bronze casting, astronomical calendars and the use of wheels). The answers I’ve given are mostly technological. However myths and belief systems serve very real social functions as ways to keep people together and cultivate norms and mores. Lesya expands on the utility of intentional cultural diffusion below.
Similarly, within evolution, there are instances of species having common features because of a shared ancestor, but also instances where species without shared ancestors evolve to have similar features because they exist in the same environment. I believe flippers are examples of both types of evolution in marine animals. Thus, I think you need to question your assumption that “different cultures have come up with different names and customs surrounding the ‘same’ thing.” As the world is daily proof, they sometimes do, but they also sometimes don’t.
-Marika
First, props to you for sending us this ask. You have been thinking about this a lot and have done research into building an urban fantasy that doesn’t do the thing of putting all Asians under one umbrella.
Second, I’m going to agree with Marika here. Rather than go for the generalization route, revel in everyone's differences. It's a way for you to acknowledge the variations in the mythology, that not all have the same origins though there may be some similarities. Instead, they may have reached the same conclusions. My advice for blending mythologies is to lean into it, and not create a homogeneous umbrella. You can make something amazing with that.
-Jaya
Hybridity Through Diffusion
So a myth originated in China. This does not mean Chinese tellings have the monopoly on what a telling is. Marika and Jaya have gone into a possible solution, here, but what I’m going to examine here is a mental framework that a lot of people get stuck in that is actually ahistorical.
Cultural appropriation as we know it is shockingly recent when it comes to history. In the modern day, ownership boundaries of myths have become very strict because of primarily European colonialism picking and choosing everything it likes about a mythos, and, this is important: not letting up on the oppression of those peoples. There’s also a strong preference to kill those colonialism deems “wrong”, instead of creating a hybrid culture.
Historically, this got a lot more fluid.
What happened historically was primarily cultural diffusion, wherein open trade, intermarriage, and shared borders made it that myths, customs, and cultural practices were (mostly) freely exchanged without massive power imbalances happening, and then modified to fit local beliefs.
Key word: mostly. Because yes sometimes it happened that one place took over another place and imported all of its customs (see: China, Rome, the Mughals), but… often* the ruling power either backed off, was fought of, or otherwise left the region, leaving the common people to do whatever they wanted with the carcass of what had been imposed on them. Or sometimes, even, the imperial forces would actively create a hybridized culture in order to better rule others.
* in places where the ruling power has NOT backed off on oppression and assimilation, even if the colonialism is very old, then this is invalid and the power dynamics of appropriation are still at play.
Because, historically, there was a lot less incentive to simply genocide the peoples you took over (which is what made armies that did destroy all they took over so noteworthy). People were needed to keep providing food and materials, even if the new person got the resulting taxes.
This meant there were a lot more common people to play with the stuff imported by the imperial culture. And there was a lot more incentive to hybridize your customs to the common people’s customs, leading to the sometimes-hilarious situations like “Rome assigns an equivalence in their pantheon for literally every mythology they encountered, which was a lot.”
This also explains early Christianization, because it was a lot safer to simply adapt what you already had to make it better for your own ends than curbstomp everything that was “wrong” to your worldview. Ireland’s mythology survives in huge swaths, because it was either Christianized wholesale, or it was about “historical humans” and not fae. Norse mythology was similarly adapted for Christian worldviews, which means we unfortunately have no idea what the pre-Christian myths were.
So instead of thinking in terms of ownership, think instead in terms of diffusion.
Myths get imported along with food, cloth, or anything else necessary for life. Myths were, historically, a way for people to explain the world around them, both in place of and alongside science. “Ghost marches” are really common, globally, because if you have wind howling in the forest, it’s going to sound like predators, and predators mean go inside and lock the door. Weaving goddesses are also common, because weaving was so necessary to survive the elements.
Sometimes trade relationships soured, and you get bad associations with the imported stuff. Sometimes the relationship stayed great for long enough it got completely adapted. This doesn’t mean any one myth is “right”, nor does it mean you have to erase historical trade links. It just means you look at the historical context, understand that cultural exchange often used to be a lot more two-way than it is in modern appropriation times, and figure out what that means for your worldbuilding.

SW Suddenly-Omegaverse AU: Surrogacy, Worldbuilding, Obi-Mom
Truly the main irony of all this is that everyone considers Obi-Wan the Better Omega but Anakin is the one who's actually 👀👀👀 about pregnancy
Obi-Wan: I have the deepest respect for those who do it, but the idea of growing another person inside of me is weird and gross, no, thank you.
Meanwhile Anakin is like. Immediate baby fever. Someone actually approaches him like "hey... there are forms you can fill out to request an exception for pregnancy, and like... regulations" because he's that obvious about it.
I assume that if they've got safety nets for accidental pregnancies, then they're probably aware that there are people who want to do it on purpose? I feel like in an omegaverse where 'biological imperative to procreate' can be so much more intense, then maybe there's old precedent that stuck around even after suppressants got most of those hormones under better control.
Bit torn. Just know I want Anakin to Make Baby.
"Anakin, what are you--" "Do you think offering to be someone's surrogate would be acceptable to the council as a way to be pregnant without getting attached." "...what." "They'd probably accept that as a way to practice not getting attached, right?" "N...no, that's not... what?"
Anakin approaching Bail and Breha and being like “Do you... still want a kid? I would provide a kid. Do you want one here*?”
* in this dimension
Great way to give up the baby as a parent because he'd still be able to see them once in a while but also like... it's not HIS kid, technically. He can be a cool uncle who happened to give birth, which is distant enough to not be 'attached,' but close enough that his Tatooine-raised 'must ensure family is safe whenever possible' background doesn't flip out. It helps that 'Core World Royalty' is like... a top-tier family to be raised in.
(It would have to be post-war because he probably shouldn’t be risking his life while very pregnant. He needs to be reminded of that sometimes.)
Bail/Breha is an alpha/alpha relationship and while a pregnancy is still possible,* it’s a whole lot more difficult, and that's on top of Breha's canon medical issues that resulted in her heart and lungs getting replaced.
* AFAB alphas can get pregnant, and AMAB omegas can inseminate, but the success rate on that angle is much lower than the 'traditional' alpha/omega roles, as is any attempt at reproduction outside rut/heat. They're low-fertility overall for the non-dominant aspect of their reproductive system, which... ha, Anakin and Obi-Wan try to get explanations for why the senary system works the way it does, but it's a very longform history lesson that comes down to 'idk this got cemented so long ago that nobody really knows why anymore.'
AKA "why do you title these roles male omega and female alpha instead of intersex omega and intersex alpha since both parties have both genitals."
ANYWAY
Anakin: I want to make babies. But I don't want to get kicked out of the order. But I don't want to give up my own babies for adoption. But I can't keep my own babies if I want to stay a Jedi. So basically I want to have someone else's babies? Anakin: ...wait shit that's just surrogacy.
Anakin, calling up Obi-Wan: Hey are the Organas still struggling to have a kid? Obi-Wan: ...not really your business. Anakin: You're friends with Bail again though, right? Obi-Wan: I am, but-- Anakin: Do you think they'd want me to be a surrogate? Obi-Wan: What.
I can't decide if it's funnier for the Order to be like "I mean... technically there's no rules against this?" or if this is a precedent set by at least three omegas every generation because that's just how a/b/o manifested for omegas in a biological and cultural sense.
Bail: Wait, your former apprentice is... volunteering... to be our surrogate. Obi-Wan, exhausted: Yes. Bail: He barely knows us. Obi-Wan: He respects you and you're the closest people he knows that want a child and would be good parents. Bail: And he's just... volunteering? Obi-Wan: Yes. Also, you did say your primary worry was that a surrogate might be targeted for assassination and you couldn't ask someone to risk that, right? Anakin is very much able to avoid assassins, and would be staying primarily in the Temple anyway. Very safe, and not particularly scared of assassins in the first place. Bail: Your words say you approve, but your tone says otherwise. Obi-Wan: Anakin considers me his father. I'm not old enough to be a grandparent. Bail: Ah.
Anakin is a surrogate and enjoys it and everything is fine and then like a year later he's accidentally pregnant with his own and Rex's kid, and nobody knows how to ask if it's actually an accident.
A suggestion from @gelpenss:
OH MAN i.... have to drive home. But I just had a thought about like. I always want to poke at Betas in A/B/O like are they “normal” or different from our standard or.... but ANYWAY assuming they have a pheromonal thing I just think it would be neat if betas had the ability to be the Bucket of Cold Water. Like if caught early enough, and with the caveat it’s not permanent, a beta could arrest a rut or heat in its tracks until a more ideal time. Like. They aren’t birth control. But they are the remind me later button.
Okay done driving I am Returned to bring up why I brought up betas and it’s this: well okay 1. It plays nice with a popular but inaccurate dog breeding urban legend that female dogs will like, delay heat cycles? so that the bitches above them in pack hierarchy have first choice of mate selection. And I think in omegaverse it would be cool if that was a Bio Fact, and also historically enforced by the third designation. 2. It gives me an excuse to have betas have the Most Sensitive sense of smell because it’s their “job” to pick up on things before they go too far to be put on pause. 3. I’m just thinkin ‘bout a beta clone [...] just hovering around Obi-Wan because they found out how much stress his heat cycle causes and they’re like “okay cool I will help make sure it does Not”
I want to like a/b/o verses but betas niggle at me. I want to give them a hat and a Function that woulda helped before modern medicine.
I'm not sure how I feel about betas being able to delay heats, but I do like the idea of them having a more sensitive sense of pheromone smell than most. Most aliens assume it's omegas with the best sense of smell, and betas with the worst, but it's more complicated than that because they all specialize: Alphas are actually less attuned to pheromone smells, but more attuned to things that were useful back when humans were still a hunter-gatherer species. Omegas tend to be heightened towards danger smells like fire or aggression, and pheromones relating to children/care. Betas, as suggested above, are very sensitive to pheromone changes relating to mood and behavior of the community around them.
I like the idea that betas were historically the ones that ended up taking care children, unmated omegas, and so on during people's heats and ruts, because they kept their heads about themselves long enough to do things like cook and clean while someone was reeking of hormones. The checks and balances work out that betas may have lower fertility, but it makes them better able to support the network around them.
It works in with humanity's general collective history of thriving the most when working as a community.
Given that I decided that this is Jangobi, the clones might all subconsciously view Obi-Wan as Mom. Not intentionally, but, you know... Obi-Wan the not-evil stepmother. He doesn't know how he got into this situation, but he sure is here, and he sure as hell doesn't know how to get out.
Obi-Wan "I don't need to get pregnant, I have three million stepchildren" Kenobi
I definitely love "clones all want to make Obi-Wan's heats less stressful" but like in a different way from Whatever The Fuck Anakin's Got Going On.
Obi-Wan using the force to dull the pain in a Shiny's broken leg while the medic works on it and the Shiny just mumbles "Thanks mom" and everyone gets very embarrassed and pretends it didn't happen.
But then it happens again. And again.
Obi-Wan asks for an explanation from Cody and gets a halting response that, since Jango is technically their father, and his scent has been all over Obi-Wan recently... and Obi-Wan puts in a lot of effort to take care of them all.......
Anakin overhears the clones calling Obi-Wan "mom" and just. The most judgmental eyebrow raise.... Mostly in the sense of "You never let me call you dad" "Thought you said you weren't anyone's parent." "Hey, hey, Obi-Wan. What the fuck."
BOBA. BOBA ABSOLUTELY CALLS OBI-WAN MOM WHENEVER POSSIBLE. IT'S DEEPLY FRUSTRATING.
Obi-Wan eventually manages to admit that he's uncomfortable with it at minimum because of the gendering the word has for him, can they at least use the neutral 'buir' instead?
Word spreads like fire, takes like two days max for everyone to switch.
(Anakin demands cuddles as compensation for not getting to call Obi-Wan any true parental term for years.)

As someone, who's favourite character is Zuko, let me just say that your analysis about the Southern Raiders is spot on. Something about that episode (especially the way Zuko acted) always felt a little... off to me. And I could never figure out what it was exactly and considering the fact that discussion about this episode centered around the Kataang vs Zutara, I thought I was the only one who felt that way. So, I guess thanks for putting my thoughts into words.
Oh, I really feel ya, anon. If you actually don't look at the episode from a shipping point of view, which seems to be the focus of most the fandom, a lot of unpleasant things really start sticking out. I'm personally neutral to the Kataang vs. Zutara debate, I see good points and drawbacks to both ships, and no one's going to convince me that this episode proved the superiority of either pairing, especially when the shipping interpretations have never been important to me when analyzing this episode. People can say Aang is right in the end, they can say Zuko understands Katara's plight better (which, considering Aang has lost even more people he loved than Zuko has, he certainly should have understood Katara's suffering quite well too), but focusing on whether Zuko or Aang are the angel or the devil on Katara's shoulders practically blinds everyone to the very glaring and mindboggling flaws in this episode's writing, imo.
In general, the concept of Zuko's life-changing field trips with the three Gaang members he'd wronged the most is fine and fun for most people, but from the first time I watched the show it felt like the production team knew they were pressed for time and needed some veeeery quick and effective solution for Zuko to gain acceptance in the Gaang ASAP despite all the bad blood there. I can imagine a lot of people love these episodes, but admittedly I wouldn't rank any of them among my favorites because, as interesting as some of their concepts could be, if executed right, my immersion certainly wasn't as strong as with the rest of the show due to the nagging feeling that this was all for the sake of redeeming Zuko in the eyes of each Gaang member... and not necessarily in the eyes of the audience.
They get away with it, of course, because by this point in time, the audience is 100% conditioned to love the Gaang and Zuko, and if you see them getting along, you should be rejoicing in their team-up... but if you put some emotional distance between yourself as a viewer and the events of these episodes, their writing leaves a lot to be desired, especially in the concept of giving Zuko a quick whitewashing in the eyes of Aang, Sokka and Katara, one after the other, so they can genuinely accept him as a teammate and friend. If we'd seen similar trips frequently or occasionally in the rest of the show, with two specific members of the team taking off on an adventure by themselves, it might not be so glaringly obvious (and even... artificial? I guess?) that they're trying to quick-redeem him for each of them here, but on top of it happening thrice, it's literally happening one after the other, too. There's no episodes in-between, it's just literally a four-parter arc of "let's help Zuko become friends with these three".
The plotlines to be dealt with in these episodes are basically catered to each Gaang member, tailor-made life-changing field trips based on whatever they'll value the most, all of it conveniently possible and doable in the span of time they have between Zuko's joining of their group and the show's finale. Aang needs to learn firebending, Sokka needs to save his dad, Katara is permanently grieving for her mother's death. And so, Zuko to the rescue! If he helps them with their personal character quests, he gets 50+ approval points! :'D Honestly, I'm absolutely not against the notion of Zuko befriending them, obviously not, but the methods through which they chose to make it happen simply might not be the finest...?
Zuko loses his ability to bend because he "lost his rage", but he's still angry pretty often, the show even spoofs its own writing by showing him losing his patience at Sokka... while at the same time trying to sell that Zuko "isn't angry" anymore? Zuko helps break out random prisoners from the Boiling Rock without taking a single moment to actually learn who they are, why they were locked up, and without pondering if they deserve to be helped or if perhaps they're genuinely dangerous? Zuko gives Katara every possible tool and information she needs to take revenge on Yon Rha, because, loosely quoting his own words, he "cares what she thinks of him"...?
How about if we'd seen Zuko trying to connect with Fire Nation people, to help his fellow Fire Nation citizens, especially the ones who were living in dreadful conditions, like the ones in the Jang Hui river village? How about if we'd seen Zuko saving lives rather than threatening to take them? How about if we'd seen Zuko actually reasoning with his anger, and either working his way out of it, or repurposing it consciously, or making legitimate, personal efforts to find a new source of strength for his firebending through self-reflection, above all else?
We didn't really need sudden one-on-one field trips to teach Aang, Katara and Sokka to trust Zuko: we needed Zuko to prove himself worthy of that trust, to show how much he has changed, to literally contrast his new behavior with the old, to actually see that the guy no longer jumps into violence-mode 24/7, that he's willing to listen to other people's opinions or wisdom, that he wants to learn better when he knows he's misguided or misunderstanding something or another. Would he have become BFFs with any of them in four episodes if this had happened? Well, it definitely would have happened with Aang, the other two would have been trickier, but they definitely would have been more willing to accept him if they actually got to SEE that the changes in Zuko weren't skin-deep. Katara can be as thick-headed and stubborn as she may want to be, but I have no doubts she wouldn't have been able to hate Zuko as much as she used to if she'd seen him helping people, much like she often wants their group to do. But instead, they don't get to see the actual changes and growth... they just get their biggest goals and wishes satisfied, and that's enough to decide Zuko's trustworthy, no matter whatever sketchy behavior he displays in later episodes.
I absolutely appreciate the worldbuilding context we gain for the raids on the Water Tribe through The Southern Raiders, but I don't think this was an organic way to tell the story of how Zuko became friends with the Gaang. If pressed, I'd even say that Zuko's overt desperation to be their friend is OOC, to a degree: if this guy actually knows how dangerous his father's plans are (and he's supposed to :'D), how isn't he focusing on that side of things, when he's always been such a go-getter? It's not like he grew out of this sort of ends-justify-the-means behavior, seeing as he's absolutely obsessed with stopping his father ASAP, by any means possible, in the finale, when there was no such urgency to be found ever since he joined the Gaang. How isn't he more worried about stopping Ozai than about becoming best friends with the Gaang? Immediately sharing everything he's learned about Ozai's intentions of destroying the whole world might not make them friends instantaneously, but it would certainly get someone like Sokka to take his information seriously and immediately begin strategizing how to counter Ozai's plans. Instead, Zuko spent all those weeks, over a month, even, teaching Aang firebending, going on field trips and hanging out with his new friends in Ember Island. Once you have all the cards on deck and you actually look at all of them at once, doesn't it feel like there were so many more ways to achieve what the show was going for, far more effective ways than through the "let's be friends with Zuko" arc?
Ultimately, there's very little display of growth, in my opinion, in this small arc, on Zuko's side, despite the most obvious and reasonable way to earn the trust of the Gaang would be by outright showing them how much he's grown. I won't deny I appreciate that the writers respected his personality and didn't just warp him into the perfect good softboi the way the fandom apparently interprets him, but even if Zuko was going to be cranky and speak one-liners like "I'm never happy", it wasn't impossible to write better situations for him to connect with the Gaang's members and gain their trust. Even if the writers were set on having these episodes happen exactly as they did, they absolutely could have been written in a much better way, to create an explicit and direct contrast between Zuko's early behavior and the new Zuko's behavior when it comes to things that matter (most the parallels I've seen the fandom drawing are things like "oh look he hated tea before but now he brews it for his friends! So much growth!"... would've been nice to see the growth when it came to a lot of other things, too, if the growth really was there? Am I rite...?).
I may just be influenced by other redemption arcs that focus mainly on characters having common goals and working together to achieve them, then becoming friends in the process... but I really don't see how Zuko's character benefited from these episodes. Yes, bridges were built... but they absolutely could have been built in a more organic way that didn't make people like myself (and a few others) question if Zuko had learned or grown at all, considering the way he behaves isn't all that distant from the Zuko we've seen and known throughout the rest of the show. And the fact that he really seems to have learned nothing in The Southern Raiders once you reach the show's finale... you're basically asked to take for granted Zuko did learn a lot of lessons because he says he did, to assume he's going to put them into practice sometime in the future despite he has chances to do it during the show itself but never does, simply because they drop the ball upon every opportunity to show how much he's changed.
I really don't blame his character at all, when it comes to these shortcomings... it's seriously, genuinely, a problem with the writing department. Take a look through the fandom and you'll see thousands of people who claim Zuko's character arc is the most touching, complex and beautiful writing they ever have seen... and why? Because we're in the face of tell-don't-show :'D most people's perception of Zuko's character are based not so much on HOW Zuko displays his growth, it's strongly based on him stating he made progress, even if there's too many instances where the growth simply seems to have fallen to the wayside or gone forgotten for the sake of a plotline or another. Zuko absolutely could have been written far better than this, he could absolutely have the redemption arc his fans are sure he does have, but for me... there's way too many gaps in logic, too many missed opportunities, to truly think his growth was as extraordinary as a lot of people are hung up on saying it was.
#anon#woops#I probably shouldn't have written this much here but what can I say#I've got beef with these storylines#and I unfortunately can't bbq it (?)#so instead I ramble and ramble and hope you guys forgive me for how long-winded I can be :'D

okay, so, here are my thoughts on the finale,
i’m gonna start with the things i didn’t like, just because of who i am as a person! my feelings are mixed, but... looks lovingly at evil morty. he truly was the only exception as usual ♥
i’m not going to lie, this whole thing felt. rushed. although some of rick’s meta commentary about not touching citadel shit because it was canon and he and morty were supposed to be going back to lighthearted one off adventures, and “the second he reveals that he’s evil, we’re out” made me laugh, it also felt very disingenuous and ham-fisted. having him do all these fourth wall breaks honestly took away from the impact of what this episode could have been, but whatever.
i just got the vibe that they wanted everyone to stfu about the citadel and evil morty, so they quickly stuck together this episode that dealt with fans’ demand in one fell swoop so they could move on from the existence of both plotlines. i honestly thought it was a bit wasteful since tales from the citadel resonated with a lot of fans and it was an interesting bit of worldbuilding with compelling narratives going on.
you already all likely know how irritated i am with morty’s character degrading so much once again. this entire season has been building him up to becoming so much more capable, only to wrench it away from him again by instead having his co-dependency with rick ramped up to the point it was literally out of character. this has come out of nowhere. at no point in the show’s entire run has morty ever been this needy with rick.
again, i feel like this may have been written around what eventually ended up happening at the citadel, with the revelation that mortys are ‘bred for forgiveness.’ it would have been far more compelling for our morty to have continued to go down the path of being decidedly unforgiving of rick’s bullshit, thereby making him deviate from the norm in a similar way to evil morty himself and implicating that the cycle of a morty going to these extremes is going to be repeated once again.
rick did not deserve or earn voicing the recognition that his dynamic with morty was toxic, and abusive. are you fucking kidding me? the smartest man in the universe only JUST clocked onto that? bullshit! he’s known all along, and he’s been using it for his own gain! he doesn’t get to just say it with that regretful voice as if he’s been clueless / oblivious to it this entire time. they just wanted the audience to feel sympathetic for him by throwing in this tidbit and a tragic backstory, as if that even sort of makes up for everything he’s put his family through.
abandoning the people you’ve hurt is ALSO abusive and toxic behaviour! he’s done it time and time again! how is acknowledging the fact that you hurt people, that you hurt your family, the people that love you despite the fact you objectively don’t deserve it, then ditching them once again instead of staying with them and improving as a person and helping everyone heal from what you’ve put them through, ANY BETTER?? he never changes!!
i also couldn’t really process the fact that rick just handed morty his portal gun like it was nothing-- i feel like him topping it off and using it behind rick’s back should have been a bigger deal than what it was. also, morty would not break a guy out of a mental asylum without a second thought. he simply wouldn’t do that.
we’ve fallen right back into the status quo of morty being stupid and rick being the smartest one in the room who always knows what’s going on, even when he actually shouldn’t for the sake of a few meta jokes. which is more annoying than i can put into words tbqh
obviously i hated all the parallels they were attempting to make between rick and morty having a romantic relationship and “breaking up.” never has morty behaved so uncharacteristically in any other episode of the show. it honestly felt disrespectful to all the growth he’s had as a character to reduce him to something so pathetic.
i guess this is less of a thing i disliked, and more of a commentary on rick’s character? but once again, his hypocrisy really leapt out at me once it was revealed that he always has a hand in bringing together beths and jerrys in order to ensure that more mortys will end up in the multiverse. i find it unbelievably sad that he’ll willingly ensnare the two of them in the throes of a relationship that he knows is likely to become toxic and cause the both of them to be miserable throughout their time together; they’re rarely happy / compatible together and always end up sticking it out for the kids. it also makes his constant shitting on jerry even more egregious and almost serves to call his love for his daughter into question for me. he’s using her as a means to his own ends by manipulating situations so she’ll meet jerry and they’ll likely end up together.
don’t get me wrong, i actually really loved the fact he had a hand in founding the citadel he now loathes so much, and i think the constant creation of mortys as grandsons ‘bred to forgive’ ricks is so fucked up and awful in the most intriguing way. it’s akin to him fiddling with the concept of keeping mortys in constant pain to cloak his comings and goings around the multiverse (on paper, morty, on paper!), except this time he did it in reality.
evil morty. oh my god, evil morty. my saving grace. my ray of light. i’m so, so, so pleased with the way he was handled. while i admit i was looking forward to more of a slow - burn thing, getting a bit of insight into his presidency and possibly exploring a dynamic with him and c-137 (we’ll get to that)... i honestly still really loved what ended up happening with him, even though i still believe on some level that they just wanted to tie up his narrative thread so fans wouldn’t remain fixated on him.
of course he did. of course that motherfucker rick created a boundary within the infinite multiverse that ensured he’d always be the smartest man within it as far as mortys and other people in his life were concerned. i’ve always found it odd that such universes were never brought up even in passing; the nature of infinite possibilities always dictated that someone smarter than him must exist out there, and that worlds existed where he was nobody special.
him being morally gray. i could cry. i was clinging on to the hope that it would be shown he hates ricks more than he looks down on mortys, and it absolutely was. while he was okay with killing and hurting mortys to achieve his own “selfish” ends, it’s clear that he’s unhappy with the cycle of abuse from their infinite grandfathers that pushes him to these extremes, loathes the concept that mortys are not supposed to defy their ricks. “if you’ve ever been sick of him, you’ve been evil morty too.” he hates ricks FAR more than he does mortys, and you can pry that from my cold, dead hands. he believes mortys are beyond help because of the way they stick by rick-- the fact they’re literally created with being yes-men for rick in mind.
he didn’t seek to make changes for the greater good of other mortys within the citadel. i think he understood on some level, it was impossible. i think he has this belief that other mortys are part of the problem, because they perpetuate the cyclic dynamic of toxicity and harm-- they don’t move to break free from it the way he does, and so he feels no guilt leaving them behind while he breaks into the aspect of the multiverse where rick has no power. it’s honestly heartbreaking that he’s come to have a mindset like that.
i think seeing c-137 reach out to help rick up once again instead of accepting what i hope and pray was a semi - genuine offer to join him as he departed was just yet another instance of him witnessing a morty doing the most to save the man who makes their lives a living hell. if he was truly unsympathetic, he’d have made no such offer. if he thinks a morty is capable of pulling away from the hold ricks have on them, he wants them out of this shit just as much as he himself wants to break free from it. i think he has the mindset that i know they tried to play it off with “haha the other seat’s a toilet,” but i don’t think that was the case and they were once again just undermining the moment for no good reason. SCREAMS!! don’t get me wrong what he did WAS selfish and evil. but in a way you can understand where it derives from
again, it REALLY irritates me they’ve undone so much of morty’s character just to ensure he wouldn’t end up taking evil morty up on his proposition. if morty had retained even a tenth of the character growth he’s been having from late season four until towards the end of season five, wherein it began to unravel, he’d have left rick. undeniably.
the yellow portal. oh my god............
it made me so fucking emotional to see that. he’s won. he’s free.

No, I get it, I tend to get lost in my own words when I'm trying to make more than one point
I think I wrote this in replies to different people but I definitely have a tolerance for honestly anything when it comes to fiction mostly, so dark romance tropes don't really faze me. But I did end up getting really frustrated with sjm because she ended up trying to moralize something the couldn't adequately be discussed with the foundations of the book she had written.
Tbh this also reminds me of false imprisonment and the ethics of involuntary treatment, because depending on what lens I'm looking at feylin's dynamic, I can apply both (whether it's through a hyper realistic one or one that has to work with sjm's inconsistent writing).
I would definitely question Feyre's mental state before Tamlin confined her to the Manor. My whole discomfort with that scene is that while, yeah, irl this situation is inexcusable in a partnership/relationship, this exact scene doesn't exist irl. Besides the fantasy of it all and the suspension of disbelief we're already asked to have (something that's honestly difficult to do with sjm switching between different vibes with time periods and morals), Tamlin as High Lord is the government in a sense. He's judge, jury, and executioner. Which isn't unique to historical fiction, fantasy, and even dark romance—some books even set out to purposefully have this type of dynamic in a relationship. But that also means, that by the morals that are typically the norm in these books, Tamlin is well within his "right" to have power over Feyre as her ruler by her currently being a citizen of the Spring Court.
At best, with sjm's worldbuilding, with Feyre being potentially suicidal and with modern ethnics in mind, all Tamlin could realistically do to stay within that "morally good" place is to let Feyre come after him on his military expedition of scouting out Hybern (a kingdom? that is actively trying to find her at best and arguably kill AGAIN at worst). In that sense, I do agree with you, Tamlin does have both a personal and legal responsibility to Feyre. Because he's not just her partner, he's also her ruler. And with her being the potential Lady of the Spring Court, she's also not only his partner but also is (somewhat) a legal force in her own right. Her actions don't exist in a vacuum. Her actions don't just affect Tamlin or her on personal level but the Court itself.
It's why I think that she shouldn't have tried to force Tamlin to take her along because despite her intentions, she does not have the same capabilities of other High Fae that have specifically been trained to fight other highly skilled warriors.
In a reply, I said this: Realistically, despite if Feyre needs to do this specific act of service, she would still be a liability and even could make mistakes that could lead to the endangerment of other people. (Side note, I don’t disagree that Feyre can’t help others, just that she’s choosing the things that she can’t help with and deciding to make her grave there).
In short, Tamlin is acting as a High Lord and as her partner in that scene. (What he did wasn't right, but from we know from sjm's worldbuilding, what should he have done as you said with the resources they would have if she would forcefully try to come along?)
I also said this: And that’s why I find Tamlin’s action here not completely abusive (because it is, in the strictest sense) but they don’t exist in our world and they don’t live with our morals.
That's also why I personally disliked having this opinion in the first place because taking it from this fictional world to the real world, I had to face some of my own personal bias with involuntary treatment, especially when it has to do with suicidal ideation. Irl, I completely believe that if Feyre and Tamlin were romantic partners (and even if he was idk, the president or something), Tamlin's action here is false imprisonment and a form of abuse even if he had "good" intentions. But even in this situation, it can't be the same as we would treat it irl.
I also think that the difference for me personally is that Nesta's situation and her forced "intervention" is one that I can apply very easily irl and even a situation I've been through (with complicated results), but Tamlin and Feyre's situation is not.
I made a post exactly about this, just not with the same words: [this is also ignoring the fact that I consider acomaf Tamlin a retcon and I don't think he would do any of this regardless of me finding it justified or not.] and that's because Tamlin doesn't exist as one person for me. When I'm discussing the books and even critiquing them, Tamlin exists as both with sjm's retcons of him and not for me. It's honestly makes me exhausted with discussing this series because there's so many things to get through first to even make a point by itself because of her retcons and her writing craft alone.
But genuinely, thank you for talking with me fr!! I've really been just wanting to have a talk about this
tbh this might be a controversial take even within our little corner of the internet, but I don't see Tamlin as abusive.
I'd love to actually have a good natured conversation about this honestly and even to see if anyone else agrees.
My opinion can honestly be summed up into that while I do believe that Tamlin did shitty things to Feyre (primarily only really her being confined to the Manor but even then I have more thoughts on that) and her to him, he isn't Feyre's abuser in the way that sjm was aiming for.
I've kinda been feeling almost guilty for this feeling, but I also just wanna explore this idea and not create my own inner echo chamber.

Hello Lenn!
I’ve been following your mc sideblog for a like, a few months(?) and have been reading to be truly free since the first chapter and I just have to say:
You are literally my favourite fanfic writer. Between updates I just keep rereading to be truly free over and over again. It’s just so brilliant, every sentence is just so !!!! Idk how to describe it, I don’t think I can describe it, you can just tell you poured a lot of love, energy and time into it and it paid off so well! All the scenes just work so well. And the characterization! You capture everyone’s personality perfectly and I love how you write Techno. I get so hyped for your updates I’ve literally spoken about it to real life friends lol. Also! You introduced the politics and worldbuilding so well so well that I just me wanna know more.
I’m sure you get this a lot, that you’re a wonderful, really talented writer.
(Also that ask you sent anarachy-and-piglins, yeah how are you able to get me SO hooked with one tumblr ask? that was amazing I will be thinking a lot about it thank you very much, if you have even one crumb to share about it I would love to hear)
You know anon, first I gotta thank you because I did NOT realize I had asks turned off on paladinpalindrome. That's a big oopsie on my part. And you sending this ask let me know I did that so now I can fix it. So, omg thanks.
Second of all, I am currently a puddle of goo. Just, goo on the floor. This comment was so nice, I just completely melted. I am the first goo to be able to use a keyboard because you are just SO INCREDIBLY NICE. I don't even know WHAT to do with you telling me I'm your favorite fanfic author. I am overjoyed that you enjoy my story that much. I'm having a blast writing it, and it just makes it so much fun knowing that others like it to.
You saying you reread it is breaking my brain. Like asjkhks. Someone liked it enough to reread. I'm blushing. Blushing is something goo can do, right?
I do pour a lot of effort into it. I want it to be good. I enjoy making it good. Even if sometimes I get a little stuck, I love the story so much and want to do it justice. Sometimes I feel a little like I am being a bit too much of a perfectionist with it, seeing little flaws that are probably not there or not a big deal, but I think that is everyone who tries to make art or write or create in general. Like, Characterization? I try really hard on that. Like really really hard. I want it to feel authentic. I don't want the characters to feel ooc. But I also want to indulge in the writing tropes that I find fun. Which means thinking of realistic reasons for those situations to occur. And I am so so touched to hear that I am doing that successfully. It makes me feel great.
Also, the politics and worldbuilding is so fun, but also INCREDIBLY exhausting. Why did I make the world so big, oh ancients. (The answer was because it's fun but keeping everything straight is very hard).
I'm so incredibly happy that you think I am doing a good job. That is-well, goo-inducing. I don't have the words to describe the happy bubbling feeling. I am twirling my hair.
I'm assuming you mean the Dark Royal SBI ask I sent to Anarchy-and-Piglins. I don't have a ton of concrete ideas on it yet. If I do write it, I won't post it until I have the whole thing written out. Just because that would maybe help me NOT blow it up into a 100k word monster like To Be Truly Free has become. Maybe. Hopefully.
As for crumbs with it, hmmm. I kinda like the idea that Tommy doesn't like Techno at first? You know, he's jealous of all the time that Will spends with Techno and so he isn't warming up to him. But at a dinner, Techno secretly offers to eat Tommy's vegetables that he doesn't want to eat (they were carrots, why would Tommy want to eat carrots? ew). When Phil turns his back for a second, Techno scoops them up in his hand and shoves them all in his mouth in one bite. When Phil turn back, all of Tommy's veggies are gone so Tommy can go play. Techno has to pretend that he doesn't have a mouth full of food, because that isn't very polite. Luckily, its not all that strange for him to be a little less talkative. Tommy starts to warm up to him after that.
Phil knew, of course, but he wanted his new sonboy to get along with his kids. However, he doesn't give them a chance to do it again so Tommy still has to eat his veggies.
Thank you so much for the ask! And thank you for your kind words <3 <3 <3

I'm am completely tired of people crapping on villians and not trying to understand their perspectives I am really sick of the fandom doing all this
Me too, anon, me too. That's exactly why I create this blog.
I've said it before, but if someone decides to ignore the villains and their narratives through the manga, that person is not going to be able to read correctly the main arc.
In bnha / mha, the villains are not simple side characters. Shigaraki Tomura has the same relevance as Midoriya Izuku, for example. They are direct parallels and together they work as the representations of the theme. If my speculations and metas are correct, you have all the main characters directly interacting with the villains to reach the climax of the series.
Besides, it really frustraste me that people are unable to appreciate a character and how that character is written just because that said character is not "good". It completely takes the depth of the characters and the complexity of their buildings and create a shallow storyline. Even the characters in kids TV shows have different degrees of good and bad traits, because we are in an era of writing where we're exploring how real a character can get.
People can say "I like shallow, simple characters with very explicit plots that don't challenge my comprehension or my mind" and that would be perfectly fine, there's no shame in liking simple stuff. Instead, they invent every type of excuses to hate characters? And I mean, you can hate a character for your own personal reasons, but instigating a crusade against that character and the fans?
Also, many fans are unable to understand that there are not universal rules to judge characters WITHOUT the context. Lately I've seen so many people bringing things out of context and directly violating the original material not in rational ways (admitting something is fan modified, fan made, personal takes, etc) but in harmful serious ways, by telling others that what they see is the only possible point of view on the matter.
For example, I'm totally able to say that I hate Overhaul in the canon for what he did but I'm pretty much interested in the implications of his writing. I can write many aus about Overhaul without liking the character in a sentimental way, just because I as a writer want to explore the possibilities within this character. I can totally say Boku No Hero Academia is not the best written manga and still entirely love and rant about the worldbuilding daily.
When it comes to the villains, it is simply annoying to me how people refuse to acknowledge that they are some of the best written characters in the manga. Toga is one of the best written female characters in mha / bnha, Dabi has an intricate personal arc that involves the values of the hero system itself and Shigaraki Tomura is— I don't even have words for the amount of dedication Horikoshi put in Tomura. He's been driving the plot along with Izuku this whole time. I can even argue that Shigaraki is better written than Izuku, because he is way more deep in terms of motivations, psychological traits and way of acting.
People is free to hate the villains, but to refuse to see the greatness of their writing? And even then, it's incredible the amount of issues I've seen within the fans regarding the villains.
For example: Spinner as a character represents the racism within the bnha / mha world. He is an incredible character, he narrates the MVA arc, he's been there for the almost every arc of the villains... And yet he lacks popularity. Why? I know studio bones tends to take him out of the anime, but this also has a reason. Why studio bones thinks Spinner is not as relevant or popular as the others? It's safe to assume a group of fans don't care about him only because he "doesn't have the look".
Sometimes when I point out that the League is right about MANY issues within the hero system, some fans go great lengths to defend the heroes and shut down my arguments. I don't personally understand how people likes to ignore the fact that pro-heroes in bnha / mha are a mixture of the police-the army with the celebrity world. In the real world, we're right now living a whole situation regarding the values behind the police existence and the negative side of putting celebrities like they are gods. You can clearly see it reflected on the bnha / mha universe, the villains clearly point out the privileges of the pro-heroes and why the system promoting and manipulating such privileges has created the catastrophe they're going through. But apparently fans don't want to read that? Because heroes are supposed to be good and villains are supposed to be bad, I guess. They don't understand the hero-villain narrative has been dehumanizing the characters and the main arc of bnha / mha is working on it to show that more than heroes and villains and citizens, there are complex humans who don't fall into an absolute.
I'm sorry for ranting about this anon, but every time I read "villain fan" as in derrogatory, I laugh because I'm baffled. Most stories need a good antagonist for it to work. There are MANY types of antagonists and MANY types of villains and they just– they just ignore it? Like it is nothing? And then they pretend to judge the villains by only taking tiny parts of their personalities and stories and they pretend to say that is accurate?
I don't know what to say to that. I can only write meta to help people understand the villains better and show them why they are so important and impressive. If they don't want to acknowledge it, that's their problem.
I love to talk and discuss people with different points of view as long as we're able to keep things respectful, but the minute they start attacking me without even listening to my arguments, good bye.
I thank God for the block button every single day of my life.
Well, I hope you're having a great day, anon. Please remember to drink water, take your meds, eat enough, sleep enough and don't forget to breath deep and use the block button and the content and tag filters as much as you want.
