I did not sleep at all last night. I even went and laid down in the guest room after That Guy got up where I usually pass right out but I didn't sleep in there, either.
I feel like All the Shit.
Long morning ramble.
Sleeping in a night cap is annoying but it's keeping my ends from being fried for longer. My hair's texture was already chef's kiss, now it's double chef's kiss.
-
That Guy said that he has to run the car tax payment to town on his way home from work today but DO NOT try to walk home if he's not there when I get off work because it's going to be nearly 100F and wait for him to pick me up.
He also said he'll have to start looking for another car, which should have been done a very, very long time ago because I could have been working as soon as Son expressed and demonstrated that I wasn't needed by him anymore. Don't take that the wrong way, I don't mean he said "I don't need you." he said things like he'd like to go to the bus stop by himself and has shown that he can be trusted on his own, etc.
I did intend to get my own car (or a truck), but if he buys one and doesn't expect me to pay for it (though he may expect me to pay for it) that lets me put more into savings for later.
I think That Guy is suddenly aware of how difficult he's made it for me to work all this time, which is interesting because I really did think he did it on purpose and then was blaming me.
He was saying that to drop me off and pick me up at the mail room job he'd only be able to work 4 hours a day. Granted he'd earn more in that four hours than I will in 12 hours even with this moderately big pay rate. And I was like yes, that's why I'd been limiting my job search to positions on your normal route (as he'd demanded), but this job pays much more per hour than any of the others I can do locally and I have experience which makes it more likely I'd get in, so it's worth the extra time and effort in my opinion.
$19.23/hr is THE highest income I've seen locally for almost ANY job, actually... There was one federal job that requires a TS clearance that pays like $65/hr, most are paying around $15 with some management positions offering $17 - $24. The gas station I'm at is actually one of the lowest at $10 though there are some places offering $8.50. Because they can.
He did say he'd thought it was a federal mail position and I'd get the Big Bennies and retirement but I'd just be an employee of Goodwill so not get the USPS packet. I'm not the only one that's been confused by how the job was listed.
The actually bennies:
50% Company-paid Health Insurance After 30 days of employment and begins the first day of the first month after employees’ first 30 days.
Company-paid Life Insurance
Company-paid Long-Term Disability (LTD) and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance
Dental Insurance – Guardian Dental
Vision Insurance – Davis Vision
Supplemental Insurances – Colonial Life and Legal Shield
401(k) – The company matches up to 4% of salary and is available for enrollment after six months of employment.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Resource Assistance Program (RAP)
Direct Deposit
Vacation Leave – Twelve days of vacation available after 3 months of employment.
Sick Leave – 6 days that can be used after 30 days of employment.
Personal Days – 3 days that can be used starting on your first day.
Holiday Pay – 8 paid holidays after 30 days of employment.
That's not as good as federal, but is pretty good.
-
It's like he's only just now understanding what telling me to get insurance, which meant getting a job because he won't let the insurance companies look at his finances to prove that I can afford insurance and won't sell a policy to someone with less than $1k in the bank and no income, MEANS.
It means me being even more physically exhausted, in more pain, chores not getting done, falling asleep at the dinner table while eating....
He really did not expect me to throw myself out into the world like i have, and does not seem to have understood just how much of an inconvenience me working would be for him.
Like, he was crunching the numbers because he doesn't want to be thrown into a higher tax bracket even if it means more money coming in overall, but I think I'd be filing separately anyway so I can get back as much as possible without it being on a check in his name.
I wonder if the mail room folks get any sort of tax preparation deals since we're working IN an IRS office... Wouldn't that be nice to be able to say "It's my turn" and go sit down with an IRS prepper and do your taxes in person to be sure they're very correct?
So, I think I mentioned already the hours are 6:30-3 which is kind of nice as I do like getting my day over with early and I'd still be getting up at 3:30 with That Guy anyway so it's not like I'd have to change my sleep schedule at all.
The lady on the phone also cleared up some confusion for me about why the job listing said Goodwill, then IRS, and talking about custodial jobs????
So, I'd be an employee of Goodwill, and Goodwill contracts out those employees to other places, specifically the local Goodwill contracts out to federal and military establishments (the IRS building is on a small National Guard base so I do have to go through a checkpoint and get the car searched which is annoying and I hope I don't have to do that EVERY day, like I hope I get an ID card I just scan and can get in or something...) and their contract has been running so long with this IRS branch that Goodwill's sign is on the building.
The custodial job mention was them pointing anyone that IS severely disabled toward that job instead of the mail room position because the custodial job is slow paced which makes it suitable for people with developmental delays who may need more time to complete a task. But the whole job listing was a mess.
I do need to ask when the next bid is, because I could get hired on, the contract be rebid, and Goodwill lose which would leave me with no work until another contract was picked up, or could also mean a pay cut if they have to undercut another contractor to get the lowest bid and it's good to know what to expect.
She also said that some of the small mail crew, which is about 5 people (to me that is a lot because I'm used to being alone in the mail room) bring in knitting or crochet projects because it's slow now and then. That's generally when I would pick up a broom or a bottle of cleanser but I wouldn't mind crocheting at work :P
Also need to ask about lunch because the work day is exactly 8 hours so unless lunch is paid, I'd not be getting paid for 8 hours of work every day.
-
Anyway I've been feeling the guilt about maybe jumping jobs so soon (my start date would likely be mid August if not a little later), but I also helped find a vendor for something the gas station needed and that helps two people [who aren't me make more money... hm....] so I guess I don't feel too bad.
Manager asked me if I bake because people have been asking for fresh baked goods and I said no, I hate cooking and you can't make me do it, BUT I know that one of Son's classmates' moms bakes and is selling things through the local 7-11 so I'll ask if they'd be interested and they are. They should get in contact with the gas station any day now.
My suggestion is that the baker take some samples to the gas station and go talk to Manager in person, but I'm not the one running the business.

Tips for coping with depression
As someone who struggles deeply with depression, I thought I'd post these very simple but very crucial tips for overcoming a low time
FIRST AND FOREMOST, IF YOU ARE UNHAPPY ENOUGH THAT IT'S AFFECTING THE WAY YOU ENJOY LIFE, YOU'RE UNHAPPY ENOUGH TO SEEK OUT THERAPY AND POSSIBLY MEDICATION. My depression doesn't usually manifest as sadness. It manifests as exhaustion, lack of drive, and tanking self-care. So it took me a long time to realize that it "counted" as depression. If you don't have insurance, look up a therapist who is willing to do a payment plan and to see you only a couple times a year, maybe just via tele appointment. They might be able to prescribe you medications if that's what you need. I was VERY hesitant to start meds, but I tried low doses of two meds and they rapidly turned my life around.
But in addition, here are my personal recommendations:
BRUSH YOUR TEETH. Always do this first. I don't know what the heck it is about depression that makes brushing your teeth so damn hard, but it's a thing, and you'll feel better if you do this first.
START WITH A SHOWER. Once you finally manage to force yourself out of bed, please for all that is holy, just get a shower. I prefer baths, but I've heard from others that the shower part is crucial to them. Get a shower and stay in there as long as you friggin' want or can. Get some tingly mint shampoo. Get a tingly face wash. That shit is invigorating. I actually keep my toothbrush and toothpaste in the shower and brush at the end of my bath (whatever I'm depressed and weird)
GO OUTSIDE. Even if it's just opening a window or standing on your apartment's balcony for a bit. Go outside and see the earth. Go for a walk.
GET SUNLIT. get assessed for vitamin D--you probably need supplements. Purchas an indoor SAD sun lamp; you can get them pretty cheap on Amazon and just 30 mins a day with that thing makes a difference!
SUPPLEMENTS. Important and useful ones I like are Vitamin D, Ashwaganda, CBD oil, Kratom (approach with care if you have addiction issues). And take a friggin' multivitamin--you're a grownup.
ALWAYS DO SOMETHING KIND FOR YOURSELF. do something small, simple, and kind for yourself, for no reason other than it's a simple pleasure. Eat one of those tiny half cup portions of ice cream they have at the grocery store, put vetiver oil in your bath, get the overpriced drink at Starbucks you always tell yourslef you shouldn't waste money on, light a candle or get one of those misting waterfall thingies and plug it in. Watch some cat videos, do a coloring book, bake a batch of muffins. Whatever feels nice to you.
LISTEN TO HAPPY MUSIC. I'm a big fan of angsty, dark rock and alternative music, but I force myself to avoid it when I'm having a hard time mentally. Instead I listen to upbeat gym music or pop, music that sound how I wish I felt.
CLEAN YOUR SPACE. If you're my kind of mentally ill, your living space sometimes can get pretty bad. There can be are piles. Put on some of the aforementioned music and get going, one item at a time, you can always take a break or stop whenever you want.
GO TO THE GYM. People who've never really worked out don't seem to believe us gym rats, but it's true: regular exercise can help almost as much as (or more than) antidepressants!
DRINK LOTS OF WATER AND EAT WELL. I used to be a diet soda addict, okay? But water is what our bodies thrive on, and you'll be amazed at how much more awake a simple chug of water can make you feel.
CALL A HELPLINE. If you need to talk, call a helpline. It's so easy. You don't have to be in crisis mode or at the end of your rope to call, and unless you're on the phone actively threatening immediate harm to yourself, they aren't going to do anything but give you a kind ear. I volunteer at one of these helplines, which strangely also really helps with depression.
BE KIND! To yourself and others. It's free to do and worth its weight in gold to the people on the receiving end. As Ru Paul likes to say: "Kindness is the highest form of intellect."

saw you in the notes of some post saying you work in finance. like, no pressure, and i'm not expecting any depth from a tumblr ask, but... do you have any advice for people living paycheck to paycheck other than the classic "make a budget"? (i have already discovered that getting a credit card does not help.)
just wondering if there's anything you've learned from your profession that you wish was better known to the public
https://undebt.it/ is a big help to help pay off debt efficiently undebt it - google search if you don’t like hitting links - I don’t hitting links. I have a super hard time with budgets myself. And credit cards are rough - I get manic and then my budget friendly self can’t keep up with manic me.
Apologies in advance if some of this is like bro - I don’t live a place w these stores - just mentally replace store names with what’s around you.
If your debt has an interest rate under 7%, pay the minimums because a lot of investments will grow at 7% or better (common examples - car loans, most student loans, mortgages, etc.). Typically it’s better to focus on the higher interest loans/debt first. If it’s above 7%, prioritize that. A lot of minimum payments will also never pay off your debt - designed to keep you in it.
If you have a Roth option in your work retirement account, do that. It’s taxed now instead of in retirement - taxes only go up over time. However if you need to reduce your taxable income, then pretax dollars will do that. Only contribute up to the match if it’s not Roth. If it’s pretax, then you usually only want do up to the match. Maximize the free money you can get from your employer.
Always opt into long term disability insurance at work. When you can afford some extra coverage check out supplemental (most employers offer 60% in the US - if you only were paid 60% of your income it would be rough), life insurance is cheap - 200k is a small policy. The company you go with matters. A company like mass mutual or northwestern mutual (I’m at northwestern) gives higher dividends- basically a good chunk of profit goes back to policy holders instead of stockholders. Most companies can run company comparisons. Insurance pays for financial security. It’s not a scam - which is genuinely what I thought of it before I got into the field and understood it better.
Whole life insurance costs more - but it’s worth it. It’s like buying your insurance instead of renting. Again company matters - example: northwestern mutual cash value grows historically at 5% on average, give or take, usually give. It’s money you can use to collateralize a loan or take a loan out against your own policy and “be your own bank” - downside, if finances are unstable, it’s a policy with regular premiums. Unlike a Roth you can stop contributing to any time, you’re paying for coverage and it’s monthly or whatever interval without much for exceptions. Probably not a good fit for you right now with being paycheck to paycheck - but something to keep in mind for the future.
Some of my hacks for my own life and my tight budget - I get most of my stuff off of Facebook marketplace for free or cheap - if you search something for a week or two and save the cheap items eventually they’ll appear for free or less and less. You just gotta be quick to ask and pick up. I picked up a stand alone pantry cabinet yesterday for free so now I have more storage space for non-perishables. Also if you just always keep free and “curb alert” as a regular search item you’ll find good stuff. I’ve picked up some things that I know have value near me - like fish tanks with stands only to resell them later at market value which is higher because I’m in a city/suburban outskirts - I only deal in cash on Facebook because they wanna start tracking and people can’t rescind a $20 electronically.
There are food shelves that don’t require minimums. There’s also no shame in seeing if you can get assistance from the government. If you can boost yourself to live better, do it.
The dollar tree (and some other dollar stores) - while most food at the dollar tree isn’t a good deal - I’ve also found shelf stable tofu, pesto, mustard (1.25 vs $5 for pesto). I also have pets - my cats get their toys on a stick with the dangly strings from the dollar tree. I get all of my cleaning products at the dollar tree. You can also make your own - one super simple one is lemon juice (from bottle), white vinegar, and water.
I shop at specific places for specific items. I get carbon litter box filters at my hardware store because they’re a dollar there instead of $5-7 elsewhere.
I order my groceries online - it’s convenient but it also eliminates a lot of impulse shopping. I pay $10/month for it, but I save more than $10 in not impulse buying.
I mostly avoid target - target has done research on how to get you to buy more - it works. So I avoid it. Not that other stores don’t do similarly, but I know that I will fail myself at target - sort of a figure out your vices.
I shop at discount grocery stores. I got to Asian grocery stores for tea because I get way more tea for way less. I go to Aldi for most of my vegetarian foods and also their chicken. Most of their stuff is a fair bit cheaper and I’ve figured out which off brand or Aldi brand stuff I like.
I work in a super fancy office - think of a building with literal halls with marble tile. I get 99% of my clothes from thrift stores. I’m picky - I try to buy only things that I feel good in (not I feel okay, but I feel good) and I have a hard time pushing myself over $10 for almost anything. I dress with a classic style because then I don’t have to chase trends. I mostly just wear black pants and a shirt that looks business casual.
Garage sale - I spent a Saturday driving around the town I grew up in going to garage sales. Saturdays are usually the last day sales are open - they want stuff gone as the reality sets in that whatever isn’t sold is being donated. I filled a paper grocery bag full of clothing for my spouse and paid $1. I’ve hit sales where the person just wanted to be done and said just take everything you want, free. I haggle. I ask if they’d do a deal for a bunch of stuff if it’s a good sale. If there’s something I’m looking for or need - I know the value of the item before I go shopping and I know the value of it to me. I wanted a giant bean bag chair. I valued that at a maximum of $20. The going Facebook marketplace was $50-150. I held out and got one for $7 at a thrift store.
Sign up for VIP stuff at thrift stores and reward programs (assuming it’s free). Don’t buy most holiday decor new - thrift stores can barely sell a christmas tree.
Home Depot and many hardware stores offer free how-to classes - you want to learn how to lay tile? Sign up for a class. Learn to diy what you’re comfortable doing. Some labor and know how is worth paying for. Example: I will not lay tile because I can live with a crooked tile if someone else did it. I can’t if I did it. For my sanity, I would pay for that. Minding - I need that done currently and can’t afford it so it’s just not on the reality list.
Grow some of your own food if you can. Grow lights can be cheap and seeds are cheap. Sometimes you can split a pack with a friend. You can also get free pots and gardening materials online easily. Maybe not the seeds tho. If you hate gardening then don’t bother. What you want matters too.
When you buy stuff - make sure you love it when you can. Stuff you love, you will keep and use. Stuff you feel so-so about might end up being donated next year.
Utilize libraries! They have e-books also and there are so many free apps you can download to read them on. If I’m only gonna read a book once, then I shouldn’t own it. Reality is - I don’t reread that many books. Too many more books to read.
If you’re into cold brew coffee - dark roast Walmart makes just as good as a fancy brand that costs more. Try off brand stuff - it’s often way better or exactly the same. Walmart chips ahoy offbrand is better than chips ahoy. ALDIs version of coconut caramel Girl Scout chocolate cookies taste the same as Girl Scout ones but cost under $2.
Find hobbies that don’t cost you money or cost you very little money. Aquarium fish are not that hobby as I’ve learned the hard way. But I have a beautiful dr who tank so at least there’s that. I volunteered for a while with shelter cats - the ones that are in pet stores. I got kitty snuggles and got to put it on my resume. Can’t afford a pet but want one? Foster - the shelter pays for everything. One of my new hobbies is literally finding free things on Facebook marketplace. It’s great.
If you’re on meds and insurance isn’t covering everything - check out goodrx. Also - check different pharmacies and keep checking. CVS wanted $300 for 1 month of my depression meds. I walked away w/o meds. I went to Costco a week later (no membership needed for specifically their pharmacy) and got those same meds for maybe $10 without insurance.
YouTube can also teach you neat skills. Tumblr can too - I got really into tiny homes - still love them but I can’t ethically keep a Great Dane mix and all my cats in a tiny space - a big part of tiny homes is making sure you have what you need but you have it smart. I gleaned a lot from that obsession. How to have a full wardrobe w 30 pieces of clothing but still variety? It showed it. Most tiny home people are about financial freedom - a lot of them perhaps don’t have a financial background, but it’s about gathering info that works for you.
If you have kids - I do not - but I have a niece. So much free stuff from other people. I think I gave my sister in law about the first years worth of clothing for her kid and it mostly cost me some laundry soap and time with marketplace and stopping for bags of free kids clothes on the side of the road (that I then picked through, washed, and donated the iffy ones). I even got a bouncer thingy that I took apart and cleaned and gave her. Plus a stroller for my mother in law - one of those $300 ones that someone just wanted gone at no cost.
I’ve got home owner savings tricks too if you need them - but let’s be honest, few of us can afford homes. I have one in a super sketchy area that has shot spotter tech to help police respond faster to gunfire. But honestly just lucked out and fell into the job I have now.
Buy quality when you can - I got clearance Clark’s brand shoes for my job - I think they cost me $40? They’ve lasted years. I got thrift store shoes and they are falling apart in less than a year. Those same thrift store shoes during the 5 years that I’ve had my clearance Clark’s would have cost more to replace that 5x over.
Make sure you’re taking care of yourself - eat enough, sleep enough. Your health will affect how you work and live - you matter. I do premier protein shakes in the morning so I get enough protein and also account for my inability to wake up with enough time to make food. I try to bring my lunch to work. Peanut butter sandwiches are a big go-to for me. I’m rather sick of them, but for now, it helps me to save a bit and prioritize things that are more important to me.
I’m trying to think of other stuff. I mean maybe you’re already doing a big load of this or have even cut some of these expenses out. I’ve got more pet saving tricks - pets are something in life that bring me so much joy and happiness so I have them and I try to be responsible and smart with spending on them - but maybe you don’t have pets or don’t want them. I love video games so I have a few systems - mainly PC. I wait for sales for games. I still buy things that are discretionary. I buy “what I want” when I can but I try to make sure it really is something that I want. I wait for game reviews to come out.
I try to find easy recipes online with a focus on budget friendly and quick to make. Preferably with leftovers to avoid a peanut butter sandwich for a day or two. I’m in a Facebook group called “what broke vegans eat.” I go to a butcher to get ground beef because it costs the same but has less gristle and they can give me tips on making different things. Plus I can occasionally splurge on something simple - they have the best in house take home and bake lasagna which last me at least 4-5 days between my spouse and I.
What field are you job-wise? What field or kind of work would you want to be in if you could choose? What kind of hours would you prefer to work? Education level? Are you in the US? Might have some tips around that too. Is there an area you want advice on - like X costs so much, what tips do you have for cost savings with that, etc.
So happy to help. Sorry for the novel.

I mostly agree with this post, but with a caveat that it is not always worth it to keep trying to get a diagnosis and not always worth it to try to get care through official channels, and that sometimes the best outcome for you personally, might be to disengage from the healthcare system and find ways to treat, manage, or live with your condition on your own.
I say this with experience. Early in the pandemic I got COVID, before vaccines were available, and I developed long COVID. I tried seeing my doctor multiple times, and she was entirely useless. The experience was traumatizing because she gaslit me and did not take me seriously and argued with me about what I was experiencing in my body. She gave me prescriptions that I tried and that didn't work and some that caused more side-effects that made me feel worse. She also prescribed medical imaging and I tried repeatedly to navigate interactions between medical imaging services and my doctor's practice, and got nowhere. It was a huge waste of time and also traumatizing. This process also wasted money and it wasted some time and resources of me being driven around by my generous roommate (I was too unwell to drive), sometimes to places that I had a scrip for but then would refuse to see me.
This whole process wasted money, time, other resources expended driving, and emotional energy, and was traumatizing.
The only answers I got were later, online, through self-organized support groups of other people suffering from long COVID, and through self-medication which included asking a local pharmacist about OTC drugs, experimenting with supplements and herbs, changes in diet, and lifestyle interventions. In the end, I became better able to manage the condition, treat aspects of it, and facilitate recovery, and I recovered fully after about 2 years.
In hindsight, I would have been better served by not trying to get answers through the broken (and at the time overwhelmed) medical system.
This is not the first time I have had an experience like this; it's not been limited to the pandemic. I once sought care for a mysterious, uncomfortable, and persistent skin rash that had eluded attempts at self-treatment. Doctors were mostly useless. Even though they were more respectful to me and it was not a traumatizing experience, and they tried their best, I got little out of seeing them and it wasted time and money (both my own copay and the payouts from my insurance.) I never figured out what it was, but it eventually (years later) went away on its own.
I also know friends who have been diagnosed with conditions that have no effective treatment. Some diagnoses, like CFS, POTS, IBS, and many others are effectively non-diagnoses, medical catch-all umbrellas for "we don't know what the heck is going on in your body and don't really know how to treat it". In some cases, the official diagnosis can lead to an insurance authorization and/or prescription for a treatment that ends up helping you. However, in many cases, it doesn't. You might get treatment (sometimes at great cost to you and/or insurance) only to find no benefit, sometimes even with side-effects that leave you worse-off than just doing nothing. (Yes, this has happened to me, in yet a third case that I did not share above!)
I am not saying that avoiding care in the mainstream healthcare system is the right choice for all people.
However, what I am saying is that it definitely is the right choice for some people.
Stop and reflect on your situation. If a significant number of the following apply:
You have sought diagnosis and/or care multiple times, and your experience has been consistently bad.
The trauma or stress caused by your mistreatment by healthcare professionals is much worse than any benefits you have received from care.
You have been diagnosed with, and/or are virtually certain you have a condition which is generally thought to be hard or impossible for the mainstream healthcare system to treat.
You know multiple people with similar struggles to your own, and few to none of them have had a positive results seeking or obtaining care.
You do not need a diagnosis to qualify for a certain type of disability accommodation. (Either because you wouldn't qualify no matter what you do, or because you already are able to get the accommodations you want or need even without an official diagnosis.)
You have achieved some positive results outside the mainstream healthcare system, and these results are greater and/or come at less cost and/or trauma than any benefits you've received within the system.
...you might be better off just not seeking care within the mainstream system. Yes, all of the situations above applied to me, and that's why I disengaged from the system. It's about self-care.
I also want to drive in: not seeking care within the mainstream system does not mean giving up. When I had long COVID, through support groups, through experimentation, and through consultation with healthcare professionals through unofficial channels, and my own research online, I was able to find some treatments that worked.
I realized I could manage my heart rate and breathing issues through reducing my refined carb intake. I realized I could reduce or prevent PEM by being more cautious about peak intensity of exertion and instead ramping up duration of exertion more than intensity. I found a niacin megadose helped with some symptoms. I found I was vitamin D deficient and started taking Vitamin D. I even found alternative treatment that worked. Certain qigong forms seemed to provide exactly the sort of light exercise I needed to re-energize my body while avoiding PEM. Fenugreek tea seemed to lessen nearly all my symptoms and help re-normalize my body. Early on, when I was at my worst, hibiscus tea, which acts as an ACE inhibitor, helped me to feel better and also normalized my blood pressure, which was high.
What are "unofficial channels"? Chatting with the pharmacist at the counter, calling the nurse help line of my insurance, posting in online communities frequented by current or former healthcare professionals but acting outside of their jobs, or talking to friends of mine who were nurses, doctors, nurse-practitioners, researchers, or worked in other aspects of healthcare where they might have some insights into these things.
You can even order your own blood tests if a doctor refuses, and pay for them out-of-pocket. I did, and I'm so glad I did because that's how I discovered my vitamin D deficiency.
So I agree with the OP about you still being disabled even without a diagnosis, but I do not think that continuing to seek a diagnosis and/or care within the medical system is the best decision for all people. For some of us, we need to learn when to cut our losses and disengage, for our own protection.
friendly reminder you dont need a diagnosis to be in disability spaces, as an example im in constant pain and fatigue, have migraines every week and my joints hurts to a point I can't write, but since familiar gaslighting/medical trauma and the fact that im an indigenous, brown skin fat man a diagnosis is fucking hard (but im in my way! :)) , but i still deserve a safe space to talk about my experiences and to feel valuable and supported.
never feel like youre interrupting someone's space or that you shouldn't be here cause you dont have a diagnosis, disabilities existed before diagnosis

So many generation wars on Facebook with posts about how "millennials and gen-z don't want to work" or elder generations talking about how they had to "bust their asses" to get everything they have now. Like...
I'm just trying to figure out why people are treating people who "don't want to work" as though they're in the wrong for that? Lmao working is HARD. You have to deal with people who don't care about your well-being at all. Depending on what type of work you do, it could be physically demanding and / or exhausting - even desk jobs simply because sitting in a chair all day is bad for the body. Also depending on what you're doing, you might not even be contributing to society in a way that's in alignment with your personal beliefs - I work at a bank. I spend my whole day supporting an application that traders use to make more money for themselves, corporations, and the bank itself. So I don't feel like I'm really making a difference in anything. But I took the job because I need to pay my bills. And I keep the job so that I can have insurance to help me with my incessant medical issues. All of which make me tired AF. Which results in me not having the energy to find something more in line with my values. But also the things that are more in line with my values don't really pay well enough for me to live comfortably. So there's that. If I had the health to work multiple jobs I would do it that way but I don't.
Why would anyone want to have to experience any of these things? Even the elder generations themselves - having to bust your ass for the things you wanted / needed? You wanted to do that?
I don't have a problem exchanging goods or services for the things I need in life. I just think that pretending that working harder than anyone should have to is desirable is ridiculous. Especially the way things are valued financially - at least in this country...it makes it really hard to feel motivated to devote 40+ hours a week of your time to working. Like no, I don't *want* to do that. And I'm not less of a person for admitting that. Especially since we live in a society in which people don't want to *pay* people what they are worth in terms of what they're contributing to society. A society in which a certain subgroup of people get to determine the value of another person's creations and contributions.
Teachers aren't getting paid enough. Entertainers...they probably aren't getting paid what they used to. Farmers are probably not getting paid what they deserve. Libraries have to fight for every dollar they spend. Artists may or may not get paid what they deserve - I'm seeing some videos about how they need to supplement their income with a 9 to 5 which, in some cases, can take away from their ability to create. Artisans have to defend their pricing choices all the time because people don't value their work, probably because of industrialization and the fact that most consumers are probably tight on what they can buy because they, too, aren't getting paid enough. So they can only afford to purchase the mass made, low quality stuff.
I could probably go on but I'm tired. I just wish that we focused on sustaining one another, caring for one another the way we did before industrialization and the advancement of technology. Not that things were perfect back then, or that technology is bad. The jury is still out for me on the industrialization front ;_; like yay for making things easier but if it's at the expense of the planet and at the expense of the health and well-being of communities as a whole...not so much.
I am just thinking about the times when people could get paid for hands-on work with measurable, tangible outcomes, rather than sitting in front of a computer screen doing stuff virtually all day that ultimately would be absolutely meaningless if something turned off all the electricity in the world suddenly. We are making machines do everything for us and, as a result, we are devaluing the human more and more every single day. We are actively coding our way out of existence. Or at least, the working class is getting coded out of existence.
Which brings me to something else - the fact that there *is* a "working" class that is shamed for not wanting to work as if there isn't an entire class of people who don't exploit the working class so that they don't have to work themselves 🤦🏾‍♀️. The hell? "Nobody wants to work anymore-" no YOU don't wanna work anymore and so you're trying to make me feel bad about wanting to live a more balanced life instead of working myself to the bone so that you can sit there in your fancy clothes and sunglasses on the beach in a far away land instead of doing your own work. It's usually managers or store owners (or rich people who don't want to do housework or other things) complaining about people not wanting to work, as though they are there wanting to do the work they're trying to hire people to do. If you wanted to do it you wouldn't be trying to hire someone else to do it. So you don't want to work either. At least not in that role. So how do you get to treat people worse for not wanting to do the same shit you don't want to do?
Like can we stop acting like working hard for something is glorious? It's not. Maybe I feel that way because I'm disabled. And I'm constantly fighting ableist thoughts and comments from others who want to say things like "this disorder is not an excuse" or "I have this disorder and I climbed Mount Everest and made it back to work on time so you're just lazy" - like...I don't even know anymore. No, I don't want to work through feeling like absolute garbage every single day. I don't want to disregard my mental health to make someone else richer. I don't want to do that.

Exploring Reverse Mortgages for Seniors: Is It the Right Choice for You?
As retirement approaches, many seniors seek ways to boost their finances without compromising their quality of life. One option worth considering is a reverse mortgage. It’s a unique financial tool, but it’s important to understand how it works and whether it fits your needs.
What is a Reverse Mortgage?
A reverse mortgage allows homeowners aged 62 and older to convert part of their home equity into cash. Unlike a traditional mortgage, you don’t make monthly payments. Instead, the loan is repaid when you sell your home, move out, or pass away. The most popular type is the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), which is insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA).
Key Features:
Eligibility: Must be 62+, live in the home as your primary residence, and have significant equity.
No Monthly Payments: You don’t make monthly mortgage payments; the loan is repaid when you sell the home or pass away.
Payment Options: Receive funds as a lump sum, monthly payments, line of credit, or a combination.
Interest and Fees: Interest and fees add up over time, which can decrease your home equity.
Advantages of Reverse Mortgages
1. No Monthly Payments: One of the biggest perks is not having to worry about monthly mortgage payments. This can be a huge relief if you’re on a fixed income.
2. Tax-Free Income: The money you get from a reverse mortgage is generally tax-free, which can help stretch your retirement funds further.
3. Stay in Your Home: You get to stay in your home and keep the title, as long as you meet the loan obligations like property taxes, insurance, and maintenance.
4. Flexible Options: Choose how you receive the funds—whether in a lump sum, monthly payments, a line of credit, or a mix.
Potential Drawbacks
1. Costs and Fees: Reverse mortgages come with costs and fees, including closing costs, servicing fees, and insurance premiums. Over time, these can add up.
2. Reduced Inheritance: Since the loan is repaid by selling the home, there may be less equity left for your heirs.
3. Financial Responsibilities: You’re still responsible for property taxes, insurance, and upkeep. If you fail to meet these obligations, you could face foreclosure.
4. Impact on Benefits: While reverse mortgage income doesn’t affect Social Security or Medicare, it might impact Medicaid or other needs-based programs.
Is a Reverse Mortgage Right for You?
Deciding if a reverse mortgage is right for you depends on your financial situation, goals, and other available options.
1. Evaluate Your Needs: Consider your current financial needs and future plans. A reverse mortgage can provide a steady income, but weigh it against the long-term impact on your equity and estate.
2. Home Value: The amount you can borrow depends on your home’s value, your age, and current interest rates. An appraisal will determine the home’s market value.
3. Explore Alternatives: Look into other options like downsizing, home equity loans, or refinancing. Each has its own pros and cons.
4. Get Professional Advice: Talk to financial advisors, housing counselors, and family members. A clear understanding of the terms and implications is essential.
Real-Life Examples
Scenario 1: Supplementing Income: Jane, a 70-year-old widow, uses a reverse mortgage to supplement her Social Security income, allowing her to cover medical expenses without financial stress.
Scenario 2: Home Improvements: Tom and Susan, both 65, take out a reverse mortgage to renovate their home for better accessibility, choosing a line of credit to fund the project as needed.
Scenario 3: Preserving Savings: Mark, 75, opts for a reverse mortgage to avoid dipping into his savings for daily expenses, preserving his retirement funds for future needs.
Conclusion
A reverse mortgage can be a helpful financial tool for seniors, offering a way to tap into home equity without monthly mortgage payments. However, it’s crucial to weigh the benefits and drawbacks and consider your long-term financial goals.
At SouthRiverMortgage, we understand that navigating financial decisions in retirement can be complex. Building a Safety Net with John Moakler: Emergency Funds and Insurance Planning for Medical Emergencies
As doctors, ensuring financial security is paramount, especially in the face of unexpected medical emergencies. Building a robust safety net through emergency funds and insurance planning is crucial for safeguarding against unforeseen financial challenges that may arise due to illness, injury, or disability. In this blog, we will delve into the importance of emergency funds and insurance planning for doctors, providing essential guidance on how to build a safety net to protect against medical emergencies and maintain financial stability.
Understanding the Need for Emergency Funds
Medical emergencies can strike at any time, disrupting your ability to work and generate income while simultaneously increasing expenses associated with medical treatment and recovery. Having an emergency fund provides a financial cushion to cover essential expenses such as mortgage or rent payments, utilities, groceries, and medical bills during times of crisis. Emergency funds offer peace of mind and financial security, allowing you to focus on recovery without worrying about financial strain.
Start by assessing your monthly expenses and determining the amount needed to cover three to six months' worth of living expenses in case of a medical emergency. Set aside funds in a dedicated savings account or money market fund that is easily accessible in case of emergencies. Make regular contributions to your emergency fund and prioritize building reserves to ensure that you have sufficient funds to weather unexpected financial setbacks.
Establishing an Emergency Fund
Establishing an emergency fund is a proactive step towards financial preparedness and resilience in the face of medical emergencies. Set realistic savings goals based on your income, expenses, and financial obligations, and commit to making regular contributions to your emergency fund. Consider automating contributions by setting up automatic transfers from your checking account to your savings account each month to ensure consistent savings habits.
Keep your emergency fund in a separate account that is easily accessible in case of emergencies, but avoid dipping into it for non-essential expenses or discretionary purchases. Periodically review and reassess your emergency fund savings goals to account for changes in your financial situation or life circumstances. By establishing and maintaining an emergency fund, you can mitigate the financial impact of medical emergencies and maintain financial stability during times of crisis.
Importance of Health Insurance
Health insurance is a critical component of financial planning for doctors, providing coverage for medical expenses resulting from illness, injury, or disability. Invest in comprehensive health insurance coverage that includes benefits such as hospitalization, surgery, prescription drugs, and preventive care to protect against unexpected medical costs. Review your health insurance policy regularly to ensure that it meets your needs and provides adequate coverage for you and your family members.
Consider additional insurance coverage such as disability insurance, which provides income replacement in the event that you are unable to work due to illness or injury. Disability insurance offers financial protection against the loss of income and helps maintain your standard of living during periods of disability. Evaluate your insurance needs with the help of professionals such as John Moakler and explore options for supplemental coverage to ensure comprehensive protection against medical emergencies and related financial risks.
Disability Insurance for Income Protection
Disability insurance is a critical component of insurance planning for doctors, providing income protection in the event of illness or injury that prevents you from working. Invest in a comprehensive disability insurance policy that offers adequate coverage for your income level and specialty, ensuring that you are financially protected in case of disability. Review the terms and conditions of your disability insurance policy carefully to understand coverage limits, waiting periods, and benefit duration.
Consider purchasing a disability insurance policy with own-occupation coverage, which pays benefits if you are unable to perform the duties of your own medical specialty, rather than any occupation. Own-occupation coverage provides greater flexibility and protection for doctors whose ability to work may be compromised due to illness or injury. Work with an experienced financial planner such as John Moakler to evaluate your options and select the most suitable policy for your needs.
Life Insurance for Financial Security
Life insurance is another essential component of insurance planning for doctors, providing financial security for your loved ones in the event of your death. Invest in a life insurance policy that offers sufficient coverage to meet the financial needs of your dependents, such as mortgage payments, living expenses, education costs, and other financial obligations. Evaluate your life insurance needs based on factors such as your income, assets, debts, and family circumstances, and choose a policy that aligns with your coverage needs and budget.
Consider purchasing a term life insurance policy, which offers coverage for a specific period, such as 10, 20, or 30 years, at an affordable premium. Term life insurance provides temporary protection during critical years when financial responsibilities are highest, such as raising children or paying off a mortgage. Alternatively, consider permanent life insurance options such as whole life or universal life insurance under the guidance of professionals such as John Moakler, which offer lifelong coverage and may include cash value accumulation and investment features.
Long-Term Care Insurance for Future Needs
Long-term care insurance is designed to cover the costs of extended care services such as nursing home care, assisted living facilities, and in-home care for individuals who are unable to perform activities of daily living due to illness, injury, or cognitive impairment. Invest in long-term care insurance to protect against the high costs of long-term care services and preserve your assets and financial independence in retirement.
Evaluate your long-term care insurance needs based on factors such as your age, health status, family history, and financial resources, and choose a policy that provides comprehensive coverage for your long-term care needs. Consider purchasing long-term care insurance while you are young and healthy to secure coverage at a lower premium and ensure that you have adequate protection in place for future needs. Work with an experienced financial planner such as John Moakler to explore your options and select the most suitable policy for your needs.
