ok tumblr i finished bury our bones in the midnight soil and all i have to say is that there’s so much to be said about this damn book
the writing itself is gorgeous and poetic and there’s something so genuinely unique about all three POVs that it’s super telling of each of them
there were points in time where, in public at the gym, i audible gasped, hit my head into the parts and genuinely reacted out loud
it is that book
if you haven’t preordered it, you should
#bury our bones in the midnight soil#ve schwab#i’m telling you right now#there’s so much to talk about with this book#and while i cannot really say anything#because spoilers#this post really encapsulates it all#i need to edit my original review on goodreads later once we get closer to the actual release maybe#but#this book…#is like addie larue#but doubled#mercurialtextpost

No one gets nemesis and hate-based relationships like V. E. Schwab. Nobody.
It's about the intimacy. It's about the knowing one another even if you don't like one another. It's about how respect doesn't necessarily soften into affection or friendliness. Or conversely, how the deeper the friendship, the more twisted the hate once it's corrupted. It's about your reflection being the most like you but also your polar opposite. It's about having someone who fits the negative space in your life like you fit theirs.

reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and i can't stop giggling because i was like two pages into chapter 2 and was thinking to myself like "so is this a Dorian Gray situation?" and then two paragraphs down the character makes a Dorian Gray reference. me and the author are on the exact same wavelength. also, the writing is astonishingly good like genuinely awestruck at how incredibly it paints a picture.

I still have to read the rest of the series lmao but Jacqueline Carey has so much control over her prose that a lot of her copy cats don't and it is rather telling that her writing is a lot more comprehensible than a lot of fantasy books that boasts as having "good" lyrical prose.
#elaine talks#like...when i went into kushiel's dart i was dreading it to be the incomprehensible nonsense as addie larue is#but it isn't?#its not just an ad lib of words that sound good together

Made a tier list of all V.E. Schwab's books—there's s few miscellaneous things I haven't read, but it's fun to hammer out a ranking. I was intentionally harsher than I normally am, but to be clear, I've enjoyed all of them (except ExtraOrdinary)! They have so much range sometimes it feels like comparing apples to oranges.
Ik lots of people haven't read all her books, but feel free to rb with your tier list!
#i promise to contain myself and not get mad if y'all are very wrong <3#sneaking tftop in there got me so excited like. NEXT WEEK.#ve schwab#v e schwab#shades of magic#vicious#villains series#monsters of verity#the invisible life of addie larue#cassidy blake#gallant#the near witch

2, 4, 12, 23! i think i got one of those numbers wrong actually but i can't remember oops
2. Did you reread anything? What?
I did not! I started Wilson's translation of the Iliad, but I don't know if that counts as a reread.
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
Ann Leckie for sure. I read a few novels from T Kingfisher, and while I enjoyed them, I can't say they made much of an impact on me. I'm looking at my list now, though, and wondering if there aren't a few authors I shouldn't give another shot to. Their books didn't thrill me, but I did enjoy reading them, and maybe they have another that might get me all heart-eyes (Tea Obreht and Nghi Vo specifically).
12. Any books that disappointed you?
Sadly, I do have a deep hater's heart, as much as I wish I didn't. Happily, this year I had fewer DNFs than last year. I already mentioned that Remarkably Bright Creatures just wasn't good, I also DNF'ed Barbara Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead about halfway through. The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell was a book that others liked that I thought I would, too, but I just did not. I didn't care for the main character, and Cornwell did this thing I hate where he repeats inane sentiments way too many times, like "destiny is everything."
23. What’s the fastest time it took you to read a book?
The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo and The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion were apparently both read within a day.
#2023 was a MUCH bigger year of hating for me so I think that's good#that's growth#I didn't one-star anything this year it looks like#even if remarkbaly bright creatures only got two stars because I DID manage to finish it and I felt like that counted for something#salt and fortune is a very short book#can't remember if magical thinking was that short? maybe it was#or maybe I didn't put it in my goodreads until I finished it? lol#I was certain I dnf'ed something else but I cannot find it so oh well!#oh wait found it#it was the dearly beloved#I just really didn't want to read about these kinds of people i this time period at all#like I've had enough of this specific kind of setting#OH the invisible life of addie larue#man the writing was awfulllll I barely got into that book at all unreadable#okay I KNEW I was a hater goodreads is just really weirdly organizing my books for me

It's a travesty that I can't reblog gifsets of books.
#this post is about#the invisible life of addie larue#I am lost in this book#and when I was lost in The Acolyte#there were gifs and photosets and actor interviews#but no such luck for the books I love#well#except for the folk of the air series#there are some real gems in the fota tags#but most of the fanart for this book is so focused on the wrong part?#Which to be fair was also a problem with The Acolyte#like I understand this is the 'inhuman villain x human hero' website#so i don't know what else I expected anybody to take away from this book#certainly not the moral and emotional complexity of the characters or the situations they're put in#or the way it follows through on the implications of its premise#or the philosophical questions it begs you to ask#or the existential pit it draws you to look into#or the sheer bloody-minded downright spiteful amount of hope it provides#it's almost a parable#the girl that smiled into the darkness and the darkness that smiled back#the woman who is so stubbornly determined to live that death itself can't help but love her even as she hates it#the woman who valued her life so much she gave up everything to keep it#and the man who loved her so well that she gave it up all over again to save him#to have complete freedom with no one to share#the heaven and the hell of it#God#this book has ruined me#i can't remember the last time I felt so haunted by a story#I added some of the author's other works to my library app#but tbh
