ok tumblr i finished bury our bones in the midnight soil and all i have to say is that there’s so much to be said about this damn book
the writing itself is gorgeous and poetic and there’s something so genuinely unique about all three POVs that it’s super telling of each of them
there were points in time where, in public at the gym, i audible gasped, hit my head into the parts and genuinely reacted out loud
it is that book
if you haven’t preordered it, you should

No one gets nemesis and hate-based relationships like V. E. Schwab. Nobody.
It's about the intimacy. It's about the knowing one another even if you don't like one another. It's about how respect doesn't necessarily soften into affection or friendliness. Or conversely, how the deeper the friendship, the more twisted the hate once it's corrupted. It's about your reflection being the most like you but also your polar opposite. It's about having someone who fits the negative space in your life like you fit theirs.

reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and i can't stop giggling because i was like two pages into chapter 2 and was thinking to myself like "so is this a Dorian Gray situation?" and then two paragraphs down the character makes a Dorian Gray reference. me and the author are on the exact same wavelength. also, the writing is astonishingly good like genuinely awestruck at how incredibly it paints a picture.

I still have to read the rest of the series lmao but Jacqueline Carey has so much control over her prose that a lot of her copy cats don't and it is rather telling that her writing is a lot more comprehensible than a lot of fantasy books that boasts as having "good" lyrical prose.

Made a tier list of all V.E. Schwab's books—there's s few miscellaneous things I haven't read, but it's fun to hammer out a ranking. I was intentionally harsher than I normally am, but to be clear, I've enjoyed all of them (except ExtraOrdinary)! They have so much range sometimes it feels like comparing apples to oranges.
Ik lots of people haven't read all her books, but feel free to rb with your tier list!

2, 4, 12, 23! i think i got one of those numbers wrong actually but i can't remember oops
2. Did you reread anything? What?
I did not! I started Wilson's translation of the Iliad, but I don't know if that counts as a reread.
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
Ann Leckie for sure. I read a few novels from T Kingfisher, and while I enjoyed them, I can't say they made much of an impact on me. I'm looking at my list now, though, and wondering if there aren't a few authors I shouldn't give another shot to. Their books didn't thrill me, but I did enjoy reading them, and maybe they have another that might get me all heart-eyes (Tea Obreht and Nghi Vo specifically).
12. Any books that disappointed you?
Sadly, I do have a deep hater's heart, as much as I wish I didn't. Happily, this year I had fewer DNFs than last year. I already mentioned that Remarkably Bright Creatures just wasn't good, I also DNF'ed Barbara Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead about halfway through. The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell was a book that others liked that I thought I would, too, but I just did not. I didn't care for the main character, and Cornwell did this thing I hate where he repeats inane sentiments way too many times, like "destiny is everything."
23. What’s the fastest time it took you to read a book?
The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo and The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion were apparently both read within a day.
