Ratan Tata
Indian business tycoon who turned his family’s Tata Group into a global player, and invested heavily in British industry
Ratan Tata, who has died aged 86, was India’s most celebrated industrialist. He modernised the unwieldy business empire founded by his great grandfather in the 19th century and internationalised it. In the process he spread his interests into western countries, with mixed results.
For the UK, that included the £271m purchase of the Tetley Group in 2000, followed more controversially by the acquisition of the steel company Corus for £6.2bn in 2007. Then, in 2008, Tata, himself a car enthusiast, added the troubled Jaguar Land Rover motor business for a further £1.75bn.
He joined the family firm, Tata Steel, in 1962. Educated in the US, and newly qualified as an architect, the young Tata had, he said, no intention of returning to India. But family ties won out. When his ailing grandmother, Navajbai, who had raised him, asked him to return he did so. He was soon promoted, building his reputation with tough reorganisation, followed by more troubleshooting at the electronics and textile companies.
In 1981, he was made chairman of Tata Industries, and found himself confronting an assortment of separate businesses, with different ownership patterns over which there was little formal control. He made a blueprint for reorganisation, having spent time at the Harvard Business School, but it was rejected after opposition from semi-autonomous bosses.
However, in 1991, the 81-year-old patriarch of the group, JRD Tata, chose him as his successor as the overall chairman. Asked why, he replied: “He has a modern mind.”
Tata soon demonstrated it with a tough programme of reshaping that, against continuing opposition, brought closures, job reductions, and the departure of the heads of the steel, hotel and chemical businesses.
He began to focus more on brands and less on heavy industry, and he benefited from the deregulation of Indian industry championed by Rajiv Gandhi. As part of it, he took the company more heavily into the motor industry. Tata lorries already dominated Indian highways, but now he moved into the car business in line with his own enthusiasms. While always seen as a man of modest habits, he had his own lovingly maintained collection of high-powered and classic cars, and delighted in driving them along Mumbai’s Marine Drive most Sundays.
Tata produced what was called “the first Indian car”, designed by and for Indians, in 1998. Ratan did some of the first drawings himself. The Tata Indica was a success. But when he went further a decade later, and the company conceived the Nano, a tiny saloon described as the world’s most affordable car at a price of about £2,000, the project failed. Such a cheap car was not enticing even to those “on two wheels” whom he hoped to attract.
In 1999 Tata had travelled to Detroit to discuss the sale of the motor business to Ford, only to be asked why his firm had gone into the passenger car business when it clearly knew nothing about it. Later he would turn the tables, buying underperforming Jaguar Land Rover from Ford and reviving it.
With sell-offs and cutbacks, Tata reorganised the group into 98 operating companies from more than 250, reducing the labour force by more than a third. He forged alliances with foreign companies and went into information technology.
He stepped down in 2012, observing the compulsory retirement rule he had himself introduced, but was still regarded as “chairman emeritus” and was brought back unhappily for a few months when his successor was sacked four years later.
His most shocking day came in 2008, when terrorists took over the Tatas’ Taj Mahal hotel on the front at Mumbai with great loss of life. The company has continued to support staff affected and the families of those who died.
Ratan was born in Mumbai, into the large Parsi Tata family, whose wealth came from a scattered collection of businesses including textiles, hotels, engineering, steel and tea. His father, Naval, had been adopted by the son of the founder, Jamsetji Tata. After Naval and his wife, Soonoo, separated when Ratan was seven, the child was brought up with his younger brother, Jimmy, by his grandmother in a grand Tata mansion in central Mumbai.
Aged 17 he was sent to the US to attend Riverdale Country school in New York City, from where he entered Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He studied engineering before switching to architecture, graduating in 1959. He worked as an architect for a while in Los Angeles before returning to India, and Tata Steel.
In his 20 years at the helm, Tata’s sales grew by 22% annually and its international revenues rose from a quarter to 58% of the total, while Tata Consultancy Services became Asia’s largest software company.
His British investments have been among his less successful. Corus was bought for an over-the-top £6bn just before the global financial crash devastated the industry. Tata claimed it as “the first big step that Indian industry has taken as a global player”. It was later described by a senior Tata executive as “worthless”. The firm is currently negotiating terms of new investment at Port Talbot, which would be accompanied by hundreds of redundancies, while huge plants on Teesside and Scunthorpe have already been closed or sold for a nominal sum.
Jaguar Land Rover was initially a happier story. Tata’s major investment, including in research and development, made the company for a while the largest foreign investor in British industry. But eight years of profits have been followed by losses since 2018.
Surveying the British scene in 2011, Tata told the Times: “Nobody seems to want to exert the effort to make the UK truly competitive. It’s a work ethic issue. In my experience in both Corus and JLR, nobody is willing to go the extra mile.”
He was a major figure in the international business community, close to US politicians as well as the Indian government, advising the former prime ministers Gordon Brown and David Cameron, and sitting on the boards of multinational institutions.
He was also known as a major philanthropist. Many of the Tata companies were owned through trusts he chaired, and huge sums were provided for medical research and university projects both in India and abroad, particularly in the US, where a number of campuses have buildings bearing his name.
A softly spoken man, renowned for his courtesy, he never married, although he described himself as having come close four times. He was known for living modestly, although his recreations included flying his private jet and driving his collection of expensive cars, as well as a speedboat. He was noted for his love of dogs. The Tata headquarters in Mumbai had kennels and made provision for street dogs, and he was a donor to canine charities. In 2014 he was made GBE.
He is survived by Jimmy, by his stepmother, Simone, a half brother, Noel, and two half sisters, Shireen and Deanna.
🔔 Ratan Tata, businessman, born 28 December 1937; died 9 October 2024

In the Bleak Midwinter
The sequel to this story: The Masks We Wear
Ch.3 Pairing: Simon 'Ghost' Riley x F!Reader Chapters: 3/5 Notes: Sorry for the delay! We're back, folks! Jag is back home trying to repress the thots of her man-who's-not-her-man Simon, our boy pays her a visit, it's not creepy if ur both pining for each other, right?
Part One | Part Two | Part Four | Part Five | AO3 | MASTERLIST
San Francisco was cold this time of year. It was foggy and wet outside and you could just make out the bridge from your apartment. The wind rapped against your windows at this height. Below you, cars made their way through their morning commute; oblivious to your observing. Their headlights were fuzzy in the pre-dawn dark. You covered your nakedness with your plush robe and went to fix a coffee.
It had been over a month since you'd come back. Your work with the 141 was finished: target neutralized. Laswell wanted you in the States immediately after the mission to discuss the details in person. Even though you had told everything to Price and was sure he had already relayed it to her, she was the one who wrote the checks. Two days later you were on a flight home.
Ghost was considerably better by the time you left. It was a grueling 24 hours after you brought him in; the doctors worked around the clock to stabilize him. Even though you yourself could barely move, with every muscle fiber on fire from overexertion, you still managed to wait outside his room—with Soap and Price equally as anxious—until the final doctor was finished and you were allowed inside. You don’t know why you spent that last night in Ghost’s hospital room, but if that was to be the final time you saw the man, you wanted to keep a part of him for yourself. Wanted to commit every detail of him to your memory so that when you were alone across the Atlantic you had something to fall back on. A souvenir of what never was. It was unhealthy, sure, but when had you ever had healthy relationships? They were always fleeting, temporary things. Always kept at an arms length. Vulnerability didn’t fit in with your line of work.
And the memory had served you well over the last month—wrapped in your sheets, down on your stomach with your hand between your thighs, whispering his name into your pillow until you clenched around your fingers so tightly, you wished it was him. When you dreamt those nights it was always the same: of snow and red and blonde lashes. When you woke, the bed always felt a little too empty. Just need to get it out of your system so you can move on.
You tried to be present, enjoying the money you made out with and the tranquility of your home. Put Jaguar in a box and suppressed her. Forced yourself to forget the foreign men and their warmth and the comforts of Task Force 141—of camaraderie. You allowed yourself to indulge in your secret fantasy only on occasions, filling the rest of your time with classy bars and uninteresting people. Pretending at a civilian life until the next job came to take you away for months and gift you with new scars to heal.
But try as you might to compartmentalize the 141 and Kokshetau, your mind would still wander back to your time in the bleak midwinter with your towering ghost.
After your coffee and morning routine, you put on an outfit and decided to take a walk. Gloomy weather always put you in a pensive mood and being outside was the best way through it—you liked the way the sensory nature of it kept you grounded in the present. Wandering for the sake of wandering allowed you to discover hidden things in your city. Secrets in plain sight, there if you only cared to look. You rode your building’s elevator down in silence.
When you first noticed it, you were cutting through Little Saigon. Sunday mornings here were quiet, with only a few vendor sweeping the fronts of their shops. But you felt that familiar heat on the back of your neck—a prickle against your spine that made your hairs stand up and your pulse quicken. Some primal vestige for danger. He wouldn’t be here. He didn’t know where you lived. None of them did. You’d left without leaving any contact information; never made your city available to the team. But when you turned around you found yourself standing alone among the lingering, grey mist. It seemed your phantom had come back to haunt you.
Crossing Turk Street, you hopped on the bus. This one would take you deeper into the city. If it was him, your ghost, he’d find you again. Part of you delighted in this game of cat and mouse. A dance with the forbidden. You looked out the window wondering if he was watching you still. Somehow you knew he was.
Taking the exit before the park, you walked another few minutes before seeing the greenery. It was a huge expanse in the city—the perfect setting for seclusion among three million people. A nice place to hide; a nice place to be found. The fog coated your beret and trench coat with a fine layer of mist. The clack of your boot-heels on the concrete was muffled by the damp. A couple of stray joggers passed you on your walk to the Conservatory of Flowers—it’s Victorian design was fitting for today’s circumstance.
Inside the conservatory was a sharp contrast to the brumal park: it was balmy and humid, like a portal to some remote jungle on the equator. The artificial insect and bird sounds were a nice touch as you walked in complete solitude, admiring the various tropical flora. It wasn’t long before you could feel his presence again, even if you didn’t hear him, like you were two particles entangled. You opened a door leading further into the conservatory.
Water lotuses floated on a glass-like pond in the center of the room. You stopped to admire them, leather-gloved hands resting on the railing.
“Did you know the lotus is a symbolic flower used throughout many cultures? The Buddhists see it as the flower of awakening; the Egyptians, a flower of rebirth—because each night it retreats into murky waters and each morning emerges, perfectly clean.”
Ghost finally appeared next to you, footsteps silent as smoke; looming. His massive frame filled the corner of your vision as you continued to watch the placid water. His large gloved hands were dangerously close to yours on the balustrade.
“You found me,” you said.
Then you turned to look at him. His face was covered by a knitted black balaclava; his hoodie pulled up from underneath a wool pea coat. But his eyes, warm and as intoxicating as you remember, held your gaze. There was curiosity between you—like two jungle cats sussing out newfound territory.
“What are you doing here, Simon?”
His eyes traced your face languidly.
“Thought we made a deal.” That basso, Manchester accent sent a heat straight to your core. He took a step closer. “And I’ve held up my end.”
A tentative hand hovered over his heart for a second before you rested the entire breadth down. You felt his body stiffen but also his heart's strong beating under your palm. You wanted to reach in and claim it.
“That you did.” You had to drag your eyes back up to his. It was a dangerous, stupid game you were playing but here you were, unable to stop what had already been set in motion the moment you picked up Laswell’s call all those months ago.
“Join me for some tea?” You removed your hand, already missing his warmth. "Delighted to."

Cherished moments
The winter’s been horrible for both of them. For Sherlock it started in January. He finally managed to get covid now that the pandemic’s almost over.
Once he’d recovered, it was John’s turn. Working his arse off at the hospital for the last two years without catching the virus, was nothing but a miracle. John’s the world’s worst patient, but luckily it didn’t last as long as Sherlock’s illness. Small blessings.
Not being able to travel or do anything remotely interesting for what feels like decades, Sherlock’s decided to whisk John away for their fifth wedding anniversary. They haven’t celebrated much over the years, just a nice dinner followed by a classical concert. Sherlock always decides where to dine, while John picks the concert. It’s a win-win situation.
***
Sherlock’s sits at the desk when John comes home.
“Ah, John! Just the one,” Sherlock exclaims.
“Hello, gorgeous,” John smiles and kisses the top of Sherlock’s head.
Sherlock makes room for John to climb onto his lap for a proper snog.
“What are you up to?” John asks, a bit breathless.
“A surprise. Can you take some days off the week after next? Say Monday until Thursday,” Sherlock inquires.
“A surprise, eh? Well, I’ve worked up some goodwill I think, so that should be fine,” John says, massaging Sherlock’s scalp.
Sherlock closes his eyes and purrs with delight.
“Sounds like a jaguar again,” John murmurs and sucks at Sherlock’s bottom lip, which elicits another purr.
John sits back a little, stroking Sherlock’s shoulders and down his arms.
“So, my beautiful husband. Does this surprise has anything to do with our wedding anniversary?”
“My clever husband,” Sherlock smirks.
“Can I decide anything, or is it only you this year?” John inquires.
“Only me. For now,” Sherlock states lazily, reaches out for John and pulls him in for a deep kiss.
***
Despite the tediousness of the last week, it’s all worth it when John realises they’re going on a private plane. Working for Mycroft on occasion has its benefits, Sherlock admits.
“Gosh, this really is a lovely way to travel,” John sighs contended and reaches out for Sherlock’s hand.
“Indeed,” Sherlock agrees.
“Are you going to tell me where your taking me, then?” John asks, lacing his fingers with Sherlock’s.
“It has many names. The city of clichés. The city of love. The most romantic city in the world, cover most of it, I think.”
“Are you serious? We’re going to Paris?”
John beams at Sherlock and Sherlock can’t resist the urge to lean in and kiss John softly.
“We are,” he whispers in John’s ear. “I’ve…um…borrowed Mycroft’s card when I made the hotel reservation. Hôtel de l´Abbaye in Saint-Germain-Des-Prés. It’s a suite, obviously, two floors with a balcony overseeing the famous green garden. Looks quite promising on the web site.”
“You are amazing,” John breathes and cups Sherlock’s face, tracing both thumbs over his cheekbones.
Sherlock leans into John’s touch when John moves his hands to pull Sherlock’s hair just the way he loves it. He moans and closes his eyes.
“My marvellous John,” he murmurs.
***
A black car waits on the tarmac. As they descend the stairs from the plane, a chauffeur emerges in full uniform.
“Bonsoir, messieurs,” the man greets them.
John knows Sherlock’s fluent in French, and John knows a few phrases himself, but he’s never got the pronunciation quite right. He’ll lean on Sherlock for that. Besides, he loves hearing Sherlock speaking foreign languages, French in particular.
They sit like besotted teenagers in the back seat of the car, fingers interlaced, thighs pressing against the other, alternately looking out the windows and exchanging soft kisses.
Once they arrive at the hotel, John’s a bit dazed. It’s almost like he’s participating in a romantic film. Sherlock behaves like a proper Frenchman, with gesturing hands, flawless language, bespoke suit and grace like a dancer. John just stares at him with awe. It’s similar to his behaviour at crime scenes, but also completely different. There’s no one who calls him names or glares at him with contempt.
The photos from the web site didn’t lie. Their suite’s exquisite and luxurious. John walks around to survey the spacious room.
“I’ve ordered room service,” Sherlock calls from downstairs.
“Perfect,” John retorts and opens the door to the balcony.
The temperature is still quite comfortable, and the air smells of lavender. John sighs happily and startles a bit when familiar arms caress him.
“I didn’t mean to spook you, John,” Sherlock says quietly and kisses his temple.
“It’s fine, love. I was just a bit lost in thought. This is…er…I…”
John turns in Sherlock’s arms and looks at him with shiny eyes. Sherlock cocks an eyebrow at him, silently asking if everything’s all right.
“Got a bit overwhelmed,” John says sheepishly. “I’ve always wanted to go to Paris, you know. You making my dream come through just hit me, and this beautiful place is perfect. Being here with you is perfect. Thank you.”
Their lips meet and John whimpers desperate, grabbing Sherlock’s plush arse while sucking at his bottom lip, then moving his lips to the long neck.
“How much time do we have before the food arrives,” John asks hoarsely.
“Enough,” Sherlock pants and pulls John tighter.
***
They have breakfast on the balcony. The morning is warm, and it’s partly clouded. A perfect day for exploring the city.
To John’s surprise Sherlock concurs to take a trip with a double decker bus. John wants to see all the famous sites but doesn’t want to spend all day walking long distances or taking the metro. They sit in the back at the top of the bus, which is only half full. Between sites, Sherlock deduces the other passengers to John’s amusement.
A few metres from the bus stop, a familiar car waits for them. John sends Sherlock a quizzical look.
“Patience,” Sherlock mutters, grabs John’s hand and steers him toward the car.
The chauffeur, Antoine, clearly knows where they’re headed. John’s too happy to bother pestering Sherlock about their destination. Instead he leans his head against Sherlock’s shoulder. Sherlock puts an arm around him, and they sit in companionable silence until the car stops.
Sherlock leaps out of the car and heads for the boot. He hands a large blanket to John and takes a picnic basket from Antoine.
“Merci beaucoup,” Sherlock says and gestures for John to walk into the park.
Square de Batignolles is a peaceful oasis. They find a secluded space in the shadows. John spreads out the blanket on the lawn and Sherlock opens the basket, which is filled to the brim with delicacies. Different cheeses, cured meat, baguettes, marmalade, croissants, fruit, a bottle of red wine, glasses and two pieces of cake.
They lie down when they’ve devoured the food, and John props himself up on an elbow, looking down at Sherlock.
“You’re eyes are so green today,” John says.
“Just mirroring the leaves above us, John,” Sherlock explains.
“Nope. They’ve been like that all day,” John retorts stubbornly.
“Well, I’ll have to take you to “Le Train Bleu” tonight just to prove you wrong then,” Sherlock teases.
He reaches for John’s hand and kisses the palm tenderly.
“Happy Anniversary, John.”
“Happy Anniversary, my love,” John says, lifts Sherlock’s hand to his mouth and mirrors Sherlock’s act.
On this date 24 years ago I got married, so it had to be a wedding anniversary for the boys as well.

I made an obscure joke about British electrical systems in cars that only people familiar with vintage Lotus, Jaguars, Triumphs, etc would probably get.
So, probably no one that follows me.
And I'm just giggling all alone to myself.
My dad had one customer with a Lotus and he almost told him to take it somewhere else.
Growing up around American mechanics obsessed with muscle cars it was important to roast foreign cars. A rite of passage, if you will.
To my dad's disappointment, I still had a Lamborghini Countach and a Ferrari Testarossa on my wall.
I did end up appreciating Corvettes and Camaros when I got older. Mainly because I was able to actually ride in them. The noise is like a hundred bears growling at you from every direction. Which is super neat in small doses. Though I don't know how my brother drives around like that all the time.
My dad also had a customer with a white De Tomaso Pantera. But I don't think he ever got to work on that.
We got to "visit" the car. But the owner rarely drove it so I remember being a little kid and just kinda staring at it—wondering why it was a big deal. My dad would just say, "It's really expensive so don't touch."
Our former next-door neighbor had a Super Stock drag racing car that he built himself. That was like 10,000 bears growling at you from every direction. It was basically as fast as the Tesla Plaid without the whole "street legal" thing going for it. I got to sit in it a bunch of times with the engine revving. But it could only be driven on the drag strip. Oh, and you had to get into the car through the window like the Duke boys.
And my favorite car experience was when I rode in a 1980s Porsche 911. A friend of my uncle owned it and gave all of us kids a ride. He drove me around on some very hilly and dark backroads. Looking back, it probably would have been safer during the daytime. I'm pretty sure the speed limit was 25 and we were going above 80. I was used to cars that only went fast in a straight line. So when he took a curve at a million miles an hour and I was pinned to the door, it felt more like a roller coaster than a car ride. That thing stuck to the road like it had duct tape for wheels.
What was I talking about?
And that's why Lucas Electric caused so many British cars to have sucky wiring.
Or something.
The End

are you familiar with the casefiles of jeweler richard? i ask because you see the narrator seigi eventually becomes the live-in personal secretary of the title character richard, and i guess this is kind of a spoiler for the third book but richard did a bit of con artistry at one point pre-story under the name edward baxter and at one point when seigi is still a part-time employee they drive away some local counterfeit jewelers by going undercover as it were as baxter and his bodyguard/translator/assistant yamada (they're not real people outside of seiricha role-playing them but their ship name is bakuyama btw) and yamada calls baxter 'sensei' and dresses a bit more bad-boy-like, and of course this in itself wouldn't make me think "kitagoro reference" but- but!- richard drives a dark green jaguar like kitaoka. the author surely must be aware of kamen rider ryuuki (her own characters tend to fall into the pattern of two fellas who are obviously the most important to each other but don't really use words like "boyfriend" or "husband"), so am i totally delusional for wondering if bakuyama are deliberately kt56 coded?? maybe dark green jaguars are just the stereotypical rich dude car in japan, i don't know. anyway, hi!
"are you totally delusional for thinking something is a kitagoro ref"? you came to the wrong place partner because reading the second half of this knocked me on my ass. like i'm already feeling unwell bc i'm suffering from some type of Flu but SENSEI... THE GREEN JAGUAR... i cannot handle this. kitagoro reference until proven otherwise.
also. calling them "kt56".. is cute. kita56. cute cute cute.
Sounds like an interesting series. i love mystery stuff...
although re: dark green Jaguar i almost feel like it makes extra sense for this Richard dude to be driving it since he's British and it's a British car ? and also ok since we're talking about kitaokas jag it seems like he's got an American market (or otherwise righthand driving) version since the driver's side is on the left. maybe he got it that way to look More Special and Foreign?
so in conclusion. deliberate kt56 reference? who can say really. i am very biased but it made me feel like kitaoka on the fainting couch momentarily so: thank you anon. i would love to talk to you off anon

The Remaining main American car companies is Ford and General Motors. Now you have Tesla, and is it Rivian. So of the forty two brands in the united states only are a few that are owned by an american car company. Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep is owned by Fiat a French company.
The main chinese company that produces cars in america is volvo. It is not Swedish anymore. Chinese bought it years ago. Then the indian auto manufacturer in the united states is tata motor and they own Land Rover and Jaguar.
The point is, there's only two remaining american car companies, really..... And they only have a few brands of the forty two brands that are sold in america for automobiles.... So that means the majority of everybody who works in the auto. Industry works for foreign company..... The majority of auto workers do not work for an american company very few of the auto workers work for an american company, overwhelming majority, overwhelming majority work for foreign company......
So, america, you would say is very diverse..... Who knows how long Ford & General Motors will hold out.... 🤔
General Motors sells more cars overseas than America & the percentage is getting larger...
So Ford is the last American car company that does the majority of its sales in America. So Ford still sells 80% of its cars in America, so investing in Ford.is investing in America... Meaning if you want a pure play and you're doing asset allocation. Then the only car company you can pick that has its majority of sales in the United States. That is an American company is Ford....
So the president and presidents before not investing in the white pore in america, have really done a number on the white population. All this white trash..... It's pretty fucking disgusting 🫣 😤 😒 😑 😐 🤧 🫣

See when you talk percentages, it doesn't work... Percentages are designed to ignore size. Percentages are designed, so you can measure things of different sizes against each other. But when you're talking actual numbers, then let's talk about actual numbers....
So poor whites in america make up one third of the total latin population in america, which is thirty three percent... 🙄 🤔 Poor whites in america make up over fifty percent of the black population in america 🇺🇸 😢 😕 😳 White, poor equal or are little more than the total Asian population in American... So we're talking about a sizable population that has had no economic investment into its community, no government programs and the federal, the state, the county or local targeting them to help lift them out of poverty...... There has been only programs that have discriminated against them from rising out of poverty.... So the government has created the system where people that are white can't get off the bottom.... So they've done what you would call reverse discrimination..... And so you throw in all the illegals coming in to the United States? And then you throw in making them citizens and then giving them all kinds of economic incentives over poor whites which get none... And I've been watching this growing up since the 70s. And going back into the 60s, the civil rights movements and everything else and it turned everything against poor whites....
So whereas the government gave all kinds of incentives and this is why we had the housing crash to minorities, and they were purchasing large quantities of real estate and governments constantly giving them incentives. Were poor whites had no incentives, and my family had to move into trailer parts... 😢 My auntie immerdl lived in arizona in a trailer park... My brother and his wife with his two kids lived in a trailer park.... For almost twenty years and the majority of my life and my younger brother's life, we haven't been able to purchase any property....

There was a disturbance at a
I called the university of chicago talking about graduate school... I asked them if they had any incentives for economically challenged poor whites... 😔 They said no, they offer no economic incentives to anyone who is poor white... Then I said, how about poor white and disabled? And they said no, we offer no economic incentives to poor whites who are disabled.... Then I went to my friend j. Ro... Who is korean who went to the university of chicago booth... 🤔 I said Jay. Did you get any economic assistance from The University of Chicago to go to graduate school? And he said yes, I got economic assistance to go to graduate school at the university of chicago.... Interesting how that worked out me. I couldn't get anything but him. He comes from a better off family and he does come from a more Economically, rich family and he gets incentives because he is a minority.... So it doesn't matter how poor you are. As a white person, you don't get any assistance... As I found out when I tried to apply 4 medicaid and welfare multiple times because my mom threatened to kick me out. I didn't want to, but she threatened to kick me out on the street if I didn't. So I applied twice and I got turned down twice... They also turn me down for social security disability. I didn't apply for it. They just did it for me at the mental health institution. I was first put in in Lake County. I didn't even know they applied for me. I got a leather saying they were contesting my application. And denying me eligibility for social security disability.... And then I watch my friend Pete. Talk about how the black family living across the street from him. Add multiple link cards, head nicer house. They were living in than his and had nicer car. And other things than he had... Mass of fraud by blacks on these welfare systems.... But if you're black or a minority, you're just automatically approved.... 🤷 🤔 😏 😉
Then somebody had the Sioux, the University of Michigan. Because they wouldn't give assistance to poor whites. They refused to at the University of Michigan same financial situation, but they took it and refused. Economic packages to go to the University of Michigan for poor whites and they gave that assistance to more minorities... This was a case with the pell grant system. Then I found out across the nation talking to people who work in the financial aid offices. Because I was part of a organization that had lots of financial aid officers. That were attending our conferences that they actively discriminate against poor white. And you say? How is that possible because the department of education financial aid officers permission to discriminate... So I tried to get my niece assistance at Bradley university and the black financial aid officer said too bad for them... And I said, and I wrote him and gave him the financials that it's up to your discretion, but they meet the exception role because of their unforeseen hardship that they should get assistance... He said it's not my fault. They bought that big house and had that big mortgage. And you know, have these other obligations... So let them sell it all two fucking bad 👎 😤 😒 🙄 That's what he said, but it's the same thing A university in naperville, I went to appeal for my nephew, eric for further assistance so he could stay in the university and they denied me... Yes, they had the discretion to give him even a Perkins. Favorable, but they didn't. That's a fixed interest rate at 5%. I think it was. 🤔 But they had the ability to give him Other assistance and they refused and eric had the drop out of school.... I did the same for my nephew. Jimmy for wynona university because of his legion on his brain... And again he was turned down.... Then I experience it myself as I went to school. I was turned down for things, and minorities were given things equal situation. I was discriminated against. They were given..... So I'm supposed to suffer for them. Fuck you!!!! They need to get off their f****** a** Get off the f****** subsidies and make it. On their fucking own.... That's one thing I appreciated about my ex. She didn't take any financial assistance. Her mother paid for everything and she paid for her sister and her brother got a scholarship and they took no government assistance in any way, shape or form... So we're talking about fair competition because right now it hasn't been end as you see, this percentage really hasn't changed of poor whites. You think it would have gone down, it hasn't gone down. It has been maintained constantly that means the government has failed. The white community, not lowering the percentage of poor whites.... 😢 😔 😞 😕 😐 😪 But they've been actively working at everybody else....

Kaiser Darrin - The CAR Henry J's WIFE WANTED
The Kaiser Darrin, also known as the Kaiser Darrin 161 or in short as the Darrin, was an American sports car designed by Howard "Dutch" Darrin and built by Kaiser Motors for the 1954 model year. Essentially a revamp of Kaiser's Henry J compact, the Kaiser Darrin was one of its designer's final achievements and was noted for being the second (behind the 1953 Corvette) American car equipped with a fiberglass body and doors that slid on tracks into the front fender wells. The car was named both for Henry J. Kaiser, head of Kaiser Motors, and Darrin. The Darrin was conceived as part of a movement in Detroit to compete head-to-head with European roadsters being imported to and sold in the United States in the post–World War II period. Among other products developed were the Ford Thunderbird in its initial two-seat form and Chevrolet Corvette. While the Darrin was designed attractively, it was also underpowered and, while a good performer overall, did not measure up to foreign vehicles such as the Nash-Healey or Triumph TR2. The Darrin's high price tag, lack of consumer confidence in Kaiser's viability and practical challenges with the car's design resulted in low sales, though sports cars at the time were generally not fast sellers. ✅ Subscribe to Our Channel for More Cars, Tips & Resources: https://www.youtube.com/c/TwoGuysandaRide/ ✅ Stay Connected 👉 Twitter: https://twitter.com/GuysRide 👉 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/twoguysandaride/ 👉 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@twoguysandaride ============================= ✅ SEE all of our HOW TO videos here: CarTechHowTo.com - http://bit.ly/2ZvDrbE ✅ Our Playlists: https://www.youtube.com/c/TwoGuysandaRide/playlists ✅ Other Videos You Might Be Interested In Watching: 🚘 1951 Mercedes-Benz 220 Cabriolet - https://youtu.be/b_2DiBbHtDg 🚘 POLESTAR 2 - You WILL Buy This Car! - https://youtu.be/SpONzft5iLM 🚘 DODGE Sierra Wagon with Rear-Facing Third-Row “Spectator” Seats - https://youtu.be/-4Zd83xdx2I 🚘 2022 Bennington Tritoon 23RCW - https://youtu.be/S08erqgB9dk ================================= Special Thanks to: ================================= ✅ About Two Guys and a Ride: Two Guys and a Ride’s channel is dedicated to all things automotive. Tata Motors Gives American Shareholders the Shaft
It isn’t often that a global car company chooses not to trade on an American stock exchange. But that is what India-based Tata Motors (NYSE: TTM) has decided to do effective January 23,2023
If you are not familiar with Tata, that’s because it does not market any of its automobiles under that name in the United States. However, you may be acquainted with its Jaguar and Land Rover brands which it sells all over the world.
Also, Tata is not nearly as valuable as the “big three” U.S. automakers. Tata has a market cap of around $19 billion, which makes it roughly one-third the size of Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) and General Motors (NYSE: GM).
In 2004, Tata issued an ADS (American Depositary Share) that trades on the New York Stock Exchange. At that time, the company wanted to expand its investor base outside of Asia.
That effort was largely successful. Over the next eleven years, TTM gained more than 500%. But after peaking above $50 in January 2015, the stock plummeted to below $5 in March 2020 in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Coincidentally, that is about the same time that Tata decided to prioritize electric vehicle (EV) production. That turned out to be a good move. Eighteen months later, TTM was above $33.
Since then, it has gradually backtracked to the mid-$20s. Rising interest rates are bad for new car sales, most of which are purchased using debt.
Nevertheless, Tata’s global unit sales increased 33% during the second quarter of this year (ended September 30) compared to last year. On a sequential basis, unit sales grew 6% versus the previous quarter.
In short, Tata does not want to get caught in a squeeze between the United States and China. It has a huge market in its own backyard and can’t afford to lose it to foreign competitors.
In that regard, the company’s decision to delist from the New York Stock Exchange makes sense. Tata has decided to go all-in on India and is pushing all of its chips into the middle of the table.
The question is, will investors in India respond favorably to Tata’s decision to eschew foreign investment? If they do not, then the stock may take a dive once the $19 billion in ADS capital has been either cashed out or converted to shares on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

How To Enhance Your Automotive Hobby Experience By Collecting Car Art
What with the explosive escalation of labor and parts costs to build a collector car or do a proper restoration of a car or truck, collecting automotive art and prints may be a substantial alternative to actually owning a great automotive icon. Artists from around the world are currently selling great works, and you can utilize them in collecting reasonable and provocative car art. You just have to be willing to make the effort to find them. Perhaps this article may prove helpful to you in that pursuit.
It matters little what type of car or truck you love to follow. There are artists who have depicted your favorite vehicle in one form or another, and you can find those artists using the resources suggested here in this article. You may favor restored vehicles, or maybe custom cars, hot rods, muscle cars, pickups, legal classics, vintage racers, drag racing vehicles, vintage antiques, or even foreign sports cars. Trust me…..it has been Glues and Adhesives rendered in oils, water colors, or ink art work by someone somewhere, and you can buy it now. You just have to be able to locate what you want.
Thanks to the wonderment of the internet, typing in just a few key words into your search engine can reveal page after page of resources to review. You don't want to look at just the first page that pops up. You may find that the first five or ten pages reveal hundreds of sources of art work. Take time to look at a lot of these sources. Behind non-descript titles might lay fabulous renderings, many of which have found their way into the leading automotive magazines in America and other countries.
It amazes me how much it costs to get prints of the top art work when that art is done in color by a "name" car artist. Original works can run into the hundreds of dollars or even the thousands of dollars. But there is one way to enjoy it all much more cheaply…….buy the print of the original art. I know of famous painters who sell the actual original for $5000-$40000, but the print may cost only $35-$150 each. And the print may look every bit as stunning when hung on the wall and viewed from ten feet out. Many artists provide 10-20 printed renderings, while others sell up to 40-50 different prints on their website.
The artist who resides overseas from America can give you an exotic take on certain foreign sports cars and legal classics, and I find that particularly attractive if one is to diversify the type of vehicle held in one's collection. Some of the greatest prints or originals of Ferraris, Mercedes Benz, Masserati, Lamborghini, Jaguar and others come from those who reside overseas. Their inspiration probably comes from national heritage or from photography taken at some of the greatest concours competitions held overseas. Of course, many mingle with wealthy car owners and use photography of the cars owned by their friends as inspiration.

A Guide to Understanding Insurance Rates By Car
What if you were paying higher rates for your insurance policy and you didn’t even know it?
All drivers want lower rates, but most drivers don’t know which factors affect how much they pay. These drivers may end up asking a question: do rates vary by car?
Yes, rates vary by car, so what you drive affects how much you have to pay. That’s why it might be a good idea to think about the cost of auto insurance before purchasing a specific vehicle. Now may also be the best time to see if another insurer can provide you with a better deal.
In order to get the cheapest, you need to know more about how insurers set prices based on what you drive.
Does Car Insurance Depend on the Type of Car?
How much you pay for your auto policy depends in part on what kind of car you drive. More expensive vehicles are typically more expensive to insure, and vehicles with certain safety features may be less expensive to insure.
At first, it might seem unfair that more expensive cars are more expensive to insure. But this is a major factor because if you get into a big accident and need a new car, the company will have to pay that much more to replace your vehicle.
The short story is that your average sports cars are less expensive to insure than, say, a Toyota Camry. Now, let’s take a closer look at how auto rates vary by what kind of car you are driving.
Cheapest Rates by Car
Some of the cheapest cars to insure by make include:
Chrysler
Chevrolet
Dodge
Ford
GMC
Honda
Kia
Ram
Toyota
Volkswagen
If you are mostly looking for a lower premium, keep in mind that American-made, non-luxury brands are typically cheaper to insure. Foreign cars and luxury cars, meanwhile, require you pay an added cost on your coverage. This is one of the reasons you should always think long and hard before you buy a new vehicle!
As of 2021, the least expensive model to insure was the Chrysler Voyager L, which had an annual yearly cost of $1,272 in premiums.
Most Expensive Rates by Car
Some of the most expensive cars to insure by make include
Audi
BMW
Lamborghini
Jaguar
Maserati
Mercedes
Tesla
These are the kinds of cars that always turn heads. But if you’re about to become a new driver of one of these cars, keep in mind that the quotes you get may be higher than you were expecting.
In some cases, an experienced agent may be able to tell you more about how much it will cost to insure a prospective new car. By having that conversation sooner rather than later, you may be able to save yourself an annoying headache and more than a few dollars!
Why Are These Cars So Expensive to Insure?
These makes of cars are typically more expensive because it costs more to repair them if you’re in an accident. Therefore, insurers charge more for your premiums to account for this. Regardless of which type of coverage you get (whether it’s just minimum liability coverage or a full-coverage policy), you will see a rate increase compared to the auto premiums you normally pay.
It’s also worth noting that you really can’t afford to only have liability when you have an expensive new car. That’s because if you are in an accident that is someone else’s fault, their liability may not be high enough to pay for the damages. And, of course, if you cause an accident, liability wouldn’t pay…you’d need collision coverage for that.
What car, though, would be most expensive for you to insure? As of 2021, the most expensive model to insure was the Maserati Quattroporte S GranSport, which had an annual yearly cost of $4,823 in premiums.
What Makes a Car More Expensive to Insure?
Technically, there are a variety of things that make cars more or less expensive to insure. For example, we previously touched on how the presence of certain safety features could reduce the costs of coverage.
Mostly, though, what affects the cost of your auto policy revolves around two factors: where the car was made and how much the car costs. By understanding more about both of these factors and how they work, you may be able to save money and better navigate the confusing world of car insurance.
Where the Car Was Made
Why do foreign vehicles cost more to insure? Simply put, they require foreign parts. This means if you get into an accident and file a claim, it will be more expensive for the carrier to repair your vehicle. Therefore, the carrier passes the added cost around in the form of higher car rates. This is something that drivers of foreign cars discover almost right away because even basic repairs and maintenance of their cars require importing parts from some very exotic places.
How Much the Car Costs
Even if you drive a domestic car, you may pay higher insurance premiums if the car is expensive for the same reasons we outlined above. Whereas a cheaper car is cheaper to repair or replace, more expensive cars cost more. This naturally leads to higher costs for the driver. In some cases, you may need more specialized insurance, such as getting classic car insurance for your vintage vehicle. Therefore, while it shouldn’t be your only consideration, it may be worth considering buying a cheaper car if you would like your policy to be cheaper as well.
How Can I Lower My Rates?
If you want to get the best price, you may want to drive a less expensive car. But even if you drive a car that’s a bit more expensive, there are a few ways you may be able to lower your premium. And some of these techniques may have a significant impact on your efforts to lower your rates.
Bundle Your Policies
Do you get multiple types of coverage from the same carrier? For example, if you get car insurance from the same carrier that provides your renters or homeowners insurance, you can bundle your coverage and save each month.
Be sure to contact your existing carrier to discover what kinds of policies they have to sell. If they don’t have much variety, this may be the best time for you to switch to a new carrier.
Boost Your Credit Score
If you have poor credit, it can affect how much you pay. If you can get good credit, though, it lowers how much you have to pay. Consider getting a free service to monitor and improve your credit so you can get a lower credit-based score.
With these services, pay particular note to anything in your credit record that is inaccurate. It can take some time and effort, but successfully disputing the things dragging your score down is one of the quickest ways you can restore your credit.
Improve Your Driving Record
As a general rule, customers who have a bumpy driving history pay more. If you can avoid things like collisions and traffic tickets, though, you can lower your coverage premiums. Once you get into fewer accidents, you may even be able to qualify for a safe driving discount!
And even without the discount, having a safe driving record is a great way to reduce the baseline cost of your premium. That will continue to come in handy, even if you switch to a new company.
Take a Defensive Driving Course
One of the best ways to get a lower premium is to take a defensive driving course. Even if you are planning to comparison shop, taking the course will help you get better quotes.
And the cost of these courses is relatively low, especially considering how much money they can help you save!
Install Anti-Theft Devices
One of the reasons you pay more in urban areas is that your car is likelier to get stolen. But no matter where you live, you can install anti-theft devices in your car to get a better premium.
These devices are a real “win/win” because every driver wants to protect their vehicle from theft and vandalism. Now, you can get a discount on your policy, as well as get peace of mind from making your car safer.
Change Your Coverage
There are different types of insurance out there, and you can save by changing your policy. For example, lowering your limits can lower your premium. Switching to a higher deductible can also make a big difference. Finally, you will be able to get more competitive quotes if you change how many types of coverage you have (such as dropping comprehensive coverage).
Keep in mind that we always recommend you have more than liability on your vehicle. And it’s worth consulting with your current carrier before you make any major changes to your existing coverage.
What Is a Fair Price for Car Insurance?
The average cost for Americans in 2022 is $1,674 per year for full coverage and $565 for minimum. So if you’re paying around that amount, you can assume you have a fair price. However, many different factors can affect how much you pay, including the type of vehicle that you drive. If you drive a more expensive and exotic car than the average person, you are always going to end up paying more on average for the cost of your coverage.
Where You Live Affects How Much You Pay
The average cost may vary greatly from place to place. You may pay more in your current state than certain friends or family pay for in their states. And you may even pay more (or less) than people you know in the same state. That is because carriers look at the specific zip code before giving you specific quotes on different coverage limits.
Ultimately, this affects carriers calculating insurance rates because some areas are safer than others. Major cities tend to be riskier places to drive than rural areas, as more cars are on the road and lots of traffic jams. That’s why you might pay a lot more if you live in New York City compared to somewhere like Fargo.
Should Car Insurance Decrease Every Year?
Theoretically, if you are a safe driver who doesn’t get into accidents and sticks with the same company, your rates should decrease every year.
That said, there are ways for your rates to increase. You might:
Get into an at-fault accident
Upgrade to a newer, more expensive car
Move to a bigger or more dangerous city
How to Find the Best Rates by Car
Finding the best rates by car type will require you to shop around a bit. To get lower car insurance, you’ll want to compare quotes from at least three different companies.
You’ll also want to see if you qualify for any discounts. As we mentioned above, cars that have safety and security features generally qualify for a premium reduction. Many insurers also offer military, veteran, student, and good driver discounts.

The 1954 “Motor Trend” Victress S1A has a great individual history, but also quintessentially represents the history of the American Post-War Sports car. This Victress has direct touch points with, @barriskustom, Wally Parks, Bob D’Olivio, Robert “Pete” Peterson and indirectly with Wunibald Kamm and others notable designers. The car represents much of the Los Angeles, California scene in the early post war years. In early 1954, Fred Bodley, the Technical Editor of Motor Trend, acquired a Victress body from the newly formed Victress Manufacturing Company, which was a partnership between Doc Boyce-Smith and Merrill Powell. In 1952, Boyce-Smith had asked Art Center graduate and friend, Hugh Jorgensen, to design a car body to “out Jag the Jaguar XK 120”. Jorgenson was inspired by the 1939 BMW 328 Mille Miglia “Bugelfalte”. The Victress used a slightly less pronounced, “trouser crease” (bugelfalte in German) on top of the fenders, but the lines of the side-profile and elongated tail were quite similar to the BMW. In 1953, a Victress bodied car claimed the title of the Worlds Fastest Sports car when it ran 202 mph at the Bonneville trials. This was an excellent attribution to the value of the long tail design by Wunibald Kamm. Starting in the late 1940s, Fred Bodley co-owned a high-end repair shop for Rolls Royce, Bentley and other foreign cars in Los Angeles, California. In the early 1950s, he started working at Trend Inc., the umbrella company owned by Pete Peterson who owned Motor Trend, Hot Rod and other automobile magazines, and retained his shop too. Bodley used a chassis from a mid-1940’s Ford, which he shortened and modified to fit the 100 inch wheelbase of the Victress S1A body. The front and rear firewalls cross-braced the chassis creating a relatively ridged frame, suitable for a sports car. Power was a Ford flathead engine, three-speed transmission, with a torque tube to a ford differential. The car had drum brakes all round, and Ford suspension and steering. Fred Bodley’s Victress S1A Roadster was just one of two cars ever to be shown on the floor of the Trend Inc., Corporate office.
