okay let me paint a picture for you

imagine a Nemesis toon who also gets on SMEN and the two revenge plots get so twisted up together in her head that she can't think straight

she kills Cups, then gets sense beaten into her skull by St Beau, and with a clearer head than she's had in months looks at everything she's done and concludes that you can survive a tragedy by chance but the only way to survive after surviving that tragedy is to learn how to move on from grief

and with that epiphany fresh in her mind she looks at Iron, and comes to Certain Conclusions about its relationship with C_____s and the nature of its unhopeful pragmatism, and is like

"I could fix her"

iron is bar none my favorite Mr

like yeah I've got some theories about what "crimes of knife and candle" originally was, to be something banned in the High Wilderness after being codified enough to have a name like that. you know the old newgate "flint or dagger" game, which puts explicit emphasis on the tension - in a hungry dark - between lighting a candle to see by (elusive!) vs striking in shadow (savage!)? you ever hear of the dark forest hypothesis? you ever encounter the stray Primaeval Hint about what the Wilderness was like before the Judgments? you suppose they might not have approved of people memorializing the old order, even as "just a game"?

if this is iron's crime, then I suspect there's no coincidence that, compared to its colleagues, it's the one who recognizes the threat that the dawn machine represents. it remembers, after all - has memorialized in ritual - the dangers of a new light coming to a dark place.

but I've also got some thoughts about how nobody could've run a "game of knife & candle" in the first or second city without another certain Mister's involvement. and about how the game was still called that in the fifth city, with that one absent, like "Scrooge and Marley" still hanging up on a shingle seven years after Marley's death. and about how the release of New Seeking and hiatus of K&C happened at the same time. and about how Iron warns against getting ensnared in a story someone else is writing. especially love stories. especially promises of "happily ever after".

in short, iron is a skeptic and a realist - by hard-earned lesson and scars upon its person. but it's also got a long memory, and a respect for that which once was. old forms, old ways, old friends (or more than friends).

Where are the Mr Iron fans at, don't you wanna know what's going on in that bat's head, don't you wanna know what "crimes of knife and of candle" looks like, don't you wanna know how fluffy it might be under the chain mail, don't you wanna know the exhilaration and intimacy of dueling as foreplay, who said that last one
