Radius Project: day 2 of week 3, 03/10/2023
I started by doing some crochet for myself, having no inspiration in the morning. After a while, I thought I could maybe make some crochet flowers!
When I started to do that, I talked to our tutor Giordana Giache, and she showed me some things like Irish crochet-lace, and how I could make flowers by melting plastic with wool in between.
I wanted to do something with that crochet-lace, but then I saw this sort of net fabric which looked really cool and could be used instead of the crochet and I made a dress with it after, and stitched the flowers to it.
I really enjoyed doing this, it was fun to do something simple like this but make really something.

Remember this???? I finished it!! I finished my corset cover yoke!!!! I'm so very proud of it even though it took FOREVER
I've learned I'm too ambitious for my own good but as long as I can keep finishing these projects I'm not going to do anything about it :")
Anyways, onto the actual sewing!

The white patches I've made so far. Pretty much decided on joining them together Irish lace style and turning them into some sort of wearable. Need to make some more though, and maybe some smaller filler ones too.

So what is fiber art?
Anything you can make with fiber! I like crochet as a medium the most but there's weaving and knitting and loom work and you can even drop spinn your own fibers into yarn using something like a dowel or a spinning top, and my Favorite thing to make by far is creating these motif abominations of fractal magic:
The difference between a motif like this and another plain white piece that traditionally goes into an Irish lacework piece (which is usually something like many doilies that somehow make a form fitting dress) is that most of the time, this practice is hell. That hook is 2.75mm and the final piece is around 8" in diameter, no one wants to work on that any longer than they have to, so usually in the older styles you'll see a piece like this in either a white, off white, or a solid color. Very rarely, if at all, do you see a lacework piece that is entirely made of two different and uninterrupted strings of fiber color blocking in this way, where one strand spends a lot of time underneath the other. You do see it often for corner to corner blankets, traditional color blocking, or other solid-stitched works with little chance to perceive the "under" color, but the shading and value illusion that happens here in the fan shape is 100% intentional. To me, this practice feels partially between crochet and weaving, lying somewhere in a sea of plaid in a fractal round set to an Irish lace pattern.
In conclusion, I made dis, but my ancestors would never.

Bought some yarn for another project but then didn't end up needing it so now its just been staring at me for two weeks until I finally went out today and bought a crochet hook so I could try to remember how to crochet after like a decade 😅 end goal is Irish lace

This thing is hard to photograph, but here she is! My corset cover, made from patterns from the 1910s, but made to work with my 1890s wardrobe.
I jumped head first into lacemaking one evening in February(!) and ended up in this project that took Four (4) months, with healthy breaks in between of course. I'm happy with the outcome and very pleased to be learning new skills, this time with Irish crochet.
Now I have to make a corset to cover!

I want to make some Irish lace so badly but I don't know what I'd make with it because I want to make something wearable but it also has to be something I'd wear and I can't decide what I want to make and I want it to be a smallish project but the need to just Make Something is building like a pressure cooker and if I don't figure out what I'm going to make/how I'm going to make it soon I will explode

Gonna try irish crochet because working with thread is unreasonably fun! Just have to figure out the netting
I'll probably transfer these to some fabric since the pins are hard to work around tbh
