The western blue flag, Iris missouriensis, is absolutely gorgeous this time of year! I found these ones near Umtanum Creek Falls near Ellensburg, WA. Like a lot of plants in the Iridaceae family, these irises are bitter and somewhat poisonous, so cattle ranchers tend to view them as a weed - and they used to be used by the Navajo as an emetic! If they make humans throw up, it’s no wonder cattle don’t like them.

I had a magical time today, just north of the Mogollon Rim- an area in my top 3 favorite parts of Arizona. The Rim is the 200 mile long southern end of the Colorado Plateau, a major geographic feature of the Southwestern US. It rises 3000-4000 ft (915-1200 m) above the land below, creating a unique floristic and faunal boundary and thus an area of high diversity. Along a lush, ephemeral creek-bed, hundreds of pollinating insects flew among the flowers. I’m so grateful this place exists and that I get paid to spend time there! The butterfly and first bee were on Iris missouriensis, Rocky Mountain iri, Iridaceae. The other bees were on Frasera speciosa, elkweed or deers ears, Gentianaceae. Two of my favorite plants! #bug #insect #pollinators #butterfly #bee #bumblebee #arizona #northernarizona #nature #naturephotography #naturemakespeoplehappy #nativeplants #botany #plants #nature #naturephotography #botanylove #plantstagram #plantsarefriends #naturelovers (at Stoneman Lake, Arizona)

These are either Hartweg’s Iris (iris hartwegii) or Western Blue Flag (iris missouriensis). The internet suggests I shouldn’t worry too much about which one, as they’re very similar, but I lean towards Hartweg’s.
